Weekend predictions: Dogs, Tech win
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Lou Holtz, former football coach and still 10 percent humanoid, with the rest meat-byproducts, recently predicted South Carolina would upset Georgia.
I find this amusing, though not because Holtz doesn’t even have his own Friday column, and therefore his projections aren’t considered as scientific absolutes, like, say, the theory of relativity and Weekend Predictions. Rather, this is funny because in his 174 years of coaching, Holtz never once predicted a victory for his own team, even when he knew he was coming off a really good illegal offseason.
“This week we play Georgia. If we don’t lose the game 92-6, it’s only because a meteor crushed the team bus on the way to the stadium, Holtz would say. “By the way, if you’re with the NCAA, I just saw Lou Holtz and he went that-a-way.
This week, Georgia plays South Carolina.
Now, doesn’t that sound a lot better than saying, “This week, Georgia plays Steve Spurrier?
With Florida, Spurrier went 11-1 against Georgia.
With Florida, Spurrier went 6-0 against Ray Goff and his eventual remains, and then planted a big wet one on Jim Donnan, 47-7.
With Florida, Spurrier beat Georgia in Sanford Stadium 10 years ago, 52-17. (Somebody threw a cup of tobaccy juice at him after the game. Of course, they missed and hit a security guy.)
With Florida. With Florida. With Florida.
Spurrier is not with Florida.
With South Carolina, is he.
With gout, he might as well be.
The Dogs are favored by 18 points over South Carolina. If the line goes any higher, the SEC mandates they play at least one series blindfolded.
The last time a Spurrier team was this lightly regarded?
“Should’ve been probably when we played the Eagles a few times,â€? he said. The Washington Redskins — a mutation of gout.
Carolina opened unimpressively against Central Florida. Georgia opened with a first-time starter at quarterback (D.J. Shockley) who threw five touchdowns and ran for another. Holtz opened at Golden Corral, stuffing rolls in his pocket. Or so I hear.
I know. It’s a lot of points. But it’s not Florida.
Dogs cover.
North Carolina at Central Atlanta
Georgia Tech’s defense allowed Auburn quarterback Brandon Cox to have one of those Jeff George-type games: 342 yards, four interceptions, nine brain-seizures. But the Jackets held on for an upset and now find themselves with a national ranking… and are projected to win a game by 12? Welcome to the Achilles’ heel of the Chan Gailey regime. Nothing comes easy. Tech wins, but take the Heels and the points.
Missy State at Auburn
The Tigers opened the season with four interceptions, a fumble and 11 penalties, including five illegal procedures. I’m thinking cyanide would’ve been a lot quicker. War Beagle, baby. Tigers win, but take the other Bulldogs and the 15.
Notre Dame at Michigan
One win and suddenly everybody is rushing to Blockbuster to rent “Knute Rockne: All American. The Irish even had a visit this week from nine-time Stanley Cup-winning coach Scotty Bowman, who told the players: “I may have coached in Michigan, but I don’t root for Michigan. Even Hall of Famers stand on the wrong sideline sometimes. Wolves cover the seven.
Clemson at Maryland
Last season, Clemson beat Miami one week, then lost to Duke the next. The Tigers upset Texas A&M last week. Landing gear is half off at the Esso Station this week. Maryland is somewhere between Duke and breathing. Good enough. Terps win.
Southern Missy at Alabama
A team starts the season with Middle Tennessee State and Southern Miss, it thinks, “2-0. Cool. But that was, “Booo, not “Coooool, players heard when they led only 9-7 late in the first half of a 26-7 win over MTSU. Prepare for four quarters of problems this week. Southern is twice the team Bama faced and has had its resolve tested by Katrina. Upset? No. But close. Take the dozen.

Hahahaha…
Bug, you have a felon-in-waiting in your midst, a drug King Pin if you will, and Schultz has mentioned nary a word about it.
We have guys getting into fights, drinking under age, and doing other college-aged things, things we all do and did in our 20’s even if we don’t want to admit it. And yet, it’s all Schultz wants to talk about.
So give the guy a break. He’s the best columnist here not named Furman Bisher (not that that’s a hard thing to accomplish, with guys like Super Hypocrite Terence Moore leading the dregs of journalism).

Shultz, you are such an idiot. You can have your favorites but don’t trash the names of other schools. Central Atlanta?? Missy State?? Shows why Holtz has had better jobs than you. He treats other schools with respect. You make fun because he doesn’t have his own column. But you are the second rate loser columnist. He gets paid well for his commentary on ESPN to add to all the cash he has collected for coaching all those 174 years.
This is why the rest of the nation regards UGA as a redneck school. All its fans are haters and can only display it by pathetic writers who bash other schools when they have talent that can match Georgia’s.
Wait, I get it now. I saw your picture. You are just jealous that Lou Holtz has more hair than you after his 174 yrs of coaching while you are barely out of your 30’s. Ha Ha Ha, try Rogaine. Maybe then your wife will quit looking at other men with hair while she is at the mall, make that Wal-Mart, spending your little salary.

