4-1
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Milton achieved something Friday night that they have not done in three years, win four games. The Milton Eagles are 4-1 before the bye week and looked great in their win beating Lassiter 38-21. The offense scored a touchdown on the first possession of the game and was consistent the rest of the night. Most of the offensive production came from the running game that was wide open all night resulting from a solid game from the o-line. Andrew Matthieson only threw the ball twice and completed both passes for big conversions early in the game.
The defense had another big game friday night holding the Trojans to 14 points for most of the game. Alex Accurso broke open the game with two interceptions returning them both for touchdowns. His returns took pressure off of the offense to put up all of the points and really took Lassiter out of the game. The rest of the defense did great in shutting down the run and a quality Lassiter passing game. Milton heads into the bye week with confidence having a three game winning streak. This week they will be able to rest up before they play in their first region game away against Northview.

McIntosh vs. Starr’s Mill this Friday
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
This Friday McIntosh High School plays Starr’s Mill in a game possibly more anticipated than homecoming. The Chiefs will be heading to Starr’s Mill to play against them in their 2007 homecoming. In past years, McIntosh has been considered far inferior to the all-powerful Panthers, but this year the two teams are pretty evenly matched.
McIntosh holds a 1-3 record and Starr’s Mill holds a 2-3 record. Last week Starr’s Mill lost to Banneker 27-40, a team they were supposed to win against. The week before the Chiefs also played and lost to Banneker 0-20. These records give the faithful McIntosh hope that we can win against Starr’s Mill.
Last year, McIntosh lost 0-21 against Starr’s Mill on October 6th, one day after they are scheduled to play them again this year. Hopefully this year the outcome will be different, but the only way to find out is to wait in see. All that we can be certain of is that the McIntosh fans will show up at Starr’s Mill just as spirited as if it was our homecoming.
Go Chiefs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Simply Amazing
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Those were the first two words that popped into my head Friday night around 10 o’clock. It was a night in which many crazy things were happening. The Peachtree Ridge stands looked like a sea of black. I must say, the Blackout was very successful. I dont want to seem like i am bragging or anything, but my friend Adam and I planned the Blackout last week and honestly i wasnt sure about the response. But to see that many people wearing black really made me happy. I mean it wasnt only students. Many parents dawned black clothing. I felt very accomplised. Anyways back to the game. I don’t think that anybody was expecting Peachtree Ridge (4-1) to do what they did to Norcross (4-1) Friday night. The final score was 26-14 but that makes it look closer than it really was.
The Lions had to burn their first timeout before they could even snap the ball. I began to get worried. After that though, they got off to a quick start, from a 43-yard Greg Johnson FG. After stopping Norcross on their first drive Peachtree Ridge marched the ball down the field until Ronnie Smith picked up a 14-yard TD making it 10-0 Lions. That 10-point lead didn’t last long as Alex Napper took the ensuing kickoff 99 yards to the house for the Blue Devils. The teams then swapped possessions with turnovers and the Lions then got another FG. The biggest drive on the night came in the 2nd quarter when Asher Clark led the Lions down the field for nearly seven minutes. Clark ended the drive on a 10-yards TD run. He finished the night 11 of 18 passing for 159 yards and 83 yards on 18 carries. The Lions went for a fake FG, but the pass was incomplete making it 19-7 at halftime.
Norcross got the ball to begin the 2nd half and fumbled on the first play. Brandon Davis scored 3 plays later on a 13-yard TD run. In the third quarter Norcross finally got their offense to be somewhat productive. Brice Butler got his only two catches on the night in the same drive and Norcross eventually scored on a 1-yard TD run by Thinh Ho. And that was all that Norcross could manage anymore. The 4th quarter was basically highlighted by Peachtree Ridge running and punting and Norcross giving us turnovers.
The Lions simply dominated the game; there is nothing more to it. The Lions defense really stepped it up in such a big game. Here is an astonishing stat for you: In the first half, the Lions had 214 yards of total offense compared to Norcross’ 12 yards. Now, it comes to down to the North Gwinnett-Peachtree Ridge game to determine the Region 7AAAAA Championship. (That is of course unless some crazy upsets occur.) Now I guess Norcross is still in the running but they will have to get some help. Two weeks from now will be one crazy matchup in Suwanee. My next question is who is #1? Your guess is as good as mine. GO LIONS!

Blackout on Norcross
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
A few of my friends at the game (on the Peachtree Ridge side) told me that they have been dreading the Norcross-Peachtree Ridge game for weeks now. I mean, everyone knew it was going to be THE game of the season; it was a showdown of two very distinguished 7AAAAA teams! Peachtree Ridge was named co-state champions last year (along with Roswell), but they were about the face off with the team who was currently named No. 1 in the state after Roswell’s loss last week. Fans of both schools were very ecstatic about this game; because both schools both represent the color blue, everyone decided that Devils would wear white (the whiteout team) and the Lions would wear all black (the blackout team). With the anticipation at great heights for this game, everyone hoped for the best, and that the best team would came out victorious. However when the game ended, both teams had learned a lot about themselves; the Blue Devils suffered their first loss of the season at 14-26.
I don’t about anyone else, but I didn’t see such a bad loss coming our way. We were 4-0, and the Lions were 3-1, beaten by the Grayson Rams (which we had destroyed a few weeks back). Yes, the Lions are great team, and they were deemed champions last year. This game will hopefully be a wakeup call on the Blue Devils.
Right at the start, the Lions hit the ground running with a three-point score. Before we knew it, the Lions had us 10-0. We, however, quickly answered with Alex Napper’s 99-yard kickoff, reminding the Lions that we were number one. The Lions, who were determined to win, picked up the pace after our touchdown. Most of the action took place in the second and third quarter, with the score not moving much at 14-26 near the end. With just a few minutes on the clock, time was not on our side; we realized we had lost even before the game had ended.
“They played great and we didn’t play well, and when you don’t give your quarterback time to throw you’re not going to get it to your big guys,” said Norcross coach Keith Maloof.
“We were up for the challenge,” Lions coach Bill Ballard said. “We knew it was going to be a big challenge tonight because they were ranked No. 1 and they’re a great team. They’ll rebound from this, I’m sure.”
But other teams, beware, after the lions tore down our title as number 1 in the 7AAAAA rank, we learned a lot. This will most likely be our first and last loss. After all, we are still one of the highest ranked teams out there. We WILL make it to the playoffs this year. As said in the movie Batman Begins: “Why do we fall? So we can learn how to pick ourselves up.” Never give up on your team, and that WE BELIEVE THAT WE WILL WIN THE REST OF THE GAMES THIS SEASON!
Fact Sheet:
PEACHTREE RIDGE 26, NORCROSS 14
Norcross 7 0 7 0 — 14
Peachtree Ridge 10 9 7 0 — 26

Devils ‘Cutt Down (HHS 45, MHS 18)
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
After winning their first 4 games against teams who were a collective 5-10, Marietta got their first real test at Northcutt against a Harrison team that had a really impressive win at Lowndes earlier, and also played my # 2 team in the state North Cobb. Marietta went out appearing ready to play and drove down the field before stalling out at the 12-yard line. Chase Morgan was just short on the kick, that gave Harrison momentum that they would never relinquish. They scored three consecutive touchdowns to go up 21-0. Try as we might we just couldnt stop the offensive balance Harrison showed through Christian Burnett, Darvin Adams, and Robbie Godhigh. Stanley Jennings and Jeremy Hill had great games; Stanley going 15-21 for 259 yards and 2 touchdowns and Jeremy grabbing two interceptions. Harrison exposed Marietta in many ways, but its not the end of the season… I still see Marietta as the third best team in the region. However, I believe that Harrison and North Cobb are two of the best teams in the state. Playoffs are still a strong possibility and we are a good football team, unfortunately, we are in a region with two great ones. Also, can anyone give us an update on Kelsey Turner’s ankle? I was impressed with the heart that Greg Franklin ran with and he excites me regarding our future, but Kelsey Turner is a huge part of this football team. I was glad to see the crossing patterns we employed in the passing game as opposed to throwing a majority of go routes (where the receiver runs straight down the field.) I am not discouraged, but I expect to see them rebound at McEachern next week.

Roswell v. Wheeler
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Hey guys, its Chris Orf again. Roswell v. Wheeler proved to be, from a coaches standpoint the best game we played so far. We had a lot f distractions this week, but the hornets pulled through and executed the game plan to the best it could be done! We have a bye week next week, so we will start focusing on Chattahoochee REALLY soon.
There were many stand out players, but I think Eric Tall had a great game, he made some great tackles, but couldn’t come up with two picks, none the less he played well. We put Lavelle in at running back on 3rd and 20+ and he just powered his way through the defense, looks like we may have a new back in the rotation. Tyler Lippencott did good on the line, leading the rest of the line to a great game.
Next two weeks, the hornets need to put aside the distractions, and we can come away with a very important win.
GO HORNETS!!!!

