Falcons can’t bully Panthers this time

Terence Moore

Charlotte — Maybe it was a fluke. I mean, long after his Carolina Panthers quit splattering the Falcons across the floor of Bank of America Stadium on Sunday, Brentson Buckner shrugged. Then the chatty defensive tackle of 300-something pounds said this of the slaughter: “They had won so many against us that it gets to the point where you get backed into the corner, and you finally get tired of the so-called bully picking on you.”

Buckner thought some more about how his team physically embarrassed the Falcons along the way to rising higher atop the NFC South and added, “They’re over there fuming about this. It’s going to make the next game we play against them even more intense. So we can’t bask for long, because when we stroll down there, they have a chance to get their ‘get-back.’ “

Well, maybe. It’s just that, by the time the Falcons see the Panthers on New Year’s Day at the Georgia Dome, it may be too late for the Falcons to do anything more than just capture the first back-to-back winning seasons in the history of their 40-year-old franchise. They’ve lost three of four, and they’ve dropped to 7-5 in the division behind the 9-3 Panthers, with even a wild-card berth in the playoffs becoming less likely these days.

Here’s why: This wasn’t a fluke. After a season of victories over uninspiring teams, the Falcons had an opportunity to show their worth against a legitimate big boy in the NFL. Instead, the Falcons were the ones to blink on offense, defense and special teams. Faster than you can say Samkon Gado (remember the Falcons’ Green Bay disaster?), they allowed DeShaun Foster to awaken the Panthers’ previously dormant run game. The Falcons couldn’t punt, tackle or pass block. Mostly, they couldn’t keep the Panthers’ defense from looking bigger and badder than ever.

Thirty-eight seconds. That’s how long it took after the opening kickoff before Michael Rucker zipped out of nowhere for the Panthers to nearly smack the No. 7 off Michael Vick.

They’d meet again. Several times, in fact, with the biggest time coming on the Falcons’ silly fourth-and-1 try in the second quarter from the Carolina 46. Rucker knocked Vick from here to Flowery Branch. Many other Panthers did the same during an afternoon that had many Falcons looking absolutely overwhelmed for the first time this season.

“When you’re used to kicking a team’s butt on the road, it’s tough when you lose a game like this,â€? said tight end Alge Crumpler, whose Falcons had beaten the Panthers on the road and everywhere else, with nine victories in the previous 10 meetings. “It really hurts me right now to say that we didn’t line up and play the Falcons’ standard of football. They just kicked [our butts]. They did. They put a lot of pressure on us up front. We couldn’t get anything going. Coverage wise, they weren’t doing anything much different. They were just making things happen to get us out of our rhythm.”

Translated: The Panthers were slugging the Falcons in the nose and daring them to do something about it.

Guess what? The Falcons will see more of the same from now through their rematch with the Panthers. There is that trip to Chicago, along with one to Tampa Bay. They also play their next game on Monday night at home against a New Orleans team that always brings more energy against its Southern rivals. Plus, given that a promising season was ruined by a hurricane and cruel scheduling by the NFL, that Monday night game on national television will be the Saints’ Super Bowl.

Falcons safety Keion Carpenter responded to it all with raised eyebrows, especially regarding the Panthers.

“Bullied? I don’t know if they were bullying us out there, said Carpenter, glancing around the locker room. “We’ve got the toughest division in football right now, and the teams are so good that we really can’t afford any mishaps. That’s what makes it fun, man, to play in games such as this that means something. To be in this situation is a beautiful thing, and we just have to capitalize on it.

They haven’t yet. The question is two-fold: Will they, and can they?

Some may view your words as harsh, but the reality is the Falcons are chasing a Wild Card berth and/or the first back to back winning seasons in franchise history. This team is flawed mostly on defense and partly on offense and is not a super bowl contender for the 2005 season. They have beat mediocre teams and have folded against better competition.

The key is that the team builds upon this season to get better next year. No doubt that our secondary, D-line, and special teams will see many changes in the offseason.

Whatever happens, please, please, please, don’t take on the Braves’ attitude that Division titles are the goal. Thanks.

Keion and the entire saftey crew can’t stop the run and he raises his eyebrows?

The Falcons lose 3 out the last 4 and he wants to call it fun?

They shut the Oline up from talking to the press and let the weakest links in our defense ramble on like they belong in the Pro Bowl?

Carolina was dead last in rushing and and ran through our defense like drawn butter.

Keion needs to worry about his own play making ability and less about getting ink.

The Falcons will be lucky to finish above .500. The second winning season in a row seems to be fading. Just a horrible display of coaching and play calling.

Vick should be running at least 6-7 times a game to keep the defense off balance. So what does he do? Runs only 3 times and maybe only one of those was by design. That is a coaching problem. The game against Detroit was how we win games. Vick running 6 times for 50+ yards, 150-180 yards throwing and a couple of passing touchdowns, and some good defensive plays.

They had a model of how Buffalo held Carolina last week and when asked Mora says they don’t have the defensive personnel to do what Buffalo did. So we just go ahead and do what we do and lose big without even trying?

And when questioned about certain decisions that everyone can see are wrong, Mora defends them. And Hall’s attitude and fighting are getting old.

And what was with Vick running right into the rush to get sacked? More than once he ran forward to the defender coming after him. He could have thrown at least a couple of those away.

This game disgusted me with the coaching and play calling more than anything else. It was a horrible effort.

The o-line is a joke. They can’t pass protect. 4th and 1 and they can’t block. Mckay and his crew knew about the o-line before the season started and did nothing about it. Knapp and the offensive coaches have no clue how to call plays:

My grandma actually alerted me that the falcons seem to run on 2nd and long all the time. On 3rd and long, the falcons will call a draw play and punt the ball

The Panthers blitzed on almost every other play. The had 8-9 players in the box on every running play. There are different ways to beat the blitz but our coaches are either inept or don’t feel like calling such plays.

