Reserves do the job for Dogs
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Athens — Georgia played Arkansas Saturday afternoon in Sanford Stadium, and you never saw a more beautiful day for a football game. I mean, a day that sparkled under the sun, the kind of day meant for football in the South. Georgia was supposed to win the game, and Georgia won, but not the way most of these 92,746 woofers expected the Bulldogs to win.
When your rank in the nation is No. 4, and you’re playing a team below the radar, your constituents expect you to win in a style that brings them comfort and joy. This one didn’t. Not one Bulldog in the house breathed a relaxed breath until Joe Tereshinski III took a knee and the final second ticked off the clock.
Joe Tereshinski III, did you say? Are you confused, you ask? Where was D.J. Shockley and why wasn’t he taking the knee? This Tereshinski III, this is not golf. Football players don’t have sticks after their name, those are for Love and Armour and Howell, the country clubbing golf class. Or maybe some quarterback at Princeton or Harvard.
Well, it’s this way, and if you’re a Bulldog, brace yourself:
Shockley came down injured in the second quarter. He was trying to break away from a Razorback rush and came down in a heap. Didn’t look too bad at first, was able to walk off the field, but then was escorted to the locker room, then later reappeared on the bench wearing a gray T-shirt with “Finish The Drill” on the back. He was, indeed, finished.
That brought on Tereshinski, a junior with a mystical name in Georgia football. His daddy played here and his granddaddy, and both were stars. Joe didn’t expect to play much this year, backing up Shockley, who was finally making himself at home at quarterback, and looking better each week.
Nobody can be sure how long Shockley will be out, or if he will be back at all. But truth to tell, without D.J. Shockley, Georgia is not a No. 4 team in this nation. It was a struggle winning this game by the skin of its teeth, 23-20, when those mysterious people who set odds had projected Arkansas to lose by anywhere from 19 to 21 points.
This old codger isn’t so sure Georgia would have won much more convincingly even with Shockley in the saddle. This Arkansas team has a future, and if you haven’t heard the name Darren McFadden before, file it away. This kid is just a freshman from across the river in North Little Rock, and he can cover 40 yards in 4.3 seconds. He almost took charge of this game by himself. He scored on one run of 70 yards, and in the shadow of the evening, it was shown that he gained more yards (190) than all the Georgia running backs combined, and just 27 yards less than the whole Georgia team. The Razorbacks are young, just out of the cradle, and down the road, give Houston Nutt a passing threat and they’ll make many an afternoon uncomfortable for their SEC brethren.
Chances are, we’ll be seeing more of Tereshinski in the coming weeks. This was his first test in such a crucible situation, and the junior was not without his golden moments. On his third play, he lobbed a perfect pass that Mohamed Massaquoi reeled in at the 1-yard line, and that set up Georgia’s second touchdown. And later, he connected with Sean Bailey for 43 yards.
He had his lapses, but remember, this was a guy pitching his first big-time game. It was, in the long run, the vigilant defense and the special teams that saw this Georgia bunch through the gathering crises, lesser lights pitching in, as in the case of senior Mike Gilliam, rarely heard from, who recovered a fumbled punt that set up the field goal that would make the final difference.
“Oh, we could lose this game,” the old gamester Larry Munson had groaned before kickoff. “We could get beat today, I’m telling you. Our defense is full of holes, three of our best in the middle of the line are out. I don’t like the looks of this at all.”
Turns out, his old broadcast growl wasn’t crying wolf. But in the end, it was those who stood in for the wounded who filled the gap and saved the game.

well this one will keep matthew honest and out of the tech blogs for a while though it should be the rest of the season or year. maybe a few more will join him. boys you got your own problems with depth and no qb. i was pleased to see dj come back but did not know how important it was for you guys. he must have gotten some big promises or a trust fund to do it.
i really dont have much bile when it comes to your program and would like to see you do well since supposedly you recruit so much better than the tech folks to have all that depth(?). it is hard to figure why you guys have looked so bad against your venerable schedule. do you really think you are top five in the nation? you might not even be top five in the acc from what has been shown thus far.
serious reality check with a three point victory against arkansas, what ten points over miss state. what was it against u of la from nowhere. did it matter you beat tn as they struggle today to sccore a td at ala.
silence is golden this week after the trash you threw on gailey and the tech program last. only those with class will say otherwise.
by the way furman again you show your class by trying to spin it positive when it comes to amateur athletics.

