Falcons should keep Milloy around

And now for the Tuesday Countdown:

10 - The roster makeover in Flowery Branch this off-season won’t quite leave the smell of napalm that last year’s did. And yes, some moves in order: Keith Brooking works hard and cares deeply but doesn’t have it any more. Michael Boley’s play declined, won’t be worth the money he wants it free agency and, oh yes, has that little charge of battery on his wife hanging over his head. But Lawyer Milloy? Hold everything …

9 - Milloy was a physical wreck by the end of the season. His legs obviously don’t work like they used it. The Falcons need more speed on the defensive side of the ball. But this is one case where leadership and resolve compensate for age (35) and deteriorating skills. There should be a place for him somewhere on this roster. Young players follow him like a coach on the field, and the defense wouldn’t have been nearly as opportunistic this season without him.

8 - And by the way: The belief all along was that Milloy wanted to finish his career in Seattle (he grew up in the Northwest and attended Washington). But if you’re him, would you rather go to the Seahawks right now, given the direction of that franchise, or stay here, given the direction of this one?

7 - Give Thrashers coach John Anderson points for honesty, clarity and humor. This might be the greatest post-game quote I’ve ever seen: “Our give-a-crap level was like at zero.”

6 - If only for his recruiting skills, Rodney Garner is the single most important coach employed by Georgia not named Mark Richt. Losing him to Tennessee would have been a huge blow. But chances are that one day, he’ll get a head coaching offer.

5 - I might be totally wrong about this but I don’t think a projection about where Matthew Stafford might go in the draft - first, third, seventh, whatever - has any impact on his decision. For some kids, the decision is pure financial (and there’s nothing wrong with that). But Stafford doesn’t have a crying financial need now and I don’t sense it’s the end-all, be-all for him. Really what it comes down to is this: Does he want to continue playing college ball for one more year?

4 - Is Gene DeFilippo a short-sighted blowhard, or just the first athletic director with an iron set of … well, you know. I think the latter.

3 - DeFilippo is the athletic director at Boston College who appears on the verge of firing his football coach, Jeff Jagodzinski, for interviewing for the New York Jets job. There’s conflicting reports about whether there’s a clause in Jagodzinski’s contract prohibiting him from interviewing for an NFL opening in his first seasons (he has coached two). But at the very least, it seems there was an understanding between the two parties that the coach would stay for at least three years. So now DeFilippo is upset that Jagodzinski is breaking that promise and may have lied about his interest in the Jets’ job. Frankly, I don’t blame him, and job-hopping by college coaches has long since gotten out of hand.

2 - The Hawks have won 10 of their last 12 and the only losses in that span came by three points to Boston and two points at New Jersey. OK. I’m starting to think this isn’t just a phase.

1 - Close your eyes, Bulldogs: Florida 41, Oklahoma 27.

As usual, totally agree with you Jeff about keeping Lawyer Milloy around…he’s older than Brooking but when healthy, plays at a higher level & his leadership & hustle is invaluable! Especially if we lose Brooking, we will need Milloy along with Abe to steer the defense. Boley is a shell of his former self, what’s with the weight loss?? Hmmmm…Brooking is a great guy & will be missed for his team 1st attitude but his play this year was just awful, no getting around it. Except for a tight end on offense, all of our needs are defensive. If they draft a wide receiver, I will scream!!!

The Hawks? THE HAWKS? Dont talk about the Hawks.

We have to get even for the Wildcard. It’s not even 72 hours ago. It’s not cold yet. Maybe we can resusitate. Cant we protest the game. The refs were cheating. The fans threw beercans on the field. There was a streaker. It wasn’t our fault!

Why? Why did we lose?

why…why..WHY? ..WHY WHY WHY

Great article JS. I agree totally regarding keeping the Lawyer around. We love you Keith, but it’s time to go. I don’t know if I’m just pariniod but I think we could also use a veteran backup QB. The way the offensive line looked Saturday scared me. In order to continue being successful starts with being healthy. I love Redman and of course Shockley but they are no Matt Ryan!