And another thing, everyone knows that when you put pressure on Delhomme he makes mistakes. And what do we do? Hardly any blitzes at all.

It is as if the coaches do not watch any game film at all of the other games. Sheesh.

Every aspect of this game was a total embarassment, from the play calling to the effort by most of the players. Just before the Falcons tried the draw play on third and long every single person in my group including all of the females said that the falcons would try it and they did and it got stuffed. So predictable.

jim mora was laughing in the middle og the forth quater, I did not see any humor in this game this coaching staff has problems they were not prepred mick vick should have run more to get out of the blitz its like jin mora is trying his best to make mike a drop-back passer, mike vick is not the same mick vick of last year when he was running for 70 to 100 yards a game THATS WHAT THIS TEAM IS MISSING ON OFFENSE, The defense cannot tackle the falcons need to make a coaching change hire an aggressive d.c.the next time i see a player or a coach for the falcons laughing after being blown off the field i will turn the t.v. off

I don’t know, you people give up way too easy. As a long time Falcons fan, maybe I’m so used to losing seasons, that last year’s 11-5 mark spoiled me into thinking they could do it again. HOWEVER, look around you. You are all fools if you think Tampa Bay is going anywhere. They barely scored 10 pts yesterday, and what anyone think that we can’t be a wildcard team? Listen, in the AFC, Pittsburgh has its flaws. They were supposedly a powerhouse, and they have dropped 3 straight, including one game to the stinken Ravens. They are in the same boat we are; Chasing a wild card slot. We really need some help, and we really need to win some games, like 3 in a row, or win all 4. But YES, I do agree. This team has its share of flaws, many of which start at the coaching staff. We can always look forward to some changes next year, but please don’t give up on these guys yet.

Remember the Green Bay game!

What was suspicious has now become indisputable evidence, to wit:

  1. Michael Vick has not progressed as a savvy QB. You can blame everything, every time on the OL, the coaches, or his corn rows if you want, but the fact is that he is absolutely clueless at the line of scrimmage and cannot read even the most basic defensive schemes. Manning or Brady would have ripped the Panthers apart with an audible at the line and Vick can only think to run like playground QB. We cannot dumb-down the offense any further and be unpredictable and the great defenses just simply rush at a Vick led offense and now fearlessly attack him without any regard to the passing game. In short, he has reached a plateau and is not smart enough or accurate enough to beat great defensive personnel. Has Vick EVER defeated a great defense in a key, must-win game?

  2. Because of the above “dumb-downed” offense for our “athlete” playing QB, the coaches have become too predictable on offense. I want everyone to review the game and note that the Falcons ran the ball EVERY TIME on second and 10 after an incomplete pass on first down. This happened, I think 8-10 times in the game. This means they were in 3rd and 7 or more throughout the game—stupid, stupid, stupid!

  3. Mora. Not good, folks! He got a healthy Vick back in his first year, and with Dan Reeves’ players, an easy schedule, and a lot of good breaks, he really looked good last year, right? We’ll our team has lost to every respectable team this year and had their worst regular season performance yesterday under Mora. Are we really making progress?

Solutions:

  1. To win a Super Bowl, we either must get a QB with the wits and accuracy to run the West Coast offense or abandon it entirely or allow Mike Vick to play in an offense to maximize his unique athleticism. Even with the latter, he’d probably never take us to the promise land because the great defenses you’ll see deep in the playoffs will simply dare him to beat you with his arm and rush 6-7 guys like Carolina did yesterday.

  2. Get a bright, respected, disciplined coach to provide a balanced personality to the current day athlete and not one who snorts ammonia with his players. Perhaps this ammonia has damaged his brain such that he was smiling yesterday during our team’s horrendous 4th quarter. Do ya think Parcells or Bilichick would have been smiling yesterday?

At season’s end, remember the Green Bay game!

I’ve taken a few minutes to read a lot of these comments and, for the most part, they’re all full of facts. Quite unfortunate, though, that we can see all of this from the outside and we’re just looking in. Sort of like the Falcons are going to be doing with the playoffs, huh? And sort of like the coaching staff is doing… just “looking in…” because they dang sure aren’t doing anything about it. I have never seen such lame game planning and misuse of talent. It cracks me up that Greg Knapp is a hot name in the head coaching vacancy arena right now. Are these guys kidding? Well, for all we know, maybe those teams interested in Knapp would like to have a mediocre offense on the field every Sunday, too.

Since the entire Falcon offense is supposedly predicated on the run, how about the Falcons taking a look at someone like Max Jean-Gilles (6’4”, 350lbs) in the draft? I’m sick of all these undersized, athletic guys who wear down as the game goes on. We need some beef if we’re going to continue running the ball and, hey, maybe we can keep Vick off of his backside some, too.

It’s downright sickening to know that the Falcons went from CONTENDER to PRETENDER in just four games. At least we can look forward to some good college bowl games in the next month.

Sorry, I have to admit, to be saying this but it looks like our coaches are in over their heads! They never have been able to make adjustments during a game to counter whatever the other team is having success doing. Smart coaches go into a game with a plan A, B, C, and D. We go into a game with plan A and if it doesn’t work, so be it! Are the coaches that inept or are they trying to protect an “investment” from being a “bad decision” and an embarrassment? Will someone be a man and admit it? No, I don’t think they will.

