Falcons’ ‘A’ game can beat Eagles

Mark Bradley

Flowery Branch The Eagles have been the NFC’s best team over the last four seasons and have twice eliminated the Falcons from the playoffs. If the Falcons are to reach the Super Bowl, they’ll have to beat Philadelphia at some point. At what point might they be ready to beat Philly?

Why, right about now.

Said Michael Vick: “We’re ready to beat anybody we play.

Said Ike Reese: “There’s no reason we can’t beat them. But they’re not a team that’s going to be intimidated by being on the road in any game against any opponent. We’re going to have to be on our ‘A’ game.â€? And if the Falcons indeed bring their best come Monday night? Will their best suffice? “Oh, yeah,â€? Reese said. “Our ‘A’ game is good enough to beat anybody in the league.â€?

Reese has more standing in this matter than anyone else on either side. An Eagle for seven seasons, he’s now a Falcon. He was brought here not so much for his skills as a linebacker — he’s technically a substitute — as for his capacity to carry himself in the manner of a consistent winner. Put simply, the Falcons want a little of Reese to rub off on everybody else in his new locker room. Thing is, Reese doesn’t believe much rubbing needs to be done.

“When you play a team in a championship game [as the Eagles did against the Falcons in January],â€? Reese said, “you’re not going to be a lot better. We knew the Falcons had things they did very well — they were the No. 1 rushing team in the league, and we were 22nd [16th, actually] against the run. But the key to that type of game is imposing your will on the other team.â€?

The Eagles made most of the impositions that cold day, winning 27-10. There were, Reese conceded, extenuating circumstances. “The weather was a factor. So was us being in our fourth NFC championship game.

Lest we forget, the Eagles needed four tries to book Super Bowl passage. Many of these Falcons also lost in Philadelphia in January 2003, which isn’t to say the Falcons are now incapable of beating this opponent. The Eagles were simply better both times, but the Falcons are getting really good themselves. That’s one of the reasons Ike Reese is here.

“This team reminds me of the way we were in Philly in 2001 when we lost to the Rams in the NFC championship,â€? he said. “They’re on the cusp of winning big and being in the Super Bowl for a long time to come. … Nobody’s settling for second-best here; nobody’s happy just to be the NFC South champ. A lot of these coaches came from San Francisco, where they won five Super Bowls, and Rich McKay won a Super Bowl with Tampa Bay. The expectations are very high, and the tempo is very similar to what I’d been used to in Philadelphia.â€?

In football, “tempoâ€? means doing what you want to do and doing it with dispatch. The best teams have a tempo; the lousy ones mill around. If you watch the neo-Falcons — and not just in games, but in practice — you’ll see no milling. They mightn’t be as far along at this winning thing as Philadelphia, but they’re making up ground. On a charged Monday night in the Georgia Dome, they’re fully capable of being the aggressors. They’re ready, in sum, to win this game.

“The great thing about us in Philly was that we’d get teams to play at our tempo, Reese said. His new team is getting close to doing the same. “We’re a young team, up and coming. We’ve got players capable of imposing our will.

The Eagles will be a great team no matter what happens Monday night. The Falcons can only achieve greatness by showing they can beat a team like Philadelphia. For the Eagles, this is just another big game. For the Falcons, it’s the chance to prove something to the watching world. They’ll prove it all night. They’ll win.

Mark, I hope you are right, but I think that the Falcons are still a year off. A year to get a NFL caliber passing game and to further strengthen the offensive line and defensive backfield. Then we will be there.

Mark, You are such a homer. LOL The Falcons are not ready to beat a elite team like the Eagles yet. Mike Vick has to throw the ball down the field and he hasn’t proved he can do that yet. But it should be a great game. Take care

What makes the Eagles an alite team? Last season is “last season”. They are a team on the verge of decline. They have a cancer in the form of # 81, who hates his own QB. They have no running game other than using Westbrook as a scat back or on short pass plays. They have a QB who used to run a lot, but has gained so much weight he can hardly even move anymore. They have a gifted defense, and this is the reason they have been in the hunt for so long. However, their defense relies so heavily on blitz packages, that even that is predictable. No “Wedding Crasher”, go back to your lil’ Eagles board, and drown in your own green vomit. This one belongs to the Falcons. There is nothing elite about the Eagles, and especially their fans.