As for the comment on Keith Brooking, I totally agree. He’s on the Decline and is just collecting a fat paycheck. He doesn’t won’t to punish his will on anyone, unlike a real linebacker like Ray Lewis, yes he must go and maybe we can acquire someone like Ray!!!!

Keith Brooking - Thank you for all you’ve done for the ATL Falcons sir, you will be in the ring of honor once you retire. Which should be very soon. Very very soon.

Milloy should stay, but that shouldn’t stop the Falcons for looking for that next impact SS player in the draft. Maybe start grooming someone to take over.

Dream scenario in the draft…Taylor Mayes from USC on the Falcons, Milloy can stay 1 more season and pass on his knowledge and be a good role model.

Hey Jeff, Your insight about the Falcons is dead-on. Milloy may be getting old but his practice habits and leadership qualities can’t be replaced. Brooking’s my guy (East Coweta alum), but his position requires a little more speed & strength. Stafford SHOULD leave, his time at UGA is up, hitch the wagon to Aaron Murray, he’ll get us the National Championship and I totally understand Coach G’s logic, Kiffin’s the guru of Defensive football, don’t worry Dawg Nation, you still have to have the personnel to play the “Tampa Two” system. Don’t be surprised if the NHL relocates our hockey team, AGAIN.Love what BC’s AD is doing, hope this becomes a trend in D-1. Hawks will be Eastern conference finalist, if they can get Josh Smith to understand his role. No more errant 3’s, and to play on the blocks, down low.

Glad to see the kudos for Brooking. I agree it is likely time for him to retire or maybe more of a supporting role, but he has put it out there for the Falcons and deserves some respect.

Just really happy that the head folks for the Falcons aren’t looking at the roster and saying “What do we do now?” I think we are in for the long run with this leadership.

DeFilippo is an idiot. If his coach wants to interview for an NFL job (a job he’s not going to get), so what? Jagodzinski has coached in the pros before and figures that an interview for an NFL head coaching job will elevate his overall status as a coach. I actually think an interview makes BC look better to potential recruits. After all, if I’m a top recruit, don’t I want to play for a guy that the NFL seems to think highly of? That coach might be able to help me make it in the pros.

I just think it’s ridiculous that an AD would act like that. What if a school with a better athletics program wanted to interview him for its AD job? I bet DeFilippo would go to the interview.

JS- I agree about the Hawks. And Marvin Williams seems to have moved to another level. The difference with this team is their ability to (most times) defend in the fourth quarter and make 3 point shots. Bibby especially. I still would like to see Marvin be more of a scoring option as well as Horford.

If the Hawks are winning because they go out of the paint late, then they will go 2-11 for the same reason soon.

You cant rely on the late threes. You morons dont know any more about basketball than you do about football.

I seldom disagree with you, but DB’s make their presence known by their speed, and Malloy has lost some of him. 35 is pretty old for a DB anyway, most successful veterans start using tricks as they get older. In Malloy’s case, I think the way he’s been exposed at the end of the season is going to make his success a lot more difficult to attain.

We need a new safety. Milloy still shows a lot in stopping the run, but he’s not effective at pass coverage. If his leadership is that important to the team, keep him on and bring in someone to help him out. Brooking has been a long-time favorite, but he’s not effective now — matter of fact, the team seems to be a little short in linebackers, period. Brooking needs to go — Boley too. The Falcons need some monsters, through free agency or draft, at linebacker. I don’t know why people want to give J. Anderson another year to develop; I think it’s pretty clear he’s not going to be the pass-rusher the Falcons thought they were getting, so he needs to go. Unfortunately, the Falcons can’t sell out on defense. They really need to shore up the offensive line as well. We need a little more meat, youth, and speed on the offensive line (I’m sure we were all pretty dismayed at how the Falcons’ offensive line was dominated by Arizona). So, my wish list: 2 Tasmanian Devils for linebackers, 1 fast, brutal safety to spell Milloy, another shredder to play opposite Abraham on the D-line, and two young man-handlers to put in front of Ryan. All of that and some wise late draft choices to build depth. Might be tough to pull off, but let’s see Dimitroff earn his pay and accolades …

I agree with you, Erica-Nicole on the Hawks. If they had one dominant force in the paint - a Shaqish player in stature but not attitude - they would be a serious title contender, but they do seem to rely on hot shooting from the outside, which will likely only get you through a round or two of playoffs.

