Georgia, Tech defenders provided thrills
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
As the fellow who had just watched his 56th Georgia-Georgia Tech football game said, taking leave of the press box Saturday near midnight, “This was not one for the ages. Maybe for the aged, but not the ages.”
Even the score lacked personality —14-7 — like a 3-1 score in baseball. Not dull, I give it that. Sluggish offensively, but there was nothing dull about the defense. Amazing that those young bodies could survive some of the crashing hits they took. It was trench warfare without weapons. At least you knew this, that you wouldn’t be seeing Georgia’s Gordon Ely-Kelso taking off on a run from punt formation, if he valued his life.
You must have thought it was never going to get out of the first quarter. Took an hour and 15 minutes, and four reviews from the replay crew. A Broadway musical doesn’t get that many reviews. What I’m saying is, the 56,000-or-so came to the Tech campus expecting so much and getting a yo-yo offensive performance out of both sides kind of let the air out of their balloons. It wasn’t long before their interest waned in trying to interfere with the signal-calling. It was good, though, to see old Bobby Dodd Stadium rocking again, as in the days of the Grant Field original.
Now, as for the featured match between Reggie Ball and D.J. Shockley, it was short of the luster you expected. Ball got his touchdown early, then Shockley got his, and the next 46 minutes was an offensive vacuum. Neither distinguished himself, but the decision obviously went to the senior Shockley, who performed more within himself and kept order in his ranks.
Ball, well, you just don’t know what you’ll get from him, though usually you can count on him taking the game on himself too often. He’ll bring you out of your seat on one play, then send you crashing back on the next. I trust we shall not be subjected to a preseason Heisman Trophy campaign in his behalf next season. When he is good, he is very, very good. When he’s bad, he’ll drive you nuts.
Whether his fault or not, it was significant that Calvin Johnson, with all his ability and the hype, was a factor only when he caught Ball’s 2-yard pass for a touchdown. Give Georgia’s defense a thumbs-up here, and most of it was done with single coverage, mainly by senior DeMario Minter. If there was an unofficial match between him and Leonard Pope, the towering Bulldog, it never developed. The Bulldog sophomore who filled in the blanks for Georgia was Kregg Lumpkin, who turned a cameo appearance into a full night running the ball. He had gained only 156 yards all season. Against Tech he ran for 74 yards and kept the offense alive with chunks of yardage.
This rivalry never has brought out the best in Ball, beginning with his year as a freshman, when he had an encounter on the Georgia sideline, then disappeared from the game the last half. Then there was the fourth-down miscalculation in Athens last year, and he was not to escape this time. He delivered the fatal blow when he was intercepted by Tim Jennings as the end approached. Georgia had gone ahead on Shockley’s touchdown pass to Bryan McClendon, finally, now Tech had moved swiftly down to Georgia’s 11-yard line in reprisal when the Yellow Jackets’ night came to a disastrous end.
“We were getting ready for overtime,” Gerris Wilkinson, the senior linebacker, said. “Fourteen points should not be enough to beat us.”
But alas, it was. Mark Richt is still unscathed in this old series. But let’s get one point across here: It is not a series of 12 in a row, as ballyhooed over the radio, referring to Georgia Tech’s sentence by the NCAA. “Vacated” does not mean defeat. “Vacated” simply erases the game from the books. It was never played, in other words. This one was, and Georgia won fair and square.

Furman,
The reason the UGA broadcast said twelve in a row is that Georgia won the seven before the vacated games and the five after them. They did not count the vacated games as wins. 7 + 5 = looks like 12 to me!

I have to agree with the other comments. You are showing your well known bias. If the score had been reversed, your article would have sung the praises of the game as one of the series’ best. I have great respect for you, but disagree with your opinion. Go Dawgs!!!

From War Eagle Central: The NCAA ruling says only for GT to vacate their record books of these games. All other schools involved are to keep their records as was. The 3 games in question still remain in your record books as a loss. Just be glad you arent going to take another whippin from us Saturday. SEC WEST RULES

It’s comforting to know some things never change….. UGA didn’t count the 1943 and 1944 losses to GT and now they won’t count the 1998, 1999 and 2000 losses. Give those PR types over in Athens enough time and they’ll have a 100-0 series advantage. Luckily Neil (sp?) Williamson is the only media hack willing to make such an ignorant comment as to say UGA has won 12 straight. I guess if that case you should fire Richt and hire back Donnan since he didn’t really lose those three games to GT.
Also, I find it ironic that many of you would claim Furman has a GT bias when the ranks of the AJC are filled with UGA graduates many of whom most certainly are unable to contain their own biases. One article not singing the praises of UGA and the masses are up in arms. Please. BTW, congratulations to UGA on a hard fought victory on Saturday night. Both defenses played incredible.

