Lombardi trophy is won in April
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Free agents in the NFL? Too risky. For every Reggie White, you’re likely to get five Peerless Price clones times a Gus Frerotte and a Monte Beisel. Not only that, few teams ever have traded their way to a world championship. If you wish to play in February someday, as in the Super Bowl, it’s about April right now, as in the draft, as in the Falcons had better continue flashing signs that they finally have a clue when they’re on the clock.
So I’m happy to report that Falcons general manager Rich McKay was studying film of prospective draftees Tuesday in Flowery Branch when I called.
“The core of your team is always going to come from the draft, because free agency is an expensive venture and is mainly used to complement your team and is not used to build your team,” said McKay, who has turned such words into results. He did so in Tampa Bay when he used the likes of Warren Sapp and Derrick Brooks to build the Buccaneers into a perennial contender that went all the way. Plus, since McKay began running a Falcons franchise two drafts ago that was noted for picking tight ends — you know, just because — and relatives to Bozo The Clown, they’ve kept the circus music away during the NFL’s two most famous days in New York.
Twelve of McKay’s picks for the Falcons have played significantly during the past two seasons. In other words, those other moves for the Falcons are mostly for show. McKay disagreed, of course, saying of his four key acquisitions in the offseason, “I expect all of them to help us significantly, because they come at positions where last year we didn’t get the performances that we needed.”
That’s true. But here’s the rest of the story as I see it. As for the good, the Falcons recognized that they were absolutely brutal in the secondary and that they had some ugliness along the offensive and defensive lines.
They responded through the combination of (uh-oh) free agency and trades to acquire Lawyer Milloy and Chris Crocker for those safety positions, John Abraham to play right defensive end and Wayne Gandy to protect a scrambling Michael Vick at left tackle. Just by lining up and breathing, they are better for the Falcons than their predecessors.
As for the bad, how much time do you have? Courtesy of nearly 33-year-old legs, Milloy left his highly productive years with the Patriots when he departed New England after the 2002 season for Buffalo. Then there is Crocker, who likely is better than Keion Carpenter and Bryan Scott, the Falcons’ starters on a squad that was a quarterback’s best friend. Still, if Cleveland Browns coach Romeo Crennel, a defensive wiz, didn’t wish to keep Crocker around to improve one of the league’s worst defenses, you have to wonder if Chris Crocker has a tendency to resemble Betty Crocker.
You also have Wayne Gandy, a stud for the Pittsburgh Steelers. That was back during the dark ages when Milloy was a stud for the Patriots. The New Orleans Saints couldn’t wait to move their fading 12-year veteran and his 315 pounds. The thing is, given the significant number of times that defensive ends used previous Falcons left tackle Kevin Shaffer as an open door toward smacking Vick to the ground, Gandy is an improvement. If nothing else, Gandy has 25 more pounds than Shaffer for a defender to battle his way through.
Finally, Abraham is the certified pass rusher that the Falcons need. In six NFL seasons, he has 53 1/2 sacks, including 10 1/2 last season. The problem? Just like Brady Smith, the Falcons’ previous right defensive end, Abraham has accumulated more than few bumps and bruises. He has missed large chunks of games courtesy of everything from a sports hernia to a damaged knee.
The Falcons are 17 days from what matters the most, though. They won’t have their No. 1 pick (traded to acquire Abraham), but they’ll have six other ones, starting with the 47th in the second round. “We just feel like those guys (Milloy, Crocker, Abraham and Gandy) can help us a lot and help us a lot this year,” McKay said, before adding quickly, “But, typically the guys who are going to help you win year in and year out, those guys come through the draft.”
Yeah, he gets it.

No, you can’t build with free agents. But you can compliment what you have with free agents. The ‘98 Falcon team had a good mixture of veterans, like Bennett, Chandler Robinson, and White to compliment their young stars like Anderson and Brooking. We all saw last year what can happen if you have too many young players. The Redskins were a perfect example of a team trying to build with free agents, and we know how that turned out. There is a fine line that you cannot cross when adding veteran players. Considering the weak areas of the Falcon team last year, I believe McKay has done a good job of bringing in veterans where needed. Time will tell.

McKay is going about it right…filled the most glaring needs thru FA and builds for the future thru the draft…We had alot of people playing out of position on defense last year due to injuries…Imagine if we just stay healthy, especially @ linebacker..this could be the year for the Falcons…..