Hoyas Follow Tough Loss With Impressive Victory
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
The Harrison Hoya football team improved their record to 3-1 after defeating the Woodstock Wolverines by a final score of 38-20 this past Friday night. After losing a tough one against region rival North Cobb two Fridays ago in game that was arguably botched by the referees, the Hoyas came out with a fire lit under them. Against Woodstock, the Hoyas created enough distance between themselves and their opponent to ensure that the refs would have no part in deciding the outcome of the game. In the first quarter, running back Alphonso Griffin bursted outside on a handoff from Chistian Burnett, hurdling would-be tacklers and showing off his speed on the way to a 46 yard touchdown run. Unfortunately however, Griffin’s touchdown was followed by a missed extra point (another thing that proved detrimental against North Cobb), the team’s third in two weeks. On the Hoyas’ second possession of the game, they drove down the field with an effective combination of passes from Burnett to Darvin Adams and a string of runs from our three backs Griffin, Godhigh, and Austin, only to be stopped at the goaline by a (at the time) stubborn Woodstock defense. After the goaline hold by Woodstock, the Hoyas added three points on a field goal from Eric Cobleigh. Later, in the second quarter, the Hoyas found themselves in the red zone once more after a 64-yard run by Robbie Godhigh who burst through the line and was tackled by a Woodstock defender only 3 yards outside of the endzone. The drive was capped on a touchdown by Godhigh who lowered his head and found the end zone only a play after his long run. Touchdowns came later in the game on a long pass from Burnett to Adams, a end-around to Jamal Austin for a 30-yard touchdown, and finally, another touchdown run by Alphonso Griffin.
There is no doubt that the Hoyas are playing great football right now. They have outscored their opponents 103-33. The offense is hitting on all cylinders with a great running game from three backs, each of whom bring something different and equally great to the table, and an efficient passing game, mainly between quarterback Burnett and Adams. The offensive line is opening holes for the running and backs and doing a more than awesome job of protecting Burnett. And finally, as evidenced by the stat above, the defense is playing phenomenal and keeping our opponents in check both in the running and passing games. In my own opinion, I don’t see many weaknesses in our Hoyas with exception of the kicking game, which can be fixed, but must be done so sooner rather than later. We certainly can’t afford to miss extra points at crucial parts of the game in close, tight games (like against North Cobb). However, with that said, I have full confidence in each player on the team and I also have no doubt that the coaching staff and the players will work to fix any chinks in the team’s armor, no matter how few they may be.
This Friday, our Hoyas will take on another region rival in the Marietta Blue Devils at old Marietta’s Northcutt Stadium. Last year at Hoya Stadium, our guys beat the Devils by a score of 21-14, and although we only beat them by seven points, the final score really wasn’t indicative of just how one-sided the game was in our favor. This year’s Marietta team is currently 4-0 and has apparently improved from last year’s team which lead Marietta to a losing season, its first in a long time. Nevertheless, from what I have heard, if our Hoyas play like we have been playing, we should come out on top in decisive fashion. For all you superstitious people out there, I knocked on wood as I typed that so as to avoid any kind of “jinx.” But on a more serious note, based on everything I have seen, read, and heard, our team from Harrison is better than Marietta in nearly every aspect of the game. The keys for us in this game will be consistency and defense. If we can play like we have been, we should come out on top. Kickoff time for the game is at 7:30 P.M. at Northcutt, but I suggest getting there on the early side as this is a big game and an even bigger rivalry. Everyone come out and support the fellas on their way to a second straight victory over the far inferior Blue Devils.

A Game For The Ages…hopefully
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Friday night, one of the biggest games in the state will be taking place in our house. The Lions Den. And it is sure to be packed by kickoff. The Norcross Blue Devils are undefeated and ranked #1 in the state. Quite frankly, nobody has really come close to beating them all year. Peachtree Ridge will be going into the game as an under dog. But we like it that way. Heck, half of the playoffs last year, we were under dogs. Look where that got us.
Fans at the game, will get to see one of the most anticipated matchups all season. It is the Norcross WR’s vs the Peachtree Ridge DB’s. The Blue Devils have two star Wide Receivers in the 5th ranked receiver in the nation #12 Brice Butler (USC signee) and #14 Devonta Bolton (Bama Signee). That is not all that the Devils have at WR either. Be on the look out for #21 Alex Napper, when you arent watching Butler or Bolton. The Peachtree Ridge Secondary is possibly the best in the state. Lead by #8 Derrick Bryant (LSU signee) and #9 Brandon Sanders (Ole Miss signee). The Lions DB’s already have a few interceptions on the year and have not let one team pass for over 100 yards all season. #12 Kavoskee Simpson and #4 Connor Norman have also played very well so far this year. Especially, Norman who has been in the game for the suspended Cameron Demps (VT Signee). It is unclear as to whether Demps will play on Friday.
Asher Clark will be the starting QB for the Lions and i believe he is a key to the game. Asher can be a very good quarterback as long as he has protection from his linemen. The O-Line which has been plagued by injuries is finally coming together as a unit and playing solid. I believe if they have a good night and give Clark time to throw then it could be a long night for the Devils Secondary. Also the Lions offense features a Triple Threat in the backfield with RB #3 Brandon Davis (UCF Signee), #38 Antonio Hayes, and #32 Ronnie Smith.
Norcross has two very talented QBs in Nick Sorel and Charles King. Their running game is very overlooked because of the skill at WR, but just be aware that they have talent in the backfield as well.
Overall i think it is going to be a great game, which will come down to the very end. Norcross is one of the only teams in the region that the Lions have yet to beat and we think this could be the year. One more thing id like to point out. Last year, Peachtree Ridge was in a similar situation. A vast underdog to the #1 ranked Blue Devils. But the Lions came out and shocked the state as they upset the Devils and took home the Region 7 Basketball Championship. It could happen again…only this time on the football field. My prediction is a Lions win 21-18 coming down to a Greg Johnson FG near the end. GO LIONS!

Defending the Title…
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Hello everyone. I’m Logan McElroy, the Hall Monitor blogger for Peachtree Ridge this year. This is my first article so just bear with me. I am going to recap the frist few games of our young season.
Last year the Lions won a share of the AAAAA State Championship. That means this expectations for this year’s squad are still extremely high. There have been many changes since last year, including our new head coach, Bill Ballard. Coach Ballard came to Peachtree Ridge from Tucker. His career record as a head coach is 53-8 coming into the season. Peachtree Ridge also graduated many seniors from the State Championship squad including DT Cameron Heyward (Ohio State), K Drew Butler (UGA), WR Sidney Haynes (UCF), and QB Zack Graham (Ole Miss).
The Lions kicked off the regular season on August 31 at home against the Shiloh Generals. The Lions won the game 28-0, but in my opinion played a little flat. Though the defense was stout. Shiloh managed only 61 yards of total offense including only 3 passing yards. Junior running back Ronnie Smith also had a phenomminal game, rushing for 55 yards on 7 carries with 3 TD’s. Brandon Davis ran for 100 yards on 14 carries and manage a TD as well.
In Week 2, the Lions squared off against the Grayson Rams. The Rams were a vastly underrated team, but they sure did not play that way. I knew this game was going to be tough from the beginning. Even though the Lions jumped out early, the Rams just ran the ball down our throats all night long. Ian Pemberton is possibly the smallest RB i have ever seen, but boy is he quick. Grayson is very blessed to have him. In the end, Grayson ended up upsetting the defending State Champions 17-14. Turnovers and penalties were detrimental to the Lions.
Week 3 featured the Lions facing cross town rival Collins Hill. The last matchup between these two teams was a nail biter but Collins Hill came out on top. This year, the Lions looked for revenge. Collins Hill came into the game 0-2 and was trying to avoid and 0-3 start. But it was just not meant to be. The Lions came out fighting after the loss to Grayson. The final score was 21-0 but the game really was not all that close. The Lions dominated most of the game, but they still made some stupid mistakes.
Last week, we traveled to South Forsyth to play the 1-2 War Eagles. This was the best game the Lions had played all season. The defense looked solid again as they have most of the season. The Offensive Line really came together and gave QB Asher Clark plenty of time in the pocket. The O-Line has been plagued by some early season-ending injuries to Jesse Garcia and Trevor McBurnett. Overall, the team looked great and the final score was 28-3.
So the Lions have gotten off to a pretty good start to the 2007 campaign. Check back soon for my Peachtree Ridge-Norcross Preview.

West Forsyth is now 4-0
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Needless to say, the West Forsyth Junior Varsity team is really building up the school’s reputation between the incredible turnouts and the glorious victories that they have won. Last Friday night’s game was no exception when the Wolverines destroyed Duluth with a final score of 39-21. Not only did the Wolverines show their enthusiasm by playing as hard and as long as they could, but the Duluth players showed their anger by receiving FIVE Personal Fouls.
The first quarter started off with Duluth catching the kickoff at the nineteen yard line and slowly making their way downfield but not getting even remotely close enough for a touchdown. Finally, they had to punt the ball away and West gained possession. A few short minutes later Lance Baker made a very nice pass to Andy Cameron who ran for the first touchdown of the game halfway into the first quarter. Shortly after that, Ethan Shirley ran in two extra points, bringing the score up to 8-0. The game continued and after Duluth had to punt the ball away again West gained control at the thirty-four yard line. Shortly after that Duluth got its first of five personal fouls, moving the Wolverines down to the twenty-four yard line. The very next play, Duluth got its second of five personal fouls, putting the Wolverines at the twelve yard line. Following that Duluth recovered a fumble at the twenty-eight yard line before heading downfield to the forty-four yard line on the next play before he was finally tackled by Preston Schultz. A few more plays later and Duluth had to punt the ball away again so that West gained possession at the twenty yard line. Finally the first quarter ended and gave way to the second.
Second quarter started with West in possession at the thirty-five yard line. Lance Baker made an incredible pass to Jacob Sloan who ran forty-five yards downfield to the 20 yard line. Somehow or another one of the referees decided to flag the play but after a minute or two of discussion the flag was revoked and the game continued at the twenty yard line. Next, Duluth got its third Personal Foul and ended up with West in possession at the seven yard line. Cam Rosenfield made the next touchdown for the Wolverines only a minute and a half into the second quarter after having been set up so well by Jacob Sloan and Duluth’s Personal Foul. David Camp earned the Wolverines an extra point by kicking the ball through the uprights. Ben Emert recovered a fumble a few plays later and ran it to the seven yard line where he set up the next touchdown, made by Arsalan Khan. Once again David Camp earned the team an extra point with another beautiful kick through the uprights. By now the score is up to 22-0 not even halfway through the game and anyone could tell that the Duluth team was not happy about it. This became thoroughly apparent when someone on the Duluth team pushed a West player who pushed back, causing the Duluth player to take a swing, earning them their fourth glorious Personal Foul of the night. I left for the concession stand at a minute until halftime, hoping I could return by halftime, but the line was ridiculously long.
When I returned the halftime show was halfway done and when it was over I left again to hang out with a few friends of mine who were in the band. When I came back to the game during the third quarter apparently someone had made a touchdown, bringing the score up to twenty-nine. This was followed by a field goal, although I did not see who kicked it. By now the game was becoming fairly boring, with Duluth slowing down more and more and West pulling so far ahead that whenever someone made a good play there was no more jumping up and down, but a mere high five. This was also reflected in my notes, considering that they haven’t got any information in them that I need, like the numbers of players. Somehow or another West pushed Duluth so far back that they recovered a fumble in their end zone, which counted as a touchdown. This was followed by another extra point, bringing the score up to 39-0. Finally the third quarter ended and the fourth quarter began.
Fourth quarter began with West’s second string players heading out onto the field. About two minutes into the final quarter Duluth got its first touchdown of the night, plus an extra point, bringing the score up to a very close 39-7. In case the Italics weren’t enough, that last comment was sarcasm. Not surprisingly, Duluth got another Personal Foul, bringing their total up to five. After that, Duluth broke through the West defenses and made a very scary eighty-eight yard run only to be stopped by Garret Morin at the five yard line. Shortly after, Duluth did get another touchdown, but at least they didn’t have the glory of making a ninety-three yard touchdown, like they would have if Garret Morin hadn’t stepped in. They got an extra point along with it, bringing the score up to 39-14 with three minutes left in the game. The West fans were starting to get worried (again, sarcasm). Another minute later Duluth got another touchdown and another extra point bringing the score up to a less shameful 39-21. Finally the slaughter of Duluth ended and West had one more victory under its belt, leaving the record at 4-0. Go Wolverines!

