Deja Vu = Norcross are Region Champs!
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Ah yes, we all know it. Norcross is once again the champions of 7-AAAAA football! We defeated North Gwinnett by 10 points. It was at the same time, a surprise and a… not-surprise. It was a surprise because the Bulldogs were undefeated 9-0 before coming to the Blue Devil stadium. But then again, this has happened before except that both of us were undefeated yet we came out victorious! So, we just repeated the past. I had heard that North Gwinnett was seriously ready for this game, but we were better! And the sweet thing is, we are the first high school to gain the Region title back-to-back for football in history!
The anticipation for this game was too high to even describe! And, what a show it was, as fans from both schools packed the stadium to cheer on the team for the championship! As the game finally began, fans were already screaming their lungs a lot. We were returned a thank you as the Blue Devils made a touchdown in the first few minutes of the first quarter. The exhilaration did not stop there, as we continued to blast through with a second touchdown still in the first quarter and not letting the Bulldogs accomplish anything; the Bulldogs had finally made a touchdown near the end of the second quarter. Not much action took place as the teams were equally strong in the second quarter, however we squeezed in another touchdown! Then, the half-time show…
In honor of Veteran’s Day (Sunday, Nov. 11) and to simply recognize the United States Military, Coast Guard, Marines, Air Force, and Army for all their hard work, the bands of Norcross & N. Gwinnett took the stage together to play ‘Armed Forces Salute” and “America the Beautiful” as a large U.S. flag was revealed on the field. Something beautiful indeed, and something new for a change in the half-time show program.
As soon as the clock hit zero, the teams were well prepared to continue fighting in the second half. The Bulldogs took us by surprise as they claimed the third quarter to themselves with their own touchdown. As the fans roared at their quick victory, we both knew that time was of the essence. We had to still say strong until the gamed ended, making sure that the Bulldogs would not get ahead - and they never did.
“To get back-to-back region championships is just awesome,” head coach Keith Maloof said. “I’m just proud of these kids and my coaches, and the way [my team] came out and played. We’ll be tough to beat if we keep playing like that.”
This victory against an undefeated team just shows that we are ready for the playoffs, and what a statement it was to beat one of the best, twice in a row!
“We just wanted this one,” D.J. Adams said, “so we had to get it.”
