Who is Georgia Sports Person of the Year?

AJC

Andruw Jones did his best Hammerin’ Hank at Turner Field.

D.J. Shockley drove Georgia to its second SEC championship of the decade.

And Jeff Francoeur … well … what else is there left to say?

Which Georgia sports personality do you think had the most significant impact in 2005? Was it Marietta tennis star Robby Ginepri, who made Andre Agassi sweat at the U.S. Open? Michael Vick, who had the Falcons a win away from the Super Bowl? How about Hawks GM Billy Knight for giving ex-owner Steve Belkin the cold shoulder in a Boston court room?

Let us know by nominating your favorite athlete, coach or executive here. We’ll name our Georgia Sports Person of the Year on Jan. 2.

Without a doubt, DJ Shockley..Finally getting his chance to shine..Waiting in the wings behind David Greene and then taking Georgia to victory in the SEC Championship and perhaps an almost guaranteed victory in the Sugar Bowl..

Andruw Jones without a doubt. No Braves player had ever hit 50 home runs in a season. Not Hank Aaron. Not Dale Murphy. Not Eddie Mathews. He stepped up when we lost so many players. The experts said “the run” was over. but with Andruw having a career year, we did it again. Unlike most power hitters, he is considered the best defensive player at his position. Andruw!!

Are you kidding me? This should not be a contest. It has to be Jeff Francouer. Never in my life have I seen a city, much less an entire state get so excited to see one athlete play. The excitement that he put us through this year compares to the year Michael Vick first took over the starting job for the Falcons. He rejuvinated an Atlanta Braves team that we all were nervous about when he got called up. He got the fans back into Turner Field, and the excitement of the Braves was back. Bobby Cox once again did an outstanding job as the skipper for the Braves, but I didn’t see anyone dressing up like a hotdog in support of Bobby. Bobby will always be an icon in this state, but Francouer lived up to all the hype and then some. All of the rookies this year helped us win another division title, but Frenchy excited the club and the fans. Francouer is by far the Sportsman of the Year.

D.J. Shockley, along with the rest of the UGA football program, is extremely overrated. If anybody deserves “Georgia’s Sports Star of the Year Award,” it should unanimously go to andruw jones, and anybody that disagrees knows nothing about sports.

D.J. Shockley, along with the rest of the UGA football program, is highly overrated. Strength of schedule had a lot to do with UGA’s record this season. If anybody deserves “Georgia’s Sports Star of the Year Award,” it would unanimously be Andruw Jones. Anyone who believes D.J. Shockley was a better all-around sports contributor this year knows nothing about sports.

Mark Richt. Coach Richt has done an amazing job at UGA since arriving. He has rebuilt the Georgia football program the right way. This year was just another example of the fruits of his labor.

DJ Shockley, easily. From pre-season #3 in the East to Champs not to mention being the most valuable player to his team in the SEC. If not for the knee injury, who knows how far they could have done.

Anybody who says stuff like “you don’t know anything about sports if you pick DJ” don’t know anything about sports.

Definitely DJ Shockley. His patience, integrity, and skill helped lead the “rebuiling year” Dawgs to the SEC Championship and the Sugar Bowl. He definitely deserves this honor.

It’s got to be Shockley. I do like the “UGA is overrated argument”. By the way, their last win was over the #3 team in the country. The computer polls rank UGA higher in the polls than the humans (meaning that their SOS is high, duh).

Shockley was the class of the SEC this year on a UGA team that was 5 points away from being undefeated (and not playing in Pasadena…lol).

“UGA Overrated” sounds like a bitter Tech fan in disguise. What, you’re not old enough to remember the last time your team beat Georgia?

Obviously, the Georgia Sports Person of the Year should be DJ Shockley. Andruw and Francoeur were fun to watch, but they had neither the story nor the RESULTS Shockley had.

No doubt Shockley had a great year. But Don’t forget that A. Jones had probably the best year of any player in baseball last year (won two thirds of the Triple Crown and another Gold Glove) and cot “politicked” out of the MVP award. Just cant seem to shake off what Shock did for my dawgs this year though. Call it a draw?

Shockley - the best player on the most successful and beloved team in the state. He is not only a great player, but he has all the personal attributes of a great individual. He is the very embodiment of the word “student-athlete.”

You ought to consider John Smoltz, who defied expectations and had a great year in returning to the starting rotation.

But its tough to choose between Andruw Jones and Shockley. Both are deserving.

Yes we have all forgotten about Calvin Johnson. So that leaves DJ, who unlike CJ, is on a WINNING team (Tech fans, that means when your team scores more points than your opponents more often than not) DJ deserves more of a career type award for his patience, loyalty to this great state and its pride program, and his leadership on and off the field. I love Francoer, Cox, Andruw, and Smoltzie, but DJ’s the man in ‘05.

You people kill me!! D.J. Shockley? Athlete of the year? Please take your red and black blinders off and look at what Andruw did for the Braves. Shockley was an adequate quarterback on a team that won with defense against a weak schedule. Andruw CARRIED a major league baseball team to a 14th straight division title. Nice try, but this is no contest!

A.Jones. No one else is close. Carried the team the way C.Jones did in 1999. J.Smoltz, for the way he helps those with less, deserves some votes. B.Cox. Who else could have won with that roster? If not for A.Jones, he gets the nod.