Keep Faith Wildcats
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Through the first four games of the season, the Wildcats have posted a 2-2 record. It may seem mediocre, but in all actuality, they are in prime position to make a move. A .500 record is not reflective of the capability nor the effort in which these kids are playing with. Their losses have come against Newnan, a team in a higher class than them, and Fayette County, an undefeated team. Newnan has also beaten two other teams in their same class by a combined score of 87-0. Fayette County has caught lightning in a bottle and endured an epic struggle on their own field from the Wildcats. Creekside, who was previously undefeated and ranked #6 in the AAAA region, left Whitewater stadium with shrugging shoulders and confused looks on their faces. Sandy Creek who defeated the Wildcats last season did not fair as well, losing 10-7 to the Wildcats. Of the losses, both were tight games against two outstanding programs in the Metro Atlanta area. The wins were just as tight as the losses, but both came against worthy opponents and showed the Wildcats have enough heart to keep fighting even in the toughest of circumstances. So to those of you who are looking down upon the Wildcats, you won’t be looking down for very long, because these kids are ready to make some noise.

KMHS vs Etowah
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Kennesaw Mountain’s annual club night was this past Friday September 21 as the Mustangs took on the Etowah Eagles. It seems that the Mustangs keep attempting to make comebacks in the final seconds of the game… and have mastered throwing interceptions while doing so. This among other things had led to the Mustangs slightly worse than average record. And in other Mustang news our famous Kilt Squad is now in the market for a new “K”…. and his first appearance will be this Friday at the Kennesaw Mountain @ North Cobb game.

Could Towns County Handle the Mercy Bobcats?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
The mighty Bobcats fought a good game against Towns County on Friday, September 21st. The final score was 35-26, Our Lady of Mercy. Go Bobcats!!! Despite the much wanted victory, it was a rough night for the Bobcats as they faced some racial tension. This was highly uncalled for, but the fellow Bobcats were ready to defend their teammates.
Please let me know what you think about this… I want to hear from you!!!

Softball Wins Big Game Against Pace
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Last Wednesday the Lovett softball team squared up against regional rival, Pace Academy. In a close game, runs by Daly Hite and Morgan Mixon gave the Lions a 2-1 victory. With this victory the Lions move to 13-4 on the season (6-1 in the region), surpassing their win total from last season already. Furthermore, this puts the Lions in 4th place in the region, putting them in position to make the state playoffs.
Next week the Lions have three important region games: Cross Keys, GAC, and Creekview. Currently Creekview sits just behind the Lions in the standings, so these three games are extremely important. With wins in two out of the three the Lions could likely solidify a the fourth position in the region. The Lions are looking strong and have a good chance at making the state playoffs this year.

Volleyball Defeats Westminster in Rivalry Game
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
The Lovett-Westminster rivalry extends further than just football. This rivalry is just as intense in all sports in which these teams meet. However, for years Westminster has dominated this rivalry game in volleyball. So Lovett’s victory over the Wildcats on Thursday was monumental. In a close match the Lions charged to victory, winning 25-23 in the 3rd period. This win increases the Lions’ record to 18-5 on the season. It looks as if the team will be competitive late into the season once again.

Lions Proceed to 2-0 in Region Play
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
The Lions entered Friday’s game coming off of two week’s rest. While some may expect rusty play in the early quarters, the Lions came out sharp, jumping ahead to a two touchdown lead in the first 10 minutes. Sophomore quarterback Jonathan Carkhuff lead the charge, completing 10 of his first 11 passes. His most popular target was Max Williams, who hauled in 4 passes for 85 yards in the game. The Lions continued this tremendous offensive output through the second quarter, ending the first half with a 34-7 lead.
Avondale gained some momentum late in the first half and early in the second half with a 76 yard touchdown reception and 78 yard interception return by Greg Boyd, but it wasn’t enough. The game ended in a 55-13 victory for the Lions. The Lions have another important region game next week against Wesleyan.
Earlier this past week, on Thursday, the Lovett JV Football team played a great game as well. They shut out the St. Pius team, and shot off to a 13-0 victory. Their next game is against region rivals GAC next week.

Milton Moves to 3-1
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

In a complete team effort, Milton defeated Pope last night 21-0. The offense was consistent, the defense was dominant, and the special teams did their job this week. The offense came into the game believing they could pound the ball all night into Pope’s defense and succeeded in doing so. The O-line and lead blocking from Mike Johnson gave Toney Williams and Lance Martin big holes to run through throughout the game. Andrew Matteison managed the game well at quarterback and had some solid passes on crucial 3rd down situations.
The defense had another great game shutting out Pope to a goose egg. Pope had no luck running the ball against Milton and had to go to the air early. Parker Philpot had two interceptions and was a big contributor in shutting down the passing game. Andrew Quinland blocked a punt late in the game, and Tommy Stahalek scooped it for the score. This team seems to be getting better every week on each side of the ball.
Roswell surprisingly lost to Walton last night 13-10 I believe, which puts them at 3-1. We play at Lassiter next week on a two game winning streak, and it will be a good test for us to see how we match up against some of the better teams in our region. View image

Warriors are on a winning streak
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Last night the Warriors won their forth game in a row, making them undefeated. The game was played against the McEachern Indians and the score was 35-9. After last friday’s game against Harrison, which was the first time we beat them in over 10 years, 13-12, North Cobb moved to seventh in the state, and also was chosen to be 11 alive’s team of the week. It looks like the Warriors have came from being last years team that no one thought would make the play-offs to a high-ranking undefeated team. Keep it up Warriors, you’re doing well.

N. Forsyth heads South (plus a Public Service Announcement)
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Prior to N. Forsyth’s game against us, they hadn’t won a game yet. After facing us, that fact hadn’t changed. This game was our first slaughter of the season, beating the N. Forsyth team 48-0!
Okay, anyway, here’s a quick P.S.A.:
So uh, on a personal note so far, I have had some fun writing these articles. GO NORCROSS! I apologize for not making great coverage on this week’s game (this article was actually published later than the date says). You see, I go to every varsity game because I am in the marching band, and plus I love supporting the Blue Devil team! This game was hectic because it was 8th grade night for the band (8th graders from Summerour & Pickneville came to play with the NHS band) and I did not pay as much attention to the game as I wanted to. So, anyway, uh, thanks for reading these articles, I appreciate your support!

Wheeler again
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Hey guys, Chris Orf here, coming off of a loss against Walton. Its always sad when you see your team lose, but losing was the worst thing that could happen to us, and after our first half, we deserved it. The game started off with us getting picked and that just set the tone.
For those saying that game shows that Roswell is gonna go downhill, i whole-heartily disagree with you. Some times all a team needs is a nice gut check, to show them that they are beatable, and then they focus alot more. Trust me, next week against Wheeler will be our best game of the season, for two reasons: we want revenge, and now we have something to prove.

Whitewater defeats Creekside!
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
The wildcats went head to head with Creekside tonight. Whitewater started the game with an upsetting touchdown by Creekside leading the score 7-0 in the first quarter. But Whitewater would not let this go unnoticed. They came back with a failed attempt at a field goal by JC Jennings but later received 3 points for another field goal. The ball was passed back and forth until Whitewater work hard and scored a touchdown, moving them into the lead with 10-7. Creekside had the ball in the last quarter and was going all out to score before the clock ran out. They almost had it until WHS, Ian Parsons, intercepted it on the 20 yard line for control of the ball. The Wildcats kept a hold of the ball long enough for the clock to run out leaving them with the win! Go Cats!

Eagle’s Clipped; Barely
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
The Devils went in to South Cobb carrying a two year losing streak and a grudge on their back. On the first possession it showed as Marietta marched down the field for a touchdown on the first drive. From that point on both teams had a few drives where they got down near the red zone but the defenses held and never broke. After half time Marietta’s offense boiled down to nothing, and the defenses were in control. With three minutes left South Cobb got the ball and drove slowly down to the Devils 15-yard line. Where the Devils defense held them to a fourth and eight. The Eagles handed it off to the big running back Powers who threw it to a wide open wide receiver for the tying score, and it would have worked if it wasn’t for a holding call. On the second chance the quarterback hit a wide receiver in the corner of the endzone for six. The fans chanted “Block That Kick” and the special teams came through with a monster block with just 27 seconds left. This game was disturbing to many of the True Blue faithful out there as the offense was completely shut down. In fact I’m not sure we had a first down in the second half (if there was one i apologize and let me know). The defense looked strong again, and the offensive play calling was odd in that it was either a run right up the middle or a long bomb on a go route. But a win is a win is a win, right? How did you all feel about the Devils

Losing streak Snapped
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
For the past three years I have sat and watched my team get pummeled by Woodstock. Last year was the worst. In three overtimes we should have won by a field goal, but the referee said it wasn’t sufficient.
This year, the new and approved team was ready to get back at the Wolverines for not only last year’s loss but the many that came before that.
They did so, in beating Woodstock 16-0. The first touchdown did not occur until the fourth quarter, so it was a definite nail biting contest. Once Michael Turner (6) scored that first touchdown though, Etowah’s crowd errupted. The fans did not calm down, not even after the rushng of the field to celebrate the win.
Cars were honking as they left the parking lot with loud blaring music. Kids were screaming as they were walking to their cars. Air horns were being blown as thunder sticks were being thrashed together.
As Etowah goes on to be named undefeated they are ready to face the teams to come.

