Tech channels chaos into surprise win
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Miami — So is this what it takes? Get slapped upside the head with probation. Have a head coach’s approval rating dip to presidential proportions. Take so many blows from the public that you’re punch drunk before you even go to the airport for the team flight?
Is that all it takes for Georgia Tech to put together one of the most inspirational performances in recent — and not-so-recent — history?
“Not one of you thought this would happen!” Chan Gailey said Saturday. “Not one of you!”
That would be correct, sir.
Georgia Tech won a football game Saturday night, 14-10, over Miami.
Right. If it only was that simple.
Gailey suffered a heart attack in March, underwent an angioplasty and made a full recovery to coach this season.
This doesn’t compare to that.
It just finishes ahead of everything else.
This was supposed to be an off week. But the Oct. 22 game against Miami was postponed because of a hurricane and suddenly the potential off week became a week in Hades.
The thought occurred that if ever a weeklong therapy session was needed, this was the time. Consider this four-punch combination: Gailey, having played to mixed reviews with the fan base, got a new five-year contract; athletics director Dave Braine, in coming to Gailey’s defense, was just a little too honest about his modest expectations for the program; Reuben Houston, suspended because he’s facing felony drug charges, was forced back onto the team by a misguided Fulton County judge, who seems to forget that playing college sports is not a right but a privilege. And then there was probation, the first in school history.
My kingdom for a Seconal.
Saturday’s meeting with Miami didn’t seem to be set up as a game as much as a sacrifice. But the Jackets didn’t get the memo.
“We’re the only ones who thought this could happen,” defensive end Eric Henderson said. “But we’re the only ones who had to think this could happen.”
They beat the No. 3 team in the nation. That’s all.
Their offense scored on its first possession against the No. 1 defense in the country. That’s all.
Their defense registered seven sacks, held the Hurricanes to 237 yards in total offense and to 1-of-14 on third-down conversions. That’s all.
Through nine games, it didn’t seem to most that Gailey had provided the clear improvement Braine wanted. Gailey got the new deal anyway. Then came Saturday’s upset. These things don’t always happen in order.
How emotional was this for the maligned Gailey?
“It’s up there,” he said. “I don’t know if it [ranks] one or two or three or six. But it’s definitely up there.”
Time after time, Tech’s defense came up big. Miami was stuffed on five consecutive possessions after Reggie Ball’s 16-yard touchdown run gave the Jackets the lead in the third quarter. With eight minutes left in the game, Miami had a third-and-1 at the Jackets’ 12. But running back Charlie Jones was stuffed for consecutive losses.
The ‘Canes got the ball back again with 2:37 left. They drove the ball from their own 11 to the Tech 27. But then Dennis Davis intercepted a Kyle Wright pass at the Jackets’ 3.
Um. What just happened?
This was not a Miami team devoid of incentive. It had lingering national title hopes. It had an eight-game winning streak since a season-opening loss to Florida State. One more victory and the rematch with the Seminoles in the ACC title game would be set. Now Miami is hoping North Carolina can knock off Virginia Tech.
I would say that can’t possibly happen, but …
“We heard the stuff all week,” said running back Tashard Choice.
“We knew what everybody was saying. We just didn’t pay attention to it. We got ready to play a football game. We believe.”
Miami will look for excuses. Maybe the ‘Canes were just numb from their own problems. A 2-year-old raunchy rap video surfaced this week, featuring several former and current players.
But that just doesn’t compare to the week on The Flats, and this game didn’t compare to anything in recent memory.
This team can take a punch.

It’s 2:00 AM…I can’t sleep cause I’m literally still in shock.
I’ll never ever forget this night: the night “Little” Reggie Ball and the Tech D took it to Miami in the Orange Bowl.
Words cannot describe the feeling this gives us true Tech fans.

Wow that was an amazing game! I’m still in shock myself and this game goes down as one of the greatest games in recent history. Tech did everything they needed to do to win the game. The defense really pulled through and the offense wasn’t too shabby either. Wow and to think we are one catch from being 8-2 right now. I just wish this effort was present all the time. I mean we dominated Miami at Miami. How many teams can say that? And those little pups better be prepared next weekend because Tech is gonna bring it again. I can see them getting scared already. Go Jackets!

I love it. Huge win. Great wins this season against Auburn and Miami on the road. Say what you want about Gailey, but he has two huge wins this season and Mark Richt has ZERO (Tennesse road win isn’t very impressive when Vanderbilt does the same thing and UT finishes with a losing record). Can’t wait for the pups. If only we were in the SEC East instead of the ACC Coastal.