Much respect for Brooking but cannot get it done. I am torn on Milloy as how much cap room will he take. I agree with the poster on the Mays kid. He is a beast. Might could get Marks from Auburn in the second round as I don’t know how much Grady has left.

That is the best post game quote i’ve heard. Im not a hockey fan far from it, but from a competitve stance that was funny and sad.

Keep Milloy, He was a hitter out there on Defense. LB’s must be better and a different scheme such as a jim johnson style D….

By saint

With all that Milloy has going for him, except speed, would he want to want to play second fiddle to a another top-quality safety? If his lack of speed is due to age-related fatigue, he could be spelled, but I sure don’t want to see those receivers blowing by him. We would have to get an established free agent safety, not some guy who is fast, but needs a couple of years of OJT.

We should trade all our current DBs to Balitmore for Ed Reed. He can handle it back there by himself.

Lets use Milloy at Bolley’s LB spot. He hits and plays like a linebacker anyway. Lawdog has lost a step but not intensity. He has enough size (only 6 pounds lighter than Boley) and grit and he’ll lay the wood; to play Lb. He still has enough speed to cover backs and TE out of the backfield. And we don’t have a leader on this team that is more effective and inspiring to the other players. I don’t think he has the skills or mostly speed to continue as our SS. This may not be something he’d sign off on but could be a very good move IMO.

I like Milloy a lot, especially the role he played this year, but I think if we can pick up a couple of class veterans with more game left to take on leadership roles in the defense we’ll be better off in both the short and the long run than if we extend Lawyer for several more seasons of decline. He has meant a lot to this team and has been invaluable this season, but despite our “miracle turnaround” or whatever it’s important to realize that this is still a rebuilding franchise and the focus is and should be on youth, production and character; of late, Milloy only seems to have an excess of the latter.

The guy deserves to be remembered for something other than that. I say we keep Milloy for leadership. Those guys still need a battle tested vet back there. Nice article. I believe there should be roster spots for Milloy and Brooking for sure. We need an incumbent for their positions and they have the experience to teach a young mind how the game and position is played. My question is this….. Do the Falcons have any hope of trading Vick for some quality draft picks or maybe an above average player? And also, do you see the Falcons trying to draft Tim Tebow and teach him the Tight End position? He could also be the third string quarterback if there are injuries. He could soak up 2 roster spots and allow for another body in an important position. Another question is do you see the Falcons going after an older back up quarterback to help mentor Matt Ryan and DJ Shockley? Let’s face it, Redman should get an opportunity to go to a program like Detroit, Seattle, or Oakland and compete for a starting job. He is a pretty decent QB that could help a struggling franchise groom a young QB out of the draft, take some snaps, get the offense ready for the QB of the future.

Dahl is a good lineman. They are always in short supply. But he needs to be “rode herd on” by the coaches next year. If he does not see the light, bye. We won’t miss Boley. And that is hard to believe just a short 2 seasons ago. He had the maKINGS OF AN ALL-pRO LB. aND THANKS k. Brooking, you gave the team and the fans all you had all the time. I would always want to keep leaders in the locker room. If there is space Milloy would be on my team.

