As always, Mets get the reality slap
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
New York — If there was one thing that we all learned about the Braves on Tuesday night, it’s that they’ve got spunk. I mean, here it is the dog days of April, the division race over — and yet the Braves managed to pull together for one magical night to slay the mighty New York Mets, who were 10-2, toppled several countries and ate Godzilla.
Oh, they’ll be talking about this for years.
The morning after the Mets’ resounding, dominating, dare I say overwhelming, 4-3 win over the Braves, a headline in Tuesday’s New York Post blared: “BRAVE NEW WORLD. Mets show Atlanta who’s boss.”
In the Daily News, the game story began: “Don’t worry Braves, there’s always the wild card.”
It’s a wonder anybody made it to game two of the series, what with parade traffic.
Then the Braves won, 7-1.
Keep hope alive.
Just so you know, I did the math. The Mets’ magic number to clinch the National League East over the Braves remains at 145.
“We better get to work,” Marcus Giles cracked.
“That’s New York,” Adam LaRoche said. “I’m sure by next week, the story will be, ‘Better luck next year.’ “
And this: “We’re a few games back in April. We’re not sweating.”
Yes, it’s April on all parts of the globe except Flushing, where it’s October.
Since they last won a World Series in 1986, there generally have been two absolutes about the New York Mets: 1) They’re supposed to be great; 2) They’re not. Only with that coupled entry can a franchise have such spectacular and amusing crashes.
The Mets have watched the Braves win the division all too often. I guess they figure if they have a five-game lead in April, best to milk it for all it’s worth. You would just think that after so much misery and Atlanta’s 14 straight division titles, spring celebrations would be, um, tempered.
“The commissioner tells me we get to play the entire schedule,” Bobby Cox said.
Really?
“Yeah. I talked to Bud today.”
Why does this happen? How is it that clear-thinking people — work with me here, for the sake of argument — can look at the Braves being 6-8 and declare them dead? In the NFL, they would be dead.
In baseball, they haven’t even gone once through the sock drawer yet.
The Braves are now 7-8. But mortal starts are not uncommon for them. They were 7-8 at this time a year ago. They were 33-32 in mid-June. They were 37-40 through June in 2004. They were 26-26 through May in 2001. If there weren’t 162 games, it would be a problem. There are. It isn’t.
The only difference this season is that the Mets actually have lived up to the hype. (Well, some of it.) Over the past two years, they have added Carlos Beltran, Pedro Martinez, Carlos Delgado, Paul Lo Duca and Billy Wagner. Some things, apparently, even the Mets can’t mess up.
But Tuesday was the inevitable reality slap. Andruw Jones hit two home runs. LaRoche hit another. The Braves, playing without Chipper Jones and Edgar Renteria, led 5-0 through three innings — and the Mets hadn’t even set their playoff rotation yet.
Kyle Davies threw a complete game. He allowed only three hits and struck out six. So it turns out that a Braves pitcher actually can throw a strike without Leo Mazzone. OK. So what’s next week’s premature panic attack going to be?
“It seems like the same story every year,” Giles said. “Slow April, hot summer and a disappointing postseason, to be honest with you. The point is there’s no need to worry. It’s just to give people something to write about. Don’t get me wrong — this division is not ours. But there’s definitely no need to panic right now.”
Or celebrate.
Tom Glavine, the former Brave, has seen this race from both sides. He has a little more perspective than Joe from Queens.
“It’s funny,” Glavine said when asked about the hype surrounding this series. “This organization obviously hasn’t had the success we’ve wanted to have. The Braves are the envy of everybody in baseball, except for maybe the Yankees. Any time you have the opportunity to be one up on the prohibitive favorite, people are gonna run with it. As players, we’re more mindful of how this plays out in October than where we are right now.”
Meanwhile, the Mets lost. They’re six games out of last.

Excellent column Jeff! You made some excellent points. The MLB season is a marathon not a sprint. History has shown that, as long as Bobby is managing, the Braves will always be around come October. The Mets have great talent on paper, but some of the players are injury prone. If the Mets can stay healthy, then they will be tough to overcome. The biggest difference in the Braves Organization and the Mets is the depth. As shown in last years run, when one goes down we have 2 others to fill his shoes. The Braves are the top of the class when it comes to scouting and developing their farm. Anyways, this will be another exciting season and no one should worry for a few months anyways. The Braves are historically better in the second half.

The New York media gets more ridiculous by the week. The season is what two weeks old? And the Mets have beat up on the Nats and Marlins and yet it’s over?
Hardly. And the Braves don’t even have the Met killer(Chipper) in the lineup.

