Turner Tumbles Longhorns
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Kelsey Turner trampled the Longhorn defense for 217 yards and 2 touchdowns on just 14 carries as the Blue Devils won 42 -9 at Northcutt Stadium Friday night. He asserted himself as a home run threat every time he touched the ball. Turner had runs of 79, 66, 36 and 24 yards, allowing him to average 15.5 yards per carry. Despite Turner’s impressive statistics this was a team effort. The defense held strong allowing just 9 points this game and averaging 8 points per game. Junior Chris Tanzy had a highlight reel strip in the second quarter, tearing the football from the hands the Kell runner and returning it 71 yards for the score. Senior quarterback Stanley Jennings completed 9 of 13 pass attempts for 135 yards and two touchdowns. The touchdown passes were a 36 yarder to Jeremy Hill in the first quarter, and Junior Vernon White scored his first touchdown as a varsity running back on a one yard run in the first quarter. The Devils controlled the game from start to finish, thanks to consistent play on both sides of the ball. Junior Chase Morgan and Senior Michael Stiles combined to go 6-6 on PAT’s so the kicking seems strong. After two games Marietta’s revamped 3-5 defense has proven strong but will receive a real test next week against Campbell.

GO DEVILS!!! I can’t remember when a Marietta defense was this fast…what they lack in size they make up w/ speed!
It’s going to be fun watching the duo of Turner & Jennings this year…brings back memories of Labrone Mitchell and Travis Zachery.
Campbell should be a test but if Marietta can play the way they have the past 2 weeks, I like their chances. Let’s make it 3-0!!!

That was a really well played game. If the running game holds it together like this, we could go 10 - 0 pretty easily, only if the fans would just be louder.

Most disappointing thing about a great Blue Devil game was the small crowd size, especially for a home opener. Me thinks a great number of ‘fans’ are not real fans and waiting to see if MHS is for real. A lot of people jumped on the band wagon after two championship seasons only to jump off midway through a tough 2006 season (see low attendance for Murray County game last year). I’d like to think that we’ll have a bigger, louder crowd for the Campbell game next Friday. And, where are the students??

A big Blue Devil hug for Mikey Stiles for banging through his first Varsity PAT last night. In fact, his PAT was the only MHS PAT kicked with authority; the others barely limped over the crossbar. They counted but it seems that Stiles should get greater consideration for being the PAT guy. He’s toiled for 4 years. Give him a break. The blocked PAT at Lassiter was not his fault - - bad snap and hold. Hey Friday, you hear me?

our crowd level has been declining the past couple years. we do have students at the game, but its just that theyre too busy engaged in conversation. i swear, during the lassiter game when we got, what 2 fumbles in the 2nd half, only a handful of true football fans noticed. everyone else had their heads turn around. i don’t understand their logic, they pay money to get into a football game but they don’t watch it? whats the point of that? they’re better off saving money and going somewhere else to talk.
oh and we did a “our crowd sucks” chant. : D

Turner’s 217 rushing yards is the most by a MHS runner since Derrick Tinsley ran for 317 in 1997 versus Pope. Tanzy has to be the best all around athlete on the team, with another outstanding performance against Kell (recall last year’s game in which he picked off a Kell pass in overtime to set up the winning MHS field goal..final score 17-14).

Tanzy is not only the best athlete on the football team… He is the best athlete in the school. Turner wont get 217 this week unless we see our linemen get up to the second level on the CHS linebackers. Returners Greg Archibong and Kenyon Jackson always are around the ball but its harder for them to get there if we throw a body on them. Also their safety is one of the hardest hitters in the region but lacks the speed to stick with our receivers. Don’t be surprised to see them try some man to man to allow him to come up and play the run… Do I smell big plays?
