Reign of the Spartans Ends
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Going into Friday’s game against the Greater Atlanta Christian Spartans, the Lovett Lions had never defeated GAC. Never in the Lion’s history. Needless to say, it meant a lot for the Lions to triumph in the game on Saturday, charging to a 23-17 victory. As a result, the Lions now stand undefeated in the region, tied with Buford for the region lead. This win puts in the Lion’s in position to finish the regular season even better than they did in last year’s memorable season.
During the game, the Lions played near flawless football. Controlling the clock, having the ball for 28 minutes of the game, Lovett was able to keep the high powered GAC offense in check. Also, the Lions didn’t turn the ball over the whole game, while GAC threw two interceptions. Capitalizing on these opportunities, Lovett was able to take the lead late in the second quarter, and the Lions didn’t relinquish the lead for the rest of the game. While Robinson played an amazing game for the Spartans, creating over 150 yards of total offense, the Spartans came up short. The Lions, with touchdowns from Andre Hicks and Jonathan Carkhuff, as well as three field goals from Jack Hall, were able to match each of GAC’s attempts to charge ahead.
Coming off this great victory the Lion’s look ahead to Decatur, their next opponent. They will play the Bulldogs at home this coming Friday. Since it is homecoming week, there is no doubt that the Lions will be fired up to play when the game arrives later this week.
In addition, Lovett’s JV team defeated GAC’s JV team on Thursday last week. The Lions cruised to a 21-12 victory. While they gave up an early lead, allowing the Spartans to come close, they quickly charged ahead again with two big plays. Adrian Rivers intercepted a pass and returned it for a touchdown. Even though it was called back the pick gave the Lions great field position. Also, Jamal Releford returned a kickoff for a touchdown. Though this play was called back for an illegal block, the Lions gained momentum and great field position. The 3-0 JV Lions now look forward to their game at Riverwood this week.