Better keep Foxworth. Too many changes on any part of the team and there will be no 11-5 next year. Teams developm with quality experience and commitment to fundamental football. Coaches mess stuff up by too many changes, and displaying the inability to coach players on sound principles. There is no such thing as a franchise player. Every player has key roles in team development and winning, and when you trade here, release there, it throwos things off from the base that you had. Keeping Foxworth is a win/win because he has the moxey and smarts to take care of his business in the secondary. He is unrestricted, so it will cost them some, but if they don’t sign him others will. Who plays back there them. Grimes? Jackson? A rookie? I can see the smoke now, as Foxworth can shut down his side as he did against all the big boys in Minnesota, Orleans, tampa and AZ. Charles1

They need to sign Andruw Jones for the D-line, and have a one-two combination with him and Grady Jackson, like the two Williams up in Minnesota.

He brings as much bulk as Jackson, and he has much better hands. And he’s salary cap friendly, because the Dodgers will pay most of it.

Poppa Falcon is right. Jamaal Anderson is a bright kid, but he’s not fast like Kerney or Abe. Fatten him up, keep him on the muscle building machines this offseason, and move his slower motor to DT. We’ve paid for his learning phase, meaning one less player needing to learn our defensive playbook. Gravy isn’t going to last forever so the time is now.

I’m torn about Milloy and Brooking. TD comes from a program that cut folks a year earlier than you’d expect, before any decline. Conversely, these are the team leaders voted by the team to rep the defense.

Keith, dude, can you coach? (Maybe BVG will get a better offer.) We love you, but you aren’t the pro bowler (never Kyle Boller ;-) any more. Milloy? I’d defer to the coaching staff on that one because clearly you see him firing up the team better than Perp Squalk (Ray Lewis.)

Are there any JAGs who know the concepts that are trade bait or FA? Lofton & Chevis look like gamers in the making. Does Asamungha (sp?) want to leave Al Davis to play for a rational owner?

The reason Milloy is beat up is coming up and filling all the gaps the linebackers couldn’t fill themselves. He played his position and covered all 3 linebackers rear ends all season. The reason he got beat twice in AZ was he was too busy trying to cover for Brooking, Boley, et al. Draft line backers, Ray Lewis is a free agent. Keep Milloy and use the Brooking/Boley money to get Ray…We win

thousands of people have been saying get rid of Brooking for years. Not only one person. LOL Yet we all agree that we appreciate what he did, on and off the field. The guy is a class act. No doubt about it. But it’s time to go. He’ll sign elsewhere, and do what most people past their prime do…waste away the last 2 or 3 years playing like garbage…little playing time…wishing they would have retired when they should have. The biggest need, IMO, is another pass rusher on the outside, one safety, and a stud OLB. I like Wire…he plays his ^ss off!!! Lofton will be a good one in the middle. Get a stud outside and ATL is set there. Put about 20 pounds of muscle on Jamal Anderson and let him play DT on rotations. Develop Biermann behind Abraham. Get that hard hitting safety that covers the field and the defense is set. I like our CBs as long as we bring back Foxworth. DEFINITELY add one or two big bodies to develop on the O-line. LUckily, some of this will be taken care of via Free Agency so not every player has to be “developed”. Hopefully one OL and the OLB via free agency would be perfect!!

I love both Milloy and Brooking but it is time to move on from both. First two key free agent moves we would be to acquire SS/FS Oshiomogho Atogwe from STL and CB Nmandi Asomugha from OAK. This would provide leadership and immediate depth to the secondary and LB corps. Asomugha and Foxworth would make a nice CB tandem with Houston/Jackson in the nickel role. Use two of the first three draft picks on a pair of OLBs that can actually augment the pass defense as well as play the run. Luckily, this draft is stacked well with them. Two that I love are Clint Sintim of Virginia and Marcus Freeman of Ohio State. Both are fast, very athletic, and play both the run and pass WELL. TE could be handled in round three or four wtih the selection of Ryan Purvis from BC. He had excellent chemistry with Ryan a year ago in an NFL-style offense. GO FALCONS.

Braves fans: Allow Smoltz to go and play in front of sell-outs full of true baseball fans. I’m sure it was sickening for him to see Cubs fans more visible and audible than Braves fans at the Ted. Its not about money, he deserves to matter nationally again and to be widely recognized as one of the greatest ever in a real baseball town.