As I have been saying since early in the season, Mora is NOT the guy to lead this team to great things. He got a lucky break his first season with the team Reeves built and a soft schedule. Then he got several other breaks this season with at least two games that could have gone either way. His goofy demeanor on the sidelines is a sign of the fact that he is in way over his head for the job. I predicted after two games that the Falcons would be lucky to finish the year at 500. With the schedule that’s ahead of them it seems very unlikely that they will finish at 500. There is plenty of young talent on board. What is missing is a competent coach that is a strong leader and not a cheerleader on the sidelines.

the problem was the play calling. If the Panthers are using 8-9 guys to stop the run, the O-line can’t block them. Where were the quick slants, outs, and screens? Why all these deep drop back passes? Whith that many people coming all day, there is no way you were going to have success offensively unless you throw some quick stuff to slow down the blitzing. Greg Knapp is horrible and our secondary plays way too soft. But I guess Webster has to play soft because he can’t stay with any receiver in the NFL.

By Derico

December 5, 2005 09:16 AM | Link to this

Jim you make an excellent point that our coaching staff DOES NOT make adjustments. This reminds me of all the leads we had at halftime the last year Dan Reeves was coach and did not make adjustments. The thing that disturbs me the most is that our secondary is soft. We have nobody that has the testosterone on defense to smack somebody in the mouth. Our safeties are as fragile as Chris Chandler. When Rossum went down our coaches had NO clue what to do (Brian Finneran returning punts) give me a break. I will admit it our coaching staff looks like the rookies I expected last year. They want “character” guys who play little b**es! They need some defensive players who have a nasty streak. Everyone else’s defensive personnel in the NFC South will come up and smash someone in the mouth.

Guys, it’s really simple. Your coach is trying so hard to prove Vick is a pocket passer, that he is willing to lose games to prove his point. He doesn’t mind this losing strategy, you all saw him laughing it up in the fourth quarter. Teams with teamwork win games in the NFL. Individuals out to prove a point get their butts whipped every time.

Guys, it’s simple. With Ed Hartwell, we stopped the run. Once he got injured, we can’t stop it. End of story. Period.

The offense needs a wide receiver that can get open deep. The defense needs a monster middle linebacker that can stop the run.

As a Panther’s fan looking objectively at Atlanta’s offense after Sunday’s game, I would recommend the following change. Move Matt Schaub to QB and Michael Vick to an H-Back position. That is, an all purpose position identical to that which Reggie Bush currently plays for Southern California. Vick would be at his best when not buedened with the task of running an offense. Lining him up at different positions would cause unbelievable problems for opposing defenses. In my opinion, this would be a major step in the Falcon’s making a serious Super Bowl run. The Falcon’s have the single greatest offensive weapon in pro football’s modern era, if it is utilized the right way.

For what it’s worth Falcon fans…..

Vick trying to prove that he can be a pocket passer has been the reason for all of the last 4 losses. Ever since he had that one good game passing, he has gone away from doing what it takes to win. He has been stuck on “Dumbass” the past 3 losses for sure. It was evident in a play in the 4th quarter that Vick scrambled and tried to hold onto the ball as long as he could and trying not to get beyond the scrimmage line before throwing an incomplete pass. The “NORMAL” Vick would have been about 50 yards downfield without any hesitation. What Vick needs to do is, “What he does best”, and that is run the damn ball and stop holding the ball until they smack him in the mouth for a sack. Listen Vick, it would be better to get smacked in the mouth after gaining 30 to 50 yards, than behind the line of scrimmage. Forget those critics and get back to doing what got you into the NFL. I hope you are reading this or maybe a friend of yours can tell you this.

I don’t think Mora told Vick to stand up to the media and tell everyone not to criticize him.

Vick is determined to be a QB and that means throwing the ball from the pocket. It also means not doing what he does best.

The Falcons are going to lose until they let Vick be Vick. When was the last time he really scared teams with his feet?

He is what he is, and that’s the best athlete in the NFL, but he isn’t what he isn’t, and that’s Manning.

I’ve been a Falcon’s fan since they started, and they’ve always been bad. Looks like nothing’s changed.

Falcons will have their first back-to-back winning season in history. Falcons will not make the play-offs, but will be just good enough to have a crappy draft that will be wasted on more wide receivers. We need more DEFENSE and a better offensive line. Anyone here old enough to remember “Randy Johnson at QB”? He was supposed to be a quarterback but the falcons just left him so unprotected and beat-up that he looked like a punch drunk prize fighter trying to play football. Well I hope the same doesn’t happen to Mr. Vick. He is a player but he isn’t a team.

OK, I said this earlier in the season, I think just after the New England game but here goes again! Falcon defensive ummm, not coaches, umm what is the word I am looking for, hang on…….. ok I am back now, that was Mr. Webster informing me that he saw the game yesterday and all of the preceeding games and he is working really hard to find the word that would describe the personnel responsible for Atlanta’s defense. Says this one is the toughest out of the millions he has posted to our dictionaries. N E way, a total of 12 games have been played and not “ONE” change has been made to this sorry good for nothing defense, especially in the secondary. Here is what I actually said after the New England game. Atlanta has players on their practice squad that can and will play defense if given the opportunity. One for sure is the the kid out of Bennetsville, SC by the name of Cam Newton! Cam was active for one game(Jets) and back to the practice squad he goes. These sorry slugs in the secondary have been garbage all year and back into the line up they go week after week. Ray Charles just called as well and said he can see that! Mora and staff, did you all know that you have Newton and some other guys on your practice squad that should be lining up on Sunday’s instead of the Ying Yan Squad??? Oh, that’s right, you probably didn’t even know you had a practice squad!!! Perhaps you and the rest of your staff should become the practice squad coahces and let the fans coach on Sundays. You all are terrible and appears you have the slighest clue! You all go and get with the Hawks head coach and get out of town NOW!!!!

