A list sure to unite Dogs, Jackets in anger

Mark Bradley

After a one-year hiatus, our Field Guide to Georgia and Tech Fans returns in all its, uh, glory. Guaranteed to irk both sides. Guaranteed to delight absolutely no one.

*Georgia fans are convinced Mark Richt is the man with the plan. Tech fans are convinced Chan Gailey is a nice man.

*Tech fans suffer from hearing loss due to Wes Durham screaming on the radio after every first down. Georgia fans suffer from hearing loss due to Brook Whitmire screaming over the Sanford Stadium PA system after every first down.

*Georgia fans are wondering if, given that his three losses to Tech have been vacated by NCAA probation, Jim Donnan should get his job back. Tech fans are praying Jim Donnan gets his job back very soon.

*Tech fans believe their school got outmaneuvered in court throughout the Reuben Houston case. Georgia fans believe the rather uncanny Ed Tolley never gets outmaneuvered in court.

*Georgia fans wish Vince Dooley would return as athletics director. Tech fans wish their athletics director a speedy retirement.

*Tech fans think probation is the end of the world. Georgia fans think that if you’re not on probation, you’re not really trying.

*A few Georgia fans are beginning to think Michael Adams isn’t so bad after all. A few Tech fans are beginning to think Wayne Clough has a little Michael Adams in him.

*Tech fans believe Georgia gets better publicity from the local media because the local media is overrun by Georgia grads. Georgia fans believe their school gets better publicity from the local media because Claude Felton is the best in the business.

*Georgia fans wish D.J. Shockley had three more years of eligibility. Tech fans wish they knew exactly how Richt persuaded Shockley to stick around.

*Tech fans want Bill Curry to replace Dave Braine. Georgia fans do not want Bill Curry to replace Larry Munson.

*Georgia fans want Richt to hire a real offensive coordinator. Tech fans want Gailey to hire a real offensive coordinator.

*Tech fans believe Jon Tenuta will be their head coach someday. Georgia fans believed Willie Martinez was a rising star until Devin Aromashodu shook loose on fourth-and-10.

*Georgia fans are thankful Steve Spurrier beat Florida for them. Tech fans are thankful Steve Spurrier didn’t go back to Duke.

*Tech fans are wondering why Bobby Dodd Stadium needed to be enlarged. Georgia fans holding tickets for Saturday’s game are very happy it was.

*Georgia fans have lost track of just how many Bulldogs have been arrested. Tech fans have lost track of just how many ineligible players the Jackets used.

*Tech fans get really excited when Calvin Johnson makes one of his acrobatic catches. Georgia fans will get really excited the first time Johnson gets called for offensive interference.

*Georgia fans love hearing the chapel bell ring after a victory. Tech fans would love it if Travis Bell remembered how to kick a field goal.

*Tech fans wonder why their team can beat Auburn and Miami but not N.C. State and Virginia. Georgia fans wonder why their team can beat Tech but not Auburn.

*The Georgia fan’s most hated rival — Florida, unless Tech happens to win Saturday night, in which case everything would change. The Tech fan’s most hated rival — Georgia, and that’s never, ever subject to change.

I think remark —by someone about Tech not being the team to beat is a bunch of hooey.(sp?) I know not who will fall for that line. But, I’ve been around 52 years on this earth and the truth is: If Richt loses to Tech 2 years in a row, you start hearing wispering. The kind that usually means, can’t we find someone else to coach this Bulldog team. Right on? Enough of the circus talk, its time to show Tech who is boss-10-4.

Very amusing column Mark. There was only a couple of real digs at Georgia and we sort of earned those. Well the illustrious president earned the Dogs probation by forcing his butt buddy and junior on the hoops program.

Ah, in this time of rivalry lets unite and think about one thing. In the last 25 years there has been only two states to have won NCAA championships from multiple schools. Those bastards from Florida and of course the great state of Georgia. I know there has been one school win multipe championships but only two states have had multiple schools win championships. Lets take it a step further. How about the 1980 West Georgia Braves of DIII. And nobody needs to be reminded of what the D-1AA Georgia Southern teams have done. Don’t forget the D-II Valdosta State team of last year. How many states can stake a claim to these credentials. Let’s here it for the state of Georgia football.

