I think…
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Yes, it’s another of those “I think” things, and not exactly by popular demand. But what the heck.
I think the Broncos and Panthers will win Sunday.
I think Florida will lose one of its next two games — on the road against Tennessee and South Carolina — if not both.
I think Georgia Tech looks exactly like the Tech team of 2002-3, the one with Chris Bosh and Ed Nelson and most all the guys who wound up playing for the 2004 NCAA title, the one that couldn’t win on the road and thereby missed the 2003 NCAA tournament despite a vast amount of talent.
I think the Hawks have again statistically positioned themselves to win the lottery, and if they get lucky this time I think they’ll take Rudy Gay of UConn, who is — yes! — another of those 6-foot-8 guys Billy Knight loves.
I think there’s only one reason for a player ever to go into the stands, and Antonio Davis found it. Or, more precisely, it found him.
I think the Braves have already found a closer. Trouble is, Roger McDowell has been retired for almost a decade.
I think Duke and Connecticut will play for the (men’s) NCAA title.
I think Duke will win.
I think anybody who hasn’t tried satellite radio probably should.
I (still) think Mark Richt needs an offensive coordinator.
I think I’d hire Jim Murphy (Davidson AD, formerly Homer Rice’s assistant at Georgia Tech) to succeed Dave Braine if I were Wayne Clough.
I think I’m as apt to become president of a college as Peyton Manning is to win Teammate of the Year.

I think that there is no way Florida will lose either of its next two games. And I KNOW satellite radio is a waste of money.

I think the Braves will not make the postseason.
I think I’d love to hear Furman Bisher refer to the stadium as BRYANT-Denny Stadium.
I think there should be a blog run by the FANS OF CHAN club. (Still waiting to be invited to join that elite group!).
I think Carter Strickland should write elsewhere, and hire me to write for the UGA blog!

Elaborate on who Richt should hire. I’m inclinded to agree that he should let someone else call the plays. I’m just not sure who.

I think if the Hawks sign, trade for, draft, workout, or even look at another 6’8 player I am going to stab myself in the eye with an ice pick. However seeing how Knight has a fetish with males over 6’8 but under 6’10 that can attempt to dribble and shot, anyone know of where I can find a cheap Ice Pick And a case of Whiskey to numb the pain?

After listening to 680 this morning suggest that the Falcons should draft Marcus Vick.
I think Arthur Blank is not really as business smart as he has let on, if he even contemplates doing that.

Bradley, as long as it’s okay with geechee and samoandawg, consider yourself a FAN OF CHAN!
There are no meetings (besides on the blogs) or membership fees to speak of. Just let every Tech fan you know, or talk to, or blog to, know how much you love Chan Gailey the Coach and (hopefully) soon-to-be Tech AD!
Bradley, to ammend your statement about Manning, he’s not likely to be named teammate of the year, and he’ll never, ever win a Super Bowl, either.
He’s Dan Marino with non of Marino’s class.
It’s that simple!
I think Mark is wrong about one thing:
The Steelers are going to win the Super Bowl. Nothing that Denver showed me on Saturday says they’re good enough to beat the Steelers. Yes, the Steelers only beat Manning the Choke Artist in the postseason, big whup. Kind of like all of those no-name managers who continually beat Bobby Cox in the postseason, no big deal, right? But the Steelers where a Roethlisberger injury away from winning their division. They may be the sixth seed, but they’re the best on in the history of the NFL and the expanded playoffs began in 1990. The Steelers are strong everywhere… from top to bottom. They have pro-bowl talent at QB, WR, RB, TE, CB, SS, FS, LB, and on both lines. Looking back at it, as LoMax Howell loves to do, the Steelers came into the playoffs on a tear with a team strong enough to beat anyone and everyone. Plus, they’re playing an AFC Championship Game away from their own personal house of horrors… their home stadium.
Steelers win the Super Bowl. And honestly, it really doesn’t matter who the NFC sends. Kind of like in the mid 80’s to late 90’s with the AFC, the NFC just isn’t that good.
And Jake Delhomme is a trash talking punk. But notice he’s only flapping his lips when his team is winning. Remembering the look on his face after Super Bowl XXXVIII still brings a smile to my face. There is only one player in the NFL easier to root against than Delhomme… and it’s T.O.
And Steve Smith commits offensive pass intereferance on every play where the ball is thrown his way. Look at past games… it’s true. The guy gets away with murder, like tripping that Bears CB, and having the CB called for pass interferance.

