These Dogs not top pedigree, but good enough

Mark Bradley

Athens — They hadn’t won a game in a month. That was the bad news. The good: When finally they did win, the Georgia Bulldogs became SEC East champs.

There was a time when we wondered if Georgia would even rule this division, and now they do. When the Bulldogs broke through at Auburn in 2002, it was seen as a moment of deliverance. When they clinched the East by beating hapless Kentucky on Saturday, it was greeted as something much less. Indeed, this title-yielding game began under such muted conditions that, as Mark Richt said, “it felt like a morgue.”

That’s what happens when you lose to Florida and Auburn by the aggregate margin of five points. That’s what happens when you rise to No. 4 in the polls and then play your way out of the Top 10. “We got to 7-0 and everyone got excited about the national picture,” Richt said, and then D.J. Shockley hurt his knee against Arkansas and the Bulldogs went from 7-0 to 7-2. But there’s a greater point to this Georgia season, and with time to reflect we’ll all able to grasp it: Picked to finish third in the SEC East, the Bulldogs finished first.

Said Danny Ware, the backup tailback: “People doubted us in the beginning, and we showed them.”

Back to that beginning. When September arrived, Tennessee and Florida were touted as heavyweights. Georgia, meanwhile, had lost its quarterback and its defensive coordinator and its two best receivers and its three best defenders, and there was doubt as to whether any of the replacements were up to snuff.

Said D.J. Shockley, Greene’s scrutinized successor: “People were picking out individuals — like myself — and asking, ‘Can they get the job done?’ “

They got it done. These Bulldogs won’t play for the national championship, but neither, for all their accomplishments, did David Greene and David Pollack. What these Bulldogs have done is prove that this program has reached the exalted plateau where even a perceived rebuilding season can generate a division title.

Said Russ Tanner, the center: “We never said this was a rebuilding season.”

No, the 2005 Bulldogs weren’t as potent as they seemed on that heady day in Knoxville — Tennessee, it turned out, was no measure whatsoever — but Georgia was good enough to beat every team it should have beaten, and this was one of those years when simply holding serve was enough to book passage to the Georgia Dome. Sure, it would have been nice to whip Florida and Auburn and to stand No. 3 in the BCS rankings, but the mission of every big-time SEC team is to play for the conference title. For the third time in four seasons, Georgia will.

Said Kedric Golston, the defensive tackle: “We would have liked to be undefeated, but the main goal was winning the East. If you’d have told us going into the season this is where we’d be, we’d have taken that.”

Truth to tell, this is the fourth-best Georgia team of the last four years. Truth to tell, Georgia will enter its game with Georgia Tech having beaten nobody better than South Carolina, and at the time the Gamecocks weren’t seen as anything but mediocre. The now-devalued Tennessee game aside, these Bulldogs still haven’t managed a signature victory. But they’re 8-2 headed to Bobby Dodd Stadium, and if they win in the Dome on Dec. 3 they’ll play in the Sugar Bowl. Even by Georgia’s recently heightened standards, that’s still a big deal.

Said Bryan McClendon, the receiver: “We were picked third, and we came out with a championship. If that’s a rebuilding year, then maybe every year should be a rebuilding year.”

Great game!!! Great team effort. Great Defense. Great job Shock. 4 TD’s and maybe more but for a few drops. Great drive and TD, Tereshinki. Great game plan and great coaching. Thanks, Coach, for another trip to the big game at the Dome. It’s great to be a GEORGIA BULLDOG!!!!

For all those fans who were calling for Richt’s head, find some other team to root for. Three out of four years in the SEC title game is good enough for me and it should be for the rest of the Dawg Nation. He has us on the right road. We lost two games by a total of five points and one was without out starting interior D linemen and our starting QB.

Richt is the real deal and hopefully he will be here for a long time if you idiots don’t try to run him off.

Nice column Mark.

We may have been lacking in a few areas this year, mainly defense, but looking back it is not so far fetched to see that except for a injuries and a fumble in the 4th quarter by a freshman running back we could very easily be undefeated at this point. Some of those posters Andy just could not accept defeat and had to have a scapegoat that, they were positive was the whole cause of the loss.