Hey y’all check my new Falcons Blog out. The Falcons play ALOT better at home and should Win Monday Night. The eagles aren’t as great as they were on the defensive line. I think Vick will expose their D-line losses and have a real good game. Plus, with our big Receiver’s, I think we’ll throw some jump ball’s up.

You thought that was smart insight? Check the Blog out for more of that genius!

Dear Lord eric, that’s probably one of the dumbest posts I’ve ever seen on any message board. You have a quarterback (Ron Mexico) who couldn’t hit the ocean with a football, and your best receiver (Crumpler) nearly got decapitated the last time he saw Brian Dawkins (1 little old catch for 7 yards after that hit). I know people from Georgia are proud of their fine ability to abuse the English language by using such hip phrasology as “Drrty South”, and that vowel substitution is probably common place (and a ringing endorsement of Atlanta’s “fine” public school system)for backwater types such as yourself, but please note that the word is “elite”; “alite” is the fine alcohol you Southerners drink that probably accounts for your fantastic grasp of the written word.

There are several reasons the Falcons won’t win on Monday night:

Since 2000, the Eagles are 31-13 on the road, including playoffs.

Andy Reid is 15-2 in primetime games. The only losses? Coincidentally, the regular season re-match on MNF to open the 2003 season after they lost to Tampa in the 2002 NFCCG and last year’s throwaway game to the Rams, where they sat all of their starters.

Reid is also 4-0 vs. the Falcons, including 2-0 in the playoffs, one of which was played in PRIMETIME.

You guys are kidding yourself by calling the Eagles “a team in decline”. McNabb is hitting his stride right now, Owens has been a model citizen since being allowed to come back to the team, and the team returns 9 starters on both offense and defense from a year ago. Enogh talk about how the weather was a factor in January-BOTH teams had to play in it. You couldn’t beat the Eagles who were WITHOUT Owens—what are you going to do against HIM, Westbrook (16 for 96 yards against the vaunted Falcons defense); Greg Lewis 2-62 including a 45 yard strike and a 10 yard run on a reverse; rookie Ryan Moats.

Ladies,

I’ll keep it short and sweet: This game will not be close by midway through the 4th quarter. Eagles by 10 or more.

Iknow, I know, “The Falcons’ “A” game is much better than the Eagles “A” game, McNabb is overweight, blah, blah, blah.

Mark it down: McNabb will run wild a few times and Vick will be pressured into a mistake. Good luck with TO while you also try to also stop Westbrook, McNabb, LJ Smith, Greg Lewis, ya know, Super Bowl caliber players.

Hey, save the blather until after the game. I’ll be back on Tuesday morning.

RealBirdz,

Super Bowl caliber players? You mean chokers, don’t you? Or is that vomiters?

Come on, 1 outa 4 ain’t bad, right?

Or 1 outa 3, at home?

No, I think I’ll take the Falcons in this one.

As for TO being a model citizen, y’all are the ones who are delusional. You honestly think this will last when McNabb starts spreading the ball around? You honestly think he’ll keep his mouth shut all season? This is a ticking time bomb waiting to rip apart y’all’s fragile team chemistry.

You know why the Eagles will never win a Super Bowl? Because Andy Reid gave in. He made a deal with the Devil, and when you do that, you never win. That’s the catch.

Peter King tried to tell Reid and Childress what was going to happen, but they didn’t listen.

Do you think Bill Belichick would have signed Owens? No, he wouldn’t have. In fact, Belichick gets rid of All-Pros who no longer conform. Lawyer Milloy ring a bell?

This is why New England keeps on winning and y’all keep on choking.

When you make a deal with the Devil, the Devil will collect.

I love the Atlanta Birds but watch and see: Philly will contain Vick on the outside and blitz like crud up the middle; chances are good Vick will do something goofy (under pressure). O Line please have your best game ever. Be the difference in this team, this year.

You spout the same BS; you forgot to comment on how mean-spirited we are up here, how we once threw snowballs at Santa Claus, blah, blah, blah.

At least we made the Bowl last year. You will never get to the Bowl with Vick. So sit back, relax, and enjoy…….MANY Mike Vick INTs this year - starting this Monday night. I will be back here on Tuesday, and throughout the season as the Falcons’ turnovers mount.

Listen, we will see on Monday night. If you are man enough, bring all your bluster back in here on Tuesday morning to take your medicine.

I just had to respond to Big Jimmy. Dude, you truly are delusional.

TO is going to light up the Falcons secondary on Monday night. The guy is a major pain in the a*, but he can flat out play ball. He is a beast. Oh, and he has a 4-time Pro Bow QB throwing to him. McNabb in 2004: 31 TDs, 8 INTs.