the time has come to pay close attention to the falcon’s coaching staff, because the falcons continue to get out coached, i’m starting to believe Mora is not up for the job and knapp is a joke…. the problem with the falcons offense is that they do not have a “TRUE RUNNING GAME” yes we lead the league in rushing last year, but you cant base rushing on a running QB, Duckett is a waste of time and Dunn; who is a giant in a small package is not equipted to carry the entire load. (the big back, little back scheme does not work) this is the reason why Tampa Bay got rid of this concept when Dunn was there. We need a rb that weighs about 215lbs that can get the ball 20-25 times per game, look around the league everybody has this type of back.. A good workhorse would take some pressure off Vick which would then open up the pass. You can’t expect to continue to run a 180lb back off tackle against a defense like carolina and expect to move the ball. No offense against Dunn, he is truely a giant, but we are asking him to do too much.. Duckett’s new name is the (TIP TOE BANDIT), he needs to take notes form Jamal Anderson and run with a little bit more conviction, which would mean Duckett needs to pump his legs higher and become more aggressive. The Falcons need to trade Duckett for a real back this will help the offense out. On defense the falcons are hurting bad at the linebacker position, I know many of you will not like this, but the falcons need to trade Brookings while they still have a chance you cant expect db’s to come up and make tackles that the lb’s are suppose to be making. the fact remains the falcons are a light weight team in terms of size they need to beef of the team, first in the area of running back and linebacker… they should trade(Duckett, Brookings and Rossum)this would allow them to pick up a good running back to help Dunn, and allow them to pick up a younger bigger , faster linebacker to replace Brookings……..

Vick sucks… it’s not the scheme, or the players, or the attitude, or the defense..it’s the freaking QB that makes the difference in the game…stop making excuses, stop blaming the losses on everyone and everything but the all-glorious Vick… just look at Brad Johnson and the Vikes, even an adequate QB in this league can score a freaking TD, I mean one TD…Vick is no leader, he’s not smart enough…he’s not smart enough to call an audible… the Birds are in a real mess…and no ones willing to admit Vicks inability, we’ve lost the last 3 out of 4…we beat Detroit, my Lord that’s something to be proud of.

The under sized lineman are getting run over, Mike is running for life before he has time to set up. I can’t understand the game plan not changing when the defense put 8 and 9 in the box. The defense sceme stinks with our personnel. The Bills showed us that Steve Smith has to be doubled. The bottom line the coaching staff and team aren’t being consistant. It is obvious that the coaching staff of the falcons must stop hiding behind vick, they need to start coaching. It does’nt take a rocket scientist to realize that to beat the falcons all you have to do is stop Vick. I have never seen a player in the nfl that has been critisized the way you guys come down on vick..There must be some hidden reason for most of you to act this way. I think I know what it is , but I will not go there today, because some people will never change. The fact of the matter is Vick is the best player on the falcons, however, as we have seen in the past 4yrs, he can not win by himself, he needs help. He needs help from other players as well as help from the COACHES, there are ways to counter act a team that chooses to rush the Qb every play. The coaching staff needs to try to find out what these counter actions are and stop letting Vick continue to get killed out there. I’m starting to wonder if the coaching staff is against Vick or if they are on his side. It appears that they do not mind if he gets hit over and over again. In order to run the west coast offense you have to have the right personnel, THE FALCONS DO NOT HAVE THE RIGHT PERSONNEL FOR THE WEST COAST OFFENSE, abandon ship (PLEASE)…

Several times it has been mentioned that; Vick isn’t running “like last year”, or he’s trying to prove he is a pocket passer. Read at my comments at the beginnig of the season and weep. Michael CAN’T run like he did last season. His only ventures past the line of scrimmage Sunday were less than spectacular. Normally, his runs are all highlights. Look back, this year his runs have been nothing SINCE he got hurt. The man is PROBABLY tired, and definitely in pain. His career has started downhill. NOW, I have said, from day one, that Michael should think “pass first,” run as a last resort, all because his career would be shortened by repeated hits. Remember! He should have listened. (No Vick hate, just facts.) A promising career is ending before our very eyes.

This falcons team isn’t that flawed. They have been let down too many times by the defense this year. They lost too many close games because of the defense. you can’t call the season over just because of a loss on the road to a very good team.

the falcons have some holes to fill mainly at cornerback and safety. but the front seven has potential it just needs time to grow. there are so many young players up front they are being exposed in the run game.

As for vick, I don’t think he is at fault. he has no time to set up and make a play. once he adjusts to the way defenses are playing him with all these blitzes, he will take the next step as a quarterback. he definately still needs to run about 8 times to be dominant. he has to use his legs in order to be GREAT.

I do have a problem with the offensive play calling by knapp though. it just doesn’t seem that good. period.

After watching the mauling of the Falcons by the Panthers I felt like Vick and the Falcons’ Offense must have felt. I was stunned, dazed, seeing stars and * I swear that I heard the Fat Lady Sing*. There is always next year.

Most of you spend alot more time analyzing this than I and your efforts are obvious. But let me run my idea past you guys and see if I am dreaming ——

Over the past couple of months, while some Atlanta media were saying that Vick couldn’t pass, his brother was having some incredible games at Va Tech. Then the national media began writing some stories that basically said, Marcus was the better QB. As soon as those stories started to hit - about the Green Bay game - Michael Vick became more combatant with the press, began passing more and making sure we saw it. And who can forget his comments after the Miami game that he was not going to hear anymore about his passing again??