DJ will be fine. What are the symptoms of a medial collateral ligament injury? The most common symptom following a medial collateral ligament injury is pain directly over the ligament. If only the MCL is injured, walking is usually not a problem, and athletes are often able to return to competition. Swelling directly over the torn ligament may appear, and bruising and generalized joint swelling are common 1 to 2 days after the injury.

Tornado, I can’t believe you’re even here saying this. You guys lose to some lousy team you should beat every single year. Every year! You lose…every year! Every year…you lose! This year it was NC State, last year North Carolina, the year before that, Duke. Both teams have some weak sisters on their schedules…but here’s some silence for you: how many has Georgia lost to?
What was that? None, you say? Maybe we don’t deserve a #4 ranking; that has yet to be determined. But we’re 7-0. Maybe Tech would be, too, if they could beat the teams they are supposed to, much less the Va Techs of the world.

The MCL injury he suffered is similar to what Michael Vick dealt with earlier this year, for those of you who follow the Falcons. Vick was back on the field two weeks after-the-fact, though he looked “limited.
The good news is, if the Dawgs can somehow get around the Gators (no small task - so masterGators, don’t get your scales ruffled), we have a bye week before Auburn. That gives ‘Shock THREE weeks to recoup.
My worry is, uh, Joe Tereshinksi. No doubt, he didn’t have a full week to prep for today’s game, and he DID complete 5 of 9, but the INT worries me… the gator-armed handoffs worry me (and our talented backfield, too, I’m sure), and our backup’s a guy who’s played LESS than Tereshinski!!!
I have faith in Richt’s play-calling and offensive game-planning. But our defense has shown signs of weakening against the rush, of late, and that has to be addressed and reversed if we have ANY chance against Florida. Our secondary needs to grab some picks, and our o-line needs to allow Tereshinski (or Barnes if he looks better) to see the field and for our backs to pop some long gains.
Ironically, as I rushed to the GeorgiaDogs.com website to get some info on Tereshinski, I clicked his link on their depth chart… and got his DAD’s bio. Oops. (Go to their roster, and you’ll get the right link.)
Hey Tornado, how many did ya’ll beat Duke by last year?

bring up bile and who should arrive but gasr1. the mcl injury isnt as important as the acl but as found out by vick it takes away a lot of the mobility of the type qb shockley is. once injured it is possible to suffer significant injury when stressed over the six weeks to healing.
gee im sorry gastr1 i guess you forgot the many years of LOSING to the gators when you should have won and what program has held a national championship last. is your question answered? i think there were a few years that uga even lost to little ole tech.
i really like you guys when you arent up against tech but i think even though you are undefeated you may now be looking at three losses if you arent able to play better. your schedule tightens up with only tech and uk as probables especially if shock is slowed. face it at this time if you guys arent playung in atl new years you have lost a great opportunity when the sec is down.

The SEC is down? We have 6 teams in the top 20. All year I’ve heard how the “SEC is down” but the results on the field don’t show it.
As for UGA, we will be fine. This is a very talented team that is very beat up. It is very possible that we could lose to UF. However we have an off week after that and should (hopefully) be healthy for AU. That happens and we coast into the dome against Bama/LSU.

Before the game I listened to a Little Rock sports reporter describe McFadden as a Herschel Walker who can cut and thought, Huh? I don’t think Huh? anymore.
It would have been a more convincing win with Shockley however. He couldn’t have stopped McFadden but there would have been more scoring on the Dogs’ side and Richt limited Joe T’s performance today and has said as much.
golden, most Dog fans feel as you do, we don’t hate our rivals, we just hate Tennessee. I’m sure you see most of the trash talking is by the same people all the time.
Yes however, I do feel we are a top five team. As of the moment, we are simply a top five team whose QB will be out for at least 1 and possibly all three of our traditional rivalries and whose defense is now down to it’s 4th string in some key positions. As you said, we are blessed with depth, it is just the injuries after today have become mind bogling but, we should have a couple of key people back next week.
Either way we will just take it one week at a time from here on and what will be, will be.

