What are your favorite specialty food/cooking stores?

Evening Edge is putting together a list of specialty food markets and gourmet cookware stores around Atlanta that are great resources for cooks.

I’ve got favorite places to buy hard-to-find items, or meats raised without antibiotics or hormones, or frozen cheese straw dough that’s as good as what I make from scratch. There are gourmet stores packed with equipment for serious cooks, such as Cook’s Warehouse and Sur la Table at Perimeter Mall, and ones that focus more on fun entertaining accessories, such as Swoozie’s.

If I wanted a wider range of Asian ingredients than I’d find at a mainstream grocer, I’d head to one of Super H Mart’s four metro locations. For British food or specialties from Australia, I’d go to Taste of Britain in Norcross. A co-worker is especially fond of El Valu, with stores in Smyrna and on Buford Highway, for a deep selection of Hispanic items, from Mexico to Argentina.

What are some of your favorite specialty markets that you’d like to share with other Atlanta cooks? Let us know about them here and we’ll try to work them into our directory.

For Australian baked goods I go to the Australian Bakery in East Atlanta.

they may not be considered “high” end by serious cooks but we are lucky enough to have a Fresh Market almost across the street from the main entrance to our subdivision which has all but eliminated our restaurant-going over the last four years. that’s actually more about kids and sitters than $ but either way we haven’t had to give up fine dining.

DeKalb Farmer’s Market in Decatur is a wonderful place that has about everything I want.

Whole Foods has things I can’t get anywhere else. I eat lunch there sometimes on Sunday.

Sometimes, I get a vegetable plate and then put something on the grill for the rest of the meal.

The Dessert, BBQ, Cheese, Olive, and Salad Bars are perfect for 1-2 servings of a favorite food.

Unfortunately I do not live anywhere near the DeKalb Farmers Market. But I do live near a Fresh Market and sort of near Trader Joe’s. Once in a while I will pick up something for dinner as I pass by TFM on my way home from work. I like their rotisserie chicken salad and some of their other salads. Trader Joe’s - not so much. I’ve tried a couple of their frozen entrees but have not found them anything terrific to warrant the trip. Not being crazy about cooking or going out, my favorite thing is just to buy a meal at my fave Asian or Italian resto and divide it into two lunches and get jealous glares from co-workers.

I’ve found that Patton’s Meat Market in Duluth is the best for fresh cut Steak, chicken, pork and fish. They carry Certified Angus brand beef, which you can’t find at grocery stores. They cut any way that I request for my recipes.

Target is a good store to get neat, funky and unique stuff. The Pottery Barn, Crate and Barrel, Hobby Lobby, Real Deals in Jefferson and interestingly enough - the magazine abc distributing offers some niftly little items.

The Douglasville Retail Meat and Smokehouse. They make their own sausage, sell incredibly good steak, smoke their own jerky, have great desserts, and I HIGHLY recommend their sage dressing stuffed pork chops—pop in the oven and 45 minutes later you’ve got a gourmet dinner and the house smells amazing…

Patak’s seems to be a well kept secret for die-hard sausage and processed meat fans. It specializes in Polish meats but I think it has a small variety of other european specialties. I think its in West Cobb, pretty well hidden too, but worth the drive.

Chef Fu Chi at our neighborhood Chinese eaterie told me he buys all of his meats from an associate of his, who works at the animal shelter. I can’t figure out why someone who wholesales meat would want to work a 2nd job at the animal shelter.

Star Provisions on Howell Mill has a good selection of high end cured meats, steaks, seafood and other foodie supplies. I buy my grits and sea salts there.

Great sandwich counter/take away for lunch.

Elizabeth,

I am curious - where do you buy frozen cheese straw dough that is good as you can make from scratch? I would like to try some!

Return to Eden is a vegetarian grocery that has some amazing things. It’s also locally owned and operated, and the people who work there actually know their products. They offer various tours of the store geared towards special dietary needs, such as gluten-free. For example, I asked for a personal tour for “things my picky daughter who needs more healthy calories will eat”. I had 30 minutes one-on-one time with Jodi, who was a lot of fun and had some great ideas for me.

Try Buford Farmers Market on Buford Hwy near 285. Great seafood selection, sushi grade even, tons of meat, Korean and Japanese products, great produce.

Whole Paycheck. There is no better place to go when you’re in the mood for a $5.00 artichoke or a $3.00 roll of toilet paper.

I really miss Harris Teeter. Losing that chain in Atlanta hurt.

Patak is great for meat.

I can always find interesting foods and a great selection of wines and tea at Cost Plus World Market.
