Playoff spot clinched, momentum intact

Simply put, the Harrison Hoya football team is on a roll and refuses to be stopped. This past Friday as the Hoyas came off their bye week, they found themselves pitted against the McEachern Indians. Contrary to any concerns that were held prior to the game about how the bye week might affect the play of our Hoyas, it quickly became apparent that the off week had little or no effect on the team as they obliterated yet another team. Going into the game on Friday, the situation was as follows: based on the way the region had shaped up before Friday’s games, the Hoyas were pretty much guaranteed a playoff spot while the Indians needed a win to avoid being eliminated from playoff contention.

Friday night marked Senior Night for our Hoyas who were lead on to the field by an impassioned group of seniors who have lead this team to the point where they are right now. The leadership, drive, and focus of the seniors has been a huge factor in the success of the Hoyas’ this year. The team we are watching has not lost sight of their goal this entire season, and with each passing game that becomes more and more evident. Unlike the team’s previous two games, the Hoyas came out hot against the Indians, scoring their first touchdown in only 56 seconds on a 5-yard run by Robbie Godhigh and adding another score on a pass from Christian Burnett to Darvin Adams shortly thereafter to make score 13-0 after the first quarter. In the second quarter, Kyle Madden recovered a fumble by the Indians and returned it 31 yards for a touchdown. Later in the second, a McEachern defender recovered a fumble of his own and ran it into the enzone for McEachern’s only touchdown. The lead was extended to 27-6 before the half on an 11-yard pass for the touchdown from Burnett Godhigh. Finally, the Hoyas capped off the game with another touchdown run by Godhigh and a 17-yard run by Christian Turnipseed. The win maked another victory over a rival team which beat the Hoyas last year. Yet again, the Hoyas received a great performance from their defense which didn’t give up a touchdown to McEachern’s offense. At the same time, the offense operated at their usual efficiency while scoring 30+ points for the seventh time this year, but gave up some uncharacteristic turnovers. The offensive unit for the Hoyas proved how good they are by winning after a four turnover game; still, I am confident the Hoyas won’t make a habit of turning the ball over.

The win over McEachern officially clinched the team a spot in the playoffs and the second seed in region 5-AAAAA. The Hoyas find themselves back in the playoffs after their absence from the event last year. Because of Marietta’s loss to Woodstock, the Hoyas can no longer win the region, but that’s nothing to fret about because the second seed still puts our team in a great position going into the plaoffs. This Friday the Hoyas will travel to Campbell to take on the Spartans in their final game of the regular season. While the Hoyas have already clinched a spot in the playoffs, don’t expect them to come out flat. The team will most certainly be looking to maintain the momentum they have established up to this point, as and I have mentioned before, momentum is HUGE going into the playoffs. We will take it one game at a time, but the way the Hoyas are playing, I am anxious to see just how far they can go.