Hey golden, you like to give some back-handed compliments. I would rather you just be the out-right jerk you are trying to be. Here is a new one for you, me.
We are a #4 team with an injured quarterback. That is your answer. We are a #4 team with a bunch of injuries on defense. We are #4 team with a lot of backups moving into playing position. And we are about to play the Gators in a game that could well decide the SEC East and possibly the whole conference.
You, golden, are an unranked team riding middle-to-back on your own side of the ACC when you were making noises about deciding the ACC this year. Your starting quarterback is suspect, as is the primary players at most every position.
And oddly enough, you are talking smack on our blog. My message is: until we face each other and decide who is best on the field, leave off your trash talking, it only sounds like sour grapes from someone who hasn’t been able to beat UGA since Richt took the controls.

man i agree geechee the vol fans are the worst. i had to live in east tn for ten years, fortunately alabama would quiet them down most years then it was spurrier. however, it was insufferable the year they won all, they even en masse brought out those silly orange car flags on july 4th.
yeah, it is week to week and you guys look like a cat with nine lives. i hope you do get healthy in time to play your schedule as the ad dooley set you guys up pretty good if the injury bug doesnt lay you out.
i did have a good laugh when larry blamed the attrition and lack of depth on throwing out too many players in the spring. that is another story that i hope doesnt catch up with you in two years because that is when you feel it. never can tell what the man munson will say next.
additionally, i hope tech can at least be competitive when you arrrive in nov. if you go back my point was each institution has its woes but lets not pile on. we had to play without a qb against an up and coming team and then had to play a team higher rated than you guys with a qb coming out of the hospital and prematurely playing with guts recovering from viral encepalitis. hopefully shock wont put himself a greater risk than necessary.
garnted youll be top five if you win out but not until. the rest of it is passing gas like the gastr1 dude. grin not concealed.

andy mighty touchey and possesive my man. this is furmans blog i do believe, not the dog blog. the dog blog was probably a good spot to go to, to laugh at your institutional control issues during the summer that larry alluded to today and as you did “richt controls”. and yes you do the same with ours. chill dude, life is too short.
i am really pulling for dj this year as he exemplifies college athletics and take it easy on ball as he may get the most out of his talent as david green did if not more. he has ordinary arm strength, is undersized and he sometimes finds a way to make something happen through will to make something happen, desire to win and athleticism.
ultimately, this game should be about the kids not the faithful projecting themselves onto it to feel better in their lives but it wont be because of the big bucks. again, my compliments to bisher for not taking the negative route that bradley, terrance et. al do. it was there for the taking, i think he understands what this is about.
so, i guess that makes me a jerk. ever hear of the mirror of projection? you find in others what you are most uncomfortable about in yourself.
peace, andy

Yes, I understand it. It means you keep bringing up our off-season troubles when what you are really thinking about is Houston and his federal drug case, right.
DJ’s arm undersized? You must be thinking of Ball. DJ winged it for a 70 yard throw before he went down today. I am not your man, and you are still trying to act cool while dealing out back-handed compliments.
You, meanwhile, are trying to make yourself feel better about Tech’s current season by gloating about DJ being hurt.
I don’t project onto the Dawgs. I root for them, and always have. And I can only assume you are rooting for your team on you would not be on this blog playing wise man.

Reporter: But what did y’all talk about personally……?
Tyson Browning : I just wanted to ask him, first of all, what did they tell him. He told me what they told him (that he would be out 3 – 4 weeks), and I said, but what is your thinking? He said, I’ll be ready to go next week and I believe him. I know him personally because we’ve been roomates for four years now. I know he’s a competitor and if he says he’ll be ready to go, I believe him.

