Tech ‘lost by knockout’

One month ago, Georgia Tech won a football game in Athens that was considered such a significant moment in its history that players snapped off pieces of the hedges, seniors voted for the final score to be inscribed on rings and the head coach was given a new contract with a 53 percent pay hike.

I’m not sure exactly what happened between Nov. 29 and Dec. 31. But that must’ve been some pothole they hit on Northside.

Playing a bowl game two miles from campus, the Jackets seemed intent on smothering any life they had breathed into the program and the fan base. They followed a 9-3 regular season and a sweet month of post-Georgia nirvana with a 38-3, mother of all meltdowns to LSU in the Chick-fil-A Bowl at the Georgia Dome.

This game was supposed to be a reward. It turned out to be some bad acid flashback to bowl flops of years past. But at least back then, the Jackets suffered their humiliation in Boise and nobody really cared. Or noticed.

“We got out played. We got out coached. It was a pretty good beating,” coach Paul Johnson said.

He summarized things nicely. If only his team was that efficient Wednesday.

Several weeks of hearing how great they were must have eroded the Jackets’ focus. Johnson never came out and said that, but he commented: “Clearly, we weren’t ready to play. So that comes back to me. But clearly they were bigger and faster than us, too, if I was watching the right game.”

He might be right. But after so many self-inflicted wounds, most people stopped watching.

It didn’t start well. Tech’s Scott Blair knocked the opening kickoff out of bounds, giving LSU the ball on the 40. The Tigers drove to a touchdown in three minutes.

Suddenly, it was like somebody kicked opened the lab door and a mutant virus escaped.

In a span of about 14 minutes, the Jackets were outscored 28-0 — and if only it were that simple and painless.

They were penalized for roughing then passer to kick start a 76-yard touchdown drive in less than four minutes; napped through an ensuing LSU onside kick; fumbled a punt return; allowed another touchdown drive (then again, the Tigers were on an implausible third straight possession); watched as the LSU quarterback, Jordan Jefferson, completed his first nine passes (Still with us? Get ready. Now it gets really stupid.); sprayed lighter fluid on this inferno with an ill-advised fake punt on fourth-and-8 from their own 22 (I’m assuming that didn’t trigger an incentive clause in Johnson’s reworked contract); allowed a 25-yard touchdown pass for a fourth score; gave the Tigers a short field with a short punt and a long return and then folded for a 17-yard TD run.

I tried to figure out a way to abbreviate that sequence. But it would’ve been like trying to get the full flavor of what the Wicked Witch’s flying apes did to the Scarecrow’s arms and legs and stuffing by saying just, “Well, he lost by knockout.”

Johnson again: “We self-destructed.”

This is the same LSU team that lost its final four SEC games — including one to Arkansas, which should count twice. The Tigers’ only victories in the final six games came over Tulane and Troy.

The Chick-fil-A bowl figured to be a huge letdown for the Tigers from last year’s BCS title game. If one team figured to lack motivation and focus, it was LSU, not Tech.

Oops.

What happened doesn’t erase the first 12 games. It doesn’t erase the wins over Boston College, Clemson or Florida State, or blowing the doors off of Miami and Georgia with a combined 86 points.

But it did take you back — back to a time you didn’t want to remember.

I remember reading an AJC article about how CPJ though bowl games were a reward, and he gave his players some time off.. and I remember thinking that doesn’t sound like a good idea to me. From what I hear, Les Miles ran his bowl practices like camp. Probably last time CPJ does that. I’m still proud of the team, believe in CPJ, and am happy I spent the 8 hours driving down to watch the game in person. GO JACKETS!

That was painful. Seeing the mass exodus after Tech’s failed 4-th down conversion to open the 4th quarter was reminiscent of past Falcons games, except there were more fans in the Dome tonight than for Falcons games of the past.

Our only enjoyment came in seeing if someone from the upper deck could throw a paper airplane onto the field. What an utter joke and a waste of a New Year’s Eve.

Uh, “blowing the doors off of Miami and Georgia with a combined 86 points”?? Lets not try to include Georgia in that ‘Miami’ game, Jeff. I know it sounds cute, but Tech won by 3 to Georgia. Not exactly what I would call ‘blowing the doors off’. Georgia played horrible in the 2nd half, obviously they thought they had the game under wraps. UGA needs to take a hard look at their Defensive coaching motivation. This LSU game shows that. Nuff said.

The silver lining to this dark cloud is that Tech won’t be overrated at the start of next season. It’s always better to see Tech exceed expectations and rise in the rankings. Next season should be a blast, even better than this one was up until tonight; and overconfidence will be less likely to be a problem, including the coach’s.

Disapointed? Yes we are, but down and out, no we are not. 16 underclassmen starting tonight, able to sign the full number of recruits next year and all that makes 9-4 not too shabby. Tech has been playing all year with the usual list of injuries on top of being short 10 in the total number of atheletes. All this and winning with Chan’s recruits looks encourgaging to me. What say you?

GT must worship UGA for them to make a ring over one game. They should practice for 11 weeks and play that one game. Obviously, they put soooo much into their jubilation in victory over the Dawgs, they didn’t stop to think they still had to play another game. See how proud they are now…..

It has been laughable the last month as the nerds have come out of the closet after the gift-wrapped win over UGA.

My, have times changed…. The chicken bowl only reminded everyone that GT played their best game of the season (no mistakes vs. numerous ones by UGA) as they eeked out a 3 point win in Athens. That “display” tonite proved once again that the stumbling, bumbling, fumbling insects can only win if someone hands the game to them.

P.S- make sure you include tonites score on those pinkie rings. Only the nerds would stoop so low, or is it rise from such low depths? as to even think of the brilliant idea of having team rings when you didn’t even win your league championship. BUSH LEAGUE, lol.

I would say act like you’ve been there before, but naturally most would have to say they hadn’t in a long time.

Interesting that so many “dawg” fans have so much to say…still doesn’t change the 45 to 42 score. Also, it appears GT was 2-1 against the SEC this year, downing Ms State and U(sic)GA. It’s a shame UGA fans don’t understand simple logic. I guess I missed their bid to the BCS championship game and Stafford and/or Moreno’s Heisman awards….Oh yeah..I have a life.