Dang gum it Schultzie, I just threw away my season tickets for the Braves, why didn’t you write this sooner? I had given up on the Braves, saluted the Mets (I won’t suggest exactly which finger it was I saluted with) and was preparing to commit Hari Kiri (Ritual Suicide by slicing one’s belly {In my case really large belly}but I couldn’t find a large enough knife, then your article appeared on my computer and I was saved. Thank you so much ;-)
The Mets amazingly enough had their rotation set for the Braves to get their Number 1, 2, and 3 starters. Bobby Cox was so concerned he went with 4, 5 and purely because its his turn number 1 tomorrow. Like their manager the Braves don’t get too high or too low early in the season, they know that their Manager and GM will provide them enough tools to be there in October, and they know no one has ever won 162 games, the object is to have won 1 more than the 2nd place team in your division, the Braves find a way.
Thanks again Schultzie for the life saving column!

Sweet, a Braves fan writing about the Braves! What insight! Yeah, an unhealthy Braves team wowed a lot of people by leading 5-0 through 3 innings against a healthy Mets team. It was amazing how Davies blew through Reyes, LoDuca, Beltran, Delgado, Wright, Floyd, Nady, & Hernandez. And to think our only bench player available was Julio Franco! And to think the Braves could score against Zambrano? Surely that was the most shocking news of the day.
Congrats! I think your column is a day late from meaning anything at all. Update it tonight. Thanks.

outstanding article jeff, i can’t count how many conversations i’ve had with other sports fans concerning this, every pundit in sports was ready to hand the division to mets.
162 games. ONE HUNDRED AND SIXTY TWO METS FANS.
anyone remember the Nationals last year? Enough said. Every year someone is loaded to beat the braves, every year it’s the same old story come august and september.
Chris, you forgot one thing, a healthy mets team managed a 4-3 win against Jorge “Hanging everything” Sosa, with Pedro.
not impressed.

If Huddy can turn it around and Glavine sucks this could start a roll. At some point we will go 51-16, and then we’ll see where we stand. I bet Huddy shaved his Pontiac logo off due to the financial troubles at GM. Did anyone else notice the 2 out production yesterday? 7 runs? Mr. Davies, the bullpen thanks you. And the Bravo Nation. Go Bravos. WOOOOOOOO HOOOOOOOOO!

Every year it seems the NY area based media outlets (NY Post, Daily News, ESPN) go wacky when the Mets put together a couple of wins. You would have thought the Mets had won the World Series if you watched the post game interview/review on ESPN’s Monday night game. Davies and A. Jones gave them a great reality check last night. Welcome to the real world!

Jeff: Great column. Right on point. Keep em coming!
Chris:
Mutts fan criticizing the Braves. Imagine that! Jeff Schultz works for an ATLANTA newspaper. So he writes about the Braves! Are things different in NYC? Do the New York Times staff writers do articles on the Padres? How about the Korean national team? As a newspaper columnist, it’s his job to write things that people will read. I’m guessing that you take the term fishwrap literally and only buy the Times or the Post when you eat fried fish and need something to wrap it in. Also, in case you haven’t noticed.. newspapers generally report the previous day’s game because they can’t hold the daily edition until the end of the baseball game. Enjoy your 4 game lead while it lasts, Chris… but I’ll look at the scoreboard in June and see where the Braves are and see where the Mutts are and I am figuring that things will probably be reversed. And by the way.. that was a nice hat trick by Delgado.. I was hoping he’d go for the Golden Sombrero.

Great Job Jeff, you effectively have poured gasoline on the fire. Let’s see how long the bravado of the Met’s fan’s will last. It will be interesting to see if they are still as bold and braggadocios in September. I was just reading some of the on line sports from a few of the New York rags and just one blowout by the Braves has already brought the doom sayers out of the Met’s woodwork. One even paraphrased the World War II Japanese Admiral Yamomoto Isoroku by saying, “I fear that we have awakened a sleeping giant(Brave), and filled him with a terrible resolve.” Go Braves!!!!

Come on now, I know how much you hate the Mets, but save this stuff for September or October. This is only April, there’s still a looooooong way to go! All last nights’ win proves is each team has won a game against each other…win today, get ‘em again at Turner and then take it from there! Remember, you guys are the ones with the 14 div. titles in a row and NY fans are always the ones to cry foul at the end, save the celebrating until the fall! Give it time, the Mets have NO CLUE what pressure is, they will crack!

