This wasn’t how the Falcons’ story was supposed to end
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Glendale, Ariz. — This was the team you expected in September. The team before the unlikely metamorphosis, the one before the rookie quarterback and the unassuming coach and the beleaguered owner who really would’ve settled for a little peace and quiet and maybe two Tylenol somehow became the NFL’s feel good story.
They couldn’t block. They couldn’t run. They couldn’t defend. The rookie of the year quarterback looked, well, just the rookie part. Penalties. Turnovers. Maybe even a little stage fright.
Everything you expected for 16 games? It showed up in the 17th. In their first playoff appearance in four years, the Falcons lost to Arizona, 30-24.
Feeling a little unsatisfied? You should. This isn’t the time for polite exit applause.
“There’s not a lot of positives right now,” said Keith Brooking, who played on a Super Bowl team as a rookie and knows better than anyone about limited windows of opportunity. “I feel like I’ve been stabbed in the heart. Losers look at things like, ‘Well, we turned it around. We went 11-5.’ That’s not the way I look at things.”
You think, “But the future looks great.” But do you ever really know? In 2004, the Falcons reached the NFC title game against Philadelphia with a rookie coach (Jim Mora) and a highlight reel of a quarterback (Michael Vick). Then the sinkhole opened. That was the franchise’s last postseason appearance before Saturday.
Coach Mike Smith has referenced “the process” after every game. Who figured after so many improbable moments that the process’s ugly stepsister finally would show up.
Matt Ryan’s first regular season pass was a touchdown. His first playoff pass was an interception. The season and the playoff followed accordingly.
This was Ryan’s 21st game (including exhibitions), which is nine more than a typical college season. It showed. He missed receivers. He forced passes into coverage. He sometimes didn’t react well to Arizona’s pass rush, which was constant because the Falcons couldn’t run. He completed 26-of-40 passes, was intercepted twice and sacked three times.
Ryan again denied hitting a wall or hiding an injury. (“I felt fine. I felt the same as I have all year,” he said.)
If he was being truthful, then opposing defenses simply found a gear that Ryan wasn’t ready for.
He wasn’t the same quarterback in the last four weeks. His reactions showed it and the numbers confirm it. He had 14 touchdowns and seven interceptions in the first 13 games, but four touchdowns and six interceptions in the last four.
He also was sacked seven times in the last four games after being dropped once in the previous five. Part of that is protection. But it’s also pocket awareness.
“I think he’d like to have some throws back,” Smith said. “But this is a new experience for him and it’s a new experience for our football team.”
The Falcons were punched in the mouth. It’s not that they backed down. They just seldom had much of a counter.
After a dreadful start, they put together a few nice drives near the end of the half, capitalized on a turnover and somehow held a 17-14 lead at the break.
Then came the self-immolation. On the second offensive play of the second half, Ryan’s handoff never made it to Michael Turner. The ball hit Turner’s elbow as Arizona’s Darnell Dockett was in his face and popped loose. Antrel Rolle picked up the fumble and returned it 27 yards for a touchdown. Arizona took the lead, and that was it. The Falcons next five possessions: punt-punt-interception-punt-safety.
This was not the solid, controlled team we saw most of the season. But, really, nobody in the Falcons’ locker room wanted to talk about that team, anyway.
“Fans were ready to give us a pat on the back no matter what happened, because of last year,” Lawyer Milloy said. “We fought through the preseason when people were overlooking us. We fought through us just being just a sympathy story until people said, ‘These guys are for real.’ But that’s why this hurts so bad. You never know what’s going to happen with a team. You can’t anticipate how a team will gel.”
For 16 games, we forget what they were supposed to be. One game reminded us.

While Ryan made some mistakes I do not lay the blame of this loss on him. He led the Falcons back in the 2nd quarter from a 14-3 deficit to take the lead as well as giving us a chance in the fourth quarter.
The Cardinals D-line seemed to be jumping the snap count all night and the fumble return for a TD was the difference in the game. Overall a great season but the defense definitely needs upgrading, along with a tightend and another solid O-lineman. The Falcons are truly headed in the right direction.

I am disappointed, but what a great season. Hope Dimitroff drafts ALL defensive players, and makes some strong offseason acquisition. Please note-all 3 linebackers for the Ravens are UFA…..would love to have one of them to make us a smash-mouth defense….
Not whining, but how many times was Ar offsides tonight?? It was called TWICE…..
What really hurts is we are better team than Ar…just not tonight……

Such is life. The future is bright, so let’s keep our heads up. It could be worse. Willie Martinez could be the DC.

Just not quite ready for prime time. Some guys seemed to just disappear. Ryan to White was pretty much the whole offense. Michael Turner got no creases, but when he got outside, he went down too easy. Bottom line, Falcons need to work on upgrading the defensive and offensive lines in the offseason. A year of experience and a taste of postseason style ball should help the young guys.

Keith Brooking is to the Falcons what Kari Letemin is to the Loseland Toiletlids (Thrashers). A big fat liability! I hate both the untalented sons of betches.

Did Lawyer Milloy look a lot like Eugene Robinson from the Super Bowl today or was it just me? I am glad this happened today. Now that we were exposed, maybe the problems can be corrected in the draft. We need to start focusing on the draft and getting new bodies on here.
How about Geno Atkins from UGA late in the first round. He is a man child that can stop the run and rush the passer?!

Great Season for the Falcons. I hope Keith Brookings retires. He was a great player but that final 1st down for Cardinals demonstrated the need for new talent. We love you Keith but that was a dagger to the heart.

Some sports wag was suggesting that they flip Abraham to the other side and rush against Brown, who’s been horrible, and create a huge mismatch.
Did they do that? Giants did a great job of creating mismatches in the Super Bowl; maybe a couple of sacks could have been game changers.

let’s see, someone from the journal-consitpation wrote a few days ago that ‘if you have to play a game in january, in someone elses stadium, you pray that it’s in arizona.’
i am now wondering…what else are you going to pray for now?
you just got outplayed, outmanned and OUT SCORED…be careful what you pray for…you just might get it!!!

I agree that what really stinks is that Arizona was not the team the Falcons were “supposed” to lose to in the playoffs. I sensed that they were better than that and, frankly, we all came to believe that the Falcons would win this one. Maybe more than a little of the problem today was that the Falcons, themselves, just didn’t think they would/could lose today. I do feel unsatisfied and I, too, know that opportunities like this in the NFL can be few and far between. The Falcons won’t have the terrible NFC West, Detroit and the Rams to kick around next year.

Give it a break, Schultz. While the Falcons’ play was disappointing today, the suggestion that the past several years are somehow an indicator of the future is just a bogus argument. Look at the Giants and Patriots. The Giants made the playoffs and lost a for the couple of years before winning the Super Bowl last year. The Patriots won their first in 2001 after making the playoffs a few years in the late 90s and not winning it all.
While what you suggest is always possible, it’s really not that likely if the first year of Thomas Dimitroff’s tenure is any indication of his ability to manage an NFL franchise. He made a very solid pick in a new head coach by hiring Mike Smith (and didn’t just go grab a hot name being tossed around by sportswriters) and his first draft produced Matt Ryan and several other quality players.
Again, maybe it’s a fluke and the Falcons won’t have a run like other well-managed NFL franchises tend to, but so far, there’s no evidence that is the case.
While maybe being provocative has let you stay on the AJC payroll while lots of your colleagues have gotten the ax, you ought to at least write something with analysis deep enough that it distinguishes you from knee jerk blog commenters who go from worshiping Smith and Ryan to writing “same old Falcons” because of one game.

Jeff Schultz - you are pathetic. Just trying to sell a few papers. The Falcons had a great year. Yes, the last game was disappointing. Yes, we all hoped and most of us expected to win this game. Problem is, the other team is a pro team that’s also in the playoffs. You are just trying to stir the pot. You’re a second-rate reporter working for a third rate paper. Get a life.

I couldn’t disagree with this column more.
“This wasn’t how the Falcons’ story was supposed to end?” Why not? Picked by many to win between one and five games, they won 11 and had to play a road playoff game. The story was supposed to end as soon as they committed to Ryan in Game #1, remember?
For the players, I would expect—no, I would want them to feel the pain of a playoff loss. But for fans, what’s wrong with polite exit applause? There’s finally some hope and direction to this organization. They lost a winnable game today, true, but they got manhandled up front, didn’t get any breaks, and still came within a defensive stop of a potential game-winning TD drive. They got punched in the mouth early and often and got up off the deck. What Falcons’ teams could we say that about? I mean, come on. They “seldom” had a counter? They were down 11 and came back to take the lead. They were down 13 late and came back with another TD.
Perhaps things would’ve been different if two of the oldest Falcons and team leaders—Brooking and Milloy—hadn’t been caught out of position. And said as much. Or managed to get a 3rd down stop in the 3rd quarter. Or caught the ball (White dropped two, Jenkins one). Ryan didn’t play great, but we were still in a position to win a road playoff game with 4 minutes left. He deserves credit for that, especially since we couldn’t run the ball at all.
Of course you never really know what the future holds (see: Vick, Michael). But if there isn’t room for optimism now, when are we allowed? Only during championship seasons? Your standards are inanely high then.
Carping about ‘pocket awareness’ after THAT game today? See Vick, Michael, then get back to me. That’s absurd. An 18-13 TD/INT split for a rookie…and you criticize a regression. As if the variables in judging a regression didn’t change, i.e. better defenses? Worse protection? Bad routes?
I’m not looking for excuses, but blanket judgments seem to me to be intellectually lazy.
The Cardinals played better today. Maybe we beat them 3 out of 5 times, but today they made more plays. Can we not acknowledge that without throwing the home team under a bus? Or is that part of the job description?
As if winning a road playoff game isn’t difficult? Care to look at Manning and the hottest team in the league against a team the Falcons beat tonight?
You can’t in one breath intimate that we got more out of this team in 16 games—“Everything you expected for 16 games?”—and in the next breath rail against those of us who do in fact see a silver lining in an organization that was left for dead a year ago.
It’s called growth. Isn’t that part of a vocabulary we want to be using for a change?

A great game. Clearly the better team this afternoon was the Cardinals. The vaunted Falcons running game was nonexistent. The dreaded pass rush was nowhere to be found.
A huge motivator for the fans (and according to Coach Whis, the team) was the quote attributed to the AJC that Falcon fans should pray that their first playoff game would be against Arizona.
Thanks for the Bulletin Board material, Atlanta. Good luck next year.

Keith Brooking … exposed again! He’s a total liability.
Milloy was about two to three steps behind in coverage.
Abraham had his a** handed to him today.
The offense was alright, I wish Norwood would have been used more to change up the pace. Ryan could have played a little better but I put the loss on the Defense because they had opportunities to hold, thus giving the offense another chance but the D couldn’t hold.
Overall, the Falcons had an overachieving year and hopefully they can continue to build on the successes & failures of this season.

No wonder we were a wild card.
Where was Keith Brooking? I didn’t see him in this game- at all. He had his head in the sand the whole game.
Keith is a player past his prime and who is holding on to his Atlanta roots, but sadly they’ve dried up.
Atlanta needs a real football team to play in the DOME.
The falcons should move to Brunswick and become the Brunswick Falcons.

Another point - the fact that the 8-8 Chargers were able to beat th 12-4 Colts even with an injured LaDanian Tomlinson shows the importance of home field in the playoffs. Teams that have to play on the road sometimes pull it off (the Giants last year) but home field is a big advantage in the playoffs.
When Mike Smith talks about “process” with a young team, maybe he’s talking about not losing games you should win (like against the Broncos) and getting a bye week and at least one home game (which is what would have happened if the Falcons had won that game). Now that this team and young players like Ryan, Lofton, Jackson and White have gotten a taste of a real shot at a Super Bowl (and have more experience playing with real pressure) they are very likely to be a stronger contender next year and in the future.

Cut Ryan some slack; he’s a rookie and it showed a bit tonight but as bad as he played this has to be laid at the door of the Atlanta Defense. If you score 24 points in the NFL you should win playoff football games. We still had a chance to win had the defense got the ball back with about 2 minutes to go. We’ll never know now. Let’s rebuild the offensive and defensive lines and get some people in here who know how to freaking block and stop a washed up running back. One silver lining. We end the season this year without our starting QB in jail and a sorry puke of a coach bolting for a college in Arkansas. Ryan and Smith are great substitutes for the pukes we had last year. Let’s be proud of what we accomplished; some older players need to either step up or move aside; it’s time to move FORWARD and make 2009 a second straight playoff appearance. Good season and no matter what happened tonight this was a good football team; not a Super Bowl team as we saw tonight, but a good football team. Heres looking toward 2009.

Unbelievable year, hands down. This was one hell of a ride and it shows how much fun it is to have a good NFL team that is relivent in January. Today was a very tough loss, but the Falcons fought hard. We have some spots on our team that showed where we need help, but we are light years ahead of the curve.
6 -7 more players in the Draft, 2-3 free agents and the core of this team coming back next year makes the offseason something to look forward to. I think everyone who knows this team knows our glaring needs (safety, outside LB, DT, TE, OL depth) and this exactly what Dimitrof will attack for the next 6 months.
We have our QB, WRs, RBs, 4 OL set for a long time on offense which is rock solid. Defense is a glaring need for more talent, but VanGorder worked miracles all year with what he had. Give him some more talent and he we can have a Baltimore type Defense in 1-2 years.
Again, thank you Atlanta Falcons for one HELL of a 2008 and I can’t wait for 2009.

1) Losses by two clubs on the road against teams with vastly inferior records shows that the playoff system needs to be reformatted. If Atlanta and Indy are playing at home (a privilege they earned based on record), these outcomes would almost certainly have been different.
2) Atlanta has never made the playoffs in back to back years. I’m predicting defenses will be much tougher on Ryan next year, and the Falcons take a step back to 7-9 or 8-8 in 2009.

A cardinal walks into a bar and spots a falcon perched on top of Jeff Schultz’s shoulder. The cardinal then procedes to hand the falcon his @ss.
The falcon says “It wasn’t supposed to end this way,” and the cardinal says “Yeah, you’re right.” and proceeds to take a giant dump on Schultz’s head.

Jeff…you picked the most vulnerable Falcon players to affirm your depressing story. Brooking and Milloy’s days in the NFL are numbered after this game…they are sad because this could be THEIR last playoff game. Don’t get me wrong…I hate this loss as much as anyone…but the next draft will go after DEFENSE DEFENSE and more DEFENSE. The offense will be good enough to get to the Super Bowl in the next couple of years…it is the defense that needs to be upgraded. Brooking and Milloy are on the way out. Ryan didn’t lose this game today…AZ played like the team that got a 17-3 lead at Carolina earlier this season…and the Falcons couldn’t stop the run.

