All of a sudden, I get smart

Jeff Schultz

As we come to the end of a three-day school week, courtesy of Gov. Globey Head (inflate to 12 pounds), please take a moment during this light college week to recognize the comedic talents of Maxwell Smart and the Harris Interactive poll.

For if Don Adams hadn’t passed on to that great Cone of Silence in the sky this week, I’m sure he’d be asking … “Would you believe me if I told you this poll is surrounded by 200 Control agents?â€?

No.

“Would you believe a German Shepherd with an overbite?

No.

“Would you believe 0-4 Idaho was given five points?

No.

“No really. I’m serious about that one.

The inaugural Harris poll, the BCS’s road to credibility — Ha! Yeah, I got a million of ’em — came out this week. Congratulations to the 114 voting members, some with a pulse (although it was John Mackovic, the former coach, who observed: “To tell the truth, I did not know a couple of them were still alive.â€?) The Harrisians voted USC No. 1. Visionaries.

Most of the yuks centered on those schools also receiving votes. Illinois tallied 13. Illinois is 2-2 and coming off a 61-14 loss to Michigan State — at home. Its defense is ranked 106th in the nation. That’s two spots behind Custer.

Idaho is 0-4. It lost to Hawaii, which had lost two games, 105-31, give or take an organ. The Vandals received five points in the Harris poll. If they lose to Utah State this week, they’ll move into the top 20 and become BCS bowl eligible.

One of two things likely happened. Five Harris voters ranked Idaho 25th in the country. Or one ranked the school 21st. Harris officials hope it’s the latter. It’s a lot easier to hide one body.

Georgia and Tech are both off this week. But we do have some leak-proof investments.

Would you believe …

Florida at Tuscaloosa Correctional Institute: What is this — Talk Stupid week in Alabama? Presumably heady from the Tide’s best start in several prison terms, linebacker DeMeco Ryans said, “We always win big games here. Umm. Huh? Actually, factually, Bammy has never beaten a Top 5 team at Bryant-Denny Stadium (0-5) and is 1-7 against ranked teams in the last two years under Mike Shula. He’s done a nice job this season, but Florida is ranked, unlike four previous opponents. Reality check: Gators cover 3 1/2.

Middle Tenn. St. at Vanderbilt: Turns out dissolving the athletic department was all the football program needed to take off. Win this and the Commies are 5-0 for the first time since 1943 and will be one short of bowl eligible for the first time since ’82. Must be cocky. Even scheduled softy Georgia as their homecoming in two weeks. Nurse: oxygen! Vandy covers 16.

South Carolina at Auburn: Last week Steve Spurrier beat up Troy. In a previous life, Troy was a chance to fatten stats. Now it’s a diversion. Like ’shrooms. Spurrier (0-2) has never lost three SEC games in a row, but then he had never coached in Columbia, either. Since losing to Tech, Auburn has outscored three opponents, 128-17. Tigers, your Troy just arrived. Auburn covers 13 1/2.

LSU at Missy State: After blowing a 21-0 lead at home last week to Tennessee, LSU coach Les Miles defied all odds. He made it out of the parking lot. Forget living up to Nick Saban. Suddenly, he’s living down to Gerry DiNardo. Losses like this sting a while. And Starkville’s not the place to be with a hangover. LSU wins but take the Bulldogs and 15.

Colonel Sanders at Tennessee: Nothing gets past Phil Fulmer. After Rick Clausen came off the bench to lead the comeback at LSU, Fulmer said he doesn’t plan to rotate quarterbacks anymore. Genius. Mississippi, meanwhile, will be missing a quarterback and a linebacker this week, both of whom suffered broken middle fingers. So now there’s two less players flipping off the coach. Vowels win, but won’t cover 20.

Virginia Tech at West Virginia: Marcus Vick. Not bad for a right-hander. Hokies cover 10 1/2.

REPORT CARD Last week: 5-1 straight up, 3-3 against the line. To date: 21-5 straight up, 14-12 against the line. Lock of the week: Deadbolt.

Glad I don’t put the mortgage on your picks because you are horrible. I think my 5 year old could do just as better than you.

BTW, the play on words is not cool…when will you learn?

I think that the name “Curley” might be a more appropriate reference for the governor because of his Curley-like appearance and behavior.

Jim…why do you read this column if you don’t like Jeff’s “play on words”. I think its a nice change to some of the corpse-like articles I read from other writers. I’m surprised someone who is 21-5 in their picks is referred to as horrible???

I see mentioning Mel Brooks caused you to reflect on Maxwell Smart, Mel’s contribution to the idiot box. Ah, Adams, what a true clown he was. I’ve noticed though he’s trying to keep a low profile since the Dooley debacle.