I’m tired of people comparing Manning to Marino. Marino had no real team around him, Peyton has the most talent of any team in the NFL surrounding him. Marino actually got his team to the Super Bowl (damn Montana ….j/k). Marino’s best running threat in all his years was some RB named after a Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Peyton on the other hand has had James. Lets not compare the two, they are white and can throw TD passes at a big clip per season, but Manning is not close to Marino.
Now I will get off my soapbox.
By Matthew
January 19, 2006 05:05 PM | Link to this
I agree…
Marino has more class in his little toe than all of the Mannings combined. Marino was never handed anything on a silver platter, like those guys were. He was the last QB drafted in the first round from that awesome class, and he came from that western Penn backround that is a hardscrabble life.
And yes, I believe that if Marino had the Colts awesome talent, he’d have won a Super Bowl, especially this year. That just goes to show how big of a choker Manning really is.
But the fact remains that Manning and Marino will be forever joined because they both have great stats and no ring. It’s not fair to Marino to be lumped with Manning, but that’s the way it goes.
By The Undisputed Truth
January 19, 2006 05:08 PM | Link to this
This is not diminish the greatness of Marino, but …
Two years before Marino led the Fins to the Super Bowl, David Woodley led the Fins to the Super Bowl.
It’s not as if Marino was drafted by the worst team in the league. Miami was already a playoff team when he got there. If you recall, Marino slipped to the bottom of the first round because of a sub-par senior season at Pitt.
True, Marino didn’t have as many weapons that Manning has, but you could also make the argument that the AFC wasn’t as strong then as it is now.

Tying in the blog about Kovalchuk, I think this year Kovalchuk is going to become the second biggest sports star in Atlanta (Vick being number one). If he keeps his current scoring pace and the Thrashers make their first playoffs and get past the first round, all which are almost sure to happen now that we have our number one goalie back. Fans love good teams, but more importantly, Fans gravitate towards great players, and Kovalchuk is one of those.
By the way the Play-by-play Radio Broadcaster of the Thrashers game is quite possibly the best broadcaster ever. He brings so much energy to each little event in the game that you can’t help but be excited at even a common faceoff.

If I’m the Seahawks, I would just ignore everyone else on offense and just put anywhere from 3-5 players on Steve Smith at all times. If you lose then so be it, but you cannot let Smith do you like he did Chicago and everyone else.
Half their offense is WR screens, so just put 3 guys at all times in front of Smith at the line of scrimmage. If Goings beats me, I’ll understand, but if I lose because Smith ended up once again WIDE OPEN for a 4o yd TD, That’s inexcusable.

I think the silly hockey team in Atlanta should move to Canada. As a mover and a shaker in and around the southeast, this is an issue I frequently have to confront. Quite frankly, its embarrassing to introduce myself to someone and then tell him or her that I’m from Atlanta. That is what hockey has done to our town. The Thrashers were a cute little novelty “sport” that has run its course. Its time for them to go now. Hopefully we’ll run em out of town on a rail like we did the last silly hockey team we had. We can only hope.

Larry, did they already close the other blog about Kovalchuk? you were on there talking about how you hate hockey and now you moved here. Its ok the Thrashers don’t expect everyone in Atlanta (pop. roughly 4,500,000) to like them so they are not worried about losing you as a fan.
And by the way we are embarrassed that you say you are from Atlanta too, so don’t worry, the feeling is mutual.

Does EVERYTHING in you dawgs’ world revolve around football? When you see a doughnut, do you think “Snack for UGA”?
Not whining, just curious. (I do like the hockey dialogue and agree that rather than spew garbage about the Thrashers, either get on board or get out of the way of those who will support it).

