For Knapp, no excuses

Terence Moore

Flowery Branch - Says here that Greg Knapp is outta here as Falcons offensive coordinator if Michael Vick continues to look clumsy when using his arm instead of his legs. To which Falcons coach Jim Mora responded on Monday after the conclusion of his team’s first minicamp by pointing upward to stress that nothing is clearer in Mora’s mind than the fact that Knapp knows exactly what he’s doing.

“Like the sky’s blue. Not one of us can say that the sky’s not blue,” said Mora, still pointing after giving other “facts” that he says that nobody who knows the difference between a nimbostratus cloud and blitzing linebacker “can argue.”

This was the calmer Mora speaking, by the way. The slightly irritated one surfaced a few minutes earlier during his passionate defense of Knapp, who came with Mora to the Falcons from the San Francisco 49ers before the 2004 season. With voice rising, Mora said, “The guy is one of the finest offensive coordinators in the league. The fact is - there’s an undisputable fact that no one can dispute - that we went from 29th to 12th (out of 32 teams in total offense). We went from 29th or 30th on third downs to second. We led the league in rushing for two consecutive years.”

Mora paused to unclench his teeth, before adding, “I’m flabbergasted when people question Greg Knapp. Go look at the numbers, and you tell me a team that has done that and has had that much (dramatic) improvement, then maybe you can argue with me. Until then, nobody has a basis for their argument.”

Mora paused again, before easing into a smile and saying, “Well, unless they just want to throw (junk) up in the air and see what sticks.”

This sticks: What Mora is neglecting to mention is that in 2003, when the Falcons offense was ranked 29th, Vick played in just five games. He missed most of the season with a broken right fibula. It’s a wonder how much an offense can improve when Doug Johnson is not your quarterback.

This also sticks: 73.1. That was Vick’s passer rating last season, which ranked 25th out of the league’s 34 qualifying quarterbacks. Not only that, his passer rating has spiraled toward oblivion each season since he reached a career high of 81.6 during his last full season under Dan Reeves in 2002 and the Green Bay miracle.

This sticks, too: The various excuses for Vick’s inability to throw himself to the next level have dwindled to zero.

For starters, since Mike Johnson was the only coach dismissed by Falcons officials during the offseason, they essentially blamed all of Vick’s struggles on the quarterbacks coach. Johnson’s replacement, Bill Musgrave, already has been anointed as savior of the universe around here, or at least of No. 7. In fact, with the veteran Musgrave around, Knapp said he’ll have more time to focus on the big picture of running the offense instead of functioning as he did with Johnson as offensive coordinator and co-quarterbacks coach.

Said Knapp, who, like Mora, feels as if the guilotine isn’t swinging above the head of the offensive coordinator, “Like any business, the more people around you that understand what’s going on, it helps to make that business stronger. I feel like (Musgrave) will make us stronger as a unit, because I’m not feeling as obligated to be in there.”

So any chance of Falcons officials playing the blame game again with the quarterbacks coach is definitely punted away. In addition, nobody can say that Vick is struggling out of discomfort with the new offense anymore. Well, they could, but among others involved with their versions of the West Coast offense, Steve Young already had won the NFL’s most valuable player award by his third full year, Donovan McNabb was making his second trip to the NFC championship game, and Brett Favre had become Brett Favre.

One more thing: Vick spent much of last season with various aches and pains, but mostly there was his knee sprain that required a brace. He said it was the reason he chose to spend an usually high amount of time (for him) in the pocket last season. He said he is completely healthy now, which means he is his old self.

Which also means the pressure just increased even more on Knapp to make Vick go back to the future of his last season with Reeves, if nothing else.

Knapp must have some compromising photo’s on Mora (you know they were in San Fransico for a long time). Anyways, my problem with Knapp and this offense is that it is not tailored to Vick’s strenghts. Vick needs to be in a system like the one run in Denver. everything is predicated in Denver on A fast pace, attacking the Defense and most importantly VERTICAL PASSING (THE BOMB). If Vick looks uncomfortable this year, they wont just fire Knapp. Mora will be a gone wit him!!

I dont usually agree with you Mr. Moore. But this is right on. Facts are facts and the jury is definitely out on this coaching staff.

Next season, playoffs or Mora and Company are GONE!!!

While I don’t like Knapp’s play calling and wish we could get rid of him, I DO like coach Mora…I wish he hadn’t tied himself to that anchor so tightly. It looks like if one goes, so must the other follow. It’s a shame, because the Falcons NEED a coach with fire and enthusiasm. It’s nice to have someone running the show who actually goes for it on fourth and 1, or actually looks like he cares if the team wins or looses. I hope if Knapp doesn’t get a grip and gets fired, Mora doesn’t stick too closely with his buddy (like he did with Jason Webster). I think you may be right, Mr. President; Knapp probably has some 8X10 glossies of Mora in a hotel room with a bunch of gay midgets.