By shockley's fluffer

December 19, 2005 09:18 PM | Link to this

It is a landslide so far SHOCKLEY is the man. I love all the praise the Dawgs are giving to the Braves. Why is their so much anger coming from the Brave supporters. Georgia is playing in a BCS Bowl. They are ranked #7 in the nation by the BCS and #8 by people who get paid millions of dollars a year. Do you really think what you say matters. Anyone saying they are over ranked is obviously thinks to highly of their own opinion or are from Tech. Preseason ranked 3rd in the SEC EAST to #7 in the nation, with a untested QB. 21 passing TD and 4 rushing 10-2 soon to be 11-2.

By D-O-T

December 19, 2005 09:31 PM | Link to this

Agree with “shockley’s fluffer” 100%. It is obvious that all these “Brave fans” are frustrated Tech fans that are upset because they are not playing in the BLUE turf bowl game in Boise this year. Seems to be the recent trend. You dont see the loyalty Shockley has displayed in athletics these days. He waited and he DELIVERED ! SEC Champs when the Dawgs were picked to finish THIRD in the SEC East. Congratulations DJ, looks like you will win this poll hands down, despite the periodic “Brave” or Calvin Johnson nomination.

let me see ,we won the state more times than we lost it ,and trust me loosing a hard fought battle hurts more than getting your a* handed to you by the other opponent; especially when it on your own field and in front of your own fans. The only other time I can remember that much hot air escaping known space was the crash of the Hindenburg blimp. Anyway that almost a month ago, it was warmer and there were no visions of SUGAR PLUM FARIES dancing in the minds of the bee- nation. BUZZ has to be a girl or a ————.Atlanta been very ,very good to us DAWG fans,I just wish the BEE-nation would learn to be quiet.Lastly ,if you hummers start winning more games instead talking smack ya’ll might get to spend Christmas in Dixie. I think in all of our UGA glory and the joy of 14 straight division titles for the Braves, we have forgotten someone - Atlanta Hawks center, Jason Collier. If anyone deserves to be Georgia’s Sportsman of the year, it would certainly be him. He left behind a wife, a daughter and a promising career.

By t-towndawg

It has to be Jeff Francoeur without a doubt. I have never seen people so excited about any Braves player(s) since our first World Series appearance. Don’t count out Warrick Dunn either, with his humanitarian effort off the field and true heart on the field (maybe Duckett should take note).

By Eric

Hey you Dawgs fans, take off the red glasses. Andruw had the best year of any athlete in this state…and he doesn’t need to be from here to be considered the best sports person. He almost carried the Braves by himself for half of the season. I would even give it to Warrick before Shockley. Dunn is also deseving of this award.

And before anyone tries to make assumtions…I’m no GT fan either.

I don’t think Shockley took Georgia to the Championship. Georgia played in a week East coast side of the SEC. LSU wasn’t that great this year. They nearly lost to South Carolina.

Jeff Francoeur is the player of the year for Georgia. When he came to bat everybody was on their Feet cheering for him.

By henry

A 5 WAY TIE ANY WAY YOU SLICE IT:

Bobby Cox for once again crafting a winning team from an odd cast of rookies, veterans and rental players.

Jeff Francoeur for bringing excitement back to Braves baseball.

Andrew for carrying the team on his back for a month and still hitting 50 HR’s.

Shock for exceeding expectations and leading the team while displaying exceptional character and humility.

Warrick Dunn for making a statement with his performance on the field in addition to what we have grown to know and love about his selfless acts off the field.

By Brandon

SHOCK! He embodies the sports ideal of being a team player in the world of selfish athletes.

B. Knight ARE YOU CRAZY!!!! He’s an idiot and so are those other owners for what they paid and gave for Joe - Phoenix would have let him go for less. Plus, I’m still screaming why didn’t they get Chris Paul who is running away w/rookie of the year and may even make the All-Star team. The Hawks biggest need other than an unavailable big man was a true point guard. The best point guard in 10 years comes into the league and the Hawks pass on him and give away two lottery picks for a a player who is not even an All Star. Billy Knight is a jerk and a very bad GM!!!!

By Brandon

December 19, 2005 11:23 PM | Link to this

SHOCK! Hands down he exemplies character, success, leadership, team play, unselfishness, and execellence - many of which are lacking and devalued in today’s society.

B. Knight is a jerk and a terrible GM. Two lottery picks and $70M for an above average player. Picking Marvin ahead of the best PG to come along since Jason Kidd (Chris Paul - runaway rookie of the year). Running out of town the guy who knew more about basketball than he does. Hiring a defensive-minded, good coach and then drafting players who only want to score and run - usurping the coach. ARE YOU CRAZY!!!!!

Andruw Jones. He’s the first Brave to hit over 50 homeruns in a season and the Braves have been around for 134 years. That’s insane. Hank Aaron, Eddie Mathews, Dale Murphy, Chipper Jones, the Big Cat, none of them ever hit 50 but Andruw did and he did it when the Braves needed him the most.

Jeff Francour?

Are you franc-ing serious? Yeah, great September and October, Jeff! Way to disappear!

You Bugs amaze me. Overrating this guy just because you’re sour that Shockley owns your a—es!

Who is the most valuable to his team?

Francour disappeared when needed most.