Redneck school? Are you 12?? Perhaps you a feeling a little inferior??? Or maybe you are feeling a bit light headed today? Why do all of the fans of schools that SUCK have to poke fun at teams that are superior? Your team can’t do it on the field so you want to post crap like this on the internet. Well, This hardly covers for your teams downfalll there little buddy. Your comment about UGA being a redneck school not only makes you an idiot, but a hypocrite as well since you just bashed the columnist for for the same thing. I leave you with one question… will you be seeking mental counseling before this weeks game or after?

UGA is a reneck, hick, sister-marryin’ ag school, and Schultz is an arse. Get over it, those are simply facts.
By the way, you might want to wait until December before you get high and mighty about who is so damn “superior” and which schools “SUCK” before the games are played.

Ease up people. Have you no sense of humor? There are writers who post their predictions like they know all and see all. Jeff makes his posts using a little humor which I find much more entertaining.

MUTT H8R, it’s good to know the Dogs have advanced under Richt to the point that people are jealously hating them. If you really want someone to take out your sister, its best that you don’t tell them how much you hate them and use a little better wording than simply, ‘Somebody take out the trash’.

Wow… getting a little defensive aren’t you? Are these the only “facts” that you know? Where did you learn this crap? Obviously not Tech, since it is well known for it’s academic standards… Newsflashhh!!! I never said anything bad about TECH… I was merely talking to whoever said something about UGA. I didn’t even know who the previous poster was rooting for! This merely proves your ignorance not only about UGA, but other things as well. Take a chill pill there kid! I like Tech and I hope they win every game they play in, except for GA. I am a dawg fan, but this is the first tiem that i have read a column by Schultz. I hope for Tech’s sake you don’t consider yourself a fan because it is ovbvious that you are doubting them, considering the way that you are jumping to conclusions. It is a shame that ANY team has to have a “fan” such as yourself. It’s poor sportsmanship to degrade a team in this manner! UGA didn’t degrade GA TECH, Schultz did and degrading an entire team because of a comment by one person (who by the way is not affiliated with UGA) is ignorant. You obviously don’t like it when people degrade your team!

Jeez, guys. He’s writing a column, making predictions about football games. He’s not talking about your Mama. Lighten up.
(BTW, whatever a “reneck” school is, I don’t know. But Georgia’s Ag school is just one of several highly ranked colleges and schools on the U.Ga. campus. The Law and Business schools, for example, are among the best in the nation, and the Forestry School is considered to be in the top five. Ironic, isn’t it, that the U.Ga. Honors program is almost as large as the Tech undergraduate student body, and with a higher average SAT than Tech’s—by over 100 points? As one last word to the Tech fans who seek solace in denigrating their Big Brother university to the East—you guys may be doing the IS support, but the Georgia grads will be running the company).
Get off your pseudo-academic high horse. Your comments are not rooted in fact, but in the infertile loam of accumulated delusion you call your brain.

Ha Ha Ha…I have the last laugh.
All you idiots who bash me, thinking I’m a Tech fan. I’m a Dawg fan. Got my Masters from UGA in ‘96. I just hate idiots like Schultz who make us look bad. I read and post a lot and all I ever see is how every Dawg fan misspells everything and throws in a statement like ‘I’ll tie that Tech fan to my truck bumper and drag him through Athens on Saturday’ or ‘Remember we were 1980 national champions!!’ which further makes us all look like rednecks because Tech has more national championships than we do and has had one in ‘90’s no matter how you try and justify it. It makes us look bad that a writer has to demean other schools to try and get attention for his favorite and it’s not funny entertainment. Our team should gain the respect it deserves through it’s actions on the field without a writer having to show such bias. That is what makes him an idiot and you a bigger one for buying into it. Geez, I should have misspelled most of this so you could comprehend it better.
Sorry to have verbally whipped your butt, but you asked for it. Now go sit somewhere and pout for a while.

Hey Murf,
You said it exactly but you don’t realize what you said. This is a column and that gives us the right to write what we say and feel. Sorry it bothers you to the point that you have to take out your Thesaurus to be the ‘column police’. I did like the ‘infertile loam of accumulated delusion ‘. Ha Ha Ha like you expect every redneck to know what that meant. I can hear it now, every guy is reading this and asking his wife ‘Hey honey, what is loam?’ and she replies ‘It’s the stuff they make those new soft pillows I got your mom for Xmas.’.
Have fun guys, I’m only doing this to get your infertile loam of accumulated delusions pumping for fun. Ha Ha Ha