This offensive line still needs to be addressed. I’m betting that McKay shows his hand towards picking a corner, and then picks a beast of an OL. Don’t be suprised to see the Falcons trade up on draft day either. They have Duckett and Schaub to dangle for the right deal.

Um, gee Terence, here I thought the Lombardi Trophy was won in late January-early February! You see, there is no bearing whatsoever as to which teams signs who in April. There are minicamps, training camps, and preseason games. That means injuries can occur, more high-priced vets. could be released/signed, and the fact that there are 31 other teams out there vying for the same prize. If Super Bowls were won in April, the Washington Redskins would be going for an unprecidented 5th title run right about now! Yeah, and I suppose you think the World Series is won in December/January, then maybe the Royals would be your champions…sheesh, what a moron!

It can be LOST in April, however.

My guess is that if Jimmy Williams is available when Minn. drafts in the first round that Atl will trade Schaub to Minn. that the first round pick and a 4/5 round pick. Jimmy could then contend for a starting safety or corner spot. In the worst case, he would groomed to take over when the old safeties give out.

Terrance, you right on the money. Championships are won in April. The draft has always been and still is the best way to get to the Super Bowl. Look no futher than the last five Super bowl champions. Mr. McKay has proven to be a get king maker. The fans of Atlanta need to give this man time. The team is way better now than it has been in the years past. I would love to see the Falcons address that raggedy offensive line with the first few picks they have.

People, get it out of your head that we should trade Schaub. We need that experience back up QB. He knows our system and he is very mobile. If you bring anyone else in he is going to have to take a crash course in this system. If you trade anybody let it be Duckett.

What TM says doesn’t amount to much in this article, it was more about what McKay stated, that you build your cornerstones through the draft and add through free agency, which he has done a great job of doing. In this draft I would spend no less than two or three picks on offensive line help. NO RECEIVERS PLEASE! I believe they’re ok there.
I believe McKay has a trade in store that hasn’t been leaked yet. We got the veteran leadership that I stress is so important (Abraham, Milloy, Gandy) now all Atlanta needs to do is get that offensive tackle to protect their franchise player.

I’m surprised no one has chimed in on this blog to criticize Mike Vick yet. “He’s the reason we’re losing no matter what FA’s we bring in. Get rid of him because he’s black!” blah blah blah. Ok, now we can have some fun. :)

Don’t worry Jim it’s coming. People probably criticize Mike Vick on the Braves blog too. It’s a fascination with some people.

Jim, you have made a foolish comment about Michael Vick. Sure, he has some growing to do as a quaterback, but to say he is the reason the Falcons are not achieving the success you think they should is a isgn of ignorance of football on your part. Name one player before Michael got here other than Steve B. and Neon Deion that has created a buzz in the NFL about the Atlanta Falcons. You can’t. What about that lousy offensive line? Did you go to any of the games last year? The illegal tactics the Falcons are using are only going to get back for so long. That went the true talent of the team will show in which the Falcons’ offensive line (mainly the interior) has none!
Do Michael Vick needs to take his game to the next level? YES!!!!!!! But does Michael needs some more talent on the offensive line (which I am sure that Mr. McKay will find doing the draft), BY ALL MEANS!!!!!!! Jim, have you forgot when the record of the Falcons was when Michael got hurt? Maybe the record would have not be so ghastly if they had a better line with Matt Schaub. But until the offensive line gets fixed, it really doesn’t matter who back playing quarterback, Michael or Matt(even though the league has stated in the past that Michael is waaaaay more dangerous than Matt.)

