Mercy Comeback Stuns Mt. Pisgah

Our Lady of Mercy trailed Mt. Pisgah for 45 minutes and 55 seconds but took a 63-62 lead with 2:05 left in the game.

The game opened with F.Hall of Mt. Pisgah running a 99yd-kickoff return for a touchdown and the extra point gave Mt. Pisgah a 7-0 lead.

C. Willis of Mercy answered with a 35 yd run for an apparent touchdown but it was called back due to a clipping penalty.

After an interception by Mt. Pisgah, F.Hall broke a long 80yd run for Mt. Pisgah to give them a 14-0 lead. William Pearl answered for Mercy with a 45 yd touchdown run and J.Lescene’s extra point cut the lead 14-7.

Mercy surprised Mt. Pisgah with an onside kick and recovered it. Mercy fumbled on 3rd down and Mt. Pisgah took over and scored on a 55yd touchdown pass at the 4:53 mark of the 1st quarter to make the score Mt. Pisgah 21 Mercy 7. Mercy was unable to move the ball and F.Hall scored on a 80yd touchdown run for Mt. Pisgah to take a 28-7 lead at the 3:00 minute mark of the 1st quarter.

Our Lady of Mercy answered with a68 yd Pearl to Bankhead pass to cut the Mt. Pisgah lead 28-14 at the 157 mark. The score held for the quarter. Usually this is enough scoring for a game. The fans were about to be treated to a high scoring game.

The 2nd quarter started with C.Willis scampering for a 46yd. Mercy touchdown at the 9:50 mark J. Lescene’s extra point cut the Mt. Pisgah lead 28-21.

On Mt. Pisgah’s next possession, they scored on a touchdown pass at the 7:55 mark to take a 35-21 lead. Mt. Pisgah scored again at the 5:05 mark to take a 42-21 lead. Things looked blank for Mercy but C. Willis scored on a 23 yd. runt to make the score 42-28, Mt. Pisgah was not done as they scored on a 60yd play with 1:30 left in the half.

Pearl answered with a pass to D. McDermott for a touchdown at the 30-second mark of the second quarter to give the fans a half of football that they will never forget.

The half time score was Mt. Pisgah 49- Mercy 35.

Mercy opened the second half by throwing an interception. Mt. Pisgah answered with a touchdown to take a 56-35 lead with C. Willis injured on the Mercy sideline, D. McDermott answered the call with a 9 yd touchdown to bring Mercy closer 56-42 at the 2:26 mark of the 3rd quarter. The quarter ended with the score Mt. Pisgah 56- Mercy 42.

Mercy held Mt. Pisgah to start the 4th quarter and Gagliano ran for a 39yd touchdown to cut the lead 56-49. The Mt. Pisgah crowd was getting a little anxious to see Mercy within 7 points.

Mercy held Mt. Pisgah again and D. McDermott ran 44 yds. for a touchdown and Lescene’s extra point tied the game 56-56.

Both teams stalled on their next possessions. G. hall burned Mercy for the last time on a 75 yd. touchdown run to give Mt. Pisgah the lead. After a procedure penalty, the extra point was missed.

With 5:14 left in the game, Mercy felt good. Pearl drove Mercy down the field and scored. Jacob Lescene was automatic and Mercy took its first lead.

Mt. Pisgah moved the ball but turned it over on downs. Mercy took a knee to run out the clock.

Mercy is now 4-3. Hopefully, C. Willis can recover from his knee injury. Go Bobcats!!!