I agree with Shultz-who knows if they will even get to the playoffs next year or the next. This was a wasted opportunity and that is how it should be seen. Sure expectations were low. I predicted 4 wins. I am thrilled to be wrong about that. But when you get a bite at the cake, you need to take advantage of it. This was an unusual year. Indy and New England are out already. The Giants are beatable. Falcons already dismembered the Panthers. We were set up for a run of some kind and choked . Simple as that. Over. Now we focus on the draft and free agency. But now Dimitroff has an idea who will produce when the chips are down and who won’t.
Truth doesn’t hurt. But it is annoying when u post your 5 inches 3 or 4 times. Read the directions, for crying out loud.
All that said, the Falcons were worth watching this year,a big improvement. Congrats Birds.Somebody has a clue.Always a good start.

That anyone with a lick of sense would call this a “great” year shows just how stupid the “fanbase” is and how pathetic the franchise is. A wildcard + one & done does NOT = “great.”
A clueless dolt-owner + a flash-in-the-pan QB. Get set for a losing 2009. Remember, the Flowery Branche buzz-ards have never posted consecutive winning season.

Another pointless column by the master of overwrought hand-wringing, Jeff Schultz!
The Falcons’ season ended precisely as it should have ended. One team wins their last game in the playoffs, all others lose it! That’s reality.
It was you and your fellow scribes, Schultz, who rang in the Super Bowl hysteria because you wanted to drum up interest. Now, you hoist the team upon the petard you created for them.
Hoist yourself upon it!

I don’t care for being a sore loser but seriously, the Cardinals winning today was more of the Falcons beating themselves. If we had a best of 5 or 7 game series the Falcons would win. If you seriously think that the Cardinals are a good football team you are mistaken. They are going to get killed next week in CAR.

Face it, its never going to happen. Atlanta is Loserville. All these people saying what we need is a few more good players. How many times have we heard that? In the 70’s with Bob Lee, with Leeman Bennett, and with Dan Reeves. Guess what for some reason those players never come. Atlanta is cursed as a sports city. Get over it.

We need a dominant left tackle. the Baker kid is a guard or rt tackle at best. not likely to draft one where we will slot this year, but maybe Dimitroff can steal one somewhere.today it was ‘wheres the beef’?

They were getting crowned in the 2nd quarter. By the way Collinsworth, what did you do for the Bungals besides shank the big game ( in case nobody remembers ) against the 49ers. I wanna thank all the true fans and have a great year,we will stick together. The way this team is going , we will dance in january again and again. Hey Falcon fans open your eyes! Anyone who watched the Cardinals this year knew that the Falcons were going to have their hands full with this team.
After 10 games the Cardinals were 7-3 and had clinched the NFC West. On week 11 they lost a heartbreaker to the Giants and in the process clinched a playoff spot. On week 12 Whisenhunt shuts down the team and they go vanilla for the remainder of the regular season until week 17 when they throttle Seattle.
And the Atlanta media falls for the old playing possum trick HOOK - LINE & SINKER.
Face it, the Falcons simply got beat by a more talented more physical and better coached team, Period!

The Falcons just weren’t ready today. I was worried they were talking up the Falcons too much and talking down the Cardinals. I felt the team played hard, but in the playoffs if comes down to which team executes better, and today that was the Cardinals. It’s a different season once the playoff’s begin. Indy was 12-4 and on a 9 game winning streak and they lost to San Diego who barely got into the playoffs at 8-8. If you have a weakness it will get exposed in the playoffs, and that weakness is the defense. Again those guys play hard but they are just outmatched.

Great season Falcons. I don’t see how anyone can complain. Nobody expected them to do much this year. Some of the talking heads had them going winless. The Falcons could have easily won this game. The Cards really only had one drive. The others were two long pass plays and a freak play on a fumble return. That’s the nature of the game. Hats off to the Cards for controing th ball in the second half, Most teams would have run the ball 3 times at the end of the game. It was a great call by the Cards coach putting the ball in the air. Improve where you can next year. Great season guys.

Hey, “Draft Guru,” truth hurts, don’t it? so, get Melvin Kieper’s ding-dong out of your mouth. The facts are that the buzzards have never won anything of note. Not 1 NFL championship. A few crumby playoff games spread over FORTY years don’t amount to a hill of beans. It is also absolute fact that the Atlanta NFL franchise has NEVER posted back-to-back winning season. Yet, a cretin like you wants to herald the 1 & done season as “great.” Compared to other Fulkin meltdowns? Ha — maybe. But not when it comes to comparisons, with Pittsburgh, NE, SF and Dallas. Poor deluded creature. It is you who is obviously “ignorant.” As for “uneducated,” well, go and polish your Phi Beta Kappa key. You do have one, don’t you? Plus a Rolls-Royce. How about a 2 time MVP super Bowl MVP quarterback, ATL or AZ? What about top flight Secondary? All ATL has is some luck and a running back, ya wait till next year when people analyze film and do to Ryan what AZ did today. And if you want to talk about oh AZ was 9-7 and was lucky to get in becuase of a weak division, you’re right the west is weak and we went 6-0, if there was any competition for the division this year we wouldn’t have shut it down after week 10 and not been able to rest players like Bolding and Edge who pretty muych handed it to ATL today.

I watched the game, looked at the stats, I don’t know where you can say the Falcons got “whipped”. 30-24 at home with 7 of those coming on a fluke fumble recovery? Two other TDs coming on a big plays. Not what I’d call a whipping.

Roger Goodell, instead of destroying New England’s tapes, needs to build a better league.
Why does a team that went 9-7 in arguably the worst division of all time get home-field advantage against a team that went 11-5…who plays in probably the best division of all time?
The Cardinals were the better team today, at least, given the venue, and why was that venue Arizona and not Atlanta? Atlanta was CLEARLY the better team this season and proved this reality on a weekly basis.
This format needs to be changed, and the AJC’s (Mark Bradley, for example) giving bulletin-board material needs to change, too.
The Falcons should’ve won today, and they need to get Jerious Norwood more touches. I said before the year that Norwood would run outside the tackles and Michael Turner between them. I pictured many off-balanced defenses and saw them early in the year. As the season progressed, it seems like this team relied less and less on Norwood, and this reality needs to change, as Norwood’s speed and elusivity are formidable and a great accent to Turner’s power-running.
Honestly, this team should’ve gone 13-3, as it shouldn’t have lost to the Broncos or Eagles (throwing that lob pass into the endzone against Philadelphia was TERRIBLE play-calling), but this team indeed had a great regular season and in no way seemed to be a one-year team.
This team has parallels to someone becoming saved. I’m not being sacrilegious. This team has been synonymous with “life” this year after being lost/postmodern for a long time.

The Atlanta Falcons are getting just what they deserve, another losing season. A ten year old can play football better that anyone on this team. Ticket prices have been raised and still they continue to lose. And now the Falcon organization is talking about building a new stadium out in Doraville, no one is going to continue to come see this lose again and again. So go ahead and build your new stadium and hopefully one or two people will come and watch you lose. But then no one may show up if you continue to raise prices.

Reading this makes me laugh. So many people are complaining that the Falcons are the better team and that they handed the game to the Cardinals. In week 15, the Falcons played the Vikings. The Vikings fumbled SEVEN times, and the Falcons still only won that game by a touchdown. But it counts as a win, even though the Vikings were cleary the better team that day. Bottom line; Arizona was better than you today and that’s what matters…deal with it.

“…hurts”—I’m glad you’re not coaching the Falcons, as you’re just as complacent as Bill Parcells is demanding. You think action A’s merit is not intrinsic but instead based upon what happened in the previous year and therefore carries a relativistic value, a wrongful concept.
By the way, let’s talk about what DID happen last year. This team FINALLY cut ties with those who have impeded its progress. On the day Bobby Petrino bolted for Louisville, my interest in this team returned to full form, as I had lost interest from 2004-that point, as the team had carried itself in cheap fashion, such as Alex Gibbs’s blocking techniques.
No more Mora. No more Gibbs. No more Vick. No more Petrino. Contrary to what the “experts” say, this “surprise” year really wasn’t a surprise. (See the last paragraph of my former post.) This team changed directions after the Petrino situation, and brought in discerning, sound-minded (not broad-minded—disorganized, contradictory) individuals who led this team in the opposite direction.
This change in direction led to a change in results, and Matt Ryan played exactly the kind of football that Michael Vick stopped playing basically after the 2003 season. (He really only had one more great game: the December 2004 Carolina game in Atlanta.)
This team should be more than fine, and I reiterate an earlier point: The four division winners should not get the top four seeds automatically, or if they do, concede home-field to lower-seeded teams with better records, which has happened in the NBA playoffs many times. (Several times, a three-seed would get home-court against a two-seed.)
I also wouldn’t have started Lawyer Milloy today. I don’t like asking someone to re-enter the fray when rusty, just like I don’t go for coaches benching quarterbacks with the hot hand (David Garrard, Damon Huard) for starters who returned for the playoffs.
This game should’ve been played in Atlanta. Again, Atlanta was the better team this season, and the NFL should’ve distributed home-field advantage where it belonged.

When he’s talking about how this isn’t how this season was supposed to end, he’s not talking about the loss itself. It’s how they lost it.
It’s one thing to play your best and get defeated by a superior opponent. It’s another to just collapse and forget how to do all of those things you did so well during the season. O-line forgot how to block and such.
How does this game turnout if the Falcons team that crushed the Panthers showed up? Collectively, this may have been the team’s worst showing all season.
It’s not that they lost is disappointing… it was unlikely they were going to win the Super Bowl and we all knew that. It’s that they played so poorly, so much differently than they did during the season.
Here’s to a productive offseason to shore up that defense. “There’s always next season.” That ought to be Atlanta’s motto.
Oh, and Brooking didn’t cost the Falcons the game by himself. Lofton bit too. NOBODY played well. Brooking has certainly lost a few steps and is at/near the end of his career and we should definitely be on the lookout for a replacement, but he’s had a great career for Atlanta, and doesn’t deserve so much hate from the fickle.

It’s just the way it rolls. I felt real postive going into halftime with a 2 pt. lead, but then the fumble, other mishaps, suddenly you’re behind the 8 Ball. Such is lift in the NFL, and these falcons have nothing to be ashamed of. They are a better team than Arizona, and Arizona will be exposed soon enough. However, Atlanta made some mistakes out there, and the defense still needs an upgrade. I’d keep Abraham, Grady, Wire, Houston, Jackson, Coleman….but Smith-who is a defensive guy- needs to look at this long term. They need to rid of guys like Brooking, and they need more pass rushers to compliment Abraham. He can’t do it all. All n’ all, I’m happy at this team this year. They overachieved….yet you want more…it’s only natural. With some small tweaks in the off season, this team is certainly capable of providing us with more next year, and years to follow.

One loss and out comes the ignorant negativity.
You idiots wanting the Falcons to move to ?Brunswick? and doing all the team-bashing are the very essence of the term “fan,”, as in FANATIC. You’re nuts.
Great season; bad playoff game. Deal with it. This team will be a viable Super Bowl threat for years to come with the foundation laid this season.
You ne’er-do-wells (Julie, Sarah, etc.) can hop off the bandwagon and make room for real backers of this team. And when this team wins its first Super Bowl, don’t come clamoring back on, telling us you were there all along, okay?
I know the loss stings for guys of real character, like Milloy, Ryan, Coach Smith, Turner, etc., and yeah, I imagine Keith Brooking will be a potential drop when hard decisions need to be made, but all in all, this season was supposed ot be at best - a 5-11 campaign, and we got an 11-5 playoff run.
This is step one in “the process,” and the process will take this franchise to its next Super Bowl, and first Super Bowl win, and maybe the first of many.
Matt Ryans, Peyton Mannings, Tom Bradys, they don’t come around often enough for many franchises to be legitimate, every-year Super Bowl threats. Well, folks - we have one, and he’s paired with talented recievers, running backs, and we’re getting younger on the defensive side of the ball and improving there, as well.
You malcontents can go now; the rest of us will enjoy the ride.
**Thanks, guys, for a truly memorable season. You eradicated decades of “here we go, again” thoughts and gave many of us a newfound appreciation for what “Falcons football” is now and for a long time.”“

I read on this site that they were wondering what to do with punter Koenan.
ARE THEY CRAZY?!!! KEEP THAT GUY PLEASE HE IS THE BEST PUNTER TO EVER PLAY A SEASON IF FOLKS WERE LISTENING CORRECTLY!!!! OUR SPECIAL TEAMS KEPT US IN MOST OF THE GAMES THIS SEASON. IF NOT OUR DEFENSE WOULD HAVE BEEN EXPOSED A LONG TIME AGO. CAROLINA, TAMPA, EVEN THE CHICAGO GAMES WERE ALL PRODUCTS OF OUR FANTASTIC SPECIAL TEAM.
CUT OUR MOST OF OUR DEFENSE HOWEVER!!!!

Let’s face it … AZ beat ATL. The Falcons were just not as passionate and did not want it as bad as AZ. It all boiled down to an old, slow linebacker and an over the hill defensive back … and it was over. I would have preferred my chances wih an on-side kick. If you were going to stop them on their twenty you should have been able to stop them on their forty five. Atlanta was out of sync most of the day … we’re here … we’re good and we’re suppose to win.
Atlanta was a mediocre team and evidently did not have the drive or passion to make this year any better than they did.
I’m not a fair weather friend. I attended the first game in Atlanta. My life has been filled with frustration and dashed hopes. It seems the Falcons will always be the “same old losing Falcons”. I guess that’s why I often pull for another team through the season. Losing year after year gets real old and not at all enjoyable.

Wow. What negativity by this article’s author and others. We should be quite proud of these Falcons. This season’s Falcons showed more grit than I’ve seen in my forty years as a native of this city. This team has the spirit of the phoenix that rises from the ashes. Next year we will rise higher.
Yes. We all wanted to be the Cinderella. We must be allowed to grow.
Thank you, Mr. Smith, Mr. Ryan, Mr. Turner, Mr. Norwood, Mr. White, Mr. Blank and the rest of the Atlanta Falcons for a very exciting year. You’re effort made me a football fan, finally. I never really gave a flying F, until you guys hit the field.
You played well and should be proud. Look forward to cheering you on next year!

Keep Milloy, Foxworth, and Jackson——cut old man chase the opponent after gaining 6 yards Brooking and Harvey “Swiss Cheese Dahl, and bad draft Jamaal”
And for God’s sake stop over throwing receivers Mr. Ice—-OK your a rookie, maybe the best ever, but you need to step up and improve too if this team is going further!!!
Dissapointing that we didn’t see the team that showed up all season—-damnit—-bad taste

Cardinal fan here. I just want to say I respect the Falcons. I knew this would be a tough game and it was. I kept expecting us to lose, but we managed to hold on. I think Matt Ryan has a great future and so does your team. Reading these comments makes me think we all have a lot in common. It’s difficult when your team loses, but any success should be enjoyed and savored because who knows what will happen tomorrow. Maybe we lose next week, but there is always hope. Just remember, WE HAD NOT EVEN HAD A HOME (CHICAGO!) PLAYOFF GAME SINCE 1947!

