Why not Artest here?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Ron Artest to the Hawks? It’s not going to happen. This wacky but talented player who wants to leave the Indiana Pacers likely is going to the Los Angeles Clippers for Corey Maggette.
But we can dream, can’t we?
Sure Artest has more than a few problems dealing with all of those gremlins flying inside his head. Sure he’ll never be completely happy no matter where he plays or how long he plays.
He plays, though, and he plays extremely well in all aspects of the game. He also plays with enough of an edge to do two things that would help the Hawks: Make his teammates better on the court and put fannies in the empty seats at Philips Arena. He’d eventually flip out as usual, but the struggling Hawks (their two-game winning streak notwithstanding) have nothing to lose, and they could enjoy the show why it lasts.
It’s like this: If Artest for Maggette doesn’t work, the Pacers may agree to go back to the future. They could send Artest to the Hawks for former Indiana player Al Harrington, already rumored to be out of Atlanta before the NBA trade deadline.
Oh, well.
Time to wake up.

Didn’t you just write a very similar column a few weeks ago about how the Falcons should sign Terrell Owens (another troubled soul, much like Artest)???

I’m with you on that on TM….It would be a sideshow worth seeing and he would be playing a much needed role on this team as a defensive stopper as well as another scoring option. One thing crosses my mind though, how could he get into any fights if no one is at the arena?

Please get Artest here… Make Atlanta relevant in basketball again. We have trouble on Defense, he’d solve that problem. He’d force guys to play just as hard as he does and give something ATL loves… Players with an edge…
I doubt it happens, but I definitely want it.

Yeah, brilliant idea. Bring Artest here to put butts in the seats….so he can jump in the crowd and beat up the people who those butts belong to.

believe it or not, as i watch the hawks play, they need one thing to be good, a defensive stopper.

Terence, I pray that if I live to get as old as you are now and Alzheimers hits me as severely as it’s hit you, my wife will have the guts finish me off before I start writing articles for a major newspaper!
Artest is psychotic!!! What part of that do people refuse to understand??? He’s not just mildly troubled, there are serious issues at work in him that need to be addressed before I even feel good about him walking around in free society, much less as a member of the hawks. Why trade away a good player and God knows what else for a guy that may not even be in the game in a year or two? I think he’s got one more really dangerous thing to do and I think he’s gone. Out of curiosity, how does a personality like that possibly help us?

First of all, Dont trade Al. for a short-term fix. One of the Smith bros. and T.Lue would work. Arttest would bring some toughness to the team and most of all, call the powers that be (B. Knight) to task.

The fans at Indiana gave him 100% support and he turns on them, he is a bad egg in a a lost soul and attitude…he really should not be in the NBA….

Maybe we could get Charles Manson on a work release program to come play here, too.

Not only Artest but also Sprewell would give the Hawks two high-energy veterans who could lead a fast-breaking team that would set the NBA East on its ear. David Stern would not let that happen as he has already instructed the refs to slow this team down(ex. Philly, Denver, and my favorite the “illegal assist” games). Spend the money and the playoffs are a reality!

didn’t we try that “bad attitude, but good player” a few years ago? And didn’t it turn out ot be an absolute bust with a midseason trade???? Didn’t it turn out to absolutely destroy any existing team chemistry? Bad idea…the Hawks are DISGUSTINGLY BAD, however, if there is even a slightest bit of a flame, bad attitude Artest will be sure to extinguish it.

If you want fans to be loyal, don’t you have to pick up players who can appear to be loyal?

Why not Artest here?
1) He wants to play for a winner, or a team with a chance to win…Atlanta is neither!
2) C-A-N-C-E-R!!!!

So we are talking about trading Al Harrington, who has been pretty good and has a good healthy attitude….for….a guy who is a top-notch nut case, just because he plays tougher defense?
I like the idea as much as bringing in Sprewell and Manson with him.
Keep the team we have and develope them! Don’t sell your soul for a proven nut case who happens to have a more skill today, if he’s in the game and not in the mental ward.
Atlanta has had a really bad track record with trying to trade good guys for nut cases. Let’s not keep trying the same thing hoping for different results, that’s the definition of insanity.

RON HAS A BAD ATTITUDE, AND SOME OTHER PROLEAMS,BUT IS A GREAT BASKETBALL PLAYER. THE HAWKS ARE JUST NOT DISGUSTINGLY BAD , BUT ONE OF THE WORST PRO TEAMS OF ALL TIMES. THEY LOOK PRETTY GOOD ON PAPER, BUT NOT ON THE COURT. IF WE (ATLANTA) WANT TO CONTINUE HAVING A TERRIBLE TEAM DON’T TAKE A RISK, BUT RON IS WORTH A RISK. WHAT TO LOSE, BUT A BUNCH MORE GAMES.

What is there to lose?
We have a lot of young impressionable players…the future of the club. SO what is at stake is young good players learning how to play and represent our team….do you want them to learn slowly and painfully….or quickly and possibly from someone who will set a horrible example of how to be a professional?
There is no way we risk ruining these young players with a bad seed to be their “leader and role model”.

Sure bring Artest in. And then you and Stephen A. Smith can go watch him play because then it would be his house—but gang members are welcome any time.

PLEASE TAKE ARTEST OFF OUR HANDS! Honestly the man is sane 75% of the time. It’s a joy to watch him ball. He would love being in ATL so much he would forget all about going home to NY. The perfect city in which to pimp TRU WARIOR (his spelling, not mine). The rest of the Hawks would play better out of fear. You would have an interesting story at least once a season. The Hawks would matter. The Pacers could get Hurricane Harrington back and all would be right with the world. Please call your local congressman to help this trade happen. AL 4 RON! AL 4 RON! AL 4 RON!

I think TMoore needs to lay off the sauce. I believe his article a while back regarding TO was lobbying to keep the Falcons from aquiring he of the large ego and larger mouth. So it looks like he changed all the don’t’s to do’s and inserted Artest for TO. What a hack of a journalist?

Let’s just bring Christian Laettner back, draft JJ Reddick, trade for Kyle Korver and knock the mothballs off Jon Koncak. Then we’d have a really good team and all of these fans would have a team to cheer for no matter if they lost all 82 games. DUMB A Atlanta fans**

Dammit, I got sucked into reading another crap article by TMoore again. Back when you had to subscribe to get the AJC Columnists I was never tempted to read this hack. But I just couldn’t help myself this time, I had to see how old Terence the hyperbole machine was gonna spin a new and improved Artest. What a joke. At least I was reminded to show my 4th grader an example of how NOT to write journalistic prose.

Mr. Moore, once again you have lost it….perhaps we can bring T.O. back as the ball boy (whoops..ball person). Ron Artest is an individual with issues. It is too bad though that the Hawk have become irrevelant.

“Sure Artest has Bold: more than a few problems dealing with all of those gremlins flying inside his head. Sure Bold: he’ll never be completely happy no matter where he plays or how long he plays.”
Um…I think you just effectively countered your own case for going after him…? Yeah. That’s about like the Rider situation, whose roadside orange selling escapades were far more entertaining (and productive) than anything he ever did for us.
No more headaches please.

Artest would be great for ATL. Too bad he actually has talent. I don’t think the Hawk’s ownership wants to take that route.