I used to be a CPA with an MBA. Now I practice law. I’m not sure what your definitions of ignorance and stupidity are. If anything, I’m overqualified to give an opinion on anything sports related. When I’m wining and dining with the elite super rich of Atlanta, the topic of hockey sometimes comes up. All of us Atlanta elitists believe the sport should be boxed up and sent back to Canada. I’ll sip a cocktail to that. As for your assumption that I am a hick, well chap, I live in Virginia Highlands. Lets put it this way: If Donald Trump moved to Atlanta, he would want to be my neighbor. About Atlanta being a better city without Hockey, I don’t see it. It cost the city nothing basically, since they are using the Hawks building, If they needed a new arena, then maybe I would agree with your because of the cost analysis. But currently now that they are getting rid of their expansion rust and winning, they are only adding to the city of Atlanta.

True story, and funny: One of my socailly elite friends was watching the game on his $15,000 65 inch LCD flat panel. When Bettis fumbled the ball he threw his beer bottle through the screen in a fit of rage. (Ive seen the damage myself) He had 500 on the Steelers winning too. Eventually of course, the Steelers won, but hes still in the hole about 14.5k.
When Bettis fumbled I went into shock. I couldnt talk and began twitching involuntarily. I was so disillusioned I actually thought Manning would win the game! Fortunately, before any long term side effects set it, Manning showed us all his true colors (deja vu on that line). And I could collect from my bookie.

Thats the million dollar question: How will the Braves do this year? As a high roller, I wouldnt touch that question with a ten foot pole. My instinct tells me they CANT finish first again, but its tough to bet against a streak like a chain of 14.

David Duncan, haven’t all Braves “fans” been saying for the past 10 + years that the Braves are going to finish last in their division in the coming season? Yet they still haven’t, I tend to lean towards the manager with the 14 straight division Pennants on this one and say until they actually lose, we should all assume that somehow Cox will end up number one in the division AGAIN.
By Matthew
January 19, 2006 10:48 PM | Link to this
DavidU,
Honestly, has there been a more overrated streak in the history or sports than the Braves winning division “titles”?
What has it brought. One World Series?
The Boston Celtics won something like 10 Divisions in a row. And in that time, they won 9 NBA Titles.
UCLA won 10 Titles in a row.
The 49ers won 5 Super Bowls in 13 years. The Steelers 4 in 6. The Cowboys and Patriots 3 in 4.
Those are streaks of importance. Streaks that really meant something. Streaks that won championships.
Ask Larry-50. I’m sure he’s made millions betting against Bobby Cox.
The Braves “streak” of division “titles,” is a product of the Braves PR Department trying to stem the losing tide of fans not buying into their bulls—t. They destroy their stadium by filling it with games and distractions and other worthless crap, and a Cartoon Network monstrosity all to hide the fact that they’ve really not won anything but one single, solitary World Series since 1991.
To call the Braves string of playoffs appearances “historic” is an insult to all those streaks which produced something real, and tanglible: multiple championships. The idea of winning division “titles”, especially in the age of the Wild Card, is a farce of large proportions.
By Larry

Hey Matthew, as a Braves fan let me at least say this:
I’d rather win 14 division titles in a row than not win 14 division titles in row.
Does the streak mean anything? Yes. Is it as important as 14 straight World Championships? No. These questions are obvious.
A lot of us Braves fans are proud of what Bobby and Co have done over the past 14 seasons. I’m proud of the streak, as are a lot of other Braves fans. It could be better, but objectively, its not that bad. You’re just trying to spread around your hate and discontent, stemming from your failures in the Marine Corps. Maybe you should go to the VA and get some professional help. Oorah!

Yeah, Lar, that’s exactly what it is.
I’m projecting.
It’s not my fault tat the truth hurts, Col. Reb.
Let me ask you this, with all of the millions you’ve made in your gambling, how many of that came on betting on the Braves?
Oh, what that… none.
That’s the true test, Col. Reb.
If they’re not worth betting on, if they’re a losing proposition to bet on them, guess it’s not all that special.
And it’s ooh-rah, Col. Reb. OOH-RAH.
And I don’t consider my time spent in the Corps as a failure. More like… unfinished business.
But that’s life, right Lar? You win some, you lose some. Nothing like a gambling addict to help me put that in perspective.

Larry you are an idiot. Every big city in this country has a NHL team. New York, LA, Chicago, Boston, Dallas, they all have them and they all are apart of their cities pride(except in Chicago where their owner has ruined that franchise). You have no idea what you are talking about.
And Mathew the only teams that have been more successful than the Braves in the postseason during this streak are the Yankees, Blue Jays, and Marlins. Every other team has one world series and usually then fallen off of the face of the earth, see the Red Sox, Twins, Diamondbacks, Angels, even the Blue Jays fell off after 1993.
And the play by play announcer for the Thrashers on the radio is Dan Kamal. The best in the business.

