My Take On The Elite 8
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
So the Lions will not be in action this Friday, though they should be (but we won’t go there again). Anyways here is my take on the remaining games in AAAAA.
Camden vs Grayson: Grayson has been the surprise team, in my opinion. I think they have having somewhat of a “cinderella run” similar to the Peachtree Ridge last year. that Rams defense is stout, but I just don’t know if they can handle those boys from Camden. I think it’ll be extremely difficult to win in Camden. If the game were at a nuetral site or in Gwinnett, I think Grayson would be much better off, but becuase it is not I will pick the Wildcats by a Touchdown.
North Gwinnett vs Newnan: I know very little about Newnan, but i do know how powerful the Bulldogs are. And NG was my pick from the beginning of the playoffs to go to the Championship and i’ll stick with them. Bulldogs win it by 10 points.
Walton vs ML King: The one undefeated team left is ML King but that Walton team sure has soem firepower. That have beaten some very good teams, and have lost to North Gwinnett. I think taht Walton has been more battle tested so I they pull it off and win by a FG.
Roswell vs Lowndes: Roswell has some problems that need to be worked out. They have to get off to a good start this time, Daniel must hold onto the ball, and they must be able to execute a FG. If they do not, Lowndes will dominate. These Vikings are big and nasty. Roswell wil have to play nearly flawless to win the game. There has been so much “focus on other things” regarding Roswell, with last week’s play, and them moving the game. All those distractions may be bad. But who knows? Who am I cheering for? I don’t really care. Who do i think will win? Lowndes. By 10.
Well that’s it, everyone have a great weekend. Go Region 7 (NG)!!!

Robbed
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
There is no other way to describe it. Peachtree Ridge was robbed in OT last Friday night against Roswell. Say what you want, even if you were there or not, Alex Daniel fumbled the football before crossing the plane of the endzone. Plain and simple. Though I have yet to hear a Roswell fan admit that (including my fellow blogger Chris Orf). They must have seen the goaline move up two yards! Watching the replay from CSS it is clear and obvious that he (Daniel) fumbled on either the one or two and that he never broke the plane with the ball. The ball then bounced in the endzone where not one Roswell player came close to the ball. The Lions were all over it. But “The play” was ruled a TD and ended the Lions season, when it should have ended Roswell’s.
Now looking at the 4th quarter, the Lions should have wrapped things up earlier. They should have run the ball with 2 and a half minutes left rather than pass it. But they didn’t. They should have made an interception on the 50 yard line when the ball was in the defender’s hands, but they didn’t. They should have caught a TD pass in OT but they didn’t. My point is that the Lions did not have to be in this situation. It could have been won much earlier. But it wasn’t and we got totally ripped off.
In my humble opinion, Roswell still has not beaten the Lions once in the last two years. Though they earned a share of a championship and an oppurtunity at another title. That makes zero sense whatsoever. Well it is all said and done now, none of it matters anymore. The ruling cannot be changed. I just felt horrible for my friends who worked so hard all season to get here and go out on that. Especially, i feel for some of those seniors who will never play football again. What a horrible way to end their careers.
All in all though, it was a great season, with it’s highs and lows. I have enjoyed writing these blogs about Lion’s football for the AJC. I would like to thank them for the wonderful oppurtunity. I will continue to write throughout the year as the Ridge sends it’s other teams onto the field or court or in the pool, whatever it may be. I will be here. Thanks again for reading my football blogs. I hope you have enjoyed them. It has been a fantastic season. GO LIONS!

Chamblee stuns the playoff picture
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
The Bulldogs are rolling through the AAA playoffs.
But first, how did they get here?
Chamblee clinched a playoff berth with a victory over Riverwood 41-14. In the final game of the regular season, the Bulldogs routed North Atlanta 42-0 creating some momentum prior to playoff time.
The third-seeded Bulldogs were not thrown any bones. Their first round opponent was the number two-seeded Flowery Branch Falcons. The Falcons were previously 11-1 largely due to the fantastic play of dual-threat quarterback Jaybo Shaw.
Even Jaybo could not save the ill-fated Falcons. Chamblee triumphed 47-34 in a tightly contested game.
The Chamblee offense wrecked the Falcon’s defense by mixing a relentless ground game with a few downfield shots. The Bulldogs accumulated 532 yards of total offense. Also, the Chamblee offense assisted their defense by keeping Flowery Branch off the field with several lengthy drives.
The Bulldog’s defense deserves just as much credit as the offense. After being lit up early by the Falcon’s offensive attack, Chamblee’s defense recovered with a couple crucial stops in the second half. In addition, the Bulldogs picked off Jaybo Shaw (just his fourth interception all year) at the end of the game to really put Flowery Branch in a jam.
There was no time for celebration.
Chamblee’s second round opponent was the 11-0 Stephens County Indians. The Indians featured a high-powered offense anchored by running back Tauren Poole (committed to Tennessee). The Bulldogs would need another dazzling performance to tackle this new obstacle.
Chamblee got just that. In a wild game filled with twists and turns, Chamblee won 58-57 by scoring the two-point conversion in the first overtime.
This game will be quite memorable to say the least. After going back and forth for most of the game, Chamblee scored and converted the two-point conversion to make it 43-42 with 45 seconds left.
The Indians wasted no time. Stephens scored a touchdown with the two-point conversion in under 25 seconds to retake the lead 50-43.
The Bulldogs were too tough to give up there. Chamblee sent the game to overtime with a miracle touchdown throw to Malcolm Beyah.
In overtime, the Indians drew first blood. Stephens County easily scored seven to make the scoreboard read 57-50.
Nevertheless, those pesky Bulldogs would not let up. Chamblee quickly countered with a touchdown of their own. However, the Bulldogs decided to put the whole game on a two-point conversion. Warren Norman scored with ease on a running play strung to the right.
The teams combined for more than 1,100 yards of total offense. Statistically, the best performance went to Warren Norman who rushed for 291 yards and four touchdowns.
Chamblee would not have won without some great strategy and gutsy calls form the Bulldog’s coaching staff. They deserve just as much credit as the players for these wild wins.