Hey, Mark. Do you think that MR really understands that this game with the insects is a must win game. No excuses if he loses. What about a 7-4 record with all of the talent that Ga. puts on the field? I wonder if he’s sent a thank you letter to let him know he appreciates his getting us into the Championship game(Spurrier)It’s his team and if he wants to be stubborn that’s his decision to make. 7-4, you think fans will be happy with that?

While I appreciate the humor, cracks made about the performance of certain players, on either side, are not appropriate. Take shots at the administrations, coaching staffs, boosters, and radio announcers all you want, but lay off the athletes. They’ re not getting paid to be there … at least not at Tech.

Fun times, fun times. No matter which side you support, does any week of the year make your blood boil as much as the week leading up to a UGA-Tech game, listening to the other side moan and brag and bring up old news? Well, I supposed the 51 weeks after a loss are bad Fun times, fun times. No matter which side you support, does any week of the year make your blood boil as much as the week leading up to a UGA-Tech game, listening to the other side moan and brag and bring up old news? Well… I suppose the 51 weeks after a loss are bad as well.

Honestly, here is hoping it’s a good game, close to the end, and the only team to beat a top 10 school this year comes away with the win.

A few points:

— I used to work in the same business as Mark, so I can tell you this with certainty: Claude Felton and the gang at UGA are, without a doubt, the very best in the world if you’re a sports writer. And, as an aside, the food in the press box isn’t bad, either. — I hope both teams play well this weekend. I don’t care who wins, since I covered both teams a few years ago. I just hope it’s a good game. Football in this state is as good as anywhere, whether you’re talking high school or college. — I don’t know about Gailey’s long-term future, but a win Saturday really helps matters. — Richt is at Georgia for quite a while, but his playcalling leaves something to be desired. — I wouldn’t have played Houston last week, but that’s my decision.

After Saturday, let’s saw we adopt my view and root for both teams, UGA in the SEC title game and, hopefully, the Sugar Bowl, and, Tech, in its bowl game.

By MIke

November 23, 2005 11:19 PM | Link to this

Hey Magellan(Tech Fan)- Are you talking about Mercer or Georgia College? Those are the only 2 colleges in the middle of the state. UGA is the Northeast part of the state. You guys are a real bunch of scholars over there.

And by the way - he still screwed up using his slide rule. “OOPS! your right, so he can match his 1st year record of 8-4. If the DAGWS lose 4 of their last 5 will everyone be happy?” Listen Einstein - look at a freakin’ schedule before trying to be funny would you? We only have 3 games left, so your hypothesis is not only ludicrous, it’s also impossible. Leave the smarts to the boys from the “state school”. We obviously get more out of our time in school than you clowns.

This so-called rivalry is very similar to another so-called rivalry of Boston College and Notre Dame. ND plays their seasons for national championships while BC plays to spoil somebody’s season, hopefully ND’s. Same with Tech. Most years, Tech is playing to spoil somebody’s season, hopefully Georgia’s, while Georgia is playing for championships with the Tech game a pimple in the way.

Georgia fans are wondering if, given that his three losses to Tech have been vacated by NCAA probation, Jim Donnan should get his job back.

Actually, Tech’s vacated games have no effect on our opponent’s records, so while we may not have officially beaten ugag 3 years in a row, Donnan and Co. certainly lost to Tech 3 years in a row.

Any journalist worth a grain of salt would know that. But wait, we’re talking UGA, I mean, AJC, sportswriters…

As a UGA alum, let me assure you of the hate we have for the insects. Nats. Slide-rule jockies. Nerds. “georgia tech”; just hearing the two words draws hatred from the soul. The nats are a most nauseating group of misfits the world has ever seen. This same group that mocks the party habits of UGA students is the same that has, as a song favorite, the “Bud” tune. Odd. The nats are a sick group. And its football team is not going to stay any closer than 17 points to a much stronger, more intelligent, more physical University of Georgia Bulldogs team. The turning point of the game Saturday night? The kickoff. To Hell with georgia tech! GO YOU HAIRY DAWGS AND GATA!

