Moment to cherish for Falcons

Minneapolis — As coaches hugged and players celebrated and the owner’s son jumped into the arms of his father, John Abraham was blindsided by a different kind of emotion, one that nobody could have seen coming amid the hopeless projections of summer.

“I teared up,” he said. “It all hit me. To have a year like this, to fight like this, after what everybody was saying about us — I actually teared up. Never happened before.”

These are the moments that an athlete cherishes, the moments that can make sports so special. These are the moments that make you say “huh?” and “wow” simultaneously.

The Falcons are in the playoffs. Huh? Wow.

Dallas collapses at home on Saturday. Tampa Bay collapses at home on Sunday. All around the Falcons, the dominoes fell.

The only team that didn’t act like it wasn’t supposed to be here was the team that wasn’t supposed to be here.

“It’s the week of miracles,” owner Arthur Blank said. “The first night of Hanukkah is tonight. Christmas is this week. And now this.”

It wasn’t the perfect performance. It didn’t need to be. The Minnesota Vikings had seven fumbles and lost four. It was like watching a team chain-smoke sticks of dynamite. But what does it say that the Falcons have spent a good part of this season watching their opponents self-destruct?

“Resiliency,” coach Mike Smith said when asked what surprised him most about this team. “We haven’t lost consecutive games all season. That says a lot about these men and their ability to bounce back.”

They are 10-5. At this point a year ago, they had dropped six in a row on the way to a 4-12 face plant. It was the third straight year out of the playoffs, far from the high of 2004, when the four corners of this franchise — owner, general manager, coach, quarterback — looked so stable and promising. Spectacular disaster followed. A franchise so accustomed to the bottom seemed to have found a new low.

Now, the Falcons are something else. Tough. Confident. Remarkably grown up. They walked into one of the NFL’s loudest buildings and played a Vikings team that had won eight of its last 10. They drove 74 yards for a touchdown on the opening possession.

While the Vikings’ showed their thumbs, the Falcons showed their resolve and their maturity. They built a 24-7 lead and only teased their opponent in the end.

Long after it was over, general manager Thomas Dimitroff stood against a wall in the bowels of the Metrodome, still in a daze. He could hear the college-like shouts of his players from the other side of the locker room door.

“I’m so proud of this group, the way everybody bought into this rebuilding idea, the way they bought into coach Smith, the way they formed a team,” he said. “Any time there’s been a mishap this season, there’s been somebody there to pick a teammate up. It’s been an amazing thing to watch.”

The shouts of Lawyer Milloy, the team’s acknowledged leader, could be heard through the walls.

“We’re not done!” he told teammates.

Later, Milloy smiled even as he went though the pain of putting on his socks (“I need a new back.”).

“I told these guys, you only get these chances every so often in a lifetime,” he said. “In training camp, you had people predicting us to win one game. Me being as old as I am, I told everybody, ‘Don’t let this be just a rebuilding year. I can’t go through that.’ “

He hasn’t had to. Milloy watched from the sideline as Abraham delivered the knockout punch — a sack of Tarvaris Jackson in the final minute, causing an eruption on the sideline.

“I know he was upset this week about not going to the Pro Bowl,” Milloy said of Abraham. “But I told him, ‘When you’re holding up that trophy at the end of the year, you won’t be thinking about the Pro Bowl.’ Hey, why not us? We feel like we can match up with anybody in the NFC. We’ve got a shot.”

There was a time you would’ve laughed at that statement. Not now. Because by now, it has hit everybody.

Would be interesting to see how they do against an AFC powerhouse, but there can be no doubt: they’re capable of beating any of the NFC powerhouses.

Congrats to the entire team, the entire office staff. This is probably more amazing than the 91 worst to first for the Braves.

Absolutely the best TEAM in the NFC. There is simply no quit in this team. I’ve always thought they had the talent, now I believe they have the heart. How many Defensive linemen went down today? And we still held the best RB in the league to under 80 yds rushing. Got to love this Falcons organization from owner all the way down to waterboy. SuperBowl here we come!

My brothers and I are huge Falcons fans from Salt Lake City, UT. I just want to say CONGRATS to the Falcons! This year has been amazing! We bought the Sunday Ticket and have watched every game. Matt Ryan has been unbelievably poised, accurate, and clutch. Michael Turner is such a quality, high character running back who never show boats and gives his all. Norwood is breathtakingly explosive. Roddy and Mike are a fantastic tandom. The Offensive Line was unexpectedly great. John Abraham is the sickets pass rusher in the game. Milloy is a solid leader. The D is underrated and oppotunistic. And our staff and front office have earned our complete trust. What a SEASON! We love our Falcons! Great guys-Great team!! CONGRATS AGAIN! Let’s win it all!

Hey Vick, you might be the first to beat Green Bay in the playoffs, but I am the first QB to take Atlanta to the Super Bowl. If you are all that, then what am I? After all, I took Atlanta further than you did. The fact is boy, you were always around 18, 19, or 20th during your hideous run at QB.

So what, they made the play-offs. Sometimes even the sun shines on a dog’s a#$. They are in they deserve it. But, I have never seen so many gift victories. The Bears and the Vikes gave them wins. If the Falcons play either of those 2 teams in the first round they are one and done then on to a 5-11 2009 season.

Think about something for a second:

Look at all of the teams who will potentially be in the playoffs in the NFC and whether or not Atlanta could beat them:

Giants- The only team who could give Atlanta fits with their bruising running game. Their pass offense is not as much of a threat with Burress no longer there. The Panthers have proven that a running team can attack that New York D. Turner and Norwood would be able to rush on their D-line.

Carolina- Atlanta was the last team that has beaten them (depending on tonight’s game) and Ryan can throw on their secondary.

Minnesota- Yes, Minnesota may be a different team if we face them again. However, Atlanta has shown they can beat a team they’ve faced before, even without the numerous fumbles.

Arizona- Atlanta’s likely first-round opponent, the Cardinals have proven that they can only win by throwing the ball, and in the playoffs you need to have a running game. Atlanta can attack with Turner and Ryan will pick their secondary apart.

Dallas- Too combustible and lack the leadership to win in January.

Also, this team has the look of a franchise that realizes there are bigger goals that still need to be reached. That kind of poise will be huge in the years to come.

At this point I see Atlanta really making a run in the playoffs. GO RYAN! GO SMITH! GO BURNER! GO FALCONS!