yes, this one tastes great after having to defend the tradition of the black and gold this week from the miscreant taz anderson vultures that got hung up on semantics and tried to take down an institution, two good men and a program that is bigger than they are. how many detractors have their been this week. you all got on the bandwagon of a public hanging and may have missed one of the greatest victories in tech history. you may not even be able to enjoy this one because of your outburst and cry. if that is so it is all because of the silly illusions that you created in that ego driven mind of yours.
tech football has and will always be about integrity first, then getting it done right and accepting the consequences of that without any excuses or lies. really the reuben story in a way parallels this week of infamy for the institution as it has to live down the consequences of cutting corners or taking silly liberties. any tech engineer knows that cant be done without the house of cards falling in. for years we watched as others did it and finally thought maybe the victories were worth the price so we could build this big stadium that our beloved coach o’leary wanted and then left for a more important suitor. maybe if we spent the money right we could add a taz wing to the dressing room with what was left over. i for one was not impressed about those interests because that is about the ego.
today was about the heart of tech. i was and am tremendously impressed with this team even in its losses and what it has accomplished with little more than heart and a few really great players. today two missed field goals didnt do us in nor was there a pass that was one foot away from perfection to only be intercepted. that is all it has been from a truly great year, that of maybe reaching that sanctimonious number of nine wins that some decried was the true evidence for greatness instead of mediocrity.
the little man who was so brave to have taken the field less than two weeks out of the hospital for meningitis to be derided by the ignorant came through ignoring once again his own slight stature. he takes what is given to him and through athletism does it. he sort of reminds me of those little backs that always did the job for bobby dodd in those years that were so good. it was said dodd liked them because they didnt slip in the mud. maybe there was a glimpse at stan gann. maybe furman will take us back there at some point this year and make that comparison.
i hate to remind folks but having lived it the dodd years were not as great as those seemed to think it this week when everyone was agast that tech couldnt win 9 or 10 games a year, every year. lets not even bring up the years from 66 to 90 that were miserable. go back and look it up. dodd’s teams after the 51 national championships were good but not great with a few teams winning 9 from that year to his retirement. face it back then the schedule wasnt as tough as todays having only to play tn, auburn, ala, and ga but usually not all in the same year. rarely was the table run against that lineup and when they all came in the same year we had to wonder if we could win more than 6. we knew we were going to be underdogs against those teams. tech also played in an unbalanced sec that rarely had the east meet the bad boys of lsu, ole miss and the hogs in the west. florida was a joke having one of dodds ex-assistants ray graves have to go there to help them turn it around.
todays vistory was special but it brought back memories of the occasional big upset that seemed to occur every few years. the great victory of 6 to 3 against namath’s first bama team comes to mind. it was such a great game that was won in the dodd way and came out of the blue against the undefeated tide, featuring mud and field position. of course the game had several third down punts in the way the great gambler dodd would do it to make sure that the game wasnt given up because of the exchange between the punter and his center on a wet day. dodd im sure did a few rolls tonight as he watched bell take the last few snaps in the shotgun with the game still in balance.
quite a victory tech nation, it is a shame we have to experience it so divided. hopefully, this will have awakened the silly few that thought they knew the tech way, especially, you that were sort of on the fence and duped earlier in the week. if nothing else it will send you to your hole for a while.
face it the only thing mediocre this week were those ranting of it. they never saw this coming and they just didnt get it and probably wont. they have their own agendas but it isnt techs, thankfully.
what a great day.

I have to be honest, this win was as much a shock to me as Gailey’s contract extension or Dave Braine’s brainless comments (which look even worse now).
Just hope they can repeat the feat and keep the intensity up for next week.

I SAY IT’S GREAT TO BE A YELLOW JACKET!
Funny thing is, all the Tech fans have forgotten about the week from hell. I want to give our guys credit, great game.
I was a very big Chan opponent, but I have to say: Chan, welcome to at least 5 more years.
This was a great win four our program, our recruits, our school, but most: OUR PLAYERS.
I wish we had a way to honor them, GO JACKETS!

As someone who isn’t a died in the wool Tech fan, I think this was one of the greatest victories in Tech History. Beating Miami in Miami happens about once every 10 years and the Tech Family pulled together after a horrible week off the field. Congratulations to the whole Tech Team and a very hardy well done to the Coaching staff for a brilliant game plan.

Good win Jackets. Could’ve done without Chan Chan’s Rodney Dangerfield “I can’t get no respect” routine after the game. No Chan, people don’t expect you to beat Miami after you lose to NC State and Virginia.
But don’t get your hopes up. Tech will come out as flat as the ground the school is on and Georgia will win, oh, 51-7. That’s a good number to remember.

The much-maligned Gailey now has two road wins in one season against teams that are better than anyone O’Leary ever beat.
Honestly it seems to me those two wins are better than any two Tech has had since Dodd paced the sidelines. Auburn and Miami will both be in the top ten of the final polls.
Also, there goes the popular theory that the Tech win over Auburn was an early season fluke that couldn’t happen now.

well, as a certified chan canner, i have to say congratulations chan….a great win…….unbelievable performance by the players after all that’s gone on this week…….great performance by the offense against a great D ( and they caught a couple of deserved breaks with penalties nullifying reggie INT’s)…….choice had a great game with PJ on the sidelines and CJ again showed why tech should throw the ball his way as much as possible (reggie needs to work all week on downfield throws)….if he could just get his passes in the vicinity of CJ, bilbo, and clark GT might actually connect on ‘bombs’…… and i think chan’s play calling, mixing it up kept the miami D confused just enough…….an incredible game by the D ( are they working on tenuta’s extension?) which came up with huge stops time after time and I loved the sackfest…….just one question…..what’s up with using the shotgun and running QB sweeps, risking a fumble, to run out the clock? Now, about next week……Go Jackets!

To Tman: the Tech/Bama score was 7 to 6.
Tired of hearing that the NC State game came down to the late interception… if Travis Bell hadn’t missed two 22 yard chip shots and NC State hadn’t clicked on two fluke long plays during an otherwise stellar Tech defensive effort, Tech would have beaten them soundly. But, over the course of a long season, bad breaks can and do beat you. (It evened out in the Clemson game…which I would rather win anyway.)
I am SO PROUD of the team and the coaches.

Great post Golden Tornado!
Great win GT! The biggest since the 1990 win at #1 UVA.
Things (even before the Miami win) are better than we seem to realize. GT has secured it’s ninth straight winning season which has not been done since we had seventeen straight from 1908-1925. Not even Dodd had nine straight winning seasons.

REMOVE MONKEY, INSERT VICTORY, PLACE A CROWN ON CHAN GAILEY!
True Tech fans will never forget this one. Not since Sisson beat UVA has there been a W this big, and what about timing. This is the greatest story in sports this year, better than the Braves farm system, greater than the UGA hype (who have the beaten with a winning record, TO HELL WITH GEORGIA!), greater than anything Mike Vick has done for the Falcons this year. Tech just beat the team that holds the longest home winning streak in the history of college football, a team with epic talent, a team that had annihilated its previous opponents, a team that “could not be stopped by anybody” (LOU HOLTZ). And then came Tech, off the worst week of media bashing and quasi-fan bashing in the history of the Institution (The I as we now can be called since Miami was The U). They came with the class, coached by one of the classiest men left in this game who had just took a beating for being a winning coach over the term of his contract. This story could go on and on and should live in the minds of Atlanta sport fans, David has beaten Goliath, again!!!