Friday Night Controversy
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Ok, now I know there is a lot of contoversy on the last play, the fumble. The ref made the call for a single reason, AD crossed the plane with the ball, causing the play to be dead and the result being a touchdown. I was there in person on the 10 yard sideline and saw it cross the plane. I’ve seen the tape on it numerous times and each time from each angle shows it crossing the plane. This is all just a bunch of PTR people wanting to start a row ebcause they lost. Yes, I admit AD fumbled the ball, and it probally was a PTR player who recovered it, but the ball crossed the plane when AD had it under control. The result, every time, is a touchdown.
Touchdown: When any part of the ball, legally in possession of a player inbounds, breaks the plane of the opponent’s goal line, provided it is not a touchback.

Unfinished business
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Just take a minute to soak in what just happened. RHS hosted PTR, tied the ball game, and won it in overtime. Wow, just wow. The Hornets played their hearts out the whole game, and came away with the W.
First half was not Hornet football, we had a chance to make the game 3-3, but a bad snap and a great return made the game 10-0. Coach Mac chewed us out during halftime. We made great half time adjustments and came out on fire. Our first Touchdown came from Alex Daniels, then a field goal by Jim Broadway made the game 10-10. PTR struck back on a touchdown pass, making the game 17-10. TO tie the game the Hornet’s Garrett Embry made a great touchdown on a second effort left, making the score 17-17 with 19 seconds left in the game. Everyone was estatic, the game of the century went into overtime. The Hornet’s Defense made a great stop forcing the field goal. Alex Daniels came up big to make the game 23-20 with the Hornets win.
Next week we travel down to Lowndes County to play one of our toughest matches of the season. I hope to see you all there.
GO HORNETS!!!!

What Happened at McEachern, Stays at McEachern
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
First off, Happy Thanksgiving to all! I hope the turkey was good, but now I hope you are ready for some football. Friday night, the re-match of the century will take place at Ray Manus Stadium in Roswell. The defending State Champion Peachtree Ridge Lions (8-3) will take on the defending State Champion Roswell Hornets (9-2). You may remember that last year these two teams fought to a 14-14 in the State Championship Game in front of thousands of people at McEachern’s Cantrell Stadium. This game on Friday is known to some as, “Unfinished Business.” In my opinion, it isn’t. Last year, both teams were champions. As lame as that may sound, both teams fought hard and played like Champions. It’s not like one team did not deserve the title, they both did. But that does not matter, what’s past is past, it is gametime; Playoffs in Georgia! (And this year, there are no ties.)
Roswell, so far this year: They opened the season in the dome, and defeated Brookwood by a score of 10-7. Other than that, most every other Hornet win has not been close. Most of those by 20+ points. But the Hornets did slip up twice this season, to Walton and to Chatahoochee. Both of the scores in those games were 14-10. Roswell has averaged 31.5 points a game on offense so far this year. On defense, they have averaged giving up 8.6 points a game. Their record against playoff teams is 2-2, including last week’s beating of South Gwinnett.
The Skinny on the Hornets Game: The Hornets still have their two big stars from last year, in QB Dustin Taliaferro (pronounced Tolliver) and RB Alex Daniel. Taliaferro has thrown for a little over 1500 yards and has only 5 interceptions on the year. He has also connected for 12 TD’s this season. The Roswell offense is mainly powered by Daniel who has over 1400 yards with 15 TD’s. Also, be on the look out for WR Garrett Embry who has just over 600 yards receiving this year, far more than any other Hornet WR. Now, I said powered, but really the Hornet offense is balanced, it is just really good all around. On defense, the Hornets are led by #2 Ebele Okapu (UNC Commit). He plays the LB position and he is very hard hitting and very fast. But it is said that a weakness of his may be pass coverage.
What the Lions have to do: First off, on defense, they must neutralize the running game and Alex Daniel. The must force Taliaferro to throw the ball. With added pressure from the Lions D-Line, they can force an interception into the hands of the vicious Peachtree Ridge Secondary. I think, the Lions will do much better if the Hornets are having to throw to move the ball. But getting them to do that will be the hard part. Stopping the run is not the strong point of the Ridge Defense. If the Lions can slow down the Hornet offense then I think they will be okay. The Ridge offense has been rolling as of late. This game could end with some very high point totals.
My Predictions: So last week, I was 15-1, and I slipped up on the East Coweta-Stephenson game.
Harrison @ Walton
Valdosta @ ML King
North Gwinnett @ Brookwood
Coffee @ Newnan
Grayson @ Norcross
East Coweta @ Camden
Douglass @ Lowndes
Peachtree Ridge @ Roswell
And yes I picked 5 road teams to move on…
My Final Thoughts:
After Friday’s rematch nobody will really look back at Peachtree Ridge and Roswell and say they tied. This will yes, somewhat settle things from last year, at least from a fan’s point of view. But i can tell you one thing, come 7:30 PM the game will be tied (0-0), but it will not be a continuance from last year. For there will not be one player on that field will be remembering last December’s Championship. It is a new year, and these are new teams, and this is a new game. At about 10 PM, one team will walk off that field knowing they will continue to defend their title as State Champion and one team will leave knowing that they can’t defend that title. It is the rematch of the ages and boy it’ll be a good one. GO LIONS!!! And go region 7!

