Whitefield Shows No Mercy
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Whitefield Academy outscored Our Lady of Mercy on Friday evening, which was Senior Night for Mercy. Big player Christian Willis watched the game from the sideline due to a season-ending knee injury as Mercy fell to 4-4 on the season.
Whitefield scored on the 1st three possessions to take a 21-0 lead at the end of the 1st quarter. Whitefield built a 28-0 lead before Mercy could get on the scoreboard with Jacob Lecesne’s field goal. Mercy followed with a touchdown to cut the lead 28-10 on a William Pearl touchdown. Mercy scored again in the quarter on a Pearl to McDermott pass to slash the Whitefield lead 28-17. Whitefield answered with a 90-yard kickoff return for a touchdown to take a 34-17 lead and scored again as time ran out to go in at the half 41-17.
In the second half, Whitefield capitalized on Mercy mistakes to take a 58-17 lead. Mercy scored in the fourth quarter as D. Goemaere caught a 45-yard touchdown pass from W. Pearl. The final score was Whitefield 58-Mercy 24.
It was a tough game for the Bobcats overall. Some areas to improve may include kickoff and punt coverage as well as tightening up on defense, but there were definitely some positives. Jarrell Bankhead had 3 sacks and 11 total tackles. Tommy Kearns had 7 total tackles and 1 fumble recovery. Amir Mustafaa had 6 total tackles and 1 sack and Will Simmons had 11 defensive tackles.
The next two weeks for Mercy are against two good opponents. Let’s hope the team is up for the challenge and show Mercy fans that the future is bright. Go Bobcats!!!