Although I don’t quite see the dreaded impetus of Vick not wonderfully improving coming down on Knapp yet, it remains to be seen later in the season how Vick fares and what the Falcons W/L record is. And yeah I like Mora too, and I wish other people would not use my AFMB screen name to post idiotic comments like the one on here.

here we go again, it is someone else’s fault; it is pure heresy to place any blame on mike vick. knapp did not throw one pass, run one play or made any split second decisions to scramble.

maybe, the defenses since dan reeves have determine to make vick a one dimensionial qb and increase their own team speed.

we have a qb who has stated he is not comfortable with the offense, reading defenses or staying very long in the pocket. he is not very accurate in his passing.

it is all of knapp’s fault for vick’s inablility to perform.it has nothing to do with vick’s execution just blame it all on the coach.

knapp might as well pack his bags because the judgement has already been rendered and you coach knapp have been found guilty as charged by mr. moore and the falcon nation.

Worst sports “fans” in the country! Vick’s “inability to perform” ??? Yeah, that’s what Shanahan meant when he told Vick after the Bronco game two years ago..”Man, you’re something else”

That’s what Madden meant when he said that Vick is already a star. He’s the only player on Atlanta that the other team knows it has to stop.

One idiot even wrote last week that the defense “saved” Atlanta last year. I hope he leaves and goes to New York so that all of the hype follows him and Atlanta can go back to its “same old Falcons” That’d make you happy wouldn’t it losers?

Three years starting, two playoff appearences and one NFC championship game. Yeah, he sucks.

Everyone calling for Knapp’s head answer some questions for me:

  1. Who do you get to replace him?
  2. Do you start fresh with a new offensive system and abandon the WCO? If so, where do you get the money to replace the personnel you have under contract to suit the new offense?
  3. If you design an offensive system to suit Michael Vick, what do you do when he inevitably gets hurt?

Some folks just don’t get it. Every team has an offensive system. Effective teams have offensive systems that suit the talents of the majority of players in that system. Not just one.

I’m sick and tired or nay-sayers that don’t think this offensive system will work for Michael Vick. I’m equally sick of folk that think that Vick can’t learn and thrive in the WCO.

The WCO is predicated on timing. You progress through your reads and either throw the ball or run within four seconds. That’s what made Montana and Young so dangerous. Defenses cannot get to QB to get a sack because it’s read, read, read, pass or run.

The offense has the pieces falling into place like great 49er teams of old: Pro Bowl level players at RB, FB, TE and soon WR. When Vick gets his Jerry Rice and I’m hoping that Roddy White is the next Rice, all the pieces will come together and Vick will get it, and when it does and he does, look out! This team will be unstoppable.

Fact, it was George Seifort that pioneered the WCO. He tried that broken piece of crap with the Carolina Panthers and lost every game. That was before John Fox came along and took them to the Superbowl.

Let’s stop this nonsense that the WCO is the magnificient answer to all our problems. It’s is no longer innovative; but is as commonplace as a commodity.

Given us a coach with his own style, not a follower of a has been.

Of course he is gonna defend take-a-Knapp, its his best friend. But lets look at the facts…Vick has regressed as an offensive force and has said he doesnt like the system. Vick has the strongest arm in the Nfl but the wco doesnt like to throw it deep. Not throwing it deep also keeps the safties near the line of scrimmage, making it easier to stuff Vick…remember how he used to break open those 40-yard runs? He hasnt had one in years. Our running game is #1 solely because of Vick adding an extra 500-800 yards a year, no system has that. Fact is, we are a mediocre running team. Good defenses shut down our run…look at the stats against the panthers last year or the bears, or both playoff losses to the eagles. Take away the blocking scheme that we stole from Denver and we wouldnt be close to #1. Our offense is incredibly predictable, thats why its so easy to shut it down. You can tell what formations we’re running, when Vick is going to bootleg left, when we’re going to try to throw to Crumpler.

Our passing offense was better under Reeves, period. We will never win a super bowl under take-a-knapp…too predictable, doesnt play to strengths of our players, and poor coaching by take-a-Knapp AND Mora. When your head coach has to use a CELL PHONE to figure out whats going on, and has his team QUIT on him on the last game of the season against a division rival…thats not acceptable.