go back and read andy i was referring to ball not shock and i assure you i never want to see anyone hurt. as a matter of fact the iromy is an mcl injury stopped me from playing football in high school, my coach refused to acknowlege it and i ended up with a more significant injury.
again what you see in others is what you know about yourself, so must i assume you must gloat when others go down since you overtly make that assumption about me?
now, i hope you wont make it contentious what i said about green that he probably got more out of his athletic talent than most and shamlessly compared him to ball. it was ball who is undersized, doesnt have a great arm which is shown in the fact he has trouble with the out patterns and overthrows them or steers them into the ground whenever he has to gun it out there but has somehow gotten a lot out of his team that has just a few really good players and maybe one great one. where tech stands in the scheme of things is they get more from a few skill players than most teams and shouldnt have beaten auburn but they did.
andy it is about the kids, they are amateurs and really should be respected for their efforts not degraded in any form nor should any injury be gloated upon. by the way the back up qb made two beautiful passes i just wonder why mr didnt allow him more opportunities. part of the plan to get ready to surprise the gators i guess, another insufferable group like the ut folks.

“garnted youll be top five if you win out but not until.”
Sorry to disagree with that but, we are top five now, check the paper. Monday morning check it again if you need to be sure. As far as whatever Munson says next, it will be the truth. He’s biased but he’s not dishonest.
Yes the school did not admit five players because of grades though, one of those will be admitted this summer, and Grant from Arkansas was not admitted last year because he sexually assaulted a female student when he was in the tenth grade. Does Tech not have any minimum standards for athletes?

Andy, he probably won’t make it next week but then again, it fits in with what Robin posted above. And as Mike posted, we are fortunate enough to be able to lose next week if it comes to that and then move on. Besides, Joe T’s situation won’t be the same as today, He’ll have a week to work with Richt and Bobo.

Thanks for the personal put-downs, tornado. I haven’t even logged in for about three weeks and a pretty mild-mannered response warrants personal attacks and a change of subject to how inferior we are to your more recent “national champions.” Keep hanging your hat on that one; as long as Gailey’s your coach that’s all you’ll have. I’d rather be bilious than a loser.

I’m hoping that the defense can bounce back. Hopefully getting Taylor and Anderson back will help. Jackson looked bad on the third down play where he missed a tackle and the following long run for a TD where he hit Mcfadden but didn’t wrap him up. Poor tackling (which is unusual for these Dawgs) is usually a sign of a flat team. If the defense comes to play like they have most of the year we can still win.
I hope Shock can come back but if he can’t I think Joe T will be okay. I think the coaches will adjust.
Aggravating though— seems like every year we come into the Florida game beat up and they have a bye week, Sure would like to see that changed.

as for the indiscretions cant and dont deny or defend techs issues and commend houston for standing up this past week, hope people forgive and definitely feel for the uga kid who didnt have a car/license to get back and forth to school and his responsibilities that left him looking bad this summer. the institutions and the ncaa use these kids and should offer stipends and have scholarships extend beyond playing years to assure the students get their due who need it.

on to some real issues…Well, we can’t change florida’s schedule, but it is better than it used to be when we played fla, aub, and tech in a row with an off week between aub and tech.
We do have a favorable schedule this year, but that’s ok considering the toughies the last two years with LSU in the mix instead of Miss St. And next year we get Colorado instead of Boise St, although that isn’t much of an upgrade, as the Big 12 just sucks out loud (although texas is the real deal). I didn’t get to see the game today, but I wonder if there wasn’t an inevitable degree of distraction with DJ’s injury and a desire, as Richt admitted, to just get out with the w that would certainly have been felt by the whole team.
Fl will be prepared but they aren’t very good. Does anyone know if Golston, Anderson, and Taylor will be back for Fl? I think if so we win, even if Tershinski doesn’t light it up.

The talk here about everything being OK because Shockley is out for “only” one game needs to end. In the NFL, one game is OK. When you are competing for a NCAA title, one game is your season. If Georgia loses to Florida next week, the season becomes a quest for the SEC title- nothing more. Shockley going down has done the BCS a huge favor.