Walton, scout report
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Hey guys, this is Chris Orf again, still have not been able to get the stats for this week, hopefully next week will go better.
I’ve been lucky enough to see some game film on Walton and, as expected, they play low and hard, always have, always will. Another thing that Walton has going for them is their stud of a D-End. I haven’t heard anything about him, but apparently hes a D1 prospect, so he might pose some trouble for our Offense.
We’ve developed a sold game plan for this week, with a good week of practice, so this game will sure to be a good, but tough one.

North Atlanta 0-2
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Well, it looks like our mighty Warriors were defeated last week by Redan High School, but hopefully we won’t let the same happen tomorrow with MLK. We were leading most of the game, that was until Redan made a touchdown in the 4th. The final score was 12-7. Tomorrow’s game is against MLK at Grady High, the game starts at about 8pm. So come on down, and support your North Atlanta Warriors! GO WARRIORS!

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Senior running back Darryl Farley scored four touchdowns in Grady’s 48-21 rout of Towers. Grady also played great defense and special teams, muffing two punts and blocking one PAT. Grady has a bye this week and plays at Dunwoody Sept. 28 for their first region game.

Lovett Block Party Tournament
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
On Friday and Saturday, Lovett hosted the Block Party tournament, a prestigious volleyball tournament that it hosts annually. This year it drew 32 of the top volleyball programs from the southeast. Lovett put forth a strong performance winning 4 out of its 5 games.
In addition, the Lovett varsity volleyball team has gotten off to a great start. They are now 17-5 and looking to replicate their great performance which landed them in the State Finals last year. With most of the team returning from last year, they have a great chance to continue playing at this level.

The Titans are 2-1
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
The Northview Titans have started off the season strong. A victory over Mill Creek and Pope, both fans and players a like are showing confidence in the team. This previous Friday the Titans took the field after a cold, stormy afternoon. With the field wet and fans waiting the Titans took the field and began to play an incredible game on both sides of the ball. It was a clutch victory for Northview and kept the momentum up for Kell this weekend. Although the game is away, at Kell, many fans are taking the long trek in order to cheer on their Northview Titans.

Week 4, Roswell V. Walton
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Hey guys, this is Chris Orf. I want to apologize first off for not having the complete stats in, i had the ACTs on Saturday so i couldn’t stop by the school to grab them. anyways back to the scout report for this week. A key player for the Walton team is their QB, Braden Theobold. We’ve seen A LOT of film on him, and he most likely will present the biggest challenge this week. The hornets started off with a good first day of practice, and we’re starting to, “get ‘em in the cross hairs,” as Coach Mac would say. Well, not much left to say, I’ll try to get the stats in tomorrow, but I’m not making any promises. Until next time.

Familiar Feeling
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Chamblee’s first two games are what I call a layup.
The Bulldogs trampled Southside 41-0 on Saturday to move to 2-0. Chamblee continued the strides they had made against South Atlanta by playing tough defense and keeping the ball on the ground.
The great truimph of the game was Chamblee’s defense. Our unit forced six fumbles (and recovered them all) and allowed no first downs. Chamblee caused so many fumbles that Southside did not even get an opportunity to punt.
Chamblee’s offense continued sporting its multi-back scheme. The main offensive weapons have become apparent. Fullback Malcom Giles already has four rushing touchdowns on the season. Halfback Warren Norman was the star performer against Southside with 75 rushing yards on seven attempts. Halfback Darius Jones showed his recieving abilities by catching two throws for 39 yards on Saturday. Also, quarterback Garret Williams has been a solid game manager. Although he has not had many opportunities, he has been accurate with his throws and made big plays with his legs when called upon.
The only notable concern I can see from this game is excessive penalties. Chamblee had 10 penalties for 60 yards against Southside. Against more talented teams, lapses will deflate offensive drives. Their are no room for mental errors when playing on a championship level.

Second time’s the charm; third… not so much
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Every team wants to win the first game of the year. Unfortunately we couldn’t do that this year, but as the team went into the second game, everyone was looking to turn around the season.
After the season opener’s misfiring running game, only averaging half a yard per carry, Spencer Penson really turned up his performance in the second game against Rockdale, taking 21 carries for 149 yards. This combined with another strong performance by quarterback Matt Sweat, picking up 88 yards and two touchdowns through the air, which ultimately proved to be the difference maker. The Panthers won in a close one, 21-14.
With rejuvenated confidence, Starr’s Mill began to prepare for it third opponent, the Eric Berry-less Creekside Seminoles. Creekside, with Berry at the helm, beat us long and deep last year, and no one at the Mill was too happy about that. Last year we had gone into the game hoping to prove to everyone that Berry was overrated and could not stand up to the Mill. Our tailgaters even painted “Eric Who?” across their chest instead of the usual “Go Panthers!” After we lost, the mood changed. Then all the sudden Berry was some kind of football god that could take on a whole team by himself. I heard students say things like, “Creekside didn’t beat us, Eric Berry did.” And now that they didn’t have their god, it was our turn to beat them.
Unfortunately, things didn’t go as planned. We had a lot of dropped balls and overthrown passes, which killed key drives. In the fourth quarter, the Mill was up 9-6. With only about a minute on the clock, head coach Mike Earwood made a controversial decision. With the ball backed up against his end zone, Earwood feared a punt would give Creekside the ball in good field position, so he directed punter Chris Ward to take an intentional safety. The Panthers were still up by a point and senior soccer-player-turned-kicker Sam Martin, who has a strong foot, was called on to free kick. Earwood’s plan would have worked, but special teams broke down on the return. Nobody could bring down the ball carrier and he ran all the way to the Panthers’ five yard-line. With seconds remaining on the clock, Creekside kicked a field goal to win 11-9.

Whitewater loses to a rival
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Friday night Whitewater had a devestating loss to Fayette County High School. The wildcats ran the kickoff all the way back for a touchdown, putting the wildcats up 7 to 0. Wildcat defense was at its strongest with 4 sacs in the 1st half. After half time the tigers came back out ready to play, and scored a touchdown in the third quarter tying the score. In the last 5 minutes of the game the tigers scored another touchdown making the final score 13 to 10. This is the first time in three years that the wildcats have lost to the tigers. Hopefully the wildcats can redeem themselves this Friday as the play Creekside High School @ Whitewater at 7:30. Gooo Cats!

Another win for Milton
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Milton had a great win Friday night beating Sprayberry 35-28.
The mood was set early in the game where Lance Martin blocked and returned a punt for a touchdown. The team seemed to keep the momentum all night where they never lost the lead. Both sides of the ball executed their schemes well and looked prepared.
The offense clearly wanted to run the ball on Sprayberry all night, and they did. The running game was consistent all game, and opened up the offense for Milton. The defense had another good game where they only gave up 14 points to a very quick Sprayberry offense. Sprayberry’s other two scores came off of a punt return and a kick return.
The special teams for Milton will need a little work, but that is normal for it being so early in the season.
The Eagles really seem to be coming together as a team after improving to 2-1. Next week they play Pope away, and Milton will be confident in defending their winning record.View image

Lovett Football Update
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
The Lovett Lions Varsity Football Team, coming off of its bye week, is preparing for their next opponent, Avondale. The Lions, after getting to the Dome last season, find (1-1) after two games. In their first region game against Clarkston Angoras, the Lions rebounded from a devastating (7-27) loss to the arch rival Westminster Wildcats just one week before by defeating the Angoras 35-6. Since the Westminster game, the attitude in practice has become more focused. The Lions plan to build and learn from the Westminster defeat, not allowing it to ruin a potentially great season.
Also, the Lovett JV Football Team is yet to have its first game. The game versus Woodward which was intended for last Thursday was canceled due to the weather. Their next game will September 20th against St. Pius. In addition, the 9th Grade Team is (1-0). The Freshman Lions got off to a good start, defeating St. Pius 41-8. Zach Boden lead to super-powered Lions offense to victory. Overall, Lion’s football is off to a good start and is looking to replicate the success of last year.

