Friday Night Controversy

Ok, now I know there is a lot of contoversy on the last play, the fumble. The ref made the call for a single reason, AD crossed the plane with the ball, causing the play to be dead and the result being a touchdown. I was there in person on the 10 yard sideline and saw it cross the plane. I’ve seen the tape on it numerous times and each time from each angle shows it crossing the plane. This is all just a bunch of PTR people wanting to start a row ebcause they lost. Yes, I admit AD fumbled the ball, and it probally was a PTR player who recovered it, but the ball crossed the plane when AD had it under control. The result, every time, is a touchdown.

Touchdown: When any part of the ball, legally in possession of a player inbounds, breaks the plane of the opponent’s goal line, provided it is not a touchback.

The ball never crossed the plane of the goal line while it was in control of the running back. Only AFTER the running back fumbled the ball did it go into the end zone. It was clear on the replay the ball was fumbled prior to the goal line and rolled into the end zone where it was recovered by a PTR player. CSS showed the play numerous times and it was NOT a touchdown. By the way, I am not a fan of PTR or Roswell but Roswell’s ‘win’ should have an *. The GHSA does not have the balls (no pun intended) to over-rule the incorrect call. The high school football fans across the state will be pulling against Roswell after this year’s PTR game and last years when they failed to play-to-win.

No, I’m not wrong. I have access to every camera in the stadium as my dad is the video coach. I’ve seen it from every single camera, and the ball crossed the plane, eve if it shows only the tip crossing, like it does in a few shots, it’s still a touchdown.

I’m not here to argue about it. If you’re just p** becuase RHS won, then go back to the weightroom (PTR and other teams mad about this) and get ready for next year. Whats done is done and it won’t change.

You Gwinnecians just need to suck it up and move on. Get ready for next year. Too bad you did not have that fat-a** Gwinnett homer side judge from last years Collins Hill-Roswell game to help you out. The only bad calls are the ones against Gwinnett teams, right?

I hope Roswell goes all the way.

I was in the end zone and watched it on TV.

The ball was loose when it crossed the plane and the knees were down at the one and a half yard line.

Even my Roswell friends have told me PR got screwed.

Take the win and go all the way but don’t try and say it was a TD without provideing the Video.

I thought nothing could be worse than the “Tie”, I was wrong.

Good Luck.

PR got hosed and Roswell knows it! Not the refs fault he could not see in that poorly lit rec field that they call a stadium. They should have used their booster dollars more wisely…instead of paying off the refs, they should have invested in better lighting and visitors side seating. The whole state saw it on tv and the news stations admitted it was the wrong call…Go Cornets!

You’re Incorrect,

You need to look a little closer on the CSS replay. I have watched it many times frame by frame and Alex disappears off the screen from his shoulders to the ball, so you can never see exactly when the ball comes loose. As the camera pans to the goal line you see the ball sitting on the goal line and then bouncing into the field of play. The referee has a perfect view of the play and the supposed fumble and calls it a TD. It is impossible to see exactly when the ball came out from the CSS replays. We have to rely on the officials call that had the perfect view. There is no doubt that it was a very close play, but as the PR coach said, that is High School football. It was a great game by both teams and Roswell came out on the winning side. End of discussion.

Jealous…of what? Cant be your team or your stadium (lack there of). The games over, you get to play another week due to a bad call in OT! Its clear that those refs made a mistake. We have no say in the matter, just thought that Roswell had alot of money over there so expected a much nicer facility!

Fabulous game. No one deserved to lose. A couple of key points. Don’t be a hater on Roswell. What about your Peachtree Ridge coaching, 2:03 on the clock in the 4th Quarter and three straight passes to stop the clock. That is what gave Roswell a chance to tie it. Oh yeah and I guess you may want to double cover Garret Embry and not leave him in single coverage with 25 seconds to go. Live and learn.

Great Game glad I was there to watch it. If Peachtree Ridge had won I would be rooting fo you guys against Lowndes.

Sorry for all involved that it ended with controversy but human error [if it was such] is a part of highschool football. Roswell has had more than it’s fair share of bad calls throughout all its’ games. Sometimes one cant help but wonder if officiating has been biased against us. It is nice to have one call go your way.