Our defense is awful. We ll knew our only shot at winning this game was to keep the offense on the field. While there were mistakes on offense, they didn’t stay on the field very long. That left our pitiful, no-playmaking defense exposed. Thomas Dimitroff will fix this defensive mess in the offseason. He’ll tweak the OL as well. Our Falcon future is so bright!!!!

I don’t know why some folks out there turned on the Falcons after one game. No one player caused this loss. They lost as a team just as they won as a team all year. If they have half the success in the free agent market as they did this past year, they should be even better next year. I liked what I saw this year. It seemed different than years past. The team seems to have more direction and hopefully they can for the 1st time give Atlanta two winning season in a roll. As for all the Cards fans that came here to taunt and troll, there is always next week. Don’t be surprised if their season ends after this next game.

MasterKush- “Defenses will key on Matt Ryan and he will be another sophomore slump”. Who the he11 are they supposed to key on, our left guard?
This team will be back and better next year. Cards may be suffering with Leinart next year, Bolden may be in Miami. But, unless Singletary works miracles in San Fran, the Cards will finish 6-10 and host a playoff game. Who knows, they may even sell it out without needing an extension. Can’t blame these Cards fans for all the trash talking. I would say “act like you’ve been there before”; but they haven’t. As for my Falcons, I would like to see the type of LB that offenses game plan around. Someone said to grab any of Baltimore’s LB. Does the name Ed Hartwell sound familiar?

message to lawyer milloy….turn around, locate the ball, jump, deflect the pass….message to defensive coaches: can someone please revolutionize the way defensive backs and safteys play the game. there needs to be more emphasis on getting interceptions, playing man to man, playing the ball etc.

AR was offsides on almost every play and was called twice. Also the safety should never have been- Ryan did throw the ball and it was a completion. This was a bullcrap game. Thank you Falcons for a nice season- you brought some life back to Atlanta.

We should draft a sportswriter in the first round next year and cut Schultz before he ends a sentence with a preposition or splits an infinitive. He can’t cope with irregular verbs anymore and relative pronouns give him fits.

Congrats to the Atlanta faithful. You have nothing to be ashamed of. The game could have gone either way.
It wasn’t the refs, and it isn’t the playoff format. Sure, you probably would have won the game if it was at home, but the format is what it is. If you think it was unfair to have to play a game on the road against a team with an inferior record, think about New England. This happens every year, fair or not.
For the true fans, keep the faith, and weed out the bandwagon fans. You don’t need them.

Jeff Schultz, your column is right on, man. This loss really hurts. Had the Falcons lost next week to the Giants or Carolina, I’d have nothing but praise for the home team. But this was a first-round loss to the Arizona Cardinals! The team with the worst record of the playoff contenders. The team with a 37-year-old QB. The team with three great receivers and not much else. Most experts predicted the Falcons to win. In fact, the Falcons should have won. But they didn’t. In typical Atlanta professional sports fashion, they built up our hopes, made us start believing in them, then they let us down like a deflated balloon. Now we must again question whether they will be able to accomplish consecutive winning seasons for the first time in their history in 2009.
But right now, I can’t even think about next season. I can’t imagine going through another season where they look so talented, then flush all that down the toilet with a first-round loss to an inferior team.
Oh, and to all the Vick supporters, no, the Falcons still do not need that convict on their team. They should avoid him like the plague. True, Matt Ryan did have a little let down toward the end of the season and in that playoff game. But that just reminded us that he is still a rookie. While the Falcons do have some positions that need to be addressed(Milloy needs to retire), QB is not one of them. Ryan will be just fine there as he gains more experience.

Was Michael Turner dragging a piano behind him last night? That guy looked as slow as Jerome Bettis. He plays much, much faster on artificial turf than grass. Too bad our coaches still haven’t picked up on this or else they would have gotten Jerious Norwood into the game.
Our OLine clearly got it’s tail whipped in this game. Maybe I’ve been wrong when I’ve bragged on them for most of the year. Usually OL Coach Boudreux can get them fired up at half time, like he did in the regular season finale against St. Louis. It didn’t work this time.
As for our defense…..it looks like we need at least 6 new players, if not 8. Brooking should retire as a Falcon now. The longer he plays, the more his career will be diminished. He is passed his prime. There can be no denying it.
I enjoyed going to games at the Dome this year. This team had an incredable year. We had a great 08 draft and FA signing period. With Dimitroff at the helm, the future is looking good. We’ve gotta build that defense, because defense wins championships.

Great season Falcons. The off season should produce some needed departures: Brooking, Jamaal Anderson, Milloy, et al. Much help is needed on the D-Line and O-Line and defensive secondary to make us a truly impact team. Those in denial need to understand that the demons own Roddy White. Back up the bus, trade Roddy, Jenkins and Fineran for a special player i.e. Calvin Johnson and your drops, missed plays, wrong routes, and lack of play-making would go away. Roddy is a good 2nd receiver, he’s not a go-to #1. The demons are always with him.

Two Questions: Why did VanGorder not blitz Warner on third and 16? If you remember correctly, the Falcons hired Ed Donatell from Green Bay after he was fired for not blitzing in a playoff game on fourth and long. VanGorder was coaching college back then, but Mike Smith should have demanded we bring pressure. Also, why is the AJC not writing more about Brooking? The article on personell changes mentions Milloy, but Brooking is our biggest problem. He dropped a relatively easy interception in the first half, then blew the coverage on the last play of the game. A veteran should not make that mistake with the game on the line. If we were in New York or Philly he would be the main headline. Down South, in a one paper town, he is not even mentioned.

I don’t understand all the negativism?? This was a team that was picked to be absolutely last this year! This is no where near a playoff or championship team. Championship teams have one thing this team does not come close to having, Incredible Defenses! This is the biggest patch worked defense in the league and should be a credit to the coaches to scheme up enough crap to get us to this point. Name ONE player other than Abraham who would play, let alone start, for another NFL team. There has to be a major revamping of this defense! All positions.
And for those to say Matt Ryan chocked, please. This is the start of a very successful tenure if this coaching staff/GM stay together. This team can get it done offensively. What rookie quarterbacks won the superbowl? Uhm Big Ben? He only had the best O-line available, a Bus to ride on, and oh yea, a defense that would smack you in the mouth! Ryan is a proven winner and will be here, winning, a long time provided we take care of the D !!!
Back to back winning seasons will finally happen next year. Play off wins will come and hopefully a superbowl! And I can’t wait! Mainly just to shut up those Vick supporters who say Vick : 2 playoff wins, Ryan : 0 playoff wins. What a pathetic joke! Go be your vick “jock” supporter to him in prison. You are no Falcons fan and we don’t want you hear!

Well, I’m proud of our season despite the playoff lost. With a few changes on defense: Keith Brooking, Chris Houston, Eric Coleman, and Jamaal Andersen. Resign Foxworth trade Mick Vick, and let the chips fall. With this haul over on defense we will be destined for greatness. Lord know’s “Keith Brooking” has to go. Great guy off the field, but father-time has caught up with him on the field.

ok, there were lots of factors as to why we lost. 1) Refs were drunk or something b/c ARZ jumped offsides ALL DAMN DAY!!!! 2) We all know our secondary is suspect at best. Did we really think they wouldnt get exposed against such a prolific passing game? 3) Van Gorder did not put nearly enough pressure on Warner. SO much zone shows distrust in the secondary….he honestly did the best he could with our rag-tag d. 4) Brooking, I hardly knew ye. How are you gonna just sit there when you knew they had to get SIXTEEN yards for a first? I have been saying for years that he’s past his prime. Its time to address the ‘backers in the offseason. 5) We were the better team yesterday but we were also the younger team and it showed. Ryan looked like a mix of week 4 against TB and the next against GB. Solid showing but he could have got a couple big plays but he overthrew his guys. 6) Mike Smith needs a better D-line and depth. D-line is his specialty. We need another big body in thereon that line. The jury’s still out on Jamaal Anderson. If he doesn’t produce next year, he should be gone. Overall, we had a tremendous season. We cannot be upset too bad. Hell, 20 other teams didnt make the big dance so that counts for something. We STILL have tremendous upside….and we’ll need to get better quickly as we face both the AFC and NFC East next year……Go Falcons. Thanks for the great year!!!!

Back to back winning seasons will happen next year provided they change the defense! Most positions! Who cares what next years schedule looks like? You can’t go by that. Look at all the teams that chalked up an immediate W on their schedule when they seen they were playing the “supposed to be last place” Falcons or Dolphins? Who feared playing the Brady-less Patriots this year? You can’t go by next years schedules because surprises and injuries always happen!

This was a good year for the Falcons and they exceeded expectations.
I am sure Keith Brooking is a leader on the team, but his play has been subpar all season. He’s been late and slow on most plays all season. Most of his tackles came after big yardage gains down field from the opposing player. Its time to retire, maybe he can become a asst. coach, but he shouldn’t be a liability to the team as a player, because he’s a good guy, the coaches and management love him and he from GA.
I expected the rookie to make some mistakes the ball is in hand 100% of the time, but I expected more from the veterans to make the BIG PLAY and they didn’t. It could have taken some of the pressure off the rookie.
GOOD YEAR. LET HAVE A GREAT SEASON, NEXT SEASON!!

Schultz, what is wrong with you? The Falcons had a lousy day on the O-line and D-line. It happens. It wasn’t Ryan’s fault, when you take away the running game, most Q-backs are going to have a tough time since the defense is playing for the pass all the way.
The Falcons played really well at times this year, but they still have some holes, and if you thought they would go far in the playoff’s this year, then you don’t know anything about sports. The Cardinals is a team we COULD beat, but as you should know, anything can happen in the playoffs.
I have nothing but confidence that the Falcons will make some more moves in the off season, getting some linemen and next year, we can have high hopes for playoff wins.

I can’t believe all of the negativity !!! We must have the biggest fair -weather fans in the country. Any REAL Falcon’s fan that really understands what is taking place here has lot’s to look forward to. This new regime has clearly demonstrated that they know exactly what they are doing. Give Dimitroff and Smith some time to build this thing up. Quit being so damn negative. This was suppose to be a horrible rebuilding season. There was nothing horrible about it. This is not a 1 or 2 year project. It is long term project. Eventhough we should be better overall next season, I do not expect us to win 11 games next season because of the brutal schedule(NFC South, NFC East, AFC East, Chicago&San Fran) Bottom line is, we should be very excited about the long term future of this franchise because of the people who are now running it. I truly believe we are witnessing the making of the next New England of the NFC !! Go Birds !!!

As bad as I hate to say it our elder statesmen cost us the game today. Milloy was to slow to help cover on the 1st TD and out of position on another. He plays the run good but sucks as a cover safety. The Falcons need to replace him through free agency if possible. And Keith Brooking played that 3rd and 16 like a pop warner player. The tight end was his man. He’s always late picking up a back out of the backfield or covering a tight end. 3rd and 16, how in the hell do you not back up into deeper coverage. He cost us a chance at the end. These 2 old soldiers have seen their best days. For the Falcons to improve their defense they must be replaced. THANKS FALCONS FOR AN OUTSTANDING SEASON.

On any Sunday… which can be On any Saturday during the Playoffs, any NFL team can beat the other NFL team. It is just a very strange fact. Each year, how many favored teams get beaten? But the really sad point is that there are NO GUARANTEES in the NFL. Ask any Colts’ fans.
This year, it was Atlanta’s Cinderella Season. Next year, they will have a target on their back. The second year is always much tougher because the rest of the Offensive and Defensive coordinators in the league will spend 2,000 hours looking at film during the off-season ripping through every play of Atlanta to see what they did right.
It’s not just about talent. It is about Atlanta’s ability to innovate and have a second song up their sleeve.
Hat’s off to Arizona. I only wish that they would have discovered their defense on somebody else’s dime.

The Cardinals had a better game plan and better coaching, they played harder and more intelligently, and played with more enthusiasm in this particular game. Also, they have a more experienced quarterback and field general in Curt Warner. It’s that simple people. Get over it and cut out the crying. You homers are ridiculous. Keith “Alzheimer Victim” Brooking is untalented shet! That goes without saying. Two decisions by Mike Petrino really set the stage for this choke of monumental proportions. The first was settling for that damn field goal! Cards would have folded in early 7-0 hole. Knew that was beginning of the end. Saw pre-2008 losers were back. Was right. The second was not attempting onside kick on kickoff from midfield after penalty! Odds were in team favor at that point. Recovered or not! What was the gamble? A few yards one way or the other. Our pitiful defense cannot make a damn stand anyway. Against any damn body! Need 25 yards on a third down play? No problem. Just throw the ball against the Falcons. First down every mother (X) time! Thanks again Keith. Spare me the close loss melody. Hear enough of that mother (X) shet on Toiletlid (Thrasher) sites!

HOME FIELD ADVANTAGE: There’s a reason why this is important, and the Falcons simply aren’t as good on the road, and haven’t been. THE WALL: Typically rookie QB’s will hit this at 13-16 game of the season. Ryan hit it, heck ESPN did a whole spot about this phenomena. They are getting hit harder and more often than in college, and it adds up. Probably this is more mental than physical, but it is real. FLAWS GET EXPOSED: The playoffs are the best teams you play, and every level gets more difficult. The defense got totally exposed, and that bad offensive line showed itself again. EXPERIENCE: Whisenhunt is an experienced playoff coach (Pittsburgh), and his attack approach caught the Falcons off guard on offense and defense. NEXT YEAR: I fully expect the Falcons to make a run again. Some of the holes will be filled, and the experience is invaluable.

The cards are loaded with talent on both sides of the ball especially at the skilled position.
All those years of losing ang high draft picks are paying off.
The schedule next year will be tougher that is your reward for your fantastic season.
You clowns really think defensive studs want to play in this cesspool you clowns live in? Forget it.
Matt Ryan is good for at least 2 INTs against any solid defense and that is a problem.
As poorly as you played against the rams what did you chokers really expect?

Jeff,
I usually like most of your stuff. After what happened last year to the Falcons and having 44% of the roster replaced, why must your article be so negative. Mike Smith speakes of “the process”. This team just got outplayed today. There are many holes to be filled. DT,OL,SS,CB,TE. I cannot be all accomplished in one year. 4-12 to 11-6. Amazing!!!! Maybe you could write something more suitable like this next time. Look at this article by Pat Yasinskas of ESPN.
http://myespn.go.com/blogs/nfcsouth/0-7-25/Season-is-over-for-Falcons—but—the-process—-isn-t.html
As a season ticket holder and Fan since I was 8 years old I say Bravo to the Falcons and What A Great Year!!!! Go Falcons in 09!