Sad,,,, sad,,,,, sad,,,,, sad and pathetic. Oh yeah,,, embarassing as hell. I know it isn’t very far,, but after that effort,,,, I hope that every one of the Jackets were made to walk back home, including the Coaches. Not a single one of the Yellow and Blue earned the right to get on one of those luxury coaches and take that 10 minute ride back to campus.

Looks like it might be pretty ugly with the dawgies visit the flats next year.

Ugly, sad, pathetic, lame, embarassing, down right one of the worst games of football I have ever seen.

Poor effort and shows the Jackets are still a young and inconsistent team. The good in this is that there will be no over confidence going into 2009. There’s still a lot of work to do if the Jackets aspire to join the elite.
Time to get grounded again. As a Tech fan, I feared that we might still be a little too giddy over our victory over a mediocre UGA team with a not so good defense.
The potential is there and the foundation is being built, but still lots of work and refinement to do on The Flats. I still believe there is much reason for optimism for the future. Congrats Jackets on a good season in which you exceeded everyone’s expectations. Now lets take it to the next level in 2009 ! For you Dawgs on here spitting venom all I have to say is…45-42. The Tigers earned their right to roar, but you lost your barking rights for at least a year, so deal with it.

Thanks son, for trashing the only tradition that we have ever had on the flats against UGA. At least Georgia held us in esteem for something. Now they have a disapointing year and we choke in the ACC, and we compare that to national championships (RINGS) because their defense couldnt stop Buford.

Theron Sapp. Look at UGA’s record in the 50’s, they sucked worse than we have lately. Thanks for reading books other than those of strength of materials and statics.

Congrats to Tech on a magnificent season by their standars. You beat Georiga (by 3) which was apparently your only goal. Until you realize that the season is 13 (or 14) games long, you will continue to be an after thought on the college football scene. Beating the Dawgs is only important to you. No one else cares.
By the way, no one is insulted by your rings. You are being mocked. There is a big difference. Clearly, the Georgia fans have more respect for your program than your players do. Georgia fans weren’t so shocked by your victory. Maybe they should have been?

To the Tech fans pointing out the 45-42 thing: Yeah, Georgia’s defense sucked that day (well, half). A month earlier, Georgia scored 52 on LSU in Baton Rogue. New Year’s Eve, Tech gets 3. Georgia doesn’t get rings for winning regular season games because, well, that’s bush league.

I warned the bees about giving extra money to a coach that won nine games (nine!) with a gimmick offense. LSU tackled, so LSU stopped it. Have fun NOT winning 10 games, bees!

2 things Roger

1) UGA fans are not upset about your pinkie rings, we are laughing our AZZES off. Don’t forget to add the bowl score to your historic, non-championship rings. What will be next, championship belts like the pro wrestlers wear?

As for Theron Sapp, that was 60 years ago, back when GT was decent consistantly instead of today when your team has a decent year every 8 years or so.

2) As for our game with Bama, at least we showed some balls and fought back in the second half and made it respectable instead of lying down like GT did tonite.

Unbelievable! How can you even suggest a loss to Arkansa should count twice? This is the same LSU that has been tryin to find a QB all season after losing soph national champ QB.

LSU plays in the SEC, NUFF said. The best conference in college football.

SEC has 8 teams in bowl games with 7 to be played after New Year’s Eve. That’s parity at its finest.

Have you did any research on LSU’s stats in bowl games, vs. ACC opps, playing in the GA dome? All factors you must consider.

GA Tech is a good football team that went up against an avg SEC team(this yr) with a great program. This is the same LSU team that lost 3 games with poor QB play. This is the same LSU team that very well could be playing in a BCS bowl game if not for poor QB play.

GA beat LSU by 2 TDs. GA had 2 pick 6’s given up by LSU QB. GA Tech beat GA & thought it was the Sugar Bowl. Winning big games like this is life in the SEC week in and week out.

So, the preparation will always be there for an SEC team to succeed in a bowl game as every team is battle tested.

Ga. Tech was overachieving all year. They were able to get by week to week by confusing defenses who only had a week to prepare for their unusual offense. However, given a month to prepare, LSU came ready to cover the option offense. Then it basically came down to talent and LSU obviously has the advantage there. I still think PJ is a good coach, but what was he drinking tonight when he ordered that fake punt. Worst coaching call I’ve seen all year. I think that was the biggest game PJ’s been in yet, and he tensed up, just like the rest of the GT team. No one will be upset, Jeff. There is no such thing as a Tech fan, just people who hate Georgia. Even after they beat the Dawgs this year when I tried to congratulate some of their “fans,” they were so filled with bile and hate toward Georgia they couldn’t even enjoy the victory.

Congrats on a good season Jackets fans. Not bad for the first year with a new offense. Last night was just a poorly executed game for your boys. The rivalry is renewed in this state. Tech’s losing last night does not take the “sting” out of the Dawgs loss.

LSU played well on defense, and Tech gave up some cheap touchdowns with turnovers. C’est la vie. A disappointing end to a good year. Georgia fans may try to twist this into a win for the SEC, and by extension, them, but it wasn’t. In fact, it should make them feel worse, but that’s logic and that’s not what Bulldogs fans excel at, is it?

Second tier teams celebrate regular season wins. It was a down season for UGA even though they may win 10 games. That’s the difference in First and Second Tier teams. Wearing rings with a regular season score on it is pathetic. Giving your coach a pay raise because they beat the in-state rival for the first time in 8 years is a pretty good indicater as to where your program is.

By mighty mike

It’s always the same thing with Georgia fans. Second tier team, my big old butt. Georgia Tech is as first tier as they get; just look at the history. But if Georgia Tech is, in fact, a second tier team, whatever that means, Georgia is a second tier team in many ways. Ranked number one, blessed with uber talent and a great coaching staff. Three losses.

