Now batting eighth, the Atlanta Falcons

And now for the Tuesday Countdown:

10 - The Falcon will be in the playoffs for the ninth time in 43 seasons. They’re batting .209, or eighth in the order. But say this for the Birds, when they get there, they usually do something.

9 - Got up this morning, remembered I was out of coffee and remembered I was supposed to blog (bad combination). But I did a little research this morning. (It happens.) Did you know the Falcons have won at least one playoff game in five of their eight postseasons, which is pretty impressive for a franchise that generally goes dormant in January.

8 - Look at the last three playoff years. 1998: Won the division, earned a bye, defeated San Francisco and Minnesota in the NFC, made a Dirty Bird dancer of Dan Reeves, then lost to Denver in the Super Bowl. 2002: Went to Green Bay and handed the Packers their first postseason loss at Lambeau, then lost to Philadelphia in the divisional playoffs. 2004: Won the division, earned a bye, annihilated St. Louis, then lost at Philly for the NFC title.

7 - Then again, there was that 12-4 record and NFC West Division title back in 1980, which gave way to a 30-27 first-round home loss to Dallas. But that was so yesterday. I mean, look at the Cowboys now.

6 - It was minus-8 when I left Minneapolis Monday morning. I couldn’t feel my toes until halfway over South Carolina.

5 - I’ll have more on this later today, but Evander Holyfield is upset about the decision that saw him lose in to WBA champion Nicolai Valuev Saturday in Zurich, Switzerland. The problem, of course, with trying to protest a decision is sanctioning bodies like the WBA answer to nobody. And their offices are in Panama and Venezuela.

4 - I guess Brett Favre is still immune to criticism because the only guy catching heat for the New York Jets’ funny collapse is coach Eric Mangini. Today’s back page of the New York Post had a picture of Mangini with the headline,”Win Or Else!” The back page of the Daily News had another shot of the coach with the headline, “Win Or Take A Hike!” Newsday merely advanced the story: “Cowher Power!” with a picture of, duh. And what of the saintly Favre …?

3 - Try this: In the last four games (three losses), he has one touchdown pass, six interceptions, nine sacks and a QB rating in the 50s. The four defenses he faced were Denver, San Francisco, Buffalo, Seattle. No greatness there. Favre has worn down. He has no arm left. He is making bad decisions. So why is nobody scolding him? Too afraid to admit it was a lame decision to bring him in?

2 - Richard Carrion, the IOC’s finance commission chairman, admitted the IOC has about $4.8 million at risk in Bernard Madoff’s alleged $50 billion Ponzi scheme. The IOC’s most powerful Dept. of Slush Funds, Payoffs and Acquisitions is still calculating the impact.

1 - The Braves sent me a unique holiday card that could be unfolded and turned into wrapping paper. Of course, there was no pitcher inside.

As a loooong time Falcons fan, I still occasionally cry about that 1980 playoff loss to the Cowboys. That was probably the strongest Falcons team ever. They should have one that game, but just didn’t get it done.

I think the team that often gets overlooked is the 1991 Wild-Card winners (from the Glanville era). That was a highly underrated team. They beat New Orleans in the first round and gave Washington a better game than anybody else did that year. They might have won if they had not had to play on an extremely sloppy field.

One playoff year followed by five sucky years has gotten pretty old…..Sure hope this new regime gets the Falcons into the playoffs more consistently than the past ones have. I think they will.

The Falcons will do some serious damage in the playoffs. Especially after the game against the Vikings, they showed their ability to play on the road in which many people had doubts towards the beginning. The Falcons have a very good chance at winning the game against St. Louis but not certain after early in the season St. Louis handing a loss to the Cowboys 34-14. Now Favre is having those end of season moments that he had last year, he is saying all this stuff about last this and last that and it is causing a distraction to him and his teammates which may or may not be the reason for his downfall in these late weeks. Favre needs the win this week over the Dolphins to prove that he is still able to keep up because stopping the Dolphins right now while they are hot would be a great way to end the season and gain some momentum going into the playoffs.

1980 still burns hot for most long time Falcon Fans! This year will be interesting in the playoffs, but I still think they are a year or 2 away.

Favre needs to hang it up for good. Glad to see Pennington doing so well!

I have been a falcon fan for 30 years and loyal. I will say there is still some missing links in this team. Lets face the facts, Def-line is OK. Secondary is scary sometimes. The coaches get way to conservative with a lead. They did not do this when the season started, this will come back to bite them if they are not aggressive in the playoffs. Coach, please quit slowing down with a lead. We were not even supposed to be in this situation, so why slow down? It would have cost u the game last week had it not been for the turnovers. My prediction is: falcons make it to 2nd round and fall but great year. OH PLEASE WIN THIS WEEK SO WE DONT HAVE TO PLAY THE VIKES AGAIN THANKS GO FALCONS!!