Dream Crushers
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Every football players dream is to be part of a perfect team. Last Thursday night, the North Cobb Warriors went to sleep dreaming about continuing their winning ways in their already perfect 10-0 season. But they forgot one little thing. They were not playing some scrub #4 seed. They were playing the defending State Champions, a team I believe is worthy of a #2 seed.
North Cobb got off to a quick start and scored on the first drive. Matt Roark was running all over the field for the Warriors. North Cobb looked as if they would take things into the half with a 14-7 lead. But Mitchell Williford and Asher Clark had other plans. With just 7.2 seconds left, Clark fired a 29 yard pass to Williford who made a spectacular catch in the endzone. Greg Johnson’s XP was good and the Lions had tied the game at the end of the half. What a momentum swing.
Early in the second half, Brandon Davis broke off a 70 yard run which set up and eventual 1 yard TD run by Ronnie Smith. Davis finished with 145 yards on the ground. Kavoskee Simpson stepped up big and got his frist interception of the night on the next drive. Asher Clark then hit Derrick Bryant on a 42-yard pass for another Lions TD. It made the score 28-14. The Lions soon got the ball back and they were ready to attempt a 32-yard FG. But Coach Ballard decided to pull a little trickery, and holder Bo Mack dropped by to pass and threw a 15 yard TD pass to Nick Gubitoso. The Lions then led 35-14. It looked as if Peachtree Ridge was going to run away from North Cobb, on their own field! North Cobb had a furious comeback, bringing the score to 35-28. The Warriors drove down the Lions 5 yard line with less than a minute to play. Kavoskee Simpson read Matt Roark’s eyes and stepped in front of the WR and intercepted the pass which sealed the fate of North Cobb’s ALMOST perfect season.
The Lions upset of the Warriors sets up a second round matchup for the ages. Peachtree Ridge will play Roswell this Friday night, which is a rematch of the 2006 AAAAA State Championship that ended in a 14-14 tie. Be looking out for my preview of that game within the next few days. The anticipation is so great and i am looking forward to a great game.
This blog was written based on personal accounts of others and of the Atlanta Journal Constitution. I was not in attendance, but I was there in spirit and I celebrated at my hotel in Jesup, GA. Everyone have a great Turkey Day and be safe! GO LIONS!

Week 1
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Hey guys, sorry for this blog’s delay, and Coach Brown, who has the stats for me, will be at practice tomorrow so I can get game 9, 10, and 11s stats for you guys tomorrow.
Well, round one of the playoffs was a complete flip from our gamer against Centennial. Roswell went into the first half against South Gwinett pumped and fought hard, but with two muffed returns by Lavelle Larry, it gave South Gwinett a reason to fight, making the score at the end of the first half 14-10 Roswell. RHS came out the second half pumped, on fire, and ready to roll over the opposition unmatched. I think that the last touchdown run by Steven Peasant capped off the game nicely. He ran over South Gwinett stiff arming three defenders and made it into the endzone.
Next week, RHS plays the grudge match of the century. We play P’Tree RIdge at Ray Manus Stadium. We’ll need all the fans there to support us on friday night, and the game will be a great one.
GO HORNETS!!!!

Just Enough To Get By
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Such an intense game on Friday, I was just glad we had won. Although we were up against a #4 seed team, we were ready for anything, however it did not show on the field. The Etowah Eagles came to our turf, hoping to advance in the playoffs; the Eagles had indeed put up a good fight, but no cigar for them.
A good crowd showed up on both sides of the stadium, and both were ready for an exciting game. The game started really slow, with the score being 0-0 for a quite awhile. The fans of Norcross had continued to pump up the spirit as the football team feeds off it and only furthered the anticipation for a win. Norcross was the one to press “GO” as the game picked up with the first touchdown close to the end of the first quarter. Second quarter quickly approached with Etowah returning from some downtime with a touchdown of their own, which began to rise the tension in the game. Before the half-time mark, the score was tied, and anyone’s game.
The marching bands both took half-time to play their tunes, filled with exhilaration and wonders of who would be advancing to the next round of the playoffs.
The third quarter started, and Etowah came back strong with their own 6-pointer leaving the score in their favor 7-13. For Norcross, it felt like that score was there forever. For most of the third quarter, it was the Blue Devils who were trying to catch up to the Eagles; Etowah’s quick-hitting dive plays gashed Norcross’ vaunted defense for most of the night. Minutes before the fourth, the offense finally hit the gear into overdrive to overcome Etowah.
“We said this is not going to be the last game we play together, and we meant it,” said Brice Butler, who had a season-high 10 receptions, including his county-leading 12th touchdown.
As the final quarter began, it was still really anyone’s game. The score of 14-13 eventually shifted to 21-19, where if one more touchdown by either team, it would determine the game’s outcome. For me, roughly the last 40 seconds of the game were very intense, as the clock would stop/keep going (and repeat), and both teams were in a position to make a touchdown with the right plays. Luckily for us, time was on our side and had finished the game at 21-19, with the Devils and the Eagles not being able to accomplish much in the last seconds of the game. So it was a great game to watch, but on the field, a lot more could of been done.
“It’s about winning the games,” Norcross coach Keith Maloof said. “It’s back to the drawing board. We know we’re capable of playing better, and we’ve got to execute better than we did tonight. But we did the things we needed to do and moved it when we needed to.”
As the Blue Devils left the field with peace of mind, they had knowledge of what to do next time to be able to advance the second round against the Grayson Rams.
Fact Sheet:
NORCROSS 24, ETOWAH 19
Norcross 7 0 7 7 = 21
Etowah 0 7 6 6 = 19