It is always good to read your columns here in Maryville, where Rocky Top got even rockier this year!
Now, re: your comments on the Tech-Ga. game, this old Korean War veteran is still hurt when he sees the terms: “trench warfare” used in the game of football…it just doesn’t belong.

War Eagle Jimmy — I live in Montgomery — Most Auburn fans are glad they don’t have to play Georgia again — Either way guess Auburn still doesn’t make it to the SEC title game — Besides a lot of us root for Auburn — after all 25 percent of the kids are from Georgia — That’s what makes it so exciting for Auburn — Big game for them to come home and try to beat in home state school every year — Not so for Georgia — we have to many high school players in state — Guess that is why, most of the other schools come to work in Georgia (Atlanta) not enough high tech jobs — Shucks — I bet you work in Atlanta!

Yes indeed,Georgia has kicked Tech again. And they should. How do you ever expect to have a REAL football program if you can’t even defeat Tech. And yes Richts plays are weird sometimes but his faith left him not this past saturday night. And Auburn, though they have a problem beating Tech, their running game is dangerous, and it looks like it is getting better. Be on the lookout for Steve S next year—like it or not he is back—Go doggies.

Coaching not to lose rather than to win is what we will see from now on from Mark. Again this man trying to pass as a coach was miserable on the sideline. I hope that Bobby Bowden retires soon so Mark can go back to FSU and we can get a coach who knows how to fire up his players to win. LSU will run wild as Mark tries not to lose by too many points.

No need to alienate an Auburn fan who had a great point of view.
I’m proud that we beat them, and also glad we won’t play them again. They are the best team in the SEC IMHO.
Thanks Furman, for always being respectful in your criticism. Don’t know if you are a fan or not, but you are a professional at a newspaper where certain others are not able to contain their biases.
UGA is a good team. We got beat. Not sure it would happen twice if we could have them again next Saturday, though.
3 - count them - 3 uncalled blocks in the back on the punt return helped a whole lot. The horse collar hold not called on a blitzing KaMichael Hall helped also.
The line judge even ignored Blue’s clothesline interference/personal foul on Calvin Johnson until the back judge ‘finally’ threw the flag. And somehow GT had an illegal reciever down field, who is a receiver. Maybe illegal formation - not illegal reciever downfield.
Be proud if you want to be Dawg fans. You won. Breaks happen. We got a couple against Miami.
Don’t talk garbage though. You got all you want, and needed help to get out.
I don’t know at what point D1 schools will start taking legal action against referees who cost them - literally - hundreds of thousands of dollars in bowl payouts because of, what I believe, is blatantly biased calls.
Corporations would never put up with it. I don’t know why a D1 football program, which is it’s own multimillion dollar corporation, would either.
I’m tired of watching what a poor ref can do to a game. It’s amazing how hard they tried to get everything right in the first quarter. The 4th was very different story.
Chan Gailey isn’t allowed to say it, but I sure will.
Dawg fans - never come to a place like the AJC - of all places - and accuse anyone of being biased against you. You get so many breaks that the Sanks fumble is ‘still’ your biggest problem.
By techfowl
November 28, 2005 09:38 AM | Link to this
Perfect example.
The AJC ran a series showing the still frames of the Sanks fumble.
Let’s see if they publish the still frames of the THREE uncalled blocks in the back on the punt return.
They won’t.
Life’s not fair. I’m fine with that. Just don’t get handed the majority of the breaks, and then whine to a GT fan about the one you didn’t get.

Illegal receiver or illegal formation-both are penalties that would take the play away. As for holding, it wasn’t called much on either side of the ball though there were several instances where it played a prominent role in the outcome. The problem for Tech is that Reggie let too many dawgs get between himself and his Calvin!!

Listen Tech fans if you want to give excuses on officiating or breaks Georgia got here’s one for you; If the Dawgs receivers would have caught 50% of the dropped passes they would have beaten you by 21 points instead of just 7. You lost…. again. Deal with it!