Georgia has played for SEC championships but not a national championship since the glory days of H Walker (bought and paid). I believe that was in the 80’s. I do recall that Tech won a national championship in ‘90. Oooh that has to hurt a little. Finally, Tech has the aspirations of being a football school. Arrested players, probabation…we are now where GA was 20 years ago. The future is bright…now you have to add the arrested column to the recruiting column. GT most recent arrest would get a 4 star rating unlike most of our recruits, GA’s past arrest records probably only get 2 and 3 stars, except for that brief try with that Basketball coach the President insisted on hiring; 5 stars there. As for M Bradley, much read his than T Moore who simply writes, not what he believes but just things that stir controversy. Speaking of T Moore, what a fair weathered fanl fan, only likes the better teams in any sport.

Mutt U, playing for championships. Make me barf. When you catch up with Tech’s championships let us know. We have more and more recent. Learn your history idiot!

Let’s look at awards and history. Best coach award, named for a Tech coach. Best player, named for a Tech coach. Highest score ever. Tech. More national championships, Tech. I think we still have more SEC championships than you mangy, flea-bitten inbred mutts and we haven’t played in the conference in about 30 years.

Chan and Houston, I believe a judge ORDERED Tech to reinstate him to the team, against the wishes of both the team, coach, and administration. Is there some part of a judge’s order you don’t understand?

And don’t get me started about intelligence or academics. While Tech players, yes even management majors, are taking calculus; UGAg players are trying to figure out “How many points is a 3 point shot worth?”

Now Mutts fans and students, get back to work. I need my french fries now and my garbage hasn’t been picked up yet this week.

I love this column that Bradley writes. I actually have the first one that I requested in an e-mail from him. Every year it pegs me almost exactly on how I feel with Tech. I’ll keep this same theme. Braine is out of touch with the normal Tech fan however Bradley seems to be in touch them. Also, I think Tech fans hope that they win because of UGA fans arrogance. UGA fans know they will win because they are arrogant.

Lewis Grizzard once played a round of golf with a couple of Techies. He was nice, cracked jokes and made them feel welcome. After the round, he told them “Fellas this has been fun, but we can’t be friends. You see, I have a policy that has served me well. I only allow myself to have 5 Tech friends at a time, and right now, my list is full. But if you want to leave me your number, I will call you if anything happens to one of the other guys.” With that, and with a straight face, he got in his car and drove away.

I suppose you LIKE losing? UGA/Florida games must really be great for you. A little good-natured smack talk is part of the rivalry. (Muttpf took things a little far…) Losing is bad, losing to UGA is well, there are no words for that feeling. I didn’t start the history discussion, I just presented the facts. Now, back to watching the Falcons. (Hard to pull for them today, they’re wearing red and black…). And BTW, you missed some weeds in my yard, be more careful next time you cut the grass. Hey Yell’0. for a tech man, I would usually defer to your mathematical skills. For obvious reasons I must assume you are good at math, otherwise, what do you have in life?

However, you apparently can’t count all that well. Tech’s overall winning percentage is .594 versus a UGA winning % of .640, which as I understand mathematics, gives UGA a lead in all time wins.

The series between UGA and GT gives us a GT winning percentage of .409. Now, how the wins you have to vacate for cheating plays in, I don’t know, but I don’t imagine it improves your %.

Again I love the scholar-athlete arguments since we all know Reggie Ball is an obvious example of a tremendous student as well as athlete. Hmm, maybe your school cheats to allow students to remain eligible?? Nah, that wouldn’t happen would it?

When will Tech ever be a serious contender for the ACC championship again? My guess is a long time. Every three years or so, we are serious contenders for National Championship. When is the last time that Tech has been ranked in the top five, make that top ten? I can’t recall. Wake me up or dig me out of my grave when Tech is a serious contender for the ACC or National championship. Since 1975, even with the vacated games, we’re still 22-8 and 22-6 without them. Also, Tech only won 2 ACC crowns ever!

correction, I meant 22-5 instead of 22-6.