Living here in S Florida as a Falcon fan I hear a lot of people talk about how the dolphins are the best turnaround story in the league, that a bunch of crap! The Falcons are a way better story, playing a harder schedule, in a tougher division, and facing many more obstacles than the dolphins could ever imagine. Coach Smith will win coach of the year and Mr. Parcells, who spurned the Falcons at the beginning of the year can KICK ROCKS! He is so over rated.

BigEasy I take it you’re a Saints fan right?

Good luck in the playof……oh yeah that’s right, the AINTS didn’t make the playoffs right? For the second year in a row?

Guess it goes to prove that your gimmicky passing system doesn’t translate to wins against real teams. When Sean Payton gets fired next year after NO goes 6-10 what will you scrubs do then?

Thanks hater, Atlanta will rule the NFC south for years to come with a real running back, a real leader at QB (and not some system QB like Drew Brees, who’s only concerned about his stats instead of wins) and a real coach.

Enjoy life in the NFC South Basement, looking up at Atlanta!

I am so proud of this team. Our early 80’s teams were marked by a lot of heart, but this years team is absolutely amazing. I really think that this team could go all the way. The Panthers and the Falcons are probably the two best teams in the NFC. It is good to see a GM and a coaching staff that is more concerned about chemistry and coachability that stats and reps. I am glad that they cleaned house this season. The cancer in the lockerroom had to go. This is the result. Football is the ultimate team game. Go Birds.

Jeff George: $5 MILLION arm … $5 HEAD. Not only did he not ever lead the Falcons to a Super Bowl but I doubt that he ever led a Pop Warner team to a title! The mythical cinderella story must really stop. This is pathetic. The media is pumping up the Falcons as this great story for 2008 when the Dolphins only won 1 game last year and they also won 10 games so far. The Falcon won 4 with a coach who didn’t wanna be here. So why are they acting like this is a miracle that they could win some games? They want to have this feel good story so they can continue to have a reason to keep pointing to Vick. What happens when that excuse can no longer be used to say “look, see what we overcame?” What happens when its figured out that plenty of first year coaches have immediate success before the rest of the league gets more film on them? They NEED to build up this fake story of “whoa was we, look at how we had to come back from nothing”…..the Falcons didn’t have to come back and build from scratch. They still had Abraham who has played in EVERY game this season, they still have the leadership of Milloy, they have Boley, Grady Jackson and Babineaux. They have Roddy who had 1000 yards last season with 4 different QBs. THey have a Running back who had fresh legs and wasn’t a rookie so he has experience against NFL defenses. Its not like they have a team starting half rookies. They just want this sob story because it gives them sympathy. I cant wait until this season is finally over so this charade can end because next season this continous blubbering will be over and the AJC and local radio will be exposed for what they’ve really been doing…building up a house of cards.

Wow. Nothing in my life lines up like the 08 Falcs.. If it were Star Trek DS9 they’d talk about neutrinos spinning in one direction (as a definition of luck.)

However, this team makes some of their own luck. The rest, today, with fumbles, etc. was a total gimme. We capitalized, but could have put the game totally out of reach by mid-3rd quarter. Players need to know what my family always quotes me as saying: “NO Falcons wins/ games are over until 5 minutes after the gun.” My spouse offered an ‘80 (presidential) recount… “thanks, but no thanks.”

To wit, Chicago game, I’d walked out. I didn’t believe. I screamed “DORSEY” in the draft and stomped out. While I never stopped being a fan, I’d presumed more knowledge than I have.

To the coach who sweated more than his players — yo Smitty, you rock. To Blaylock, and unsung sophomore lineman, “Ninja On.” To the offense route runners, thanks for giving it your energy. To Mr. Blank, thanks for havingin the intellectual energy and being willing to re-think the entire organization.

To the Def Secondary, we underestimated you, but we will need more. To Clabo, keeping hitting and being physical, that was not a usual foul. To HDTV, Finn, Burner & “AfterBurner” (Navy compliment to amazing Norwood’s speed) Rowdy, The Drill, and Jenkins who stepped up when 84 was covered, thank you. Kudos to the TEs!! To the over 30s who hung in for one more year, keep LEADING.

And to the next MVP Rookie or MVP, don’t forget the “Aw Shucks.” It makes us feel better, like we could be you. You are good; could be great. And I’m thrilled to be enduring spousal verbiage that I don’t know a megaQB from a lineman.

By Sob Story Falcons, AMEN BROTHER, great post. I agree with you 100%. I am not a Saints fan but do love NOLA, great city. I have always love the Steelers. Falcons are a good not great team but they are even more lucky than good, but a win is a win. The Falcons deserve to be in the play-offs, but like By Sob Story Falcons stated, they are not the great story of the NFL. It is Miami and Baltimore. Joe Flacco has been just as important to the turn around of his team and the success of their first year coach. Just remember the Falcons have never had back to back winning seasons and next year schedule will be much tougher. Some of you act as if it is the first time the franchise has ever made it to the play-offs, well it is not. The last 2 games they have not been winning because of Matty Ice, they have been winning in spite of him. He is not MVP of his own team Michael Turner is, so those of you who keep writing MATTY ICE for ROY and MVP you are insane. By Sob Story Falcons the league have figured out how to stop Matty Ice, they have seen enough and Monty Kiffin exposed it last week. Enjoy the dream season Falcon fans next year will be a nightmare. Falcons 5-11 in 2009.

Sometimes, when a team is intent on self-destruction, its opponent has to forego trying snap it to its senses by displaying any level of capability. Today the Falcons just had to let the Vikings shoot itself in the foot, over and over and over and over and ….

It will be interesting to see if the Falcons play the Rams like it is a preseason game, sending in the second team after halftime. Maybe, if the Panthers have built a big lead in the Superdome, then it will be easier to sit down Abraham, Milloy, Ryan, and Turner?

It’s hard to believe that after all of this, Michael Vick’s name is still being brought up.

Come on,guys, Vick’s gone. He is a painful reminder of our shameful past.

Let Vick rest. Like Blank said, that page has been turned, chapter has been turned, and the book has been closed.

Let’s support our team without the negativity.

Big Easy

The reason that the Falcons are a bigger story than the Dolphins is the fact that the Falcons had all of this crap with Petrino and Vick.

We also had cancers in the locker room. Granted, the Dolphins have had a wonderful turn around year, the Dolphins didn’t have a fraction of the problems that the Falcons had.