Congratulatons Falcons on a terrific 11 win season. From what all the talking heads were saying we weren’t supposed to win but 1 game all year. If there is one thing I cannot stand in the world of sports its a FAIR-WEATHER fan and im sure a lot of them are already looking for another bandwagon to jump on. As a lifelong die hard Falcons fan nothing irks me as bad as reading about all of the bashing when the organization is clearly headed in the right direction. We have the Rookie of the Year at quarterback, a very good head coach in Mike Smith, and a top notch front office with Arthur Blank and Thomas Dimitroff. I look forward to next year and watching this team prove people wrong again. It all starts with the draft in April we need to make a few adjustments on defense in the secondary and at linebacker, sure we have a tougher schedule next season but all games are tough in the NFL.

Borden… Im with you man I am a fan of this team whether they are 0-16 or 16-0 total diehard. Words can’t describe how proud I am of this year’s Falcons team. A big thumbs up to the entire front office Mr. Blank, TD and to the coaching staff on an outstanding season. Matt Ryan played his heart out all season long, its truly amazing how good wide receivers can be when the quarterback throwing them the ball is accurate. Roddy White, and Michael Jenkins both had good seasons. Defensively we were sharp for most of the season but down the stretch Abraham was banged up and Milloy wasn’t 100 percent. Hopefully Thomas Dimitroff will make some minor adjustments defensively that will have us right back in the playoffs next year.

To the misguided Atlanta fans who “brag” that the Falcons “lost by less than a touchdown…”
You did notice the Cards had the ball inside your 30 for the entire last two minutes of the game, and all they did was kneel it down.
If we’d wanted to run up the score, we could’ve.
LET THIS BE A LESSON:
Do NOT support a newspaper that gives your opponents bulletin board material! When I saw the AJC quote up on the Jumbotron, I knew every fan and every player was in it to win. I screamed myself hoarse and laughed in the face of the few Falcons fans I saw.
By the way, why did you guys return so many of your allotment of tickets? I saw plenty of negative comments about the Cards late sellout. Why didn’t you make the trip? I would’ve loved laughing at you too.

first of all, i’ll take this season over last year’s or the two previous any time. There is a very bright future for this organization. secondly, in my dream world, i keep wondering what would have happened if New Orleans held Carolina from making that field goal, allowing Atlanta to win the division and be the #2 seed so that they could play at home (or if the playoff system actually allowed the team with the best record to play at home rather than a team that beat up on a very sorry division and limped into the playoffs). If this game was in the Georgia dome, I think we’d be singing a happier tune this morning. Turner and Ryan are different players in the dome. really the home team is. The only game they really lost was to denver and that was only because White dropped a pass in the end zone. I think the falcons earned it and should have been given that privilege. As for Ryan, give him a break, that’s the most he has ever had to carry this team by himself (without Turner doing squat) and he did a very impressive job… oh did you all forget that this is his rookie season? He’s never even been to the playoffs before and wasn’t ever supposed to be there, but he settled down quickly and did his best to put the team on his back and win. All you people that are talking about Vick; guess what? it doesn’t matter we don’t know if he would have done better (though from almost every game I saw in his last 2 years, he wouldn’t have done even as well), He’s gone and will never be a part of this team again. Being a fan of a team isn’t the same thing as being a fan of a person. This vent is for falcons fans, not for fans of a guy who isn’t even in the NFL. This issue is more than dead, get over it and support the positive direction we’re moving in. Yeah, i’m ticked about the money I spent on my Vick jersey too, thinking he would be here for many years, but oh well, whining doesn’t make it better. Ryan is an amazing quarterback and will be even better next year. The first interception was nerves, the second was a risk trying to do everything he could to help the team win where White didn’t fight enough for the ball. The fumble was just sorry play calling by the officials. The D-line of the cards was living off-sides all day and obviously jumped the count to be that far in the back field. to the cards fan who was on here, yeah there were missed calls against the falcons too, but they weren’t game changers. The missed hold in the end zone didn’t matter because the cards got a safety anyway. The falcons would finally get something together and the officials would just happened to notice a hold (which occurs all the time be was conveniently called). They were blind to the cards jumping offsides though. anyway, moral of the story is that this is a great team who in it’s beginnings is 11-5. We make take some steps back over a couple of years while fine tuning, but eventually this will be a beast of a team with one of the tops QBs in the NFL who will bring the playoffs back to the dome. I’m very proud already and can’t wait for the draft and free agency to see who Dimitroff in his brilliance brings in to help complete this team. Nobody whine about his picks this time though. We have to realize at this point that the man knows what he’s doing.

THANK YOU BOYS! THANK YOU
Been a long time since I was this proud of my team. And I say team because I am lot prouder not only of this winning team but also how they were able to do it. We are off to a great start and it’s only going to better.
Arizona simply gameplanned better. Of course they were offsides most of the night but from what I saw they were going on the playclock rather than Ryans snap count and that gave them the extra half step they need to get the jump on the o-line.
Hats off to those and good luck in Carolina next week.
But I love my birds again and this isn’t going to change the one bit.
Now where the hell did I put my season ticket renewal?

I can’t believe the “fair weather” Atlanta fans on this blog. We were picked by some to win no more than a couple of games, and look what we did. Now, some of you are ready to have them move because they lost a game that they should not even be playing in. Shame on you!!
A dynasty has to be built. It doesn’t just show up over night. This team is for real. If they continue to improve by the leaps and bounds they did this year, Atlanta may just get that dynasty. Just be patient.
If you want to say that we have accomplished nothing, you would be putting us in the same league as Detroit. I hope you feel better about the Birds than that.

Congratulations to the referees who screwed up the first half of the game by letting them play. Somebody got a call after the referees let AR sack Ryan, to stop allowing the offsides.
AR won the game, in the end, but the Falcons would have been much more ahead, at the half if the referees called the game correctly.
At least it is not the last Steelers Super Bowl, inwhich the referees accidently gave the Championship to Pittsburgh, because it was Bettis’ last game.

Some of these posts on this blog are unbelievable,
Watch much football, people? Geez!
Fact: For the first time in a long time, this organization finally had a YOUNG foundation to build a consistent winner. (and NO, MV7 dosen’t count because while he was indeed young (and stupid), he wasn’t a winner.
Fact: Once and for all, the “ghosts” of MV7 and Coward Petrino have been exorcized!! May they not be spoken of anymore here or anywhere else in ATL. Now, if we can get the Northeast media (ESPN)to also shut up about it).
Although dissapointing, this season did run its course, and Arizona, to their credit, responded well to all the bulletin board material. For the first time in many, many years, I am CONFIDENT that leadership will make the right adjustments to win in the future…

This display of negative b.s. is ridiculous.
Those of you b%$#&ching about Milloy’s play, or Abraham’s play, or Matt Ryan’s decisions… have ya considered the rigors of a full season and the toll it takes on these guys’ bodies? H
1. We got a full season out of John Abraham - consider yourself blessed.
2. We got stability and leadership from Milloy, and the guy had a bad back going into the game. Any of you laptop-jockies play full-contact football with a bad back? Anyone? Anyone? Hell, you wouldn’t leave he bed with the pain he had.
3. And Ryan came down to do earth the last month or so - big deal. He gave us one of the best rookie QB season in NFL history, and yet you wanna deride him about yesterday’s play? We’d have been pummelled without the POSITIVT things he did.
This team’s fairly young, smart, and talented. They’ll learn from the lessons of this game, and the Denver game (the game I believe cost them home field and the division because I think they overlooked them), and they’ll be better for it.
You malcontents whine about this year’s shortcomings, when Dimitroff weaved his magic in only one offseason. If he can improve a 4-12 squad to 11-5, what would a second offseason bring? If Matt Ryan can have a rookie season like this, imagine the progressions he’s going to make.
Oh, and Vicksupporter… how many playoff games did your “hero” win in his rookie season? Oh, wait, that’s right, he held a clipboard because he couldn’t grasp the playbook and beat out Chris freaking Chandler. Shut your hole.
I forsee Dimitroff addressing our needs for a middle linebacker, filling our secondary wih depth (Nmamdi’s a UFA from Oakland - go get ‘em) and maybe drafting another talented young OL to bookend with Sam Baker.
I think our schedule looks like a 10-6 or another 11-5 campaign is ahead; but you doomsayers have your thoughts…and you’re free to have ‘em.
But do consider this…
1. The division’s getting older and we’re getting younger, especially at QB. New Orleans has Brees but their run game is aging and their defense never improves. Tampa has nothing at QB and the Cadillac’s back in the shop for another offseason. Carolina has Delhomme, but he’s aged, too, their defense is talanted but just about at that age where they begin to decline, as well.
2. We have only begun to see what Ryan will do, what our 1-2 running tandem can provide us, what Chevis Jackson, Chris Houston, Biermann, Lofton will be for our future defense, and what Dimitroff will do to improve this squad.
This team’s headed in the right direction. Again, if you aren’t satisfied, get off the bandwagon and make room for the real supporters.

VS2…
1. VIck held a clipboard in his rookie year because he wasn’t smart enough to grasp the playbook and beat out Chris Chandler. Therefore, there are no MV7 stats to compare to Ryan’s rookie year.
2. Matt Ryan’s never committed a felonious crime and been convicted for it and gone to prison.
Those two points, alone, make Ryan not only a better QB at this stage of his career, but it makes him a better person and face for the organization.

Schultzie…is this really the way you see things, or are you just trying to stir it up real good to get the blog going? If these are your honest thoughts, you’re a bigger dumbazz than I thought.
Great year for the Falcons. Anybody saying at the beginning of the season that the Falcons would be in the playoffs would have been laughed at, and rightly so. Twenty teams out there would have loved to have had a season like the Falcons. Dagger to the heart? Nothing like a little hyperbole, eh?
And for those who want to blame certain individuals for this loss…grow up! Stop the whining and crying and jumping off the bandwagon (and I include you in this bunch, Schultz). They won as team and they lost as a team. Hell, I’m just glad they are finally a “team”.
The Falcons are who I thought they were…a pretty good football team with a few holes. I have enjoyed wathing this over-achieving bunch more than any other Falcons team I remember. And based on what Dimitroff, Blank and Smith accomplished in one year, I’m confident the holes will be fixed.
Good year Falcons! I expect even more next year.

Enough with the whining regarding the “Cardinals jumping the snap count”. On the play that mattered the most, Darnell Dockett was NOT offsides as some Falcon fans suggest. The reason the Cardinals were getting off as quick as they were was because the D-line ws able to anticipate the count. It’s up to the QB to counter that. Ryan failed to do so. Hmmm, he’s rookie, right. You are what you are. It is what it is. That’s all.

Spread his herpes around to unsuspecting sexual partners (some of whom may have been his very own pit bulls).
Gave the fans the finger because they expressed their dissatisfaction with his play.
Managed to avoid charges (thanks AB!) in the water bottle incident.
Allowed himself to be photographed smokin a blunt in the back of a limo.
Embarrassed the entire organization and the NFL with his dog fighting convictions and lies.
Yeah, he was a great one alright! BWAH! Thank God his azz is gone and we finally have a QB with INTELLIGENCE. (Don’t be hatin on ‘em just cause he’s smarter than your BOY.) Can’t wait till he gets out so we can at least get something in return for his sorry azz.

Atlanta’s season will be chalked up as 0-1. You weren’t a division winner, you were lucky to even get in the playoffs. That’s not that bad for being a small market team, right? It’s time to move over and let the big boys play now. You were just filler to make the playoffs a little longer, nobody really expected or even thought you could win. Your voices were loud, and talked a lot of garbage before the game, which made it a whole lot easier to laugh at you when reality smacked you in the face. Don’t worry though, the Cards aren’t really all that either and will be eliminated shortly as well.

It’s funny, VickSupporter2 is one of about 5 posters on this blog at any one time that gets people fired up.
I used to recite those same facts about Vick back in the day…playoff wins, etc. but then he began to regress. You know, Vick never had back to back winning seasons and also was at the helm when we were 6-0 and then collapsed to 8-8 twice to miss the playoffs.
Vick did 2 things and 2 things only. Threw to the TE (easiest read on the field) and tuck and run. That’s it, simple. I laugh out loud reading someone call Vick the greatest ever, or better yet, God. He NEVER threw for 3000 yards….EVER. Ryan threw for 3500 Year 1. You can compare and contrast all you want, but saying Ryan is Leaf is the dumbest and most uneducated thing you can do and makes all your other statements a fluke. Die Hard Vick fans are not Falcons fans, and they to will go by the wasteside in due time. Vick will be suspended by Goodell for 1 year after his release so his earliest return will be 2010. He was dumb as rocks when he came out of school and was in a simplified offense for 6 years. Could you imagine him trying to play QB in the NFL at 29 years old and not playing for 3+ years? It will be like watching a 6 year old trying to do calculus. Good luck with that.
Good Job Falcons, great year. Can’t wait for next year and better things to come.

I’m sick of all this Cinderella story talk with the Falcons. It’s only the local Atlanta news saying it though. While I was over in Los Angeles last week, I heard barely a mention of the Falcons. The true NFL Cinderella team is Miami. Everyone knows this. The Falcons did what we all thought they would do, choke and have an early exit. It’s kind of like how Vick was hyped in the southern markets, but yet the rest of the country saw him for what he was. A completely innacurate passer who hogs the ball and can’t win the big game. At least you finaly played as a team, but let’s be honest… you’re just not that good and it wasn’t a surprise.

Hey Y’all:
“ONE HEARTBEAT, BABY!!!”. “ONEHEARTBEAT!!” We Win and we lose in “ONE HEARTBEAT!!” WHAT A GREAT SEASON!!
WHAt a great season the FAlcons have offered us. Even though we lost the game, this team showed great teamwork, excitement, character, compassion for the game, and brotherhood. FACT: Bill Belichick was 5-11 in his first season at New England.
FACT: It took his second year in New England to win a Super Bowl.
You IDIOTS who make comments like “only losers could be satisfied with just making the playoffs” don’t have the mental aptitude to grasp the FACT that you can’t just start from scratch with a rookie QB, rookie head coach, all-new coaching staff, new run scheme, and boom - win a Super Bowl.
We’re not satisfied with just making the playoffs. We’re SATISFIED with this assemblage doing what they did this season, because RIGHTFULLY nobody had expectations that they’d have a winning season, let alone finish 11-5 and make the playoffs.
The sky’s the limit for the future of this organization; and that just eats you Vick-idios up, doesn’t it? I take pleasure in that!!! It just tears at your soul to know that a team CAN and HAS moved on from your dog-slaying hero to be a viable winning football franchise while your guy wastes away in a halfway house, doesn’t it?
Good. The sad thing is, you idiots will be right there claiming you believed all along, when Matt Ryan hoists a Lombardi trophy in the near future. Idiots.