Not Even the Rain Can Stop Us.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Once again, the West Forsyth Wolverines have dominated the field with an incredible win against the Forsyth Central Bulldogs. With a final score of 23-16, West Forsyth left the soaking wet field with one more win under its belt.
First quarter started off a little faster than the previous two games with a nerve-wracking touchdown by Central after only 5 minutes. Slowly but surely the clouds rolled in and covered the field, by the next play the rain had begun. Lance Baker made an incredible pass to Andy Cameron who took the ball downfield thirty-eight yards, putting us close enough for a potential touchdown. After a few plays passed, the only choice that the Wolverines had left was a field goal. Despite the rain and the distance between David Camp and the uprights, he made an incredible kick that soared through the air and right between the two yellow posts, bringing the score up to 3-6 with two minutes left in the first quarter. West was still down three, but the game was far from over. Then the rain picked up and became a torrential downpour, soaking everyone and everything in sight. Having my phone, my wallet, and my notebook still on me, I headed for shelter until the rain lightened up a bit. I came back out to the game with eight and a half minutes left in the second quarter.
The score was still 3-6 in favor of Central and the field was now so wet that every step that every player made created a splash of water. After about three minutes of play time Ben Emert made his way to the end zone and scored West’s first touchdown for the night, bringing the score up to 9-6.
The band, despite the rain, still performed and still did a wonderful job. Although they were not allowed to march due to the rain, they still played their show and even added their next song. Austin Edwards, the first chair trumpet, played an incredible solo for the first time in front of an audience and did a wonderful job. Big thanks to the ‘Pride of the West Marching Band!’ Excellent job guys!
Third quarter began and after only fourteen seconds of playtime, Jason Klanac broke free of the Central defenses and made an incredible sixty yard run towards the end zone, scoring West’s second touchdown. The Wolverines followed this up with an extra point; bring the score up to 16-6. After another three and a half minutes of playtime Central got its second touchdown and two extra points, bring the score up to 16-14. Later on in the quarter Ben Sasser made a very long run downfield, and as soon as I find out how long it was, I’ll put it in here. This set us up for a touchdown and at one point I thought Lance Baker made a touchdown but something happened that I think I missed and it didn’t count. Long story short, Central pushed us back and ended the quarter about midfield.
Fourth quarter started and after a few minutes of play time Central pushed us far enough back to get themselves a touchback, tying the score at 16-16. The game started back up and Lance Baker made an incredible pass right into the middle of the mayhem to Jason Klanac who proceeded to gain twenty-nine yards and put us in range for a touchdown. A few plays later, Lance Baker made another incredible pass to Ethan Shirley who gained fifteen yards. Central got a five yard penalty somewhere along the way and that put West at the six yard line on the first down. The Wolverines gained two more yards and that put us at the fourth yard line on the second down. Finally the Wolverines broke through and Harris Evans scored West Forsyth’s third touchdown and that was followed by an extra point, bringing the score up to 23-16. At this point, the Wolverines are all fired up because they know that there’s no way they can lose now. At the kickoff the Wolverines punted it into the mass of Central players and as soon as the ball was caught, it was dropped again, presumably because of the rain. By the time Central recovered the ball; the Wolverines had already gotten in and tackled them all, placing Central a good twenty yards on the wrong side of the fifty yard line. A few plays later the Central quarter back made a frightening pass that would have resulted in a touchdown had Jacob Sloan not jumped into the air and blocked the pass. With two minutes left in the game and four downs later the Wolverines took control of the ball at the thirty-nine yard line. The Wolverines pushed forward to the twenty-seven yard line where they proceeded to make a handoff, gaining fourteen more yards. The Wolverines were now within thirteen yards of the end zone and only one minute and forty-one seconds left in the game. The game was coming to a close with no hope left for Central and whether out of exhaustion or respect, Lance Baker put his knee down for the next two plays and let the clock run down, ending the game with West Forsyth as the victors. The record now stands at 3-0.
No matter the conditions, it’s obvious that West Forsyth has become a very formidable team, and will, with no doubt, win many more games this season. Congratulations Wolverines!

Spirited Mercy Bobcats Fall Short to Athens Christian Academy
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Bostick’s 5 TD’s Too Much for Our Lady of Mercy
Athens Christian Academy and Our Lady of Mercy traded possessions and played to a scoreless first quarter. In the second quarter, each team scored twice, a quarter in which Athens Christian Academy held a 14-0 lead. Mercy sent the game tied at the half 14-14 thanks to a 98 yard kickoff return by Dominique McDermott and a 30yard touchdown pass from William Pearl to Derek Schawan. Mercy tied the score at 21 when William Pearl hit Dominique McDermott with a swing pass in which he raced 40 yards for a touchdown. Bostick scored his 4th touchdown with 2:56 remaining in the 3rd quarter. The 3rd quarter ended with Athens Christian leading 28-21. Mercy blew an opportunity to tie the game when a wide-open receiver dropped a perfect pass from QB William Pearl. Kicker Jacob Lescene kicked a field goal to bring Mercy within 4 points—-28-24. Bostick would finish off mercy with one more touchdown to put the game out of reach with 4:19 remaining on the clock in the 4th quarter. Overall, the Bobcats played a good game. Go Bobcats!!!

The Grayson Rams Get Trampled On
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
The Norcross Blue Devils had won their past two Friday night games with flying colors. With the third game taking place at the Blue Devil Stadium, the Devils were ready to take on the Rams; others, however, thought differently.
Some people had wondered how this past Friday’s Norcross-Grayson game would end up. Last year, Norcross barely defeated Grayson 7-6, and then later in the playoffs into double-overtime at 27-21. I thought that this game would be a nail-biter and hoped that our team would not get cocky; I couldn’t have been more wrong. The Grayson Rams couldn’t get past us to make a single touchdown. The Blue Devils hit the ground running in the first quarter at 7-0, then a field goal plus another touchdown later to make it 17-0 at half-time. As the Blue Devils prepared for the second half, the Norcross band took the stage (in the rain, might I add) to further anticipate the Blue Devil win!
When the Blue Devils returned, the Rams had managed to get a three-point field goal for the game; the cheer of the Grayson fans quickly faded as we answered with an 80-yard run for a touchdown which had inevitably silenced the Rams for good at a stunning 24-3. After all, 3-0 is the way to go! Yeah Norcross!

Led to the slaughter
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Hey guys, this is Chris Orf, just getting home from the RHS game. Roswell Trampled the Longhorns in a 42-7 win. First pay of the game, Dominique Wheeler took it 81 yards to the 17 yard line, that just set the tone for the game offensively.
There were many standout players this game, Dustin threw amazingly, Ebelle got us a turnover and many tackles. Chuka got one great catch that i remember. Duvalle ran the ball hard. The line all together had a good game.
This game was a tribute to a good week of practice, good gameplan, and most of all, a good team spirit that will flourish through the hornets all season. Good night, and I hope to see you next week, at Walton.

Not Much Rain… Not Much Offense
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
The Marietta Blue Devils and the Campbell Spartans got started with a 90% chance of rain Friday night. The rain never came, and it felt like the points didnt either. Both teams defenses played well on a night that neither offense seemed to click. In a 14-0 victory, Marietta’s offense couldnt get anything until the second quater when a Campbell corner bit on a Stanley Jennings pump fake, and he connected with Jeremy Hill on a 36-yard scoring strike, they scored again in the fourth quarter. Worrisome in the Devils offense was that the offensive line, somewhat inconsistent with the past two weeks, failed to open holes for the running game. Also Jennings and the wide receivers failed to connect on a few routes and miscommunication was common. However, all in all, the boys played well enough to win and we are 3-0. Player of the game though was Jeremy Hill # 8 who had 4 receptions for 82 yards and a touchdown as well as 2 interceptions on defense. Thoughts?

Rocky Chiefs look to rebound
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Look at the past. 8-4 in 2001. 8-3 in 2002. 8-3 in 2003 (Region 6-AAAAA Champs). 11-2 in 2004 (#5 in Class AAAAA). 8-3 in 2006. 47-20 in the past 6 seasons.
Sequoyah lost to Etowah and Woodstock this season, just the second time in 9 years that has ever occurred in the same season under Sid Maxwell. After falling to Etowah in the first week before experiencing a bye, Sequoyah is looking to bounce back from their 31-7 loss in a battle with Osborne. Their first Region 5-AAAA matchup of the season, the Chiefs are led by senior quarterback Nathan Grummer, who was 0 for 9 against the Eagles on August 31st. Last season, the Chiefs defeated the Cardinals 36-0 behind the powerful tank Adam Mincey.

Pigskin Picnic
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
While leaving Washington County with a 35-7 win last Friday, the Westminster Wildcats felt that their multiple hour-long drive had been worthwhile. The Cats were not expected to beat Hawks, and had been demolished by them last season when the Hawks came to Westminster. But the Wildcats were on a roll coming off their defeat of archrival Lovett, and junior quarterback Tom Moak continued to step up while filling in for injured senior Clay Gibson. Moak was 4 for 8 passing while throwing for 4 of the Cats’ 5 touchdowns. This coming Friday is Westminster’s Pigskin Picnic, a pregame celebration where the fans are welcome to arrive at the game early for food and games, in which they will take on Carrollton, who is ranked #2 in AAA after their win last week. This is a very highly anticipated game, and I believe that both teams will definitely prove to be tough opponents.

Another Win For the Raiders
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Friday night’s game was nothing short of an action packed adventure. Last time the Raiders took on the Lasers it was an easy victory, with the Laser not putting one point on the scoreboard. However, that was not the case Friday. It was as close game with the Raiders winning in overtime by one point. When asked about the game the Southside Lasers refused to comment. Yet they handed off backhanded comments like, “They cheated.”
Nonetheless, bad attitudes did not stop the Raiders from having a great game. Players # 4 Jay Scott, # 11 Charlie Hollman, # 6 Lefloyd Phillips, # 13 Jay Brown, and # 1 Demetrius Hightower, were among the outstanding players of the night. Just after halftime, # 11 Charlie Hollman suffered an injury and was forced to watch the game from the sidelines. However, he was back in the game by fourth quarter contributing greatly to our one point win.
Raider Mania was again in full force on Friday night, perhaps even more so than last week. The stands were full of fans young and old alike. A group of boys even went as far as to paint their bodies blue and white to spell out go Riverwood. Needless to say it was like the Raiders won a championship when they ending up winning 14-13 in overtime. Let’s hope our winning streak continues this Saturday as we take on South Atlanta at Grady.

Game 3 Roswell V Kell
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Hey guys, Chris Orf again, bringing a brief injury report and a scouting report for RHS’s opponents this week, Kell. Our only injury this week appears to be Bryce Beckman who was down today due to a knee injury, but he looks like he’ll be fine. He kept his knee iced the majority of the practice though. Kell, missing their D1 prospect Johnathan Dwyer (i probally butchered that spelling), will have a weaker running game than they duid last year. Like Lassiter, they have a big line, and they know how to work. No one stands out among their passing core from what I’ve seen, so I see the majority of their plays going on the ground. I’ll give you another report Thursday about Kell.