Booby Cox was busy picking boogers instead of managing his team in October, leading to another embarrassing exit.

A. Jones also disappeared in September and October, when his team needed him.

Kovy I can see, but the boy still plays no defense (neither did Gretzky, that’s why Lemiuex is the greatest all-around player ever).

That leaves us with Shockley. Loyal. Valuable (an injury to him derailed what would have been an undefeated season). And clutch. That last thing is what Jeff, Booby, and Andruw all lack. None of them are clutch when their team needs them to step it up (especially Booby). Shock is nothing but clutch. Not choke, like Reggie Ball. Clutch. It’s something you Braves and Bugs fans would know nothing about: a player who comes through in the clutch, in a meaningful game.

D.J. Shockley is the undisputed winner of this “award.”

Nothing finer can be said about this man, my second favorite Dawg after David Pollack, than that he is “A Damn Fine Dawg!”

By Clint

December 20, 2005 12:48 AM | Link to this

Sure Andruw led the Braves to another division title. Big deal, they lost in the playoffs. D.J. Shockley not only won his division the SEC East but also his conference. That is something no Brave has done in a while. Plus the fact that D.J. is an outstanding community guy and good student. It’s no contest.

Andruw Jones had a huge year, and single handedly kept the braves afloat for about 2 months during the season. Up there with Andrew would be DJ Shockley and Warrick Dunn…but my personal favorite pick would be to give it to Lowndes High School Football team. I’m not from Lowndes and I don’t know anyone from there (no bias). However, winning 2 state championships in a row in the highest classification truly is an accomplishment.

DJ Shockley, hands down. In an age in which most athletes are spoiled babies, threatening to transfer if they don’t get to start, DJ exemplified dedication and character by honoring his commitment to the school he signed with. He waited his turn fro four years, and carried the Dawgs to the SEC title in his only season as a starter. In addition, he is a role model in the community, and a good student (3.55 GPA) who will graduate after this semester. And he did all of this without a dime of pay. It’s easy to be charitable when you are paid millions a year.

For character, achievement and sportsmanship, DJ Shockley wins in a walk.

Someone said that DJ did what everyone expected him to do and that Jeff and AJ did the unexpected? Well I don’t know about “everyone” else but I never expected DJ (a one year starter) to come out and rise to the occasion week after week and lead his team (pre-season picked to finish 3rd in the SEC) to a SEC title. I did however expect AJ to bat around .260 and fold under the pressure of October baseball along with the rest of the Braves!

D.J. hands down. I love the braves, but if bobby, frenchie, and andruw were all that good, we wouldn’t be talking about division titles right now, but instead being world champs. Instead, D.J. Shockley desrves it. By waiting, he pushed the Dawgs all the way to an SEC championship i won’t soon forget, another win over the bugs(Dawgs own the Jackets, i mean OWN them),and another chance to win a BCS game. You really can’t argue with that. If it was best sports figure in the past 20 years, i’d definitley say BOBBY COX, but this is in the past year, and D.J. showed true devotion to the Dawgs and the game, not to mention incredible leadership. what is this about UGA being overrated? I definitley agree our schedule was weak, but only in the beginning. I’m assuming i’m talking to a Tech fan that knows nothing about college football, but Tech wouldn’t have a chance against Auburn again and all bug fans know it. UGA played the most complete game in a long time to beat LSU, who was numero 3 at the time. I admit the loss, again, to florida was weak, but look at who wasn’t there. The incredible D.J. Shockley. QBs and RBs always get credit, when the credit should go to the lineman. Andrew & Fookie were consistently the only everyday playing vets in the lineup and they still won in arguably the toughest division. By the way, why do UGA fans always bash people who don’t agree with them. I am a UGA fan, but some of you people need to get lives and stop getting offended when someone doesn’t agree with you. Some of you sound like mini Deans and Kerrys

Nothing against the Braves, but how can anyone from that team be nominated when they can’t even make it passed the first round of the playoffs. The last time they were anywhere near the World Series was… when? D.J Shockley is the man. A native Georgian playing for THE University of Georgia. In the dictionary next to the word “loyal”, you’ll find D.J’s picture. GO DAWGS!!!

Not taking anything away from TJ Shockley but what he has done is average at best. Georgia is not a BCS team and most outside the state don’t see them as a national power.

It’s Francoeur, the only one of the bunch mention that made the cover of Sports Illustrated.

For those of you that think Marvin Williams is a bust, you know nothing about basketball. I agree Billy Knight is a terrible GM but Williams will be a great NBA player, he’s only 19, give him a chance. Chris Paul is a great PG and he’s having a great year but give Williams a chance.

How about all of them.

Shockley - for showing us that young peole still have character.

Richt - for taking a stone and turning it into a gem.

Francy - for the excitement of youth

Andruw - For finally stepping up to the plate

Bobby - Same as Richt

CJ - For giving it his all in a tough situation

Smoltz - For all of us midlifers and for still believing that in himself.

Dunn - For demonstrating that he has never forgotten where he came from

Most of all everyone have a Blessed Christmas and successful new year!