So, Jimmy Boy, as I stated to the other Falcons’ fans earlier, bring yourself back to this blog on Tuesday morning. We will review DeAngelo Hall’s national, prime-time torching at that time.

Until then, have a good week and great weekend.

I’d rather read your opinion on aspects of the team versus if they will win or lose. This peice didn’t make me feel any different about MNF.

Eagles are prime for the fall, especially on Monday night. Every NFC superbowl loser has a bad year the next year and they typically do not do well on the Monday Night Opener. For the Eagles, that bad year will start Monday night. Donovan is obviosly not laying off the cheesesteaks. My guess is he’ll get winded and nausious this game (like other games according to his loyal teammates) because Coleman, Smith and Kerney will be in his face all night. If he throws up on our turf we’ll be sure to send him a dry cleaning bill. As for Owens, he’s going to get to meet a guy named Hall who’s been flying under the radar.

Realbirdz- what is a “superbowl caliber” player? I thought teams made it to the superbowl? I believe you mean “pro bowl” caliber player which really has no context here. Then again, given the silverbirdz team chemistry right now, I wouldn’t expect you to know the difference. And before you start that “we went to the superbowl last year” crap, you didn’t win it so give it a rest.

Did all you Falcon fans bump your head. The Falcons WISH they were in the same class. Eagles have better coaches ( Mora, are u kidding ),way better defense, special teams, rei ceivers, and o , by the way ,Way, Way, Way better quarterback. I just hope its a good game, not a blowout on national tv, which it may become. By the way you hard core falcon fans. J.T., I KNOW you didn’t just say that the Eagles’ special teams is better than the Falcons’! And your QB may be way, way, way better at yacking all over the field than ours, but I doubt that is going to get you many points. By the way, good luck with your “great” defense what with that gaping hole up the middle of your d-line (Corey Simon). The D-V-D combo is gonna ram it right down your throats. Westbrook just broke off contract negotiations, TO and McNabb hate each other, and you guys are coming into our house. Just be sure to have some butter or oil handy come Tuesday. You also forgot about our linebackers ( Jerimiah) and saftey,s ( Dawkins) just ask your boy Alge Crumpler, he will tell ya , LOL. And by the way, your running attack ,lol, that D-V-D will be history, just like 8 tracks. I am out like an Iverson cross -over.

Phillyphan#1. What are basing your conclusions on for best defense, special teams, coaches, etc.?

I’ll give you that McNabb is a more polished quarterback at this time, how many more seasons has he been starting than Vick? How good was he in his third year as a starter?

Coaches. All Mora did as a first year head coach is take his team to 11-5 and the NFC Championship game. How did Philly’s coach his first season?

Let’s look at receivers. Outside of TO and Westbrook (not a receiver) your best receiver had 36 catches. Philly looked like crap until the playoffs after TO was injured.

Let’s break down the special teams, which obviously you just shot your mouth off with no research. Falcons, # 1 in punt return average at 12.4 yards per punt return, Eagles # 13 with 9.2. Falcons had a slight advantage in kick return average at # 13 while the Eagles were # 16. On kick returns the Falcons were # 7 with a 19.9 yard average while the Eagles were #26 with a 23.2 average.

Defensive punt return average the Falcons were #1 with a 4.1 average, the Eagles were #6 with a 6.5 average.

The defenses were very similar statisticly.

The Eagles were #12 pass defense with 217.2 yards per game, Atlanta was 24 with 239 ypg average. Atlanta was #8 in rushing defense with 105 ypg, which is amazing considering they gave up over 300 yards vs. Kansas City, Philadelphia was #16 with 119 ypg. Atlanta was #1 in sacks with 48, the Eagles were #2 with 47.

Offensively the Falcons had the #1 rushing offense. The Eagles did have a much better passing offense.

Your blanket arguement was extremely flawed. Lay off the sauce.

Philly fans of course you guys have one helluva team, but this Falcon team is a lot better, than last year. Sure you guys have made some improvements, But this TO thing will drag you down a notch, it will be a distraction. Owens’ presence will motivate defenders play and fans to boo. This will follow your team throughout the season. If Atlanta wins will you sit up strait and chew the crow in your blob?