I’d forgotten all about that new poll till you mentioned it. I had to see it for myself. I went to espn’s website. They didn’t even bother to list it with the other polls so I guess they are in agreement with you. I noticed they did give the BCS a second slap in the face however by ranking these same Idaho Vandals in their ten worst teams poll.

There was an article on another new poll I was unaware of which is made up of a virtual who’s who of former coaching greats. It was started by some attorney in the ATL. I guess tying up traffic on Peachtree with his Hummer still left him feeling unfulfilled. My question to you is what does this say about the BCS that this group of 16 elite former coaches spurns their poll but jumps at the chance to vote in Joe Blow’s Top 25.

I thought you’d find the reasons Joe Blow gave for starting his poll particularly interesting. He felt “the experts are too busy with coaching duties and the writers didn’t have the expertise LMAO

VT at WVA— Now there’s a great place for an upset. If you are wrong on that one, the Dogs could move into the top five by virtue of watching TV. The concerned citizen in me however wonders how the burning of Morgantown would affect an insurance industry already reeling from two hurricanes and worries Karl Rove might then have FEMA dispatch Brownie to head up efforts in West Virginia as payback for throwing the 1960 election. Just joking Matthew

I noticed you are starting to drop clues like a Beatles album. “Losses like this sting a while. And Starkville’s not the place to be with a hangover. Finally we get an explanation about Bradley’s column.

Schultz’s lack of comic ability is only matched by his horrible record against the line. Schultz your joke that refers to Universities as Correctional Institutes isn’t funny now and hasn’t been funny the last three years that you have been driving it into the ground. And if you ask me why do I read his column, my answer is that it is pure morbid curiosity like looking at a bad car wreck while you pass it on the highway. You know what you will see will disgust you but yet you can’t look away

Oh Jeff knows me…but he’s so important writing an unfunny column he wouldn’t remember—but let’s sum up why the AJC pays him. If he ain’t makin’ you cornpones mad, he ain’t doin’ his job. He’s like a troll on a message board—if you start ignoring him, maybe they’d finally fire him. In fact, the only reason I’m here now is to to see how badly he insulted the readers today. I’m not as much a fool as I am curious—this is my second suffering of his column in ‘05. Real heady stuff, as usual.

Jeff, move north already. You can be doubly miserable, doubly misanthropic, and your schedenfreude would actually be celebrated as a virtue. Try Rhode Island or Boston-area—the kind of place where a nuclear strike would be merciful.

Meanwhile, your editor actually thinks these kinds of comments mean you’re doing a good job. You guys are SOOOOO smart! You’ve got us fooled reeeel good.

Name the players under Mike Shula that have been in trouble with the law.

Why call it Tuscaloosa Correctional Institute? I could understand spoofing on probation or coaching turnover but player discipline is not an issue there.

Jeff,

Is there really a need to degrade both yourself and this newspaper by making up silly names such as Missy St and Tuscaloosa Correctional Institute? Do you have a problem spelling the word “university?” I don’t really know why I expect more from you or this newspaper but I promise it is the last time a pay for a copy. Be a journalist, not a comedian. For as much as you are wrong in your picks I understand that you need to liven things up and be a little entertaining. But try to stay professional about it. Pick the teams, give a reason for your picks and leave it at that. Don’t be such a jerk about it.

I don’t understand why you would call The University of Alabama the Tuscaloosa Correctional Institute. Unlike Georgia, Tennessee, Florida State, etc., etc., Alabama players under Mike Shula (and really, as far back as you want to go) do not have trouble with the law. It may be “talk studpid week”, but you seem to be the one doing the most blabbering.

I have grown tired of reporters like you who have to make cute little negative and degrading comments to get noticed. Aren’t you confident enough in your writing skills and in your ability to analyze games that you can write in such a way that is respectful to the combatants and at the same time, relevant to those who look for professional opinions on the game? You give no insight whatsoever as to why you say Florida will win; perhaps you don’t know the game well enough to provide a reasoned analysis.

By the way, you insinuate that Demeco Ryans is “stupid”. Actually, he is an all-sec and academic all-sec performer with a GPA of 3.5 Care to post your athletic credentials or your GPA?

Boy, Rodney summed it up perfectly. The only reasons Jeff and the Reverand Farrakahn keep their jobs at the AJC is because they somehow find a way to get people ticked off with their stupidity. I don’t believe I have ever read a thought provoking article from Mr. Schultz, partly because they are raerely if ever informative but mostly because I skip articles that try to incorporate as many puns as possible in them. Soooo funny those puns! HAha..hum. Of course when you have the likes of Furman “I love the ‘40’s” Bisher and Mark “Did I just overstate the obvious, again?” Bradley rounding out the corp of writers, its not like one writer’s poor work is going to look bad in comparison. It just goes to show that if you can somehow manage to put your thoughts to paper…and accept a low enough salary…you too can write opinion columns for the AJC! Way to go guys, with you around we can always look down on Mississippi!