You all want to proclaim Shockly as the Georgia Player of the Year, but you don’t want to look at the rest of the Georgia Dawgs. Yes, Shockly waited behind Greene. Yes, Shockly has an SEC title to his name. Yes, Shockly was the MVP of the Dawgs, but what about that defense?! Everyone wants to forget that defense wins games! That defense lost a great deal of starters to the NFL draft: Pollack, Thurman, and many more, yet they still are a formindable force. That defense has improved greatly over last year, just look at the increase in interceptions! Now, I vote that the Georgia DEFENSE be the Georgia “Player” of the year.

Shockley? Is this the same man who lead Ga to all of 70 yards of offense and 3 first downs in the second half against Tech? A man who is not even a 3rd team All-American? He is better than the real NL MVP? What a load of nonsense! Calvin Johnson and Greg Blue were All-Americans and were more pivotal that Shockley since Ga won again with defense and not with offense.

DJ Shockley, first for displaying his athletic ability when his and his teams back was against the wall. Second and more importantly, he showed true character by sticking with his committment to UGA when most gifted atheletes today would have given up on his committment and his team mates for immediate success elsewhere. THANK YOU DJ for showing us that character and committment can still part of the great sport of college football!

DJ Schockley, just for winning an SEC championship?? He was out for UGAs most important game of the year, yet another whooping/exposure by the lowly Florida Gators. Put down the bong and funnel, clueless UGA frat boys, and open your eyes.

Andruw Jones, without a doubt, deserves this award. Yes, the Braves floundered again in the playoffs, but were it not for Andruw’s astonishing year, they wouldn’t have even been in the postseason. And Bobby Cox as honorable mention, and then Warrick Dunn. Shcokley and Calvin Johnson are down on the list together somewhere.

Dawg fans are still salivating over H. Walker who’s closer to social security than college; so they will always say Shockley, who wasn’t in top 3 in SEC. Vick needs a new number because NFL defense has got his. When the Hawk’s best story is about the owners, they’re out. Andruw Jones had a breakout year, but likely due to the Gold Club closing. Francoeur put life in the Braves and ‘butts in chairs’ at the Ted. There’s no denying Atlanta fans from all sports were rooting for Frenchy. Move over Chipper..there’s a new sheriff in town.

To me, it’s all about pressure. In other words…who had to perform under the MOST pressure? Without a doubt, it was DJ. There was more pressure on that young man when his season started than any athlete in Georgia, in any sport…amateur or professional. Jeff Francour has many more seasons to shine…same for Vick, Cox, Richt, etc. Shockley had one season and one season only to get it done, under incredible scrutiny…and he did it! Congratulations DJ…you’re my athlete of the year!!

By JamesD

James why to pick one game and one Half to prove how bad Shockley is. The UGA D that Blue was on gave up over 506 total yards to Aurburn where was Blue then. Arkansaw had a freshman run 212 yards on GA D where was Blue then. You have to look at the whole season not one half of one game. Shockley is leader and he took a group of no star athletes and won the hardest conference in college football. Even though it was a down year their is no team in the country who could of survied the SEC without a loss.

here are some more to think about:

Deion Branch (Albany), New England Patriots – SUPER BOWL MVP

Ronnie Brown (Cartersville), Miami Dolphins – No. 2 pick in the NFL draft, top candidate for rookie of the year [Note: 5 Georgians were picked in the top 17 of NFL Draft – Brown, PacMan Jones, Carlos Rogers, Thomas Davis and David Pollack]

Doug Lipscomb (Marietta), Wheeler basketball coach – AAAAA title, 31-1 overall, undefeated in Georgia and ranked nationally by USA Today

Randy McPherson (Valdosta), Lowndes football coach – AAAAA title (repeat), undefeated and ranked nationally by USA Today and Sports Illustrated

more as i think of them…

First off the argument is Between Andrew and D.J. a vote for anyone else is rediculouse. I love JF too but he played half a year. DJ wins for several reasons: A) DJ led GA to 2nd SECC championship in 25 yrs when picked to finish 3rd in the east! B) Andrew led Braves to same old year (a first round exit) C) DJ’s loyalty to his team. (In an age when atheletes want nothing but more $) He put his NFL career at risk for 1 year of eligibility!

I understand a vote for Andrew, you simply don’t like the Dawgs or don’t follow CFball. However, to insult someone who votes for Shock shows your ignorance on the subject of what we should be rewarding when considering sportsman of the year. I award winners who are committed to being a team player & GA’s best (not only) example is DJ Shockley.

Then, he couldn’t get out of here fast enough. He didn’t do a lick of his community service in Georgia. He asked for a trade to a team that is the favorite to win the Stanley Cup championship while OUR Atlanta Thrashers still struggle through growing pains.

I’ll give Vick, Shockley, Francouer and the entire Georgia Gym Dogs their due. They are all great. But, this year, in my opinion goes to Forrest Griffin. Some may say “WHO”? But, there is a young man in Georgia that is becoming one of the best known MMA fighters in the world!

This past year, Forrest Griffin was chosen to be a contestant on the hit reality show “The Ultimate Fighter”. Each week there was a fight and someone stayed and the loser went home. The winner would receive a contract with THE ULTIMATE FIGHTING CHAMPIONSHIP. Forrest finally won, in what is being called the greatest fight in UFC history in the final fight for the Light Heavyweight contract.