Hawks “fans”: If, and its a big if in these days and times, you have the resources, go to the darn games! The crowds at Phillips Arena are downright embarrassing, much like Braves games. I love my city, but we are atrocious sports fans. It is a miracle this team plays as hard as it does, mainly on the defensive side, when they look up in the stands and the entire top level is empty, not to mention the fact that the only sellouts are because of the opposing team!(Kobe, LeBron, or the Celtics). Dispicable.

Falcons: Are you kidding, Schultz? Did you see the Arizona game? You need new specs. Leadership is worthless when you allow one of the slower, while awesome, recievers to toe the sideline halfway down the field, nor a disgruntled and forgotten back to continually prod through the middle of the field, or a tight end to be all alone in the middle of the field on a season-making or breaking play. I am of the philosophy that 11 guys are accountable on every play, but Milloy’s faults shine too bright. I like the guy, but along with Brooking, have to easily be the slowest, athletically declined duo of veteran, multiple All-Pro secondary players in the league (neck-and-neck with Brooks and Barber). And what is this oppurtunistic defense you speak of? I don’t know the numbers, but I am willing to bet the Falcons ranked near the rock bottom in passes defended/ tipped. If Milloy returns as a starter and pass coverer, I will be considerably heated.
On another note, I’m still on my fans trip. Please implore the fans next year, as much as possible, in every editorial, to MAKE IT ON TIME FOR THE KICKOFF, AND STAY THEIR BUTTS IN THE SEATS FOR THE ENDING GUN, WIN OR LOSE! STOP BEING FASHIONABLE CHUMPS!!! IT MAKES ME SICK!!!

As someone who was born and raised in Atlanta, I have, and never will, understand the fascination and phenomenon that is Georgia Football. Maybe I’m too young (27) to remember when there weren’t any professional franchises in Atlanta. Is there something wrong with me, or are Georgia fanatics “culturally challenged?” I’ve been to Athens once in my life, and hope to never go back.

Can Chevis Jackson play safety? If Foxworth gets resigned and Higgens comes back, team should have enough corners to move Jackson and save pick/free agent.

Keith Brooking has got to go! Can’t everyone else see how slow he is. He misses tackles and only jumps on the pile after everyone is there first. He cost us that last playoff game. Please, Please let him go today!

What the falcons need to do is go after Julius Peppers who is a UFA. That will give us two great pass rushers on the ends and we can use jamal anderson to spell abraham. We also need to find some LB’s and safety’s and cb’s.DRAFT DEFENSE! We could also use one more OL towards the middle rounds of the draft.Just my thoughts.

TD and MS need to go ahead and ink foxworth and keonen and resign milloy to a one year deal to bring along a young draft pick at SS…brooking has seen his last days in a uniform and needs to become a coach…asoumgua from oakland and peppers will dramatically improve the defense and maybe pack some meat onto anderson and try him at DT its worth a shot cause he sucks at DE i put my faith in Dimitrof and Smith they did a hell of a job this past offseason and i believe they will show everyone they can do it again

I say get rid of Milloy, he is getting too old and has garbage he needs to address (DUI). Everyone forgets about Erik Coleman who came to this team as a natural leader. He is a good example for the younger defensive backs and is proving himself on the field. He is a good candidate to take over as role model.

Brookings will always be a Falcon and we appreciate all that he has done for the team, but his time has come and is gone.

Boley appears to have too much personal drama, Coy has done a great job when he was put in.

DON’T EVEN TALK TO PEPPERS! What is this junk about Peppers! Dimitroff is too smart a football mind to even consider this guy. Super overrated, poor lane discipline, poor run-defender. Poor angle-taker. He over-pursues and is forced beyond the QB too much. Way overpriced. Also is injury-prone. Had a great game against Arizona, didn’t he? There are games where you didn’t even know the guy was on the field. Stay away from this guy at all costs!
