Dream Crushers

Every football players dream is to be part of a perfect team. Last Thursday night, the North Cobb Warriors went to sleep dreaming about continuing their winning ways in their already perfect 10-0 season. But they forgot one little thing. They were not playing some scrub #4 seed. They were playing the defending State Champions, a team I believe is worthy of a #2 seed.

North Cobb got off to a quick start and scored on the first drive. Matt Roark was running all over the field for the Warriors. North Cobb looked as if they would take things into the half with a 14-7 lead. But Mitchell Williford and Asher Clark had other plans. With just 7.2 seconds left, Clark fired a 29 yard pass to Williford who made a spectacular catch in the endzone. Greg Johnson’s XP was good and the Lions had tied the game at the end of the half. What a momentum swing.

Early in the second half, Brandon Davis broke off a 70 yard run which set up and eventual 1 yard TD run by Ronnie Smith. Davis finished with 145 yards on the ground. Kavoskee Simpson stepped up big and got his frist interception of the night on the next drive. Asher Clark then hit Derrick Bryant on a 42-yard pass for another Lions TD. It made the score 28-14. The Lions soon got the ball back and they were ready to attempt a 32-yard FG. But Coach Ballard decided to pull a little trickery, and holder Bo Mack dropped by to pass and threw a 15 yard TD pass to Nick Gubitoso. The Lions then led 35-14. It looked as if Peachtree Ridge was going to run away from North Cobb, on their own field! North Cobb had a furious comeback, bringing the score to 35-28. The Warriors drove down the Lions 5 yard line with less than a minute to play. Kavoskee Simpson read Matt Roark’s eyes and stepped in front of the WR and intercepted the pass which sealed the fate of North Cobb’s ALMOST perfect season.

The Lions upset of the Warriors sets up a second round matchup for the ages. Peachtree Ridge will play Roswell this Friday night, which is a rematch of the 2006 AAAAA State Championship that ended in a 14-14 tie. Be looking out for my preview of that game within the next few days. The anticipation is so great and i am looking forward to a great game.

This blog was written based on personal accounts of others and of the Atlanta Journal Constitution. I was not in attendance, but I was there in spirit and I celebrated at my hotel in Jesup, GA. Everyone have a great Turkey Day and be safe! GO LIONS!
