Rough Start for Chiefs XC
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
The Sequoyah Cross Country team has had a bumpy ride these past few weeks as the season began. With the heat index reaching all time highs, it has been nearly impossible for the team to find an adequate time to practice. All after school practices were banned in the county, so the team had to resort to early morning runs before school, and late night workouts on the track.
Although it has been a very rough beginning for the team, I think the running Chiefs have lots of talent waiting to shine through. Having lost twenty plus seniors with the graduating class of 2007, it is needless to say that the team is now full of bright new faces; mostly built of underclassmen.
Sequoyah can turn to its seasoned and experienced runners to lead the way this year, as juniors Katie Simers and Ali Smith and senior captains Morgan Teachey and Abby Carney return to the team. We are also esctatic about our newest addition, Junior Lakeside transfer, Lindsay Marriott. Competition will be tight amongst the girls this season, as the Walton Stage Races on August 25th has already shown. Marriott led the girls in the season 2 mile starter with a time of 14:19, with Morgan and Katie close on her heels with times of 14:57 and 14:59, respectively.
On the boys team, Junior Alex Jahl led the pack with a time of 11:19, Senior captain Alex Roberts with a time of 12:02, closely followed by junior Jon Sylvester at 12:31, and freshman Cody Mallchok with an outstanding time of 12:54.
The Chiefs will be running one of the most exciting meets of the season at the well known Berry course this Saturday for the Clara Bowl Invitational in Rome. We are expecting great things from the running Chiefs this season!
GOOOOOOOO CHIEFS!
