Tuesday Countdown: Lil’ Vick, Sutter, Ilya
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
10: So does this mean Marcus Vick will go to the Hokie pokey, unless he turns himself around? ‘Cuz, that’s what it’s all about.
9: I can’t believe I just wrote that. Just one more illustration why the Pulitzer committee doesn’t hand out awards for blogs.
8: Seriously, I’m not even certain Marcus Vick was going to get drafted BEFORE the gun incident. Yes, he has talent. But it’s not like the guy has proven so much when he actually has played that it compensates for the bag of junk that comes with him. And a bag of stuff for a quarterback is like a bag of stuff times 10. Plus, he is generously listed at only 6-0. Exactly what is it that makes him such a great NFL prospect?
7: I mean, if a guy can’t stay out of trouble in college when so much time is occupied by games, practices, workouts and classes (theoretically, anyway), what’s going to happen when he has cash in his pocket as a pro and he’s got nothing but time?
6: And enough with dumping on Michael Vick for not giving his brother more guidance. Marcus is his own man. Or his own punk.
5: Only one former player (Bruce Sutter) drew enough votes to make it into the Hall of Fame Tuesday. I don’t get it. I voted for 8 to 10 guys. There’s this prevailing attitude among many HOF voters that goes something like this: “Well, Player X deserves to get in one day, but not this year.” I’m sorry. Either a player deserves to be enshrined or he doesn’t. Making Andre Dawson, Jim Rice, Orel Hershisher and others wait another two, three or seven years is nonsensical.
4: The most amusing thing about the Ilya Kovalchuk-Sidney Crosby tiff was Kovalchuk suddenly casting himself as the wise, sage and disciplined veteran. Nothing against Ilya, who is maturing nicely. But he wrote the book on dumb things to say and do as a cocky 18-year-old rookie.
3: From Hall of Fame to Hall of Shame: Marcus Vick, Maurice Clarett, Lawrence Phillips … what a team we could build for the big game against the Guards.
2: The Georgia Force keeps sending me e-mails with practice updates. Who’s the Georgia Force?
1: Jim Mora: $25,000 for talking on a cellphone. Sean Taylor: $17,000 for spitting on a player. Welcome to the NFL.

The Georgia Force must be some kind of Star Wars knock-off of some kind for Georgians.
To quote Chaka Luther King (Chris Rock) from the immortal Jay and Silent Bob Strikes Back:
“George Lucas gonna sue somebody!”
As for Michael and Marcus.
Michael should have done better for his punk brother than buying him an Escalade and every toy he wanted. I know you want to take care of your family when you hit it big, but you should do so responsibly. Take care of your mother. Of your kids. Giving all of those things to Marcus gave the kid a sense of entitlement which he never earned, nor deserved. Ask my boss, who was still on VaTech’s campus when Marcus arrived. He said the kid rolled up in his Escalade with his posse, acting the punk we’ve all come to know.
Michael deserves some blame for catering to his brothers every whim.

Congratulations to Bruce Sutter! Not only did he revolutionize the split-finger fastball as a closer, he was and still is a true gentleman. Being a Brewers fan, I still remember the 1982 World Series vs. the Cardinals like it was yesterday (in fact I have all 7 games on tape) and, even though we hit him pretty good, he closed us out when it mattered the most for, not 1 inning, but 2 innings. You just don’t see that hardly at all these days. But, what I remember the most from him wasn’t any pitch in a game, it was after the World Series while he and his teammates were celebrating. Instead of crowing and saying they were the greatest in the world, the first thing he said was “give credit to the Milwaukee Brewers, they have a wonderful ballclub, and it’s a shame that someone had to lose. They are champions as well in my eyes.” Talk about a class act. He didn’t have to say that, but that was just Bruce Sutter. It’s a shame he didn’t have much left when he came to Atlanta, but even when he was struggling with his control and injuries, he would still take the time to talk to the fans…I should know, I still have an autographed baseball signed by him in 1986, here in Atlanta with only about 3,000 in attendance, and he was extremely personable and made me feel like a million dollars. I’ll always remember that and him! Way to go Bruce, you are not only a true champion, but a true gentleman as well! You deserve this!