I understand where you and SOB Story come from and I respect your views, but the Falcons had to overcome a lot more adversity than the Dolphins did.

It would be cool to see the Falcons and Dolphins in the Super Bowl, though.

Hey freemikevick, When exactly did Atlanta “turn their back” on Vick? It seems like the owner and majority of fans (myself included) supported him as he lied to Mr. Blank and Goodell. I hope he had learned his lesson. I hope be understands that killing and torturing dogs, and then lying about it, are wrong. I even hoe he gets a shot to continue playing because I still think he is talented. I just hope it is elsewhere, because the Falcons have moved on.
So please no more “Atlanta turned their backs” comments. No one forced him to break the law and then repeatedly lie about it.

I would like to say….

THANK YOU to Michael Vick for fighting dogs and getting caught! Without him doing that, we would still be waiting (and making excuses) for him to develop into a real quarterback. If he had not done that, we would still be waiting 2 - 3 more years for him to learn how to pass the ball. Matt Ryan has shown that it does not take 5 - 6 years to learn how to pass.

Also…

THANK YOU to Bobby Petrino for being a piece of chicken sh@t. If he had not slithered off, Mr. Blank would probably not have been motivated to make the major overhaul that was necessary, beginning with hiring Thomas Dimitrioff, who in turn hired a real NFL coach.

We should all be very happy and thankful for what these two individuals did this for us! At the time, a lot of people were upset at what they did to the team. But in reality, their actions were probably the very best thing that they could have ever done to help the team.

Once again, THANK YOU Michael Vick and Bobby Petrino!!!

Man, this is incredible!! Words can describe the feelings, even the mere mention of the Falcons in the playoffs brings a smile to my face. I’ve been a fan for almost 20 years, I went to the Superbowl in Miami, and was surrounded by Broncos fans. I went to the cold playoff game in at Vet stadium in Philly in ‘02, and I’ve been along for the ride even through the bad times. I heard all the so called “experts” pick the Vikings today, and I’m telling you - no-one saw this coming. This is an incredible feeling, even if the Falcons lose in the 1st round. It just shows you they are on the right track, and even Smitty said he wasn’t thinking playoffs during training camp. THIS IS HUGE!! Happy Holidays to all the Falcons fans who hung in there…lets keep it rolling!!!

The way this team is being coached, it would be difficult for the Falcons to “flop” next year.

Smitty ain’t gonna let that happen. But, what can I say…wait til next year.

It’ll probably take a few winning consecutive seasons for the critics to be silenced. But it’ll be fun in the process.

They shouldn’t sit people next week. There’s still the seeding and potentially an NFC South Championship and first round bye to play for.

Besides, its good to play through the season and build momentum.

Oh, and its the Vick supporters who refuse to support the Falcons and bring up Vick in the first place, so they open themselves up to fire. Please, leave it alone. The Falcons are in the playoffs! Forget Vick. It’s a new day.

And the Falcons are lucky… all the way to the playoffs. Saints fans can watch us in the playoffs while they sit at home and whine about how lucky the Falcons are. That said, beat up on the Panthers next week. Will be rooting for you.

Go get on his blog, this is a Falcons team blog, ya know? I can’t believe the turnaround and hard work of this team! Congrats on a great season. To Sob Story Falcons,

I think you meant “‘woe’ was we”, not “‘whoa’ was we”. In any event, you’re grammatically incorrect. Your take on the Falcons’ circumstances is simplistic at best, and incorrect (again) at worst. This is a team that lost their franchise quarterback right before the 2007 season started. They had to endure the aloof nature of a college football coach who alienated the entire team, then abandoned them after bringing them to the edge of disaster. They had a core of players (led by D’Angelo Hall) who formed a malignant tumor, furthering the turmoil surrounding the Falcons. I’m not saying that some of this mess was not self-inflicted, but they were still obstacles that had to be overcome.

The Dolphins, on the other hand, were not challenged by the off-field problems that hampered Atlanta. Miami had QG problems, ran into lots of bad luck, and was bitten by the injury bug, but these were minor impositions compared to the disarray that plagued the Falcons.

As a Florida resident and an Atlanta native, I applaud the amazing turnaround for both teams. I see bright futures ahead for at least the next few years. Why try to dampen the goodwill that both of these teams have given their fans?

one simple reply to the idiots that keep on harpin about M. Vick….Time is everyone’s mother…We’ll see, in due time, how Mike does. I wish him the best. Until his time re-arrives…your speech carries a stench. If you truly believe in his talent and character, then you’d passionately await his return. To continuously espouse vitriol as regards his current absence from the game only demonstrates your bias and short vision.

on to better topics…))) I had to laugh, even before recovery was known….at the diving attempt Ryan made for the goal line. Initially, i thought…” My God !…this boy wants to be a runnin back.” Maybe he has dreams of Walter Payton. Is it possible that secretly inside, there resides a latent desire amongst QB’s…to leap into abandon, seeking the goal line, as a RB must do ? then…i thought….oh hell… there is a plethora of bad possibilities here(whilst awaiting to see who recovered the football).

Well, we was Lucky….lol….but then i remembered….Troy Aikman guttin it out, w /bad knees, i thought about John Elway givin it all he had one time in a Super Bowl , and…i laughed some more. Here…we got a rookie QB, who’s followin the script, all season long…but for just one moment, today, he broke the script, and showed me how bad he wants to win. I love that, even tho i hope he dont have to do it no more, but if it comes down to it, i know….he’ll give it ALL. That HAS to be…a sign, to the team. They now know, Ryan will give it up, in any manner necessary to win. He’s a smart, surefire, hell-or-highwater Fighter, an he’s still….a boy…))) Those 6 points Blaylock landed on, won the Game.

Changin topics…Falcons are predictable upon ball possesion w/a lead in the fourth quarter. Regardless of field position, they always run MTurner on first down,…hoping to make significant progress an keep the clock running.Problem is, they usually end up w/second and long, try another run, then end op puttin the whole burden on the passin game on 3rd down.WHAT….EVER happened, to the side-line flair-out pass? Montana used to throw that 6-7 yarder on first down , a simple sideline flair-out, and then…defenses had to truly wonder about the next 2 downs. Why not make em fear the run of 4 yards on second down ? We need to practice, this very basic, but effective pirahna attack, and deploy it, late in the Game.Gash em on first down. Then run over em.