Jeff, great column even though the subject matter itself was a little boring.
tornado, that last part was joke and congrats on the win. Should make for a spirited week leading up to the big showdown. Your post was very insightful as well even if some of its meanings were lost on this Dogs fan. I think I read some obscure references to Lothridge and Snow in there but, I’m not sure. What were you doing up at 2:46 for anyway?
Nobody is giving credit where it is due of course, which is to the ghost of Dodd. The events of the week started ole Bobby spinning in his grave on Tuesday and kept building. By Saturday, his spirit being able to take no more upsetting news, rose up and consumed Miami like a Cat5 storm. I can only hope for the Classic City’s sake that his spirit has now been sufficiently placated and is again resting peacefully.

stand corrected on the score. my memory of that game in 62 is weak at 2:30 in the am but i think bama might have gone for two thinking it would have time to get the ball back. the feelig of the game was electric from high in the west stands as the evil bear was defeated for one of the few times by tech that year along with the touted sophomore joe willie. didnt go well the next time he came to town knee injured but threw three quich td’s and sat down.
last nights game really ranks right up there with that game as a historic one that all should be proud for and try to remember in through the years and pull up when i am dead and gone.

I’ve been frustrated throughout Ball’s career with up and down play. He willed the jackets to victory last night. I think he deserves more credit for this win than the press is giving him.

Dobb had over thirty games in win cloum our ties in the early fifties.Taz Anderson needs more respect also. He has done much for GT football. Oleary left us for Notre Dame and we have Chan,as longas the team looks ready to play I will sufferfive more years. Still think we need coordinator foroffense. I give up….who can predict what this team will do next?
I will admit to being a Chan detractor. It hurts my fingers to type the words, but the sum of the effort last night was a masterpiece and Gailey gets the credit. Hats off to Chan for being able to motivate the kids and to keep them focused amidst all of the distractions.
The defense (under a certified Defensive Coordinator, Mr. Tenuta) showed what could be done with an inspired effort. It was an all-time impressive performance.
The offense scored enough points against a rugged Miami defense to tilt the scoreboard our way at the end of the evening. As important, they kept the ball long enough to keep Miami’s O off the field and give our D enough of a breather now and then so that they could maintain their performance. Glad we got Tashard Choice to come back home from OK. Reggie showed that he has the guts and talent that we thought he had when he came in as a true freshman.
How many teams in the nation could have gone into the Orange Bowl and beat a team that the pundits were claiming was possibly the hottest team in the country at this time? I dare say not many.
There are things to say about the performance last night that aren’t glowing, but we can save those for later in the week. Now is the time for long-suffering Tech fans and alumni to savor a victory for the ages. And this one won’t be “vacated”.
My favorite time of year is on us. Turkey and smack talk on Thursday (I share the dinner table with several Dawg fans). They’ve got to be a little more worried this morning than they were yesterday about this time.
Long live the rivalry! To Hell With UGA!

Well, I must go ahead and admit when I’m wrong. Chan does deserve to stay after these two wins. I would love to see more consistency however. Braine I am still no fan of and this dates back to before he made the 9 win comment. I still think GT is out of touch with it’s fan base. They only think about the rich donors that leave the gold seats empty. I did not allow myself to celebrate last night after bashing Gailey and Braine all week. I almost feel confused now. Can somebody please tell me how to feel? Great job Tech you deserve to forget about the 24 hour rule on this one.

Gotta have a little fun!! I had a LOT, a LOT, of fun!! So here goes… :-)Subject: Unbelievable! — GT 14, (formerly number 3 in the nation) Miami 10 Just before kickoff I saw Scully and Mulder conferring with the officials who were mechanically nodding their heads – not so much in agreement as in compliance. On a couple of close-ups of the officials during the game there appeared to be something at the base of their necks that suggested a connecting point or interface of some sort. Also, I noticed that many of the Ga Tech players had the same fixed expression throughout the game — an enigmatic smile I’ve seen somewhere before. And did you see the very brief but bright flash of light late in the fourth quarter? I did a quick count and one of the officials, two Tech players, an a Miami assistant coach were unaccounted for following that event. Hmm…. Let’s hope that the aliens show up in Atlanta next week and that they’re talking with us and not the dawgs!

Damn, if that game wasn’t our own little “Rudy-esque” story. I’m in shock that even the players thought that win was possible. After watching Bama get drilled by Auburn, Tech’s improbable win was just the tonic this household needed.
Defense played a great game. Did anybody notice how sure the tacking was? Our guys took the ball-carrier straight down, no extra yards. Their receivers were dropped once they caught the ball. Great job by all the players and the coaches. Eric Henderson has channeled all the frustration at being injured into becoming a monster.
Big time props to the offense. The O-line kept the running lanes open and kept the D off Reggie’s back. Our receivers had a great game, Tashard had a great game, but this win belongs to Reggie. He ran the ball well and his timing throws were right where they needed to be. Completion percentage be damned, the man was effective when he needed to be. The D put the team where it needed to be and Reggie Ball closed the deal.
Great, great win for this team and Tech fans everywhere.

Great win Tech; however, inconsistency is the the top adjective of Chan’s team. Even though this win is one of Tech’s biggest in a long time, Braine still needs to get axed and Gailey isn’t the answer for long term success.
I hope we clean the leg humper’s clock next Saturday but it wouldn’t surprise me if the team comes out flat as a pancake just like they did against Virginia. We can’t spot the mutts 17 points and expect to win.

It was no surprise to me that Tech, the ultimate Jekyll and Hyde, hot-cold team, played great games against excellent Auburn and Miami teams. However, “Tman” before you start your bashing of Mark Richt’s “big wins” this year, try and remember that, MR is 4-0 against Tech and Tech has yet to play GA this year. I know that the Ga game is Tech’s “Super Bowl”, but you should probably wait until we match up next Saturday before making any comparisons

I cannot understand why Tech fans cannot just enjoy a great win and not have to start with the tired, “pups”, “mutts”, etc in their comments. A few differences between Tech and GA fans: Tech- all they care about is beating GA, if they do that their season is a success (even if it is the only victory of the season), watch every GA game intently in hopes that GA will lose, think of GA as biggest rival GA- not too concerned with TEch, viewed as the bad fraternity trying to associate with the good one, would rather beat serious conference rivals, don’t follow or care too much about Tech’s on and off-field developments

Well Dave Braine what do you have to say today? I hope you are eating crow this mourning. The football team really showed you. So in the future keep your mouth shut. This is a awesome win for Tech. The Defense wrecked the Hurricanes from start to finish. And Reggie, CJ, and Choice played with alot of heart as well. The only down side was Travis Bell missing 2 more field goals and the special teams was awful again. Three fumbled punts back to back needs to be fixed fast. The other players need to slap Bell upside his head. He tried to give the game away just like he did against NC State. I hope he gets it going by the time UGAg comes to town next week. It’s time to give the Bullpups a beatdown.