As a lifelong Gator, I can see that UGA-USC week will easily become my second-favorite week of the year (after the annual neutering of Puppy Nation in Jacksonville, of course). Every morning this week, I’ve run outside at the crack of dawn, pounced on my copy of the AJC like it’s a David Greene fumble and flipped to the Sports page for my daily trip down memory lane. Article after article about UGA vs. Spurrier, and you can imagine how much fun that’s been for me and so many more of us. Plus, now that the AJC lets us all comment on their columnists’ work online, I get the added bonus of seeing the Jackets fans whine about getting “no respect,” while the Puppies all yap about how dominant they looked last week against the big, bad Broncos from Boise. And save your retorts about Wyoming being just as weak. I know this and readily acknowledge that it was a cupcake game. Take the “18” away from the front of their name, and you just beat Boise State. Having just moved to Georgia from Connecticut, I am absolutely giddy to be living in a state that takes its college football seriously. Every other car I pass on the roads has some type of bug, G, tiger or dog splattered all over it.
As for the academics, I say don’t get too riled up… having lived down the road from Brown and Yale, and not too far from Columbia, NYU and Princeton, I can tell you that we’ll all be working for those guys (most of already do in some shape or fashion). So, my point is, don’t be thin skinned, be glad you have good athletic programs and support the hell out of them. It’s meant to be fun. And hopefully profitable. And, btw I’m taking Spurrier plus 18 this weekend… go Gamecocks

KMartin is on the money. It is all relative. Football does not indicate whether a college is good or not - but it does make its fans feel good about themselves. In Georgia, Emory and Tech will always have a better academic reputation than UGa and yet more residents want to attend UGa than Emory and Tech combined. It is all about who you identify with. Regardless of where you go to school, you might be working for a flunky that happens to have much better connections!

This has been fun reading the comments. I just hope that Tech can keep up there end of the winning bargain so at the end of the season UGA’s strength of schedule looks a little better. Oh never mind they don’t look at the strength of schedule considering that Southern Cal is # 1 every year in that weak conference. I am also glad to see that Oklahoma lost there opener so we don’t have to hear about them getting into another Championship game and getting toasted.

I think Schultz underestimates Spurrier because he underestimated the job George O’Leary has done with UCF. Granted UCF went winless last season. But the program was in shambles when O’Leary arrived and O’Leary suffered the loss of his mother mid-season. That’s behind them now. What I saw of the game was UCF matching effort. SC wasn’t playing poorly, UCF had elevated their level of play. Nonsense you say? Remember O’Leary was a good enough coach to beat UGA three years in a row. A feat not so common, unless your name is Steve Spurrier. UGA may win, but they’ll be disappointed at how close the score will be. Remember, Boise State needed overtime to beat San Jose State last season. So they were most certainly overhyped and overrated.

To jacketsfan. You guys just hate to see that UGA blew Boise off the field. Yall kept thinking the entire time before the game that UGA better look out for Boise and then UGA smacks them in the mouth and its the same ol they ain’t that good. Yall beat a washed up Auburn team that lost 88% of there offense and now yall are all that. Oleary did beat UGA on his resume 3 years in a row but i think the lied on his resume when he applied at UCF and he put he won 4 times in a row. Anyway I can’t wait till the end of the season when the Dawgs roll into Atlanta and whip those Jackets again. I am not sure who is the tougher team the jackets or Kentucky. Either way you look at it UGA owns them both….

Hey Murf…don’t know if the stat is still true, but a few years ago, Tech had more alums as officers in publicly traded companies per capita of enrollment than any school in the country. What was that about IS support? It’s more like a winning combination of technical entrepreneurship and business leadership. Jeff…I have no beef with your comments. You seem to offend everyone equally.

I’m a DAWG fan and SEC fan. Until the ACCessory Conference got VA Tech, FSU, Miami & Boston College, they sucked at everything but basketball and local science fair competition. From 1 through 12, the SEC ranks as the best conference in the nation. The view from here is that the SEC should trade Vandy & Kentucky to the ACCessory for FSU & Miami, divide into the SEC North & SEC South. No other conference could crack the final top 10 rankings on a consistent basis if this came to fruition. The PAC-10 has USC and no one else, the Big 10 has Ohio State & Michigan, the big 12 has Texas & Oklahoma and every other conference might as well be Division 1-AA. Don’t believe me? Check the final 1-A rankings for 2005.

The Bulls were your last great thing and the NBA sux anyway.
Nobody said anything about fighting or anything like that. Read the entire blog moron and possibly the email he sent me and then you can comment.
Until you get the facts straight, you are as much a loser as Schultz.
Chicago sux…Schultz sux…Everybody just have fun and comment on football instead of getting your panties in a wad.
Ha Ha Ha…glad to see everyone is still fixated on me. I love being the center of attention. Well I’m taking my fat ugly wife out to dinner now so I will respond no more…..until the next Schultz posting…..

Figures a Bug would have a fat, ugly wife.
Yet another reason to disbelieve him when he says he’s a Georgia Grad and fan.
What do y’all call a visitor on Tech’s campus?
A visitor!

I like it when I can just sit back and read everybody attack each other. Makes my job a lot easier. OK, everybody, I’m going to come clean. Tech fans: I went to Georgia. Georgia fans: I went to Tech. Or was it Florida? Miami fans: I went to Florida State. FSU fans: I went to Miami. Or was it Florida? Lou Holtz fans: Get help. Schultz4Prez, Schultzisaloser, Schultzsucks: Do the words “Copyright infringement” mean anything to you? You’ll be hearing from my lawyers.
