Chamblee stuns the playoff picture

The Bulldogs are rolling through the AAA playoffs.

But first, how did they get here?

Chamblee clinched a playoff berth with a victory over Riverwood 41-14. In the final game of the regular season, the Bulldogs routed North Atlanta 42-0 creating some momentum prior to playoff time.

The third-seeded Bulldogs were not thrown any bones. Their first round opponent was the number two-seeded Flowery Branch Falcons. The Falcons were previously 11-1 largely due to the fantastic play of dual-threat quarterback Jaybo Shaw.

Even Jaybo could not save the ill-fated Falcons. Chamblee triumphed 47-34 in a tightly contested game.

The Chamblee offense wrecked the Falcon’s defense by mixing a relentless ground game with a few downfield shots. The Bulldogs accumulated 532 yards of total offense. Also, the Chamblee offense assisted their defense by keeping Flowery Branch off the field with several lengthy drives.

The Bulldog’s defense deserves just as much credit as the offense. After being lit up early by the Falcon’s offensive attack, Chamblee’s defense recovered with a couple crucial stops in the second half. In addition, the Bulldogs picked off Jaybo Shaw (just his fourth interception all year) at the end of the game to really put Flowery Branch in a jam.

There was no time for celebration.

Chamblee’s second round opponent was the 11-0 Stephens County Indians. The Indians featured a high-powered offense anchored by running back Tauren Poole (committed to Tennessee). The Bulldogs would need another dazzling performance to tackle this new obstacle.

Chamblee got just that. In a wild game filled with twists and turns, Chamblee won 58-57 by scoring the two-point conversion in the first overtime.

This game will be quite memorable to say the least. After going back and forth for most of the game, Chamblee scored and converted the two-point conversion to make it 43-42 with 45 seconds left.

The Indians wasted no time. Stephens scored a touchdown with the two-point conversion in under 25 seconds to retake the lead 50-43.

The Bulldogs were too tough to give up there. Chamblee sent the game to overtime with a miracle touchdown throw to Malcolm Beyah.

In overtime, the Indians drew first blood. Stephens County easily scored seven to make the scoreboard read 57-50.

Nevertheless, those pesky Bulldogs would not let up. Chamblee quickly countered with a touchdown of their own. However, the Bulldogs decided to put the whole game on a two-point conversion. Warren Norman scored with ease on a running play strung to the right.

The teams combined for more than 1,100 yards of total offense. Statistically, the best performance went to Warren Norman who rushed for 291 yards and four touchdowns.

Chamblee would not have won without some great strategy and gutsy calls form the Bulldog’s coaching staff. They deserve just as much credit as the players for these wild wins.