There’s nothing that can be done about injuries and crucial turnovers in key games. We were told by everyone in the press this was a rebuilding year. I’ll gladly accept 8 wins and two narrow losses with one game to go and a berth in the conference championship secured, in a rebuilding year.

The future is looking very bright. The talent we are going to have next season and for a few years to come is the true fruit of Richt’s recruiting efforts.

Well said Andy!! I totally agree! Coach Richt has the team on the right track. 3 times in the title game of the best conference on the planet in 4 years is quite an accomplishment! Do any of the naysayers remember the Donnan/Goff years when we didn’t even sniff 1st place? I realize we’ve gotten spoiled and the entire Dawg-nation wants a shot at the Nat’l Title, but hey, we’ll get there one of these years. If we win out…that will be 4 straight years with at least 10 wins and finishing in the top ten. That is the mark of a great coach and a great program. One of these years…the pieces of the puzzle will fall into place. It takes a little luck in the polls and with injuries. Remember, it took Bowden and Tom Osbourne decades to win one. It took Spurrier 6-7 at Florida and at least a decade as a head coach. Richt has been at it for not even quite 5 years. We’ll get there…and on the way…let’s rack up as many SEC titles as we can!! Go Dawgs!!

Great game! Been starving to see a run like Ware had for 50+ and the TD! Looks like we’re moving to Atlanta for the next several games. Fantastic job CMR!

Tech is up on the Canes in the 3rd quarter…Hold on to that lead so you make us look even better when we crush you in your “vacated” stadium.

[clap] [clap] [clap]. Way to go. You beat Kentucky to win a weak division in a weak conference. You can really hang your hat on those signature wins over Boise State and South Carolina. The only things mediocre in this state are your mediocre wins over mediocre opponents in a mediocre conference this year. At least your basketball team is good…nice loss to Old Dominion.

I’m embarrassed to root for the Dawgs. With Tech’s momentum this week from beating the #3 team on their home field, combined with the stupidity of our coaching staff, Tech is going to wipe our butts this week. We can’t beat a mediocre Fla team and lose to Auburn @ home. What makes you idiots think we have a chance against an obviously good team? Fire the Bozo now so we can find a coach who can actually coach and maybe someday we can beat a high caliber opponent like Tech just did.

Yeah, D-Man here..I always bring you the TRUE insights into the college football world…so listen up. GA will defeat Tech this coming weekend…no problem..the only thing the Miami win did for Tech is rein-force the stupid idea that Chan should hang around another 5 years…heh, heh..what a joke! Tech will host GA and be all cocky cause they just beat Miami and GA will kick dat as*. Over confident and at home..that will kill them over the course of the game. This will indeed help GA’s standing due to the fact Tech beat Miami the week before. As far as the SEC Champ game…I would love to see a rematch between GA and Auburn..but oh, well..cant have everything. We will have a much better chance against LSU..and we will be SEC Champs. Well..gotta go and take a bet and ADVANTAGE of an LSU friend. He no doubt will think LSU will beat GA. Not bloody likely. D-Man OUT..Go Dawgs!!!

FireRichtnow—if you’re embarrassed to root for the Dawgs go root for somebody else. I goy a few questions for all the goofballs who want Richt gone— How many times did we get to the SEC title game under Goff/Donnan? ZERO How many times did Spurrier go undefeated at Florida? ZERO How many undefeated seasons has Georgia had in it’s history? I think 4 —including the 1890’s. Whoever decided the Dawgs should go undefeated every year is living in some bizarre alternate universe.

We lose two games by 5 points and the world is ending. Pathetic. Dooley would have never won a national championship at Georgia with fans like some of ours — he’d been fired long before 1980.

Dawgs are playing in the SEC title game— if you can’t get excited about that something’s wrong with you.

