Just another win for Spurrier? Don’t believe it

Jeff Schultz

Columbia — When there is only one sign hanging in a corner of the stadium that somewhat sheepishly recognizes the “1969 ACC Champions,” it sort of lets you know. Haven’t been a lot of celebrations around here.

It follows that Steve Spurrier tried to stay out of the way Saturday.

It was South Carolina’s moment — not his. It was for the players, the students, the alumni — not him. Florida? Did South Carolina play Florida? Funny. Didn’t even notice. Right.

“I didn’t look over there much,” Spurrier said. “I didn’t even look over there during pregame warmups. I just tried to find a play or two to help South Carolina. Didn’t think about Florida much at all.”

Steve Spurrier: Great coach. Lousy liar.

The wonder was that after South Carolina punched the Gators in the mouth and their fans in the gut with a 30-22 win at Williams-Brice Stadium, Spurrier didn’t turn around, face the Florida executive suite and give some biting salute.

This game meant more to Spurrier than he’ll ever let on, and it had far less to do with the fact the Gamecocks hadn’t beaten Florida since 1939 than it did his own history. It wasn’t so much that Spurrier left Gainesville after 122 wins, six SEC titles and a national championship for the Redskins. That was about ambition. But when his NFL experience went splat and Florida had an opening, school president Bernie Machen and athletics director Jeremy Foley didn’t immediately offer a warm embrace.

Spurrier wasn’t certain he wanted to come back. But he would’ve liked the chance to say no. It hurt.

“He kept saying all week it was like every other game,” defensive tackle Chris Tucker said. “I was thinking, bull. This is his old team. I’m sure he was more excited than anybody.”

Could this have possibly gone any better for Spurrier? The Gamecocks (7-3) have now won five straight after losing to Alabama and Auburn by a combined score of 85-21. Spurrier came into the season wanting to be one of the big three: Florida, Tennessee or Georgia. He beat two and scared the hair off the third.

It almost seemed like he was preordained to win Saturday. South Carolina led 7-0 before it had even done much on offense. An interception and ground-shaking, 48-yard return by the 288-pound Tucker set up a short TD run. Later, with a 14-3 lead, Spurrier went for it on fourth-and-2 from the Florida 3 rather than kick a field goal — and fullback Daccus Turman punched in his second touchdown.

Quoting the man who changed offenses in the SEC: “Who’d ever think that fullback up the middle would be one of our best plays?” The Gamecocks had 80 yards rushing by halftime. They had been averaging 79 per game.

Spurrier’s players emulated their coach. They were neither intimidated nor lacked confidence. They committed no turnovers, had only three penalties.

What would it have been like if he was on the other sideline?

“It would’ve been like every other year,” Tucker said.

On the other sideline, this was Urban Meyer’s view: His players looked disorganized, even disinterested. A shot from Spurrier: “I really think they played harder against Georgia… . This was one of our easiest wins.”

Florida was called for 11 penalties, including a false start on second-and-inches on a potential scoring drive at midfield, and illegal participation for having too many players during a South Carolina punt, which negated a would-be final Florida possession.

Should play well in Shreveport. Spurrier and Meyer are both 7-3, but it’s not hard to figure which one would win a popularity contest today. After the game, South Carolina players dumped an ice bucket on their coach and attempted to carry him off the field, but Spurrier declined.

“You only do that for conference championships,” he said. “I’m going to have to coach them up on that.”

But they all knew what it meant to Spurrier, even if he said only, “Winning at Tennessee and this victory are similar.” They presented their coach with a game ball in the locker room. Spurrier got emotional.

“His face was all red,” said tackle Na’Shan Goddard. “He was smiling.”

Seems he also had something to celebrate after all.

Spurrier is our generation’s Bear Bryant.Simple as that.Whether you love him or hate him,he can flat coach. If he doesn’t win SEC coach of the year, then the award doesn’t mean much. You can see the improvement in the team from week to week, and the players now have confidence.Lou Holtz built teams,Spurrier is building a program.I think that this is great for the SEC . Hats off to the head ball coach !