Good point, the coaching staff must have talent that the 31 other staffs in the NFL doesn’t have. I just do not see Knapp and Mora being along those lines. We should’ve hired Lovie Smith when we had the chance. Then, we wouldn’t be giving up 30 points per game. Vick has done amazing things for the Falcons. But now the team is being inundated with mediocrity from leadership that can’t perform a basic SWOT analysis. SWOT = Strenghts, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats. We have a strength at our QB position that no other team has. This strength has kept Dan Reeves around until that strength was put out for the season. What is that strenght? A man that will “single-handedly” make a play when a play needs to be made. 4th down and goal; who would you rather have at QB.

Tim - well said. And may I add I find Mr Moore’s rose-colored rearview mirror look at the Reeves era pretty hard to swallow. T-Bone: Knapp was offered other jobs. He was interviewed by at least one team for a head coaching position from what I recall (Raiders I think?). I guarantee you if the Falcons fired him tomorrow he would be signed by another team within days. Much like the Falcons snapped up Donatell when the Packers were stupid enough to blame him for their playoff loss. In fact, the Packers are a classic example of a team shooting itself in the foot by firing a good coach. Check out how their defense went the year after Donatell left.

The best way to energize, invigorate and empower the offense would be to put a real quarterback on the field. The Foulcons have such an individual in Matt Schaub. He’s much better than old nappy head in that he understands, that in order, to be successful the quarterback must be determined to execute the plays as called. He also is much more accurate with his passes and he’s, intellectually, light years ahead of the braided one. Vick, instead of a helmet, should be required to wear a dunce cap when on the field. If the Foulcons want to win they must put Schaub on the field. Keep the loser Vick out there and the record will be 3-13! How about that, Foulcons fans?

people really need to look at the Falcons schedule! if we go 9-7 this season will be a success. one of the more obvious outcomes of last season was the formula to stop Vick was on full display by Carolina, and Chicago. unless there are some dramatic advances in his passing it will not matter who the coach is.

If I’m not mistaken, Lovie Smith is the guy who decided to single-cover the one offensive weapon Carolina had last year: Steve Smith. Certainly sounds like a Falcon head coach, doesn’t it?

The WCO was pioneered by Bill Walsh back in the 70’s, which makes it much older than George Seifert. However, it’s not just the age of the system (Seattle got to the super bowl with it last year); it’s a combination of tailoring the system to your team’s individual talents (imagine Joe Montana in the run-and-shoot with June Jones calling the plays…yikes!) and (gasp!) adjusting to the f*ing opposing defence’s play calling throughout the course of the game as needed. Knapp comes in with a single game plan, the better defences adjust to it by halftime, and he never readjusts. If the defence knows what’s coming, you might as well put on leather helmets and line up in the wing-T. That said, the Falcons will be better this year (better D, healthier Vick, young wideouts more seasoned), but the schedule is brutal and Knapp is boring. I hope the team outplays the OC.

I believe Arthur’s in charge and has let Mora know that this year is the year to prove the coaching staff’s worth - and that MUST include more variety in the offense and play-calling and some new wrinkles used regularly (shotgun, Texas-style Run-Pass option plays, more rollout deep passes, etc.) to play to Mike’s strengths.

I read all these haters who say Vick can’t succeed, but I am betting that having good young receivers that he has worked with all offseason and in camp will make a huge difference, as will better pass-blocking on the Oline. Rememeber that last year the season and camp work was with Price and Dez as 1 and 2, with Roddy and Jenkins at 1 and 2 and working on timing this offseason the difference will be huge.

I am an optimist who appreciates what Vick has done for this franchise, you Vick haters can go pound sand as you will be proven wrong this year.

I have a question for the pathetic jock-sniffers who worship at Vick’s throne:

With a trip to the playoffs on the line, what was your savior’s record in the final three games of the 2005 season?

Bonus question: how many touchdowns did the offense score under your savior’s leadership in those three games?

This whole topic is off point! The Falcons problem last year was DEFENSE. Yes, the offense was poor against Chicago and Carolina and yes the passing game needs to improve, but the offense was good enough to win 10 to 12 wins and make noise in the playoffs.

Why does the organization have a love affair with 270 pd. defensive lineman? Does it make sense to stick with the smallish, quick-twitch one-gap DT philosophy? When are we ever going to draft a safety?

Knapp tried to fit Vick into an offense designed for Joe Montana’s talents not Vick’s. I have faith, however, that they will make major leaps this year. After all Montana had Jerry Rice to throw to. Who has Vick had to throw too? One good TE does not win Super Bowls. If White and Jenkins live up to their draft status then Vick will make HUGE strides this year. A QB is only as good as the WR’s catching the ball !