You want ridiculous? I am a native Atlantan living in New York, and after Monday’s game I had a conversation with a Mets fan, who, after boasting how the Mets had the largest lead in baseball history after twelve games, promptly told me with 100 percent certainly that a 5 game lead with 150 games to go was absolutely insurmountable! When I informed him that in 1992 (or 93) the Braves came from 10 down with less than two months to go to overtake the Giants, he replied “well, everyone has one lucky year…” Sigh.

Every prediction I’ve seen, yes, including in the dreaded NY media, has said that the division is still the Braves’ until someone takes it from them. Why the heck do you all still lash out as if you have an inferiority complex? You guys are the champs of the division! You’re angry because Mets fans are proud of a hot start after years of disappointment? It’s called “buzz.” It happens when things start looking up. FYI, despite the blaring headlines, NY media has been a lot more respectful of the Braves as a team than this column indicates, and quotes from Mets players have been infinitely more classy than “That’s New York, I’m sure by next week, the story will be, ‘Better luck next year.’” Sure LaRoche, save that quote for the Braves’ next stellar playoff appearance.

As Spring came in the Valley of Mets, lo, the scurry began as fans poured out from behind the rocks and out of the caves and man made tunnels. The fans filled the whole valley and pitched their new, logo laden tents. They built up a great altar, costing more than 200 million shekels and raised upon it a faded pennant, twenty years old. Then they posted a watch to try to guard against the Southern most part of the Valley where the great beast had approached from years past. A few days into Spring, the fans danced and praised around the great altar because their warriors had killed a few muskrats and groundsquirrels, but alas, there appeared a small cloud over the Southern sky, liken unto a Tomahawk. The cloud grew larger as the days past and in-fighting among the fans began. As the Spring and then Summer came to a past the small cloud had grown to be so large that it covered the entire valley. The prophets in the valley jumped upon the altar and cried out to the Mets from July even through August but alas, there was no answer. In September it became clear why all the fans had brought new tents… they folded easily. And all the fans scurried back to their holes and behind their rocks. They hid out in their caves as if in hibernation until the next Spring when they could build an even bigger altar.

PGNY: what have you been watching or reading. All of the “so called experts” that I have heard/read have predicted the Mets to win the division. Nice article sandbagging the Mets and the fact that their last world series title was 1986. But the Braves - 14 division titles, 1 world series title. At least when the Mets make it to the post season, they show up and sell out the ballpark. Can’t say the same for the Bravos!!!!!
By Jamie
April 19, 2006 12:54 PM | Link to this
Funny- C. Strome. The Braves sold out every postseason game in 91, 92, and 93. After 14 years, I can see why they only sell 95 % capacity. But, I guess if you only make the playoffs every 20 years.. i.e. Mets. You probably will sell out your stadium.
By HBG
April 19, 2006 01:00 PM | Link to this
C Strome:
And then, when the Mutts make it to the postseason and play their cross town rivals, they absolutely wet the bed. As far as selling out the postseason.. I believe NYC has a population 10 times that of the entire Atanta Metro area. The Braves are more a regional team because many of the residents of Atlanta are not originally from here and maintain their loyalty to their home town teams. I can’t see a Cubs fan paying to see the Braves in the playoffs when the Cubs are not involved as well. So you and the media can take your postseason sellouts and place them where they properly belong. You may have been to the Series since we have.. but we have a more recent Series win than you do.

Spent the first 25 years of my life in Atlanta, live in New York now, and I gotta say that Jeff couldn’t have nailed this any better. I was actually laughing out loud on Monday night when the crowd gave Pedro a standing O for leaving with a one-run lead in the seventh. Since when is three runs in 6+ standing O material? Then Wagner K’d Betemit and Pratt to win the game, and they went completely bananas.
The tabloids followed suit Tuesday morning. And at work Tuesday, more of the same — the Mets have finally put it together, Braves just don’t seem as dominant as they have in the past, they’ve lost some of their aura, blah, blah, blah…
High comedy. One game, one run, and it’s freaking APRIL!
But it was nice reminder of how lucky we’ve been for the past 15 years — the fans up here are so far removed from winning that they’re actually delusional. I hate the postseason meltdowns as much as the next guy, but as Braves fans, we’ve been totally spoiled watching a winner for this long.