Sam baker killed the falcons yesterday. He looked like a giant sloth coming off the snap in slow motion and was getting beat almost every time. Not good for someone who is supposed to be protecting ryans blind side. Doesnt suprise me at all that he got sacked 3 times. I dont know what was wrong with sam yesterday, but it was obvious he was not up to game speed. Next time wait until after the game to hit the hotel buffet.

We had a much more entertaining year with the Falcons. The kid will get better and the Falcons will be a force to reckon with for years to come. Vick is gone, along with what I call the Presidential Solution offense he ran. If I want to watch yard ball, I will go down to the park. I am born and raised in Atlanta. I was embarrassed by the players/coaches attitude last year. Now, I am, once again, a proud Falcon fan and can’t wait until next year.

Mr. Schultz,
This is a classless article. I can remember back in July thinking that the Falcons would be lucky to win two games. The big prize was the number one pick in the 2009 draft, but look this team won 11 games and made the playoffs. Lets see, Cowboys, Patriots, Broncos, and Packers (all yearly participants in the playoffs are at home watching.
I will agree that this is a disappointing way to end the season, and nothing is a lock for next season, but the offense is set. We have a draft and FA that can improve the defense.
My hat is off to Blank, Dimitroff, and Smith. Good Job, and lets remember that Ryan is only a rookie who played well beyond any expectations.
If you need a lousy team to write about, the Trashers are waiting for you.

Well this blog once again shows that the Falcons are a moron magnet. A rookie QB pulls his team back into the game twice but all of a sudden he is useless because his D gives up a bunch of third downs. Go figure. For those with anything more than the intelligence of an amoeba this team now has a passing QB who stays in the pocket and gives his o-line the ability to know where he is 2 seconds after the snap. I watched this guy destroy Tech last year and then heard the morons who had never seen him play blast him. Here’s a word for you - BIGOTS. But here’s the good news - the weaknesses in this team are clear and can be fixed. A tough right side CB (Houston is quick but not much else) would be a great start, plus replace Keith Brooking with a free agent OLB with speed. A new RT, a big DT, a mobile TE and an understudy for Milloy and this team will be in great shape.

Hey guys, we can’t win them all, and thanks for a great fun-filled year! The Falcons won as a team, and this game they lost as a team, everyone made mistakes, nobody was really charged up, and lets be honest, the best team gave the game away. The Falcons, at home, would have completely blown out the Cards, not even a close game. Its over now and we have a team to be proud of and we look forward to next year. They are only a couple players short of a true superbowl team.

First of all, for u to sit there and say that The Great Mike Vick only threw to his TE…….maybe it was because he was the only one to catch the ball consistently. Before u bring up Roddy & Jenkins, any real football fan knows that it takes a few years for a wr to get acclimated tot the nfl. You say he never passed for 3000yds, how can u when your wrs lead the NFL in drops for consecutive years. The Falcons were a running team, and vick would maybe get 20 pass att. A game, most times less. The organization was a joke, Blank included. Vick had his flaws as a qb, but I know one thing…..he won playoff games as a starter, and Ryan got overwhelmed. What happened to the “Ice”? Did he run out? Ryan look really flustered to me, and he’s almost guranteed to throw 2ints a game, NOT VICK. I remeber the playoff game against the Packers, where Vick, first year as a starter, calmly led us to Vicktory, while Ryan was flustered. Vick will be back. Put that in your meth pipe and smoke it

I know it wasn’t just me who noticed that every big play the Cards made No. 56 was in the vicinity. The last one was just unconscionable.
Arizona needed 16 yards for a first down and what does the Georgia Tech graduate do? Well he didn’t drop back 16 yards to keep everything in front of him and stop the first down. No, what he does is come up on a run fake and allow the TE to get behind him for a crushing first down. KB getting beaten by guys he was supposed to cover was routine vs. Arizona. Say what you want about the turnovers, but his play and that of the season-long pathetic secondary doomed this team.
The offense is in great shape. There should be some fairly easy personnel decisions to make regarding the lack of football savvy defense — starting with Brooking — in the offseason.
Just a thought: Maybe Tech grad Ken Whisenhunt knew the other Tech grad was too dense to stay deep and went after him knowing No. 56 would bite and not make a big play — for the Falcons, that is.

I watched the Falcon game. The Cards keyed on Turner early on. Smith didn’t adjust.
Smith lost that easily won game. We had them. There was no way the Cards could have won that game, unless Smith was calling the shots. Do you have any idea how many plays open up when the defense starts to time their rushes? They were sitting ducks, but Smith goes, “huh?”. He doesn’t know football.
Then there was the ….you know what? I’m done. If Blank wants to know how he could have won that game, then let him call me himself.
I’m sick. THis loss is more than I can bear.
I am a football savant. I am warning Blank that nobody but me can bring him a superbowl ring.

Flacco sure is looking good right now…….he’ isn’t “flustered” or “rattled” like a QB (Ryan) I know………
I guess the “Ice” in Ryan’s veins must have frozen, lol. Vick is the better QB, plain and simple. I don’t care about stats, just wins, and 38-28-1 says alot when you’re carrying a sorry franchise on your back. I read someone’s post that said this was a “good season” for the Falcons, you people will always have that losers’s mentality w/Ryan as your QB. When Vick was our QB, it was SB or bust, so I guess its “ok” to have a 1 and done playoff season and lose to a lesser team. What a shame…………And then you people turn on Turner and Roddy (as usual), just last week, Turner was the “man” and now you people call him a fat a*……my…..how quickly things change. Are you folks still calling Ryan the next “Montana”? I don’t hear “dynasty” coming out anymore, lol. No biggie though, you’ll still make excuses for Ryan 5 year down the road and we all know why that will happen. Vick 09 Redemption is near………………….

To keep things in perspective, this was to be a rebuilding year for the Falcons, yet they went 11-5 in a very tough division and make the playoffs with a rookie QB and coach. It was really a good season.
There were countless reasons they lost the game, but I have been impressed w/ the moves Dimitroff has made so far, and hope that he will make some smart moves in the off season to make this team even better next year.
Those of you calling for Brooking to retire may be right.
The entire defense should get a Tshirt or something that reads “3rd and 16” and have to wear it all off season to remind them of how they possibly ended the season by allowing the Cardinals to convert on 3rd and 16. 3rd and 16, are you kidding me?

Wow….the stupidity of Vick Supporter and all his aliases is mind numbing. Ryan is a rookie. He’s 0-1 in the playoffs. Until you show me where Vick won every playoff game he played in, you can shut the hell up. Vick was obviously a MUCH better athlete and a very exciting player, but he’s wasn’t and isn’t HALF the QUARTERBACK that Matt Ryan is. He can’t make the reads and doesn’t execute the offense as well as Matt.
Open your eyes fools. Funny how the WRs are the same and all of a sudden they can catch when Matt throws it to them but they were all busts when Vick was around. Funny huh?
And finally, most importantly, CUT THAT BUM KEITH BROOKING TODAY. DO NOT WAIT ANY LONGER. HE’S WASHED UP AND OVERRATED!!!

@ Vick Supporter
Ryan’s played one playoff game. He’s been in the league one year. Therefore, because he threw 2 INTs in his first playoff game, he is “almost guaranteed” to throw 2 picks a game. You’re a really smart fellow.
Your beloved’s first year as a starter came in his second season as a pro. If your beloved was so special, why couldn’t he overtake that bum Chris Chandler in his rookie year? Why?
Explain it to me.
Do not give me a conspiracy theory.
Explain it to all of us.
You make me want to defend Matt Ryan. Why? Because your suppositions are so flawed. You are a fool. You talk and talk and talk about Vick as if the man were the greatest playoff QB anyone has ever seen. You fall back on the one thing Vick did that Matt Ryan hasn’t done (albeit in one season): win a playoff game. Why? Because you don’t want anyone to cheer for Matt Ryan. After all, he must have set Vick up and got him arrested.
I know you’re not a Falcon fan. A Falcon fan wouldn’t waste months promoting a player that firebombed the Falcons. Even so, it is quite humorous that you (and others) come to this blog every chance you get to promote Vick. Was the enjoyment you drew from watching Vick run around so great that it trumps anything that you would ever want to see on a football field?
I bought a Vick jersey in 2004. I hoped against hope that the man would improve as a passer and put it all together. Instead, the man continued to commit a crime (after it became a federal crime, no less) and was thrown in jail. That’s leadership, my friend. That’s a QB who is making a commitment to leading his team to the Promised Land.
Why didn’t Vick ever make adjustments in games? Why didn’t he study film? Why didn’t he make opponents pay with his arm? Why?
Please explain all of this to me. There’s nothing in Vick’s passing numbers that lead me to believe that he was ever going to be able to win games with his arm. That was the Falcons’ fatal flaw on offense when he was under center. Other teams knew that taking Vick’s legs away from him made the guy a bad QB. That’s so easy for a defense to prepare for.
(By the way, Vick has two playoff wins. Ryan has none. Ryan is an active NFL player. Vick is in jail. It’s soooooooo unfair, isn’t it?)

While the offense struggled mightily Saturday and likely cost the Falcons a win, it is the defense that has the most holes to fill in this off-season.
First, thank you A. Blank, Thomas Dimitroff and Coach Smith for creating and molding a team this city can be proud of.
2nd, the defense lacked enough play-makers to overcome turnovers they had on Saturday.
A good NFL defense makes plays to stop the opponents offense and get them off the field. Not the “bend but don’t break” philosophy like in college. When plays are not made drives are extended, field position is flipped and more burden is put on the offense. Our most prominent, and maybe our only, defensive play-maker was limited by injury (#55). He needs help.
It is in this context i discuss Keith Brooking. I am not criticizing his career because he has had a very good career. But, I criticizing his play last year and especially this year. He doesn’t make plays. Yes, he makes tackles… but almost all are well down field. He can not cover anyone anymore because he has slowed. It’s very understandable because of his tenure in the league. I think the media and most likely KB take offense to everyone attacking Brooking, but in my view it is because he is in such a prominent role in this defense.
If you don’t agree with my thoughts on Brooking, I ask you one question. Do you think it was a coincidence the Cardinals called the play they ran at the most critical time in the game?
I say no, they put KB in the cross heirs knowing they had a distinct advantage because he is a liability.
I look forward to several upgrades to this defense in this off-season. And to an even better “team” in 2009. Thanks and Go Falcons!

Flacco’s playing well. Notice anything else playing well for the Ravens today?
That D’s playing pretty well, isn’t it? The Dolphins just fumbled. That’s four turnovers today. Must be nice to have the second-best defense in the NFL to rely on. Ed Reed sure is a good player, isn’t he?
I know you’re completely focused on the “Vick is great/Ryan is Ryan Leaf” stuff, but for the sane reading this blog, I think we all know the Falcon D has to get a lot better for this team to be a true contender.

11-5 don’t mean squat if you can’t win a playoff game vs the worst team in the playoffs. I should be satisfied with 11-5? That’s just the window to get to the real games, nothing more. If you are satisfied and happy with going 11-5 and then getting spanked in the one real game that matters, than you’re a bigger moron than I am for thinking the Falcons actually had a good shot at winning. I can remember whe The Great Mike Vick was here and he was blamed for EVERYTHING, so now, we shall shift the blame to Mr. Ryan. Fair game, right? He deserves alot of the blame himself. You people blamed everybody but Ryan. That why you fans are losers. If Vick was the QB (we would have beat the Cards) ya’ll would blame Vick even if we won the game. Ryan just can’t make all of the throws. Merril Hoge hit it in the head, Matt Ryan has trouble with the verticle pass, which equates to a weak arm. First off my hat is off to the coaching staff and players of the 2008 Atlanta Falcons football team; they made Sundays fun again for alot of Falcons fans. Arthur Blank has a solid GM and I trust his input and eye for talent with making future draft picks and free agent trades for this team. The asst. coaches assembled on this team are strong and w/another year under Mularkey, Matt Ryan will be dangerous. The Falcons will need to make upgrades on the offense in the following areas: Upgrade the Right Tackle position, Tyson Clabo is a solid tackle, but is better suited as a backup RG or RT versus an every game starter. God Bless Todd Weiner but his knees just won't allow him the mobility necessary to play at this level consistently, it's time to make him a permanent backup or let him go. I'm not yet decided on Harvey Dahl, but w/some pass protection improvements he may be a keeper at RG. The center position intrigues me, Todd McClure is old and a little undersized, but he plays solid most of the time; Atlanta should look to bring in new blood at the center position and groom the new guy for a year if need be before letting McClure go. The QB, wide receivers, and running backs are set w/this team. We will need to find a pass catching tight end in the offseason so we can threaten defenses more down the seam. I'd also like to see Snelling used as a FB so he can get on the field more often and be used to run after catching quick routes out of the back field. Ovie Mughelli just makes way too much money for what he does, I think we'd get more bang for our buck having Snelling play the position. On defense, we need a NT who has much greater mobility than Grady Jackson. I love Barry Cofield from the Giants and/or that DT named Brown for the Titans; these guys can stop the run and get after the quarterback. John Abraham and Justin Babineux are solid players leave them in place. Jamaal Anderson needs to get one more year to show he can play DE at this level or we need to cut his salary and make him a backup. I love the inspired play of Chauncey Davis, K. Moorehead, and Kroy Bierman, hang onto them. At LB we need to upgrade the WLB position. God Bless Keith Brooking but he just doesn't have the game changing plays left in him. Either let S. Nicholas on the field or find a free agent w/3-5 years under his belt to come in and lead our line backers. M. Boley needs to be pushed down the depth chart to a backup role or let go; he just didn't play inspired football during a contract year and doesn't deserve the investment from the team. Coy Wire is a solid run stopping LB but not a cover back, so we'll need to upgrade the SLB position as well. MLB is set. At DB, we have got to find a ball-hawking SS (like Bob Sanders) to replace L. Milloy who's contract is up. Re-sign D.Foxworth and let him and the rest of the CBs gel during the offseason; they are a solid corps group that I feel just need more time together to master some of the coverages they are being asked to play. Chis Houston sucks at zone coverage, let him play bump and run more often; and someone PLS teach him how to turn around and look for the ball before it's hitting the receiver in the hands. Otherwise he's a solid RCB. That's it, my two cents worth. Not sure where the team sets salary wise, but w/the corps group of players we have returning and upgrades at: RT, C, TE, NT, WLB, SLB, and SS this team is destined to again reach the playoffs and should be expected to play deeper into them.