Scott: You just proved Matthew’s point about the “success” of the Braves. For their 14 year string of division titles, which is very impressive indeed, 3 other teams have been more successful than the Braves. That just leaves a bitter pill to swallow, don’t you think? And the fact that the Blue Jays and Marlins have fallen off numerous times within that streak makes it even worse, especially the Marlins who have won 2 World Series while finishing lower than the Braves in the standings. The Braves have to seal the deal and I mean VERY soon because the window is closing more and more with each October failure. Yes, you do have that one championship but so do the Twins, Diamondbacks, Angels, Red Sox, and White Sox. So, for all the hard work of winning 14 divisions in a row, these 5 teams have all equaled the Braves in the thing that matters the most, which is the ring, and all 5 did it without as much stress as the Braves, who are constantly being hounded and having to answer all those questions about another ‘Flop’tober looming in the shadows. I know it shouldn’t be like that, but everyone only remembers the champions, not the runner-ups!

Scott, you also proved my point as well. Look at those cities you mentioned: NY, Dallas, Boston, Chicago, LA. Talk about misreable, sorry, disguisting places to live. These are not exactly cities that I want Atlanta to imitate. Some other characteristics of those cities are: high crime rates, high levels of disease, poverty, inflation, smog, etc. etc. I’m not going to jump right out and say hockey has been the downfall of those cities but… is that something we really want to risk? I think if we leave hockey to the Canadiens and football to the Americans we’ll be just fine. Good day!

I agree with your picks, Mark. Denver and Carolina. Anythoughts on who you’re picking in the Super Bowl, or do you wish to “wait and see” who gets there first?
I’ll take a stab at it. I’m going with Carolina to win the whole thing. Unfortunately, that will mean the Panther fans will be more overbearing than ever when they visit the Georgia Dome next year. In 1994, the Carolina Panthers didn’t exist. If they win, it will kinda “frost me.” Here the Falcons, 40-years in, have three division titles and one NFC title. This is Carolina’s 3rd trip to the Conference Title game. They’re 1-1 so far. And they nearly won that Super Bowl vs. New England. I could root for the Panthers, except that they’re in our division. I’ve listened to the arguement that says “An NFC South team winning the Super Bowl makes our division look better.” Does that work for you?? Is that any consolation for the pathetic 2-6 finish down the stretch for an 8-8 season?
How much stock do people really put in the fact that three of the four NFC South teams finished .500 or better? It’s a “footnote” in NFL history.
I’ve also listened to the arguement that says, “At least the Panthers are a southern team.” Yeah, that’s nice and all, but they’re still in our division and we’ll have to listen to them all year.
Let’s go ???? Seahawks???? I don’t know.

I had a friend like that back when I lived in Mobile, and all of us within the circle we hung with, thought he was an arrogant, presumptuous blue-blood p******, in general.
But he picked up the tab.
HAHA. Larry, if you’re practicing law and doing well, hey, congrats. But who the hell brags about their income and standing in the community to make a point about a SPORT?
And last I checked, folks in those higher tax brackets were the minority in this country. They can buy republican congressmen and senators, but they usually don’t buy up arenas and falsely inflate TV ratings and snatch up souveniers.
The Thrashers are on the cusp of filling their bandwagon, much the way the Braves did in 1991, when, in seasons before, people questioned whether or not Atlanta was a market capable of supporting a baseball team. The Falcons, too, had people wondering if Atlanta was a pro football town before 1998, and more recently in the Michael Vick era.
Turns out it was all about the on-field product.

Satellite radio whether it’s XM or Sirius is nice to have. I have Sirius in my vehicle and XM at home. Sirius has an NFL channel (124) that gives you discussion, news and opinion year round. They broadcast all NFL games with all local broadcasts. Believe me the NFL has changed from “The Off Season” to the “non-Season” in the last few years. The people they have on the air reads like a “Who’s Who” of the NFL. First class all the way. And they don’t sugar coat any subject. XM does Major League Baseball the same way Sirius does the NFL. Music of all kinds without commercial interuption. Cost is less than 10 bucks a month and no static. It’s changing the way AM/FM stations do business. Another thing it’s done is keep me out of these blogs. Here it’s the same old thing every day. Name calling and mindless jabs when blogs are supposed to be discussions about issues and not if someone is… well you know. That’s why I rarely partake anymore.