Gritz Blitz, et al,
I, for one, won’t be disappointed IF Georgia can’t muster an undefeated season and/or national championship this year. Barring an unforseen COLLAPSE, this team, in a year we all figured would be a “rebuilding” season, will represent the SEC East in the Conference Championship.
Who, among us, realistically expected that? I find it a little ironic that there wree SOOOOOO many D.J. doubters out there before the season began, and now Bulldog Nation’s national title hopes ride on his knee recovery.
Some of ya’ll rabid Dawgs should be more appreciative of the kids who strap on the gear for your beloved ‘Dawgs.
Anyhow, we’re the 4th ranked team in the country because our defense has been solid (run game notwithstanding the past two weeks), because our run game has been spectacular (though it needs a pass game to keep defense guessing) AND because we have a talented, versatile QB who knew how to run that offense.
D.J. not being in the ‘Cocktail is a loss, no doubt. But this is a TEAM, and he has teamMATES who have to step up on his behalf. I think this could be a character-building week for Mark Richt’s squad, and I wouldn’t want another coach heading it up. He knows how to mold character.

Murphy you’re right. Our defense will have to step it up and create some turnovers to win this game. JoeT is a very smart young man, he just needs to settle down and make good decision on his progressions. Our running game is a must. But that gun-spread option takes too long to develop. I like it when we line up in I-formation and just play smash mouth football. I think Fla is still weak against the run. Hopefully, Shock will be back for the Auburned game. Go Dawgs!

you all don’t remeber what I said, “Ga. had better concentrate not only on every game one at a time but every series and EVERY play. Yesterday proved what I was trying to warn everyone one about. We don’t get Munson out here(I sorely miss that) but if what everyone one is saying about his concerns then he and I, 3000 miles apart, were on the same wave length. I grew up in Jacksonville and know how important the GAME is. The overiding question for the week and the GAME is how conservative will MR be. Let Joe T. use what talent he has to the max and don’t hold him back. We know what the Blights will do. Would be every smart to put a spy not on Leak but on DeShawn Wynn

Ron’s right: we Dawg fans should really be pleased with what this team has accomplished (and believe me, I want another National Championship as much as anybody). We NEED to win 2 of 3 remaining conference games, to get back to Atlanta. That would make this a successful year. Remember, preseason polls had us behind FL, TN, and LSU.
I don’t know if the SEC is up or down… it’s hard to judge with so few meaningful interconference games (a discussion for another day, I guess); but there are no great offenses in the conference, and I think if we get a couple of bodies back our defense is as good as any in the league. (Arkansas IS a great running team, and our middle WAS pretty depleted yesterday).
I think Joe T. will surprise some folks next weekend, and Florida’s offense is not up to its usual standards; 17 points might just win that game, and I think Joe T can accomplish that.

How is Shockley feeling right now, is he up for the FLA game? I hope he gets better soon, because I’m sure that Tech will look forward to beating him more than Joe Terewho. Please send him my regards on his mcl injury. And I’m being serious, he is a very impressive QB. And while you are at it, tell him that Feeding Time For The Gators will begin at 3:30 pm next Saturday. And also, tell him his luck has run out and it is time to put the big mutt to sleep. Golden Tornado,
Do your homework. Only two years in the last 15 were the Bulldogs favored to win over Florida and lost. 2002 and 2003. Even then, Florida was a top 25 team. Not Duke, # 110 in the country or NC State, 1-4 in the ACC. Guess who the one is against. Routinely Florida was a top 5 school every year Georgia played them until Spurrier left.
To compare Georgia losing to Florida all those years to the yearly collapses of Georgia Tech is folly. Don’t forget that Georgia always has to play that stupid game in Jacksonville, only an hour or so from Gainesville. Don’t know why they don’t play that game in Atlanta every other year or just go back to a home at home. But I’ve digressed.

sub683 you didnt digress but you either began to whine or make excuses for what happens in j’ville. it is just as loud there on the red side as it is on the blue/orange side. no home field advantage as northern fla has a lot of ga folks. i’ve been at the cocktail party many times supporting uga and seem to remember many years that fla couldnt compete with uga before spurrier.
go back and read. i never said our garden was perfect but that you have a superior program with an excellent qb and we struggle to hold our heads above the dukes, vandy’s and the like because there is no hiding the academics. please dont infer that i have said uga is inferior as the academics are superior to almost all state u’s but there are ways to provide a broader curriculum to be more inviting to prospective students.
even during the “great” o’leary years we would lose to a team we shouldn’t, like you said. the margin of difference is smaller for tech than uga. i can accept those losses but when you trip you still have enough depth to win. one man down at tech is a huge hole to fill. you may fill it this year when shock went down as you struggled to beat a team that lost to usc by 67 points. does that mean there is that much difference between one and four? not smack, just observations and no need to back up anything tf#1, they are superior in every way as they pointed out and never disagreed with throughout. interesting. even said that i hope we can be competitive in nov. as i dont like the 40 point blowouts and really done expect to win each year or any year unless uga is really down.