MIKE.. Lets look at the history, georgia leads the series with tech by 20 more victories and have dominated the series since you guys left the SEC in the mid 1960’s.

the rivalry is pretty lame for many years.you have a great coach but one win in eight is not very good!

the state of georgia is the fourth best nationally in producing high school football players, tech should be very competitive ,but try to expand your goal more than just beating georgia.

there is no reson why you can not be competitive with all of the resources in the state and around the southeast.

What a GREAT game! All I have heard for a month is what a powerhouse Tech is, how they are unstoppable, etc, and the “fans” have once again appeared out of nowhere. Last night they got put in their place! Guess they aren’t quite the team the media, the coach, and the players made them out to be! Way to go Tigers, and especially, SEC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Poor old “Pudgy” Paul Johnson. I really felt sorry for him last night. Standing on the sidelines all game long with a look on his face like his A$$ was eating up the seat of his britches. Oh, Well. I guess old Paul ain’t such a hot coach when the opposing defensive coordinator knows what he’s doing. He damn well better get used to it. No national championship ring in his future. Hell, maybe not even an ACC one.

The nerds and the media have acted for a month like the win over a very average UGA team was a blowout. (For Tech, I guess a three point win was a blowout…). The fairweather Tech fans have once again crawled out from their hiding places, same old same old. The best part about this whole thing has to be the rings the Tech players got..because of a win over GA? Is that really the only thing you have to aspire to? Sadly, it is. That got a HUGE laugh out of UGA fans, so thanks for that! Last night came the biggest laugh of the season. After hearing the media and the fans hype up these dorks for a month, LSU put them in their place from the first minute of the game—UNRANKED LSU. Way to go Tigers! And yes, great win for the SEC (especially since the ACC is so mighty… right?!?) HAHAHAHAHAHAHA

This one was really painful, just like the UNC game except against better athletes. Some of us tried to warn those that were squaking about a Tech rout that LSU was talented and hungry. They beat us at every phase of the game —except for Morgan Burnett who was terrific.

We still need to recruit some quality linemen, both o and d, and dbacks. We can’t run the offense when their linemen are in our backfield before the play gets going. And we have to be able to defend the pass better, both by putting pressure on the passer and not letting the receivers run free without a defender within five yards.

Question. Does anyone know if Tech plans on redshirting Luallen, and how well Washington is progressing?

Lets finish the recruiting season strongly.

The problem with this game for GT is that now this defensive strategy is on film. Even that idiot of a DC over in Athens can copy and paste this…that is the problem with this type of offense in college football and why no one runs the wing-T, wishbone, or any kind of option offense…with good defensive scheming and the athletes it really won’t last. My prediction is Paul Johnson won’t be around long there in Atlanta…Cheer for the Gators!

Plain & Simple;we did not show up for this game!!!! Clearly LSU is the better team & we lost horribly!!!! But I still & forever will be a TECH FAN & I love my yellow jackets!!! We still have the best coach in the ACC & we have such great guys on & off the field. To all these GA fans writing into our blog..what do your players do outside the gridiron? I know, they get drunk, assalut people & get thrown in jail! What do OUR BOYS do off the field? They help others during the holiday season, they take time out of their lives to help the needy of Atlanta & they actually graduate & become a member of society!! A GA grad ,( well they hope to graduate!) tires to make a living in something besides football. Thanks GT & thanks Paul Johnson for a great year & we look forward to next year!! GO JACKETS!

To all Tech alumni and fans, we must remember that this is a very young team, none of whom were recruited for this type of offense; that our quarterback, for all his capabilities, has one glaring incapability, which is passing the football; and that we don’t have the full allotment of scholarships back yet - hopefully this will all improve next year. We had a much better season than any of us expected, and while this loss is bitterly disappointing, we shouldn’t hang our heads in shame or let anyone tell us we should.

To all 14 UGAY alumni and their 3 billion redneck, trailer-trash HATERS/fans, you can all bite me!!!! Your football factory will continue to be a football factory as long as the NCAA allows academically under-performing high school football players to matriculate at your feeble excuse for a university. Does UGAY still offer university-level courses in HOUSEHOLD KITCHEN TECHNOLOGY like they did several years back when one of your star basketball players Terrell Bell was trying to remain academically eligible? Imagine the pride he must have felt when/if he passed that course!!!!

To HUMBLED DAWG FAN, are you the only UGAY fan with any sense and reason around here? It sure seems so. Thanks for the kind words - you put it just right, without any hate - there is no reason to hate each other - this should just be pure fun - it’s just football, and it doesn’t mean anyone is better than the other when your football team wins.

I think Georgia Tech’s season was over after Georgia game? That game was just too big a win. But, I think having rings made up was wrong (and a waste of money), same was the “after we beat LSU” crap I read from some Tech fans in the blogs. Does everyone realize we play Georgia next year? Some of my best friends are Georgia fans. Sure, I’m disappointed about the LSU lost … but happy with the win over Georgia. Next year maybe fans will keep their mouths shut about how great we are and just show it on the field. This comes from a Georgia Tech fan since childhood. I am nearly 70 years old, and have seen most of the “great” teams Ga Tech has had, also the bad ones. P. S. I’m most unhappy with the fake punts in our on territory AND the “going for it” on 4th down than anything else.

Best thing that could have happen to Tech. Now they will be motivated for next year and stop listening to all the unrealistic press clipping. It killed Georgia who had a very similar game against Alabama with a lot more at stake and it killed Tech with all it’s team returning next year. You almost wonder with the relax way CPJ practiced compared to LSU and the ridiculous fake punts and the out of bounds kickoff all very unlike him that he didn’t almost do some of this to get the silliness out of the system. I tell you one thing the Georgia win was real, and this season was real. There is no high expectations now for next year, so it is back to us against the world, I like our odds.

If the Dawgs had a better than average coaching staff (particularly the defense) GT doesn’t win that game in Athens. CMR can certainly recruit but he’s a bumbler of a coach on big game days and Martinez is qualified for a high school job. Les Miles just showed a masterful job of coaching his team for a specific goal - stop the CPJ spread. They shut it down like a steel trap. All the special teams muffs (2 in the first half, I believe) were just gravy. GT was headed for an SEC bayou boy a55-whuppin with or without special teams play - LSU’s defense had their number.

