Hoyas continue to sweep through region opponents with ease
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
The last time I addressed the Hoya faithful on this forum, the number four state ranked Harrison football team was 5-1 and riding the momentum of a three game winning streak. Since then, two more region foes have fallen victim to the mighty Hoyas, who are arguably the hottest team in the region right now. With these two wins, the team extended the aforementioned winning streak to five games and is now 7-1, maintaining their status as the fourth ranked team in Georgia’s class 5-AAAAA.
Last Friday, the Hoyas continued their trend of lopsided victories over opponents with a win over South Cobb. Once again, the team was able to post an incredibly high point total on the scoreboard while allowing the other team to score minimal points. The Hoyas came out relatively slow against South Cobb, and after the Eagles marched down the field with an effective running game on their first possession, the Hoyas found themselves down 0-3 when South Cobb’s kicker knocked a field goal through the uprights. However, with that said, the one good drive was about all the success the South Cobb offense would have the rest of the night. The Eagles gave our team a safety on a bad snap to their punter which went out of the back of the endzone. After the safety, the Hoyas went on a roll and couldn’t be stopped. Christian Burnett connected with Darvin Adams on two touchdowns while Robbie Godhigh erupted for 208 yards on the ground and scored 3 more touchdowns to add to his previous total of 9 touchdowns on the year. The finishing touch for the game occured when Christian Turnipseed intercepted a pass on the Hoyas own 20-yard line and took the ball 80-yards to the other end of the field for one final touchdown, making the final score 50-11 in the Hoyas’ favor.
Following their victory over South Cobb, the Hoyas began to prepare for their much awaited matchup with heated rival Kennesaw Mountain, who somehow pulled off an overtime victory over our Hoyas last year. This year’s game would prove to be a MUCH different story. Coming in to the game the, the Hoyas knew that they were a better team than the Mustangs, but they also knew that they would be facing a big, physical team that, no matter what the circumstances were, would come out pumped up and ready to play because of the fact that they were playing Harrison. Many Mustangs were mistaken in believing that they were coming up against a team that was very similar to the team they beat last year. Much to the dismay of our rivals down the road, they were proven wrong about that belief when they experienced, for lack of a better term, ” a complete obliteration” at the hands of our Hoyas. Similar to the South Cobb game, the Hoyas came out a little slow in this one, partly due to the Mustang defense which came out highly energized. At one point, the game was tied 3-3 after a field goal a piece by each team. However, just before halftime Robbie Godhigh punched one in for one of his two touchdowns, putting the Hoyas up 10-3 at the half. After the half, the Hoyas wore the Mustangs down, and what was once a close game turned into a blowout. As is the case in every game, the victory came as a result of a total team effort between the offense, defense and special teams. Burnett connected with Darvin Adams (who tore apart the Mustang secondary) for 5 completions, 157 yards, and one touchdown. Godhigh, as mentioned above, ran in for two touchdowns, and the versatile Jamal Austin scored on an interception that he returned 50+ yards for the touchdown. The stifling Hoya defense once again held their opponents to a dismal offensive performance and didn’t even allow a touchdown.
Don’t let anyone fool you, this Hoya football team, is a VERY good team. They are two wins away from finishing the season 9-1. After a bye this Friday, the Hoyas will take on McEachern at home and Campbell away to close out season. If everything goes accordingly, and I have no doubt that it will, the Hoyas will finish the season 9-1 and find themselves in prime position for a shot at the State Championship. We are witnessing, in my opinion, the best team at Harrison since 2002. And this Hoya team in particular is living proof that heart, teamwork, hard work, and dedication to the same goal can take a team a long way.