We Like #4
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
I think it is safe to say that the Lion’s were pretty happy with their #4 seed last year. Many people are critical, and complain that the Lions had an easy road to the Championship. Okay sure, maybe Wheeler was definetely not #1 seed caliber but the following teams were all phenominal: Campbell, Stephenson, Warner Robins, and Roswell. All fine teams. This year, the road will be just as hard for the Lions and it starts Friday night against the #1 ranked North Cobb Warriors. The Warriors (10-0) are not only a #1 seed but they are #1 in the state. It will be a mighty tough challenge for the fourth seeded Lions (7-3). The winner of the game will definetely have THE hardest road to the Championship with following round games potentially being against Roswell, Lowndes, possibly Norcross or Stephenson then the finals.
North Cobb comes into the game as the defineite favorite and one of the favorites to win the State Title. My only question is can they live up to the hype? They play in Region 5 which in my opinion may be the 2nd weakest metro Atlanta region. The did give the Harrison Hoyas their only loss of the season. But North Cobb won that game by one point. They also led Etowah by 28 i believe and then the Eagles came back and nearly shocked the Warriors and the state. They won that game by seven. Now, i will give them this, they beat Marietta 49-0. So against playoff teams, North Cobb is 3-0. North Cobb is 10-0 and due for a loss.
Peachtree Ridge is the underdog in this one, but as I said before, we don’t mind that at all. I have talked to several football players this week, and just by the tone of their voices, they will be ready Friday night. The excitement and intensity is there. Now, we know how Peachtree Ridge has done this year. 1-3 against playoff teams…. not too good. But i still believe we are better than Grayson and Mill Creek, even though they beat us i still think we are better. So our record against playoff teams should be 3-1. The high point in the Lions season came against win over the then #1 ranked Norcross Blue Devils.
The report on North Cobb: The have a stout defense, and an explosive offense. The defense has given up on average 10.2 points a game. The offense however, averages 36.1 per game which ranks 2nd in the state. They run a spread offense that is filled with balance and speed. Highlighted by QB Matt Roark and Rb Calvin Middleton, the offense of North Cobb is very hard to contain. They love to spread the defense out wide, and then run up the middle with Roark and Middleton. But also, the DB’s of Peachtree Ridge cannot led their guard down otherwise they may watch WRs Rico Mack and Michael Emerson stroll into the endzone.
What Peachtree Ridge Must Do: The Lions cannot come into this game saying we must stop the run or we must stop the passing. They must stop it all. North Cobb is so balanced, that they can kill you both ways. The Warriors also have a strong O-Line which will be a great matchup with Lions D-Line. Peachtree Ridge first must pressure Roark and stop Middleton. I think we stand a better chance with North Cobb passing it more often. The Ridge secondary is full of D-1 talent and especially if the line gets pressure on Roark and he is forced to throw bad passes then the DB’s may have a huge night. That is the key to the game. Slowing down the North Cobb offense. That’s much easier said than done. The Lions should be okay offensively, considering they have combined to score 100+ in their last two games ( now granted, that was Duluth and North Fosryth). I expect a big night from Lions RB Brandon Davis; he thrives under these types of situations. I saw film a week or so ago, of Davis leaving five Wheeler players on the seat of their pants in one run last year in the playoffs. On of the most amazing high school runs that i have seen in person. The play resulted in 40 yards. The Lions have to play possibly the best game of the season to move on into the playoffs.
Sidenotes: Peachtree Ridge was ranked #4 last year as well (like i said earlier). They went on to the State Championship.
Last year’s first round game was also in Cobb County. The Lions won.
This years game is exactly 355 days from last years first round game.
The Lions have already beaten the #1 Ranked team in the State this year, that was Norcross.
My Picks For Round One (winner in bold):
Walton-Parkview
Harrison-Mill Creek
MLK-Paulding
Valdosta-Bradwell
Brookwood-Sprayberry
North Gwinnett-Marietta
Newnan-Redan
Jenkins-Coffee
Lowndes-Windsor Forest
Douglass-Mundy’s Mill
Roswell-South Gwinnett
Camden-Tift
E Coweta-Stephenson
Norcross-Etowah
Grayson-Hooch
And Finally… North Cobb-Peachtree Ridge
I will not be in attendance. I would have definetely traveled to see my team play North Cobb but I will be in Jesup, Georgia for the State One Act Play Competition which takes place on Saturday. I am excited yet disappointed i cant be at the game. But believe me i will be getting constant text messages to keep me up-to-date.
Well everyone have a great weekend! GO LIONS! Go region 7!

Lions Fight Valiantly in Defeat to the Wolves
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
This past Friday night the 10th ranked Lions lined up against the 1st ranked Wolves. The Lions stayed within seven points for almost two full quarters, competing closely with Buford. But, a late turnover in the second quarter swung the momentum towards the Wolves. In the end, Buford won 21-0.
While the Lions offense couldn’t get off the ground (understandably since Buford has seven Division I prospects on their defense), the Lions defense hit the Wolves hard. On one play, Campbell Wilson, outweighed by over 70 pounds, knocked T.J. Pridemore, a Georgia Tech signee, to the ground. Lovett lineman Fraser Perrett agreed stating that “we matched them well physically and were able to keep the score low like it was.” Though he was injured on the play, it proved to demonstrate the resiliency and scrappiness of the Lions team.
This Friday the Lions will face off against Green County at home. It will mark the first home playoff game for Lovett since 2002. Coming off an impressive performance in the loss to Buford, the Lions will try to carry that momentum into the playoffs and make a run to the Dome like last year.

Homecoming lose humbles record to 7-1
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
It is amazing how one loss can turn all of a team’s success upside down.
The much-anticipated homecoming game against Westminister turned out sour for Chamblee. The Bulldogs lost 18-10 in a highly contested game. With division supremacy on the line, Chamblee fell short when Garrett Williams was picked off on the Bulldog’s last attempt to tie the game.
For the first time this season, Chamblee looked truly outplayed. Westminister negated Chamblee’s run game and used great balance on offense to move the ball consistently.
“We had some flaws on both sides of the ball,” said fullback and punter Malcom Giles.
Chamblee’s pass defense improved allowing Westminister to accumulate only 145 passing yards. While the pass defense made strides toward progression, the run defense gave up a season high 122 yards.
“Practicing hard and working together to make sure they are ready for the upcoming game,” said linebacker and running back Terrance Leffall when asked the ways the defensive backs can improve. “We also have been running more pass drills in practice.”
One notable point that arose from the Westminister showdown was Chamblee’s ability to perform game saving drives with less than optimal time left. Against Westminister, the Bulldogs chose to stick to their game plan calling mostly running plays. This strategy would have given Chamblee at least a chance for the tying touchdown and two-point conversion if not for an untimely interception. To win against other top quality teams, Chamblee will need to find a way to pull through in the close ones.
“We just needed to make plays,” said secondary coach Josh McClure. “The opportunities were there, we just did not make the plays.”
I think this is much more a Westminister win than a Chamblee lose. Westminister dominated both the ofensive and defensive lines. They did not commit one penalty. Westminister also outgained Chamblee by 55 total yards.
I also have to mention injuries and possible missed penalties that might have impeded Chamblee’s winning chances. Obviously, the abscence of superstar Omoregie Uzzi wounded the Bulldogs on both of their lines. However, injuries are never an acceptable excuse for losing. Missed penalties on the final drive might have cost Chamblee a shot at the endzone. A clear illegal substitution penalty was missed as well as a controversial no call on Chamblee’s last offensive play.Despite these hindering factors, the Bulldogs had plenty of oppurtunities to make plays.