Since then , Forrest has won two more fights in the UFC and is being called the most exciting fighter in the world. He has appeared on Fox & Friends and been featured in several magazines such as Men’s Fitness. In one year, Forrest has gone from Police (Augusta,Ga.) to being one the biggest names in Mixed Martial Arts; the world over. There is no bigger rags to riches story than the Forrest Griffin story; this year. He fights with a smile instead of a growl and he has represented Georgia well…Tha’s just my two cents worth

On the sports page of this website, we were told to nominate the most influential athlete from Georgia. I see the names of several great athletes above — DJ, Frenchy, Andruw, Vick and so on. No one can question their athleticism. But how about nominating someone who has had an inflence that extends well beyond the field of play (though his influence there was tremendous). How about nominating someone who we’d want our children to emulate. How about John Smoltz? Baseball’s Roberto Clemente award winner for his charitable efforts (the John and Dyan Smoltz Foundation, Kings Ridge Christian School, Atlanta Braves Baseball Academy, Atlanta Community Food Bank, and I’d guess several other behind-the-scenes contributions) was also an enormous part of the Braves this year (his 14 wins should’ve been closer to 17 if he’d gotten run support early in the season; he posted a 3.06 ERA). If this award goes to anyone else, Smoltz will be robbed.

Although Mark Richt is the easy choice for bringing UGA to its third SEC Championship game and having one of the top 5 winningest programs since he became coach.

But I’d have to go with Greg Ward. He did run a mile without stopping. Without Stopping, People!!!!

December 20, 2005 11:01 AM | Link to this

Greg Ward played football at Headland High School in East Point from 1965-1968, then went on to play cornerback at University of North Carolina (Chapel Hill) from 1968-1972. I’m not sure he could run a mile now.

Still, as classy and as great an athlete as Warrick Dunn is, this year belongs to DJ Shockley who came through and produced almost 100% when it counted and when lots of Dawgs fans (including, shamefully, me) thought he would fall on his face.

Shockley earned every bit of this accolade.

The Francour argument is a joke, if your voting for a brave 1 andrew 2 smoltz 3 cox. Also, the top of this page says nominate your favorite not “name the most influential” Factors to vote on: Leader of a Winning Team= UGA football (sec), Braves (13 division titles), UGA gymnastics (national champs), Falcons (1 game from SB) Popularity of the Sport= College Football, Pro Football, and Baseball are the only competitors Character of the Athelete= Dunn and Shockley are the obviouse top 2 Importance to his team= Without Vick, Andrew, or Shockley these teams never reach the accomplishments achieved in ‘05 Using these criteria we arrive at a clear cut winner whose name continues to surface DJ Shockley

The only real choice for Georgia Sports Person of the Year is John Smoltz. What this man has accomplished on the field has been tremendous but it pales in comparison to what he has contributed OFF the field. Andruw, Bobby, Shockley, Francouer and all the others are worthy of such an award. John has made Georgia his adopted home for years and has been an outstanding example for all sports celebrities. Remember, this award is for Georgia Sports PERSON of the Year.

Jeff Francouer, no doubt, lit a fire in the Braves clubhouse that hasn’t been there in many years. As a local prospect, he brought out the fans and even on the road trip, the young fans wanted to see the young Phenom, with the big bat and bigger smile. His year, for sure. Thanks for listening.

My first comment is to the Author’s of all the negative comments made thus far, I believe the question is “Who do you think is the most influential sports person?” I did not read where it said this was an open forum to bash people! I guess you have never heard the statement if you do not have anything good to say keep your mouth shut! These players and coaches every time they step out on the field try to give you and myself there very best and I appreciate this and hats off to all of you. But, I believe Michael Vick and the entire Falcon team and staff would get my vote, especially Michael Vick, he plays hurt, he plays with a postive attitude and he plays to win. The Falcons give it their all and even though the they come up short sometimes, it’s not from lack of effort. And to my all time favorite Falcon (Steve Bartkowski) best wishes to your family and yourself.

Christy, although I agree that Mr. Dunn does alot of great things for his community, DJ does a hole lot more than play football and get good grades and last I checked DJ does not make near the money that Warrick makes. Shockley has participated in numerous community service programs including Project REACH, which is recreation and educational activities for children with handicaps, Habitat for Humanity, Special Olympics, and has assisted in raising funds for and distribution of Thanksgiving meals for needy family in the Athens area. He has also assisted with H.E.R.O., a volunteer program which assists children with AIDS. Shockley is a member of the UGA Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and is a student-athlete representative on the UGA Athletic Association Board of Directors. Gimme a break

Now I love my husband Michael Vick, but this year he just hasn’t done his job. I understand he has had injuries but sometimes you got to push through them to get a win. Now when you ask “Who is Georgia Sports Person of the Year?” You can’t just simply give it to one person when it comes to those Georgia Dawgs. The who team including the staff. Shockley has sone his thing this year but if he didn’t have receivers to throw to or great people blocking for him them Shockley’s name would not be in everyone’s home. So who is Georgia Sports Person of the year, there is just one there is a whole team!

Georgia has lots of great sports figures. One kid that has not been mentioned on here and who deserves a shout out is Donald Young, a young black tennis player who made it to number one in the world in junior tennis, and he did so as the youngest male player ever to do so. He is from Atlanta. I’m sot saying he is the best Georgia has to offer, but he on the list. Merry Christmas everyone.