Flacco hasn’t been put in a position to carry his team to a win in this game, thanks to the great play by the defense. He deserves credit for avoiding turnovers in this game (unlike Ryan yesterday), but at the same time he hasn’t been put in a position to take risks throwing the ball down the field (unlike Ryan yesterday).
But that doesn’t change the fact that he faced much tougher competition over the course of the season than Ryan, or the fact that he got better over the course of the season while Ryan got worse. Ryan had the better season this year, but it’s entirely possible (maybe even likely) that Flacco will be every bit as good as Ryan, if not better, down the road.

Coach Smith came out Throwing the Ball putting Ryan in a bad position. If anyone watched the last couple of games you could see he was playing bad 4int last two games. And for coach smith to come out throwing was wrong just wrong. He set the tone for the cardinals defense. Turner 1699yds granted I’ve alway thought he tip toe when he runs and it showed yesterday. Norwood should be our primary back use turner as change of pace back. But 6int in three games scary. Coach Smith tried to make Ryan a post season star instead of a rookie in his first playoff game allow run game to protect him.

The cards were being told to stick to their defensive lanes. and Smith ordered plays that would end up right in the grasps of those defensive linemen, who were disciplined and committed to the same gap…the..whole…game.
When a defensive lineman sticks to his lane and his gap, and you can rely on that, (and we could), then it opens up plays that score touchdowns. How can none of you fans know that? How can you defend this regime that loses in the first round to a mediocre team?
What? Because smith yells at the ref and it makes great Utube? FAQUE!
FaQ all of you. I’m not taking this loss sitting down. Mediocre fans who dont demand better are the enemy. I’m declaring football fan blog-war on every single one of you.
You are all hereby banned from this blog if all you can say is, “the falcons are in process and headed in the right direction. We had a good season, better than we expected. Wait till next year.”
RETARDS!
I’m making a citizen’s arrest formally, here on this blog, and you are all in my custody till the sports police show up and you all get prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
Demand a new coach. When you hear a coach talk about a “game plan”, then you know he’s a phony. you have to fly by the seat of your pants in football, and adjust your play calls to what the other team is doing.
Knowing the impromptu counterpunch is a rare gift, and only a handfull of people in the world know them. It’s like conflict resolution 101. If you can rely on the defense sticking to any “game plan”, then you can destroy them. Easily.
It’s going to take me a long time to get over his loss, and worse, face the fact that we’ve been fooled again by a .500 coach.

It was a disappointing loss but a great season as a whole nonetheless. Sure the Falcons are not one of the top 4 or 5 elite teams in the league but they are on their way. All you haters can put your negative spin on the performance of the Falcons and their sensational rookie Matt Ryan but Matt Ryan is the best rookie QB that has entered the league since Peyton Manning who did not make the playoffs his first year and threw over 20 interceptions.
Any naysayer now has no clue what it takes to have a winning season in the NFL let alone becoming a playoff team. For the first time in years I am looking forward to the Falcons season next year and that’s saying quite a bit.

They were supposed to win one game this year. Quit your whining and just be glad that they had a heck of a year. Peyton Manning and the Colts lost yesterday too. The Colts were probably the hottest team in the league. That’s what happens in the NFL. You have one bad game and you are done. It’s not like baseball, basketball, and hockey were you can have a bad game and it’s no big deal because you play again the next day. In football it’s one and done. The Cardinals didn’t play that great but their defense stepped up big time. Tip the cap to them and next year hopefully the Falcons can get a home playoff game because the team was so much better this year in the Dome than on the road.

I’ve been a Falcon fan now for 3 years and I understand where you’re coming from the way the team has been letting us down. We just don’t need another arrogant QB, it’s detrimental to the teams performance as he proved in this last game. Sometimes a persons head can get so big that they fail to see clearly and think the hype can carry them to victory. We’ve both been proven wrong. It’s time we just face the facts. Until this team can work out it’s inner turmoil issues, we’ll be facing the same thing year after year. NO MAN IS BETTER THAN THE TEAM!

Oh i looked for your post and you haven’t been there because we were winning every week. This no talent Matt Ryan on only did the following in his Rookie year. Won more games than vick did in any year except 1 (vick had 6 years to do it), started his rookie season in all games, had a better QB rating than Vick ever did , took the Falcons to the playoffs in his Rookie year, won Rookie of the year, took over a team that the Con Vick and Petrino left in terrible shape. All these falcons haters need to move back to the State they came from. None of you know Vick. He wasn’t a Quarterback who could run.
He was a halfback who could throw. He was playing the Qback position, but that didn’t make him the Q anymore that if he was playing Center.
If we had put in a regular, good quarterback, with Vick behind him in the backfield, then we would have five superbowl rings.
There’s no way to defend against two passers who can also run. Vick was a better runner than most running backs.
Mora simply didn’t know what to do with the miracle he had in Vick.
Vick. Every step he took pummeled the defense’s moral. As he penetrated enemy territory racking up mortal yardage at the cost of so much of the other team’s spirit, I felt football fever faster than I’ve ever felt it before. He was wonderously impossible. He was playing in the wrong slot.
It’s like when the Chinese invented gun powder and only used it for firecrackers, instead of bombs, with which they could have taken over the world.
Remember that. It’s a way to understand the Chinese today. They feel cheated and wont hesitate to cheat to get the standing they should have earned when they alone had gunpowder all those centuries.
Vick will be back, and some smart coach will use him as a running back and then watch this guy tear the league up.
Vick. Call me.

VICK SUPPORTER 2… c’mon, man…
* A N S W E R* these questions…
1. How many regular season games did MV7 the rookie play in?
2. How many did he win?
3. How many playoff games did the vaunted MV7 win in his rookie season?
Even with your limited math skills, you can add those answers up.
Matt Ryan is ALREADY more the quarterback Atlanta needed than Vick ever provided. The only thing MV7 brought was his running ability, because his limited aptitude meant defenses CERTAINLY didn’t have to worry about being outsmarted by the corn-rowed-one.
This is what’s wrong with some of our society… some folks idolize criminals, those who skate by (or leave school early), have the rules bent or the playbooks dumbed down for them… only because he “represents” their skin tone, their hairstyle, their musical preference, rather than the man inside themselves.
Real men do their jobs, do them well, practice hurader, study more, and better their communities in the offseason.
The vaunted MV7 was sneaking pot through airports and hanging dogs that didn’t fight well enough for his posse.
When Atlanta has their back-to-back winning seasons, Ryan will have done something MV7 never did; when Atlanta wins an NFC championship, Ryan will have odne something MV7 never did; when Arthur Blank, CMS and Matty Ice hoist a Lombardi trophy up in celebration (in less than 3 years, I predict), they’ll all have done something ol’ “cold sore corn-rows” never did.
Those that idolize that thug felon are pathetic. I pray you aren’t raising kids.

It obvious after the loss the teams need to upgrade on defense and on the offensive end a pass catching TE and maybe a offensive lineman or two. Vick was never a qb and after 3 years of being a jailbird he never will be. you cant take qb rating from a few games and compare them to someone else over a 4 year span. The question is how many yards did Ryan throw this season, how many TDs/Int, what is completion percentage, and what is his overall QB rating? Look that up and compare to your “sugardaddy’s” first year and then say something??? VS2 you are an idiot!! so is any other that wants to change the subject of the blog to a felon….

The Falcons have the major chunks in place with Ryan, Turner, Abe, Sam Baker, Roddy White, Jonathan Babineaux and Curtis Lofton. That’s a great start. Throw in role players such as Michael Jenkins, and a fruitful draft class beyond Ryan, Baker and Lofton that included contributors such as receiver/return man Harry Douglas and defensive back Chevis Jackson. The Falcons have the nucleus for a very good team.
Now, it’s time for Smith and Dimitroff to add some more pieces and try to make this a great team.

He was running around getting sacked, and lost a fumble for a long touchdown. Urlacher I think it was? MV7 flat out sucked. Rookie year anywhere near what we just witnessed from Matt Ryan…No Way.
I remember watching the Green Bay playoff game while up in Canada. Afterwards we all thought this was the beginning of something very special. Hype was in full force….but not for long.
We all know how the Vick era ended. You can blame the fact Reeves was fired, the Mora era, etc. But the one common denominator was Vick. He was simply too short and could not read defenses. Either he was too dumb or too lazy and stoned…who knows, who cares now ( except you and a couple of others that spew their hatred on the ajc blogs continuously) but my bet is a combination of all of the above. The guy was just a WASTE of all his god given ability.
He should have taken out a full page ad in the ajc apologizing to “fans” for the harm he caused this franchise. Were you guys both not angry for what he did? Or were you just angry he got caught and the price he is paying?
Enough about MV7, he is gone and if anyone thinks he is going to play in 2009 you are no smarter the convick himself! IF he does come back, I wish him well. I hope he has learned a lesson and will live a stand up life regardless of his success or failure on the field. Because in the game of LIFE, he has failed. If you care about him so much, you should be more concerned about that!
I am a FALCON fan! Have been for over 35 years when my dad had season tickets and used to take me to every home game. I want a TEAM to be proud of. I think that is what we have and will FINALLY continue to have as we improve in the seasons to come. It should NEVER be about 1 or 2 guys alone. Look at the Cowboys this year with all the ME, ME, ME crap!
I am proud we have a young, intelligent, hard working QB now that will spend the necessary time working to better himself and the Falcon franchise. He no doubt is no Vick and I am very grateful for that fact!
Happy 2009 To All! ( yes even vs and vs2!)

“1. How many regular season games did MV7 the rookie play in?
How many did he win?
How many playoff games did the vaunted MV7 win in his rookie season?”
If you are gonna compare Matt Ryan’s rookie season to Michael Vick’s rookie season, it’s only fair to note that Vick had two years of college experience in a non-pro style offense, while Ryan had three years of college experience in a pro-style offense (he sat on the bench his first year). It’s deliberately misleading not to mention this fact. Adjusting to the NFL style of play is a lot easier when you are already accustomed to running a pro-style offense.

Ah, get off your high horse, Jeff. If Roddy White catches that long pass, it could have been a different game. Erase the fumble, we win. If Keith Brooking didn’t suffer a brain anneurism on the 3rd and 16, they punt and I KNOW Matt would have led us to a TD. Sure, the play was sloppy as hell. The refs refused to call a dozen offsides on the Cards. But just a couple of things corrected and we are heading to Carolina. It was heartbreaking but, like Ahnold said, “We’ll be bach!”

Why is everyone talking about Vick when coach smith just got out coach by a real BOMB!! Cardinals coach had the Edge on the bench for Hightower when clearly he was a better back. Coach Smith only cared about Matt and not the rest of the team, Because from the start of the game he wanted Matt to throw into the record books he had no game plan to run over this Cardinals defense. Again when turner running abilities help the passing game.Coach Smith SUCK!!Period

I really dont know who the bigger bozo is, Convick Supporter 1 or 2?. Both you assclowns are living in this dream world. Do you realize that just because the jailbird gets out in a couple of months doesnt meen he will ne cleared to play by the NFL! Cant you two jumbo lipped baboons get it through your thick heads. He will be lucky if he is ever gets to play again. You keep saying 2004 and counting. I have one question for you, Whos was the QB back then? Convick, thats who. Well, its all water under the bridge now, because convick will never play for the Falcons again. You two jags can put that in your dope and smoke it

@Davenpoop, You say it it is unfair to compare Convick and Ryan in college. Okay, maybe Ryan had the edge, it wouldnt have mattered anyway because convick was way to dumb to run any kind of offense much lass a pro style offense. Could you imagine that mental midget trying to run a complicated offense, please! News flash it takes brains to be a good qb in the NFl, something convick lacked very much. All of you convick supporters need to get a grip. Vick was average at best, once teams figured him out it showed. He may have beated Green Bay in the playoffs, but he did lose to them a couple of years later in the dome when the Packers were like 2-11. Vick must have smoked dope before the game, or maybe he lost a bet on one his killer dogs. Remeber this, the guy is a DISGRACE!!!

Bottom line is that in the NFL, it’s really tough to win if your D can’t control the line of scrimmage. Your offense has to play an almost perfect game, and we were far from perfect. The game wasn’t nearly as close as the final score shows. Arizona was in control for almost the entire 60 mins.

I don’t see anyone else mentioning two plays or non-plays, that I thought were HUGE.
1.) Biermann - not laying out for that punt!!! With proper technique, aiming for a target, he would have had the ball off the punters foot.
2.) Arizona’s invisible timeout. 2nd half, right after fumble return. Turner has a huge lane, is going to easily break into the secondary and the refs blow the whistle!!!! I ran this through the HD dvr like ten times. No player called time. The NFL should have cameras showing the entire sideline and coaching staff.

Oh, I am so DISAPPOINTED!!!
Now that is said, I would like to say Congratulations to the Falcons for a wonderful and exciting “rebuilding” year.
Congratulations to Matt Ryan for Rookie of the Year honors.
Congratulations to Coach Smith for Coach of the Year honors.
Congratulations to the fans for having something to cheer about for the first time in 4-5 years.
And, of course, congratulations to Vick Supporter 2 for finally getting 1 prediction right. Aw go on. You deserve it buddy.
We have a lot to be proud of, despite our quick exit from the playoffs.
Now if I had to point a finger for the loss….I would have to say that it was because we overachieved in a rebuilding year. The only other cause would be the lack of “off-sides” calls by the refs (our friends all year). Yes they called a few. They had to, since the Cards were in the backfield before the ball was snapped on every single play (see botched hand-off deflected to Cards defender). But, as in every game this year, it’s useless to complain about such things.
Looking forward to next year! VS2, keep those superior prognostication skills razor sharp! We’re gonna need ya’ next year, buddy! Thanx for bein’ our good luck charm!

To Derek uhm no vick didn’t lead us to the playoffs his rookie year but he did his first season as a starter for the falcons in 02 and won there first game and in 04 they won the divisional game without a line so every vick hater just stop. But enough said on that I doubted the falcons this year but win ryan threw his first touchdown I knew we had something. Me this playoff game was crap defense looked soft cb’s was getting beat I mean dang this to me was the easiest season we had and if our defense can’t start shutting down a team running game thing we will NEVER have any success because Matty and Turner won’t be getting it done with out a defense that can stop a Edgerin James. Take the game against the rams they couldn’t put a hand on Steven Jackson come on. On the positive side they exceeded my expections so after a couple of adjustments I see the falcons coming up big next year if everybody stays healthy. Let’s get rid of Kieth Brooking plzzzzzzzzz I know I’m not by myself but the hometown boy gots to go.

