Alas, nobody cares about the White Sox
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
If a tree falls in the woods, and if nobody is there to hear it …
You know the rest. That saying is about the 2005 Chicago White Sox. Well, not really, but stay with me a moment.
As a native Midwesterner who once lived in Chicago, I can tell you something else that you already know: The Cubs are that city’s baseball team of choice. The White Sox are just a necessary nuisance for those who aren’t from the South Side.
Nobody cared about the White Sox when they embarrassed themselves with that exploding scoreboard. Nobody cared about the White Sox when they had that infamous Disco Night. Nobody cared about the White Sox when, among their slew of ridiculous uniform changes, they switched to short pants. Nobody cared about the White Sox when Harry Caray was their silly announcer (you know, before he became the Cubs’ sainted announcer). Nobody cared about the White Sox when they did the bizarre by going with an artificial surface in the infield and natural grass in the outfield.
So here’s the question: Since the White Sox are about to snatch a World Series title for the first time since World War I, and since nobody even in Chicago (well, outside of that South Side) is going to care beyond a yawn, does that mean the 2004 Boston Red Sox are still world champions?
Just wondering.

I am with u on this one. It is like no one cares about this pretty good White Sox team. Since my beloved Braves lost I have taken the Sox as my team of choice. GO SOX!!!

If you don’t know their names, you haven’t been paying attention. We didn’t get any respect all season, and we aren’t getting any even on the brink of winning the World Series. We’re used to it, and we’re going to take home the championship anyway. Go Sox!!!

As a proud Chicagoan, it’s about time that the “Future World Champion” Chicago White Sox get their well deserved respect! After all, They’ve only beaten the former champs, drove a stake through the hearts of the Angels, and now, have all but crushed the best that the National league has to offer! Give them their well deserved RESPECT! GO CHICAGO WHITE SOX !!!!!!!!!!

I found your comments amazing. Here I am in California where everybody is celebrating the White Sox wins. Personally, I see it as magic. In each game, the Sox come from behind, and they play just well enough, with perhaps a little more luck than the Astros to barely take each game so far. I keep thinking about Shoeless Joe helping out somehow from the great beyond…? In any case, it all seems very appropriate.

As usual, I think you are wrong Terence; and I wonder why you cannot find something about this very good team to write about. I think its your Cubbie jealousy, World Series envy, coming through.

Just think that the Chicago White Sox have gone from the have-nots to World Series Champs and they deserve it…This is the erea of “we have not been Champions since ???” Does this mean that the Braves will get their turn in 89 years…As long as their serious business man like attitude continues….But, maybe just follow Jeff Francoure and his joyfull attidude and they can win one sooner!!! Just don’t bet on it!

If we base champions on teams that we care about, can we really consider Boston a team we care about? I mean they are supposed to win but have rotten fans which make one root against them. Or what about Florida, Anahiem, or Arizona? Did anyone honestly care about them unless they were beating New York? And what about New York? Most people I know only “care” about the team who’s playing them. And what aobut the 2000 series? Do you know anyone outside of NY and of free will who watched that series? Spare me on any of the other yank teams, the mercenary fish, and the jays. The 95 Braves were too close to the strike amongst other sentiments. All I am saying is that if we have to go back to a champion that everyone “cares” about it might have to be the 1991 Twins. After finsihing 16 games out, they can have a cares about trophy, Go Sox!

Well, as much as I give the White Sox their respect, I agree that Chicago would’ve been much happier (along with TV Channels and their ratings) if the Cubs won instead. But it’s good to see a team that hasn’t won for a long time finally win… it’s a good feeling, isn’t it South Siders?

Hey major league baseball, FOX, and ESPN this is what happens when you pretty much only promote 2 teams (Yankees and Red Sox) all season long and neither one of them makes it to the World Series. Try doing a better job of promoting the game of baseball itself. The White Sox winning the World Series is pretty impressive. It’s a shame that nobody outside of Chicago or people from Chicago even care. I’m not from Chicago and I’m not a White Sox fan. I’m just saying it is bad for the game of baseball when sports fans and even sports writers as a whole don’t care who won the World Series.

