Harrison still on a roll, gathering momentum as playoffs approach
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
The Harrison Football Hoyas are continuing to prove why they are among the best teams in the state of Georgia. The team extended their winning streak to three consecutive games with wins coming over Woodstock, Marietta, and finally, the lowly Murray County in our Homecoming game. Each of these victories turned out to be extremely lopsided, in our favor of course. After their Week 3 loss against rival North Cobb, the Hoyas are seemingly getting better and better with each game that passes. Before this week, the Hoyas were hovering around the sixth and seventh spots in the GHSA 5-AAAAA polls, but after a 45-18 victory over Marietta (who was 4-0 at the time) and a 54-0 demolition of Murray County, the team improved their record to 5-1 and vaulted to Number 4 in the state just behind Stephenson, North Cobb, and North Gwinnett, respectively. With only four games remaining in the regular season, the Hoyas are playing some their best football yet, and what’s scary is the fact that there is still room for improvement. What does this mean? It means that we are witnessing a team who is currently ranked fourth in the state of Georgia, but is still capable of taking it to a whole new level of greatness. If the Hoyas continue on their current trend of improving each game, I suggest that the rest of Georgia’s Class 5-AAAAA take heed of an extremely dangerous Hoya Football team come playoff time. I spoke with several of the team’s players over the course of the past week about the team’s recent success, and I immediately noticed the similarities in the reasons they each gave for why the team is doing so well. Even though the Hoyas are an extremely talented football team, the word talent didn’t even find its way into any of the conversations. Every player mentioned the same things over and over: heart, dedication to the same vision, camaraderie, and leadership. You simply can’t ask for much more out of a team. And in addition to that which is listed above, it certainly helps when you have a squad that is performing on both sides of the ball. The Hoyas continue to stifle opponents with their defense, and with the help of the offensive line, the offense has found an efficient and effective balance of the run and pass game with Christian Burnett, Robbie Godhigh, Jamal Austin, Alphonso Griffin, and Darvin Adams. Even the special teams unit has a significant impact on each game.
This Friday at Hoya Stadium, the Hoyas will take on a South Cobb Eagles team which is not nearly as talented as their teams from previous years, but has still found ways to give some of Cobb’s best teams a run for their money. I have said this before about other opponents, but to reiterate a key point, if the Hoyas play like they have been, the Eagles won’t stand a chance. We’ll take the season one game at a time, but after South Cobb the Hoyas will travel to Kennesaw Mountain to play the much hated Mustangs who somehow beat Harrison in an overtime thriller last year. This should be a great game as our guys will be out for revenge, and as always, the Mustangs will play us like they are playing in the Super Bowl, seeing as they never have much else to look forward to in the way of playoffs. Finally, the KMHS game will be followed by a bye week, and games against McEachern and Campbell to round out the season.
The road to a 9-1 regular season finish won’t be a walk in the park, but the Hoyas are MORE than capable of completing the task at hand. After all, in the words of our very own Brandon Lane. “I promise you guys we won’t lose another game.” I don’t know about all of you, but I believe him.

It’s know wonder Cobb Country is becoming a breeding ground for college recruiters in Division l football when you watch these boys play on Friday nights. Harrison plays with Pride, Rescept, and Hard Work. They push themselves to the limit as well as lifting each other up…it takes awhole team of players to win not just one player. As this season continutes in our quest each player has to continue to execute their job assigment. The Offensive is getting into a nice rhythm while our Defensive is a fierce force that I know has the other High School Coaches nervous evertime their Quarterback takes a snap. May the Hoyas go far…they are a GREAT bunch of kids…the deserve it!