Yo, Atlanta boyz…..lighten up….you are a young team who had a premature season….the reason the EAGLES will win is very simple….Mike Vick isn’t ready to sit back in the pocket and let his recievers develop thier pass patterns…..instead of being “PATIENT”, he gets happy feet and likes to show the world how fast he is….unfortunatly this isnt a track meet, its the NFL,(and with a disiplined defense they wont let you out of the pocket) and until he can learn to use someone other that his TE he will only be a sideshow and not the show Eagles-31 Falcons-14

Thats somethin he and Mcnabb have in common. Every time the Falcons play the Eagles I love to hear the delusional expectations and venom spewed out on the radio and in the papers. I don’t blame you though; it’s hard to watch your team get spanked every time you play each other. I like what the Falcons have done and have respect for them as an organization, but lets be realistic here…they are not as good as the Eagles. Not today, not Monday night, and not in January. But keep hope alive…September 2006 is only one short year away. Perhaps by then Vick will mature into the quarterback that McNabb did a couple of years ago!

The Falcons aren’t even in the same class as the Eagles. Its sad when they think that the keys to winning are weather and the “big soap opera” in philly. Get over yourselves. If your team is so good, then they would win in cold weather. Vick is terrible. And last i checked Dez White and Michael Jenkins were your #1 and #2 receivers. Who are they again??? Oh yeah that’s right, Dez White and Michael Jenkins. Maybe the Falcons should worry about being a mediocre one dimensional team who got lucky last season because Carolina was sacked with injuries. The eagles take this game monday night, 35-13.

Oh yeah, I forgot. The falcons can’t use that weather excuse anymore. Didnt they beat the packers in Lambeau like 2 years ago. Last i checked, its pretty cold in green bay in December. So its clearly evident. The reason the falcons lost to the eagles is because the eagles are a better team. And still are a better team.

I remember in 99’ when OUR running back wanted more money. I seem to recall a pretty bad experience that year. Probably the same will happen to Philly. That’s not for sure. One thing, however, is certain: The Falcons are the good guys in this match-up & noone outside Philly will want to see them succeed.

I know everyone hates the Philly fan but how can you not like the team. Andy Reid has set up one of the finest franchises in the NFL. When our little malcontent wide receiver tried to take over, Reid sent his insane butt home for a week. Reid does not mess around and does not like his players to act like a horses rearend…just ask Freddie Mitchell. I don’t know though, I may be a little bias.

Most of the posts on this board from Eagle fans seem to reveal what would be considered an overconfident state of nind, by usual standards. Except in truth, this game is not a real matchup. Say what you will about it being a new season, with roster changes, et al, but the principals remain largely the same, and the Eagles have Terrell Owens, unlike the title game of a year ago. His presence is worth a ton, in terms of reception, as well as threat. He may be a real jerk, but his football skills are truly, truly remarkable.

The Eagles played with a humongous monkey on their back last January. Had they lost a 4th straight NFC title game, the glosts of sporting pasts would have paled by comparison to the laughingstock the likes of McNabb and company would have been.

having surpassed that hurdle, and able to draw off the confidence of being a dominant team to a certain point every year, coupled with the Falcons Waterloo history against the Eagles, the physical advantage, and psychological advantage add up to a serious Eagle advantage. And chances are good that the final score reflects that.

One City, One Team, One More Time.

Philly T,

R-e-a-d t-h-e t-h-r-e-a-d.

Read the thread. Read this freeking thread. Where did the insults start? Where do the insults always start with you people? I defended our fans. If one has to defend that means one was first attacked. I’ll be right here Tuesday morning even though I will be tired from all the celebrating. Let’s see if you are brave enough to show up.

Josh. Guess what. This is called a blog. People come to these to express their opinions. That’s why they have blogs. Wouldnt be much to it if there werent some armchair quarterbacks participating. If you dont like it then stay away from blogs.

Ladies of Atlanta,

It is very easy to forget - since the Eagles absolutely crushed the Falcons without him in last year’s NFC Championship Game - but TO WILL be playing on Monday night.

http://www.philly.com/mld/philly/sports/12608784.htm

So someone from ATL please explain to me how we were 17 points better than you in the last real game you played, we’re adding TO to the mix, our defense is totally healthy at this time and looks BETTER than last year, and y’all think the Falcons will beat/crush/spank the Eagles?!

Heeeelllllo! Anybody home?

See you Tuesday morning back at this blog. Be man/woman enough to show up.

Enough of the retoric Preydawg, Tuesday morning will be a time of celebration for the Philly fan. The streak of domination will continue whether they play in the freezing cold or the climate controlled Dome. Cheese steaks for everyone!