This Alanta team has so much character, thus far, they playin sound Team football. But they lack any swagger, yet. ….So be it for now, who could have forseen this excellent turnaround, anyhow ? i hope and have a few reasons to believe, this is the beginning of better days, success fo the organization.

Late in the game,i saw a Falcons defensive lineman with the name Jefferson on his jersey. Anyone know who that was ?

Anxiously awaiting Brent Grimes to get back on the field, he plays full-throttle.

U gotta love how coaches have built solid depth on both lines, and foster ascendance thru substitutions.

Hey BigEasy830, It is true that both Miami and Baltimore are good stories but personally, I still feel that the Falcons story is bigger and more surprising and heres why. Baltimore always had a great defense to center around but their offense didn’t match up. Joe Flac comes along does a great job, another rookie doing his thing. As for Miami, they always had talent and people believed that they would turn it around just not this quickly. They are a great turnaround story as well. Now lets look at the Falcons….they had their beloved QB imprisoned and had PETA protesters in their training camp. All the news about the falcons was bad never good. Then they hire a college coach who ultimately leaves before the season ends only to leave more insult to injury to a horrid season. The projection for this season was wining ONE game and they were ranked by pro analysts as last place. Both miami and balt didn’t have to go through all that crap…neither did their fans…soo that is why fans are overly excited and proud..theres no comparison to which is the biggest comeback or turnaround…its the falcons just cause the fact that there was such little expectations from everyone else….Miami and Balt had more expectation than Falcons had coming into this season. Your right the Falcons are not a great team but they are a good team with the potential to be great. As for your projection for next season, I think that coach Smith and GM are too smart to let the team go from 10-5 (so far) to 5-11. Although it will be tough to match this season but I believe that they will win more than 5 games. Good post thou…u like the browns?

I’m very proud of this team and it’s not a fluke. Another good draft/FA offseason to get a TE and plug some holes in the defense (including Anderson’s replacement) and we’ll be just as big in it next year and the foreseeable future. This season is just gravy; with our GM and coaching staff and this player nucleus we’re gonna be a cornerstone of the NFC for years to come. How many pundits have you heard lately saying something like “Boy, who wouldn’t want to have the falcons franchise the next 10 years?” The system is in place, and we won’t need as much luck in the future. Luck is just the byproduct of doing the right things.

i was very upset and bitter against arthur blank last year with his handling of vick and the hiring of petrino, but he did a masterful job bringing in the right people who rebuit the falcons.

this closes the chapter on a terible era and starts a new one of an organization who has found their niche and their way.

this is truly a new era for the falcons and an organiztion that has found it’s step and one that is very classy!

By Holy Cow, the Falcons better not sit anyone, they will be playing for the NFC South next week and a first round bye. The home team have won every game this year in the NFC South that means Carolina play at New Orleans, you have to like the Saints chances in that game, plus Carolina having a hang-over from the tough lost on Sunday night. That means the streak of worst to first in the NFC South may be still alive if the Falcons win the South.

Thanks to Michael Vick, who couldn’t leave the hood behind, we, yes THE FALCONS, have THE Quarterback.

Thanks to Petrino, who never was an NFL coach-and a coward to boot, we, yes THE FALCONS, have THE coach.

Thanks to The San Diego Chargers, who didn’t know Mr. Turner was the better running back (LD Who?), we, yes THE FALCONS, have THE running back.

BIG THANKS to this team of men, who act like men and NEVER give up. Nobody in the NFL wants to play a team like THE FALCONS, who are winning on bad days. That is a mark of champions. Wow, I just said “champions” and Falcons in the same paragraph, and it felt freakin GREAT!

I think it is way past time to start ignoring the posts from fans who obviously can’t move on from Vick who is no longer with our team. This should be a day to rejoice in our team getting to the playoffs yet some don’t even want to talk about that. Reality is you just encourage the Vickheads by talking to them rather than ignoring them. Real falcon supporters talk about players with our team and let those who are with that other player move on to whatever team picks up their only hero in football. Matt Ryan, Michael Turner, John Abraham, Robby White, Jerious Norwood, and etc none of what you do even getting to the playoffs is important to some there is only one player on their team that matters. All they care about is some guy in jail no longer on our team. I care about our team well done Falcons nobody believed it could be done and you exceeded all our expectations..

I grew up in Atlanta, went to the very first Falcons game (42-0 loss to the Browns)and have been a Falcons fan since they were born. I moved to Baltimore after graduating from Tech in the early 70’s and quickly became a Colt fan. They moved to Indy in ‘83 and we got the Ravens in ‘96. I’ve been an ardent Ravens fan since then. Since that time, the Falcons and Ravens have had there ups and downs. Both have been in Super Bowls, etc. The similarities this year are mind boggling. Both coming off bad years last year, both with first year head coaches, rookie first round QB’s, both 10-5, when all the experts picked each team to win 4 or 5 games and finish last in their divisions and, now, if Baltimore beats J’ville at home on Sunday, both teams get wild card playoff berths. (By the way, Jeff, The Cowboys didn’t fold saturday night — they got their asses beat by the Ravens, which, in case you didn’t notice, enabled the Falcons to clinch yesterday — you’re welcome.)Since this year has been so improbable for both teams, here’s my prediction: Falcons and Ravens both go on the road for the playoffs and shock all the non-believers by facing off in Tampa five weeks from now. Would that be wild, or what? As much as I still pull for the Falcons, I have to say I’m pulling for the Ravens in that one but I will still fly my 8’x 5’ Falcons flag (stolen from Memorial Stadium in 1977) alongside my Ravens flag on Super-Sunday. Go Falcons! Go Ravens! and PS, GO Yellow Jackets, beat those Tigers!!!

I can’t believe that after what this franchise has accomplished after last year, we still have to read all this nonsense about Michael Vick.

I was thrilled when Vick was drafted, and cheered for him when he was an Atlanta Falcon.

I felt betrayed by his off the field actions. But he’s not coming back here. He’s no more relevant to this team today than Bobby Petrino, who betrayed this team more than Michael Vick did. Vick made a stupid mistake, and he’s paying for it dearly. I hope he finds his way back to the NFL, and turns his life around. He’s a very gifted athlete. Petrino is a quitter and a sorry excuse of a man. Why anyone would want him molding college players is beyond me.