Congrats to Bruce Sutter. This is way overdue! I had the pleasure of playing baseball with Bruce’s son Chad during the late 1980’s…at a time when Bruce was struggling with injuries. He took the time to coach our little league team and was one of the most gracious and giving individuals I have been around. He is truly a class act.

Matthew quit hating on Micheal Vick for being able to give his family what he wants, because Marcus would be an idiot with or without an Escalade. Not everybody is going to live up to the publics expectations or fit into this box. Besides one person does not make a family bad. Or maybe your ENTIRE family is perfect! GO FALCONS!

Being a little brother to Mike, Marcus Vick has made some serious bad judgments. He will probably continue to be a thug until he decides to be a responsible citizen, but until he will be “jail house bound”, where he belongs.

Grow up people! Mike is his brother not his Father! If any of you try and tell me you had parental influence on your younger brothers I will tell you you are a liar! Marcus is a young punk who think he’s got it all figured out! Mike’s words will carry weight as soon as Marcus discovers he HAS SEVERLY screwed his life up! Not a moment sooner than that! STOP BLAMING MIKE FOR EVERYTHING!

It’s a shame Marcus Vick has so messed up what most would consider “the chance of a lifetime.” Imagine the regret he’ll feel all the rest of his days. “I coulda been somebody. I coulda turned pro. I even had ‘name recognition.’” Oh well. Maybe Marcus still has a chance.
I like what Ilya Kovalchuk did. Someone needed to get in Crosby’s face. The league has bent over and grabbed its proverbial “ankles” to promote this kid.
Was there ever this much fuss over the “Ovechkin Sweepstakes?” Okay, to be fair, only five teams, not 30, had a crack at Alexandre Ovechkin.
Still, Ilya showed “moxy,” and I liked it.
The Thrashers actually are developing “rivalries” now. First the Leafs, then the Heatley-led Senators, now the Penguins. It’s almost as if hockey is really BACK on the map in Atlanta.

I’m not blaming Michael…
I’ve never said one cross word about MV7.
But come on, spoiling Marcus has obviously made his attitude and misplaced sense of entitlement worse.
In that, Mike must share some blame.

Sounds like two peas in a pod. Both are too short to effectively pass in the NFL. Both act like they are above their teammates and perspective leagues. One threatens assault with a gun, the other knowingly infects women with an incurable diease. The Vick family should be proud.

To me, I see little difference in the Vick Bros, gang banger clothes, kewl corn rows, hop along walk and arrogant talk. The nut falls not for from the tree. You too listen up Jimbo. Also, if there’s a problem with Marcus height at 6’, I think he’s taller than Mike, so what then? Point is, neither of the Vick Gang can play NFL quayerback, be a role model to young kids, and carry themselves as a team player more interested in winning than their own personal accomplishments. The kind of things that a Vince Young exemplifies. Play ur race card on that MV jockhuggers. Let me clear this up while I’m here, I, like a lot of others that read these blogs, was a Falcon fan when a lot of you MV supporters were cr%*ping yellow in ur diapers. You just jumped on the wagon when MV was drafted or maybe ur a long time wagoneer from all the way back to the Super Bowl year. DON’T TELL ME THAT I’M NO FALCON FAN IF I DON’T THINK MV IS A QUATERBACK. Bet most of you were Dallas Cowboy fans before you jumped this wagon, huh?

Sports are merely a microcosm of society. With name recognition, situations tend to get magnified. As a parent, and observer,I think you can only pray for these kids.Sure, you do all you can do,but Once they think they have it all figured out, there is simply nothing you can say,or do to correct their behavior. If you have kids, you know what I’m talking about,if you don’t yet,but plan to,”WATCH OUT!!!”Every time something happens, society is too quick to hold up the cross, while hiding the pitch fork.