Eagles soar into the playoffs
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
For the second year in a row, the Eagles have proven themselves to be playoff worthy. They went 7-3 this year beating McEachern to advance to the first round of the state playoffs in region 5-AAAAA. It was a cold night as Etowah welcomed the McEachern Indians to the Eagles’ Nest for the last game of the season. It was all or nothing for the Eagles, as this game would determine whether their dreams of another playoff season would come true. Within the first four minutes, Etowah dominated with a strong first down close to the Indians five yard line. On the next play, Michael Turner (6) scored to put Etowah on the board early 6-0. There was no extra point due to the ball hitting the pole. With a minute left in the first quarter, McEachern fired back scoring their first touchdown putting them ahead 7-6. Two minutes into the second quarter, the Eagles were back on top as Chris Dumesnil (24) caught a thirty-one yard pass made by the aspiring quarterback Taylor Majors (10) for a touchdown. With the extra point by Omar Lopez (18), Etowah was ahead 13-7. Then with five minutes left in the first half, Turner scored his second touchdown of the game. This would result in the final score of the first half, 20-7. The second half was a slow one. The only points added to the score was by McEachern when they ran for about ten yards to score their second and last touchdown. It was an offensive struggle for both teams, but due to a great first half Etowah won and is heading to the playoffs to face Norcross.

Deja Vu = Norcross are Region Champs!
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Ah yes, we all know it. Norcross is once again the champions of 7-AAAAA football! We defeated North Gwinnett by 10 points. It was at the same time, a surprise and a… not-surprise. It was a surprise because the Bulldogs were undefeated 9-0 before coming to the Blue Devil stadium. But then again, this has happened before except that both of us were undefeated yet we came out victorious! So, we just repeated the past. I had heard that North Gwinnett was seriously ready for this game, but we were better! And the sweet thing is, we are the first high school to gain the Region title back-to-back for football in history!
The anticipation for this game was too high to even describe! And, what a show it was, as fans from both schools packed the stadium to cheer on the team for the championship! As the game finally began, fans were already screaming their lungs a lot. We were returned a thank you as the Blue Devils made a touchdown in the first few minutes of the first quarter. The exhilaration did not stop there, as we continued to blast through with a second touchdown still in the first quarter and not letting the Bulldogs accomplish anything; the Bulldogs had finally made a touchdown near the end of the second quarter. Not much action took place as the teams were equally strong in the second quarter, however we squeezed in another touchdown! Then, the half-time show…
In honor of Veteran’s Day (Sunday, Nov. 11) and to simply recognize the United States Military, Coast Guard, Marines, Air Force, and Army for all their hard work, the bands of Norcross & N. Gwinnett took the stage together to play ‘Armed Forces Salute” and “America the Beautiful” as a large U.S. flag was revealed on the field. Something beautiful indeed, and something new for a change in the half-time show program.
As soon as the clock hit zero, the teams were well prepared to continue fighting in the second half. The Bulldogs took us by surprise as they claimed the third quarter to themselves with their own touchdown. As the fans roared at their quick victory, we both knew that time was of the essence. We had to still say strong until the gamed ended, making sure that the Bulldogs would not get ahead - and they never did.
“To get back-to-back region championships is just awesome,” head coach Keith Maloof said. “I’m just proud of these kids and my coaches, and the way [my team] came out and played. We’ll be tough to beat if we keep playing like that.”
This victory against an undefeated team just shows that we are ready for the playoffs, and what a statement it was to beat one of the best, twice in a row!
“We just wanted this one,” D.J. Adams said, “so we had to get it.”

It starts today
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Our Playoff run that is. Coach mac got his wish. “I want to come to work tomorrow,” is what he told us. And lo and behold we’re here. The first half was some of the best football I’ve ever seen the Roswell Hornets play, the second half, not so much.
The Hornets started the game off with the kickoff team on the field. On 3rd down, Andrew Armour picked up a fumble on the 18ish yard line. Two plays later, AD was in the end zone. Next Centennial drive, the Knights handed Zach Waddel the ball on about the 27. That drive took us 4 plays instead of two but we made it in. On the Knights third drive, they made it to our one foot line, where they promptly fumbled the ball on a QB sneak, with Curtis Hazleton picking it up. That drive ended with a Dustin Taliaferro QB sneak into the endzone. The fourth Knights drive, the ball was picked off, cant remember who did it. Soon after Ian Klipp was in the endzone with the ball. And after a last ditch fieldgoal attempt the score went into the half 28-3.
The second half was amazingly sloppy, our pass defense fell apart and our offense couldn’t produce, making the game a nerve wrecking close one. But Hornets walked away with the W and the 2nd seed in our bracket. Seems familiar to last years run huh?
Today the Hornets go back to work, and we’ll see if we can’t produce better than we did second half. We’ll see if we can keep it like the first half was.
GO HORNETS!!!!