I know this is not consoling to the P’Ridge fans out there but hey, this is football and that’s the way it goes dudes . You gave us a great game guys and have nothing to be ashamed of. Good luck next year.

No worse than the roughing the “passer” call that gave PR a first down on an incomplete pass 3rd and 8 last year. A runner outside the hashmarks pump-faking every step is not a “passer.”

PR fans, don’t say things to embarrass the rest of us. It’s about the Pride, not the proud.

Roswell Home side and field are very nice. Visitor’s side and baseball bleachers are a little weak. PR has a very good natural turf field. It would be awesome to play RHS at PR Lion’s Den next year in the playoffs and beat the defending State Champs on our way to win next year. Let the rest of the state hate both of us.

Sticking with football, we had “The Tie” now “The Fumble”. A great rivalry has been born. Let’s hope both schools continue to play this level of football and meet every year. GHSA fixed the overtime rule because of the first game maybe they will go with instant replay. NOT.

On the CSS video it looks like the out stretched hands with ball come out off the refs ear and are hit by right shoulder of the defender coming across the goal line and the ball bounces onto the goal line.

What about the mystery holding call on Dustin T. 22 yard scramble for a touchdown. Face it dude your defense deserved to win, your offense did nothing. You had one drive the whole game. You scored a field goal on a fumble short field, you returned a botched field goal for a touchdown. Check the drive charts for Roswell touchdowns, especially the last one long sustained drives. Converted two 4th downs in the drive to tie the game. You had plenty of chances to stop Roswell, You didn’t! Also your coaches failed to understand that if they ran the ball with two minutes remaining they would have won the game. We would not had enought time for our monster receiver to catch a 37 yard touchdown over your all world defensive backs. Once again in overtime you did not score you had to kick a field goal. Your offense lost the game as well as your poor coaching in the final two minutes and by overtime your defense was flat worn out.

How can Roswell “cheat” when the refs call the game? Did we change the scoreboard? Did we make the refs make the call they made? They did the best that they could and you don’t like it. Maybe you should check back with the coaching staff at PTR for some answers on how they handled the last 2 minutes of the game. Perhaps RHS will lose Friday but I am sure that they will give it their all…and they should be proud of the season(s) they’ve had. Anyway, it is a great rivalry now with PTR and the future will have more controversies I am sure…as for the money you said you thought Roswell had and our field….grow up, please.

P.S. If we played by NFL rules as you posted, you would have heard this at the conclusion of the play. “After further review the player lost control of the football before crossing the plain of the goal resulting in a fumble. The defense recovered the ball. Touchdown nullified, Lions win.

By RHS99

November 26, 2007 9:11 PM | Link to this

Do you really think PRHS deserved to win that game? I have heard all day you dominated. Lets see Alex Daniels had over 200 plus yards rushing, Garret Embry aka monster had 10 catches for 137 yards and a touchdown in the last 25 seconds. You gave up close to 500 yards total offense. And you moved the ball on one possession for a score, other than that shut out. Ask your defense if they could have gone another quarter, they were out of gas and on roller skates.

Lets hear about your coaching with 2:03 to go and RHS with one timeout. And you pass the ball 3 times and use no time off the clock. Terrible, remember we scored with 25 seconds to go on a do or die drive. Maybe running the ball once, would have won the game for PRHS.

Thank god Roswell fumbled and turned it over a few times or it would have been a blowout. Lets see Roswell beat Brookwood to open the season in the Dome and quite frankly they were the best team we have played all year. Thanks for supporting us against Lowndes, we always support the Northern schools when they go south.

RHS99- Not sure what you are talking about wiht your region being better. You seen R1’s teams? They make R6 look like scrubs. Apart from Roswell and Walton. Who else? Chatahoochee???? Weak. Lowndes, Valdosta, Tift, and Coffee. WAY BETTER. Easily a tougher region than 6. R1 may be the BEST in the state.

As far as the PTR-ROS game goes. It was a fumble, obviously. PTR got cheated (no, Roswell didnt cheat) and should have moved on to play Lowndes. Either way i think Lowdnes wins that game. Yes, Alex Daniel is good, but he needs to learn how to hold onto the ball in the big game. And those FG screwups gotta be fixed. 2 vs South Gwinnett and one vs PTR. not good. Good luck againts Lowndes though….you’ll need it.