West Forsyth is 2-0
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Friday night’s game was a hit! The turnout for the game was well over 3000 people and the support that everyone gave to the Wolverines was tremendous. The first half of the first quarter consisted mainly of trading possession a few times and no touchdowns. That all changed when Rusty Juneu made an amazing twenty-eight yard run down the field after faking out an innumerable amount of East Jackson players, putting us into position for a touchdown made by Jacob Sloan. Shortly after the Wolverines followed up the touchdown with two extra points run in by Ethan Shirley who received an incredible pass from the quarterback, Lance Baker.
The second quarter began slowly, just as the first quarter had and consisted of a lot of changing of possession until the very end with only seven and a half seconds left. East Jackson made a touchdown followed by running in two extra points, leaving the score tied at Halftime.
The halftime show was phenomenal. Thank you to the East Jackson band and to the West Forsyth band for both of your wonderful performances.
I missed the first half of the third quarter because I had to get something to eat and do a little socializing…what can I say? When I got back to the game not much had happened, although I did hear some cheering from the West fans, so I’m guessing it was a really nice play. Either way, when I returned the score was still tied up. With two minutes left in the quarter though, I did watch as Lance Baker made another amazing pass to Ethan Shirley who scored West Forsyth’s second touchdown, bringing the score up to fourteen to eight with West Forsyth still in the lead. Unfortunately the Wolverines didn’t get an extra point, thus concluding the third quarter.
Fourth quarter started off with a very stunning run by East Jackson, dodging all of the West Forsyth defenses and gaining well over fifty yards until they were finally brought down. Luckily for West, East Jackson had broken some rule in doing this. East Jackson was brought all the way back to where they had started from, so essentially they hadn’t gained anything. Later on in the quarter Lance Baker was put in a position that left him with only one option - to run. Once he got through East Jackson’s defenses he made an incredible fifty-one yard run towards the end zone until he was tackled at the twenty-four yard line, putting West in range for a third touchdown. A few plays went by and West got a penalty and was sent back ten yards. A few more plays went by and Lance Baker made a pass towards the end zone but it was intercepted. East Jackson pushed us back into our end of the field until they were well in range of their own touchdown. East Jackson ended up on the twenty yard line with two minutes left in the game, and despite their efforts, the Wolverines held them off for two whole minutes and sealed their fate as the victors. Congratulations to the Wolverines on their second win!
Also, I would like to congratulate the softball team on their first win, Coach Orr on his 400th career win, and the freshman football team on their win on Thursday night. Good Job everyone!

Hoyas Humiliate Hornets
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
The Harrison Hoya Football team held its opponent scoreless for the second straight game. Coming off a huge and momentous win against the Lowndes Vikings last Friday, the Hoyas were pitted against the Hiram Hornets at Hoya Stadium. After holding a Lowndes team, which is notorious for its success, to 0 points and only 155 total yards, the Hoyas came in against the Hornets with the confidence that their defense could get the job done. Hiram was by no means as formidable of an opponent as Lowndes, but their offensive attack does feature a quick and powerful tailback in Coshik Williams, who ran for over 1600 yards last year. Despite Williams’ impressive credentials, the Hoyas held Hiram’s star back to a dismal 2 yards on 10 carries. In addition to shutting down Hiram’s rushing attack, the Hoyas harassed the Hornets quarterback all game, forcing him to make some bad decisions and throw 2 interceptions.
Last week against Lowndes the Hoyas posted 9 points, which would prove to be enough, but did so on only 166 yards of total offense. With the quickness and power in the Hoya run game as well as Darvin Adams lining up at wide receiver on the outside, 166 yards is a number you would expect in only one of the offensive categories. But, where the Hoyas lacked against Lowndes, the certainly made up against Hiram. The Hoyas posted an impressive 44 points on 6 touchdowns and a safety which came earlier in the game. The offensive line of the Hoyas more than did their job by clearing the way for the Hoya running backs who combined for nearly 270 yards on the ground. In addition to guiding the run game, the O-line protected quarterback Christian Burnett and allowed him to make several big plays, including a 20-yard touchdown strike to Adams. Following the safety the Hoyas scored a touchdown in the first quarter on a one-yard run from Robbie Godhigh. In the second quarter, our Hoyas erupted for 28 points on touchdowns from Christian Burnett, Darvin Adams, Andre Williams, and another score by Godhigh. The Hoyas led 37-0 at the half and didn’t score the whole second half until the fourth quarter (Luke’s quarter) when Jamal Austin took a toss from Burnett for 77 yard touchdown run.
After two weeks of play, our Hoyas are 2-0 and have yet to give up a touchdown or field goal. The confidence and chemistry the Hoyas have accumulated through these first two weeks could prove useful this Friday as they travel to North Cobb to take on the Warriors and their potent offense. Last year the Warriors gave our guys a battle, but we came out on top. This year they will face a Warrior team who, along with the Hoyas are among the top teams in region 5-AAAAA. There is no doubt that the Warriors will be a tough test for the Hoyas, but in this writer’s opinion, one thing remains certain: if the Hoyas continue with their stingy defense, there may be no one in the region, let alone the state who can beat them.

Milton falls to 1-1
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
The Eagles lost their first game of the season friday night to Etowah 10-0. Milton’s rushing attack was shut down early in the ball game, and they could not seem to find any rhythm in their offense all night. Etowah clearly came into the game focusing on shutting down Milton’s running game and succeeded with Milton only averaging 2.2 yards a carry. The passing game was not real sharp for Milton either, but that was not Andrew Matthieson’s fault as he did everything he could to help drives going in the game. Milton is relying on a young offensive line to step up and play varsity football this year, and the first games of the season are a great deal of learning for the inexperienced players. It may take a few more games for the inexperienced offensive lineman to come together and play better football, but the good thing for Milton is these young players can only grow in experience and get better.
On the other side of the ball, Milton’s defense had another solid football game. Drew Collins led the eagles defense again with 9 solo tackles, 5 assist, and one recovered fumble. Etowah put up a quick ten points on the Milton defense in the first quarter, but Milton shut out Etowah for the rest of the game. The defense never showed signs of letting up at any point even when they seemed to be on the field all night. Milton’s offense had six three and outs and forced the defense to make big stops throughout the second half to keep the team in the game. The defense made all the necessary stops, but the offense never came through. The team is moving in the right direction, but their weaknesses were surely exploited last friday. The Eagles offense can explode at any point with Lance Martin and Toney Williams in the backfield along with a solid quarterback, but the offensive line will have to improve. The defense looks stronger than ever and have really seemed to come together as a unit. Milton will be tested next week when they play an athletic Sprayberry team at home next week.

Bobcats fight the Grizzlies…
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Creekview routs Our Lady of Mercy 43-7. It was a long night for the inexperienced OLM Bobcats. On their first possession, what appeared to be a touchdown and a 6-0 lead was wiped out by a penalty. This should have been an indication that it would be a long night for the OLM Bobcats. Creekview scored a touchdown on its first possession and a field goal on its second possession for a 10-0 lead. The rout began as OLM could not mount any offense. OLM trailed Creekview 37-0 at the half. OLM had another touchdown in the 2nd half called back due to a penalty. Finally, OLM put a touchdown on the board in the final quarter to prevent a shutout. Dominique McDermott had some good receptions for OLM, Christian Willis had a few good runs, and Will Simmons had a good game defensively. Next week, OLM has a bye week to straighten out some execution flaws on offense and defense. Go Bobcats!!!
Tell me what you thought… I want to hear from you!!!

Another win for the Warriors
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
The Warriors played their first home game against the South Cobb Egeals this Friday. The team has been doing very well. For the second time they only let the other team score once the entire game. In the last quarter the score was 28-7 Warriors. With only one minute remaining on the clock the Warriors kept playing hard and scored another touch down making the final score 35-7. Next week we play Harrison, one of our bigest rivals, but I’m sure if we keep up this momentum we could beat any team out there. I would also like to mention that this was the first time our marching band performed, and they did amazingly, just as was expected of one of the best bands in the county.

Another Win, New Regulations
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
The Etowah Eagles have another win under their belt due to their 10-0 win over Milton. It was their season home opener and they were playing on their brand new Astro Turf. The game was recorded on Cherokee TV which is an on the web video.
The Etowah fans are really into this season with the new field and the new and approved team on the field, but one thing is stopping them from enjoying it like in the years past.
There are new regulations that come with Friday night football games. There is now a dress code, the same as the schools. Girls can’t wear shorts or the little tank tops. Many girls have made senior and junior tank tops for the season already. Guys have to wear shirts which means they can’t paint their whole body like they used to do. Not only that, but the middle school kids are not allowed to come to the football games without adult supervision. The second you step foot out of the gate you are not allowed back into the game, which many kids think is another uncalled-for rule.
Many students are very upset with the new rules. Kelsey Brown, a senior, says, “I used to pay money to support my school and my team, show other schools how proud I am of our spirit, and hang out in a place where I don’t have to worry about getting yelled at for something petty. But now I pay MORE MONEY to park in my own school, show other schools how uptight the rules are about shorts… And not be allowed to re-enter the field after telling a friend goodbye.”
The Woodstock game is next and let me tell you, for us students that is the biggest thrill of the year. We make T-shirts, paint our cars, paint ourselves, we get decked out in any way possible. We chant louder than ever. We show spirit more than in any other game. Many students are worried that these rules are going to hold our spirit down. And if you look at the scores, 28-0 and 31-7, that was when the rules weren’t in place.
Now look, we won only 10-0 last Friday when the rules were set. Most people left right away within minutes of the first quarter being started. What is this going to do to our new and approved team? So many seniors, including myself, were looking forward to this season hoping that our last year here, would be a winning championship season.
Are we going to have to limit our fun while watching the season progress? It sure seems like it.

Norcross takes the lead 2-0
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Norcross travels to Northview for the second away game; the Blue Devils battled the Titans on an astroturf field. The game began slow, with the Blue Devils making a quick three-point score. A bit of time passed when the Titans suddenly squeezed in a touchdown. The home side of the stadium roared at their little victory. But unfortunately for them, their spirit quickly diminished as that would be the only touchdown the make in the game. The seven points for the Titans was a quick wake up call for Norcross. With the “away” side of the stadium extremely packed with devoted fans, the band, and Blue Crew for the big N, the Blue Devil Varsity team went above and beyond their already high expectations. By half time, Norcross was finally in the lead. That left the band to play a fantastic half-time show, with an excited feel of beating the Titans. After the marching show, things only went uphill for the Blue Devils.
As the game approached the final minutes of the fourth quarter, the Blue Devils took down the Titans 31-7 and is currently undefeated.