Jeff, You do not know anyting about Bama b/c if you would do research as most journalsist do these days you would see that Bama has had no discipline problems in a number of years. If you would pull your head out of UGA’s butt you would see the world as everbody else sees it. I have always questioned the AJC’s sports department and it is clear why they are never mentioned in the likes of many other large newspapers. Maybee with the problems @ Tribune the AJC can hire a knowledgable sports columnist.

You are such a dumbass. How any professional journal hired you is beyond me. This just goes to show how newspapers across the country are becoming irrelevant and have to reverted to fireworks and flamboyant articles to draw viewers.

You obviously didn’t do your research. Bama was in everyone of those games and all were close. We didn’t lay down or get the beat down. In our 4-9 season we had the 1 Oklahoma Sooners on the ropes and lost 20-13. I’d say that is getting up for the big games.

Also, Demeco isn’t stupid he’s been on the academic honor roll for years. You sir are the idiot, that’s why you work at the AJC doing sports, what a tough job. I could do your job in 25 minutes easy. Rodney in New York is right. The only reason Schultz is still employed at the AJC is because he gets everyone one worked up about his insipid jokes and offensive remarks. The problem is that with only one newspaper in Atlanta we don’t have the luxury of showing our disdain by taking our business elsewhere. So, I propose if we are truly sick of Schultz’s inability to explain his picks logicaly (Thanks for pointing it out, Frank) let alone make correct picks consistently we need to start writing whoever is in charge of the sports dept. and ask for Schultz’s column to be taken out of the AJC. C’mon AJC please but someone in there that can explain why they think UF will beat Alabama by using intelligent insight about the game of football not because of one factoid they dug up and framed around a shameful joke that makes fun of a college kid. Schultz, this kid doesn’t deserve your snide comments. Save it for professionals that are pompous loudmouths and you can start with yourself.

Jeff Schultz, you deserve the Congressional Medal of Honesty! Any writer who can look at the red elephants of tuscaLOSER and “tell it like it is” is my hero. For those outside the state of Alabama, the dementia of Bama fans is never fully realized. 99% are delusional, egotistical, self-important, offensive, and vulgar. The remaining 1% would exhibit only two characteristics from that list. I have a Ph. D. from The University of Alabama and I am ashamed to say these “fans”—who have nothing in common with the school other than its name on a ball cap…which was probably given to them or found on the roadside—degrade the university. When referencing game day on campus, my head professor would say that the campus wasn’t fit for “intelligent humans!” I am proud to say that I am NOT a Bama fan. I couldn’t possibly be one; I still have all of my own teeth! And Ryan, I agree Todd doesn’t represent the institution well, but he is iconic of the typical Bama fan. GO GATORS!

You, sir, apparently think highly of yourself as is shown in your title of this article. However, I would say that “you” and “smart” in the same sentence constitutes an oxymoron. (Or in your case, just moron!) How dare you refer to an institution of higher education as a correctional institute! In reference to Alabama, you may not even refer to the football program as such; you should ask Phil Fulmer and Steve Spurrier about that. Alabama is a fine institution of great prestige and standards (which you have none of). I fully expect either a retraction of your remark and a national apology in your next article or I expect nothing less than you losing your job! There is no place for your prejudice and insane remarks in a newspaper as heralded as the Atlanta Journal Constitution. If you have nothing better to do than bash a recovered program with very clean and respectful players, then you, sir, should consider a change in occupation.

Being offended by anything Schultzy says is like taking offense to Howard Stern. You should know what you’re going to get before you listen to anything he says, and if you get offended its your own fault for ever paying attention. His agenda revolves around creating controversy in an apparently witty manner. If fans respond as an angered mass they only give credence and influence to what he says. ‘bama took the bait. As for those who think Schultz is a UGA fan, they must have missed all the references over the years to the Dawgs as “chihuahuas” or “puppies,” etc.. It would seem from his minimalist approach to sports journalism that he’s never experienced football first hand in a big-time environment like Athens

WOW ! Im not going to even start on how smart or dumb I think you are .The facts speak for themselves. I hope your not a bettin man cause that 35k will be gone in a hurry with a record like 5-1 straight up, 3-3 against the line. To date: 21-5 straight up, 14-12 against the line ..straight up doesnt count ! I agree for the people who know absolutely nothing about football or lines like the guy at the beggining of the posts that talks about how good 21-5 is lets do the math ,follow along now Georgia folk at 6 $100 bets losing 3 leaves you owing money and the great 14-12 well that still leaves you in the negative ……..So let me get this right you write about sports every day and thats the best you can do! One would gather from that ,that you dont really know a whole lot about the game because a monkey could get 50% right thats statistics .Just goes to show that it obviously doesnt take a well informed an or qualified individual to make assinine remarks!!!!!I tell you what I will be back afer the UF Ua game and if Bama loses I’ll write about how great you are !If they win you quit making picks ,YOUR OBVIOUSLY NOT QUALIFIED TOO !!!