What most outside the LSU community dont realize is that LSU’s problems this season started with inexperience at QB. Last night LSU showed that it ook a little hile to develop a QB and just what that means to the team and its performance. Just wait until Russell Sheppard arrives and you boys better get ready because LSU wont be in the Chick-Filet Bowl next year. Believe it. Miles is loading up andalready has a stockpile of great talent in Baton Rouge. This game was more like the real LSU team without a bumbling idiot at QB turning the ball over 2-3 times a game. see ya.

Over and over, LSU players and coach Les Miles credited the Tigers’ scout team after LSU’s dominant, 38-3 laugher victory over the No. 14 Yellow Jackets and their triple-option attack in the Chick-fil-A Bowl at the Georgia Dome.

“Jhyryn Taylor and Stevan Riddley were the scout team tailbacks we practiced against,” defensive MVP Perry Riley said. “They were great. They were faster than Tech’s backs.”

The Difference in the SEC and the ACC is substantial. This bowl game looked like a game between a small college team and a weaker NFL team…..

This will be a best seller for years to come. Every Defensive Cordinator in the Nation will want to watch it. You play it the way LSU did and the QB has to make all the plays. Josh can’t throw it(You also need Receivers) & Johnson can’t wait to sit him down for good. You follow the assignments & you may still get burned here & there, but if you have the Coaches & Players, you beat Tech. Georgia is going to have the Players, every year.If you have a Moron for a Defensive Coach, you don’t prepare correctly & you lose. Georgia deserved to lose, but I doubt the bees would want to play them, 9 more times this tear.

Hey DMan, we do own the Dome. Both of them. Here and in LA. You have selective memory my friend. I seem to recall an LSU butt whooping of UGA on the way to our first crystal trophy. You forgot about that one uh? Oh yea, and we won there last year on the way to our second championship in 5 years. Forget about that one also? How many does UGA have my friend? ZIP. Never will Richt is a puss.

And for all those that busted on Miles for throwing deep and attempting fake punts. That is what a real coach does when he has confidence in his team. LSU may have been down this year but watch out, we will be around for a long time. Hey Stafford, go pro. you also Moreno. Take the money. You will never accomplish anything in college in that program.

Paul Johnson did a great job with Tech during the regular season, I have to commend the coach and the players. I think last night Paul Johnson had a brain fart (going for 4 and 8 on their 20) this was plain stupid. I think the players throught they were unstoppable because they had a good year. Well team you might have learned a good lesson, the season isn’t over until you finish the bowl season.

If the SEC is so much better than the ACC, then why is the head-to-head record 6 and 6? 3 of the SEC’s 6 wins are by Alabama and Florida, which are far and away better than anyone else in either conference. The SEC can say that Vanderbilt beat one of the teams in the ACC championship game, but the ACC can say its worst team beat Vanderbilt. The SEC is just the ACC with 2 great teams.

As far as the rings go, UGA retired the jersey of someone who broke their drought against Tech and nothing else in their career. We were humbled last night just as UGA was humbled against Florida. It will probably help both programs in the long run. Tech has been too full of themselves the last month, and UGA was too full of themselves up to the Florida and Alabama games. Let’s see how both coaches respond to these disappointments.

If this isn’t proof that Willie should be fired, I don’t know what is! It shows just how bad Georgia’s defense really is when LSU, A TEAM GEORGIA BEAT BY TWO TOUCHDOWNS, destroys Tech and their high school offense.

Enjoy the victory over us for almost another year. Pay Back is coming nerds and you’ll hate us even more when we ruthlessly rub in your face.

This game ended a 2008 year on a great note. Even if Georgia loses today, Tech was exposed as the fraud of the team I said they were the whole time.

Gee.. Wonder what the rings for the bowl will be? You going to put 38-3 on those too? You bunch of idiots, spending more time worrying about your ringer finger size for a 3 point victory over UGA, when clearly Tech got lucky and UGA missed a couple of crucial tackles and fumble and still almost came back to beat you. Looked to me last night like the lil bumble bee’s should have been concentrating on playing LSU, not still daydreaming about a 3 point victory that happened over a month ago. Even a blind squirrel gets a nut every now and then, Tech got thiers with a 3 point victory last month. Enjoy the nut.

Mark the date, 12/31/2008, this will be the last time GT loses as they go UNDEFEATED in 2009! LSU won the game, but two dropped touchdown passes in the first quarter decided it! This team cannot blow two scores like that and overcome mistakes after that! 14-7 instead of 3-7 at the end of the first quarter would allow room for error! LSU didn’t stop the offense, they played from ahead which is when they win games! Great call by Miles on the onside kick, but no class in the fourth quarter as he threw bomb after bomb as his frustration mounted after the great goal line stand by the Jacket defense and his offense’s inability to score! It was LSU’s night but next season will be GT’s! The offensive linemen and backs are flocking to the Flats as they know the future is very bright!

The best thing that came out of last night’s game is LSU discovered we do have a real QB even though he was supposed to be redshirted this year. I’m certain if we’d played Jefferson earlier in the year, UGA and several other teams wouldn’t have had their wins. He can throw, he can run, he can think quickly!

Not the outcome anyone would have liked to see; but all in all, a great season, Georgia was beaten and that’s all that mattered this year. Defense played great considering time on the field. Special teams and offense units still young and piecemeal at best from Chan era. More good things will come to those who are patient to wait.

Dawg fans have to pile on since they sucked this year after being preseason 1.

Tech always loses to LSU Tech always loses Peach Bowl/Chick Fil A Bowl

Jackets should not have gone to this bowl, that is no reward for a good season.

Sometimes you can outsmart yourself. There was all sort of emotion in the Dome, then Tech wins the toss and defers. Maybe they wanted to put pressure right away on a young qb. But it seemed the Dome atmosphere got deflated right away, it would have been a better decision to receive and keep the emotion of the fans up and get into the game RIGHT NOW.

Again, after the game against Georgia, this may have been a bit of a letdown….