McIntosh is defeated by East Coweta
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
After last week’s game anything seemed possible for the McIntosh Chiefs. The players were ready. The fans were pumped, making the 20 minute drive to support their players. The Chiefs played well, but were unfortunately defeated by the East Coweta Indians last night.
The first quarter proved that the teams were pretty equally matched. At the end of the quarter the score remained at 0-0. In the second quarter East Coweta scored a touchdown followed by McIntosh kicking in a field goal. This made the score 7-3, East Coweta, at the end of the first half.
McIntosh took the lead in the third quarter. After a 10 minute drive, Jeff Prather threw a 14 yard touchdown to Bradley Larson, making the score 10-7 with McIntosh in lead. They held onto this score for the rest of the quarter.
In the fourth quarter with seven minutes to go McIntosh still had the lead. East Coweta was close to the end zone and went for a touchdown. Quarterback Ben Sims batted the ball down, but it landed in the hands of the Indians who then ran it in for a successful touchdown. A few minutes later East Coweta took a fumble and ran it to the end zone making the score 20-10, East Coweta. McIntosh played hard, but were not able to recover from the two touchdowns.
Last nights game featured many stand out players on McIntosh’s side. Nick Popiel, a fullback, had an astounding 100 rushing yards during the game and Matt Mateos kicked a field goal for the Chiefs. Bradley Larson made countless tackles and scored the touchdown with the help of Jeff Prather.
Even after last nights defeat, McIntosh fans, myself included, are still convinced that we will come out on top this year!!! Good luck Chiefs!!!!

Turner Tumbles Longhorns
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Kelsey Turner trampled the Longhorn defense for 217 yards and 2 touchdowns on just 14 carries as the Blue Devils won 42 -9 at Northcutt Stadium Friday night. He asserted himself as a home run threat every time he touched the ball. Turner had runs of 79, 66, 36 and 24 yards, allowing him to average 15.5 yards per carry. Despite Turner’s impressive statistics this was a team effort. The defense held strong allowing just 9 points this game and averaging 8 points per game. Junior Chris Tanzy had a highlight reel strip in the second quarter, tearing the football from the hands the Kell runner and returning it 71 yards for the score. Senior quarterback Stanley Jennings completed 9 of 13 pass attempts for 135 yards and two touchdowns. The touchdown passes were a 36 yarder to Jeremy Hill in the first quarter, and Junior Vernon White scored his first touchdown as a varsity running back on a one yard run in the first quarter. The Devils controlled the game from start to finish, thanks to consistent play on both sides of the ball. Junior Chase Morgan and Senior Michael Stiles combined to go 6-6 on PAT’s so the kicking seems strong. After two games Marietta’s revamped 3-5 defense has proven strong but will receive a real test next week against Campbell.

Game Day Roswell v. Lassiter
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Today is game day vs Lassiter. Roswell had a good week of practice, and we’re ready for it. Lassiter’s biggest threat seems to (as always) come from their O line, although I’ve heard rumors that their Running Back is pretty good too.
As far as injuries go, unless by some random act of God, Foo’s gonna play, AD practiced for Weds and Thurs, so he’s fine, and Ebelle is back up aswell. Look foward to an explosive performance tonight on both sides of the ball for the Hornets, hope to see you there.

Last Year’s Win Undeserved?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Some say that last years ELCA win over Brookstone was undeserved because we recovered a bad snap and scored with little time left on the clock. I believe that the win was deserved because turnovers are a part of football. It is what you do with the turnovers that make you derserving or undeserving. The Chargers were not handed the ball and told to walk into the end zone. We had to drive the ball and score with little time on the clock against a tough defense.
What do you think? Deserved or undeserved?

Week 2 Roswell V. Lassiter
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Hey guys, its Chris Orf again. Most of ya’ll saw or heard about the Brookwood game, and know that we came out on top, but this is a new week, and as coach Varner says, we’re 1-0 and miserable.
You guys know the joke about Lassiter; their band is better then their team. Film shows some things that we can exploit for a win, and our schemes starting to revolve around it this week. Lassiter had a good line last year, and thier line seems to be just as big this year, but they didnt produce last week vs Marrietta.
We’ve had two good days so far, but we have a few key players down for these practices with small injuries, and will be back for the game. And speaking of injuries, Foo didnt break his leg on Saturday, and is at practice this week. We’ll have two more good days of practice and then hit the field. The teams focusing and learning everything they can for the game. This promises to be a good game.

Rough start for WHS
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Friday night Whitewater suffered a huge loss against Newnan. The first half was great for the wildcats with a touchdown interception by Chris Asbury in the first three minutes, making the score 7 to 0. In the second half Newnan came out with all guns firing scoring three impressive touchdowns. Newnans intimidating defensive line kept running back, Collin Wooddy, for gaining any much needed yardage the whole game. The wildcats kicker JC Jennings gained points with every kick he attempted helping the wildcats but not taking them to victory. The final score of the game was Whitewater 13 Newnan 21. The cats play the Sandy Creek Patriots this friday at 7:30 at SC. Gooooo Cats!

The Battle of Buckhead
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
In one of the most anticipated games of the season, the Westminster Wildcats beat their local rival Lovett for the first time in the past three years this past Friday night. After an incredible 2006 season, the Lovett Lions were ranked sixth in AA while the Wildcats of AAA were unranked. The AJC stated that one of the only reasons that the Cats had a chance of winning the game was because of the experience of their senior quarterback-he was actually injured and replaced by a junior. The Cats got fired up with a pep rally during their assembly period that day which included a segment of the cheerleaders’ halftime show, a hula hoop contest, and finally the decapitation of a lion piƱata. The 2008 Westminster seniors could not have been more pumped up to beat the Lions for the first time in their high school football careers. The class of 2009 really stepped it up for the Wildcats-junior Tom Moak started at quarterback, Ross Conway rushed for 105 yards, and Stephon Shelton completed two of the Cats’ three touchdowns while rushing for 53 yards and gaining 138 on punt returns. We’re looking forward to a great season.

Well, the Eagles had their first defeat over the Chiefs in six years on Friday night. Etowah won 31-7. Now Etowah has beat two teams and our rival Woodstock has beat two teams. It looks like we both have great offense and defense, so our matchup should be pretty intense. That is all I have for you all now, but stayed tuned.

NC Warriors defeat Kell
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
North Cobb played at Kell last Friday and they did amazingly on their first game. The Warriors started off by stealing the ball from Kell and scoring right away. After Kell scored once the Warriors shut them down to go on to win it 36- 6 even after most of the fans left due to bad weather. A great start for the team. This was the first time we bet them since we started playing Kell. It was a great way to kick off what looks to be a good season.

Sequoyah sports this week
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
- Chiefs Football:
Unfortunately we suffered our first loss of the season, which sounds okay when you put it like that. But it was only the first game. Etowah came to Skip Pope Stadium and took the victory home with a 31-7 thumping. Our guys fought hard, driving downfield twice and reaching inside the 10, but could not capitalize and get the points. Senior Daniel Cadavid drove in the lone touchdown for Sequoyah on a two-yard sneak up the middle late in the 4th. Etowah’s getting some pretty massive men off Towne Lake Parkway; their lines looked dominant. It’s got to be hard on my fellow seniors, but we can only look ahead to the following weeks. Congratulations to the Eagles, they deserved it. We can bounce back from it.
- Chiefs Softball:
The defending state champion Lady Chiefs defeated South Paulding Thursday night 2-1. In just their fourth match-up one month into the season, the Lady Chiefs have fallen in the rankings from 2 to 5, but have maintained a spotless record. They have a busy week upcoming, however, with scheduled play against East Paulding at home on Thursday, and a two-game tourney night against Marist & Chestatee at Hobgood Park on Friday. The Cherokee County Championships follow on Saturday. There is a lot at stake this week between region & county foes so good luck Lady Chiefs.
- Chiefs Volleyball:
The young Lady Chiefs have only posted two victories so far this season, but the schedule has been tough. Coming off a 40-10 season and finishing 2006 ranked #6 in AAAA with Cherokee County & Area 5-AAAA titles, head coach Kelly Audia scheduled tough. The Lady Chiefs have had playdates against five AAAAA schools and three against AAA volleyball powerhouses Westminster and Blessed Trinity. They are humbled, but not defeated. They hope to bounce back against county and area schools through the remainder of the season.
- Chiefs XC:
The Clara Bowl. The largest campus in the world. 70 teams and 500 runners per race. It’s quite the overwhelming experience, but the Chiefs do not get overwhelmed. Everyone ran well but the final team standing boasted no strong performances. It is hoped that the teams can muster up a few strong finishes this season, but there is no telling from this rocky start. Next week is the Warpath Invitational at Boling Park in Canton. The Chiefs are always ready to perform well at this course because it attends at least one meet here every year. Good luck to my fellow runners next week.

First Game Ends with a Big Win
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
What an amazing game Saturday night! The first quarter was a little rough with Mill Creek scoring a touchdown after the first five minutes, but as far as I could tell, that just pushed the Wolverines even harder. They held off Mill Creek until about 7 minutes into the second quarter where they pulled ahead with one touchdown and an extra point. At halftime the score was West-7, Mill Creek-6. I want to send out a special thanks to the West Forsyth marching band for putting on an awesome halftime show. Third quarter was graced with a touchdown by the Wolverines about 5 minutes in, followed by a another extra point kick which brought West up to 14, leaving Mill Creek down by 8 points. Fourth quarter was mostly uneventful, until the last few seconds where the game ended somewhere around the 50 yard line with the West Forsyth Wolverines winning their first game ever!
Congratulations to the Wolverines and their coaches!