Mike Vick stinks, just for the record
By Jim
April 12, 2006 12:55 PM | Link to this
“Good grief” KB, as Dirty Bird mentioned-I was being 100% sarcastic. Vick has great talent but can’t do it all himself(so I guess we agree). All championship teams need complimentary parts around their superstars. Bottom line, this team needs to draft better interior linemen. This game is won in the trenches(on both sides of the ball). The reason they lost last year was because they couldnt stop the run(remember Carolina and Tampa running right th rough them at the end of the year?)They also couldnt protect Mike Vick. They have the talent, they just need to go back to being old school dirty SOB’s on both sides of the ball.
As for the draft(finally getting to the original subject)-I’ll leave that to McKay, who is doing a good job. You build your team through the draft, and FA’s are just your complimentary parts.
By FalconsFan
April 12, 2006 01:15 PM | Link to this
They also couldnt protect Mike Vick.
Jim - The reason they couldnt protect Mike Vick is that Vick can not be counted on to stay in the pocket. How does any offensive line protect Vick when they never know if he is going to change direction, run the other way the play is called, or run up the middle if he sees a opening. Word from camp is that last years offensive line was very frustrated getting critized so much when Vick was making his own problems not following blocking schemes.
Get my drift?
By Jimmy
April 12, 2006 01:45 PM | Link to this
Falcon-The key is to find the medium between staying in the pocket(does he not make his reads too quickly?) AND running(unless its a designed run play)-A la Steve Young. The guy was as accurate as it gets yet could take off and burn the D for a 30 yd td run(in his earlier years anyway).
Of course Young had a hall of fame WR, some all pro O linemen, TE and a hall of famer in the def. backfield.
My point is that people need to get off of Vick’s jock already. Don’t blame him when the team has a poor season just like he shouldnt get all of the credit for a good season.
By DIRRTYBIRD
April 12, 2006 02:40 PM | Link to this
Word from camp was also that all of these lineman are undersized and picked in the late rounds of the draft. Not one 1st or second rounder. They couldn’t protect Schaub either. Remember the game where Schaub came in for one play and was sacked for a safety? I’m sure that Vick can be hard to protect from the way he plays, but even when he did try to stay in the pocket, the defense was right in his face. This offensive line is awful at pass protection. No two ways about it. It needs to be addressed early and often in the draft. Anybody can get in the game and cut block someone. That’s why they choose 7th rounders to start. Remember one big thing. Pass Protection and run blocking are two completely separate things. Draft to protect your franchise.

FalconsFan,
Stop claiming to be an NFL insider…”word around camp is that last years offensive line was very frustrated”. How would you know? That argument is probably one of the dumbest that gets posted on this site more than any others. When Vick is sacked, 9 times out of ten, it is not because Vick has rolled out and is caught by a slower less agile defensive linemen. When he’s sacked is usually on the 3rd step of his 3-step drop. Surely the linemen know where he’s supposed to be between taking the snap and completing a 3-step drop. Anonymous posting of bullsh*t is the major drawback to having blogs. You sir, do not contribute anything useful to this blog.

I see a team as a core fortified with FAs. The stars and future core of the team come from the draft.
Da Boirds are no different. They supplemented well at 4 spots, although more vet help is needed to make a run this year. Personally, I’d like to see them add via FA: LCB Ty Law, No Charles Woodson- That has Eugene Robinson written all over it DT (Grady Jackson perfect fit.Complements and anchors the DL. Option 2 if available Brentson Buckner) OLB Lavar Arrington if not cost prohibitive, also some concern about being a team player;all world talent. Option 2 Peter Boulware (if still available) OG Matt Stinchcomb Opt 2 Tutan Reyes. Either are an upgrade and take away from division opponets
At Safety I tend to agtee with TM on Crocker but would like to seewhat he could do surrounded by the other 10.
Trade*: Schaub,Weiner, Boley and 6th or 7th to NYJ for their #1 and pick the Brick at OL. * trade made only if Ferguson is still on the board (I think the Aints may take him)
Then draft:
Last pick (if pick’s available) Babatunde Oshinowo, Jr. DT Stanford 6’2” 309
5th:Thomas Howard OLB UTEP 6’3” 240 SLEEPER
4th: traded
3rd: Ryan O’Callaghan OT Cal. 6’7” 340
3rd: Daryn Colledge OT Boise St. 6’5” 309
2nd: Antonio Cromartie CB FSU 6’3” 207
And finally add a few non drafed collegians for back up/developmental roles like QB & DT.

Cool. We only had a few Vick haters answer the blog today. That’s a start. By the time playoffs roll around, maybe those few will wise up and get with the program. It all starts up front. I am glad that the Falcons have finally recognized that. They will be a better team for it. Fortify with FA and build depth through the draft. I belive our franchise is in good hands, just as long as Mora and his staff don’t mess it up. Hy Anenzede, great job! Thats how REAL Falcon fans post on a blog.