I think Vick has changed, not because Mora and Knapp demanded it, but because he is trying to show that he can be an all-around QB like Marcus is. What about it?

To the team: Many of these comments criticize various, if not every, component of the team. While I, too, have been disappointed over the last four games, I am far from being ready to throw in the towel on this team.

This is a young team, in terms of the coaching staff and the time spent together. Coach Mora and owner Arthur Blank have only been together two years.

It was quite an accomplishment to go to the NFL title game in your first year. I, for one, appreciate the team. I am proud of the team. Instead of criticizing and being fair weather fans, let’s appreciate what we have.

The season is not over. Let’s not throw in the towel. Anything can happen in the next four games. We’ve seen turnarounds in Minnesota - New England is not out of it yet. We must realize that every team in the NFL has the same goal each week.

The measure of a great person or a group of persons is in how adversity is addressed. I believe in this team.

Pick yourselves up, Mike, Warwick, T.J., Patrick, Keith and all the others. We are not out of it yet, Coach Mora.

I, for one, salute you!!!

Oh what the hell, along as we are visiting the PAC 10. Carson Palmer is actually doing better (11 QB ratings in a row above 100) than that QB from TN. LOL. SEC is best at what again?

As I see it, our main problems exist in the defense having too many rookies and the coaching staff running this team like a bunch of rookies.

Mora does not have control of this team; I’m tired of Hall and his out of control antics; as well as, poor coverage and tackling.

The play calling by Knapp is ridiculous. Even a child with basic football knowledge could call more unpredictable plays than he does. Vick isn’t the problem…it’s this gimmicky offensive line and rushing system of Alex Gibbs. We need to get a conventional offensive line in here with guys that aren’t getting blown off the ball constantly.

We need defensive linemen who can bull rush the middle with quick DEs coming off the ends. We are way too small on both sides of our OL & DL. Where are the fundamental skills? Our guys still have a problem tackling and getting pushed off their gaps…I don’t care if they are rookies (it comes down to coaching once again).

Lovie Smith seems to be having much more success with his defense in his second year…why is that? Could it be that McKay is a fluke and really didn’t have as much of a hand in building Tampa’s D? It’s funny how Tim Ruskell went to Seattle as the GM and has build a stronger defense in one year.

Arthur you may need to cut your losses early and send Mora & his staff packing just like his mentor Mariucci. I’m sick of this up and down seasons…one year we win, the next we’re losing. Bring in a disciplinarian coach with old school defensive and offensive philosophies. It’s time for the gimmicks to go.

If we had half decent safeties we would be much better off. Carpenter & Scott are the two worst starting safeties in football… it’s hard to say this but I actually miss Cory Hall. We need another D-lineman & some safeties bad. Jason Webster is a weak link as well but he can tackle & Kevin Mathis should be ready next year. Our offense is stinking up the join, this game reminded me of the Eagles NFC Championship game. We were in the game at halftime & it was tough & physical. Their defense was over-aggressive & we didn’t make any adjustments. We can only run the ball & thats our achilles heel. If we have a game where we cant get the ground game working against an over-aggressive defense then we get in a hole where we cant move the ball, and just 3 n outs. Our o-line was built for run blocking, and we’re great at that (except against aggressive defenses) but in pass protection & blitz pickup our o-line just flat out stinks. Alex Gibbs likes these no name guys but we need better o-lineman that can pass protect as well as run block instead of just the latter. This team is really flawed, but the thing that dissappoints me the most is that when we got punched in the mouth we didn’t punch back. Only Keith Brooking did, it seemed like we didn’t play with any sense of urgency… lackadasical & not really interested, that is a problem and it’s a coaches responsibility to prevent that from ever happening. Vick was actually better in Dan Reeves offense.

Atlanta has the most mobile quarterback in the league. Why is there no criticism of the play calling and offensive schemes? I’m a Panther ticket holder and the sad thing about the game, even though we won, was the waste of Michael Vick’s talent. Wake up Atlanta. Even though you didn’t play your best, Michael Vick doesn’t get sacked 5 times is the right scheme. It’s like he’s so concerned with staying in the pocket that his best talent is being squandered. LET THE MAN RUN!!!!

I finally watched the entire game. WOW Vick is GARBAGE. Good luck to all you mindless falcon fans who follow this clown. 2 picks, sacked like 58 times or something. The offensive line certainly wasn’t great but if Vick had a clue he would have threw a few balls away. Only in Atlanta would they put a RB at the QB position. Good luck with this over payed flashy selfish bum.

I remember a few weeks ago where Vick “silenced his critics” in a win over a sub par team. He said “wins is the only stat i care about” Well not that he doesn’t even have those can we all finally admit this guy is in no way shape or form a QB. GARBAGE.

The University of South Carolina had a QB a couple of years ago by the name of Corey Jenkins that just could not produce. Lou Holtz put him over on the defensive side of the ball and he produced results.(All and only in his Senior year) He went on to be drafted by the Miami Dolphins as a Linebacker.(Drastic change huh?) Could this be a similar with the Vick situation??? Could he produce better results as a Wide out, slot back etc etc.????????? Anyone remember Kordell Stewart????????

I love reading the posts that say “Let Vick do what he does best and run”. You people just don’t get it. If the best and ONLY thing your QB can do is run. Your in A LOT of trouble. He can’t pass, he is no leader, he never calls audible, can’t read a defense. To those that say he is no Manning, your right Manning is 12-0 and never runs. Vick “the best athlete in the league” isn’t.. I agree with Mike. Vick is GARBAGE.