I cant understand Mark Richt, when it comes to the crunch time he just cant coach, his plays calling is horrible even to the average fan. GA loss to Auburn is inexcusable, his play calling is simply bad, and instead of going for the touchdown he chose to run the ball at the last drive. Well it’s clear now, when Georgia is not leading by at least 10 points by the end of the third quarter, GA probably will lose. All our losses to Florida and Auburn are because of bad calling, we need an offensive cord. Mark richt really need to hire good Offensive cord. UK has really a good chance to beat us

I agree… Mark Richt has made one decision after another. All have been bad ones. The game is completed by 2 struggles. Just give it up richt and go back home to the criminoles where you’ll inherit the job from another crooked leader. The master himseld… Bobby

hey vince and Jowl: I was under the distinct impression this article was about Spurrier, not Mark Richt. Anyway, SOS is the epitome of the saying “he can take his’in and beat your’n or take your’n and beat his’n”. As for young Mr Meyer, he was taken to the woodshed by the old ball coach. He best be regrouping or this could become a way of life for him in the SEC.

Jowl/Vince: Remember what things were like under the previous 2 coaches? It’s guys like you who will probably run Richt out of GA and then we’ll end up with a Golf all over again.

I told you after the Florida loss that this would happen. And while Richt’s play calling is sometimes suspect, the fact of the matter is this, Auburn is the better team! Bring on “Brady Carl”. War Eagle!

Last week BAMA fans were asking the question LSWho? The week before, Georgia fans were saying the ol’ Bayou Bengal must be jealous cause nobody was talking much about LSU any more. My how times have changed!

To all you Bama fans it’s LSU — you’re gonna remember that for the next 12 months aren’t you?

To all you Georgia fans, folks are talking about LSU now. We’re No. 4 in the nation with only one OT loss on our record. You have two losses and are outta the Top 10 for sure. Probably out of the Top 15 as well. So who’s jealous now???

Bayou, LSU is good. No doubt. But in 12 monthes you guys are still going to remember that you blew a 24 pt lead. And I’ll go ahead and beat you to the punch…Us GA fans are still going to remember 4th and 10 and that 62 yd gain. Ain’t College Football great?

Right adam, Auburn remembers the 4th and goal in 2003against UGA. Our last loss until 2005. We had 0ver 500 yards total offense playing LSU, SC,Ark. KY and Uga.LSU is good, but could have won that game at Baton Rouge(5 missed FG`s)awful.Auburn should be good again next year, if we just keep recruiting those GEORGIA boys, like Chris Slaughter(WR),Peach County ( committed), who should play alot next year along with Pat Swinton WR(Tucker) with Trey Blackmon(Lagrange) starting LB.They just keep coming….thank you

Lee Corso said Spurrier will never win at South Carolina. What this shows is never doubt Steve Spurrier again. I guess Duke was not enough for some doubting Thomases like Corso.

By Chuck

November 13, 2005 11:33 AM | Link to this

Now you know why Corso is in the booth and nobody wnats him back on the field. I was at Williams Brice sitting in the Gator section, It was a beautiful sight watching the “Coach” out coach the wannabee and the icing on the cake was “out tricking” Meyer at the end of the game, hed did the same thing to Saint Bobby a number of yuears ago.

AOS can flat out coach and now as he is older he is not as stubborn as in the past, when is the last time a SOS team scored only 4 TD’s and all were rushing?

The DAWG Nation can send “the ol’ ball coach” a huge thank you. If it weren’t for him, we’d definately be sitting in Athens during the SEC Championship game. Now, we still have a pretty good chance if Richt can remember some of the plays he used to call at FSU. Anybody out there remember the no-huddle offense?

As a life-long Auburn fan with a grad degree from Georgia, I had an intense dislike of Steve Spurrier. I think his unsuccessful experience with Washington taught him that he is not a football diety, and that may have made him an even better coach. He has a twinkle in his eye that wasn’t there at Florida. Too bad Carolina is in the SEC. I think that the problem with UGA is, Michael Adams is calling the plays. It didn’t make much difference last night, though, because Auburn matched everything UGA threw at them.

Funny, this is an article about Spurrier and how he has taken a perrenial losing program and done far better his first year than many were expecting.

All you Aubies and LSwhoers beating your chests over your last minute wins are just wanting the chance to crow on a blog somewhere. I am sure there are other outlets available for you to act important. Same for all the Dawgs complaining about losing to Auburn. This article barely even mentions these programs, why bother highjacking a newspaper blog?

Spurrier is a heckuva coach. Love him or hate him, he can coach. Who thought they would see the day when SOUTH CAROLINA would be taking people to the woodshed rather than being the whipping boy?

Not exactly sure of the date but I believe it was early 1990’s. Larry Munson was broadcasting Falcons games then. Rumor was the Falcons was talking to Spurrier about the Falcons head coaching job. Munson was screaming his head off on his talk show one night, NOOOOO, NOOOOO, we don’t want Spurrier! So the young ball coach eventually goes to Florida, and the rest is history. UGA fans would have been a lot better off (Wins wise) if Spurrier had gone to the Falcons.