Hey Met fans, enjoy the lead while it lasts. If we are feeling cruel, we may let you hang onto it most of the season before stomping on your heart come September.
You know you don’t stand a chance once the pressure kicks in and it will with all the baggage PrimaDonna Martinez, Tom Oldman, Communist DelGado and Contract Beltran bring with them. And Mike, Beltran hasn’t been one of your better hitters since he was with Houston. And you are right, Floyd is one of your better hitters, that is if he can suit up more than half the season. What are they gonna do when the Braves rookie and reject brigade start breathing down their neck. Its hard to believe you have to spend $120 million to build a team to compete with us. Well done, thats a team you can be proud of and get behind. We hicks sure do like to chirp, we’ve gotten pretty good at it the last 14 years. But I’ll admit it isn’t nearly as sweet sounding as hearing a bunch of brash, crass loudmouth NU YAWKERS crying as their beloved $100 million Mets finish last…AGAIN. Why don’t you morons start hoping for an early football season and throw some energy behind the Giants, at least they have a chance of going to the playoffs.

Looks like Oldman, held up his end of the bargain but the Fools from Flushing forgot to bring their bats again. Man, it must stink to be a Mets fan. All that angst, rage, pent up anxiety, self-loathing and hatred just waiting for the opportunity to be unload on some other teams fans. And this is what you get. Losing 2 of 3 to your nemesis, who shut you down with baseball’s worst pitchers (according to the stats and media). Plus you have a Communist at first base who supports the terrorists that tried to destroy your city. Man, what a great team. Where do I sign up to ride on that band wagon. as a met fan (i went to games at polo grounds ‘62 &’63) I also laugh at how many pennants the METS HAVE WON SINCE 1984. The joke is the ‘86 mets ‘GREATEST TEAM TO WIN ONE SERIES”. While there is reason for more optimism than usual things usually go as usual BRAVES WIN DIVISION GET CHOPPED IN PLAYOFFS!!!!!!!! I have not ordered my playoff or world series tickets yet. We are considered the most savvy sports fans yet we have knicks rangers mets. When they talked about the storied history Stephon King comes to mind. I also laughed at the new york headlines WE ONE ONE IN APRIL.

Dear Braves Haters, Please quit using that LAME putdown about the fan support. What can I say, when the only drama EVERY YEAR FOR FOURTEEN YEARS is how far you will advance in the playoffs, there isn’t a whole lot of clamor for tickets to see the Rockies in the middle of May. If you want to lambaste someone for lack of support, look no further than the Bronx. Here you have the most storied, successful franchise in the history of American sports, who’ve been to the playoffs for 10 years in a row and a payroll full of All-Stars and future Hall of Famers in a city of 12 Million+ and they don’t even sell out every game. Yankee stadium should hold 100,000 people and should have a hairy, neanderthal NU YAWKER in every seat. Until that happens you may want to cut us southern hicks some slack for not being able to get the majority of our 70% transplant city to check out the Braves.

Dont worry pat you wont see the same headlines that you saw Tuesday morning. The race will be over by Labor day. And once again we will celebrate winning the division in September. Maybe Glavine will have a postseason party at his house and invite all the former Braves who left Atlanta for more money to go play for losers, so they can watch the Braves play in the postseason. (You know that mythical part of the season that the Mutts havent been in since 2000.) You can talk all you want about lack of fan support, or the fact that we get beat every year in the playoffs first round, but that still doesnt deter from the fact that WE OWN THE METS!!! If Chipper and Renteria had been in it would have probably been much worse! Go on back to the polo grounds Mutts, nobody will miss ya!!!

I still cant believe we beat them with that skeleton crew of an offense we had out there today. Too bad it isnt September. One of my favorite games I ever attended was back in 1999 between the Braves and Mets. Late September Day game, Seats right behind Mets dugout. 3rd game of a 3 game set, Braves going for sweep. Chipper hit 2 HR’s that day. I’ll never forget Bobby Valentine coming to the top step of the dugout and looking into the stands as the fans were rabidly yelling sweep, sweep, sweep, and waving the brooms. Man was that a great day! I think I’ll get the chance to repeat that this year. Too bad Bobby V is no longer the manager. He was so much fun to rag on.

Hey NYM211. I guess you didn’t hear the score of today’s game did you?? Well since you missed it = Braves 2 NYM 1. That’s 2 out of 3 and the first series in “Your House”!!! And that was without 3/4’s of our starting infield.

Listen, idiot New Yorkers, for once in your life, and try and comprehend something simple and basic. If we had a stinky train that took us staight to an even stinkier stadium, then we would sell out every game too. Instead everyone down here has a job and by the time they got through traffic and all the bad northern drivers they would miss the game.
PS- We just beat you with 5 back-ups. 2ND STRING PLAYERS! Hilarious.
PPS- Your 1st baseman is a blatant, unapolagetic, anti-American communist. Marinate on that, losers.

Hey, metsfanintheatl…We are three games out as of right now, but look at what you just wrote. Who won 2 of 3?? THE BRAVES!!! Too bad, with your 120million payroll, you cant even get to the wildcard.