Thanks Mr. Billips for correcting Golden Tornado on the color issue. I get so tired of these folks who get it wrong. When I was there, freshmen got a handbook of stuff that we were expected to know and do. The official colors are OLD GOLD and WHITE. We have used other colors over the years to make the uniforms look good. I liked the black jerseys back in Curry’s days, but black is not our school color. OLD GOLD and WHITE (not blue, not black, not yellow).
I think it’s a little disengenuous to be pointing fingers at Taz Anderson. The man has supported the program financially for many years. I’m sure he’d rather you just say “thank you” and shut up, unless you’d like to match his contributions dollar-for-dollar. Whatever input he has to the program (and I have no idea what that might be), he has paid for and then some.
It is disturbing to see the empty seats in the lower East stands, but some market genius obviously has convinced the administration of the wisdom of that move. Maybe it’s an idea whose time has just not come quite yet.
I was disturbed to see Mr. Houston on the field last night. The court ordered us to put him back on the team, but could they order us to let him play? I’d like to hear some words about that from someone at the Edge Center.
One thing that I thoroughly enjoyed was the key flag for “unsportsmanlike conduct.” I’m not sure whether it was just the dancing and juking that did it or whether the Miami thug actually “popped off” where the ref could hear it. I’d love to see more of those types of penalties. Trust me, you’ll see some thugs in red helmets displaying some of the same behavior. I get so tired of seeing some creep get up off the pile and act like he’s won the game because he made a play that he should have made. The chest pounding, pointing, head shaking toward the opposition’s sideline is just poor sportmanship. Yes, I’ve seen our guys do some of it too. It needs to end. Show some class. If you can’t, the refs need to start controlling that type of thuggish behavior.
I am a Chan and Dave detractor. One win over Miami hasn’t changed that. Two wins over Auburn hasn’t done it. I still remember the pitifuls effort against UGA(g) two years ago and against VT this year (remember 51-7?). Lest we forget, this is the coach that led us to a thrashing by Duke two years ago and coached us to the uninspiring crappy performances against Virginia and NC State this year.
That said, I WILL unashamedly enjoy this win, frankly because I’m allowed to. I grew up in Atlanta as a Tech fan and have supported the team for my whole life. If those credentials don’t impress you then I can make reference to the sheepskin that I have hanging on my wall that says that I’m entitled to “all rights and privileges” of a graduate of the Georgia Institure of Technology. I figure stating my opinion when I see things going wrong at my alma mater is either a right or a privilege that the sheepskin grants me.
One thing is for certain….there will be NO question regarding my heart and my allegiance next Saturday. To HELL with UGA!!!!!
I’d trade the victories over Auburn AND Miami for one win over the pups. Unfortunately, that offer is not on the table. So, I’ll gladly accept a season with wins over Auburn, Miami, AND UGA(g).
Let’s hope that we’re posting and reading gleeful notes again next Sunday morning instead of second-guessing and Chan/Dave bashing.

gdawg, you are full of crap. I pull for the dogs to be undefeated just so we can ruin your season. Were you paying attention last night, we beat No. 3 Miami. We beat Auburn. Too bad you guys didn’t have to play them this year so we could have a comparison? Guess we cared about that game. What the hell are you doing reading a GT blog anyway. Go read the article about the pups beating the Ky basketball team. Chan. I have screamed for him to get fired. First game that I really thought he, and his staff, out-coached the opponent. Not only were the players motivated but the coaches put them in great position to win. I am at least encouraged to know that he has it in him. I will abandon my “fire Chan” mantra since he isn’t going anywhere soon. I am still not a complete believer but I want to be. Maybe we can come up with some way to force him to watch the Miami game the night before every future contest so he remembers what he did. To HELL with georgia. Looking forward to screaming my head off at the flats next Saturday. Please Chan, 2 in a row. I’ll join the fan club if you win Saturday and drink the Kool Aid willingly and with gusto. Once again, TO HELL WITH the pups. pups, pups, mutts, pups, etc.

as i stated above, a great win for GT and i hope the team has two more wins in its future this season……golden tornado, while this was truly an incredible win and i was cheering just as loud as the next guy, i believe tech nation was divided into chan supporters and MORE than just the silly mediocre few…..four years of mediocrity is not erased by such a win but its a start, and admittedly with this win, the season is an improvement over last…..and you’re right, no one, including chan supporters, saw this coming because of the recent past under chan…..however a few more games like this and the “legions” of chan supporters will grow and doubters will obviously shrink….fortunately, the players went out and proved dave braine wrong……on a game note, what i think proved to be the difference from the typical win under chan, in which the offense manages just enough points and lets the defense win it was this……as the game wound down with tech holding the lead, chan continued to be ‘aggressive’ with the play calling instead of going conservative and even though GT didn’t score, they made first downs and won the field position battle, which in turn ran time off the clock and let the defense rest, and made miami’s offense start deep in its own end….this avoided the typical 3 and out pattern of so many tech games in the past which eventually tired out GT’s defense, making them unable to continue a high level of play to the very end of the game and vulnerable to giving up the big play…….i give chan credit for opening up the playbook to the very end and playing to win instead of ‘not to lose’…..and he called a smart time out(just as the play clock hit zero) with 3 minutes left to talk it over and another successful third down conversion was the result….(that’s something else chan has done poorly in the past, end of game decisions and clock management)….one more thing….was anyone else slightly stunned and worried that after all they went through this week and they had the game won, and needing simply to run out the clock, they elected to go to the shotgun and actually run plays with reggie running the ball and he didn’t even cover up the ball while being tackled……anyone care to explain that strategy? Finally, hopefully the GTAA is putting together tenuta’s pay raise and extension….Now, if we just could beat georgia…………………

First of all. Congrats to the Tech Defense. Very well played. I even enjoyed watching that. Most of all you so-called fans crack me up. This time yesterday your all running your mouth about your coach and team not being able to win. You win a big game, a good win, but you think your world beaters. BE CONSISTANT before running off your nerd mouths. Your all a joke! You should back your team all the time not just after a big win. Those are few and far between for your team. Imagine if your backed your team through these bad years like we still backed Ray Gump. Your team just might feed off of this and become a little better. You are the most pitiful fans in all of college football. I feel sorry for your team because there is potential there. Back your team every Saturday you losers! Dawgs by 10! Woof!