LOL. What have the falcons done to pass the Eagles all of the sudden? The QB is the most important position in all of sports. So far Vick has proven himself to be simply a below average throwing QB. Sure Vick may be the greatest athlete to ever play the position. Great! An athletic, skilled defense like the Eagles possess will win that match-up every time. The Eagles are an extremely well balanced team. Falcons witnessed that first hand last year when they got smoked by the Eagles without TO. And for those of you who think (or should I say pray) that the Eagles are on the decline, get informed. The Eagles are $12 million under the cap, Donovan McNabb is in his prime, and they have a rediculously talented young secondary. LOL. PS…Vick better not complain about the weather after Monday like he did last year. Be a man, it’s football!

When we come, we come to take over,,,,from the team on the field, to thier worthless fans in the stands, we will dominate every aspect of this matchup! If you think i’m b******, check the record books,,,and if your still feelin froggey…the 30 of us are arriving on sunday at 2pm american airlines flight 410….look that up too…..cant wait to see all of you….but I doubt very much I will……And since I just opened my history book,,HMMM, I dont know if the south actually lost the war,,,but I do know they QUIT! Philly fans should be proud of thier athletes. Afterall, who wouldn’t be proud of T.O. and Allen Iverson. The reason they’re so defensive is because they see the end is near, and will be puncuated Monday night. Their passion and knowledge for football runs deep. If we all had to stay indoors 8 months out of the year because it was 10 degrees outside, we’d be a little more rabid as well. Do the females shave in Philly? Do they have women? Just curious. They’re really good at hurling insults, “We’re ignorant, is one of their favorites. My ignorant as will be on the golf course all winter. But hey, staying inside all winter will give ya’ll plenty of time to hone your skills. Basically they’re good at being a*s. VICK SHOWS OUT. FALCONS WIN IN A CLOSE ONE!!

Goodness me, AJC. Look what happens when you remove the cover price for commenting on these columns. All the riff raff coming trawling through the door. There appear to be folk here from Philly trying to convince themselves their team has not just had one of the worst pre-seasons in the NFL. And that everything is a bowl of roses , all sweetness and light in Eaglesville. I beg to differ. Your team has all the unity of a rabble at present. Owens, McNabb, Westbrook, the coach - there are more plotlines than a soap opera. Meanwhile, in case you hadn’t noticed, the Falcons have strengthened the team that went to the NFC title game last year, against all expectations, in only the first year of new coaches and systems. We’re in the second year of that now, and you’ll find out on Monday night just how much a difference that makes. That and our fine recruiting. The defense is faster, hungrier and deadlier. McNabb will not have the time to throw he enjoyed last year. Yards on the ground will be few and far between. Meanwhile you’ll all find out that Michael Vick can actually throw the ball as well as run with it. And that you suddenly can’t seem to stop him doing either. Falcons win, and win handily. Eagles descend further into recriminations, finger-pointing and crying as they embark on the road to oblivion.

Oh, and Bob - I stopped reading your, ahem, “insights” after noticing you’d used the name Terrell Owens and the words “model citizen” in the same sentence. And you say Falcons fans are kidding themselves??

This is disgraceful.

Trash talk is one thing but this is completely unreadable. There has been only about 5 posts that had anything to say and only 1 from an Eagles fan with anything worth reading.

AJC, if you hear me, I’d be glad to pay $100 a year to be able to talk to other fans and reporters. Heck, perhaps there could be a weekly blog from a player. I’d pay for that!

This blows.

I hear you Jen. I’d be glad to pay that sort of money too. With it being free to comment now, most of these things will end up inane flame wars. Which will mean the columnists and reporters won’t bother trawling through all the responses to make meaningful further comments. I work on a newspaper, and I have to say this move from a paid service to a free service baffles me. Maybe it’s just designed to get the number of hits on the site up. But the cost of the move is a serious downgrade in the quality of discussion, which will soon alienate readers like you and me.

I really miss the interaction between those of us fans who paid subscription and the interaction between the fans and reporters.

I used to read and post on the paid blogs/columns every day. Now, I barely come by once a week to read the columns.

And this really unattractive flaming that’s going on is repulsive to my feminine sensibilites.

Nose in air

I can’t imagine many women wanting to post on blogs like these…..

OK, Eagles fans. I just want to say that this was a great game. It was so exciting to watch. Very tight and well-matched. Good luck the rest of the season.