The resaon people dislike Spuirrier is he beats you consistantly. He turned every school around where he coached including Duke. He is similar to a modern day Bear Bryant.I am not comparing him to coach Bryant, but has done similar things. Auburn people disliked him, but respected his coaching. There art several legendary coaches including Coaches Jordan, Bryant, Dooley and Bowdon. Spurrier will be recognized in this group when its all over.

As a student at South Carolina, I can tell you that he has completely changed the culture of the entire school, not just the football team. He has done so much for this school in the short time he has been here and students are truly excited about the potential of this team. Good luck Bulldogs but look out for the ‘Cocks next year when you have to come to Williams-Brice.

The Bible teaches us that we shouldn’t hate anyone, but I HATE Steve Spurrier for his years at FLA. His smirk, cockiness, and propensity to run up scores stoke the fires of my memories until this day.

Having said that, one must give the devil his due: Spurrier can flat-out coach. He’ll do well even in God-foresaken Columbia.

I can’t comprehend what’s happened to Mark Richt’s offensive mindset. He was a brilliant offensive coordinator at FSU, but he calls one sorry play after another at UGA. He’s wasting his players’ talent at UGA. He’s even more timid than Dooley in calling passing plays and in driving stakes through the hearts of opposing teams. It should be a felony for UGA to keep its woeful wide receivers coach one day past the end of the season.

By Matt

November 14, 2005 03:19 AM | Link to this

The one glaring thing that is wrong in Athens is Mark Richt’s very suspect play calling. I don’t know if he is just determined to abandon the run or he cannot see things the defense is doing while calling plays from the field. Where as at FSU where Mark Richt was the leader of one of the nation’s most consistent and dominating offenses that would put you away before you knew what hit you while calling plays from the coaches box. I love the plays he runs but there just seems to be no rythm a lot of the time it is more of an awkward drives of a few big plays and not a wear em down long drive that is key in time of posession and controlling the flow of the game. Also I would love to see him run the ball a heck of a lot more we only attempted 31 running plays the entire game while Kenny Irons had 37 carries by himself. The part about that which bothers me most is if you really think about it and even look at the numbers you will realize that we have all the tools and all the talent to run the ball like that and Richt just wont do it. Kenny Irons had 37 carries for 179 yards and 2 tds while averaging 4.8 yards a carry, impressive at least. But for some reason our leading rusher, Thomas Brown, who is a big play back, only had 13 carries for 74 yards and a td but this is what boggles me he was averaging an incredible 5.7 yards a carry, nearly a yard more than the kid who won the game for them. If this average would have stayed true for Thomas Brown, which I know could easily be sustained,he would have finished the night with 211 yards rushing and who knows how many times he could have busted one and taken it to the house. Interesting I know but were still not even talking about the rushing yards that are always chipped in by our stable of bruising running backs like Ware, Lumpkin and not to mention Shockley who is always good for a decent rushing performance from his superathleticism.. But everyone just imagine if we were to run the ball that much and control that much clock I believe it would allow the Dawgs to be able to truly dominate an opponent by pounding them with the run all day long like Vince did in the Glory Days and we all know we got some young receiver talent and I would love to see what they could do in single coverage cause the safeties are so committed to stopping our smashmouth run game and watch #1 beat em down the field with a streak to the endzone…..Just think about that. Sounds like a familiar plan of success to me (i.e. USC, AUBURN 04, and any other consistently good teams they always have the most important thing in having a good vertical passing attack…….A SOLID SMASHMOUTH RUNNING GAME CMR JUST RUN THE DAMN BALL

War Eagle, you’re right on both counts. Us LSU fans are going to remember blowing a 21 point lead to Tennessee. I hope we NEVER forget it. Maybe that way it won’e EVER happen again.

And as far as the War Eagles or Plainsmen or Tigers or whatever the hell your fans choose to call that also-ran of a team, you’re right about gaining 500 yards on us. BUT YOU STILL LOST!

At season’s end you’ll look back and recall that it was LSU that knocked you out of the SEC championship game. As for the 5 missed field goals. You have an incredibly selective memory. It was a missed extra point by LSU that allowed you Plainsmen or War Eagles or Tigers to go unbeaten last year and then whine all during the offseason about being undefeated and left out of the national championship game.

See ya again next year.