December 20, 2005 12:39 PM | Link to this

DJ had a good season and yes, his team won a championship. A championship on the same level as the Braves! He did not win it all - just like the Braves. He did not have overwhelming stats, did not carry his team week to week, and despite your best efforts to prove otherwise, has not done a great deal of community service. When would he have time for that with school and football?

Andruw Jones and John Smoltz are the two that stand out as having performed at their very best in 2005. They did win a championship (although not the one we wanted) and they both carried their teams through injuries and slumps. Without Andruw we don’t win the East and probably not even the wildcard. And Smoltz overcame a horrid start to hold us up every five days.

The only folks with blinders on here are UGA fans. Yes, UGA overcame a “rebuilding” year, but that was supposed to be on the defensive side of the ball. With all those starters drafted, your defense was outstanding and without that, you would not be playing three straight games in the big city. The offense was all set with the same line that protected Greene, the same backs that handled the load in ‘04 (plus Lumpkin), and many of the same receivers (primarily Pope). It was your defense that rebuilt and damn well, I might add.

December 20, 2005 01:30 PM | Link to this

SHOCKLEY wins hands down. The award is for Sports person of the year, not most influential, not most humanitarian, not most popular. The award is for a combination of characteristics that should add up to the best overall sports person (see Micheal Jordan), and DJ exemplifies the qualities of an athelete who is committed 100% to his team, a giving person off the field, and a winner. UGA’s football team won the SEC the toughest and most highly acclaimed achievement of any sports team in the state this year (in major sports). DJ is the MVP and leader of that team. Without him we lose 2-3 more games. Other athletes have an argument but none compare to SHOCK

THIS IS A VERY WELL CONSTRUCTED QUESTION/POLL. The thing that strikes me the MOST is how much knowledge fans have about the state of Georgia atheletes, coaches, etc. Most will probably go with their favorite sports interests. ie Shockley for football…Andruw for baseball & so on. The discussion/arguments for each nominee all have so much merit Ive come to realize it is tough to shun any of our mentioned persons not to be the best. Id just like to say how important I think sports figures are to ourselves and the GREAT examples set by them all for our young people to use as role models. (Now, being a football fan first,Shockley & crew winning the SEC gave me the most personal enjoyment)

Sorry for the Bloggers who are only UGA minded. I am a huge UGA fan but clearly you are allowing your love for UGA to stand in the way of what should be measured for sportsman of the year.

Granted, Shock has been a great asset at UGA but i strongly disagree with the rationale that SPORTS person of the year is just for the atheletic contributions made. If that were true then maybe TO should have had it for his heroics in the Super Bowl and last season for the Eagles. After all he does live in Atl.

No, the award would and should go to Warrick Dunn who is exemplory on the field as well as off. His charity work, spiritual nature and leadership more than speak for themselves.

On the atheletic side, a 1500 yard rushing season behind that weak offensive line requires superior effort for such an undersized back. His huge heart carries and guides him on the field as well as off.

Ok, UGA would have lost 2-3 more games without Shock BUT the Falcons probably would not have won the four games this season without Dunn’s efforts. Then all the Falcon fans might be wondering if Reggie Bush was in their future instead of attacking Vick all the time.

Dunn’s contributions far exceed football and will continue to do so long after his football career is over.

Accolades to Shock for his one great season, but congrats to Dunn…GA Sportsman of the year.

Dunn is a great guy and a great player, I’ll take nothing away from his accomplishments. The problem is unless you haven’t been to a game all year that team belongs to Micheal Vick, who is the best player on the Falcons. Without Vick nothing opens up for Dunn. And so what if we did loose a couple of more games where would we be? Missing the playoffs just like we probably will anyway.

The Frenchy vote is a joke. Jeff did a great job for the Bravos this year, but come on we accomplished nothing more than we have for the last 13 years and his own teammate (andruw) finished second in the MVP voting.

Shockley lead a team to an accomplishment that will be remembered forever. What have the Falcons or Braves done this year that really mattered in the history books to anyone, even their own fans. Plus, Dunn and Frenchy will be here in the future, while DJ had one shot at history and he knocked it out making him the MOST deserving sportsman of the year.

Many are worthy—particularly Warrick Dunn, Andruw Jones and even Jim Mora Jr— but I’m going with DJ Shockley.

Yes I am a UGA grad, and sure, I’m biased, but in a day and age where so many athletes are pre-Madonnas that require immediate gratification whenever a new notion strikes them, DJ embodied patience, character, personal sacrifice and a commitment to his school and his teammates—all too rare qualities, nowadays.

Other guys had to step up and pick up his slack! MVP? PLEASE!!! Yeah 51 homeruns is great but that can’t just win a MVP! People say WOW he really had his break out year we’ve been waiting for!!! HE’S BEEN IN THE LEAGUE FOR 10 YEARS!!!He batted .263!!! Albert Pujols hit almost 70 points higher than him with 10 less homers and 4 less RBIs! It’s a no brainer who the MVP was!!!

NL EAST = 4 other teams and braves have won 13 in a row. Congrats (winning the Penant would have been more comprable)

SEC champs = 11 other teams and The Dawgs have won 1 other since dooley. Strongest conference in football year in and year out. And with a Sugar bowl win we will be the 5-6th ranked team in the nation (hoping we win, not predicting or being arrogant)

Shock didn’t beat florida, correct, proving how valuable he was for the team.