For Charlotte Dawg and others who see this game as such clear evidence that Tech’s offense is so pitiful — not so fast my friend(s). Any offense whose o-line let the opponents’ d-line get into the backfield before the play even starts is in for a hard time. This applies to passing offenses as well as running offenses. The question for the future will be if Tech’s present o-line kids can get bigger and better and/or can Tech bring in some o-linemen who can hold a good d-line out. That will be the answer to the question of whether or not the offense in itself is a good one or a bad one.

Trick offenses can only work so long. When you’re playing at Navy and your opponents don’t have the resources to game plan, that triple option works just fine. This season, Johnson’s offense was new to the ACC and he caught a bunch of teams unprepared. Not so with LSU. They had plenty of time to scout GT and they easily figured out how to defend against GT’s running game. And now the blueprint has been handed down to every team in the ACC. Johnson had to be a smart a* after the UGA game and laugh at people who said his offense couldn’t win. Well, who’s being a smart a* now? If you Tech fans were expecting an ACC title next year, you might want to rethink that notion. One dimensional offenses don’t cut it in the big leagues. Maybe it works for Navy, but when you’re playing the big boys, talent wins.

After letting the game sink in (getting over the emotional pain of a horrible loss), something seems quite clear. LSU was a superior team, and also answers a big question about the SEC West next year. I’d put good money (if I gambled) on LSU to be the West champion over Alabama. With the emergence of that freshman QB, LSU has the ingredients and talent to make another run for the SEC and National Championship. It also brings up another point in football, and that is the QB is the most important man on offense and maybe the whole team. The selective quality running and pinpoint passing of LSU’s young QB was the difference in the two offenses. Tech could not play run over pass, and when they did, LSU’s passing killed them. Applying this logic to Tech, they have QB with athletic skills to run, but most of the time he can’t hit his grandmother in a wheel chair. I’m afraid that LSU’s quality defense set a pattern for beating Tech next year as well. They used a nine man stacked defense, and forced Tech to win through the air and they couldn’t. LSU simply pulled out the architecture to stop the triple option, the same one that stopped Oklahoma and Texas, so many years ago.

I have had bad dreams of the return of Chan Gailey… A listless game played by players on vacation. There was a time when Georgia Tech had the highest winning percentage in bowl games in the country. Now? It’s a reward to the players and the team plans to open up with a passing game? What is that? 90 minutes of practice instead of the usaual 120 minutes? LSU practiced extra hard to beat the Tar out of the Jackets. Shame on you Georgia Tech.

LSU smacked Teck in the face all nignt long, the jJackets were overmatched. Tigers bllodied the Bees nose then sat on their face. SEC rules PERIOD!. What people just can’t seem to realize is that all SEC teams spend their season beating up on eachother and thus the 1 to 3 losses on most SEC teams record. And the worst part is that the SEC just got much stonger and more competitive with the new coaching changes that were made recently. Acc and the rest of the other conferences better wake up, the SEC will be even more dominant next season.

By TechFan

January 1, 2009 11:40 AM | Link to this

Oh Billiebee nailed it down. There’s a reason Oklahoma and Texas, and many others stopped using the triple option in the 1980’s, and that’s because the defensive schemes forced them to. Don’t you think that all of the coaches in the ACC will study what LSU did. Now that doesn’t mean you stop using the option play, but not as a primary weapon. West Virginia was the best at mixing the pass and option, and it took them to 4 straight wins in 2 BCS games, Gator and in this years Mieneke Bowl. It works when it’s used correctly, but they also proved you have to be a competent passing team.

Getting back to LSU, now they have that QB that can run their offense, and enough talent to win against any team next year. I would not be surprised if they knock Alabama out of the West championship and play for the SEC title. I know I wouldn’t want to play them next year. You can’t make up for speed, size and talent, and baby LSU has it all.

Us Dawg fans are glad to know that Ga. Tech’s only goal of the year is to beat UGA. Maybe if Ga. Tech had spent more time on the pratice field and less time in the jewelry store, they would have had a better chance against LSU. But, as you stated your game for the year was already in the record books against the Dawgs, therefore this bowl game meant nothing to the Tech faithful. “Defence played great”? 38 points and if ref’s hadn’t slowed the game down in the 4th with all those holding calls on LSU this score could have been 52. Or did you mean LSU’s defence played great, holding the triple headed monster of an offense scoreless in the last 3 quaters? If Tech would put as much prep into playing everyboby else as it does the DAWGS it would be a much more balanced program. Tech fans claim to be the no.1 team in the State of Ga. this year, you did not represent us well at all against LSU. Don’t think the DAWG fans are all that dissapointed though.

Thanks Sautee dawg, you brought a good argument to why Tech played badly, plus you highlighted the many reasons Tech’s priorities are all wrong. I like to beat UGA, but getting to ACC championship and Orange Bowl is my priorities as fan. Somebody needs to pull the coach and alumni financial supporters together, and show them what happened to other teams with a small perspective. This isn’t new, if Texas A&M loses all of their other games, but beats Texas, they have a good year. Tech needs to build a quality team capable of beating any opponent and set the priority to win their conference and higher if they can. Some of these old crony alumni still thinks Tech is in the SEC, and that was a long time ago. I said a long time ago, that the best thing for both teams (and fans) is stop the state war over that one game. Come on UGA fans, wouldn’t you rather beat Florida than Tech. I know I’d like to see Tech beat VTech, FSU and Miami more than just beating UGA. If we get together and have a week of smack before and after the state game, that would be great. But after that, let’s get to our real priorities, and that’s winning conference championships and BCS bowls. No more rings or retiring numbers for winning that stupid game. FSU and Florida have this relationship, and it’s about time we do to.

It seems that Tech players began to believe all the hype about themselves. The LSU defense was far better equipped to shut down the run than UGA’s. They had meat in the middle and speed on the ends and in the backfield. Just showed how anemic UGA’s defense was this year. It was an amazing total Tech shutdown on offense and defense. I don’t know if it was as much the great LSU play as it was Tech was completely flat. They beat UGA and that ended their season. The Christmas break shut them down.