Dear Furman,
As a lifelong New Orleans Saints fan, I’m appalled by owner Tom Benson’s actions following Hurricane Katrina. In our time of need, he’s trying to take away one of the only things we can find joy in – our beloved Saints. While everyone is speculating about where the team will end up, no one is really bringing to light the dirty things Benson is doing in New Orleans.
Benson is attempting to break his lease on the Saints Metairie, La. practice facility – a lease which costs him a whopping $1 annually. He claims the facility was damaged by Hurricane Katrina and later “trashedâ€? by National Guard troops and FEMA workers. This simply isn’t true and the following link will provide you with a news story from our local CBS affiliate which proves the building has no damage and is virtually spotless: http://www.wwltv.com/perl/common/vi…m/102105lee.wmv
Benson needs to be exposed before it is too late. I would like to suggest a piece which would answer the following questions:
“What was the actual ticket sale staffing in Baton Rouge when the team announced the four games there, and when was it increased and to what?”
“Why has the team done no print, radio or TV advertising of the Baton Rouge games whatsoever, compared to the normal in-season advertisement in New Orleans and what was done in San Antonio? Wouldn’t that help sales?”
“How have the firing of Arnie Fielkow and the resignation of Connie Cowal affected the organization’s ability to execute on tickets sales and distribution?”
“Are Mr. Benson or Rita Benson LeBlanc going to get as personally involved in ticket sales and marketing as they are in San Antonio?”
“Is Mr. Benson going to make appeals to the Louisiana business community like he did in San Antonio?”
“Does Mr. Benson intend to donate 8,000 tickets to this game as he did in San Antonio?”
“There appeared to be substantial publicity for at-stadium sales for the Alamodome games. Any reason that wasn’t done in Baton Rouge?”
“What is the organization’s response to the comments by the mayor of San Antonio that sales in Baton Rouge would be a ‘disaster’ and that San Antonio would outsell Baton Rouge two to one? Is that going to happen? As the director of ticket sales, how did that make you feel?”
I haven’t seen anyone in the national media do a story on these issues, and they really should. People should know the truth about what’s really going on in New Orleans, and Tom Benson should be exposed for the ways he is trying to take our team away from us.
Many Thanks,
Dennis Labure River Ridge, La.

Furman Bisher has one thing going for him and that is his longevity. There aren’t as many people around now who remember his earlier days, when his loyalty to Ga. Tech was created and cemented. Few remember that the late Coach Bobby Dodd promised a football schlorship to Bisher”s son on the day he was born. Only when this became public, was the schlorship rescinded. Few remember that Bisher was a scource for the infamous and totally untrue Saturday Evening Post story conerning coach Bear Bryant and Coach Wallace Butts conspiring to “fix” a football game. Proven to be a total fabrication- this story put the Post out of business, but Bisher had done his damage. He was a sports writer who was bought and paid for early in his career and has never wavered from his pro-Tech—-anti-Ga. path. Do us all a favor—-Please—-RETIRE.

We lizzards wish DJ well in his recovery and are confident, despite the drivel that is being posted against Meyer, Leak and the Gator Nation, that we will find a way to overcome all of our problems and eke out a W… You see, we really do not wear mullets and jean shorts, nor drink any more(or less)Jack Daniels than Dawgs do, and there are far too many such disparaging remarks that exhibit a lack of class and sportsmanship here on these Dawg Blogs, so: Let us put aside these petty differences and hatred for a while, join together in the name of good sportsmanship, and agree that we will never agree on anything but we will do so with a little class….
Goooo Gators!