DJ Shockley not only led UGA to the SEC Championship despite missing one of the biggest games of the year, he is an example of what pure sport is all about. He took a back seat to Greene and trained and worked hard and debuted wearing the red and black proudly as a senior. He could have easily started all 4 years at another school but instead worked hard and stayed true to the Dawgs. All fans across the state must have great respect for his humble dedication, althleticism, and love for those Dawgs. DJ Shockley gets my vote, hands down. Plus, the exciting change for the UGA offense - he single-handedly took a pocket quarterback offense to an exciting running system that worked well!

Lets just compare these fine individuals.

Vick: Got a huge contract to go with his huge ego. Production nill.

Francouer: Played 1/2 season and was up for NL Rookie of the year. Big accomplishment.

Jones: 50 homeruns, Gold Glove Not Bad but there should be More.

Cox: 14th consecutive division title. Awesome!

Richt: 2 SEC championships in 5 years. 3 SEC East titles in 5 years. 2 time SEC coach of the Year. Although huge accomplishment not as huge as Cox.

Dunn: Having great Year, but you have to like a guy who does so much for the community and his family.

Ginepri: 16th in the world is not a number 1 eventhough the Agassi match was one of the greatest I have ever seen.

Shock: 10-1 as a starter. 1 year starter. SEC Championship MVP. Obtained 3 Heisman votes. Finalist for the Manning award. Recognized by the NCAA for service in the community. The example of what should be a college athelete. Countless others. I’m sure he would buy a house for someone if he made money.

Narrowed down to Richt, Cox, and Shock. Although we all love Richt in the dawgnation he has not won a national championship. Shock and Cox are, to me, tied. Two unbelieveable stories for two outstanding guys. We will be talking about Francouer next year.

But Shockley just managed to finally live up to expectations…he didn’t patiently “wait” for his chance - he failed in all previous attempts to claim the starting job at UGA. Not just last year against Tech. He was given opportunities in previous seasons to play…but he couldn’t win the job. But, Andruw Jones has been the starting centerfielder on the team that has won so many consecutive division titles, and carried the Braves this year, with 50+ homeruns, National League MVP…Somebody blogged that the Braves didn’t win anything??? UGA’s SEC championship is no comparison to winning the MLB East Division!!!!

Robby Ginepri has by far impressed me more than any other athlete this year despite the lack of recognition. I was at the 2005 US Open and was lucky enough to see him win one of his awesome 5-set matches. He was unfortunately over-shadowed by the activities of Agassi and Blake.

What a come-back he had made in only a couple months time, I have never seen such hard work, dedication, and heart in someone that is also so very charismatic! Keep it up Robby!

Jennifer you mad ethe strongest case for Shock so far. He absolutely could have left GA and started elsewhere but he quietly waited for his chance and when he was given the opportunity he made the most of it.

I would never say that Shock wasn’t the MVP for GA this year …but Dunn is still my pick. However you make a very strong case.

The bravos players have been mentioned but what about Bobby Cox. He pulled rabbits out of his hat this year but the carrots ran out short of the playoffs.

The year is still here and suddenly the Hawks seem to have found the winning touch? If they win out the rest of the year does that count for any one on that team?

Any way this is a great subject… keep up the good work.

We not only lost an athlete who worked so hard to make it in the NBA, but according to all stories written after his death, he was a tremendous person, and for that his legacy should never be forgotten. God Bless Jason and his family, especially his wife and little girl.

SEC championship vs NL east is an opinion you can’t argue one way or the others. IMO SEC is much more difficult simply due to the lack of room for error. Much like the playoffs in baseball, which the braves don’t handle to well.

You say SHOCK just filled out to be what he was supposed to be, I can say the same for OVERDUE andruw, and Shockley performed in the first season that he actually got a chance while it took mr. overdue ten frickin seasons to hit a few homeruns.

I think Jamal Lewis deserves to be Ga. Sportsman of the Year (he is from ATL). Not only did he have to do some time this summer for a crime he committed when he was a kid, but he came back strong this year in the NFL. He’s a wrole moledel to many black youths in ATL.

After reading comments on this subject, I have to think it is Warrick Dunn as Sports Person of the year. He is having a phenonmenal, Pro-Bowl year, and is one of the best overall people in all of sports. Very few people do more for the community than Dunn, much less athletes. He is my nomination, even though I am a huge Braves fan. Andruw Jones had an MVP year, but sports PERSON of the YEAR goes to Dunn.

There is no doubt in my mind that sports person of the year should be Coach Darlington of the Valdosta Wildcats. Not for a win-loss record or not beating the Vikings or not going to the dome ( which is expected of any coach in Wildcat land), but for standing up like the man he is and taking the emotional pressure that comes with coaching the Wildcats. I just don’t think that Bobby Cox and his men, Mark Richt and his men, nor any other sports person in the state of Georgia is under more pressure to produce a winning record than Coach Darlington has been under the last three years. And I’m a Lowndes Co. Viking who prefers honest, God-fearing academic athletes than a state championship any day of the year.

I do a lot of work with young people, and there are so many who need a role model. DJ Shockley bode his time in Greene’s shadow, filled in when called upon, and when given the start, gave 110%. He has earned his degree, and his spot in the hearts of the Bulldog nation for his stellar performance. He is a leader on and off the field, and the kind of person who engenders admiraton and respect from his friends and foes alike. His character is what determined his performance—not a lucrative contract or financial incentive. That is a testament to his parents, teachers and Coach Mark Richt. It’s DJ all the way.