Just to point out something about GT offense in that game. I think GT had 3 possessions in the 1st half. First two resulted in 3 points. This was mostly to do ineffective attempts at passing and the fact that our offense was rusty and unprepared for this game. Next time the offense touches the ball we are down by 3 touchdowns (this is after the two special teams bludners). At that point the team stopped caring. They weren’t especially motivated before the game, then getting slapped around by halfway through the 2nd quarter caused them to give up. Saying that this game can tell everyone how to stop the option is like saying looking at the GT/Georgia game can help SEC teams run up the score on Georgia. Sorry, college football does not follow the transitive property of b******.

Coaches set the tone. When Johnson decided to designate a bowl game as “a reward”, with practices cut short so the guys on scholarship could “have fun” then the fun began for LSU.

How’s this for novel: do what you do best (run and play D) and keep YOUR MOUTH SHUT, INCLUDING RINGS (wait untilafter the SEASON—-bowl records count).

What is really sad is that the highest goal Tech has is to beat Ga. If Georgia went into a season with its number one goal to beat Tech the AJC writers would make such a joke out of that. We set our goals a little higher fortunately. It wasn’t the Ga players or coaches or even the fans who said Georgia was number 1 before the season began. So why not skewer the writers who said that rather than the team. We lost 2 games to arguably the number 1 and 2 teams in the country and then had a bad game an lost to a Tech team who played way over their heads on offense, yes partly because we were so bad on defense, and we scored 42 and still lost. So get over it. Georgia had a pretty good team and will keep getting better. And Our coach doesn’t let his ego make him try to prove his offense can pass without a passer or a passing offense like CPj did last night.

There was a time when bowl games were only rewards. The stats applied only to the particular bowl; the game didn’t count in the W-L record; and the game didn’t impact the final standings. That’s all changed. Coaches can no longer treat bowl games simply as rewards. There’s too much at stake. So, Les Miles runs a boot camp to get ready for a bowl game; that’s what it takes to win. Paul Johnson’s in the “big leagues” now. He’s got to coach like it.

when I was a boy Coach Dodd used to let me stand on the sidelines during home games….so I tuned in at 730 and was so disappointed to see the Yellow Jackets, after playing so well and looking so streamlined against Miami and UGA in great looking uniforms, take the field in depressing lifeless uniforms….(yes I understand they had no choice over the color of the jersies) I turned to my wife and said, no way they will win tonight looking like the Swiss Guard from the Vatican, with sick green/gold pants that when combined with a non matching shade of gold helmets, made them look like Ronald McDonald….if you’re gonna wear dark blue jerseys, at least add some emotionally uplifting contrast like the white pants worn against Miami and UGA….the 90 National Champs wore that combo and it looked classy and stirred the emotions…no wonder the guys didn’t play well, I wouldn’t have either if I was asked to wear a clown suit…

You gotta admit one thing: Those are the ugliest uniforms this side of the Mississippi. I remember being a young boy in Albany and always waiting for the Sunday AJC so I could look at the pictures from the Tech game. I always loved their uniforms. What happened?

Oh, the game was an absolute embarrassment. Plus, it shows what most informed football fans already knew: a well coached defense can stop a team that can only run the ball. Of course, the UNC game had already showed that. Scoring 45 points against the worse UGA defense in memory is not something to get excited about.

Tech played very poorly, but the worst parts of attending the bowl game formerly known as Peach was having to hear Ernie Johnson, Jr., before the game, listen to some chicken cook attempt to play the trumpet, and then watch Gov’ner Goober deliver the game ball in an ugly automobile. Everywhere one looked there was a corporate logo. We even had to sit through commercials on the big screen TVs during timeouts even though tickets were $80 each. I will never be back.

So Tech lost to an SEC team. So what? The only real school in the SEC is Vanderbilt. (It is too bad that the ACC fell victim to the football mentality and let in teams like FSU and Miami.) Few of the fans of SEC schools attended the school they cheer for; most did not even graduate from high school. At least we know that we have an education.

I get tired of hearing about ACC vs SEC. In regular season ACC one that battle 6-4. Georgia Tech after this bowl is 2-1 against SEC after this bowl. We dominated UGA in the second half on there field and we killed Mississippi State. After the bowl games ACC is 6-6 against the SEC. The SEC was the best conference last year. Florida is probably the best team in the country this year, but the rest of the league drops off from there. Tech got dominated, but that is one game. Look at all the rest.

It’s been great to see all of the ga fans after their absence for the past month. So ya, we got killed. I’m pretty sure we all know that. The only bearing it has is that CPJ is gonna be out for blood next year. This doesn’t change the fact that nearly all of our starters are back next year. Next year is still gonna be great. But are your lives really that uneventful, is your time really that worthless, that after we are beat by LSU that you come on here to brag about how they won? I really have to laugh at you all so much. And the funny part is, football is almost over. What are you ever going to do with yourselves for the next half year? Put all of that time into doing something productive? Thanks to some for their classy comment. It’s unfortunate that they are far and few between.

See this is principally the difference between Tech fans and U[sic]GA fans… Tech fans, while witnessing a loss of this magnitude is no doubt frustrating, will go on about their lives and in two weeks be essentially indifferent to this. U[sic]GA fans (as well as most uneducated rednecks that are rife in SEC country… Vandy aside) will do nothing but dwell on this and obsess about this outcome for months, or years to come. LSU came to play, whipped the Jackets, plain and simple. It’s one game… on the whole this was, unambiguously a very successful season.

And to all you are so immensely preposterous to think calling Tech fans “nerds” is in some way hurtful, have you not understood we take great pride in our nerdom. After all, we design the trailers you live in, the machinery that cuts the pigs feet you consume, and the location of the Wal Marts you work. The explanation for this loss….not the “excuse”… is that the Tech offensive line of mostly freshmen and sophmores was overmatched physically with LSU’s seniors. The triple option has been “figured out” for years. It is the ability to execute that makes it work. Add to that horrific special teams play and a ill-advised fake punt. Tech did not catch a break and LSU exploited weaknesses and mistakes well. Tech defense played better in the second half (only 3 points and a goal line stand). LSU played as they are capable like they didn’t do against Georgia. Congratulations Tigers, you were the better team. In the pre-game radio show, Wes said that when he looked at LSU’s roster he saw the neucleus of last years NC team and didn’t know how they lost 5 games. If any of you Dog fans want to argue, I don’t get in braying contests with jackasses, but admit it, losing to us bothers you way more than you’ll admit. That’s why you try to dismiss the ring deal. We didn’t retire anybody’s jersey. You can’t stand it. If you’re a hater, feel free to hate on me.