I’ve got zero respect for Algy anymore. None, zip, nada. Tar Heels don’t do that to Tar Heels. Well, shouldn’t be done to anybody but a rolled-up at-the knee career-block[his career, not yours] is a no-no. Other D-ends and L-backers are gonna see that film and think “so that’s the way he plays”. His comment to the Charlotte paper was cheap,”I love him and don’t want to hurt him”. What does Algy think a helmet to the knee does? Pepp doesn’t deserve that.He isn’t down and low. **KORDELL VICK**

Just simply is not an NFL QB. The Vick jockhuggers say “When Vick starts we win “. People, you have to let these teams that are kicking the crap out of us know that. Here’s the other one that kills me “Let Vick be Kordell,oops_ Vick”. When teams figure out that a QB can’t read a defense or complete a pass under pressure and put 8 men in the box and a spy on Superman no one can run the ball… The pass opens up the running game, remember?

The “real” falcons showed up yesterday. 6-1 record against non-winning teams. 1-4 against .500 plus teams. Defenses always catch up to offenses. Tampa Bay gave the Blueprint on how to beat Vick. Attack,Attack.Attack. Carolina just followed the same game plan. The Falcons have beaten only one team with a winning record(Minnesota before Brad Johnson). with Chicago,Tampa Bay and Carolina to finish out the season, I would be happy for the birds to finish 9-7.

THE FALCONS WILL NOT MAKE THE PLAYOFFS OF GUYS ON DEFENSE LIKE K.CARPENTER CONTINUE TO MISS TACKLES & MISS OPPURTINITIES TO MAKE GAME CHANGING PLAYS(INT’S) LIKE THAT D.FOSTER TD CATCH CARPENTER WASN’T IN POSITION TO BREAK THE PASS UP & THEN MISSED THE TACKLE. HE HAS THE GALL TO TALK ABOUT CAPITALIZING ON OPPORTUNITIES & PLAYING IN BIG GAMES. MAKE A BIG PLAY IN THESE BIG GAMES. HE & B.SCOTT ARE SOME OF THE WORST SAFETIES IN THE LEAGUE;THEIR EITHER MISSING TACKLES, DROPPING INT’S OR OUT OF PLACE IN PASS COVERAGE. BOTH OF THEM NEED TO BE BENCHED. LET’S SEE WHAT R.HEARD & A. EDWARDS CAN DO. THEY HAVE TO BE BETTER THAN THOSE TWO. I ALSO DON’T SEE THE FALCONS AKING THE PLAYOFFS BECAUSE THE D-LINE IS TOO SMALL & YOUNG. MANAGMENT MADE A HUGE MISTAKE LETTING ED JASPER & T. HALL GO. I KNOW JASPER WAS TALKING ABOUT RETIRING BUT THEY SHOULD HAVE TRIED TO KEEP HIM NOW HE’S WITH THE RAIDERS. TRAVIS HALL WOULD HAVE HELPED IMMENSLY BECAUSE OF HIS ABILITY TO PLAY TACKLE OR END;WITH B.SMITH’S INJURIES IT WOULD HAVE BEEN NICE TO HAVE HIM TO BE THAT STABILIZING FORCE THEN WE WOULDN’T BE DEPENDENT ON THE ROOKIE LINEMEN TO PERFORM OVER THEIR HEADS WHICH ISN’T GOING TO HAPPEN CONSISTENTLY. THE FALCONS NEED A BIG RUNSTUFFING LINEMAN(OVER 300 LBS) TO CLOG UP THE MIDDLE SO THE LB’S CAN MAKE SOME PLAYS. THE DC’S PHILOSOPHY OF THIS SMALL QUICK LINE IS JUST NOT WORKING & ONE OF THE THINGS THAT NEED TO CHANGE ALONG WITH SOME PLAYMAKING SAFETIES SO WE DON’T NEED TO PLAY THAT LOOSE COVER 3 DEFENSE THAT GIVES UP HUGE PASSING YARDS. BY THE WAY WHERE HAS ROD COLEMAN BEEN THE LAST MONTH. WE NEED YOU TO STEP UP BIG GUY.

Hate to tell you this Falcon Fans - but Vick won’t make it as a RB either. He doesn’t want to get hit (as showed by his not tackling after one of his INTs yesterday) and crys to the refs every time he does get hit. You need someone tough like you already have - Dunn or Duckett. Maybe he could be like Keyshon - run for the sidelines on a route as a WR..

Vick, I heard u talking much smack after beating on poor scrub teams. Can you read a defense? Audible man!!! When u see a blitz coming. Go ahead and put in Schaub. Make Vick a Slot receiver. Three games in the past 11 months sums up Vick: 04 NFC championship game against Philly, Tampa bay’s gameplan, and now Carolina. Attacking defenses with a superior front seven continue to give Vick major problems.

It’s been a long time since i’ve heard these many negative postings about MV7 on the Falcons blog. The last time I heard football was a team sport. If you point this lost on Vick, then you should point the wins and the trip to the NFC Title game at Vick too. This year when we go to the playoffs (in which we are currently in 6th place, point that to Vick). And Randy, it’s embarrassing that you would rather have a Doug Johnson or Kurt Kitner as a Quarterback than MV7. America truly has a problem!

http://www.nfl.com/teams/story/PIT/6213562

Also, I noticed on NFL.com that my stats don’t seem to show any progress and hell I am five years into this experiment.

-Passing % is below last year -Yard per attempt is the 2nd lowest of my career -QB rating is low…AGAIN. -GOOD GOD rushing per attempt is the lowest of my career. Running is what I do. -On course to have most interceptions in my career -Jesus, and I am on course to have the most fumbles in my career.

Hey Coach Mora, just when am I supposed to start turning the corner?