Cross Country Finishes in 1st and 2nd
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
The Lovett cross country team continued its dominance this past Saturday at the State Meet at Carrolton. The boy’s team had finished in the top three for the past four years, and the girl’s team had won state the past two years. In short, both teams had a lot of hype to live up to, and they didn’t disappoint.
The boy’s team finished in second, led by Harrison Dykes (2nd) and Bill Bazzel (5th). The rest of the team performed well also: Clarke Maddox (14th), Kyle James (20th), and Will Deisley (27th). Another thing of note is that this is the fourth time that Bill Bazzel has finished in the top ten in state finishing in 8th his freshman year, 2nd his sophomore year, and 1st his junior year. Congratulations to Bill on a great cross country career.
The girl’s team won state, led by Elizabeth Rucker (7th) and Alexandra Horst (11th). The other runners also placed extremely well to enable the runaway victory: Sarah Brook Williams (12th), Kathleen Block (14th), Ellie Boydston (22nd), Blair Beskin (26th), and Wills Davis (31st). Also, I need recognize the lone senior, Kathleen Block, for her great performance. For both cross country teams, great job and congratulations!

North Cobb Crushes Hopes of Friday’s 100th
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
North Cobb showed up for a game. Their stiffest competition this week was their scout team. The Warriors scored touchdowns on 7 consecutive possessions before punting late in the fourth quarter. It wasn’t ever a close football game, its tough to talk about.
A couple scores to note:
Campbell 29, Harrison 27
Norcross 24, North Gwinnett 14
Next Week:
Marietta at North Gwinnett

Volleyball Finishes in Second Again
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Last Saturday, the Lovett Varsity Volleyball team faced up against their perennial rivals, the Wesleyan Wolves. After taking the first game 25-16 and jumping off to a 13-9 lead in the second, the Lions were overrun by the Wolves front line. Wesleyan went on to take the remaining games and win 3-1. But, the Lions should be commended for a great season, finishing 32-7 and winning the Area Championship.
I find it fitting at the end of the season to recognize the leaders of this great team, the five senior captains. Charlayna Braxton, Mary Allen Langford, Mary Grace Gallagher, Jenny Wilkes, and Leslie Miller helped propel this team to its successful year. Once again, congratulations on a great season!

Fellowship Christian Remains Unbeaten
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Our Lady of Mercy fell behind 22-0 after another slow start. Mercy played sloppy, tackled poorly, and had enough penalties to last for a season. D. McDermott scored on a short run to cut the Fellowship Christian lead to 22-6. The score was 29-6 at the half. The second half was very much like the first with Fellowship Christian taking a 43-6 lead. Our Lady of Mercy scored two more times, as Fellowship Christian played all of its bench players. Mercy fell 4-5 and with one game left remaining against Landmark. Let’s hope Mercy can regain the fire to finish at 500 for the season.

A Home Win on the Horizon
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Yes it is true. All the rumors you have heard about me. I have been in hiding from all of the Peachtree Ridge losses. But now i am here to man up and admit defeat. Both games (North and Mill Creek) we were outplayed. In my opinion, I still think the Lions are a far better team than Mill Creek but on that night the Hawks were better. But the Lions did finally win another game last week, against North Forsyth. Though NF put up the 2nd most points anyone has scored on the Lions all year.
This week the Lions (6-3) faceoff with the cross-town rival Duluth Wildcats (1-8). The teams have played each other three times in the short history of Peachtree Ridge and the Lions have won all of the games. In fact, the Lions have basically dominated the series. The first match-up featured the Lions first ever Region 7 win. 17-7. The next year, the Lions put a beating on the Cats 62-14. And last year, the Lions rolled to a 31-0 victory. That would put the series’ all-time points total at 110-21, Lions lead.
This year, may not be any different. The Cats just lack talent. Their sole win came off of a win over Meadowcreek. In fact, the Mustangs almost ended their 4-year losing streak but the Wildcats pulled it out. The only thing that makes Peachtree Ridge-Duluth a rivalry is the distance factor. Duluth is literally less than 2 miles from Peachtree Ridge. Within running distance. Speaking of running distance…. look for Lions RB Brandon Davis to have a big night against the Cats on Senior Night. Well, i am looking forward to my last home high school football game as a student. There is no need to give you my prediction, because well…. it is pretty simple. If Duluth stays within 30, they can mark it as a Win.
Meanwhile, just up the road from our lovely school, North Gwinnett will square off with Norcross for the Region 7 Championship Game. The game has a huge effect on the Region seeding. If Norcross wins, they get #1. North gets #2. Mill Creek #3 and we get #4. North wins, then we have a three way tie for second. Rumor has it that the seeds in case of a tie have already been determined. From what i hear, the Lions get #3 and Norcross #2. That leaves Mill Creek at #4. My pick on the NG game is that the Bulldogs win by 7. Folks, I look forward to a great weekend of football (not to mention my UGA Bulldogs “blacking out” the Auburn Tigers).
GO LIONS!

Blessed Trinity, Cursed Defeat
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
As many of you already know, we lost this weekend against Blessed Trinity. The final score was 24-10. We had a great first half, but for when Blessed Trinity caught that interception, I think everything went downhill from there. We played great though, and we can not let that Warrior spirit die! We also played Dunwoody a week ago, and again lost 28-6. But hey, there is always next game! Speaking of the next game, we will play Chamblee at North Dekalb, game starts at 7:30pm. Be there, to cheer own your NAHS Warriors!