SEC Pride is stupid—Sorry to confuse you with a Techie, but it’s true That after one of the Acc teams wins (I think it was FSU but not sure) they were chanting ACC, ACC, ACC which I see nothing wrong with. I think pride in your conferance is OK. In fact, although I am a Georgia, SEC fan, I still pull for ACC and southern teams against northern teams. It’s not that I hate Big 10 and Pac 10 teams. I just take pride in my region too. You can bet I was pulling for Miami in their game. And I actually was pulling for Georgia Tech also. I will pull for Texas, Texas Tech, Alabama and Florida over their opponents I favored Penn State over USC, but mostly for the respect I have for Joe P. Jeff…3 point win by Tech over UGA is a called “Blowing the Doors off”. Hoss you need some serious creative writing classes.

Tech Fans… WOW….guess instead of play the bowl game, the tech team was thinking about those rings for a 3 point victory over UGA after Tech losing the last 7 years. Guess if you win an ACC title( has that ever happen?) you will all want a Cadillac.

Tech is so dominant. A three point win over Garner Webb, a three point win over Georgia, a beatdown at the hands of LSU.

Hell even Chan Gailey did not lose by 35 points. Even Reggie Ball did not lose by 35 points. They suxed too…but At least they tried…at least they were competitive.

Yes you guys really showed your guts by coming out and not showing up in the second half. Yellow through and through! But I know you guys consider 9-4 to be a wildly successful year. Yeah break out those GA State championship rings. LOL.

9-4 for Tech…get out the rings boys and party. UGA 10-3…and we are disappointed…because we believe our team should be out for the hunt every year.

After reading the box score, I was surprised that the yardage and other stats other than turnovers and points scored were so close. I thought we were being hammered on the ground/air as well. Which gets to two primary reasons we may have lost or game not being better. First the turnover/mistakes two of which lead to TD’s in the second quarter, that’s 14 points. Second Tech has to get a better passing completion ratio which we have’nt had since 2001. 8 of 25 can easily be turned into 15 of 25 for another 100 to 150 yards of offense. Between those two we’re looking a very strong program.

This game made me chuckle….the media made it sound as if LSU shouldn’t have even been allowed to play on the same field as GT. Atlanta media had insinuated GT was going to score 35 before even stepping on the field. Just because they beat UGA for the first time in 7 years? Please. UGA’s defense was deplorable most of the year .Guess the Jackets read the hype and believed that garbage as well.

I actually read a report today saying GT was still the best team in the ACC. Really? They certainly looked horrible at “home”, but of course there were more LSU fans at the game!

By GT66

Tech needs three things to fix three serious problems. We need a quarterback who can throw accurately (we must have that option to keep teams off balance), we need a new defensive coordinator (just look at what Bud Carson did in one year under Dodd to our defense and what he did for the Steelers three super bowl wins), and a new punter and place kicker. Scott is a very good athlete, but a very poor kicker and punter. He only averaged 39 yards for the season with no hang time and he was even poorer kicking off and kicking field goals. I have never understood why coaches do not recruit with a scholarship great kickers. They try and get by with walk ons and that has cost us dearly. I am certain Dave Wommack is a great guy, but I think our talent on defense should have produced much better results.

By Keeping It Real

January 2, 2009 10:56 AM | Link to this

Now everyone knows just how far Tech is from the big time. They do not have as many athletes as LSU. Brains and high SAT scores will not win many football games. Thats just how it is in the real world.

What’s this, “let’s not let the bowl game overshadow a good year?” Do you live in a fish bowl? GT gave the ACC the most humiliating loss of 2009. The worst excuse of a bowl game out of ALL the bowl games. The ACC coach of the year REWARDED the ACC with the with his best coaching effort of the year. The coachs and players should give back to the university 1/13th of their respective salary/tuition for not showing up for their most important game of the season. Players do get paid, like professionals, with payment being free tuition, room and board instead of a paycheck. Thanks you all for taking the ACC DOWN to your level in ineptitude. Thanks for taking your REWARD to a new low.

Dear Chik-fil-a Bowl Chairman,

While LSU appreciates your Bowl’s hospitality and Atlanta is a wonderful city, your continuing contract with the ACC is a concern for me and I expect other SEC teams who may be unfortunate enough to have to play a lesser than expected opponent. As you know, your Bowl gets the #3 ACC team and the #5 SEC team. One would think such a match-up would be at least competitive or at least I thought so until Wed. night with about 55 minutes to go into the game.

We at LSU look at bowl games as an opportunity to play a good team at the end of the year as a starting off point for spring practice and the next season. To be blunt, we could have played any number of local high school teams and been challenged at least for a quarter. As it was we essentailly prepared and travelled and really didn’t play in a game any reasonable person might call football. I would call it more of a snuff film actually. Frankly, I am concerned for the physical and mental well-being of the opponent and I am afraid that an SEC coach could be sued by the Humane Scoiety or taken to the Hague for violations of human rights should such mismatches be continued. Counsel for the LSU Athletic Department cited at least 34 examples of conduct that would be considered torture under the Geneva Conventions in the first quarter alone. He asked me to write this letter and to notify certain interested parties so as to avoid furture liability for what may be considered cruelty by some observers.

The fourth quarter fake field punt was an unfortunate by-product of this mismatch. And please don’t blame me for that. I had given up actually coaching and was drinking adult beverages beginning sometime in the first quarter. One of our coaches had pulled a seven year old wearing a LSU sweater out of the stands at the begining of the fourth quarter and turned it over to him. Turns out he was a little more agressive than we had anticipated. Sorry about that.