As to the Falcons vs. the Dolphins for best turn around - the Dolphins played a much weaker schedule because they are in a weaker division. Plenty in the national media want to shine the light on them because Bill Parcells is there, and for some reason the national media thinks he’s the greatest thing since sliced bread.

Many teams have gone from awful to good, and even great. It wasn’t that many years ago that the Patriots were one of the league’s doormats. Same for Indianapolis.

But no team in the history of the NFL has played a season with their number one qb getting thrown in jail before the first game, then had a head coach quit on them. And these Falcons have overcome that season, the biggest debacle ever suffered by an NFL franchise.

I had no reason to believe a year like this was even remotely possible. I support my team. I supported them with Vick, and I support them without him. But regardless of the Vick/Petrino year, this organization has done one heck of a job, and this city owes them their loyalty and pride. Simply amazing season - no matter when/how it ends.

I get so sick of all these idiotic Michael Vick supporters saying the Falcons would be even better than they are now with him at the helm…

Ahem, if Michael Vick hadn’t abused and killed dogs, he’d likely still be here, and we likely wouldn’t have Mike Smith, Thomas Dimitroff, Matt Ryan OR Michael Turner. We’d probably have gone 7-9 or 6-10 and in the tank.

Go Falcons! What a sweet run to the playoffs. I had picked the Falcons to get 4 wins this season based on there schedule…How enjoyable it is to have one’s expectations surpassed. Turner, Abraham, Ryan, you guys have carried this team on your backs into the playoffs…well done guys! There are a lot of factors that contribute to a winning season ; Injuries , strength of schedule, team chemistry, coaching [preparedness], luck.
How many years have we seen the Falcons have one or more of the above missing from the Falcons season? The consistency of the offense [led by Ryan and Turner], plus the playmaking ability of Abraham puts pressure on the opponents game in and game out. Over the course of a season this adds up to more wins than losses. Kudos to Blank, Dmitroff, Smith. Thanks for elevating this Falcons organization to one we can be proud of!

Fumble, Fumble, Foiled by Fumbles, Timeouts burned, and Vikings humbled.

Are there deep mystical forces working for the Falcons? Surely it would take a spell to make the football take flight from the scrimmage line and scramble backwards purposefully toward the Falcon’s end zone twice in a few minutes.

Or do the Falcons have an angel? A mischievous angel with a sense of humor that harkens back to the keystone cop silent movie era. An angel who turned the vikings into bumbling fumblers. The image of the vikings chasing the pigskin dozens of yards behind thier line of scrimmage is one of the lighter moments of the past 300 years.

This is no ordinary season. The Falcons have won improbably again.

I’m just in shock ,and overjoyed at the same time with these Falcons. I have been watching them since they came to Atlanta. Only seeing them look good a couple of years. I hope that for once, they can build on this team and be competitive every year from now on. I’m tired of seeing them look really good, then the next year crash and burn again. I’m hoping for this franchise to become what the Atlanta Braves became. A dominate team for years. Good luck in the playoffs!!

Bigeasy, so many things are incorrect in your post. First the crap about the schedule being harder. Every team in the division plays the SAME schedule except for two games that are decided by where you finish and in a league with turnarounds every year who knows who will be good and who won’t. They’ve figured Matt Ryan out? That is laughable. I haven’t seen it. I agree Miami is a great story and so is Flacco but let’s not forget the Ravens have a pretty good defense

BigEasy830 @ 10:40 PM (12/21) - That may be true about the Vikes & Bears stumbling, but a good team (i.e. - the Falcons) capitalizes on mistakes to capture victories!

The Birds need to finish strong next Sunday and set the tone for the playoffs. The defense will need to step it up a great deal come playoff time (as they were off a tad yesterday). I think the Falcons have a great shot at the NFC Championship!

P.S. - I still can’t believe “MattyIce” got snubbed on the Pro Bowl. He made a subpar WR (White) into a Pro-Bowler this year!

Congrats to the Falcons. What a game. I was screaming at the TV. I scared my wife and kids and felt a sense of aww after the seconds finished. Remember to bash New Orleans. If they beat Carolina, which I feel confident that they will. The Falcons will be the #2 seed with a bye. Wow, did I just say that? If not , than they are a guaranteed #5. If we our football, wasn’t the NY Giants the #5 seed and won the Super Bowl? By the way, Vick is done, Petrino is done, Mora is going to be the head coach for the Seahawks ( sorry seattle ). Let,s stop talking about those losers. They let Atlanta down, our fans, our city. Dan Reeves in my opinion was the best coach in the Falcons orginization. Mike Smith and Thomas Dimitroff built this team with very few leftovers from last year. So this was nobody else’s team but Mike and Thomas’ to sculpt and build with this rebuilding process. If this is the rebuilding process, God Help the NFL when we are 100%. Thank you all and have a happy holiday’s.

Crabapple Joe is right. Sob story, Big Easy 830, Vick supporters 1 and 2, don’t want to give the Falcons/Ryan any credit because their predictions that the Birds would be nothing w/o Vick were so blatantly wrong. Matt Ryan will NEVER be accepted here by SOME members of a certain community because it is KILLING them to see Ryan play so well as Vick’s successor. Even Deion Sanders tried to downplay Ryan’s impact last night on NFL NETWORK’S GAMEDAY FINAL show. It’s really sad because if D J Shockley was starting and playing well , Deion and the aforementioned posters would be singing his praises. Guys let’s have one standard and realize that Vick’s horrible decisions are why he’s no longer here and another has taken his place. Congratulations, Falcons! But we’re not done yet. Just one more win and we could have the #2 seed and a first-round bye, in a year when pretty much every “expert” said there was virtually NO chance of such a thing, let alone the Super Bowl.

But that’s this team’s goal, make no mistake; a SUPER BOWL TITLE!!!

Oh, and one more thing. I’m not from Atlanta but I’m confused about something; what’s with all the spleen being vented at each other in these comments, especially regarding Vick vs. Ryan? We’re all Falcons fans here, aren’t we?

The Falcons have overcome all the odds this year so far because they are a TEAM, PERIOD, NOT a one-person show. They’ve handled themselves professionally and quickly put adversity behind them, focusing solely on the next game. Vick, Ryan, it doesn’t matter; REAL fans in ANY team sport identify themselves with the name on the FRONT of the jersey, NOT the one on the back. As for the issue of race, folks, STOP THIS NONSENSE ALREADY and pull together for our Falcons!!!!