Smokey, I’m gonna talk to Scott (the lead blog directer for the AJC) and see if I can upload it. And ya, the NFL definition of a toiuchdown is universal, not different for each league.

Steven, I could delete all your comments for what you’ve been saying, but I love watching people make idiots of themselves online.

And lastly, Yyes the play was a contorversial call, and I remember 3 controversial calls the whole game, and 2 out of 3 of them went to PTR. Dupart didnt hold the guy, he hit him square inn the front and pancaked him, the guy just cried to the refs til the flag got thrown. And the personnal foul that got waved off? You’re coverage team hit Keegan a good two seconds after he caught the ball with a fair catch. Dont go crying to mommy Just because we got the game winning controversial call,.

Just watched the tape again. For the record there was a ref within 5 yards of the play not sure what you call him but he lines up within the linebackers and he did not raise his arms. No one had a better view or could ever be a better witness to that play. What a travesty for the wrong team to be advancing to the playoffs. My hats off to PRHS players. They won in the hearts and minds of 70% of online voters who agree with me that it was a fumble before the goal line. End of story.

By footballfan

November 26, 2007 10:52 PM | Link to this

Both Teams are very good. Remember they are both State Champs. Nobody deserved to lose.

Don’t make the whole game a controversy.

It was a fumble. Referee called it a TD. Roswell moves on. History goes to the victor.

Fair catch was a decoy, raised his hand once droped it, probably would have run the ball..it was an instant hit but not slobber knocker.

Steven if you knew what was going on you would know better. One of the reasons Duluth is so bad is because of PR. How many players at PR came up in the Duluth Youth Program? Your going to have to be better than that to convince anybody you go to PR.

There will never be honor in your tainted victory Roswell fans. Your emotional appeals for everyone to believe your version of events is proof enough. The football gods will take care of you this Friday. Your fallow attempts to convince reasonable people that you truly won this game is not surprising. True champions are men of honor and integrity, something your players, fans and coaches know little about.

By Roswell God

November 26, 2007 11:33 PM | Link to this

So are you suggesting that we call the GHSA and tell them that we don’t want to play next week because we feel bad about PTR losing. Controversy in football happens all the time. Roswell was obviously the better team friday night, aside from Kevin Minter, who was outstanding. It was one of the best games I have seen at any level and quite ironic that it did go to a tiebreaker. Chris’s dad is the Video guy for the high school and i know we have about 10 cameras around the stadium so im sure he will upload one. The view on CSS was impossible to tell because the ref was in the way. To Proud Lion, the referee who stands by the LBs does not have priority over the call. The two officials looking straight down the goal line do and they both raise there hands at the same time. Coincidence?

By Proud Lion

November 26, 2007 11:46 PM | Link to this

Okay. Show us the video then. You really expect reasonable people to believe that your high school had more cameras at this game (10) than even a college or pro game and at various angles. Where was the sky cam? huh? Prove it to everyone and you can put the controversy to rest. I’ll give you another idea too so when you come back online to say that AJC won’t let you upload it…put it on your football web page. Seems if this kid’s dad is who he says he is that shouldn’t be a problem now should it. Don’t back down now, it was your idea.

By Proud Lion

November 26, 2007 11:51 PM | Link to this

By the way..there was only one ref with raised arms and there is no such thing is one ref having priority. You must not have had audio on your CSS tape either…the announcers where adamant about what they saw too…the fumble. The ref who raised his arms was not blocking the CSS camera. It captured the moment and the ball came out before the goal line. There is no honor in lying about it.

By Proud Lion

November 26, 2007 11:59 PM | Link to this

To be more precise the kid had the ball in his right hand only. His left hand comes within an inch or two of the goal line when Minter connects with him. The ball pops out of the right hand and bounces one foot from the goal line into the end zone where PRHS recovered it. CSS has the whole thing on tape. The ref who called it is off to the left of the frame. The blame is really on the refs. They got it wrong but for you guys to insist on twisting the truth shows what kind of people you are. Champions are men of honor and integrity.

Sure, we could break down the timeouts and the down and distance and it could have been a whole differernt story..but attack the players and/or coaches, it is pointless, like you say it is what it is..a bad call by the ref. We are the only game still being talked about this week.