After last night, the game should be very intreresting. MR,after losing 2 games we SHOULD have won has another chance to show that he has grown as a coach and hopefully the play calling and coaching mistakes have been eliminated. Go for it MR and give your self and the team chances to win and I truly believe that you’ll beat both Tech and L.S.U. I heard that we had a lot of dopped passes yesterday(we didn’t get the game out here)but do the right thing as you did against AU, bench the ones who keep dropping passes and give others a chance. Good LUCK and “GO DAWGS”

Finally this year entire country realizes what a joke the SEC conference is. With cupcakes like Ole Miss, Miss St, Ark, Ky each SEC school continues to schedule non-conf opponents like La-Monroe, Ball St, Missouri St, etc. If you talk the talk, walk the walk and schedule some decent out of conf. teams and then prove it on the field.

I am truly proud to be a Georgia fan, and I am also glad that we have Mark Richt as our head coach. My concern is with our recievers, don’t get me wrong they have made some plays this year, but look where we could be if they could have caught a few key passes.I think Massaquoi is going to be our go to guy, we have some other recievers that can be playmakers as well, but they have to learn how to catch the ball , most of the easy catches are dropped. I think maybe they need to stand in front of a passing machine and catch 100 balls everyday before leaving practice, maybe that would help. As far as this season goes I think we have had a fine season, would like to be 10-0 but hey even if we were we would still be in the same position as we are now, going to SEC Championship and playing for a trip to the sUGAr Bowl, so I say we may as well win the SEC game and get to the sUGAr Bowl, win it and then we would finish our season right on track, because face I don’t see Texas or Southern Cal losing to anyone, so we would have been on the outside looking in and still be in the same position at 10-0 as we are at 10-2 so we can still say we have had a damn good season. So keep up the good work Coach Richt, I do question some of your playcalling sometime, but I can’t think of any other coach in the country i would rather have at UGA than you, you have brought us back to being one of the teams to beat in the SEC as well as the country not to mention the leadership you brought as well and for that Coach i think i speak for the entire Bulldawg Nation when I say, Thank You!! Now, let’s go take the sting out of the Jackets and get ready for the SEC West champ. GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOODAWGS SIC”EM

I think the biggest diference in this game was the offense’s decision to call big time plays. This is the first “cut loose” show in a while. Have the confidence that you can make a first down in two plays and use the other down for funball. If you look back on the season that is the scenario where we seem to hit our stride.

Congrats on the Championship. Good luck against Tech and WIN OUT!!!

Okay, I am so tired of UGAG fans talking smack every year. When was the last time their team played a # 3 ranked team away and won? Oh yea they have not! But maybe your team will get a shot at playing Miami in your home away from home—Tampa!
Sorry that your so called big win at Tenn. looks so bad but you do have Boise State to fall back on. Oh that’s right even Auburn knocked you off tween the hedges!! What was it now, 500 yards of Offense?!? With all your so called great playas in on D? Two years in a row to AU! The Techies win 2 out of 3 and 1 at their place, kinda funny really. Please do not put your so called program on par with USC becouse USC put up 70 on Arkansas and GA. just got by 23-20? Once again LMAO!!!!! Also that was Tween the hedges and on Homecoming!!! First of all, Congrats on the trip to the SEC championship game. Having said that, I do have respect for the SEC. Year in and year out, I think they are up there as the best conference in the NCAA. This year I do think the SEC is down, though.Outside of LSU, Aub., Bama, and UGA evryone else is mediocre to bad. You did what you had to do to win the East, but anyone who says that is SEC is strong this year is missing it.I just wanted to congratulate and make a statement. I will now shut up and go to our blog and celebrate our victory over the U…….P.S. I hope you don’t fill our stadium up Sat. and it is 75% Red and Black

Thanks for the respect Mark, the ones that don’t keep up with UGA football can’t comprehend the meaning of what you’re ultimately trying to say. All of these so-called “college football analysts” counted us out at the begining of the season & look at us now! I think those “analysts” completely forget about the recruiting accomplishments of Coach Richt. He’s been able to take a “no name” (in the college analyst’s world), & plug him in to an outlet, give him a 5 minute warm up,& start using him. I like Mark Richt. I like the way he conducts himself on the sideline because we all know, if he ever gets in an official’s face,(which is rare)we’ve been cheated more than once up to that point in a particular game.( Did any official working the KU game know what pass interference is?)I like “sliding in under the radar”, It makes the ultimate goal even sweeter.