The vikes dont have a chance against the Giants, if the giants play full out. They may not to protect injuries. Then th vikes will win.

The Falcons will win the superbowl because it’s in the stars for them to do so. There’s something mystical happening. My belief in the Falcons hinges on superstition, and I like that the tea leaves are saying we win, and I believe the tea leaves this time. I believe the crystal balls, the palm readings, the oracle of delphi, the jeanne dixon, edgar cacee, nostradomus, prophets and seances which are all saying: Falcons!!

THe Falcons win because the force is with them.

I agree that the ‘91 season was underrated. Say what you want about Glanville and the run ‘n shoot but they were an exciting team that year. New Orleans was a good team and we beat them twice (including the first round). The mud at RFK slowed us down and it was just basically trying to slug it out against a team that averaged about 30 pounds heavier that went on to win the SB.

As for the moment, I also agree the coaching is getting way too conservative too early; if they’d had a veteran QB in there with 10 minutes to go we would have lost. But we didn’t, so no need to complain yet. This is a magical year. I hate to root for N.O., but…

I for one hope the Falcons don’t have to play the Vikes again. We did not beat them — they beat themselves. 7 fumbles? They moved the ball at will against us, and Turner did not run the ball well. What was with his Duckett-like tiptoeing at the line Sunday? I’m afraid if we play them again, we might just get our @ss beat.

I’m with the Blogfather. This Falcon’s season has been blessed by the football gods. We couldn’t give away the games to San Diego, Tampa, or Minnesota, even though they certainly tried. (We did give away the game to New Orleans, but it turns out that one game doesn’t really matter in the big picture.) Now we just have to hope the coaching staff gets the spirit and unleashes this team for 4 straight quarters in every game we play from now on. the football gods are quirky and they frown on weak play calling. Time to open up the bag of tricks and play like there is no tomorrow.

Falcons vs whoever in Tampa. It will be like home field for us. Superbowl here we come!

You know what? THANK GOD VICK GOT CAUGHT AND WENT TO JAIL!!!! If he never did that, the Falcons would have won 5 games at best, and I’m sure Vick would have been injured for most of what would have been another dismal season. He let us all down and we became a classless football team.

I believe Vick deserves a second chance, but may be in Oakland. I wonder how he feels watching the Falcons go on to be so successful without him.

The character of this new Falcons team, their attractive football, and this phenomenal QB have resurrected this city, buried the vick name for good, and have a bright winning future ahead. CONGRATS!

I hope we do not have to play the Vikings again. That #7 reminded me of another #7 running. The Vikes have a great line and a great back along with a very mobile QB, they will be trouble for whomever they play. It seems as though when no one expected anything from us, the play calling was agreesive but now we realize the last two games that we are playing are for the playoffs we are playing on pins and needles. We looked very timid on offense on sunday

If I were any other team, I would NOT want to play the Falcons. This team is confident and they have a swagger to ‘em.

As a day one Falcons fan this year is out of the blue. I was at the Dallas game in 1980 and have never been so down after. Then 1988 happened and Atlanta made the Super Bowl. Never thought I would live that long. Take a look at the last few years of the playoffs. Nobody gave the Giants a chance last year. And only an idiot would have put Carolina in the year they made it. The NFL is almost like wrestling it is so fixed. No way the Saints should have made the NFC championship a couple of years ago. Maybe they have it fixed for the Falcons in 2009. Hey this mystical weed is pretty good. I am starting to see stars.

By jlrfalcon

1) This is the NFL-just because Calvin Johnson was good at GT does not mean he will be the greatness of the NFL. Ryan is comfortable with both Jenkins and White and passing to them just fine-if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

2) Actually, if you have ever flown into Atlanta from anywhere (the guys in the new control tower play with planes like Nintendo), you likely have had your flight circled around a few times before it lands, perhaps even having a total u-turn over SC from the west.

3) BTW, Schultz, have you ever noticed we have another winning team in town that has a bird mascot? Maybe that team will be good through next June and we won’t even have to think about baseball since the Falcons training camp will then start in July.

Hey, since Jeff is free-associating, I will too… has anyone noticed the parallels between the Falcons and Dolphins these last few seasons? Two seasons ago, both lost coaches they were better off losing. The next year, both hired new hotshots who failed miserably. Both teams pursued Bill Parcells (he went to the Dolphins, but I’ll take Dimitroff long-term). This year, both were picked to finish last again, both hired no-name, no-nonsense assistant coaches who turned things around in dramatic fashion and are threatening to win their divisions. It’s eerie. (And I didn’t even dredge up that they both started playing in 1966. Ooooh.)

If they both make the Super Bowl, I may just have to s#!t myself.

Flying into ATL from MSP? You come in one of two ways-either from the NW over Rome, GA or from the NE over the Foothills VOR (ODF).

