The Tuesday Countdown

Jeff Schultz

10: As I blog, I’m sitting in a coffee shop at the Tallahassee airport. Many tired, angry people in here wearing orange.

9: That was an important win for Florida State last night. But I’m thinking Larry Coker felt a lot better about Miami’s future watching Kyle Wright (16-28, 232 yards) than Bobby Bowden did watching Drew Weatherford (7-24, 67).

8: Dan Kolb comes in from the bullpen. Gives up a grand slam home run. Braves lose. Clearly Bobby Cox did not read Braves Bullpen For Dummies. Chapter 1: “When considering bringing Dan Kolb in from the bullpen, run head first into a wall, the re-evaluate your decision.”

7: If Dan Kolb wakes up in the morning with a horse’s head in his bed, does he still count against the 25-man roster? I mean, hypothetically, of course.

6: Braves’ magic number is 19. The bullpen has blown 19 save opportunities.

5: One former beat writer’s opinion: Jerry Rice can’t be the best player in NFL history because he wasn’t even the best player on his team (Joe Montana). But he’s in the top three (1. Jim Brown; 2. Montana; 3. Rice).

4: Barry Bonds is working out with the Giants, appears close to returning and noted that “it’s great to smell the grass again …” Geez. What a druggy.

3: Lance Armstrong and Sheryl Crow are engaged. I’m assuming they’re not going to honeymoon in France.

2: Got e-mailed a press release the other day in which Jesse Ventura touts a Canadian-based online betting service. Guess those political connections he made as a governor didn’t lead to another other job offers.

1: Old pal Peter King of Sports Illustrated picks the Falcons as a wild-card team (very plausible) but Minnesota to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl. I hate it when Peter gets off his meds.

St. Jeffrey,

Glad to see you can make it through a column without slamming Mark Richt.

Congratulations!

funny first comment…

I love the blown save/magic number stat. Well, I don’t love what it is, but it tells the story.

How about SI picking the Panthers to go to the Super Bowl over the Falcons? I mean, Vick has NEVER lost to them…NEVER. I guess SI just wants to add one the the jinx column.

Jeff, you are the best, but Cheryl Crow is a left-wing icon who will live with the cycling idol about 1 year. She is full of it and Lance is a notable conservative with ties of giving not b*** or complaining about our Government..you can go to the bank on it.

Jeff,

Nice to see someone else has their wits about them when it comes to greatest player of all time in the NFL. You would not believe the crap I take from idiots who can’t see past Barry Sanders, Emmitt Smith, Sweetness, Elway, or Montana. I have to pull out the stats, and then prove it by pulling up all-time rushing stats on NFL.com. Jim Brown has the highest yards per carry for a whole career. He retired at his peak because The Dirty Dozen went over schedule, and he decided to stay on. If he would have ran for 5 more years, which is very plausable, Emmitt would have never have surpassed him, and Jerry Rice wouldn’t own the record for most TDs ever for a single offensive player (not counting QBs). In fact, neither of those guys would have been close. The numbers bare it out.

Jim Brown is the GOAT.

Other GOATs by sport -

Baseball - Willie Mays

Soccer - Pele’

NFL - Jim Brown

NBA - Michael Jordan

NHL - Wayne Gretzky / Patrick Roy

Boxing - Muhammed Ali

Track and Field - Jesse Owens

Cycling - Lance Armstrong

And GOAT All-Around Athlete - Jim Thorpe

I know this list will be cause for consternation… but I am right. Though, I do think discussion is great, but I’m still right ;o).

Harvey,

Thanks for forcing your conservative views on a completely apolitical forum. Feeling a bit defensive these days? Maybe you need to get back on YOUR meds.

You should be ashamed that your Tuesday column was so far off base on FSU - Chris Rix indeed! And to think that some people pay to read your column!

Come on y’all…

I throw up some hot sports opinions, some stuff guaranteed to start a debate over the GOATs, and all y’all can do is argue about your ridiculous (on both sides) ideologies?

Get with it! Being a slave to a political ideology, leaves you with a closed mind, heart, and conscience, and prevents you from voting for the best man (or woman) no matter the party. Voting should always be a matter of conscience, not ideology.

So drop this s—t, and get back to what’s really important…

Dan Kolb’s main problem is He only throws one pitch. Major league hitters will “always” hit if they know what is coming. With him, it’s obvious!

Just for the record, I chose my name for this forum in response to Harvey’s diatribe. I consider myself neither overly liberal nor an elitist, but I just wanted to raise the ol’ boy’s blood pressure a little bit.

I think what Harvey fails to realize about Crow and Armstrong is that sex is way more important than politics or religion. I’m sure the only “Bush” on Lance’s mind while Sheryl is strumming his guitar is hers. And I’m sure the last thing on Sheryl’s mind while riding the Tour de Lance is whether he supports Roberts for Chief Justice.