How do you know that I dont have inside information and I shared it. Thats whats wrong with these blogs is they lack integrity because of people like you.
3 step drop huh. What about the times Vick carries the ball with one hand, showboating like he is the next coming of Deion. How many times did Vick Fumble the ball this past season doing that ? It bordered on being ridiculous from a Pro Bowl player. They teach players to cover the ball in Pee Wee league. Maybe Vick dont like to listen much. He has such fast feet he can do as he pleases. Rookies say… Mike can we meet up at 0700 to get some throwing in ? No But I will see you rooks about 9 after breakfast.
Yeh I know all the Vick lovers are going to come out and try to say its not true. Vick is our Super Bowl QB, Vick will improve this year, Vick will not feign injury, Vick will not lay out of practises , Vick will not….. ahhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!

I would like to start off by saying that Rich McKay is the best in the business. I like the moves he made this year in free agency, even if Romeo didn’t believe in Crocker, or if Abraham has been hurt, and even if Milloy and Grady are old. I will stand behind Rich the whole way and hope he does not get the position of the NFL commisioner, (maybe that is a little selfish)but anyway, I see us having a great year and can’t wait for draft day. Go McKay! Go Falcons!

I knew this was coming. The temptation to bash Vick, regardless of the blog topic, is just too great to resisit. for some. Max Jean-Gilles would be a terrific pick up in the 3rd round if he lasts that long. He is the fourth highest rated guard coming out on most “experts” board. I believe he could come in and start right away. After all, he couldn’t do any worse than Lehr. Cromarte is another player that I feel could start right away. With Hall, Cromarte, Milloy, and Crocker, we very well could go from the worst secondary in the division to the best. Even though we don’t have a first round pick, as of yet, this still is a very interesting and potentially exciting upcoming draft.

I see where the Falcons are taking a look at a couple of young quarterbacks, one being D.J. Shockley. I have a feeling that this will spark more of the Schaub trade rumors. Starting quarterback in the NFL is one of the most fragile positions to play in professional sports. The need to have a reliable, quality back up quarterback is vital to a team’s chance of a successful season. The thought of extra draft picks for Schaub is very tempting, but in October or November, if Vick goes down, I would feel a whole lot better seeing number 8 run out onto the field.

Why are you jumping all over the place now with your topics? I hope you have the balls to show up on this blog during the season without changing your alias. How about we trade email addresses on the blog so that i can ridicule your dumb ss for the entire season. You must be K. Schaffer, he’s the only idiot that would come up with something as preposterous as that last post. He/You will be exposed in Cleveland for what you are. A 290 lb sack of immobile sht.
A comparison to consider: Vick fumbled 11 times last year compared to only 5 for P. Manning. However, Vick was sacked twice as many times and rushed 69 more times for 552 more yards and 6 TD’s (compared to Mannings 0). That’s probably worth the 6 additional fumbles.

As for exchanging emails, I will meet you on the corner instead and we can settle this. Your such a small fry in a pond of big fish.
The six extra fumbles by Vick kept us from the playoffs butt head.
Looking forward to the draft.
If the Falcons are dumb enough to trade Schaub, I can just hear it now in October when Vick goes down, and in for QB for the Atlanta Falcons is DJ Shockley. The season will be over when that happens. Good move Falcons.
Looking forward to the draft .

When the 15th pick is up, study the players left on the board, then ask yourself if you would take Abraham over what you see. The biggest surprises of every draft are in the 1st rd. and some excellant talent will definately slip to the 15th pick. This team is not a DE away from going to the SB, but the 15th pick could make a difference for years to come.

I would like for the falcons players to read this message if possible Alot of people think that vick should run but me a football player myself dont think so dont you people think he gets tired and hurt just like other people he should only run when he needs to i think he should stay in the pocket because i dont want any other quarter back better than him because the falcons are my favorite team and vick is my favorite player i look up to him and i dont even know him so he should stay in the pocket and let her rip because he has an arm he just dont have protection but enough with vick i love the way mckay, blank, and mora brong in all these talented players me myself thought they where going to keep that first round pick and draft corner back jimmy williams out of virgina tech and give up schab for abraham but im glad they did what they did nice job guys go kick some but this year and bring that lambardi treophy home to atlanta in 2006-2007 season bring it home.