“News flash it takes brains to be a good qb in the NFl”
Really?
This, to me, is the biggest misconception about football. What aspect of playing quarterback requires great intelligence?
Do you really think Tom Brady, Joe Montana, etc. could have gotten into highly regarded colleges and received degrees if they were normal people who couldn’t throw footballs? Do you really think these gentlemen, if they applied themselves, could perform tasks at a high level that actually require intelligence? Like, oh I don’t know, designing a bridge? Performing a surgery? Prosecuting a criminal? Running a business?
I completely agree that Vick probably wasn’t the brightest bulb in the box. I have never tried to defend his intelligence. To me, though, intelligence is irrelevant when it comes to playing QB. The so-called mental aspects of playing QB, which mainly involve reading defenses, are developed by studying film, which anyone can do. TV personalities like Ron Jaworski like to play up the importance of “intelligence” in playing quarterback because, well, they were quarterbacks, and doing so makes them look smarter to the average viewer.
If you want to criticize Vick for not studying film, I can’t contradict you because I have no idea what kind of work habits he had. But intelligence? Who cares?
If intelligence really mattered for playing quarterback, Ryan Fitzpatrick and Jay Fiedler would have made multiple Pro Bowls, having attended Ivy League schools which don’t give out athletic scholarships and actually require their athletes to have achieved academically.
If intelligence really mattered for playing quarterback, the QBs who achieved highly on the Wonderlic test (such as Alex Smith, who got a 40) would consistently outperform QBs who get low scores (such as Brett Favre who got a 22 or David Garrard who got a 14).
Sh-t, if intelligence really mattered for playing quarterback I’m pretty sure many of us posting on this blog could probably get an NFL job right now. I’d be willing to bet the average person posting on this blog is smarter than the average NFL quarterback.

By Najeh Davenpoop, great post about the mental aspects of being a QB. It is more about instincts than anything else. It does not take a genius to study film and see another teams tendencies, expecially if you have been playing and learning a game since age 6 or 7. Matt Ryan is missing the most important aspect and that is a big league arm. When most of us started off playing football in rec. league the kid that became QB was the one who could throw the ball the farthest. Matt Ryan cannot consistently fit the ball in a tight window when there is decent coverage on the WRs his deep balls float and flutters. He has been exposed. Also if he is so intelligent why is it they had to go to his old college offense. If he was so smart he should have been able to learn a new offense. That fast start to the season will hurt the Falcons in the long run. You Falcon fans will expect bigger thing next year and you will be oh so disappointed. Matt Ryan will continue to struggle next year the way he did the last 3 games of the season and that play-off game and the Flacons will not make the play-offs, expecially if they lose Mularkey and Musgrave.

This team accomplished so much more than anyone could have predicted that we should all be quite happy with them. Dang it, we actually made it to a playoff game and, with just a little luck, would have won the division.
Yeah, it stinks to lose to Arizona in the first round, but that’s why you play the game. As someone else posted, that team is a pro team too and they sure had a lot to play for, plus some obvious breaks, that made it their day.
There seems to have been a lot of picking on Brooking. Give it a rest, people, he’s one guy. I can think of two plays where he got beat. 21 other guys play at a time and every play counts. Today was just someone else’s day.
Congrats to the team, Coach Smith, Blank, Dim, everyone. You gave us a good product this year and something to look forward to next year!

As much as we all would have liked to see a playoff win by our birds, we ALL knew the reality was that the Falcons were knocked out of the playoffs when Jon Kasay kicked the winning field goal against New Orleans the week before.
If we won the division, we would have had a great chance to win the home playoff game, and possibly win the nfc championship if it somehow worked out to be played in the Atl and so on.
But there was no way we were going to win 4 games in a row on the road, period. The NFL definitely needs to consider the playoff format, as it is extremely unfair to reward a team like AZ for mediocrity, and allow them to rest players down the stretch because of their pitiful division, while teams like the Falcons fight for their lives.

The falcons DID win that game. It’s like in “No Country for Old Men”, when the sheriff told the story of a man with a gun who only had to shoot a steer in the head. The steer was hanging by his hoofs from the rafters, yet still managed to start wiggling around so that the shot went awry.
Smith simply stuck with a game plan that was obsolete in the first quarter. Running Turner after they squashed him? Not adjusting to the defensive linemen outside who were sticking to their gaps?
Smith is either crazy or he got paid off by the mafia.
The Russian Mafia, you know, the same guys who forced wallstreet to become crooked. Doesn’t it seem like the Russian Mafie is running everything financial now?
The falcons won, smith refused to secure the victory.

To the arizona guy who said the Falcons were overrated. WTF?? We should have been playing this game at home but because the NFL rewards the division champion with a home playoff game you get a home game which was your only chance of winning a playoff game against anyone. Let’s face it your brand of football is not going to carry you very far. We were 11-5 in perhaps the toughest division in football and you were 9-7 in the worst.

The only dissappointing thing about this game was that the Cardinals were NOT a good enough team to beat us, we simply beat ourselves. I’m not the uber-optimist who thought we could have gone to New York and won…we arent to that level yet. Offensively, we are doing fine. Could we use and upgrade or two on the O-line and a receiving threat at TE? Sure. Howver, this crap about Joe Flacco being the better pick is just the Vick lovers having their day at the real fans’ expense. If we had a Defense who had 35 takeaways in the regular season…I tend to think we would have won 2 or 3 games that slipped away. And that would have meant Home Game. Instead, twice now we handed the other team possession with 4 minutes left to go in the game (at NO and at AZ) and never saw the ball again. We also allowed the 31st and 32nd ranked running teams to run at will on us in consecutive weeks. That in mind, I’d hope to see our 1st round pick spent on DT or OLB, and use some of our Vick-free cap room to pursue another vet at LB and secondary. Bart Scott is rather tantalizing. This isn’t a Madden game you can’t just build a team of rookies. We NEED Veteran leadership still. Remember the last 2 years of the Mora regime? We had nothing but youth, with no example setting leaders, and we flailed about aimlessly down the stretch. Milloy is still a great leader. He knows what winning is like. Brooking I’ve always been a fan of, but he made a rookie like mistake on the last play of the game. I don’t think thats something the coaches or players will soon forget.

Hey Falcons fans who just read Jeff’s column: I was crushed when your team got Matt Ryan, who was exactly the quarterback the Jets needed. Jeff can say whatever the hell he wants about this game, Ryan, or the Falcons, but guys like me are thinking damn, what I wouldn’t give for Ryan, Turner, Abraham (whom the Jets foolishly let go), and a season like Atlanta just had. And anybody who wants Vick back and isn’t thrilled with Ryan is REALLY out there!

For those of us that’ve been Falcons fans since they came to Atlanta, this game was a comfort. The Falcons looked just like the team we’ve supported for the last 42 years. A team with no running game suddenly develops one against the Falcons. A team that hasn’t been able to stop the run for an entire season shuts down the Falcon’s run game with ease. A Falcons team that’s spent the entire season playing coverages suddenly forgets where they’re supposed to be. An offensive line that’s played well for the entire season suddenly can’t block anyone. Yep — just like the Falcons of old, they laid down for an important game on a national stage. On a positive note: The cardinals fans (posting here, anyway) think they won this game in a dominant manner. That’s funny — but not nearly as funny as watching them get shredded next week. (That’s another benefit to being a Falcon fan: watching them instill false hope in bad football teams.)

I think bigeasy had a point cause they did expose the heck out of Matty simply because he doesn’t have that arm and they had to back to that college offense at Boston but it still go back on denfense they can’t stop runs and the corners are to small dude and we have silent linebackers we need major moves on defense and just adjust this offense and I don’t hate Kieth Brooking but he’s gotten to old for me he should have been gone 2yrs ago and he look confuse on some plays.

Final Critique 2008 NFL Draft. Why did we waste such a high draft choice on Sam Baker, when there were better OL in the draft. He does not have the S and Q to play tackle in the NFL.Started in a playoff game and the flaws showed up.He was replaced and Falcons played better. Then to compound things, started 2nd half, and same flaws showed up.Why,Why Why.Let me hear from some real knowledgeable Falcon fans. The 2009 NFL draft, has Z.Potter dl Nebraska, who would be a real find. Are you listening,Falcons Management. The foundation has been layed. Now let’s finish the job.

I knew Matt Ryan would get a pass today. He showed like he has all year long you put pressure on him he is aa below average QB. hE COMES OUT ON THE 3RD PLAY OF THE GAME AND throws a pick as he does against pressure. Also he has shown he can not throw the deep out. ANY qb in the league can sit back there and throw the ball around when the protection is there. His next play he makes will be his first. Keith Brookings, Sam Baker really were very bad.

You have to be related to Terrence Moore AND Chris Collingsworth!!
You three are a sorry excuse for sports “experts”!!
How about a little credit where credit is due? I am sure there are still those in Atlanta that think if #7 was still the QB for Atlanta they would have won Saturday and you are probably among them!
You need to be a little more objective a little less Mr. Know it all!! Go write for the New York Times you deserve each other!

As a falcons fan, I would have love for the falcons to continue; however, the bottom line is that Arizona beat Alanta…
With that being said, let not forget that even the commentators suggested that Arizona was “jumping” the ball early and no offsides were called. As far as the safety, all year long qbs have been fallen down in the endzone and throwing the ball away and yet when Ryan was doing the same, a safety was called. What about roughing the passer, where was that penalty.
Regardless of what happen through the game, this being call or that being not called, Atlanta had chances to win the game…
Again, the bottom line is Arizona beat Atlanta…
My wish list for the Falcons…continue to get better offensively and upgrade the defense. Possibly get another d-lineman opposite Abraham; Anderson might not be the right guy and maybe get some taller corners who are physical at the point of attack with receivers…Most receivers hate being jam at the line of scrimmage.

As much as I hate to say it people in atlanta are shady first ya’ll dog the heck out of vick and then when u finally see what matt ryan is you get mad this is what most people wanted was that great white hope. Now how many times have we seen matt ryan go deep not to many times because we don’t have a receiver like a Moss to get open fa the deep ball now it goes both ways our QB and Reciever now personally we only have a run game Michael Turner got us to the playoffs if it wasn’t fa that running game we would have finish at 5-11 seriously Matt Ryan had a couple of good games but here’s deal u shut down Michael Tuner it a wrap plan and simple.

Reciepe for handling the Golden Boy. Put pressure on him and he is a wrap. When Michael Turner does not have a good game Matt Ryan sucks and does his usual by throwing multiple interceptions. I dare any of you haters to challenge that. In the 6 games we lost there was no running game and ole Matty Ice melted.

Reason number 217 why I no longer receive the AJC daily…
This town and the AJC no longer have the soul that was Atlanta (of the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s). It’s gone.
I’m an Atlanta NATIVE, and we are few and farther in between with every new sunrise. Atlanta is now “The A T L”; with no locals/natives and only band-wagoneers.

VS2 - You say the Falcons are 0-5 when trailing…Where the hell do you get your numbers??? The Falcons were trailing against Chicago, San Diego, and St. Louis this season and beat all three. Did you dream up that 0-5 record in your pea-sized brain??? I know it’s easier to hate on Ryan with “made-up” facts than what actually happened. I think you lose a little credibility when the “facts” you present aren’t even accurate. I could say “The Falcons never won a game with Vick”, but just because I say it doesn’t make it true, so you might want to do a little research before you just post imaginary recrods and stats.

The Falcons will be the Cleveland Browns for 2009. 5-11. Write it down. Ryan has been exposed.
Flacco = playoff win in first start Vick = playoff win in first start Ryan = loss, 2ints, and a safety.
Winner = VICK Flacco = Second Ryan = LAST

Even Arthur Blank said on ESPN that he believed in redemption and if another owner called him for a reference, he would be in favor of Vick having a second chance at playing in in the NFL. I am so sick and tired of Matt Ryans cocky attitude. We had that game but let’s call it like it is, he choked big. The interviews they showed with his pretentious pompous and arrogant attitude was sickening and doesn’t represent Atlanta well. Especially after talking so much smack and getting his behind handed to him. I will NEVER refer to him as Ice no matter how hard he tries to push that out there. I don’t care if his mom, highschool, college, mailman all refer to him as his self appointed nickname. Hopefully his ego has been deflated a bit and now he can concentrate on learning how to play some real ball.

AZ won but ATL is the better team??? In what way? The falcons were beat in every aspect of the game, offense, defense, special teams, coaching, run game, pass game etc etc. That is too funny.
Believe it or not, you ATL fans shouldn’t take this loss so hard. The Cardinals are really a lot better team (at least at home) than the national media and you Atlanta residents think. They nearly beat Carolina earlier this year in Carolina and stand a good chance to do it next Saturday.
The Falcons had a good year, much better than expected. Only one team will win it all, 31 won’t. Enjoy the success and get psyched up for draft day.
And give the Arizona Cardinals their due. They won because they totally outplayed ATL, not because of the officials. There were a lot of holding non-calls on the Falcons (including the end-zone), but I don’t hear any of you ATL fans complaining about that. Bottom line is the better team won, if you played AZ again you would lose again. You had a rookie QB, AZ had a hall-of-fame superbowl MVP QB on the field. For all of you who insist that the Cardinals were the worst team ever to make the playoffs, you now have to admit that honor now belongs to the Falcons.

I can’t believe this blog. VS and VS2 were praying for a Falcon loss to stroke their egos. Atlanta had a great season for what expectations there were. Ryan didn’t have a great game. The O line had a crappy game, Turner had a crappy game, the defense had a horrible game. Abraham wasn’t a factor. Milloy got owned. Lofton and the rest of the LB’s had a crappy game. We still had a shot with 2 minutes to go! Get over it. The Patriots didn’t even make the playoffs. There have been good QB’s that had a bad game this weekend. Pennington did well all season until yesterday. Jackson had a bad game. VS and VS2 wouldn’t dare criticize him because he is black. Gee what a shock. Farve suck the JEts PO chances. Manning didn’t have a good game yesterday. Why is it always about race and the hating of a team because they would not hold a spot for an incarcerated fool. Vick was in the league for as long as LT yet his impact hasn’t been 1/2 of the impact of LT for San Diego. Now LT is probably on the wane, but at least for several years he has given more than he has taken. Can you say the same for Vick?

Ron Roberts,
So what if Vick didn’t play his rookie year? Matt Ryan is freakin 23 years old (w/ three years college experience in a pro style offense). Vick, on the other hand, was 20 yrs old when he was drafted (w/ two years college experience) and 22 years old when he took the Falcons to the NFC Championship.
What does that tell you about “intelligence?”

The Falcons had a great season in terms of preseason predictions, but had a very nice season over all. I mean no one wold have thought they would have amde it to the PLayoffs at all.
The future is very bright for Atlanta with a legit MVP candidate, ROY winner, and COY for our head coach. Let’s hope this off season is as good as the last one and we pick up some great draft choices and make some key FA signings. This town has a great team to root for and I for one can’t wait till next year to see how far we can go.