The haters are out today. They have been in hiding and waiting for the Falcons to fail. What I have now realized is that you people will never be happy. Carolina was the better team, just as Atlanta had been the previous years. The defensive line sucks and has sucked without Brady Smith. Atlanta won last year by smacking people in the mouth, and now they are getting smacked in the mouth. Coaches cant stop that, its not the scheme, what Vick can read, the Panthers lined up and said we will not be stopped and hey they won. I hope none of you people manage, cause all your employees would be fired. And by the way Brad Johnson, has two Pro Bowl lineman protecting him and he is 10+ year vet. If this was year 6 or 7 of Vick starting, well I might agree with you guys. Vick is not a WR or RB you people, Kordell never won in Pitt. Also, one final comment please stop analyzing his progressions from watching the game on Fox, there are probably 2%(people who played or coached college ball) of you people that could get the film of the game and break it down and grade Vick on his responsibilities. If Vick was that bad in film sessions, the Falcons would trade him and give Schaub a shot. But you guess you guys are just fans, at least you care about them, you just show in an Atlanta sports fan type of way.

As I said earlier, the problem with the defense is the LINEBACKERS, when Hartwell went down, the defense went along with him, Brookings playing middle is not going to cut the cake, he gets blocked to easy and he doesnt have very good speed, anyone who knows and watches the defense will agree with me, when a team is weak at the linebacker position it is easy to run. the problem with the falcons is not the secondary the problem with the falcons is they CAN NOT STOP THE RUN…I really think most of you guys are JEALOUS of VICK because you take such pride and conviction in putting him down or is it because he is a young black male with braids in his head and ear rings in his ears who happens to be making a lot of MONEY$$$$.. the PROOF is in the pudding you guys are jealous of MIKE VICK…….

You people that post on here have to be the biggest group of morons ever. I am embarrased that I am actually reading this blog. We did not lose to Tampa, New England, and Carolina because of Mike Vick. He has been the 2nd highest rated passer in the NFL the last 5 weeks and that inlcudes against Tampa. Carolina played better. And I am sick of this Vick is not intelligent crap. How many of you on this blog have ever played QB. I have seen him check out of plenty of plays and he did so against Carolina. They just physically whipped us up front. If you dominate up front, you win. Did you see Brady in his 4 interception game. He did not have tome to throw and you see the results. Look at Brett Favre. No time to throw and you see the results. They took away out running game and nobody made plays. That was a defensive game and our defense made no plays. Theirs did. I am also sick of all you closet rednecks saying schaub should start. Tell me why? He would have been sacked 9 times yesterday. The team had a bad game. Do you a***** watch the games? We are still 7-5 and not out of it. I guarantee we will make the playoffs. We seem to play best when our backs are against the wall. For those saying Vick does not beat good defenses. We just beat the Eagles defense, he threw for 300 plus yards against the Bucs defense, and he has killed the Panthers not withstanding yesterdays debacle. That was a team loss yesterday. Poor tackling and worse blocking. The pass protection was so poor that Alge had to stay and help block which is why he did not have many pass attempts come his way. This is the NFL. The other team gets paid as well. What do Ben Rothsliberger, Mike Vick, and Tom Brady have in common? 7-5 records. it is more than the QB. I happen to think that vick has played pretty well this year. What has Schaub shown you in games that mattered? Does anyone remember Doug Johnson? You closet bigots that keep saying Vick should be a H-back need to get a life. You all probably think that balck QB’s are not smart enough. What I will tell you is yo better get prepared because there are more and more black QB’s in college and that means more in the NFL. Stop your hating and leave your personal agenda’s out of sports blog. Go to Bill O’Reilly for that. Atlanta is a big city, but this is still the South.

As a Panthers fan - I would like to thank Mr. NFL - the best damn pocket quaterback that ever lived for being such a team player. Can someone please tell me why, after EVERY offensive possesion, Mr. NFL would walk over to his bench and sit his lowly a* in the seat until it was his turn to get the ball again?? You watch any other QB on Sunday and you will NEVER….NEVER see them sitting on the bench by themselves during the game. That was just PATHETIC - He is and never was about being a part of a TEAM - he is about himself and it showed on Sunday and I hope it shows on every other Sunday from here on out!! and as far as being a passer is concerned…..Mr. NFL you are about as good of a passer as my 8 year old son - at least he can read a BLITZ - go away - reap your millions and allow a good QB to lead that miserable excuse for a team.

Well said Rob D. What a bunch of nonsense being posted here today. The haters just sit in the wings waiting for Vick to have a bad day and then the resulting loss becomes all his fault. Shaub would have been KILLED yesterday because NO QB could have made consistently good throws under the duress that Vick was under.

We allow Carolina to have their first hundred yard rusher of the SEASON and yet it is Vick’s fault we lost. The Panthers haven’t been able to run on ANYBODY and yet our run D is so bad, it can’t stop anybody. DeShaun Foster looked like Herschel Walker in college against our pathetic run D. Carpenter and Scott are the worst tackling pair of safeties I have EVER seen on one team. If we don’t draft or trade for at least one safety next year (and preferably 2), I just don’t understand it.

We allow a defensive lineman to come through UNTOUCHED and tackle Vick in the backfield on a big 4th and 1 and its all his fault.

Carolina’s D linemen and linebackers brought constant pressure to Vick giving him NO time to throw and it is ALL his fault.

Uncharacteristically, Crumpler had at least 2 huge drive-killing drops on 3rd down on balls that Vick put right on the money.

Vick made his share of mistakes yesterday but he was FAR from the reason we lost. He actually didn’t play that badly considering the constant pressure he was under. The reason we lost is because Carolina played with more urgency on both sides of the ball and because their D is FAR more physical than ours. If you can’t play physical D in the NFC South, you are not going to win. Last year, we did and we won. This year, we don’t and we are not winning.