Lastly, for you naysayers who predict a 5-9 season next year. Sorry to disappoint you, but as young and already mature and disciplined as the Falcons are this year, it’s only going to get BETTER. Blank and the staff will bring in a new tight end and fill any other glaring needs during the off-season, and Atlanta will soon be talking about something not heard of since the 91-06 Braves: DYNASTY.

‘Nuff said.

“I will return to the Falcons and show all of you who is the best. Remember I am the first QB to beat Green Bays at home in the playoffs.”

Reality Check: Michael Vick will never play for the Falcons again. Arthur Blank said as much a few weeks ago. Remember? He said he hopes Vick will return to the NFL someday, although not with the Falcons. That was the oner’s very nice way of saying he does not want that convict back on his team. Besides, the Falcons have enjoyed a level of success that they never achieved with Vick. Why would they bring that cancer back to ruin this already playoff-bound team? If the commissioner reinstates that thug once he is released, he will be lucky if any NFL team signs him.

“Vick will have his day again………….”

Reality Check: Who cares? When he had his “day” with the Falcons, he failed our team miserably. He never fulfilled his potential as a franchise QB and constantly got into trouble off the field. He is a huge disappointment, convict and poor role model. We true Falcon fans have moved on. Matt Ryan is our QB and will be for quite some time, barring some unforseen circumstance. We don’t give a rat’s rear end about Vick.

“This team would have won the division had they not turned their backs on Vick. Who do you think gave Roddy all the experience?”

Reality Check: Huh? How would the Falcons have been able to win a division title with a QB who was in federal prison? Besides, the Falcons just might win a division title anyway. I see you’re still blaming the Falcons, whitey or anybody else except Vick for the outrageous choices that he made. My advice? Find a new hero and get over that thug. He doesn’t deserve all this concern and attention.

Direct quote from a previous Jeff Schultz AJC column (the Seattle P.I. reprinted this as well):

“Don’t know how the Falcons’ next season will play out. But I have pretty good feeling about Seattle’s. Just wondering how it’s going to go over in Flowery Branch when Patrick Kerney and Jim Mora are in the Super Bowl.”

Here’s Schultz in a later AJC column in which he all but puckered up to Kerney: “When Patrick Kerney voided the final two years of his contract to become a free agent, the Falcons lost far more than just a defensive end. They lost one of the few ticking heartbeats in the locker room.”

Milloy, Brooking, Babineux, Abraham, Boley and many others from the ‘06 Falcons defense (Grady Jackson, Chauncey Davis) most definitely have heart, and thank goodness they never gave up on the Falcons like Jeff Schultz & Patrick Kerney did.

Methinks Mr. Kerney needs to invite Jeff over to his huge mansion to watch the Atlanta Falcons in the NFL playoffs.

One quick response to the Vick stuff, I was one of the first to say, the only thing that would make the city forget MV7 is wins, well the Falcons have won 10 games and will be going for their 11th on Sunday and possibly the NFC south championship. Many of you were probably bigger Vick fans than I. My beef with that situation is not really about MV7 but the way the situation was handled as a whole. But, it is what it is.

BACK TO FOOTBALL

Many keep claiming that the Ravens already had a great defense when I post Flacco’s influence on the Ravens turn around. Well if you check the Ravens 2007 schedule results, you will see they gave up a ton of points, you gotta have a little help from the offense to keep the defense fresh and field position. I think Chris Johnson the RB and Rookie Pro Bowler for the Titans that destroyed My Steerlers yesterday is ROY and Eli without a doubt is MVP.

The Football Gods smiled on the Falcons this year they got many breaks, but credit to them they capitalized on them. Next year they will be playing more established teams with better coaching. I always assumed that NFL coaches knew what they were doing. This year definitely proved that almost all the players in the NFL can play, coaching is the difference. I was one of the First in pre-season that posted I loved Mike Smith and his staff right after I read he cut Jimmy Williams who came to camp at around 235 when he should have been at no more than 215 and when I read he put those linemen in the weight room. That showed he is a real football man and not one of those supposed offensive or defensive young genius that every team was trying to hire. But a real football man. He also stated in an interview one of my favorites and that is football is a gladiator sport, which it is. So with a coach like that, the Falcons have to love their chances in every game and next season as well. But I still say

FALCONS, NEXT CLEVELAND BROWNS OF 2009

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

The best part of the Falcon success is that they finally seem to have a knowledgeable organization in place committed to building the solid way. This year is great, but the early success is more a bonus and preview of things to come brought ahead of schedule with a large boost coming from Ryan himself being ahead of schedule.

And I agree with the psting that said that Tampa is the last place Vick would end up. I still think Vick could be an effective QB, but not for Gruden. Vick’s talent mix is an unusual combination of assets and liabilities and has to have the right system to thrive. Reeves did a lot better job in putting Vick in the right system than Mora. Vick’s talent is moving the pocket and creating results. The sjort in stature Vick’s weakness is standing in the pocket and being able to see the field and make throws. That just wouldn’t do for what Gruden wants. I really think the CFL is the league made for him. With the wider field and wide open game, Vick would be the terror of Canadian football.

But regardless of Vick’s football future, I do not think any objective Falcon fan can be anything but excited about the future of this team with Matt Ryan.

To quote Mora Jr. - we are playing with the house money right now. 2-3 years ahead of the ‘experts’ projected schedule. However, I like how veteran leadership has pointed out that we can not afford to be content with a playoff berth. The time to strike is now. There is no team in the NFC we can’t compete with, and beat. Look at our losses this year… the early road division games were ultimately decided by a couple of plays, and late scores that made the game appear less competitive than they really were. Philly - The phantom muffed punt. Don’t tell me that after the Bears victory the week before that we couldn’t have made some noise with 2 minutes from our own 38 yd line. Denver and NO were similar losses in that those are just 2 teams you don’t want to be stuck in a shootout with in the 4th qtr. But none have been legit blowouts. We had life in every game. Arizona at New England? Thats a blowout. They should have enforced the high school running clock mercy rule. If the cards fall our way next week we could be in position for a home game against the 3/4 seed winner, in which scenario would be Carolina vs Chicago or Minnesota. I like our chances against any team in the league at what would be a very hungry GA Dome. Particularly since we’ve beaten each of the 3 most likely candidates. Bottom line is that the team has hope. A hope we didn’t have with our prior regime. This team has toughness…and maybe even a little nastiness. I like that. Football is supposed to hurt. This team also has LEADERSHIP from the veterans, instead of cancers mouthing off to the media. There is nothing that anyone can legitimately dislike about this team. Give Jamaal Anderson a break. He plays hard and is always improving. Would you rather him be out shooting himself at nightclubs? Is there room for improvement? Always. But just be glad we aren’t make headlines with the soap opera stories of Dallas, Philadelphia, and both of the New Yorks, etc. We are in the headlines for winning. Heck, be glad to be a Falcons fan. Its a great day to be one.