In any event, the bottom line is that the SEC #5 team is clearly disadvantaged by playing the ACC’s #3 team and that needs to be addressed ASAP. My thought is to open it up to bowl qualifying teams from the WAC or the Mountain West or Conference USA. The #5 team in any of those conferences would clearly be superior to what we saw on New Year’s Eve.

I appreciate your listening and addressing my concerns.

Sincerly,

Les Miles

I was disappointed Tech never showed up for the game. If they had, it would have been a very good game and I truly believe Tech would have won. They screwed up and they will not forget the lesson. Even after this loss however, I will take our team, our coach, our year over anybody else commenting on this blog. We still have a 9-3 regular sesason, a 45-42 win on the mutts, a coach that most colleges envy, a 6.2% special admission over 73% like UGA, the highest SAT rate of BCS colleges, a tradition rich in history and we own the state bragging rights. with daughter-in-law at Texas, Go Longhorns and THWG!!!

” cant spell pathetic without tech”

prime example of the stupidity lingering around athens. usually in these kind of things the word has to be spelled out in the word. ( like your stupid “sugar without UGA”)

and if im correct, GT is 2-1 against SEC schools this year. and UGA is 0-1 against ACC. SEC RECORDS AGAINST THE ACC THIS YEAR

S.C. - (1-1) Vandy (1-2) they lost to DUKE Miss. State (0-1) UGA (0-1) and florida destroyed miami and FSU so telling me that the ACC cant compete is total BS. you UGA morons can think of all the excuses you want for the tech game, but a loss is a loss, and you got outplayed by a “weaker, ACC team”. Dawg fans will say that the tech game was just “a bad game”, well guess what? the LSU game, just a bad game folks. LSU showed up, tech didnt, tech made mistakes and LSU capitalized, it was shear domination. and let me explain one more thing to you doggies, i can count about 2 or 3 good teams in the SEC, the rest are trash. so quit telling me how amazing the SEC is when teams like vandy , carolina, and miss state are getting blown out by tech, duke, and clemson.

by the way, the tide got rolled against the utes. the UTAH UTES. theyre in what? the Mountain West? hmmmmm interesting. cutting the legs out from under ALABAMA and the almighty SEC.

Two things:

1) A common thread in the three bowl games that mattered most around these parts is that the winners all needed the win more than the losers to validate their seasons and their programs: GT/LSU, BAMA/ Utah, and UGAY/Michigan State.

LSU and UGAY needed the wins to redeem themselves for such disappointing regular seasons, and Utah needed their win to prove that they indeed are a program and a team that is on par with the other national powers.

GT’s validation came from beating UGAY earlier this year - we didn’t need to win our bowl game for that. And to those who say the win was a fluke on our part, I would say it was more a CHOKE on UGAY’s part. Clearly UGAY’s team and program are better than Tech’s - you just choked when it came to crunch time, because you couldn’t handle the thought of losing to us and the grief you were going to have put up with if they did - a classic CHOKE in the “classic city”.

2) All you Tech haters out there need to understand that your hatred doesn’t hurt us, although it is distressing to see people so consumed by hatred. And I know that you think that we are just as bad, and we may be - but methinks most of that is in reaction to the hatred coming from UGAY fans. YOUR HATRED ONLY HURTS YOU IN THE END. The truth is most people who hate and disrespect other people have no love and respect for themselves.

I grew up being fans of both teams, but I always wanted to and did go to Tech. I still am a fan of UGA and the program, and I want them to do well when they are playing anyone but Tech. We can and do coexist and can be fans of both teams until we play each other, but hating each other is just not necessary and can be quite destructive if it gets out of hand. I have good friends and family members who are diehard UGAY fans, and we have a good time with each other when we play each other.

You UGAY fans who come on this blog and write such hateful things about Tech fans should really think long and hard about what you say and how you say it, because it really can only hurt you.

BCS fiasco…Here we go again. Penn State, Alabama & Texas Tech have been exposed as pretenders. Who have Florida & Oklahoma defeated. Florida…Alabama and a loss to Ole Miss at home. Oklahoma…Texas Tech and a loss to Texas on a neutral field. How can these 2 teams be playing for a national championship? What an exciting end to a college football season we could have with USC, Utah, Texas (providing they do the predictable and beat Ohio State) and the winner of Florida/Oklahoma playing for the true championship. The only people who will believe that the winner of Florida/Oklahoma is the national champion will be that team’s fans. What a travesty and it goes on year after year.

The only ‘figuring out’ that was done was that if you have superior personel and a month to prepare, then you can stop the triple option. Of course if you have superior personel and a month to prepare, you can stop any other offense too.

The best team won. Grats LSU. GT will just have to keep working hard and try again next year. GO JACKETS!

Surely having a score placed on a ring is no more inane than writing a song about winning a football game and giving only one member of that winning team credit for winning the game. As for Coach Johnson, I imagine that next time he’ll seek help on how to prepare a team with a long lay off between games from the SEC coach of the year. Mark Richt knows the best way, play a team like Michigan State or Hawaia and not one like West Virginia.

Give the UGA fans some slack. I know it eats me alive to think we haven’t won more than 5 national titles and only one sense 1990. UGA hasn’t won that trophy sense…1980 and this was believed to be THE YEAR. LOL Stafford will look good in that Lions uniform next season while Moreno gets slapped around on another mediocre NFL team. GT should be proud of their season. Winning in Athens running a new offense with a team loaded with Freshmen & Sophomores is something to be proud of. These recruits weren’t even brought in for this kind of system. Not to mention our O-line was horrible and plagued with injuries that forced our O to be one dimensional. This was UGA’s ONLY chance to tie GT’s streak of 8 CPJ will force UGA to worry about the team in Atlanta. This offense will only get better with time and the right recruits.

P.S. Congrats to LSU. They showed up to play and we DID NOT. We played the same way against UNC, and Gardner & Webb. You can get away with that against those squads sometimes but NOT an SEC team. The SEC is still the best conference and I hope the ACC returns to form or GT joins the SEC like the old days. It may be some 6-7 win seasons but it will pay off in time. 45-42 preseason # 75 in Sports illustrated beat the preseason # 1. NUFF said. See you dawgs on our turf in November ; )