Doss, those that live in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones… not only did you have your fair share of detractors under both Donnan and Gailey, you’ve got a ton of folks wanting to fire the current head coach - yeah, the one that’s taken your team to the SEC champ. 3 of 4 years.
Fans will be fans, and good ones and bad ones are at every school. Don’t act like you folks in Athens are over there holding hands and singing Kumbaya!
And last I checked, folks were simply enjoying a win over a #3 ranked team on the road. Nobody said anything about being world beaters. However, please enlighten me… when’s the last time you’re school beat a top 3 team on the road? And please tell me how you reacted when you last did. I’d love to learn from your “sophisticated” style.

3 fumbled punt returns, 2 missed field goals…. I’m still PO about the game. We handed the game to them and they just didn’t take it.

Great win Tekkies. Your defense is one of the best in the nation. I will give you that.
I still say we will beat you Saturday. Your special teams are either really bad or non-existent. I haven`t been able to figure that one out yet.
We have been able to take Ball out of both games he has played against us by getting inside his head.
He seems to lose his composure against us.
The bottom line is our big offensive line will be able to block you, you will make mistakes on special teams and Ball will fold.
Those 3 things equal defeat.
Again great win over the Canes, but we own Gailey and Ball. Some things never change.

To GA Tech and their fans, Great Win over Miami. Cherrish it and enjoy. Now to next Saturday. Better get off that high because UGA will be coming to play as they fine tune the offense before the SEC Championship game. You come out flat and UGA will put up 14 quick points on you. Also keep this in mind, DJ Shockley is a totally different QB than the one you played last November and he will beat you with the run and the pass. It will be a good game, but in the end UGA will come out on top. Final note: Quit hammering Mark Richt’s road record this year. He is much better than Chan and has taken us to our 3rd title game in 5 years. He is also one heck of a coach in opponents stadiums.

Not a bad analysis, Bulldog Jim, but I’m going to disagree with you on your O-line. They might be bigger, but that doesn’t mean they’ll always pick up the constant blitzes and gap control. You had the same O-line last year and Tech’s defense had a field day on Shockley. I believe Tech’s D should do very well against UGA’s running game, as they have on numerous other occasions this year.
Can’t argue with you on Ball vs. UGA. Hopefully he’ll come out composed as he did last night.
The test will be the Tech O against the UGA D and Shockley’s arm. DJ looks tons better than the guy who played in last year’s game, and I think he’s fully capable of making the plays. UGA’s defense has lost a little bit of it’s luster, but then again we all know Tech’s offense isn’t going to score more than 21 or so.
I see it as a good matchup in which the Dogs should be favored, but Tech definitely has a shot (perhaps it’s best shot since ‘01). But as I’ve said before, with this team no final score will surprise me unless Tech wins a blowout.

I remember that day when I was 2 years old, and my dad paced around the floor in 1990, hoping and praying that the Jackets would get the last minute upset against the #1 ranked team in the nation.
I remember that day last year in the mist of a disappointing basketball season when we played Wake Forest, wondering if we would get the OT upset to put our season back on track.
I remember that day when we played Auburn at the beginning of the season, and I began to wonder if the Jax would come back to Atlanta with bragging rights.
I remember the day that the miracle in ‘04 basketball came against Duke.
And I remember that day (yesterday) wondering if the Jax would dish out another miracle against Miami.
Get ready Dawgies, you’re gonna have a game on your hands.

thanks to billups. i dont know how many times i’ve said white and gold, it was late.
to clarfy, taz might have been taken out of context as writers tend to do to make their agenda. he was one of my first heroes as i went to just about every home game between 1956 and 1964. i just didnt remember those great seasons that all talked about. you have to go back over fifty years to get into that.
dodd’s teams won over 9 games many times between 49 and 56. his last team won 9. between those years it was only 55 games in the those nine years, an avg of less than 6 a year folks. TAZ NEVER PLAYED ON A TEAM WITH MORE THAN 6 WINS and the teams he played on were only 2 wins over 500.
real tech folks probably dont need to go back and look at records before we talk of mediocrity because they have the passion. we dont have mediocrity now or then, unless, you want to let writers put the notion in your head. support your team, that is what is asked and be realistic about your expectations, those may be your problems. follow the billups mantra if nothing else.
GTNE80, is it all about who gives the most money to have the biggest voice and force or is it because you want to graciously love and support your school? i guess taz will have to make that decision but hopefully he will realistically look back on his own career, the value of it, in spite of the fact that they didnt win more than 7 in a year and continue to support it for what it is and was to him. as a kid i loved him in spite of the lack of wins and im sure the tech network loved him too and it played to his favor as he earned all that money to give. hopefully, he will choose grace and not sully his career or name so the foundation can continue for others.

Great win by GT! If you don’t follow the usual pattern and fold like an accordian against UGA it can be a really good season. You know what’s coming guys. UGA will send the house after Reggie and get in his head early. Their whole strategy defensively is to make him LOSE the game. And he probably will. Remember. In spite of the great Miami win the guy was 11 for 30. You have to find ways to win in spite of Reggie Ball.