Vick one of the best players in the leauge.. Thats an absolute joke? Have you watched the last month. He’s a QB and the ONLY thing he can do is run. They must be pushing something in the air in the dome you people must be brainwashed.

Would the black audience tolerate (buy into) the NFL pushing a sorry white QB like the white audience does with VICK?

I think not. What is wrong with this picture? When will the pendulum reach its crest?

Thanks Mike for your ” I have a black friend comment” about Braylon Edwards. You like them as long as they are not playing QB. You bigots are transparent and shallow. You do understand what those words mean correct? Your SAT was probaly around 400 or so right Bubba??

I don’t mind criticism, but make sure that it is fair.

Mike your trailer must not get a good TV reception. The last 5 weeks Vick has had a higher passer rating than any QB in the NFL except for Payton Manning. The more we talk the more idiotic you sound. Take off your hood with the eyes cut out and go to a sports bar and watch the games. The bus system does work on sunday’s right?

Its funny how these bashers wake up when the team loses. When they were winning i didn’t see half of these so called football experts. How can you read a defense when you have no time in the pocket? What has Matt Schaub done to prove he is better than Vick? Matt is completing under 50% of his passes but for some reason the bashers on here think he is the next big thing. GET REAL. If you guys hate Vick so much why do you watch the games then come on here and blog?

I don’t need help crazy b, i’m just telling it like it is, “I KNOW A RACIST WHEN I HEAR ONE” and most of what I am reading is a bunch racist B.S…face the fact the QB position is no longer a white only position and as more talented people play the position it is going to be played differently and you guys cant handle change, the reason you don’t like Vick is because he is a Black Man that has changed the once all white quaterback position….

Crazy B,

If you were in our shoes you have the same outlook that we do. This is bigger than anyone here. Its God’s great scheme not anything that whites had any control over. So please, play your part and sit down.

Oh…You do believe in God don’t you?

Don’t get mad because all the black athletes are taking your white women.

By yea blame vick for everything

Once again our defense makes a rb who was doing nothing the whole season look like a Hall of Famer yet for some odd reason its Vick’s fault they lost the game. I don’t remember seeing Vick miss tackles or applying no pressure what so ever on Delhomme. It’s funny how when the Falcons win it was a team win not just Vick yet when the team loses the bashers only blame Vick. This is ridiculous

I see so when I say Vick sucks i am racist. However, when you say i live in a trailer, have a klan hood, and call me bubba. You are not racist you are just calling it like it is right? Very typical. I guess we should expect that.

You can’t pit this loss on any one person, it was a team loss. Vick sucked, Dunn sucked, Keion sucked, Scott sucked, our o-line sucked, our defense sucked, our playcalling sucked, our coaches preperation sucked, our attitude sucked. Total team loss & we got dominated because of it.

Defensive success and offensive success are related, people. If you look at the games in which the Falcon defense defending the rush well, the Falcon offense sustained long drives - giving them rest and taking time off the clock. Versus TB, even tho they lost, the Falcons offense had 6 drives of 10 plays or more. Against GB? They had ZERO. Against Carolina? They had ONE. whenever the offense cannot sustain drives, the defense gives up 100 yards to a no-name rusher. Its because they know they will get the ball back after a 3 and out by VIck and the offense. Pretty simple. You want to have a better D-line at stopping the run? get an offense that does more than 3-and-out. Everyone is so quick to point out that Vick did not give up 100 yards rushing, yet his play and INABILITY to sustain a drive did.

Why does every topic that people discuss has to always go there. Anyone that even entertains such comments about race are just as unintelligent as the person that brings it up. Let’s all have an intelligent debate. Good Day!!!!

The fact is that Vick is a better athlete than QB. That has pluses and minuses. More disturbing is that the coaching staff has not come to grips with that. When the athlete is not dominating they have no back up plan. That was painfully obvious againt the Panthers. Where is the adaptability? And the longer Vick plays the less he will be able to dominate athletically.

Two more commnets. Duckett is a lard butt and useless. The defense needs a few more athletes. Hall needs to shut up. Brooking at least plays hard and keeps his mouth shut.

Get used to 9-7 and 8-8 given the current situation of players and coaching.

this may seems old to many people because i had bruoght this up before but i cannot for the life of me understand why we have a offensive coordinator who kept insisting on passing the ball to the right side 98 PERCENT of the time??? once again i was force to ” watch” the falcon on the YAHOO play by play. without the benefit of watching live game, i had to read the play by play and i was amased by all those passes to the RIGHT. THE FALCONS PASSES THE BALL TO THE RIGHT ALL BUT THREE TIMES. those three times were completed pasess. what is going on??? is it because vick is a left hander so he has to throw to the RIGHT??? PEOPLE, pay attention the next game, record down how many time he throw to the right and we may have some thing here.

I have noticed that everyone has been commenting about the same people over and over on this site. They are Mike Vick, Keion Carpenter, DeAngelo Hall, Matt Lehr, Kevin McCadam. What do all these people have in common ? Thats right they all went to Virginia Tech (don’t know if any of them graduated, so we will say, “went to that school”) Well, this school is known to choke. They call them the “chokies”. Maybe these people just do the same thing that they did at VT, when a big game comes up, they choke. That is why they have not beaten a team with a winning record yet this year. It was a culture that was developed at VT. Falcon Management should look for players from a winning program with a tradition of winning. So what I am going to bring you for Christmas is a left Offensive guard, a quarterback and a few defensive backs from USC, Texas and Georgia. Merry Christmas