HEY TECHFOWL:
Your a moron if you think GT was the only one getting NO CALLS from the refs. On the first 2 series (including GT’s touchdown drive) there were at least 7 plays with blatant holds by the GT linemen. They were as obvious as day. Call those holds and the Dawgs shut you guys out completely.
Bad calls went both ways. Just take the loss like a man and not like a half-man, pocket protector, geek wad who mixes his beer with tomato juice so that its not so strong.

Having said that TECHFOWL is a big weeny, I do want to say that Tech gave us a hell of a game. And Bisher was right about one thing: that was the loudest Nerd Field has been in a long time (and not just because of all the Dawg fans). Tech showed up. Tech fans showed up. And it was a fun game.
Still, over 30% of the fans were UGA fans. GT how do you let that happen at a GT home game? I mean our defensive players were waving their arms to get the fans pumped up AND IT WORKED! That’s how many UGA fans there were.
That’s funny.
Again though, it was a good game.

It’s now called “playing not to lose” when you don’t go for it on 4th and 1 at your own 40 yard line in the first quarter. You young pups would have hated to watch Dodd and The Bear coach. They never took chances that could put their teams in peril. I saw Bear punt many times down by 1 with two minutes left on the clock…and win the game to boot. How anyone could be so ignorant as to suggest that Richt is a bad coach is beyond me. But, the same fools did it to Mack Brown at Texas and Tubberville at Auburn. Richt did just what he needed to do. He patiently waited and let Reggie beat himself. The MTV generation is turning college football into a instant gratification media circus and that’s a damned shame.
By socaldawg
November 28, 2005 11:29 AM | Link to this
Ben, I’m just guessing here that you aren’t an UGA fan. It really has nothing to do with instant gratification. It’s about things like having your average speed back up QB run the ball on 3rd and 13 instant of attempt a pass that has a realistic chance of getting a first down. Us UGA fans have been saying this ever since Richt’s first year, when Tubbyville told Richt you have to be able to run to win in the SEC. It’s not that we want him to go for it on 4th and 1 every time. It’s that we want him to play big once in a while. We never blow out an opponent (except for a not too long ago GT game). And it’s becuase we get a 10 point lead and start playing soft ball.
We all are glad to have Richt over Donnan or Ray Goof. But that doesn’t mean the man is beyond criticism. He says so himself.

socaldawg, just reminding you that it’s not hard to fall into a coaching abyss like Note Dame, Alabama or Texas once did. In Tech’s case, if you hate Chan so much, try 4-7 for five years in a row and you’ll be begging to bring him back.

Great article Furman - as always! To all the Dawg fans - it WAS a great game and the loudest I’ve ever heard Grant Field. The Dawg fans in Section 101 were fun, gracious and obnoxious all in one - as it should be. Congratulations. AS for the officials - both teams have reason to be upset at the delays in the first period, the non-calls, the calls that shouldn’t have happened, and the lusy flow of the game. They were horrible, but that’s what we get every year from our league administrators. Chan Gailey coached his normal game, score early and turn it over to the defense. Then when our backs are against the wall we are forced to make plays and can’t get it done. It’s happened now for 4 years and thanks to Braineless, we can watch it for another 6 years before the rebuilding can begin. We had absolutely nothing to lose Saturday night and everything to gain (Gator Bowl) and old Chan is afraid to pull the trigger. You’re right Chan - most offensive coordinators are trying to get stats so they can become a head coach and you’re a head coach still trying to be an offensive coordinator. I’ve seen enough -

364 - The number of days of peace the Georgia fans should have until we whip the buzzes again. Tech fans all have the “little man” complex… they are all about trying to keep up with the big Dawgs. They complain they are “done wrong, and it is not their fault.” They want to throw up any small feat in the face of a UGA fan to stir up trouble. My advice to them - after 5 consecutive years - shut up until you have something relevant to discuss…we care even less about your ½ share of a the 1990 National Championship than you care about our COMPLETE 1980 National Championship.
If you notice, we don’t keep up with how many times we have beaten you, because it happens often enough that it is not important. And, don’t talk to me about who else is on our schedule that has beaten us – if you focus on the real battle, beating us, maybe you will be able to have some success. Well, not really, but you should strive for something. Don’t complain about officiating, because they are equally as bad on both sides of the ball. We have been the recipient of their inadequacies all year. Be thankful that you have only had to deal with them once.
Finally – is there anyone that is a “TECH FAN that actually attended Georgia Tech?? I find when I ask, “And, when did you attend Tech? the answer is almost always a stuttering, “Uh, I didn’t but I am a HUGE Tech fan. Whatever. I think the typical Tech student/graduate doesn’t even know that football exists and if they do, could care less. I think “Tech Fans are just people that cannot get into Georgia and are spiteful and bitter so they cheer for Tech to make themselves feel better.
At any rate, they can spend the next few months gathering their pitiful insults so they will be ready to defend their team. The problem is there is nothing to defend. Georgia fans don’t even CARE about Tech until the Turkey is in the oven. This game is now just a diversion for when we need some relief from After Thanksgiving shopping.
What is most ironic is that I interact daily with Auburn, Florida, Tennessee, South Carolina, Mississippi State, and Ole Miss fans, am married to an Alabama graduate, and the only people that can’t get a grip are the Tech Fans. The SEC fans have much better teams year in and year out and have much more at stake, yet it is the Tech people that just won’t shut up. Do us all a favor and SHUT UP already! You don’t even have basketball anymore do you? How about that Illinois-Chicago team?