GT Dave, your comments accentuate my point-“we pull for UGA to go undefeated so we can ruin your season”. What a loser. I thought this blog was about football, not which school is better academically “your boss is a Tech grad”, those jokes are tired and usually made by those that didn’t attend the school in question. If you were able to take a jab at Tech’s FOOTBALL success vs GA, I guess you wouldn’t rely on sophomoric attempts at humor (i.e. McDonalds) Where did you get your degree, Southern Tech, after you moved down from Ohio?

Never Never Never………has defense proven to be so valueable in my opinion as it was last night. Reggie(got to give him some credit), Tashard, and the offense played their part, but that Ramblin Wreck defense won the game for us. That is the best performance that I have ever seen from a Tech defense. Also, people can say what they want about Houston, but he looked like he hasn’t missed a step. Could this be the start of something?

Mem, you guys have every right to be excited over last night. AGAIN, my point is that the TECH fans do not support their team week after week. The only time your heard from is after a victory. Yes, we complained and wanted Gump and Donnan gone, but we sold out our stadium and supported the team every Saturday. You folks don’t. Your team would be that much better if you did. Makes a huge difference. I’m talking about supporting your team even if you don’t like your coach. You folks have not been this excited about your team in a very long time. Doss, please use spell/grammar check and the dictionary so we can understand what you are saying (unless you are still in elementary school, then I understand, and sorry for the comment).
Tech fans expect a lot, and when our team is not performing week in and week out, we begin to point our fingers at our coach. That’s what everyone does, including UGA fans. So stop trying to contrast fans. You guys are just as bad. How many times have UGA fans complained about coaching calls against Auburn, or Florida? Look at the UGA blogs after losses. Even with very few losses, you guys sound like “Tech fans; which would only strengthens my point that maybe our finger pointing is more deserved than yours. If fans did not put pressure on our coaches and athletic director, they would not be able to gauge our expectations. This past week, they were reminded of our expectations. Hopefully, they will keep our expectations in mind next week. Because once they have the pressure on them, it’s all up to the players on the field. Go Jackets, To Hell with Georgia, Tech by 10.
Also, don’t reply to my blog with insults because I am not going to get on until next week; so it wouldn’t make any sense to try and take jabs because I’m not going to see it.

I support my team week after week. Every week I cheer, watch and/or listen to the game, and read every article I can find on it, win or lose. However, after a loss I’m not going to pretend like everything’s peachy. It seems that Georgia fans have trouble even admitting that they DID lose, and even if they went 2-9 they’d claim that they should be in the national championship game. That’s not supporting your team, that’s showing your stupidity. I will admit that Tech fans do whine quite a lot, but can you blame us? We’re so good at it!
Unfortunately, I couldn’t watch the game last night so I had to listen to it on the radio. Fortunately we have one of the best radio commentators in the country in Wes Durham, so it was almost as much fun as watching it. Great job to the defense and offense, as both did an exceptional job against one of the most potent offense/defense combinations in the nation. Horrible job to the special teams, but fortunately our defense held on to overcome it.
Instead of firing Braine (nobody seems to complain about him during basketball or baseball season…) or Gailey (all he needs is a good offensive coordinator), why don’t we fire our special teams coach? Our special teams have been horrible the past 3 or 4 years (ever since Kelly Rhino graduated), and when they’re bad for that long you can only blame the coach. I don’t know his name, probably because he’s hiding under a rock somewhere…
I can’t wait for this Saturday, it’s going to be great to see us beat Georgia (finally) and send all those dogs home in denial that they lost a game.

Not sure why everyone is so shocked about this victory. It’s Techs m.o. They’ve done it before and will do it again. Quite frankly, they’ve actually had a lot of bad luck. They have always had great players, just bad coaches and a.d.’s. As for the UGA fans on this site, you guys would fit in much better in Alabama. It’s quite amusing and amazing to me to be lectured on football customs and courtesies by the Muttlanders. As I explain to folks outside of the State of Georgia, “Those folks don’t get out much.”
Top 10 Reasons Why Tech beats Muttland Saturday night in The ATL:
Tech played a much tougher schedule.
Tech played much tougher teams.
With the exception of maybe two positions, if you peel back the onion, Tech’s individual players are equal to, or greater than Muttland’s.
The quality of the fans.
Muttland has not beaten anyone of note this year.
The SEC East was especially down this year.
Tech now has confidence.
Tech wants it more.
Tech has the better team.
And the #1 reason why Tech defeats Muttland Saturday night in The ATL:

Great win for the players. Kudos to Coach Tenuta and his defense. We win in spite of the continued lackluster effort by Gailey’s “offensive” handing of our offense. This win notwithstanding, he has done NOTHING over the past 4 years to indicate that he has the guts, gumption, and apptitude to take us anywhere near the heights that Coach O’Leary did during his glorious run on the Flats.Again, great effort by our guys, they deserve the spotlight after dealing with so much lack of leadership from the three stooges- Gailey, Braine, & Clough.

Someone posted that he thought this was the first game Gailey and staff outcoached the other team. Am I the only one who thinks Gailey’s play calling has been good. He seems to have reivented himself this year (see option against Wake). Sometimes I think we get a little too cute (why throw fades to CJ when you have PJ?). Of course, thats an epidemic around all of football today. I hated the Gailey hire, but I supported his extension, and I think last night proves that he is certainly an exceptable coach. Was O’Leary better? Maybe. Would O’Leary have a better record than Chan does in the new ACC? I don’t think so. Remember, after Friedgen left, O’Leary didn’t win a big game (Peach Bowl loss, and then so-so next season). People complain about Gailey’s recruiting, but one thing to note is that Ron Zook had great recruiting classes and didn’t do too much with the talent. By the way, we need to start a website, keeptenuta.com. All we need to do is setup a paypal account, and we can all donate $20 and maybe that will keep him here, lol.

There are only three ACC teams with more overall wins than GT. Take a look at the latest AP poll… GT lost to number 5 VT, beat Auburn (no. 9), beat Miami (no. 10), and beat Clemson (no. 25). That’s a WINNING record versus the current top 25. Oh, and Tech’s currently ranked higher than BC and FSU. I do believe they should hire an offensive coord. I do believe that GT can consistently recruit good (smart) talent - kids that want to live in Atlanta and get a first-rate education.
GO JACKETS. BEAT THE DAWGS.
ps - yes, the last football game I went to, there was a flag boy. He had better steps than the girls.

