Milton falls to 1-1
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
The Eagles lost their first game of the season friday night to Etowah 10-0. Milton’s rushing attack was shut down early in the ball game, and they could not seem to find any rhythm in their offense all night. Etowah clearly came into the game focusing on shutting down Milton’s running game and succeeded with Milton only averaging 2.2 yards a carry. The passing game was not real sharp for Milton either, but that was not Andrew Matthieson’s fault as he did everything he could to help drives going in the game. Milton is relying on a young offensive line to step up and play varsity football this year, and the first games of the season are a great deal of learning for the inexperienced players. It may take a few more games for the inexperienced offensive lineman to come together and play better football, but the good thing for Milton is these young players can only grow in experience and get better.
On the other side of the ball, Milton’s defense had another solid football game. Drew Collins led the eagles defense again with 9 solo tackles, 5 assist, and one recovered fumble. Etowah put up a quick ten points on the Milton defense in the first quarter, but Milton shut out Etowah for the rest of the game. The defense never showed signs of letting up at any point even when they seemed to be on the field all night. Milton’s offense had six three and outs and forced the defense to make big stops throughout the second half to keep the team in the game. The defense made all the necessary stops, but the offense never came through. The team is moving in the right direction, but their weaknesses were surely exploited last friday. The Eagles offense can explode at any point with Lance Martin and Toney Williams in the backfield along with a solid quarterback, but the offensive line will have to improve. The defense looks stronger than ever and have really seemed to come together as a unit. Milton will be tested next week when they play an athletic Sprayberry team at home next week.

No need to panic, we should have won the game. Two dropped passes, and a flurry of missed calls made the difference.
YES, the O Line needs some tweeks in 1 or 2 places. The DEFENSE looked great and the * KICKING* game was outstanding. These kids are young on the O Line, and will get better. We need some size and we have it , so lets use it
I’d like to see some screens or draws when you face a big D Line. that is one way to slow them up. We will face D Lines just as big, so we need to have a plan to slow them up.
It is tough to stop BIG, but you can mentally slow them down.
Lets get back on the winning side and BEAT Sprayberry !!!

Outstanding job by the defense!
Poor special teams on kickoffs set up both Etowah scores. Perhaps it’s time to let someone else field our kickoffs?
Let’s face it, the coaches waited too long against Etowah’s well prepared defense to abandon the run for the pass. Etowah was expecting the run and got what they wanted.
It would be nice to see just once a fade pass into the corner of the endzone…something every team successfully used against us last year.
Also, let’s let the defense play defense and the offensive players play offense especially the receivers!
Judging by the number of dropped passes by the defensive substitutes at the receiver position it’s clear there’s far too much switching around on offense at key points in the game which clearly does not let anyone get in a comfortable rhythm or lead to much success.
Overall, a pretty gutsy effort against a quality team. A few more passes caught at the right time coupled with some better officiating and it adds up to a Milton win!
Milton 28, Sprayberry 21! Go Eagles!

Milton won’t score 21 points against anyone until or unless they have an athletic QB. With an inexperienced O Line you need someone that can pose a Run / Pass threat. Without that, its “Good night Irene,” as Lee Corso says.

You know what they say about the truth: I hurts but it’ll set you free.
Now you know, if Milton lined up against: Any Gwinnett team with the exception of SG, Duluth or Meadowcreek it would be a sad sad event.
Gutsy efforts, dropped passes, soft linemen, big slow inaccurate QB means you need PLAYAS. Don’t go gettin all full of yourselves b/c of a win against a team nobody in 5A has every heard of “Sprayberry” “Pope” in order to get respect in 5A you gotta beat and/or compete with respectable teams.

Hey Doug boi, Milton won’t line up against any Gwinnett team…the traffic is so bad in Atlanta it would take a week to get to the game! Besides, we’ll take respect in our own region first and worry about those Gwinnett teams another year when their average SAT scores come even close to ours!

Nice comeback, but you didn’t have to go there. I thought all this time we were talking about football?
That is what you were spreading on an earlier note. Two things:
Just like prior years, Milton won’t even make the playoffs in their own region. IF you did, its 1 and done.
I hear the avg SAT Score is rising in Gwinnett Cnty and more and more kids are getting into better schools,…hummm looks like your their SAT scores are getting closer to your afterall.
Back to the Football thing, YOU really need some PLAYAS to win. Tony Williams, from what I see needs to transfer to a Gwinnett team [Collins Hill] is looking for a back like him.
Anyway, I’m looking at your schedule. You’ll lose to the following: Northview, Chat, Roswell, and either or both Cent and/or Alpharetta which means your 5:5 and out of the playoffs.

I doubt those SAT scores are moving into our neighborhood any time soon.
It realy is a moot point here as we all know Milton won’t get to play a Gwinnett school any time soon.
I agree we’ll have a tough time against Roswell and the Hooch. However, I think we’ll prove you wrong against Northview, Centennial and Alpharetta.
Also, it’s pretty clear one of the teams from our region has already beaten one of your Gwinnett favorites and it’s likely at least another will do so as well in the playoffs.
At Milton we’re happy to make a statement in our own region for now and will look forward to the future to take down a Gwinnett team!