Why do all these cry babies still read Jeff’s column? A lot of Bama fans sound offended. lol. I bet all of them will read the next column. I thought Alabama has numerous newspapers. I guess not!!! Tuscaloosa Correctional Institute. LMAO.

I think alabama is back and they will beat florida this week to prove it, and may play uga in the sec championship, which by the way GT has more national championships than uga 4 to 1

I know that you all are sound asleep by now, but I’m still supprised that Jeff hasn’t picked up MR’s comment that “boy afterday studying the games tapes we had a lot og down field shots and didn’t take them”. Coach you just made the point that a lot of fans are saying and handed down and an indictment of your self. Until you hire an offensive coach and stay out of his way Ga. will never back into another S.E.C. Championship. I respect and like MR. very much, but it’s sad that he can’t see the forest for the trees. One other thing. Those “hard hitting safties” had better start thinking about how to play defence and not just hard hits. It’s going to bite us big time if the coaches don’t pound this down their throats

Jeff, this is truly incredible. You seemingly have attracted a cult like following of anti-fans in numbers usually only experienced by critics of Howard Stern. The comments however are so truly unique that, I can only describe them as; it seems you have been experimenting again in the Young Frankenstein laboratory after indulging in the aforementioned ‘shrooms and achieved these strange results by cross breeding the Stern fans with those of Eric Robert Rudolf.

This explains why the ATL was the only major city where people never seemed “to get” what exactly other people found so funny about Seinfeld.

People, People…..Why are you working yourselves up so much because of an article in the newspaper? Is your life that void of substance that you feel compelled to defend the honor of a university whose campus you probably have never even set foot on? (It cracks me up to hear pot-bellied, inbred hillbillies, who when referring to the Alabama football team, speak in such terms as “WE are going to play well this week.” WE??? What, are you a coach? A former player? No…..THEY might play well this week, but you are going to wake up at the crack of noon, park your horribly out of shape near-corpse on the couch and prepare for an afternoon of heavy drinking and potential wife beating, depending on the outcome of the game. There is no correlation or sense of possession/belonging involved. There could be no larger difference in the athletes on the field and the antithesis of althleticism that is your body. They have rippling muscles…you have layers of fat each day that you didn’t notice the day before. So please….dispense with the “WE” references. And Alabama fans, I know it is tempting to come to our “big city newspaper” and talk trash, but if you do so, please use a dictionary. Perusing the above posts makes me realize that a Georgia Public School education is not as bad as it may seem on the surface. (Did that guy really call Jeff Schultz a LOOSER? HAHAHA.) To clear up the confusion, it’s LOSER. Now go ahead and write back, Bama “Fans”. When you finish cleaning the crayon markings off the monitor, realizing that is not the way to submit a post, get out a dictionary and reply in the conventional manner.

What does an Alabama woman say after making love?

“Get off me Daddy, you’re crushin’ mah cigarettes.”

Gators by 13, Alabama wives/sisters to be beaten this evening, only to accost the police officers dispatched to protect her. “He didn’t hit me TOO hard…I deserved it..”

“potential” wife beating? ANyway it is incredibly insulting however to suggest that an Alabama gentleman would beat his wife simply to celebrate a ‘Bama victory when you know as well as me that, sometimes they just don’t listen.

Just so you understand, the poster can to spell. He was only using the short form of the term “Hang Looser” which is a term used to describe a member of the Alabama surfing community, who gather to ride the huge waves which are native to Mobile bay.

“Florida at Tuscaloosa Correctional Institute: What is this â€â€? Talk Stupid week in Alabama? Presumably heady from the Tide’s best start in several prison terms, linebacker DeMeco Ryans said, “We always win big games here.â€? Umm. Huh? Actually, factually, Bammy has never beaten a Top 5 team at Bryant-Denny Stadium (0-5) and is 1-7 against ranked teams in the last two years under Mike Shula. He’s done a nice job this season, but Florida is ranked, unlike four previous opponents. Reality check: Gators cover 3 1/2.”

Gators will cover the 3.5. Take South Carolina in a straight upset. Please keep picking Alabama’s opponent. It’s worked out great so far. And the prison jokes are so darned funny. You should quit this sill sportwriter gig ( I use the term sportwriter in only the broadest since of the word) and go to work for Letterman.