Your topic is “Friday Night Controversy” not “Poor Clock Management” so do the right thing, Post the evidence or let the rest of us know that you know it was a bad call but either way go win on Friday..It doesn’t do PR any good if you loose, we at The Ridge want to know that we could have won this next game.

To Chris Orf..you said you had the video to prove your position and your dad was the video guy for your school. If he doesn’t know how to get it on you tube or your own web site then you should be man enough to take back your absurd statement. My son graduated fm PRHS last year and was a starting OL man. I have no kid playing but have a vested interest in the game. What I can’t take is the refs giving this game away. I’m not saying your guys cheated. But there is more honor and respect to be gained by your coaches, players and fans admitting what everyone else knows. Our coach is an honorable man. He is not speaking but he knows in his heart what happened. I feel bad for the seniors on our team. They deserved to go on because they won the game. These refs, the whole bunch of them, are a disgrace to GHSA football and I hope Dr. Swearingen takes action to make sure something like this never happens again. There is no honor in a tainted victory!

I’m going to get the film from the coaches tomorrow, as my dad turns the films in on Sunday, and I’ve been home with the stomach flu the past two days so I couldn’t get them. Even if I am wrong, which I don’t think I am, I’ll upload them, Scott wants me to show him the film and then he’ll upload it. And I LOVE how all the PTR fans don’t even mention the other two game changing bad calls in the game that went in your favor, hypocrite.

Prhs#1, no one at Roswell cares that everyone wants us out of the playoffs. The same insults were being slung at us after we beat Brookwood last year, they said there were bad calls and that the Hornets didn’t deserve to win. “Every team” wanted us out of the playoffs just like PTR does. We thrive off being the under dogs. We love it when people call us out and tell us that we’re gonna lose. Keep ‘em coming.

To Chris Orf…as suspected you’re already hedging your bet..”even if I’m wrong”..I thought you already saw the film convincingly enough to make such an outrageous statement when you said you had 10 different camera angles..ha ha…you’ll make a great sports writer one day or liberal politician because you seem to be already good at lying, reinventing reality then trying to convince reasonable people that you’re right. Good luck kid! For the record..there were no other “game changing” calls Friday night and there is not one single hypocritical thing I have said since I discovered your bs on this blog. You and people like you always try to silence or discredit people who speak to the truth. Admit your mistake and say that the refs made a big mistake and you have no conclusive evidence to the contrary. There is no justification for your team moving on to the next round hence your team is destined to fail. There is no honor in a tainted victory!

AJC polls state that 47% of voters believe Roswell is most likely defending Champion to lose this Friday…twice as much as any of the other teams….and….65% of voters believe it was a fumble on Friday night…..only 20% believe it was a touchdown with 15% undecided…looks pretty clear to most of us what really happened.

Chris, the deal is these guys are not going to believe you even if you show the film to them. People have the right to voice their opinions, but this is getting out of control. The game is over. We saw the phantom holding / clipping penalty when the QB ran into the endzone and we saw #7 run into the returner calling a faircatch and the refs waving off the penalty. The deal is penalties are going to be called and missed. However, in the end this play was a touchdown as the video shows.

“OK you guys are right, it was a fumble and the Ref blew the call..and that was what happened. It is a shame that it ended that way but there isn’t anything that can be done about it, even coach Ballard has aid the only thing to do is move on. PR and RHS are both equaly good teams and we got the benifit of the bad call, I hope we have a chance to play again next year.”

Something like that would be what a Champion would say to a Champion. Your team is not a loser so don’t keep making them sound like it.

I look forward to the 3rd round. RHS, don’t deny what happened and make it worse. Everybody hates people like that…Bill Clinton.

By the way, there is no way your coach is going to let anybody see that film out of respect for the other coach. Chris you are not in the coaching faternity and neither are you HS football fan.

RHS13 you are right on what you say about the call but it stopped there. I will only respond when you present wrong “facts”. I also don’t have a kid at PR. I did and will again. Roswell is part of the Fulton County School System; it is the only Fulton county school that has a city name and is the largest public school in Fulton. Anybody in Fulton County can attend RHS with a permissive transfer. Roswell does not have a School System. A good portion of the students at CHS also live in Roswell and a good number of kids that go to Roswell don’t live in the city limits or even the US MAIL Roswell Zip codes. The example in Gwinnett County is Norcross and Duluth. RHS pulls off the same population that PR does and very similar in demographics and SAT scores.