Hey DISPUTED_lies.

I have been a Falcon fan for their whole existence. Except for one Jamal-lead SB, they have never had what it takes to win. Vick has changed that, carrying an under-talented team on his shoulders for much of the last few years.

Vick is not the reason the Falcons did not make the playoffs last year - go support some other team and shut up with your insults and trashy mouth.

Now that the defense has been restocked and Vick has receivers, and assuming he gets any pass-blocking at all, he will lead this team back to the playoffs and you can take your own rancid jock and stuff it in your own spew-hole mouth.

Defense wins Championships and Atlanta took some key steps this offseason towards shoring theirs up. Once the defense starts delivering, less pressure will fall on Knapp/Vick & co. to score a ton of points. Ball control offense will be the key.

Having said that, Knapp is as predicatble as sunrise and sunset. I can call his plays two downs before they happen. If I can figure that out, imagine what a layup it is for the opposing defensive coordinators. Knapp is mediocre at best but could be bailed out by a stellar defense.

Simply put….Vick is vital to our success(duh), but so is Dunn & DUCKETT! Our #1 running game was bloated because of Vick. Knapp needs to figure out a way to get both Duckett and Dunn on the field at the same time. Their styles are totally different and complement each other. Your telling me, Duckett wont put his helmet on somebody as a fullback(every once and awhile) to free up dunn. Or dunn won’t take a fake pitch out, with Duckett running up the gut with a pulling tackle or guard leading the way? Both can’t be defeneded by one linebacker. Dunn too quick, Duckett too strong. Get them involved!! Your telling me that Jenk, and Finn on the left and White wide right, Alge lined up right and Dunn and Duckett in an “I” wont make people go, Gee? Who’s getting the ball? White is a poor man’s TO this season. Jenk is a young Keyshawn, and Finn is your good ole, position receiver who will burn a linebacker or safety all day. You still got Alge, and MR……..VICK??!! You got to be kiding me. i know most of you are reading this and laughing at the fact about me liking Duckett….But the defeneidng super bowls champs didn’t have an interest in him for nothing. By the way….They have the best scouting team in the league…hands down. Knapp screwed duckett everytime he was in the ball game. Duckett got the ball up the middle 8 of 9 times, and it fooled no one. How many gang tackles can one man get, and you say it’s his fault. Some the “O” line, but most for the play calling. We fooled no one. When people thought we would roll out left….we rolled out left….up the middle? up the middle. Long bomb….you guessed long bomb. Stick to the basics, and get creative form their…..just like the Super bowl champs………i mean damn, I want to win one to you know! Damn, John Elway! ha ha ha

I would point out to you that Steve Young spent a lot of time on the bench behind Joe Montana, learning the offense. So to say he was the NFL MVP in his third season as starter is a bit misleading when compared to Vick’s third season in the WC offense. Young also played in a pass happy offense in college at BYU, while Vick played for a run-oriented VT offense, and a run-oriented offense under Dan Reeves. I’m not saying all of Vick’s troubles are because he’s new to an offense. He has made poor decisions and used poor technique in his throwing. But he is only coming into his third season of exposure to this offense, while the others you mentioned had exposure to the offense, or some other pass oriented attack, prior to becoming NFL starters. Even Young says year 5 is the year of full grasp. Given the every other year effect of Vick’s young career, I’d put money on the Falcons getting deep into the playoffs this season.

Once the pieces are in place then everything else is a process. Barring any significant injures I think this team is on the brink of something great and very entertaining. I still believe our offense last year was not great but with another year of experience our young wr will be playmakers and not just receivers trying to make plays. If we get an equal amount of playmakers on the defense side I truly believe this is a playoff team. We scored enough points to have had a much better record last year but with little to no help from the defense.

The Foulcons will not win a single game against opponents in their division. They aren’t good enough because of their sorry quarterback. The Foulcons will lose the first seven games of the season. At that point, look for Schaub to take over. Schaub should be the quarterback right now after the horrible numbers Vick put up last season. I find it insulting that Vick is now claiming his widdle knee hurt and prevented him from being effective. More lies from nappy head. Of course, when you’re the twenty-eighth best quarterback in the league, you have to come up with some sort of excuse to explain your lousy play. Some imbeciles claim the Foulcons can not win without Braid Boy but last season they wound up eight and eight. That’s not winning! No playoffs! There won’t be any next season either! As long as Vick stinks up the field, the Foulcons won’t be going to anything but the Prayoffs. The record for the Foulcons, in 2006, will be 3-13. Tito,

I’m a little dissapointed that you just keep posting the same material. I thought you would be a little more creative than that. I’m just waiting for win#4 so that even you have to admit that you’ve exposed yourself. Everyone runs out of bullsh*t at some point though right? So just keep posting the same thing? hmmmmm. Let me guess what’s next. You’ll do your own little version of my name, talk about how the”falcouns” suck with the “braided one” and exclaim a “3-13 season”. You used to be annoying. Now you’re just boring.