It is entirely possible to be over SC when coming from MSP. It depends on which arrival the plane is instructed to fly.

The Falcons also won the first ever wildcard playoff game, the first year there were two wildcard teams, which played each other (1978). The Falcons beat the Eagles with luck and a comeback. The following week there were four playoff games played (AFC and NFC), and the Atlanta-Dallas game was the only one not a blow out, with the Falcons having the lead at halftime, with the game tied after three quarters. The Cowboys squeaked out a 27-20 victory, on their way to the SuperBowl. The following week the Cowboys beat the Rams 28-0. So, the Falcons did themselves well in their first playoff appearance.

Hey Y’all:

ONE HEARTBEAT, BABY!!!! GET ON BOARD. “ONE HEARTBEAT, BABY. We are in the playoff and there is more to come. “BELIEVE” in the “HEART” of Atlanta. We are a “TEAM”. The FALCONS are our team and we are down with them in “ONE HEARTBEAT!!”. FALCONS, print up some T-Shirts!!: “ONE HEARTBEAT!!!!”

Have you ever seen a team so discipline and coordinated in their desire to play good football and win. I sat in my local sports bar screaming and hollering with friends on nearly every offensive and defensive play sceaming “ONE HEARTBEAT!!”. Let’s do this thing. And guess what?! Our Falcons did it with some nitty, gritty, nasty, smart football. Remember, we were not invited to the dance. The naysayers said we were not invited. However, we “CRASHED” the party and now we are there to leave the DAMN party with the best looking girl: THE SUPER BOWL TROPHY. That’s right! THE SUPER BOWL TROPHY. Boy, are the naysayers looking stupid. They do not know what to say on T.V. about our FALCONS. But I will say it for them: ONE HEARTBEAT!!!! ONE HEARTBEAT, BABY!!’ This team represents Atlanta’s return from the ashes: RESURGENS. WE ARE BACK!!. And as Coach Smith said “WE ARE STILL IN THE PROCESS BUT WE ARE IN THE PLAYOFF!!!”. My God , I am truly afraid and the NFL havwe better be afraid of the end result of this “PROCESS” . Because right now, this “PROCESS” has “SUPER BOWL” written all over it. WHat a time for Mr. Blank, management, and especially the players who are implementing the mission and vision of this franchise. And the fans and the football community includes, I say “ONE HEARTBEAT!!!” , “ONE HEARTBEAT, BABY!!!” We were not invited to the party but we arte going to leave with the prettiest girl there: THE SUPER BOPWL TROPHY. YOU GOT TO BELIEVE. IT IS TIME TO “SHOCK THE WORLD!!!”.

SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!! This is a SECRET from a FALCON FAN. TELL EVERYBODY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Out of all of the Falcons teams to ever make the playoffs, this is the one I’m most proud of! They were ranked #32 out of 32 the first ESPN rankings of the year, and are much too young to know they’re not supposed to be this good. Ignorance is bliss, and that ignorance may lead them very far in the playoffs. I truly believe they will win the division, and will get at least to the NFC Conference Championship game. If someone is nice enough to knock off the Giants, they would get a home game, and I feel sorry for whoever comes into the dome. GO FALCONS!

Bluster is good. Reality is better. Take what we’ve done and be proud. We have what we didn’t think was possible at the season’s beginning. If not this year, feel good about the future. Think about it. We’re discussing the Falcon’s chances in this year’s Super Bowl! I like their chances. But after last year, I like the fact that we’re so hyped up to be so heady. And by the way, all Falcons’ contributions nonwithstanding, Ryan’s played EVERY down. Pretty amazing. But the MVP this year goes for the entire team and organization, top to bottom. Bluster is good. Favre comments make light of why you are a writer and not a coach. Use some objective measure. A 13-3 team with Favre is now a mere shadow of its former self. A 4-12 team has an opportunity for a 10-6 season and a possible playoff berth. As far as BFs decision making: you have to make the best bad decision when inept coaching puts one in the position of having to win the game pretty much alone. Moreover, check around the league, the vast majority of teams would snap him up in a minute.

The Vikes will notch a win over the Giants as NY will be resting their starters with home-field locked up. However, the Falcons will win the division as the Saints will roll over the Panthers with them still smarting over choking against the Giants and Brees going for Marino’s season yardage record. It will be ugly. Then the Falcons will host the Vikes or Bears and with the bye week will win easily. After that, we will see just how much of a franchise QB Ryan is really going to be.

I prefer to take it one game at a time. Let’s put the Rams away early, which is something we have not done all year, and let Redman play the 4th quarter.

Then let’s pray for our pals from New Orleans to take care of the Panthers. Then we can relax as a #2 seed and have an extra week to prepare for our playoff game at the GA Dome.

How about we keep Roddy and Norwood and draft a stud defensive lineman to help abraham with the pass rush with the number 1 pick?