Hey VickBeliever… Vick wasn’t a good enough QB to consistantly win games on his own. That is why it is a team sport. All of the team has to show up and make a difference. A team of one or me first is destined to fail. Look at the 2005-6 Falcons. I see Ryan being like a Ben R kind of QB. He can win a game, but the results are much better when the team is doing what it is designed to do—run the ball, defend like a beast, play special teams well. We can be very successful as the GM and Coach are of that mentality.

The Falcons need to draft, trade for, steal, or conjure up some mean nasty linebackers. I cannot believe the lack of agressiveness of these LB’s. Brooking needs to retire and the sooner the better. Coach Smith is a former linebacker and hopefully he sees the passiveness of his LB’s. Gotta get some mean and nasty types that want to kick butt. He might deserve another chance but it does not mean he will be able to play in the first game of 2009 season. Remember, Tank Johnson went to jail and then served a suspension after being released (I believe it was reduced from 8 to 4 games by the commish). And it was just for gun possession. He didn’t kill dogs, lie to the commissioner, gamble on an illegal activity, and flunk a drug test (which is an automatic 4 game suspension)…

Mike Vick wasn’t getting it done in 2005 and 6. So were 28 or so other QB’s in the NFL those years. You and VS2 seem to think that the SB is the be all, end all of achivement and to fall short is failure. By that definition, Vick was a failure for his career, Ryan for this season, and Marino for his career. It is a stupid definition. Football is a team sport. Support the team. Boston continued to support the Patriots after Brady went down in Wk1. Support the Falcons now that Vick is down. Not on the field, mind you, but down by his own lunacy. It is sad that you and VS2 spew vitriol against the Falcons week after week. The Falcons did not put Vick in the slammer. P-Funk, Q, and T did it when they turned in state’s evidence. Bad Newz Kennels indeed.

Vick’s career a failure? I think not. Yes, Vick got in trouble, and he did this to himself, but you have to add the Falcons themsleves into the equation of Vick’s career. Nobody’s calling Vick a bust but the Falcons fans. A bust doesn’t have his team in contention or competitive. I guess you attribute the drop off in 05 and 06 as all Vick’s fault, but you people preach “team” on here all the time. That statement just proves my point, AGAIN, that it wasn’t a “team” when Vick played here. He was the team!!! If you’re going to blame Vick for 05 and 06, it just shows how dumb you are by putting all of the teams failures on one player. That the main reason that I hate the Falcons, they just expected Vick to do it all himself. I guess Vick had something to do with a CB (D.Hall) getting roasted on a weekly basis, or Abraham being hurt for half a season, or having a punter handle field goal, kickoff duties also. i could go on and on, but I guess all of that is Vick’s fault. Then there’s the excuse that Vick “threw to hard”, LMFAO. So what do you think John Elway did? Elway bruised people’s chest, but his wrs still caught the f’ing ball. If the ball hits you in the hands, you’re supposed to catch it, they’re pros for Gods sake, so don’t make that excuse. Man, just look at the big picture and take your “hate” glasses off. Why don’t you blame someone else for a change besides Vick? Like right now, very few people are pinning the playoff loss on Ryan. Can you explain that? What excuses do you have for him this time?

Vick Supporter, Mike Vick was the team! He was able to convince Blank that he was the team. He got Blank to fire Dan Reeves so he could hand-pick someone with an offense more suited to his style. He got Coach Mora to switch to A. Gibbs and tiny linemen, because his first couple years here the big linemen weren’t fast enough to get out of his way. He was asked which players he wanted here and which ones he wanted cut or traded. King Michael constantly had his pimply young bottomed kissed by the powers that be. Blank was his personal nurse who wheeled him around. Mora was his personal chaffeur. It is disgusting the way the front office bowed to every whim of King Michaels. But like most despots, he arrogantly began to consider himself Godlike and sank into decadence.
As far as I’m concerned, Ryan still needs a year or two to prove himself to me. But you Vick supporters are beyond ridiculous in claiming that Vick didn’t get a fair shake. If Cardinals win the Super Bowl it will only confirm how far Falcons have come this year (remember, they were still in the game with 2 minutes to go) and further validate the greatness of Matt Ryan as he threw 2 TD’s, had most completions ever by a rookie in a playoff game, and basically kept the Falcons in the game until the end…

Since when does players hire head coaches? Was he asked for his input? I wouldn’t doubt that, its like that with every star player. blank is a grown man, no one forced him to wheel him out in a wheelchair, that just goes to prove that Blank would do anything to appease his cash cow. Cmon MARS, show me some facts since you want to write something so stupid like that. i thought you knew football, but obviously you’re an idiot. I never said that Vick didn’t get a fair shake. You want the truth? You can’t handle the truth!
From the archives…
Now this is what I call “leadership.” ESPN.com reported today that Michael Vick is not very happy with the offensive play calling in Atlanta lately. In an interview with Cris Carter for HBO’s Inside The NFL, Vick said he wants to throw more. He wants his coaches to trust him so he can throw more. This from a guy who can’t complete 50% of his passes and frequently throws the ball into the turf or five feet over his receivers’ heads.
But Vick wasn’t done. It’s one thing to question the logic of the gameplan; stupid, predictable gameplans should be questioned anyway. But it’s quite another to throw your receivers, and indeed your whole team, under the bus. And that’s exactly what Vick did when he said when Carter questioned him about playing with receivers like Chad Johnson and Randy Moss:
“Or a Marvin Harrison. … I always think about that, Cris. I always think, if I played in Indianapolis, what type of effect would I have on that team? Or what would I be able to do different? It’s something I wish I could do for just one week.”
“I always think about that,” Vick says. That’s has to be the biggest slap in the face a receiving corps has ever taken from a marquee quarterback. Do you think you’d ever hear that from a guy like Donovan McNabb? There’s some similiarities here. McNabb struggled with his accuracy the first few years he was in the league, and pundits often pointed to the wide receiver corps for Philadelpha as the weak link, but whenever McNabb was questioned about his wideouts he always responded by backing them up.
You never, ever disrespect your teammates. Did Vick learn nothing from Terrell Owens the past three or four years? And what’s the difference between what T.O. said about his quarterbacks (he called Jeff Garcia “gay”, and blamed McNabb for the loss in the Superbowl) and what Vick just said on Inside The NFL?
I’m telling you: nothing. Nothing is different. In both instances, one guy is completely disrespecting his teammates and placing blame. This is no different than when T.O. said the Eagles would be better off with Brett Favre as their quarterback (the question then was phrased almost exactly as Carter phrased this one; a ploy designed to get players to open up and let their emotions get the better of them - and it worked).
Someone in the national media needs to take Vick to task for those comments. Better yet, someone on his own team, behind closed doors (preferably the receivers themselves) needs to pin him to a wall and give him a good shakedown.
You don’t throw your receivers under the bus like that.

Najeh Davenpoop, you delusional moron! My info came from the sports pages at the time, ya boob! Dan Reeves’ offense was old fashioned and he wasnt prepared for a unique talent like Vicks, as reported by AJC, ya boob! Newspapers and televisions discussed weekly the “offensive innovations” of Mora and Gibbs of getting smaller linemen so that they wouldn’t be a liability when Vick took off, ya boob! Vick wanted Bob Whitfield, one of the most beloved and dependable offensive linemen gone for this very reason. And, Vick was the person who laid down and refused to play when his buddy Mora’s job was on the line, including the after game interview when Vick announced that it was time for Mora to move on. His royal butt was kissed publicly by everyone in the Falcons organization as well as the NFL home offices, you delusional nitwit. He was wheeled around in a wheelchair publicly by Nurse Blank, and dined and playstationed w/ Mora and his children according to AJC, ya goof! This is public record, and to deny is some of the most delusional idiotic sh-t I’ve ever seen.

Vick Supporter, I don’t actually know what to point out to you! Your argument changes every time you touch your keyboard. You most certainly have and do say that Vick was never given a fair shake. It’s your daily mantra.
A couple of days ago when I tried to appeal to your better sensibilities, you had no problem telling me you didn’t give a f* what I thought. Well once I had a higher opinion of you as well. Today you have avoided it, but in recent months it was rare to see any comments coming from you that didn’t include allusions to “blue-eyed quarterback” and “my caucasian friends” (occasionally being corrected by black gentlemen who just simply disagreed with you.) Now with that being said, what makes you think I give a f* what you think about me?

WITH A VERY FRIENDLY BOSTON COLLEGE OFFENSE TO HELP THE ROOKIE QB, A RUNNINGBACK WHO LEADS THE LEAGUE IN CARRIES (2ND IN TOTAL YARDS), AND A PROBOWL RECEIVER WHO BY HIS OWN ADMISSION, DECIDED TO GET HIS ACT TOGETHER IN 2007. I’ve been saying “my caucasian friend” forever on here. People say “my negro friend” and I have zero problem w/that. The “blue-eyed quarterback” thing, I stand by that because thats whats been proven in my opinion, key word here, OPINION……You can’t tell me that white folks really couldn’t identify w/Vick, and alot of that by his own doing, but w/Ryan, he’s the tall, “blue-eyed quarterback” “pocket passer” that everyone in this town wanted.

So what about favre? he campaigned for Randy Moss too. What does that make him? Who wouldn’t want Moss on their team? I bet if Moss would have came here, you would have been happy. You people kill me,lol

From the archives, part II:
Atlanta dumbed down their offense this season for #7 . When Gregg Knapp came to Atlanta, the team started running those long stretch run plays that open up the bootlegs. They run other misdirection plays and even the option keepers out of the shotgun. Many of their pass plays are rollouts based off those stretch run plays where Vick will have one read. Their playbook more resembles a Wing T playbook you would see in highschool, or a college football offense with option keepers. Vick is a terrible drop back passer. He may be a mobile quarterback, but he has horrible pocket presence. He still LOOKS at the defensive end pass rushers, and doesn’t have a very good clock in his head as to when to throw the ball. The announcer on the game a few weeks ago pointed out that people criticize his line, but they were giving him time ( Vick just held onto the ball too long).
Did you catch that start last year by Matt Schaub? He threw for just under 300 yards ( what Michael can’t seem to do). It’s kind of funny how Matt Schaub didn’t have ” no receivers” in his start, but Michael has no receivers. You know how when a backup quaterback goes to the sidelines they usually converse coverages with the starter? Schaubb was just jogging to the sidelines that game and talking with coaches. Vick was standing near them all quietly. I honestly don’t think he understands all those coverages, if he did, he certainly didn’t offer any help or opinion. I’d believe that Vick doesn’t understand coverages because he’s always on the bench by himself inbetween series. He just sits on the bench catching his breath with this blank stare on his face. This year, sometimes I see Gregg Knapp on the sidelines next to him shoving screen shots into his face trying to coach him. It’s a different picture than a Peyton Manning. You can always find Manning or Brees on the sidelines looking at ariel overhead shots trying to figure out what happened on the last series. There is so much going on every NFL play, that you can’t possibly dissect it all live. Manning and many of the good quarterbacks are trying to figure out what happened, so they can prepare for next time. Vick just sits on the sidelines with his head inbetween his legs waiting for his next turn.

The only part of what you said that was publicly reported was that Blank wheeled him around in a wheelchair. The burden of proof is on you to show that everything else you said is true. Show me the link(s). I pretty clearly remember everything that transpired at the time and at no point was Vick shown to have even been consulted in the coaching search.
When your life has descended to the point where you have to make false statements about people you don’t know to make yourself feel better, you need a job, a girlfriend, therapy, or all of the above.

It’s like talkin’ to a child, I tell ya’!
I’m tired. As a Vick fan, I was hoping that the Falcons would prosper under his leadership. Alas, for whatever reasons you insist on believing, that didn’t happen. Thought I disagreed with the choice of drafting Matt Ryan, wonderful things have happened this year. Is this proof that Ryan is the QB of the future? Only time will tell, but I will at least give him as much support as I did Vick at the time. That means he’s my QB, better or worse. I am an Atlanta Falcons fan. Should Ryan blow his chance, I’m not going to defend him either. I’m looking forward to brighter tomorrows.

Roddy White must go! Im sick and tired of him dropping game changing passes when he is wide open, and the most irritating thing he does not do is,. make a play to stop the other team from intercepting a pass. He just stands there and watches. Roddy you can knock the ball down or even get a pass interference penalty. Roddy White is not a BIG GAME receiver.

VS - Vick may have had his best season—IN HINDSIGHT—he thought that he would get even better. He thought coaching was holding him back. Really it was his abilities. A yard is a yard is a yard. Whether you earn it running or passing, it is the same distance on the field. Where did his total production fall compared to other QB’s? In his best season he earned about 3700 yards. In 2005 it was around 3400 yards and 2006 around 3700 yards. They were above average numbers certainly. In comparision, in 2006, Peyton Manning gained 4400 yards and Eli Manning threw 3200 yards. Drew Brees threw for 4400 yards in 2006 as well. Vick was exciting but only winning 50% of the time. When Vick goes to another team, will you root for that team and eschew the Falcons? How sad for 1 person!

From the archives, part III:
SUSSEX, Virginia (CNN) — Suspended NFL quarterback Michael Vick must adhere to tightened restrictions after he tested positive for marijuana use, a federal judge said Wednesday.
Suspended Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick tested positive for marijuana in a September 13 drug test. Vick tested positive for the drug on September 13, a court document from the Eastern District of Virginia shows.
As a result, U.S. District Judge Henry E. Hudson ordered Vick to “submit to any method of testing required by the pretrial services officer or the supervising officer for determining whether the defendant is using a prohibited substance.”
Those methods could include random drug testing, a remote alcohol testing system “and/or any form of prohibited substance screening or testing,” the order said. Vick, 27, must participate in substance abuse therapy and mental health counseling “if deemed advisable by the pretrial services officer or supervising officer” at his own expense, the order said.

Well, it appears ajc doesn’t let me post messages with links anymore. I typed up a nice little response to you, mars — complete with a link to an ESPN article about Dan Reeves’ firing — and ajc conveniently didn’t post it. Clearly that means you probably can’t post messages with links either, so I guess I can’t expect you to back up any of your statements.
I still can’t find anything anywhere confirming that Vick had any influence on personnel decisions or coaching hires during his time in Atlanta. But if you really think Vick ran Reeves out of town, type in “dan reeves fired” in Google, click the first link, and check out his quote. Doesn’t sound like someone so thrilled about Reeves’ firing.

Just the facts, ma’am. Just the facts.
Jeered lustily as he headed to the locker room tunnel after the 31-13 loss to the New Orleans Saints, the Falcons’ fourth consecutive defeat, Vick reacted by lifting the middle finger of his left hand, and then his right hand, to the fans. The image was captured by network television cameras and replayed several times Sunday night. It very quickly became the preponderant subject on Atlanta talk radio Sunday evening.