Ron, you and I don’t see eye to eye very often, but when you’re right… you’re right.
As for my time on the internet… sorry mother, I’ll try to do better.
Notice the large ammount of time between posts. It’s called school and work.
Anyway… the Steelers win the Super Bowl. They just have that team of destiny about them, plus the fact that they are a damn good football team without any major (or minor) injuries.

I think too much has been made of Manning’s comments. He’s still a class act. Here’s another thing to consider - HE WAS RIGHT.

See what y’all have done to Matthew?
By having the audacity to disagree with my darling son, you’ve turned him into a vicious, mean-spirited, self-loathing, pompous, egomaniacal, judgemental twit!
But daddy still loves you, Matty! Even if you did spend last summer with those two randy cowpokes on Brokeback Mountain … oh, well, let’s not go there again.
Don’t forget to write, Matty! And don’t forget to bring me that GORGEOUS pink chiffon! Toodles!
P.S. Matty, if anybody else asks why you left the Marines … well, just remember, you don’t have to tell them a THING!

Matthew is not in college, everyone! He works as a stock clerk for minimum wage. I already told you guys that!

Paul, If Vick had said what Manning had said we all would have crucified him, for being a lousy teammate, but the great Peyton gets a pass? Manning has the audacity to overrule his coach and then he blames the rest of the team instead of his happy feet for the lousy throws that skipped all over the RCA Dome’s turf all day long (he was throwing those low balls, not his O-line). The fault rested more with the protection schemes implemented by the Coaching staff, and his constant audibles, which in this game did nothing but hurt and leave wide open lanes up the middle for the Steelers to blitz. Manning always changes protection on the edges, and the Steelers and Chargers figured it out and just sent the safety or MLB up the middle too.
How about we go back to talking sports, seeing how this is a SPORTS blog. If you want to have a conversation about lifestyles, why don’t you guys go to a different page.

I think the AJC needs to give more time to the Thrashers.
I think Mark Richt needs a Defensive Coord.
I think the Falcons should stand clear of Mularkey(Take my word for it-Bills fan).
I think Vick is in the wrong offense
I think the Hawks need to figure some things out soon. I can’t remember the last time they won something.

The Hawks need an intervention or something. I’m going to make posters for Monday’s game: NO MORE SMALL FORWARDS—— THIS MEANS YOU, KNIGHT. ———PUT DOWN THE PHONE! DO NOT ACCEPT ANY TRADES FOR MORE PLAYERS WHO ARE 6’9….NO MORE. Its kind of long for a poster, so it’s still a work in progress.

I think that all sports talking heads assume that Manning and the Colts would have WON in OT if only VanderJerk had made the FG. Then all the “Manning is a choker” talk would not be happening and the Colts would be favored over Denver. Ironic isn’t it?

Who knows what Dungy wanted to do in that situation, he probably got overruled by Peyton. Dungy is a Defensive minded coach, so probably would have wanted to go for the FG, thus no 40 yard bombs into the end zone at Wayne, instead would have tried to get a couple more yards (maybe even run James for the first down, since all the Steelers were doing was blitzing at that point) to make the FG more manageable, it was a make able FG but could have been attempted closer. We’ll never know since Peyton is the one who runs that team. Dungy should just leave the Colts, he’s not appreciated there, I couldn’t believe Peyton waved off the punt team. If that 4th down conversion had not worked, would he have taken the blame, or said, it was because of protection issues too? Like previous posts, never bet on Peyton in a big game, he’s a choker.

I think I have some useful advice for others who come to the blogs for insightful sports comments.
I think if you skip over all of Matthew’s posts, like I do, you can cut your reading time in half, and enjoy that time twice as much.
I think little Matthew probably cries himself to sleep each night, mourning the life he doesn’t have.

RON I agree with you about 98% on the time but ( they can buy Democrats as well as Republican Congreeman and Senators) believe me I know first hand. I love to read your views on Sports.