LESSONS LEARNED FROM LOSING

Thanksgiving week is so much more fun when Georgia Tech at least has a shot at beating Georgia in football. There have been plenty of years when the whole state has known exactly what was going to happen to Tech the Saturday after Turkey Day. The Yellow Jackets were going to get clobbered by the Bulldogs. The short-lived Bill Lewis era in the mid-90s comes to mind. But not this year. After Tech’s stunning upset of Miami, observers on both sides of the fence agree that this year’s game has all the makings of a classic battle between brothers, cousins, friends and enemies. This is the one football game of the year that means the most to me personally. I was born a Tech fan because my Daddy went to Tech. And then I went to college there, so now I’m forever hitched to the White and Gold. But why do I care so much about one game? Why is it that this game is the only thing I’ve been able to think about all week? These are just a bunch of 19- and 20-year-old kids playing a game, for goodness sake. Why does it matter so much? The short answer: Because I’m a huge sports fan and my team is the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. And in Southern states like Georgia, college football matters. This year I read Warren St. John’s book, “Rammer Jammer Yellow Hammer. It’s a wonderfully, descriptive and insightful account of the fan mania that grips University of Alabama football. (One couple even missed their daughter’s wedding because she scheduled it on the day of the Alabama-Tennessee game.) St. John writes that “being a sports fan is largely about learning to cope with losing. I know that if Tech loses Saturday my 8-year-old son, Wages, will probably cry. And I will feel like crying. We’ve lost four in a row to Georgia and losing streaks stink. The most devastating, heartbreaking Tech loss to Georgia that I’ve ever witnessed in person was the 1997 game in Atlanta. Tech had lost six in a row to Georgia but faced a realistic chance of snapping the drought thanks to a stingy defense and a young quarterback named Joe Hamilton. It was a cold, rainy night at Bobby Dodd Stadium. I went to the game with my mother. Just the two of us — Mom and me — taking in a Tech-Georgia football game together. As the drama of the game unfolded, it looked like Tech would win as the Jackets scored a touchdown very late in the fourth quarter to take a 24-20 lead. Mom and I were giddy as we hugged each other. Larry Munson barked into the radio, “They’ve ripped our hearts out and the blood is pouring down the streets of Atlanta. But with less than a minute to play, Georgia stormed down the field led by the leadership of quarterback Mike Bobo and All-American Champ Bailey. With Georgia now on Tech’s 15-yard line with 15 seconds left in the game, the Jackets’ Tavares Tillman stepped in front of a Bobo pass for an interception. Mom and I went crazy! But wait, there’s a flag! Pass interference. Georgia gets another play. And then the heartbreaker. Bobo lobs a pass to wideout Corey Allen in the corner of the end zone for the winning touchdown with 8 seconds left. Dawgs won for the seventh time in a row, 27-24. Munson screamed: “We’ve picked our hearts up and we’ve stuffed them back in our chest. That was a sick feeling walking out of the stadium with Mom. We were stunned and crestfallen. But something about losing in such dramatic fashion filled me with a sense of perspective and appreciation for what really matters in life. All of a sudden, I wasn’t sad anymore. I had just attended an incredible game with my mother. I’ll never forget that experience and the fact that I was there with Mom. In his book, “My Losing Season, Pat Conroy writes that winning is wonderful, but the “darker music of loss resonates on deeper, richer planes. Loss is a fiercer, more uncompromising teacher, cold-hearted but clear-eyed in its understanding that life is more dilemma than game, and more trial than free pass. I’ve had enough losing lessons in my life. I’m ready to learn from winning.

Mrs. Greer…Since when has UGA been a contender for a National Championship (every three years or so)??? I guess this year was one of those years too, huh? It’s not how you start but how you finish. Please reserve National Championship talk to years when UGA wins the SEC Championship…or every 20+ years or so. Blah, Blah, Blah, “UGA beats Tech, UGA this, UGA that…” How about this…4 National Championships to 1 National Championship. Again…it’s how you finish….

Georgia fans believe their school gets better publicity from the local media because Claude Felton is the best in the business.

YEAH RIGHT! GET A CLUE MARK. WINNING BREEDS PUBLICITY, NOT AN SID WHO DOESN’T HELP HIS OWN STUDENTS.
