Tuesday Countdown: Selig hits the roof
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
10: Four hours before the first pitch, Major League baseball ordered the Houston Astros to open the roof for Game 3 of the World Series. No word on whether commissioner Bud Selig also will approve or veto roster moves in spring training next season.
9: And if you were the commissioner of baseball, wouldn’t opening the roof be the highest priority for you — especially in the wake of this likely going down as the lowest-rated World Series in history?
8: The man is one clear-thinking, rational thought short of being a sock pocket.
7: For the record, Dick Cheney first leaked the news about the Astros’ stadium roof. But he blamed it on the New York Times.
6: News: Rocky Balboa makes a comeback at 59. Comment: Great. Now we’ll never get rid of Evander Holyfield (only 43).
5: Bud Selig just announced that Rocky VI is on hold.
4: One sportsbook lists the Hawks’ over-under at 21.5 wins. Well, so much for that feel-good roster makeover.
3: Flaws notwithstanding, the fact that the Falcons are 5-2 after a difficult part of the schedule is impressive. But we’ll know more about the NFC’s pecking order after the bye, when they have four games against Tampa Bay and Carolina.
2: I’m not saying this just because the national bashing of Michael Vick was ratcheted up after Monday night. But quarterback efficiency rating might be the most worthless NFL stat since time of possession.
1: Bud Selig has scheduled a 2 p.m. press conference for Thursday, during which Michael Vick’s efficiency rating and mandates on what Americans should eat for breakfast will be addressed.

re: point no. 2
qb efficiency rating ranks right there with risp in baseball. statistics are for those that cant see the game or those that dont know the game well enough to talk about it. the rants on mv is similar to those about andruw this past baseball season who went on to be given the award for mvp by his peers in spite of his paltry .222 risp, not fans or ignorant writers that have to manufacture words thereby losing their perspective.
vick’s performance reminds me of mj going 10 for 25 only to take the long range jumper for three to win the game at the buzzer. ill take it in mv’s hands every time. he makes the team better as the run game is improved because the other team cant pursue like it normally does nor cover like it would like. though it is frustrating for him to not do it every series, he has the capacity to take over a game like few others.

I don’t care about QB stats but I am concerned that Vick does not appear to be any better this year than last season. I assume that is a function of Knapp’s system, the WRs and Vick himself. What I don’t want to see is this team become the football version of the Braves, able to reach the post-season only to be exposed as a pretender. And while we do play 4 with Tampa & Carolina, our non-division schedule is much softer after the bye. 11-5 is a very strong likelihood.
Lastly, if the Astros had a pair, they would close that roof and take whatever fine Selig would charge. Chances are, he can’t operate the sunroof is his car, more or less figure out how to open up the stadium’s roof.

Why should the home team have the option of creating an unnatural environment that gives them a significant advantage?
Is it their option to hit the opposing batters with strobe light beams….or salt the visitors water….or whatever
The roof is for weather conditons.. .that’s why they built it with a retractable roof…..not to help harass the opponents.
..also, why would baseball allow a team to build a stadium with such a funky configuration with a joke of a left field??

So, is no one going to comment on the fact that ol’ Bud does not make this kind of decision when the Braves or the Cardinals had to play there?
What is it about the ChiSox that makes this such an issue?
As a Braves fan, I’m quite miffed. Either keep it open for everyone or keep it shut for everyone.
Don’t make up your mind on the fly.