Playoff spot clinched, momentum intact
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Simply put, the Harrison Hoya football team is on a roll and refuses to be stopped. This past Friday as the Hoyas came off their bye week, they found themselves pitted against the McEachern Indians. Contrary to any concerns that were held prior to the game about how the bye week might affect the play of our Hoyas, it quickly became apparent that the off week had little or no effect on the team as they obliterated yet another team. Going into the game on Friday, the situation was as follows: based on the way the region had shaped up before Friday’s games, the Hoyas were pretty much guaranteed a playoff spot while the Indians needed a win to avoid being eliminated from playoff contention.
Friday night marked Senior Night for our Hoyas who were lead on to the field by an impassioned group of seniors who have lead this team to the point where they are right now. The leadership, drive, and focus of the seniors has been a huge factor in the success of the Hoyas’ this year. The team we are watching has not lost sight of their goal this entire season, and with each passing game that becomes more and more evident. Unlike the team’s previous two games, the Hoyas came out hot against the Indians, scoring their first touchdown in only 56 seconds on a 5-yard run by Robbie Godhigh and adding another score on a pass from Christian Burnett to Darvin Adams shortly thereafter to make score 13-0 after the first quarter. In the second quarter, Kyle Madden recovered a fumble by the Indians and returned it 31 yards for a touchdown. Later in the second, a McEachern defender recovered a fumble of his own and ran it into the enzone for McEachern’s only touchdown. The lead was extended to 27-6 before the half on an 11-yard pass for the touchdown from Burnett Godhigh. Finally, the Hoyas capped off the game with another touchdown run by Godhigh and a 17-yard run by Christian Turnipseed. The win maked another victory over a rival team which beat the Hoyas last year. Yet again, the Hoyas received a great performance from their defense which didn’t give up a touchdown to McEachern’s offense. At the same time, the offense operated at their usual efficiency while scoring 30+ points for the seventh time this year, but gave up some uncharacteristic turnovers. The offensive unit for the Hoyas proved how good they are by winning after a four turnover game; still, I am confident the Hoyas won’t make a habit of turning the ball over.
The win over McEachern officially clinched the team a spot in the playoffs and the second seed in region 5-AAAAA. The Hoyas find themselves back in the playoffs after their absence from the event last year. Because of Marietta’s loss to Woodstock, the Hoyas can no longer win the region, but that’s nothing to fret about because the second seed still puts our team in a great position going into the plaoffs. This Friday the Hoyas will travel to Campbell to take on the Spartans in their final game of the regular season. While the Hoyas have already clinched a spot in the playoffs, don’t expect them to come out flat. The team will most certainly be looking to maintain the momentum they have established up to this point, as and I have mentioned before, momentum is HUGE going into the playoffs. We will take it one game at a time, but the way the Hoyas are playing, I am anxious to see just how far they can go.

Only One Game Left, Record at 8-1
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
As with my last post, I’d like to apologize for my absence. Again I have been thoroughly involved with the theater at my school lately. I have been involved in the last three productions and the rehearsals and shows have taken up all of my time.
Enough about theater, let’s talk football. Four Fridays ago West played Norcross High School for the Homecoming game. Lance Baker, West’s phenomenal quarterback, was out this game and Reese Patton was the quarterback. First quarter was slow until the very end when Ben Emert scored the first touchdown of the night with two minutes left. Halfway through second quarter Norcross got a touchback and then four minutes later they got a touchdown and an extra point. Third quarter began with West getting three first downs in a row and finally with two minutes left, Ben Emert got another touchdown followed by an extra point kick by David Camp. Fourth quarter began with Norcross getting their second touchdown with an extra point, bringing the score up to 13-16 with Norcross in the lead. With four minutes left Ben Emert got his third touchdown which was followed by an incredible pass from Reese Patton to Ethan Shirley who scored two extra points, bringing the final score up to 21-16. West held Norcross off for a good three minutes of game time from the ten yard line until finally the clock ran out, leaving West victorious.
The following game was against Peachtree Ridge. I was late so I missed the first quarter, but when I got there the score was 0-6. Second quarter consisted of two incredible passes made by Lance Baker to Andy Cameron, and on the second pass, Cameron made a touchdown with three minutes left in the second quarter. David Camp scored an extra point and brought the score to 7-6. Halfway through the third quarter Ben Emert scored another touchdown, and then with one minute left David Camp scored a field goal. Fourth Quarter was slow until the very end when Peachtree Ridge recovered a fumble and ran close to 90 yards to score a touchdown at literally 0:00 on the clock. Despite that, West still won with the score being 16-12.
The final home game of the season was against South Forsyth High School, my former high school. Needless to say, I wanted West to win. Only twenty seconds into the first quarter Jason Klanac scored a touchdown and David Camp kicked an extra point. The rest of the first quarter was mostly slow until Ben Emert scored a touchdown with two minutes left, followed by another extra point from David Camp. South broke away thirty seconds later and scored a touchdown or so we thought. Apparently there was a flag on the play and their touchdown was revoked. Halfway through the second quarter South scored an actual touchdown followed by an extra point. A few minutes later Vince Holbrook intercepted the ball and turned to the crowd and saluted. Thanks to his interception, Ben Emert was able to score another touchdown and David Camp kicked in another extra point. The score by now was a pathetic 21-7, with West killing South. Third quarter didn’t really consist of much other than a touchdown by South with no extra points. Six seconds into the fourth quarter Ben Emert score another touchdown and David Camp kicked in another extra point. A few minutes later Ben Emert scored another touchdown and David Camp kicked in another extra point. The final score was 35-13 and finally the slaughter was over with West once again, on top.
Only one game is left in this football season, an away game rematch against East Jackson. Many of you will recall that West Forsyth won that game 14-6. Needless to say, as this season has progressed the players on the West Forsyth High School football team have grown and advanced in skill. Even on new turf, I think I can speak for everyone when I say, West is going to win.
Go Wolverines!