I know the caucasians will never admit that though, its like no winning ever happened w/Vick at QB and it shows the kind of fans are in this city and I just can’t be involved with hypocrit fans and a hypocrite team. Actually the Vikings have a Vick and if their coach knew how to play him, the Vikings could easily have won that game even with all the fumbles. Instead, that coach, thank football diety, was a fool who kept pitching-back the ball deep into the vikings own backfield for ill-timed and poorly conceived end sweeps, which are the easiest plays to defend.

Lose that play, coach. Idiot. Thank heavens you’re an idiot, but you’re an idiot. Duh, we have the falcons on their heels, I think I’ll call a play that any defensive alignment can thwart, duhhh.

RETARD!!!

THe falcons goin’ to da superbowl.

Fumble, Fumble, Foiled by Fumbles, Timeouts burned, and Vikings humbled.

Are there deep mystical forces working for the Falcons? Surely it would take a spell to make the football take flight from the scrimmage line and scramble backwards purposefully toward the Falcon’s end zone twice in just a few minutes.

Or do the Falcons have an angel? A mischievous angel with a sense of humor that harkens back to the keystone cop silent movie era. An angel who turned the vikings into bumbling fumblers. The multiple images of the vikings chasing the pigskin dozens of yards behind their line of scrimmage provides some of the lighter moments of the past 300 years of stooge history.

There can be only one reason that supernatural beings would favor our Falcons: The ghosts of Vicks Dogs will be avenged even if it takes an unholy aliance of witches, angels, and willful pigskins. OMG I just invented the cheerleader eligible play!

One more post, and this is it:

Tron5000, I wasn’t trying to police the boards; I was simply shocked to see such a rift within the Atlanta fanbase based on something as stupid as skin color.

But let’s be fair, here, and put it this way; if Matt Ryan were the one in prison and Michael Vick was the emerging rookie superstar, there would be no race issue discussed here. He and the Falcons would have an entire city behind them, instead of all this negative talk going on between their fans.

But as it is, things are clearly different, and in a way I just can’t wrap my head around. I mean, Vick was my quarterback when he played for the Falcons; he both amazed me with his athleticism and frustrated me with what seemed to be consistently unrealized potential. But the bottom line is, the man did some despicable things that have absolutely nothing to do with the color of his skin. Unfortunately it affected not only him but also an entire team and city. To think that such a large portion of Atlantans (mostly black, let’s face it) and other folks rally around him like he’s some god or something, to the point of even refusing to support the Falcons organization, is absolutely mystifying; no matter Vick’s prowess (or anyone else’s) as an athlete, character should be the most important issue in determining whether a player should be admired, NOT numbers. That’s why I’ve always admired Warrick Dunn, for instance.

Dennis Rodman was a thug. OJ Simpson’s true nature ultimately got the best of him and he’s on his way to prison. Vick is in prison because he made deliberate, WRONG choices. All of them were great athletes, so what? What good will that do them when they stand before God? Do you think He will be impressed by their statistics or championship rings?

The fact that so many people are rallying around Vick here shows the nature of what THEY value most; NOT the team, NOT character, just blind worship for a single, fallible human being. There is an orgy of hubris among many superstars around sports today that is absolutely sickening, and it’s being fed by so-called fans like these as well as the media. I for one believe that needs to stop, NOW.

Like I said, true fans of any team sport root for the name on the FRONT of the jersey, NOT the one on the back. So all of you “person” supporters, go form your own web communities/blogsites and leave TEAM-ORIENTED ones like this alone!!!!

big easy you keep talking about 2009 schedule; everybody plays the same schedule inside the division except one game; for example we played phillie and Tampa played Dallas; so i’m not sure what you mean; and VS et.al. I thought you guys were saying Mora was bad for vick and the reason is his offense didn’t play to vick’s strengths? Gruden runs the same offense and is more controling than anything Mora did; my guess is Detroit personnally; they need someone like vick; although my guess is the commissioner won’t let vick back in till 2010 or ‘11; again, let me make the point; Atlanta wanted Vick to succeed; Vick did himself in; and in the process he let Atlanta, the Falcons and fans like us down; and killed a couple of dogs in the process;

Vick Supporter, I’m not caucasian nor am I african american. I followed Michael Vick during his tenure at Virginia Tech and supported Michael Vick the day he was drafted. We all know he is a freak of nature and has God given talent. However, if you line Michael Vick up alongside Matt Ryan, I would choose Matt Ryan to be my franchise quarterback. Matt Ryan has displayed confidence, poise, dedication, laser beam focus, matured at an exceedingly rate of speed, displays excellent comprehension of complex defenses, doesn’t make the same mistake twice and sets the example of being a leader ON and OFF the field. I could care less if he was a green alien from Mars. The fact of the matter is is that Vick made a terrible mistake and is paying for it. He will repay his debt and he will play football someday…maybe not in the NFL but we’ll see. I don’t agree with bashing Michael Vick because what’s done is done and it’s time to move on. I’m quite sure he’s regretting his actions every minute of everyday in prison. However, you can’t deny what the Falcons are doing this season. NO ONE saw this coming. So let us enjoy the success that we are having. We’ve suffered enough already.

Who are my people? The only weak person on this blog is you because you can’t let go. I’ll be happy if Vick comes back to the NFL and does well for himself. I thoroughly enjoyed watching Vick play while he was here. He’s not here anymore and, once again, I’m thoroughly enjoying watching Ryan and the Falcons play. Unlike yourself, I can both offer support to Vick and the Falcons. Besides, many people on this blog and in Atlanta do support the falcons without trashing Vick. Are you related to the man or something? You are taking Vick’s departure very hard. GO FALCONS!!!!