Peachtree Ridge or PR not PTR is a new School Community formed from Duluth, North Gwinnett, and Collins Hill. It does not draw kids from all over the county. Gwinnett County has the highest standardized testing scores in the State of Georgia not Fulton County.

This is good healthy debate, so why shouldn’t we participate…and you will read this.

It seems that the film will stay in the can locked in the coaches’ vault. Chris has probably been asked to stay of the board.

We can all agree it was a bad call by the ref and hope RHS gets another chance next year.

Dear Chris….unless I’ve misunderstood your last post you are now admitting that it was a fumble therefore a bad call by the refs. Thats good enough for me. Nevertheless, it is still a crying shame that bad officiating can have that much of an impact on a game. The only solution since replay is not a viable option is to run them out of the game in Georgia each and everytime something like this happens. No hard feelings here but I still believe you guys will go down Friday because you don’t deserve to be there.

We at Roswell are just living right! Second rounds have been good to us lately. Last year in the second Brookwood wiped the field with us, outgained us like 10 to 1. We won with just three plays, one being a major penalty. They also had a kicker that left 10 or 13 points on the field. Now this year PeachTree Ridge, I mean, the officals give us a second round game. Second round life is good.

Moving on. This is all very interesting but re-opens the door to the prespective of why the OT rule existed last year.PR and RHS have become the catalyst for debate and change.

If this had been the champonship game, is this a better outcome than what happened last year?

Should the rule have been changed?

A coach from another school told me that this is exactly why the old rule was in place.

To Football Fan…that’s the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard. The solution in this particular case is to get rid of the officials who called this game. They are embarrassing to GHSA. The tie rule never made sense and was certainly not there to prevent situations like this. That debate has been decided. What we should be debating is how to rid ourselves of sloppy officiating, at the very least, or how to institute a replay rule into playoff games.

By footballfan

Proud Lion, just throwing out the discussion, it seems we would eventully run out of officials if we shot them all.

  • Roswell fans, we have been in the same boat as Peachtree Ridge is right now. It sucks losing on a controverisal play. Remember Parkview 2005?

Proud Lion: if you are typical of Peachtree Ridge supporters, the school has my sympathy.

Last year, Roswell kicked your rear end for 3 quarters before 2 very dubious roughing the passer penalties against the Hornets led to 2 PR scores and a tie game. The Pussycats had 4th and 1 from their 38 with just under a minute to play and punted in a display of true cowardice.

This time around, Roswell dominated the game for all 4 quarters on both sides of the ball. The only reason the game was remotely close was Roswell mistakes and a suspect penalty that nullified a Roswell touchdown. The classy but somewhat clueless PR coaching staff made 2 boneheaded decisions late in the game — 1 on offense and 1 on defense — that eased Roswell’s comeback.

But all you whiners can do is go boo-hoo-hoo about a call by an official that nobody — I repeat NOBODY — knows was the correct call or not. The TV guys don’t know, the players don’t know, and you fer dam sure don’t know.

I wonder how a team with as much talent as PR has managed to finish fourth in its region 2 years in a row? Got any ideas, genius?

Roswell Alien.. Yes I am typical of PR people…we’re honest and we know how to spell. You guys played to tie last year remember..you had the ball last…besides Butler missed to chip shot field goals because of the pressure created by the press of playing behind his famous dad. This year every HONEST person knows PR won the game. The officials can take a game away from you in the record books but not in the hearts and minds of HONEST people. Better luck next time loser.

Proud Lion: Not sure what you do for a living, but you have the makings of an excellent politician. You didn’t address a single issue I raised and have created your own little alternate universe you can exist in.

Why did your brave Lions punt on 4th & 1 from the 38 with just under a minute to play? No guts, no answer. On first down in a tie game from your own 11 yard line and less than 30 seconds to play, you play safe. Your coaches elected to play for a tie, not Roswell’s. But as a deluded PR supporter, you can’t accept the obvious.

You say every HONEST person knows Roswell lost. No offense, but the final score was 23-20 Roswell, and no one has yet provided a conclusive replay that shows Daniel fumbling before the ball crossed the plane. Since you’re obviously such an honest guy, why don’t you explain how your great team with all those D1 prospects has finished 4th in its region 2 years in a row? Not holding my breath waiting for an answer.