Jeff, was Chan Gailey looking right at you when he got mouthy and went off? When I saw it on TV, I was thinking, the only way he goes off like that is if he read Shultz’s column and he’s standing in the room right now.

Nice win Tech, your fans were really nice when Tech beat us on the Plains. Auburn has improved and hoping for an ARKansas win to play UGA again. The Dawgs will be better than Miami, they were hard to beat, very good football team….

If being a flag boy would get me into Tech, I’d be a flag boy in a split second. Although, I think I can transfer on my own(Unfortunately, I’ll miss my freshman year).

I don’t have a tv so I check yahoo sports. I turned it on and it was 7 to 0 Tech. I thought, well a lot of teams score first before they lose. The next morning I got up and decided I would see how bad Tech got beat. The betting 17 points Maimi. I looked at that final score and then I read what Chan had said. I think I will go and talk to somebody about this game.

Congratulations to the Yellow Jackets, the coaching staff and the Rambling Wreck Neighborhood. When you have a following like UGA, then you might have something comparable to a DAWG NATION. Right now, you only have a neighborhood of nerds. Despite our intrastate rivalry, I was very happy to see Tech beat Miami at the Orange Bowl. Pulling against a group of thugs like Miami is as easy as pulling against the Soviet Union during the Cold War. Last night’s win will really boost enthusiasm and attention to next week’s game above normal rabid levels. I would like to point out to James that the “51-48” victory has been VACATED. Of course it should have never occurred since Jasper Sanks did not fumble as the idiot SEC referees called. The whole world recognized that blunder as that officiating crew was properly sanctioned by being pulled from the SEC Championship Game in 1999. We’re coming to Atlanta for a brawl next week so the entire nation can watch us take a sledgehammer to the Ramblin Wreck in prime time.

da man, you said “GT couldn’t care less about the low-rent folks/school at UGA. Almost no UGA comments here other than yours, and those that are here are here because there’s a game next week moron. Now get your fat buff off the computer and get a life MUTT.”
If you “couldn’t care less about the low-rent folks/school at UGA” why all the hostility? I guess you are including the Governor, Lt. Governor, as well as both US Senators in your “low rent folks from UGA” comment.
ScaredDawg, this is not a Tech blog. This is a Jeff Schultz column which if I’m not mistaken, we are all allowed to read and comment on, so calm down.
Y’all had an awesome win on the road which is great and which GT fans needed badly after the week they’ve had. GT’s huge win is going to make for an even more spirited buildup to the game Saturday which can only be a positive for one of the greatest rivalries in NCAA history.
The jabs, punching, and general ribbing that is going to be posted on AJC blogs this week will probably be at all time high. Let’s just try and keep them above the belt.

tech fans & for sure GTDAVE - Please CALM down.I was BULLDAWG Born & BULLDAWG Bred & when I die I’ll be BULLDAWG Dead. But CONGRATULATION’S on whipping the ” CANES ” Great showing on NATIONAL TV. To bad Gailey had to play Rueben, the WHOLE NATION got to see your PROBATION Stats. Do you people have to get SO EXCITED about ONE game. I guess so when they are so FEW & FAR between. Last week this blog was so hilarious about Gailey ( IDIOT) - Braine (didn’t have one).It was a GREAT win but what happened against N.C.St. / Virg / Va. Tech All may I add had MOBILE QB’s. I would lieing if I said I was not a little worried about this week’s game. But just like the last 14 when I was nervous, the DAWGS won 11 & had there been the review system they have now it would of been 13 & 1. I am trying to pay you guy’s compliment’s - you have a great defence. Check the DAWGS stats on defence, we are not to bad either. I’ll be @ Bobby Dodd ( SANFORD) Stadium Sat. nite with about 30000 more DAWG fans. You all will know me, I’ll be the one with a BIG smile on my face @ the end of the game.

Well, it was a great game and so unexpected or was it really just typical under Gailey’s regime. Win when nobody expects you to and have a nail biter when you should win. The GA. game and the bowl game will tell whether this team is now turned around. One of the best defensive performances I’ve seen since 1985’s Black Watch days or a few of the 1990 defensive performances. Great effort by the players who like the fans don’t buy into being average.

Why Tech will lose:
1) Reggie Ball is a head case. 2) Travis Bell is a head case. (Word to Chan: Hire Smoltz’s sports shrink, or invite Ball and Bell to church on Sunday.) 3) The flat-as-a-two-week-old-Coke-2-liter Tech team that lost to Virginia will show up. 2) 2 of Tech’s 3 losses came against sorry teams—one of which may be home for the holidays.
Why UGA will lose:
1) Against teams currently in the top 25, Tech is 2-1. UGA is 0-2. No, we’re not going to count that win over “#8” Tennessee, and both Boise State and South Carolina are among the “others receiving votes”. (How ‘bout them ‘Dores? But I digress.) 2) Shockley runs pretty hot and cold himself. 3) Tech wants it more. 4) UGA will be looking ahead to (hopefully) two trips to the Dome (See? I can pull for UGA too!) 5) That Tenuta defense. (Word to Braine: What about Tenuta’s contract extension?) 6) The Tech team that knocked off Miami will show up. 14 points against the nation’s #1 D isn’t shabby, and Reggie looked like someone slipped a Prozac in his Wheaties.

Kills me when every time a nerd tries to remove the mote from a Dawg fan’s eye, by criticizing spelling and grammar errors, he exposes the beam in his own eye by making like errors.
Congrats on a great upset in enemy territory. I don’t get how a team could look so pitiful one week then look like world beaters the next, but I hope your good team shows up Saturday so the game will be exciting, with no excuses from either side.
Please stop acting like the Auburn you played at the first of the year is the same Auburn now. Not to take anything away from the fact that you got the “W” but Auburn has grown leaps and bounds since the first of the year. Be glad you got to them early.
You beat a very good team in Miami, I tip my Bulldawg cap to you.
Did you hear that a Tech student just transferred to UGA? It lowered the average IQ of both Schools.