Congrats to Bruce Sutter but in my opinion how can you have a Sutter in the hall without a Goose and Lee Smith. Oh well I guess only the smart ones have a vote. And on the Sorry excuse for a human being Vick person that thinks he is above everyone. Do you really think anyone is going to pick this fool up when NFL teams are barely considering sign Terrell Owens who actually has talent with all the similar crap that comes along with it. I think not. Well maybe he will be able to play during recess in prison and still he will not dominate.

redandblack, you are a complete and utter idiot.
Cornrows and what have you do not make a person a gangster or bad.
What has Michael Vick done to give you any right to say these things about him, or you the other idiot poster?
Michael Vick leads the Falcons in winning percentage and is number 3 active in the league. He’s a winner, and to keep on blaming him for this team’s shortcommings shows your complete lack of intelligence and football knowledge.
With every word, y’all continue to prove yourself to be fools.
So shut the f—k up.
God, there is nothing worse in this world than ignorance. And redandblack is ignorant, as is the other anynomous poster before him. Stupid people can’t help but be stupid. They’re born that way. Ignorance is a choice. It is learned. You can choose to be better, to not be ignorant.
How about this, you bunch of ignorant rednecks: stop posting anynomous blogs.
Put your name where your mouth is, as I do every day.
Put your name where your ignorance is.
But you won’t, because like all of those who are ignorant, you’re also a bunch of cowards.
So stay cowardly, redandblack. Stay ignorant. Stay a fool.
With every word you say, behind your cowardly anynomous blogger name, you prove yourself to be all of those things.

As Jeff said, Marcus Vick is his own man. He has his own life and career hundreds of miles away from Michael. If Marcus screws up, it’s not Mike’s fault. How many families have brothers who are opposite? One does good, one does bad. It’s not the good brother’s fault that the bad one is bad.

“Gangbanger clothes” Redandblack? What is that exactly? I’m sure you know because you strike me as the kind of person who would have a very familiar perspective with gang life and their choice of clothing. I’m sure that on a daily bases you are constantly immersed in the gang environment, Not just getting all your info from repeats of “Law & Order”. Honestly do you know any “gangbangers”? I would hate for your comments to be convoluted as some backwards ss comment against the Hip Hop culture or black males in general, but I’m sure your smarter than that. Also why is it that when a Black male “rolls up in his escalade” and exits with guest they are referred to as his posse, but the group of white guys hoping out the Land rover in the parking space next to him are just a group of friends, hmmmm Matthew? I’m just thankful that you didn’t get this info second handed and saw it with your own eyes, whew! And you wonder why some people walk around with a chip on their shoulders. What you need to do is thank god that no one generalizes you* on the color of you skin, because let me tell you its no picnic.

To the Vick haters - how do we know what goes on behind the scenes between Marcus and Mike? All we know is what the media has access to. For all we know Mike could’ve called up Marcus, reamed him a new one for his actions and embarrassment to the family name, and threatened to disown him unless he does a complete 180. We don’t have access to every part of the relationship between Mike and Marcus. Why should we? So stop trying to say Mike should’ve done “better” with Marcus when we don’t know what he’s done at all.

Marcus Vick is no different from any other kid who comes from a family with money. In this case its not his parents with the money, it’s his brother. At times these type of young people can act childish and out of control, it happens all the time when money is present. Once again, you guys are jealous of Mike Vick so you want to take it out on his brother. The same way most of you are jealous of Terence Moore. America does not want to see young black males making good money.. So at the first sign of trouble you want to lock them up and send them to jail. And, you always want to convict before the trial….

First of all, Matthew, I agree with you 100%. I understand that this is a blog and people voice their opinions on various subjects; however what I am really curious about is why people are comparing MV’s play to Marcus’ trouble. I really don’t see how the two co-exist. People want to blame MV for his success and spreading to his family and think that is Marcus’ problem. LOL I don’t see MV’s mother or father getting into trouble because he bought them a house or new car. Wake up people, this has nothing to do with MV, it is entirely on Marcus’ shoulders.
Secondly, The only way MV is in any way responsible for the way Marcus handles himself is that MV has made a name for himself in the NFL and Marcus seems to think that because he is the little brother of MV, that he can do, act, and possibly get away with these things. I don’t think MV giving Marcus an Escalade has anything to do with Marcus’ behavior. Marcus seems to think the way through life is through Nepotism. Marcus is a grown man and responsible for his own actions.
Now, Here’s what I don’t understand. I have heard many talk shows and read many articles and everyone keeps bringing up Jim Rice’s name as the person they voted for induction to the HOF. If so many people voted for him then how in the world did he not make it. Jeff, you are correct in the fact that there is zero sensibility to the thought process of the voters. How CAN they say that this person or that person is deserving, but not this year? That really does not pass the common sense test. Personally, I don’t think Sutter should have been voted in based on his numbers compared to others that played the same position. The bar has been set high by closers and the HOF lowered it by voting Sutter in. I am questioning Sutter’s character, I just don’t feel that his numbers are HOF caliber.