BTW. Don’t expect the Panthers to be stopping the run too much with that linebacking corp they have right now. Expect record days from the #1 rushing team in the NFL twice a year.

Lose the first 7 games? That guy has got to be from Philadelphia. Vick proven? Sorry buddy, I am a big time Schaub fan but am patiently waiting for Vick to live up to that contract. I can only hope that when Schaub is living up to your predictions it won’t be for Green Bay. We can’t blame Knapp for anything. You want a head on a platter how bout Ed Donatell. C’mon, our offense finished 12th in the entire league. That sure beats the heck out of our NFC South rivals to the south (23rd)and east (22nd), who by the way kicked our butts all over the field last year. Our D was decimated with injuries so if you want to blame McKay for no back up talent go for it. (Personal note to Babineaux - Rookies aren’t expected to be All-Pro in year 1)This team is maturing, hopefully Mora will learn to check that ego at the door and mature with it. Jim, if you can’t admit you lost that Green Bay game last year you have a lot to learn. The ‘06 schedule is tough, absolutely. But for the most part our division plays all common opponents with a few exceptions. Last years combined Won-Loss record of ‘06 opponents is: Falcons 105-103, Carolina 107-101, Tampa 116-92. The Saints will win more than 3 games this year but will not challenge for the division championship. We will put a better team on the field in ‘06, what does all this mean? Are ya ready for some football………!!!

So does VICK ever get held responsible for his poor play. It’s unbelievable that people are still calling Vick a young, inexperienced quarterback. He’s going into his 6th year in the league. Going into his 6th year, Tom Brady had won 3 Super Bowls. Face it, we’ve already seen the best of Vick. He’s a $50 million dollar flash in the pan.

THE CORRECT HEADING SHOULD BE “VICK- NO MORE EXCUSES”

What the %#*^ was Vick doing throwing our season away w/a bad knee when he could have rested and let our more than capable backup take the reins until he could be worked back in. I love Vick’s abilities but a running QB with a bad wheel couldn’t win with GOD as coach! If we are going to string Knapp up let’s do it for not knowing and/or doing anything about it! I now tip my forty sideways to last season look forward to DOMINATION for the Falcons this season!!!!!!

Tom Brady didn’t break his leg or play for the Falcons. Tom Brady hasn’t played with numerous different coaches. Tom Brady missed the playoffs a year after he won the Super Bowl. Are you trying to make the point that unless you have 3 super bowl rings by year 6 that you have topped out and you are a flash in the pan? You’ve just named every single other QB in the NFL including the great Peyton Manning who is in his 8th year without even a conference championship game in his pocket. Flash in the pan right?

Terence, Thanks for outing the stats that Mora has been using for a while.
JimmyB PS Could you share this PhD Journalist Technique with the high school editors down the hall who believe there is a Social Security trust fund and Iraq didn’t kill all of those Kurds with WMD?

Dan, you are something the English use as slang for a cigarette. Here’s another clue, it rhymes with maggot, which you also are, and begins with the letter F. The Panthers beat the Foulcons, twice, last season. it was merciless on both occasions. They’re going to do it twice more in the coming season. The Bucs beat them twice last year and get ready for a repeat performance in 2006. Now here’s the ultimate kick in your upper plate, the Saints will beat the Foulcons twice too! The Foulcons, guided by Mr. Nappy, will lose thirteen games while winning only three in ‘06. I know you want to believe differently but wishing will not make it so. Vick is number twenty-eight on the hierarchy of accomplishment for quarterbacks, right now, and he will sink lower once he gets on the field and demonstrates what he can’t do, namely pass. The Foulcons will lose their first seven games and little girls like you will cry and moan and talk about the O-line, the D-line, the welfare line and every other thing but the one thing that could elevate this moribund franchise. That would be to get rid of rope-head and put in a true quarterback of great ability-Schaub! Oh, congratulations on that court ruling. Genetic males, such as yourself, should be allowed to marry other genetic males if that is what will make them satisfied as human beings. Keep waving that rainbow flag and keep up your pride in yourself and in your movement. Oh, tell you mom I’ll see her tomorrow night.