Spurrier has had to follow NCAA rules as a college coach. Bear Bryant rarely had to.

By General Neyland

November 14, 2005 08:30 AM | Link to this

Don’t you dare compare Steve Spurrier’s success to Paul Bear Bryant’s. Bryant was a great coach but he also served in a different time. Unlimited scholorships and the reluctance of the NCAA to enforce recruiting rules violations allowed Bryant to carry as many players as he wanted…and the best that money could buy. Today, Steve Spurrier takes an average USC team and finds a way to beat better teams. Sure, he has some great players in a few positions, but who in the world is Blake Mitchell and where else would take guy play? The Evil Genius is just that….

By Pop Warner

November 14, 2005 08:39 AM | Link to this

You could compare Bear Bryant’s Alabama teams of the past to the present day New York Yankees. Bryant could get anybody he wanted at whatever price it took. No arguments….

By High Cotton

The ‘Bear’ might be an NCAA/SEC football icon, but the ‘Evil Genius’ is a fitting moniker, especially for someone who could coach the socks off of old Bear Bryant.

Bear never had to contend with the NCAA and with starting a ragtag team of Freshmen and Sophs, and coaching them into a winning team in the SEC. Bear had everything bought and paid for and dropped in his lap.

Like him or hate him you have to admit the guy can motivate and coach. It is great for the SEC to have Spurrier back. I’m a Georgia fan but an SEC fan first. I am also a realist. I am willing to bet Spurrier will have his third ‘big three’ victory in a row after the Georgia South Carolina game next year. Regarding the comments by some of the Auburn fans, haven’t you noticed that Georgia doesn’t play well against either Florida or Auburn. There is a long history of this too, nothing new. You could view that in many ways, but is Georgia Tech really that much better than Auburn? Auburn can’t beat Tech, period. Anywhere. Anytime. I guess that means Tech is just that much better than Auburn. It is people that think like you that put that easy money in my pocket each Saturday. I wish I could do that on NFL games, but they are absolutely impossible to pick.

I am a FSU fan(my number 1 team) and a Georgia fan(number 1A) and I have to disagree with the comment by Gator Hater that Mark Richt was a great offensive coordinator at FSU. He was not. Yes they piled up yardage, but thats because they had the best athletes. In crunch time, just like at Georgia he would choke and be ultra conservative. He doesn’t show much faith in his team. I guess if he was coaching USC that he would have called either a quarterback draw or a sprint draw on that 4th and 9 play. He is a great leader, but he needs to do what Bobby does and hand the play calling over to someone else. Mark Richt needs an imagination. This team should be cramming the ball down the throat of their opponents. They play so soft. With all that said, we would take him back at FSU in a heartbeat. Jeff Bowden sucks.

Now that Steve Spurrier has beaten his former team and made school history, everyone else in the SEC better look out! He is a great coach and no one coaching in the SEC can equal his ability. Blake Mitchell is maybe not as physically gifted as the best UF-Spurrier QBs, but he’s ok, and obviously very coachable. SC’s best player (Syvelle Newton)is injured.

Pre-season, I figured SC would be lucky to go 6-5 and a minor bowl.

Florida beat themselves with penalties. To me it appeared they were pressing, trying too hard, and made mistakes.

Urban Meyer is going to get some criticism I think is undeserved. This isn’t his fault, or Jeremy Foley’s. It’s the fault of immature players who were too tight in a must-win game.

Great win for Spurrier! For all you Mark Richt critics, just remember he did beat Spurrier this year. For all of the Spurrier hype, just remember he never had a perfect season at Florida, even with all the talent he had down there. So before all you Georgia fans jump on the criticize Coach Richt bandwagon, remember just how difficult it is to navigate the SEC undefeated. It almost always takes some lucky break somewhere along the way. Tennessee in 1998 with the Stoerner fumble… Auburn’s second chance extra point against LSU last year. I think the USC does not have the athletes mantra is a little overrated and the players will tell you that. Florida and Tennessee are down this year. Georgia beats Florida with Schockley. Auburn is better than they get credit for because of loss to Tech in opener. Auburn outplayed LSU and should be unbeaten in SEC play. But as usual no one team has been able to navigate the SEC schedule without tripping somewhere. Winning a national title from the SEC is very difficult because getting through the year perfect is much more difficult than in PAC 10, Big East, & Big XII. I think that the ACC, Big Ten, & SEC are much more competitive top to bottom. Thus, fewer weeks off with cupcakes and more difficult to go unbeaten. Big XII should be in with the tougher conferences but has been top heavy in recent years with only one or two truly strong programs.