Jeff Francoeur brought a new and interesting type of excitement back to the Braves fans, along with the other Baby Braves. He is a great role model for the young athletes coming up and will be a positive force for the team and Atlanta for many years to come. This is the type of player we have needed for a long time. He is a real spark-plug.

DJ Shockley, without a doubt. He showed a lot of class in the way he handled the situation at quarterback the last few years. In these times when so many athletes think only about themselves, he honored his committment and stayed at Georgia. Not only is he a great athlete, he is a great young man.

By Linda C.

My vote if for Jeff Francoeur. He has provided the Braves fans with a new kind of spirit. It is thrilling to have someone who is a great role model for the young, who is a spark-plug for the team, and plays with enthusiasm and a love for the game and his fans.

Robby Ginepri….went from over 100th in the world of professional tennis to number 16 within the year of 2005. What a accomplishment! Unfortunately, Robby doesn’t get the media exposure, even locally, that the other athletes receive.

By Boy Scout

December 20, 2005 03:48 PM | Link to this

Francoeur is a great guy, but he is a paid athlete. He forewent college for a professional career, and more power to him. But the lesson is that very few student athletes make it to the pro ranks, and even fewer are stars. Reward the average Joe, in this case DJ, who demonstrates ability, leadership, determination, and earns a degree to be functional for life after sports. Give some kid a role model—“be prepared”—for whatever comes your way.

Honestly I would say a tie between DJ & Warrick Dunn. Both are very involved in the community and both proved doubters wrong. Andruw & Bobby are close, but failing to come through when it mattered most is a huge strike against them. Although Francoeur caused excitement for the Braves, which you would have to expect from a hometown kid, he by no way carried the Braves.

D.J. Shockley SEC Champs ! Enough Said!

By Andy Flippen

December 20, 2005 04:16 PM | Link to this

For those that say DJ Shockley and UGA are both overrated due to strength of schedule, all I can say is that if Tech would win more games during the season, our strength of schedule might not be so low. We still beat you year in a year out, and without your negated cheating years, you haven’t beaten us since 1990…pretty pathetic for an in-state rivalry. I try to never knock Tech, but that’s all you do to us. You treat us like trash and refuse to be good sports about anything. Get over it. We have just as good of an academic institution as Tech now, plus one of the elite athletic programs in the nation. Did you know that Tech accepts athletes with sub-900 SAT scores? Yep, you’re just like the rest of the nation, whether you like it or not. Great Engineering school and average for the rest of the programs. I’m not knocking your school…you have a lot to be proud of. But thinking your superior to anyone else, especially UGA students and alumni is flat out ridiculous. Get over yourself.

My first vote went to Shock, then I changed my mind and picked Warrick. After reading all the posts today, I have changed my mind again. Split the award three ways; Shock, Warrick and Smoltz. The award is not for the best athlete or biggest hero on any team. It is the Best Sports Person of the Year. I think you have to look at performance on and off the field, and these three stand head and shoulders above the rest.

Yeah, where is Calvin Johnson in this whole thing? Shockley is a one hit wonder and Andy, tell me who UGA beat this year that should make them stand out? You lost to Auburn and Florida, Tech beat Auburn and Miami. And if any of you are proud of a 14-7 win over Tech youre making a fool of yourself…Shockley looked horrible against Tech. Think about this…if UGA lost to Tech theyd be 8-3, if Tech beat UGA wed be 8-3…and you wanna talk about Tech winning more games during the season?? Nice try. Calvin Johnson without a doubt.

Ashley, Ashley, Ashley! You are so typical of a tech fan. Even your president says you’re not a good football program, and proved it by extending Chan’s contract. The Auburn team Tech beat was the one looking past you to the next game. The Auburn team that beat Georgia was the one that continued to mature into the best team in the SEC this year, and beat them late in the year. Take your asterisks and “if’s” and paint them on the wall of that hellhole stadium of yours with the Silicon Valley Bowl and the Emerald Nuts Bowl banners.

Ginepri is #16 in the world. That is equivalent to being an all-star in the NBA, NFL or MLB. He is a local kid from Wheeler High that has climbed near the top of men’s tennis reaching the semi-finals of the US Open and 2 other huge events. He is more deserving of anybody in a game that is the second most popular sport world-wide behind only soccer.

I’d Have to say hands down, DJ. Somebody who showed complete loyalty when somebody else would have gave up. I mean to stand in there for four years and wait for his chance. How do i spell loyalty, shockley. But give David Greene some credit, the winningest QB in NCAA history, but for shockley to come out and get 10 wins and a SEC championship, that’s gotta say something. Just answer me this, would you have stayed behind Greene?

If we are only discussing players and not coaches or any other BS, everything else pales compared to Druw’s 51 HR. It is not who your favorite player is that is something else. Ask yourself; how many people have played professional baseball in our history? Tens of thousands? In that time only 18 players have hit 50 HR. At least three of those are now suspect which drops the figure to 15. Until the steroid days of the 90s, it only happen once or twice a decade. It did not happen at all in the 80s. Hitting a baseball off a major league pitcher is still the hardest thing to do in American sports. To hit them out of the park is tougher still.