The Rise and Fall (and rise again) of Norcross
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
What a game last night! You know, with all the games we’ve made, most of them were beatdowns on the opposing team. Sure, that’s amazing and all, but it’s always nice to see a good game. By a good game, I mean a close game, when where you are always on your feet screaming for the team and going for a win. Norcross-Collins Hill games have been interesting* in that way in the past, and this year, was no different.
The game took place at Collins Hill’s stadium in the cold weather. The stands were pretty full on both sides, each side hoping for a win. The Blue Devil side was already pumped for this game, and we sure gave the Screamin’ Eagles a slap in the face with our first touchdown in just the first few minutes of the match. It was an exciting first half as we the game status shifting from one side to the other, along with some odd calls by the referees.
Then at the half time, the Norcross band took the field to play a great show, then let the Collins Hill band shine. This further pumped up the crowd to see what the second half had in store for us.
Minutes before the third quarter ended, the game became in favor of the Eagles, with us behind by a few points.
“We knew we’d be in for a battle,” said Norcross coach Keith Maloof, whose Blue Devils have won the last three meetings after Collins Hill had dominated the series. “We overcame adversity and I’m just extremely proud of how we played. The defense stepped up in the second half. We got the win and we played well at times. Brice made a great catch, Devonta (Bolton) had the interception, Tyler had the punt return. You’ve got to have players that make plays and those guys did.”
With the stakes high, things were getting intense. For a while, we were losing, but then we came back after a bit. We really dominated the last quarter after that fall, and it’s what made that game lister under the category of ‘a close one’. It was epic, but it just shows that we can put anyone in their place. After the game that consisted of the good, the bad, and the refs, we closed out the night silencing the Screamin’ Eagles at a stunning 31-21!
Fact Sheet:
NORCROSS 31, COLLINS HILL 21
Norcross 7 3 7 14 = 31
Collins Hill 0 7 7 7 = 21
GO NORCROSS BLUE DEVILS, 8-1!!
*Two years ago, we faced them in the pouring rain, however not gaining a win after some bad calls from the referees. A year ago, we beat them in a super-close overtime of 39-37. An exciting past indeed!

It’s in our hands now
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Hey guys, this is Chris Orf, straight from the Roswell win over Northview. The game was a Hornets victory 37-14. Key players tonight were Alex Daniels, who ran for 2 or 3 touchdowns, I can’t remember off the top of my head, Tailer Jones who made 2 key catches in the first half, and Dominique Wheeler, who shut down the receivers all game long.
The first half of the game, the Hornets walked off the field with a lead 13-7, wayyyyyyyyy too close for comfort. We came back onto the field, and just ran the ball down their throats all half long. The hornets broke away after a 20ish yarder by A.D for a TD making the score 23-14. The Hornets end their regular season against a red hot Centennial team next week, and will prove to be a good show for all. Oh ya, and if we win by a margin greater than 5, we won the sub region.
GO HORNETS!!!!

Devils Fall Flat
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Losses happen… tonight the devils found that out. The loss was crushing, but the devils werent just beaten. I don’t like to tear a team down but it was obvious that Marietta was outplayed, outhustled, outcoached, and by far outclassed. Despite some one-sided and some missed calls by the referees, there is never an excuse for seven personal foul penalties. It is my understanding that prior to the game Chris Tanzy was trying to pump the team up, trying to get them to realize that this game was huge and that he felt we were looking past them. Unfortunately, we made him a prophet. Friday’s 100th win is on hold, and it’s going to be a fight to get it next week against the No. 1 ranked team in class 5AAAAA, the North Cobb Warriors. The Devils still have made the playoffs, so that loss doesnt make much difference in the long run, except eliminate us for competition for the region crown. I can deal with the loss, but it is embarrasing when you lose without discipline. I have nothing more to say about this game, sorry guys.

WEEK 9: Chiefs searching for a win
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
This football season began with something not many Chief fans are familiar with these days: a loss. After falling to Etowah, the Chiefs got back on their feet against region cupcakes Osborne, Chapel Hill, and Woodland, outscoring these three opponents 111-7 en route to a 3-1 record. The Chiefs faced a challenge in week 5 as Cherokee squeaked by 35-28 at Skip Pope Stadium in their annual Canton Bowl. Sequoyah got back to its winning ways the following week with a 35-0 stomping of Alexander in the Wildcat den.. but have dropped 2 games since.
At Lithia Springs in week 7, the refs were terrible. It was the same group of zebras that cost Sequoyah a 9-1 record in the 2003 regular season at Centennial in which our head coach complained about them to the GHSFA and they were not fined or fired. I guess it came back to haunt us as Sequoyah fell 27-31 on an EXTREMELY controversial pass interference call that gave the Lions the win and us a 4-3 record.
Homecoming was themed “Dancing Through the Decades” with great homecoming parade and king and queen Will Schweigert and Mercedez Moniz being the only winners as the Chiefs dropped their 2nd straight matchup against Douglas County. The Tigers, however, are battling for a top position in the Region 5-AAAA standings with unbeaten East Paulding, whom the Chiefs play tonight.
As for playoff hopes, the picture is still not clear. Lithia Springs will probably lose their last two games against East Paulding and Douglas Co, sweeping them out of the picture with a 4-6 record. The same goes for Pebblebrook, who sits in contention for the 4th playoff spot. If Pebblebrook loses to Cherokee tonight, and Sequoyah defeats Pebblebrook on Senior Night at Skip Pope in week 10 (very likely), we are guaranteed a spot with a near-.500 record. The Falcons would lose the tie break and drop out with a 5-5 record. It’s all hypotheical though. But I forsee my predictions being right. It’s just the way that the region has worked over the past two seasons.
As for tonight, the Raiders are strong. But Sequoyah has put up CLOSE fights with some good teams this season (Cherokee, most of all). It should be a good one down in Raider Valley. Had to give up my mascot position tonight because of Region 5-AAAA cross country championships tomorrow in Douglasville. I’m always there in spirit. Go Chiefs!

Chamblee avenges last year’s heartbreakers
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Revenge is a sweet feeling.
As many of you may know, the Bulldogs and Dunwoody Wildcats don’t usually get along. We share the same stadium, same region, and around the same location. So when Dunwoody beat Chamblee in 2006, a loss that kept us out of the playoffs, we were already planning vengeance for 2007.
The planning paid off; Chamblee pulverized the Wildcats 27-0. The Bulldogs dominated Dunwoody offense, holding them to 136 total yards, and controlled the ground game, accumulating 272 rushing yards.
It was ironic that the next game on our schedule was Grady, last year’s other heartbreaker. In a game televised on CSS, the Bulldogs bashed the Grey Knights 49-21. Chamblee halfback Darius Jones rushed for 113 yards and three touchdowns, earning him the title CSS Player of the Game. Garrett Williams also posted an impressive performance by rushing for 86 yards.
A notable problem resurfaced against Grady: Chamblee defense continued to be lit up on pass plays. If an adjustment is not made, top quality teams will exploit this weakness.