Boy do I love to read these blogs. Good to see that the rivalry lives! First, the ‘62 victory over ‘Bama was the biggest victory in Tech history. Bama was ranked #1, defending national champs and had an winning streak of 20 some games. Tech played nearly flawless “D” and only a fluke allowed Bama to score in the last few minutes. At that time the Tech student body was seated between the 10 yard line and the back of the end zone. I was right on the goal line and had a clear view of Tech stuffing the two-point convertion try. As a matter of fact the Bama runner didn’t appear to score the touchdown but it was counted. To top it off, Ray Charles was in concert that night. But this Miami win was close.
If Tech can get a lead on Ga then that Tenuta “D” can take over. Shockley should be a bit steadier than those freshman starters at Auburn and Miami but Tech will blitz him silly if he is forced to pass a lot. If we fall behind early then I am afraid we are in trouble. But in any event Tech will give a good account of itself. By the way, give Chad a break and concentrate on firing whoever was in charge of assuring that the football team was eligible. To wipe out six seasons of games is just rediculous. Somebody was asleep at the switch.

To “Question” — That’s a good call there, but no, Chan wasn’t looking at me. He was looking at the media in general, scanning the crowd of vultures. Later, however, I did talk to him face to face, and I’m happy to report he didn’t glare, point his finger or throw a left hook. But say what you want about Chan, he’s always been a professional guy. Tman: Comparing Chan Gailey to Bobby Dodd is like comparing Brittany Spears to Phyllis Diller. I’m very proud of the players and their gutty performance. Tenuta and the defense won that game. Ball was great and could be better. Cudos to all the players and assistant coaches. If you watched the game on tv, you could have not help but seen the number of times Ball was looking for plays from the sideline and the number of times Gailey was reading the chart he created unable to make up his mind what play to call. The 2 early timeouts were the result of Gailey not being able to make a decision. Several times you could see players with their arms outstreched wondering what play to run. Give me a break, with his experience he should be able to make calls without a crib sheet. Better yet, let Nix call the plays.
Gailey can stay, its Braine that should be fired. The Probation happened under his watch. He has brought shame and discrace to the Institution

To Michael: You can remember 51-7, but can you remember 0-48 the biggest point difference in the series?
To golden tornado: comparing gailey to Bobby Dodd is like comparing Brittany Spears to Phylis Diller. Tenuta and the Defense won that game. Cudos to all the players and the assistant coaches. The Miami win won’t mean squat if we don’t beat UGA. We have suffered too much. Those who, all of a sudden, think we’re great and Chan is great need to be cautious. Beat UGA and then I will agree.

Hey, BulldawgMBA (isn’t that an oxymoron?), yes the Sanks fumble was an incorrect call; I’ve said for years they should use younger refs that can actually see! (Of course, now with the replays this is no longer a problem.) Keep in mind the game was tied; even without a Jasper fumble they still had to kick the field goal, certainly not a given …
Also, you were half correct about the game Saturday. It’s an ABC split-national telecast; Notre Dame vs. Stanford is the other ABC game. So only half the country will get to see the Jackets whip the dawgs!
OK, I’M OUT OF THE CLOSET: WHEN GT WINS SATURDAY, I ADMIT IT, I’M COMING CLEAN, I WILL JOIN THE CHAN GAILEY FAN CLUB! ONE GAME A SEASON DOES MAKE!
And Bill, I agree: Braine needs to go!
P.S. Q. What does a UGA grad say when he rings the doorbell? A. “… pizza delivery …”

I am certainly impressed with Tech’s win over Miami. Unfortunately, it could work against Tech this Saturday. Tech seems to get cocky after big wins. UGA certainly knows that they can be the next Miami and will not take Tech for granted. They have better athletes and ALOT more depth. They are also healthy along their defensive front. They have found themselves offensively and will score points. They will force Tech to win the game through the air. And that’s the problem. Reggie Ball is the QB and in a game like this ones gonna be, that’s bad news.

Doggit, with all due respect, a true Georgia fan would NEVER pull for Tech in anything unless it directly aided UGA (example:Tech ties Notre Dame in 1980). To be fair, I would not expect anything less from a true Tech fan. I have never understood the reasoning behind rooting for another “Georgia” team. In this case, Georgia Tech. By that rationale, I would have voted for Jimmy Carter for President. I can assure you that I did NOT vote for Jimmy Carter. Just my two cents……By the way, I will be there Saturday night, Go Dogs!!

Quit living in the past with Bobby Dodd. Live for the present and enjoy your win, because your past was just erased, and future is rather foreboding.

Fellow Techies,
I have to admit that we don’t put our butts in the seats like they do at UGAG. Over there (where no matter what, they never seem to learn to spell dog) they do in fact sell out their stadium.
Can’t say if it’s because there are so many of them, that they have so many non-graduates that attend, that their year-in year-out records are better (never mind the schedule quality), that there is nothing else to attract their sports dollars, their graduates tend to be from and remain in Georgia, etc.
The truth is, their home games are attended much better than ours. My guess is that so many of us don’t stay in Georgia.
Any ideas as to how we can fill more seats??? With Tech fans, not visitors!!!
By Al Davis
November 21, 2005 06:56 PM | Link to this
Come on White and Gold! There has got to be 40-50,000 fans in Atlanta! Judging from the location of many of the empty seats, it is the alums that don’t show. Also, when the bandwagon is full the stadium is full as well. If Tech alum would support the team win, lose, or draw, there would be more sellouts. But for some reason the alums are too arrogant to support the team in lean times. If that trend continues times will be lean forever.

To : GT or UGA fan - check your spellcheck it’s vetteDAWG. YES , class of “74” got my masters @ Vandy. I have had season tix in ATHENS since 1966. If you are old enough to remember that was the LAST unbeaten/untied Tech team to play the DAWGS. 23 -14 DAWGS & it wasn’t that close, you went on to the Orange Bowl & lost to Fla. THE GREAT & CLASSY Bobby Dodd’s last game. Just for the a little more history you probably DON’T know Dooley was 3 - 0 against Dodd.