How does stupid crap like this make it onto a major-market newspaper’s website? Just because the media hasn’t wet their pants over a very good white sox team, that doesn’t mean that nobody cares about them.It just means the media doesn’t care about them. Terrance Moore has been sucked into the mass media’s 3-year long orgy with New England. Red Sox still champions?? Give me a break.

Ah Terrence, you sound like a bitter man. Funny you refer to yourself as a “native” midwesterner, maybe you should apply for a full time residency down there. I think you have issues. “Yawn”.
I just put a note in my palm pilot to be sure to look for your column the next time I pass through “yawn” the great little town of Atlanta. It may come in handy as a fly-swatter.
Be happy that you get paid to write a column in which you don’t seem to have to worry about facts.

No, Terrence you are a dumb a* and you sure don’t know what a good baseball team is. Who cares about what you write about anyways. Thats what your column should be about. The happened to be a great team made up of real good ballplayers who deserve their respect. 2005 World Series Champs, Chicago White Sox!!! Go somewhere else with your opinions!

There are plenty of folks who care that the White Sox have won the World Series. I was born and raised on the South Side of Chicago and attended a good majority of the White Sox games as a child. I attended just one Cubs game in my life. During high school, I was a usher for the White Sox when Carlton Fisk was our catcher. Lamar Hoyt the closer. Harold Baines and Sammy Sosa in the outfield. Yes Slammin Sammy played for the White Sox first. It was a great accomplishment for a former White Sox legend Ozzie Guillen to have his team be the best the entire season and finish on top. White Sox 2005 World Series Champions. South Side!!!!!!

V Avant is right! ESPN centers all their baseball coverage around two teams…the Yanks and BoSox….and everyone else is just there.
How many times have I watched Baseball Tonight and there are several segments..including the leadoff segment.. on these two teams, and not much else on the other teams?
So now we see in the very low ratings that if the Yanks or BoSox aren’t around, there seems to be no way the media can generate any buzz.

I’m just a fan of the game and it was fun to watch these last two games. Would I rather have the Braves there? Yeah, but that act is boring.
It was fun to see the Sox and the 1-0 game was beautiful. Uribe’s last two innings on defense was enough for this fan to care about.

I’m a big time Cubs fan born and raised in Chicago Illinois and you know what? I’m absolutely thrilled, THRILLED!,that the Sox have finally bought a championship to our city.
Yes Adrian from Boston. It feels very good indeed.

Actually, Terrence, your entire premise is turned around. The World Series Champs and their fans don’t give a rat’s what YOU think (if, in fact, one can call the drrivel in your blog “thinking”).

Yea, you’re right no one really cares about the white sox, but, you gotta take your hat off to these guys because no one expected them to win it all at the beginning of the season, yet they managed to prevail. congrats to the world champ chicago white sox..

You’re out of your mind. People DO care about the white sox and your too narrowminded to see that outside of your realm. Expand your circle and maybe you can write something that reflects reality instead of your made up fantasy land.

As a South Side kid I went to Sox games with my Dad and I mostly ate hot dogs. Now in California I love baseball and was delighted to watch such an truly excellent team finally win it all! I am a Marlins fan, but I give the Sox all props. Sox rule and they are by far the best!! They came, they played and they conquered. They are one of the few teams out there that still plays real ball!

No one cares about the White Sox?
You’re right.
I’m sure people care more about the opinions of an online sports columnist who just happens to show up in a Google news search…only because the words “Chicago”, “White”, and “Sox” are marked in his column.
Best wishes,

Just more evidence that Baseball is not the most popular spectator sport it once was many decades ago.
Of course Baseball is still one of the most popular sports, it had record season attendance this year. But it’s not more popular than Football in spectator entertainment.
The NFL has higher attendance average, higher t.v. ratings, and grosses more money than MLB. Locally, in Atlanta, the Falcons leave the Braves in the dust in popularity.