Herschel:
Since you are correcting everyone’s grammer, do you care to explain why you used an apostrophe when you (incorrectly) typed “laborer’s”?
That apostrophe would only be needed to indicate the laborer’s (correctly used) possesion of something. What exactly are you proposing the laborer is possessing?
Of course, what you intended to type was “laborers”. That is the proper way to indicate plurality. No apostrophe is needed.

Hello all!
I’ve been out of town for Thanksgiving, hope everyone had a great one. I see I’ve come in after things have already gotten ugly, oh well such a surprise eh?
My thoughts: I think Pope and Lumpkin were awesome. I think Tech’s defense was amazing to hold off the Ga Juggernaut. You guys have so many awesome recruits every year compared to us, it’s a miracle we hung with you to be honest…we were way out manned. I think our guys over-achieved big time and I’m very proud of them!
I think we need a serious upgrade at QB to take advantage of our recievers and running game. Could you imagine how much better we would be from simply getting the ball to CJ in bounds consistently and in stride, etc?
Grats UGA, we almost pulled off the upset, but you held off the Mighty Yellow Jackets!
We’ll try again next year.
(with the recruiting you guys have working as usual……and the cough recruiting we have going….your sure to be huge favorites again…I’m not wearing blinders…never-the-less…GO JACKETS and THWG!!

Ok dudes, enough ugliness. Yes, we won again but we should. We have several advantages: larger fan and recruiting base and larger budgets to work with. And the streak is at five because, regardless of what is vacated, we lost the games on the field and we all remember how bad it felt.
Don’t forget the 24 hour rule. The Tech game is over for another year and LSU is all that we need to focus on at the moment. We have to find a way to score some points; 14 won’t be enough against our western conference friends.
Defensively we should be in decent shape. Jamarcus (sp?) Russell has a big time arm but is inconsistent and LSU has a tendency to play without discipline on occasion. If we can exploit those things and limit our own mistakes we have a chance. Otherwise, hello Peach Bowl.
To the Tech staff and stadium workers: you were gracious hosts as always. Say what you want about the rivalry, and I want this game more than any on the schedule on a regular basis, you can go to a lot of places and get treated a lot worse than you do at Tech. Compared to many fans, those of UGA’s and Tech’s are generally well behaved and respectful of one another.
Finally, to Paul the horribly obnoxious yet hilarious Tech student in the hideous yellow corduroys: You were great to tailgate with, we are still laughing at the stuff you laid on us. You were going strong by 3:00 P.M. Hope you made it.

I guess the bumblebug fan that said Georgia gets all the breaks did not see the Auburn game this year. 1 Mystery pass interference on a person who was not even getting thrown too, 2 timeouts during a play in which the dogs sacked their QB for a loss, fumble into the endzone that went a few feet from the sideline and just sat their without going out of bounds. Losing DJ for the Florida game. Still put DJ in the FL game and make one play against Auburn and we are undefeated. Breaks indeed. I bet you are one of the tech fans that ran out of the stadium so fast after the Jennings interception, I thought there was bomb threat….

It’s good to see more UGA fans are learning to read.
Another lottery success story!
GO DAWGS (sic) !!!

Herschel S*s— The irony of a moron who has time to post for a couple of hours in the middle of the day commenting on other people who have time to post in the middle of the day is interesting… going to work at 3:00 means you probably work in the exciting world of either retail or fast food.
By the way — The only thing Herschel sucked was the life out of Georgia Tech when he ran through you like you were a bunch of little boys.
And less we forget — 14-7.
