Defending the Title…

Hello everyone. I’m Logan McElroy, the Hall Monitor blogger for Peachtree Ridge this year. This is my first article so just bear with me. I am going to recap the frist few games of our young season.

Last year the Lions won a share of the AAAAA State Championship. That means this expectations for this year’s squad are still extremely high. There have been many changes since last year, including our new head coach, Bill Ballard. Coach Ballard came to Peachtree Ridge from Tucker. His career record as a head coach is 53-8 coming into the season. Peachtree Ridge also graduated many seniors from the State Championship squad including DT Cameron Heyward (Ohio State), K Drew Butler (UGA), WR Sidney Haynes (UCF), and QB Zack Graham (Ole Miss).

The Lions kicked off the regular season on August 31 at home against the Shiloh Generals. The Lions won the game 28-0, but in my opinion played a little flat. Though the defense was stout. Shiloh managed only 61 yards of total offense including only 3 passing yards. Junior running back Ronnie Smith also had a phenomminal game, rushing for 55 yards on 7 carries with 3 TD’s. Brandon Davis ran for 100 yards on 14 carries and manage a TD as well.

In Week 2, the Lions squared off against the Grayson Rams. The Rams were a vastly underrated team, but they sure did not play that way. I knew this game was going to be tough from the beginning. Even though the Lions jumped out early, the Rams just ran the ball down our throats all night long. Ian Pemberton is possibly the smallest RB i have ever seen, but boy is he quick. Grayson is very blessed to have him. In the end, Grayson ended up upsetting the defending State Champions 17-14. Turnovers and penalties were detrimental to the Lions.

Week 3 featured the Lions facing cross town rival Collins Hill. The last matchup between these two teams was a nail biter but Collins Hill came out on top. This year, the Lions looked for revenge. Collins Hill came into the game 0-2 and was trying to avoid and 0-3 start. But it was just not meant to be. The Lions came out fighting after the loss to Grayson. The final score was 21-0 but the game really was not all that close. The Lions dominated most of the game, but they still made some stupid mistakes.

Last week, we traveled to South Forsyth to play the 1-2 War Eagles. This was the best game the Lions had played all season. The defense looked solid again as they have most of the season. The Offensive Line really came together and gave QB Asher Clark plenty of time in the pocket. The O-Line has been plagued by some early season-ending injuries to Jesse Garcia and Trevor McBurnett. Overall, the team looked great and the final score was 28-3.

So the Lions have gotten off to a pretty good start to the 2007 campaign. Check back soon for my Peachtree Ridge-Norcross Preview.