Marcus Vick keeps this up he will have a serious criminal record and wont be able to cross the border to play in the C F L. Seriously, his size makes him to small for the NFL (other than a training camp look see because his brothers a star.) But he would fit in nicely in the Canadian league. He would have a tough time surviving though. The salary cap for a C F L TEAM is a bit over 2.3 million(U.S).

Which actions?
Oh, you mean the unfounded accusations by some woman that Vick gave her herpies?
Hmmm. Sounds a bit like Kobe’s situation to me, and we all know what happened with that, don’t we?
Marcus Vick has a history of semi-criminal antics.
Michael Vick has never, never put one wrong foot forward in his life, and has one accusation against him, which in all likelihood, is just as false as that tramp’s in Colorado was against Kobe.
So, once again, anonymous blogger, you’ve proven yourself to be completely ignorant and cowardly. Why don’t you put your name where your libel is?

I disagree with those who think Little Vick won’t get drafted. The NFL tolerates fights during warmups, players who spit, coaches who throw tantrums, and Randy Moss. No doubt that several teams are waiting to grab T.O. Owners are too greedy and stupid to see that people like Vick hurt the sport, and in the long run, hurt the team they play for. The only thing that will keep Marcus off the football field is a long prison sentence, and Michael’s money may well keep that from happening.

Anyone who thinks Michael Vick is to blame for any of Marcus Vick’s actions is a moron. I don’t buy the warped reason that just because Michael did something nice for his brother that it turned his brother into a jerk.
Sure Michael likes to have unprotected intercourse and give genital herpes to women which whom he is involved with, but that is his business. At least the chick he infected was of legal age. In every other aspect of his life he has set a wonderful example for all kids not just Marcus.
If anyone is to blame it is momma Vick. She probably “babied” little Marcus too much which turned him into a little brat. The younger one usually gets away with more because they are the “baby”.
Marcus also seems to like to embellish the “gangsta” culture which seems to be glorified in certain styles of music. He has sex with under age girls, smokes “chronic”, and threatens to pop caps into the posterior of McDonalds’ patrons. While a mature person can enjoy that type of music and realize it for the art it is, immature spoiled brats like Marcus seems to take it literally.
I hope Marcus likes the show “Entorage”, because I have a feeling his future will consist of being one of Michael’s flunkies.

i was reading the article in which the falcons came out in support of michael vick in dealing with the problems of his brother,to be honest who gives a bleep about both vicks.ones a THUG and the other is an enabler in supporting this recognizable mentality constantly displayed by marcus vick. an older brother does not support this type of behavior seen by a younger brother.instead of michael vick advising his brother of his distructable ways and the harm it causes him and others, instead he buys this fool expensive play toys and pays lawyer expenses to get him out of trouble.i have no sympathy for either vick and here’s the middle right finger to you both.a thug is just the same as a crack head both graviate to the seedy side of life.regardless how much money one has it cannot take away inborn patterns,it can only mask them for a short while.to both you VICKS kiss my a** and go to hell on top of it.

Wow… some coward has Googled me.
What am I to do?
I think I’ll laugh, and pity the ignorant coward who remains anonymous (that good for you?), but wants to spend his time trying to “out” me in some way.
Wow… I served in the Marine Corps.
I like to read and I like to watch movies. I like the art of Alex Ross, and I enjoy war movies. You’ve done this before.
Man… keep on digging, Coward… let me know if you find anything interesting.
What a pathetic life you must lead, that you’d actually spend time doing this.
To bad Jay and Silent Bob aren’t lurking around the corner to hold you accountable for your no account life.
Oh well.