One curiousity question. How did you guys conveniently wind up with another school’s quarterback?

    By Proud Lion

    December 1, 2007 5:32 PM | Link to this

Roswell Alien you should know that Region 7 is loaded with studs. Ever heard of Cameron Heyward? He’s a defensive starter for Ohio State who was kicking your butt the whole game last year. For the record Asher was not a QB at his prior school. And you seem to be oblivious to the CSS film of last Friday’s game. It’s pretty obvious so let me point it out to you because I recorded it. AD had the ball in his right hand. His left hand is inches from the goal line when Minter smacks him from his left side which causes him to drop the ball (in his right hand) which clearly rolls into the end zone. His right hand was not the leading hand and the ball never crossed the line. Your buddy host of this blog Chris has still not posted the video evidence he has been claiming to have. Why? Because there is none! You guys are more bitter than ever now. The whole metro area loves Peachtree Ridge Lions. Last years cinderella team. The CSS announcers from last nights game were still talking about how we got screwed. We’re loved, we’re honest and we play with integrity, something your team and coaches know little about otherwise they would have made a public statement to the effect. That would have been the honorable thing to do and then maybe we’d have been pulling for your team. North Gwinnett will be the Champion this year and keep the trophy in Region 7.

Proud Lion: Since you refuse to leave your wonderful alternate universe and return to the confines of reality, this will my last response. I haven’t seen the clip you apparently have studied as if it was the Zapruder film. What I saw on CSS and other highlight shows was totally inconclusive.

Maybe Allen did fumble. If so, so what? Oh, I get it. The only bad calls by the officials that matter are (a) the last one of the game; and (b) ones that goes against your team. Obviously your team got the shaft. How do I know? The TV announcers said so, and we all know their word is gospel.

The whole metro area loves the Lions. According to you of course. A cinderella team with D1 prospects out the wazoo that underachieves during the season before making a mark in the playoffs. The same team that got completely outplayed for 7 of the 8 quarters against Roswell the past 2 seasons. Havn’t heard you address that one yet.

If Roswell decides to “do the right thing” (in your one-sdied judgment) and acknowledge that PR should have won last week, will the mighty Lions concede that 1 or both roughing the passer penalties last year were bogus, and Roswell deserves to have the outright state title?

Didn’t think so. Enjoy the next episode of the science fiction show of your choice.

The one living in science fiction is the one with a name like Roswell Alien…loser..and the film I studied is pretty simple..it’s the CSS game film viewed on slow motion something even a moron like you should be able to do.

I watched two different views of the play. The CSS one is too close to call. It has a bad angle and the view of the ball is blocked. The one available at Beaconcast.com is better, and it appears the ball crossed the goal line, but it is still too close to call.

Proud Lion, it’s over. The game ended. Take a cue from your team and take it with class.

You must have been buzzed when you saw the replay Buzz Boy. Its clear on CSS. Keep in mind our host here claimed to have had 10 cameras at the game and had concluive evidence yet he finally did the honorable thing and backed of his ridiculous statement. So should you. The game is history and so is your team. We’ll whip your butts again and again and those refs won’t be there to bail you out.

Mission over. I’m out of here. Go Lions!

I have read so much on PR and Roswell bloggs concerning the fumble. Okay, request a special permit from the Georgia Athletic Association to play again in the dome. This may sound crazy but I bet a lot of money would be made for both schools. It is bad to end a season on a controversay. Northside- WR had a similiar thing happen to them in 2005 in the State Championship game with Statesboro. With 2-minutes left in the game and deep in Statesboro territory (game tied 10-10) NSWR tried a pass in the flat, the receiver couldn’t hold on to the ball. He jumped up to return to his huddle, a referee from down field said he fumble the ball. Statesboro ran two plays than kicked a field goal(13-10). So Hornets, I feel your pain. It left a bitter taste in NSWR mouth until they won the championship in 2006.

If your dad agrees with you , he should be fired for having poor vision while operating video equipment. You also should never try to get a job in video equipment. I watched the play over and over again on DVR. The ball never even got CLOSE to the plane. It was like about half a yard out. The only thing is if the ref. saw that a Roswell player recovered it in the endzone. But im 99% sure that was not the case. Peachtree Ridge got robbed and molested with that call.
