Panthers off to a disappointing start

After what could easily be described as an easy win over Cherokee last year at the Dome, most fans were expecting to see a similar outcome this year. Unfortunately, Cherokee came out much stronger, and it was evident early on that this was going to be a difficult game.

Throughout the entire game our defense looked really solid and wasn’t giving up much yardage. But unfortunately, neither was Cherokee’s. The surprisingly low score of only 10-3 can be attributed to good defensive efforts by both teams. But when it mattered most, late into the 4th quarter, Cherokee’s defense was able to come up with a key interception that pretty much sealed the Panther’s fate.

Despite the disappointing loss, there were a few things I saw that showed potential for the future. First off, after the much loved Robby Davis graduated last year, there were many questions about how well Matt Sweat could take over in the quarterback position. After his strong performance at the Dome, most of these questions have been answered. He came out throwing quite a bit, and hit his target most of the time. Which brings me to my second point: Lantrell Anderson, a junior wide receiver, showed some great hands and made a couple spectacular catches. Every team needs to have one go-to-guy who the quarterback can always count on when he is in a difficult situation. If he keeps playing like has, it seems Anderson could be that guy. Lastly, like I said earlier, our defense held up very strong. Even if we did lose this one, the defense only gave up 10 points. Now all we need is for the offense to start pulling their weight, and Starr’s Mill should win a lot of football games.