Can we please put the conference argument to rest? PLEASE!!!!! It’s like beating a dead horse. A lower ranked team will ALWAYS play harder against a highrer ranked team because the lower ranked team is always out to let everybody know that they are better than what you think they are, period. You can throw SEC & ACC along with national rankings out of the door this weekend when we play you Jackets because the only people that care about this game is US! jacket in sc,I’m not trying to pick a fight & thanks for the congrats, but this game, just like other games in similar circumstances,is a players game. You b*** from Nerdland can cry and moan and say “schedule rankings” all you want but a true football fan knows that an SEC schedule week in and week out is uncomparable. Neck Dawg, what rankings are you looking at? The Bobby Dodd Nerd 25? This “neck” can read just fine. However, you my friend are insanely jealous of UGA, otherwise you would use a different moniker than one with “DAWGS” in it? grovelling back on after lame game sat…kudos to bulldogs/got it done when had to///admit i got excited when saw 3-0 score at end of first quarter….i would put shockley up for sec player of year/certainly would have beaten florida had he played…too many crucial mistakes against auburn[not his]…and oh my///gamecock dream….he does not complete that 3rd and nineteen from 10 yard line/we kick field goal and win 18-17…we are 6-2 and you are 5-3///good luck…would like to see arkansas upset lsu and you get another shot at auburn….and finally/the other USC looked vulnerable against fresno….someone is going to beat them 90-89!!

Mark Richt needs to get over his ego problem and name an offensive coordinator. His handling of the Auburn game seemed like a first year coach. We will continue to lose close games until he realizes that he is doing the same as Ray Goff which is losing the game on the field and in the emotions of the players. The players need to fired up but Mark is too laid back to realize this.

During this week of Thanksgiving, I’d like give thanks to Steve Spurrier for earning UGA a spot in the SEC championship game. (Hey, gotta give credit where credit is do.)

ATTENTION MARK:

To discount Georgia’s win over Tennessee is ludicrous! Come on Mark, you have to know more about team sports than that! Teams fall apart from various problems like injuries, infighting, etc. and that is exactly what has happened to Tennessee this year. They were a MUCH better team the day they took the field against Georgia, and I bet they would have beaten Bama, S. Carolina and Vandy if Gerald Riggs and Jason Allen had not been lost to injury. After losing to Bama the way they did, it is pretty obvious that collectively there was little left to play for. With a pre-season ranking of #3 and favorite to win the SEC, why would they give a damn about trying to make the Peach Bowl? This happens all the time in football, and Tennessee is no exception. But no rational reason to discount the Georgia win over Tennessee.

Let’s hope for an Arkansas upset this Saturday so Georgia can BEAT AUBURN in the rematch and show who the best team in the SEC truly is!

murph….not too sure about texas[as they play in same league as oklahoma who usc destroyed last year….they still haven’t recovered] but think usc could be beat/penn state is one second from undefeated but big ten is kind of lame…too bad sec cannot produce one loss team

HEY, TROJAN TED GLAD TO SEE YOU ARE ALIVE! A LITTLE MORE HUMBLED I SEE!! HANG WITH US, ITS NOT OVER YET!!!

GAMECOCK GARY: I THINK PENN ST. IS A REAL DANGEROUS TEAM TO PLAY,AT LEAST WITH TEXAS AND USC WHAT YOU SEE IS WHAT YOU GET. PENN ST. HAS A LITTLE OF THE UNKNOWN.

TO BOTH OF YOU-GIVE ME A PREDICTION ON UGA vs TECH THIS WEEKEND.

georgia will restore sec’s superiority after we fell to clemson and auburn fell to tech….i think will be close and low scoring 20-16 georgia/tech would have had a better chance if ga 9-1 or 10-0

MURPHY….have actually watched this game several times over the years….lately it seems georgia plays with more confidence and tech seems to press….i think georgia got their swagger back last week….they seem to have a mindset over tech like florida has over them…would not rate miami performance that great as all 3 florida teams have really come back to the pack over the last 3 years….georgia 27-17/shockley over ball
