We Like #4
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
I think it is safe to say that the Lion’s were pretty happy with their #4 seed last year. Many people are critical, and complain that the Lions had an easy road to the Championship. Okay sure, maybe Wheeler was definetely not #1 seed caliber but the following teams were all phenominal: Campbell, Stephenson, Warner Robins, and Roswell. All fine teams. This year, the road will be just as hard for the Lions and it starts Friday night against the #1 ranked North Cobb Warriors. The Warriors (10-0) are not only a #1 seed but they are #1 in the state. It will be a mighty tough challenge for the fourth seeded Lions (7-3). The winner of the game will definetely have THE hardest road to the Championship with following round games potentially being against Roswell, Lowndes, possibly Norcross or Stephenson then the finals.
North Cobb comes into the game as the defineite favorite and one of the favorites to win the State Title. My only question is can they live up to the hype? They play in Region 5 which in my opinion may be the 2nd weakest metro Atlanta region. The did give the Harrison Hoyas their only loss of the season. But North Cobb won that game by one point. They also led Etowah by 28 i believe and then the Eagles came back and nearly shocked the Warriors and the state. They won that game by seven. Now, i will give them this, they beat Marietta 49-0. So against playoff teams, North Cobb is 3-0. North Cobb is 10-0 and due for a loss.
Peachtree Ridge is the underdog in this one, but as I said before, we don’t mind that at all. I have talked to several football players this week, and just by the tone of their voices, they will be ready Friday night. The excitement and intensity is there. Now, we know how Peachtree Ridge has done this year. 1-3 against playoff teams…. not too good. But i still believe we are better than Grayson and Mill Creek, even though they beat us i still think we are better. So our record against playoff teams should be 3-1. The high point in the Lions season came against win over the then #1 ranked Norcross Blue Devils.
The report on North Cobb: The have a stout defense, and an explosive offense. The defense has given up on average 10.2 points a game. The offense however, averages 36.1 per game which ranks 2nd in the state. They run a spread offense that is filled with balance and speed. Highlighted by QB Matt Roark and Rb Calvin Middleton, the offense of North Cobb is very hard to contain. They love to spread the defense out wide, and then run up the middle with Roark and Middleton. But also, the DB’s of Peachtree Ridge cannot led their guard down otherwise they may watch WRs Rico Mack and Michael Emerson stroll into the endzone.
What Peachtree Ridge Must Do: The Lions cannot come into this game saying we must stop the run or we must stop the passing. They must stop it all. North Cobb is so balanced, that they can kill you both ways. The Warriors also have a strong O-Line which will be a great matchup with Lions D-Line. Peachtree Ridge first must pressure Roark and stop Middleton. I think we stand a better chance with North Cobb passing it more often. The Ridge secondary is full of D-1 talent and especially if the line gets pressure on Roark and he is forced to throw bad passes then the DB’s may have a huge night. That is the key to the game. Slowing down the North Cobb offense. That’s much easier said than done. The Lions should be okay offensively, considering they have combined to score 100+ in their last two games ( now granted, that was Duluth and North Fosryth). I expect a big night from Lions RB Brandon Davis; he thrives under these types of situations. I saw film a week or so ago, of Davis leaving five Wheeler players on the seat of their pants in one run last year in the playoffs. On of the most amazing high school runs that i have seen in person. The play resulted in 40 yards. The Lions have to play possibly the best game of the season to move on into the playoffs.
Sidenotes: Peachtree Ridge was ranked #4 last year as well (like i said earlier). They went on to the State Championship.
Last year’s first round game was also in Cobb County. The Lions won.
This years game is exactly 355 days from last years first round game.
The Lions have already beaten the #1 Ranked team in the State this year, that was Norcross.
My Picks For Round One (winner in bold):
Walton-Parkview
Harrison-Mill Creek
MLK-Paulding
Valdosta-Bradwell
Brookwood-Sprayberry
North Gwinnett-Marietta
Newnan-Redan
Jenkins-Coffee
Lowndes-Windsor Forest
Douglass-Mundy’s Mill
Roswell-South Gwinnett
Camden-Tift
E Coweta-Stephenson
Norcross-Etowah
Grayson-Hooch
And Finally… North Cobb-Peachtree Ridge
I will not be in attendance. I would have definetely traveled to see my team play North Cobb but I will be in Jesup, Georgia for the State One Act Play Competition which takes place on Saturday. I am excited yet disappointed i cant be at the game. But believe me i will be getting constant text messages to keep me up-to-date.
Well everyone have a great weekend! GO LIONS! Go region 7!