Long-time Georgia fan here as well as student of SEC history. Spurrier is one of the best coaches in SEC history, and he is BETTER THAN BEAR BRYANT WAS. He will WIN BIG at South Carolina (too bad Cocks, he’ll only stay 7-8 years then retire). He WILL win an SEC title at South Carolina. He WILL make several coaches better than they are today (Richt). I salute him, because I am sure he is heartsick over having to beat his beloved Gators, but they put him in that situation. Cocks will finally have something to crow about instead of their past “empty crowing!” But don’t expect Georgia or the other teams in the SEC to back off, we will still be Top 10 material each season considering the recruiting juggernaut Richt is (41-8 the last 4 seasons). Guess that open date Florida has before Georgia isn’t that great anymore since they have to worry about beating SC afterwards!

I, like most others, can’t stand Steve Spurrier. I would just as soon see him wind up homeless, penniless, and cleaning out the horse stables for a living. He has no class, is rude and disrespectful, and gives no credit to the other team or coach, yet always blames his own players when something goes wrong. That said, he may be the greatest coach in college football, and deservedly will end up a deity along the lines of Bear Bryant, Knute Rockne and others.

South Carolina is 7-3 with basically the same team Lou Holtz had last year. Lou is an excellent coach, but time has passed him by, unlike Spurrier who continues to be the best student of the game coaching today.

I am a UGA fanatic, and enjoy nothing better than seeing the Dawgs beat Spurrier and especially love seeing him throw his headphones and his visor on the ground (THAT is when you know you got him!). But, I am very afraid that visits to Columbia are just not going to be as happy as in the past years.

The Dawgs are psychologically beat when they go to Gainesville. They are psychologically beat when Auburn comes to Athens. And now I am worried they will eventually become psychologically beat when they play SC coached by SS.

To paraphrase an immortal line from “Planet of the Apes”….

“Damn that Spurrier, damn him to heck!)

Don’t get me wrong. I wanted to beat SC bad but because we needed the win not because Spurrier was the coach. And since they haven’t won against UF in quite some time..they’re aloud to have just one. I do not like Steve Spurrier. Let me say that again: I do not like Steve Spurrier. I don’t hate him because I TRY not to hate anyone but that’s another story… However, the guy can flat coach. USC will be something with which to reckon for next few seasons and it will be because of Steve Spurrier. I for one am glad that he slammed the door on his old school getting to the SEC title game while teaching the Ultimate Media Darling Meyer a think or two about SEC Football—unfortunately something CMR didn’t do this year. That said, Coach Richt DID beat the ole Ball Coach didn’t he? I remember that game getting a little too close for this Dawg’s comfort although I really didn’t doubt that the Red and Black would prevail. Now that we’ve seen the season play out, it wasn’t so much of a shame for UGA to have a close one against the ‘Cocks, huh? At least the Dawgs beat them: something UT and UF didn’t do…

A parting shot on Saturday night’s game. Auburn, consider this your due: the winning team played a great game, had a few breaks and most of the night went pretty much their way. The losing team could have won but somehow fell short in a back and forth kind of contest. Does that sound like a typical UGA/AU game or what? UGA and AU have the same number of losses (2). Auburn’s only lost one SEC game and the pre-season 3rd place SEC East Bulldogs will (likely) make it to the SEC Championship game while Auburn probably will not. Who’da thunk. Here’s predicting that the Aubie’s will take ‘Bama in the Iron Bowl.

Spurrier will win at South Carolina. He will win big eventually. A conference title within three years? Possible.

What most UGA fans don’t realize is how unhappy FSU fans were with his play calling, especially in big games. Look at our point totals in the bowl games he was the Offensive Coordinator. Not good. If the UGA fans ever want to get a website for firecoachricht.com, you’ll have to buy it from an FSU fan. He’s a good man, runs a clean program, but is not an offensive genius.

So let me see… I guess SOS can flat out coach. seems to be the consensus around here. and Mark Richt is bad offensive coordinator. And the SEC is tough and waaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhh blah blah blah blah! This is the “beat a dead horse” blog. The key is what an amazing job SOS has done at SC, competing at the highest level and beating 2 of the so called big 3 of the east with mediocre recruits he inherited in his first year. It isn’t just the coaching but the ability to inspire and motivate that makes him so amazing. I’m not even an SEC fan, but I love Spurrier! how can you not love him?