Shutout
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
The 2007 football season kicked off Friday night as the Milton Eagles stomped Forsyth Central in a dominate defensive performance 14-0. The Eagles much improved defense returns 9 starters, including last years leading tackler Drew Collins. Collins led the defense in tackles again Friday with 7 solo tackles, 4 assist, and 2 sacks. Six players on defense had atleast three or more solo tackles in the game. Forsyth Central did not score on the Milton , and even worse they did not even cross the Milton 35 yard line. The huge crowd seemed to give Milton a huge boost on the playing field. The hardcore student section was led by the diehard Milton football fan, Jordan Wright.
The Milton offense was led by the best running back duo in the region Lance Martin and Toney Williams with a combined 284 rushing yards. Williams averaged 7.6 yards a carry and had one rushing touchdown. The new Milton quarterback, Andrew Mattieson, went 8-17 for 139 yards and one passing touchdown to Toney Williams. The Eagles executed on both sides of the ball and will be confident playing at Etowah next week. View image

Raiders Beat Panthers 22-0
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Riverwood Raiders are off to a great start with a 22-0 win over Therrell High School on Friday night. Before the game Therrell captains Corey Walker, Regindo Curry, Danny Roby, and Joshua Postell, who are all seniors, seemed very confident of a win. When asked their opinion of the Riverwood football program they responded “Riverwood has a decent team, but we still beat them last year and we are going to beat them this year.” Also when asked what they would say to the Riverwood captains if given the chance before the game they responded, “We would tell them to bring their A game.”
However, it was Riverwood that bought their A game Friday. With players like # 11 Charlie Hollman, # 3 Hunter Andrews, # 4 Jay Scott, # 13 Jay Brown, # 6 Lefloyd Phillips, # 87 Grayson Euler, and # 72 James McIver making excellent plays and playing an outstanding game, there was no way the Raiders were going to lose to the Panthers this time. In the first quarter alone Lefloyd Phillips on a first and ten rushed for 42 yards that led to a touchdown. Senior Jay Scott had a 16 yard pick up and was assisted Jay Brown in scoring the first touchdown of the night. By halftime the Raiders had 14 points on the board.
During the third quarter neither the Raiders nor the Panthers had any success in scoring. But, by the fourth quarter Raiders picked up their momentum and scored another touchdown with a two point conversion making the score 22-0. The Raider fans were also on fire Friday night. At the beginning of the game it began to rain. This did not stop our fans from having fun. In fact, it probably made it more fun for them. With stands full of Riverwood students soaking wet and still enthusiastic about the game. Commenting on bad calls from the referees and helping out the cheerleaders with their cheers Raider Mania was in full force on Friday. Hopefully both the Raider fans and players can bring their A game again next Friday night as the Raiders take on Southside.

Domination
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
With the close ones must come the blow outs. Chamblee crushed South Atlanta 46-0 in the Bulldog’s season opener. No one really knew what to expect coming into this game. Leaving the game, the fans felt satisfied of the new Bulldog’s look under Coach Showfety. Chamblee controlled all aspects of the game. Even when it seemed that South Atlanta would remove the treacherous zero after completing three straight passes, Chamblee intercepted an under thrown pass in the endzone and ran it back for eighty one yards.
Saturday’s game forshadows how the Bulldogs will go about their business this season. They will primarily keep it on the ground. Chamblee relies on its core of talented running backs such as Darius Jones (Roddy Jones’s younger brother), Malcom Beyah, and Warren Norman to advance the ball. Bulldogs depend on producing three and outs and turnovers. Since the Bulldogs will pass sparingly, field position is key in consistently scoring touchdowns. Also, strong special teams are monumental in winnning the field position battle. Special teams looked solid against South Atlanta which will be the x-factor all season. Even with this opening sucess, the path ahead gets significantly difficult when hitting the divisional meat of our schedule, where the pressure of the playoffs will appear.

Panthers off to a disappointing start
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
After what could easily be described as an easy win over Cherokee last year at the Dome, most fans were expecting to see a similar outcome this year. Unfortunately, Cherokee came out much stronger, and it was evident early on that this was going to be a difficult game.
Throughout the entire game our defense looked really solid and wasn’t giving up much yardage. But unfortunately, neither was Cherokee’s. The surprisingly low score of only 10-3 can be attributed to good defensive efforts by both teams. But when it mattered most, late into the 4th quarter, Cherokee’s defense was able to come up with a key interception that pretty much sealed the Panther’s fate.
Despite the disappointing loss, there were a few things I saw that showed potential for the future. First off, after the much loved Robby Davis graduated last year, there were many questions about how well Matt Sweat could take over in the quarterback position. After his strong performance at the Dome, most of these questions have been answered. He came out throwing quite a bit, and hit his target most of the time. Which brings me to my second point: Lantrell Anderson, a junior wide receiver, showed some great hands and made a couple spectacular catches. Every team needs to have one go-to-guy who the quarterback can always count on when he is in a difficult situation. If he keeps playing like has, it seems Anderson could be that guy. Lastly, like I said earlier, our defense held up very strong. Even if we did lose this one, the defense only gave up 10 points. Now all we need is for the offense to start pulling their weight, and Starr’s Mill should win a lot of football games.

The Show Must Go On!
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Stormy weather came to many high school football games; some games were postponed, and even canceled. However, the Norcross-Duluth game was different. The show went on for the Blue Devils, and with no surprise, came out victorious!
Kick-off began promptly at 7:30 PM, but the skies looked grim from the beginning. The first quarter began slow, with Norcross making a touchdown in the first few minutes. Then a touchdown shortly followed by Duluth. With just a few minutes left remaining on the clock for the first quarter, lightning decided to pay us a visit. Not wanting to take any risks against mother nature, the game was announced to be delayed. The band quickly left the stands first and into the school as not to ruin their uniforms. Then, then the rest of audience of both teams evacuated into a nearby gym. The delay lasted almost an hour, but rest assured, the game would continue.
Afterwards, the game started gaining some momentum. The Blue Devils would began to leave the Duluth Wildcats in the dust. With the skies still drizzling, everyone was even more pumped up then before. The amazing Blue Crew, Marching Band, and the Norcross Community cheered the Blue Devils to a great game leaving the score at 47-12.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
“We make it rain,” was said by Chris Bonjiorono, a dedicated student and fan of the Dacula Falcons. Unfortunately, it seems that was all they could do. While we did see a few raindrops on the ground last night, a Falcon victory was nowhere to be found. When asked what their predictions were going into the game, it was obvious they knew that they didn’t stand a chance against Central. “Well we knew we would have a lot of fun,” was one thing said by Stephen Parrish, another extrememly devoted fan of Dacula.
Central on the other hand, was a bit more…comfortable… in the game coming up. “I think we are going to win. No we are definately going to win,” was said by Jasmyn Harper, a senior at Central Gwinnett High. Even throughout the friday school day everyone had already decided that the game was pretty much over with us taking the win.
While we were right this time (i mean come on dacula 31-14?), our attitudes better change before we get a little too comfortable with ourselves and we become that school that everyone hates.
Nonetheless, Congrats to Central (especially Big D who ran 50 yards!), and good luck in the upcoming games.

Game Time
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Hey guys, Chris Orf again, for the RHS Hornets. Tonights going to be a great game, Roswell coming off a good full week of practice, braving the elements just so we can get prepared for this game. Roswell is focused, prepared, and PUMPED for this game (even with the horrible pep rally yesterday). Tonights clash will set the tone for this season, lets see if the Hornets can produce.

Hoyas Victimize Vikings
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
The first night of the regular season of high school football has officially come to a close. Most of the games played across Georgia on Friday evening were plagued by downpours and soggy conditions that are quite unfavorable for football games. In addition to unfavorable conditions, the Hoyas endured a 4-hour bus ride down to Lowndes. After waiting out nearly an hour-and-a-half lightning delay, the Hoyas took the field and prepared for kick-off. By scoring on the second play of the game on a pass from Christian Burnett to Jamal Austin, the Hoyas immediately proved that regardless of the conditions and a lengthy bus ride, they were ready to play. The expression may sound more than a little cliche, but once you step out on the field under the lights, it’s time to play.
Following the early touchdown, the Hoyas missed the extra point. Up 6-0, the Hoyas marched their defense on to the field: a defense which proved to be impenetrable throughout the game. Most of the first half featured a scoreless battle with both teams showcasing a strong defense. The Hoyas and Vikings exchanged possessions with both teams having little success moving the ball on offense. Lowndes somehow found a way to contain the potent running attack of the Harrison which features the likes of Alphonso Griffin, Robbie Godhigh, and Jamal Austin among others. Regardless, as the game approached halftime, the Hoyas found a way to drive the ball down the field and capitalized on a field goal attempt by Eric Cobleigh just before the half.
Coming out of the lockeroom, the Hoyas led 9-0 and sought to keep the momentum they had accumulated in the first half. In the second half, the Good Guys from Harrison maintained the strong defense. While a great defense thwarted the Lowndes offense, perhaps the most important to key to the game was the fact the that the Hoyas played turnover-free ball. The second half dragged on and neither team scored. Lowndes wasn’t able to much of anything on offense and turned the ball over several times late in the game, giving the Hoyas the ball and the opportunity to run out the clock. The Vikings had posession of the ball with just a minute left, and still down 0-9, they attempted several desperation passes downfield, including a final heave which was intercepted by Corey Knowles with under 5 seconds left. The Hoyas ran out the clock, and when the clock read 0:00, our team from Harrison came out victorious by a final score of 9-0.
With a huge win over a State-power like Lowndes (8 in Georgia in 5-AAAAA) the outlook for the rest of the season looks extremely bright. In addition to the great win, the team received significant contributions from a multitude of Hoya players, which is definitely a good sign. After such a win, the Hoyas have great amount of momentum and confidence that could certainly prove useful going in to next week and the rest of the season. The rest of the season will by no means be an easy road to travel, but if tonight’s game is any indication, success certainly seems to be in store for the Harrison Hoya football team.
Sure, our team will have to sit through yet another 4-hour bus ride on the way back to Kennesaw, but with a win over a football giant Lowndes to enjoy, the ride back will seemingly be significantly easier to endure. The Vikings became the first team to join the list of Hoya victims this season, and in this writer’s opinion, they certainly won’t be the last.