@extremus

It is a shame that the blogs on here are so bad, but its just not the black people on here causing it. I get attacked on here because I’m not falling in line with the caucasian folks with the pure Vick hatred. You’re right, Vick did this to himself and I’ve never agreed with what he did. Do i agree that you should lose everything and get a 2 year prison sentence for dogfighting? NO. Did he deserve jail time? YES. I think it was overdone and he was made an example of, thats just what i believe. But for the people on here who say he should be banned for life over some dogs? Thats crazy. I don’t have to fall in line with “them” because they think they’re right. Thats why we have freedom in this country, to say what we want and believe in what we want to believe in, as I believe that Vick will make it back if PETA doesn’t try to add on more unnecessary punishment. I have every right to support Vick, as they do Ryan. If he doesn’t get it done, then it will be the end of the story. Whoever signs #7 will be lucky.

Tavaris Jackson looked just like MV7, he did not scramble, he ran. I love a QB that can scramble, they buy time in the pocket then throw the ball down field. But, a running QB takes off and get a few yards but eventually the offense stalls. I was having LSD flashbacks watching that game yesterday. That is why I was not as big a MV7 fan as most. Now, MV7 did the running thing better than any QB that ever played, even better than Randall Cunningham. But, when MV7 returns to the league he will have to learn how to throw the ball down field to the WR’s and not the TE. TJ7 was making the same mistakes as MV7 and the young Randall Cunningham. The Randall Cunningham that played for the Vikes is what MV7 and TJ7 should aspire to be, Donavon McNabb had sense to learn that early on but Philly never gave him any WR’s worth a crap except crazy TO for a year. For some reason their coaches do not coach them up, except Dan Reeves before MV7 helped run him out of town.

There is a movie called Redemption starring Jamie Foxx, That character claimed he had changed but in the end he was still executed….I’m just saying, take it for what it is. HAHAHAHAHAHA

I love how this blog is divided between Pro-Vick and Pro-Team of 08. Vick ‘fans’ hate the Falcons for what??? It wasn’t like the organization MADE him take his money and invest in a dogfighting ring instead of more gainful financial investments. It wasn’t like the organization turned him in. What beef do you have against our TEAM??? Vick will never play for the Falcons again…his NFL days are done. I supported Vick while he was here, because he was part of our TEAM. You know what, I didn’t stop liking the birds when Jessie Tuggle, Jamal Anderson, and Terrence Mathis retired. This is our TEAM!!! This city is full of people who will be GLAD to fill your seats to support a team over a person. Go be Dallas fans if you like drama.

I know one thing, the Falcons fans should be thanking Arthur Blank for getting his a* out of the way and letting football people handle the football side. You all act like Ryan came in and turned everything around by himself, when Michael Turner is the one who should get the credit. that just goes to prove my point….Matt Ryan is the QB that you people have always wanted from the beginning, even when Vick carried the franchise on his back. They want the blue eyed, blond haired qb because they are able to identify w/him easier. Even if Ryan has a bad season next year, they will still protect him and make excuses for him. Pretty sad, but its just the way of the world…..

By Rakim, that is real talk. Most people on these blogs don’t know that Vick ran with some real “Killers” and “Dirt Dealers” ala Ray Lewis. They trumped up the felonies to make him snitch on the real dirt dealers. He coped the Dog fighting and the trumped up felonies because he had to keep his mouth shut. Also, the league owe him because he did not tell on the other athletes and entertainers that were into dogfighting amongst other things. It would have been a bigger mess. The Feds play hard ball, if you don’t give up the goods they will sock it to you. Word is a number one selling ATL rapper did some snitching to save himself on some gun charges. It adds up. True Vick did it to himself. Most of those who call him a thug on these blogs don’t know the half. But, I understand both you and VS point. Because when you are young and have the world handed to you and have been treated in a special way all your life you make mistakes but, 23 months for not doing the polices job is too much time and then throw in PETA in the equation. But, those 23 months may have saved that mans life because he was traveling down a dangerous road. Things happen for a reason. Same with you Rakim, those 3 years may have saved yours. You don’t know what could have happened if you kept doing dirt. There is no such thing as honor amongst thieves. The ones you think are you homies will do you in for a dime. Look at Ray Lewis he is a great example. That man realized what he almost threw away and what he almost threw it away over wasn’t worth that dime.

Lighten up. QB comparison (MV/MR) is simple, merely go to the historical stats (MV NEVER passed for 3000yds—MR=3280yds; highest QB rating MV=81.6— MR=89.7; MV TD/INT ratios= 16/8, 14/12, 15/13, 20/13—MR=15/9; highest completion % MV= 56.4— MR=61.7). MR=ROOKIE. Falcons now have a leader who is also a pretty good QB. Listen to his teammate’s comments on his command of the huddle. Lets let the future play out. RIGHT NOW you have a 10-5 playoff team led by a ROY QB —wouldn’t it be nice to just enjoy the moment. By the way, I told you so in August.

Congratulations to the Falcons for making the playoffs! Nice turn around. However, I have to remind you that the road to the Superbowl goes through East Rutherford and the Giants. The Panthers put up a good fight last night, but the Giants beat them with their signature game: run it down your throat, and play solid D. There are lots of Giants haters out there, as well as those who still won’t admit that the Giants are a legitimate “powerhouse”. That is until they come to your house and trample you. Well, this year, everyone goes to their house. Good luck, you’ll need it.

By whyucry?, I cannot explain to you the meaning of my post, either you get it or you don’t. From time to time I see people on these blogs questioning peoples education for various reason. I know I can’t spell my grammar is terrible, but I am educated. But, that is irrelevant. Most of the guys in these blogs that talk about football and other topics are very intelligent and their education level does not matter. I would rather be uneducated than unintelligent. I know plenty of educated people that just can’t figure out the meaning of life. By whyucry?, I cannot educated you on life, you have to live that and learn for yourself. The conversation between me, Rakim and VS was about life topics. About reality and not the fantasy world. It’s like the MATRIX, sometimes what you see is not reality. Can someone tell me what is the criteria for the Falcons to make the playoff. We(Falcons) went into their 15th game with Cowboys and the Bucs holding the edge over us. Meaning if we all finished with the same record, the Falcons are the odd man out. The Falcons, Cowboys and Bucs could still have the same record 10-6 but suddenly the Falcons clinch a wildcard and the Bucs and Cowboys are still struggling to get in the playoffs. How did that come to pass?

You do NOT have the right to ruin things for everyone. You suck!!!!! By the way, I don’t think that there even were AJC blogs in 2001. I might be wrong about that, but you still suck!!! So what have you accomplished today? You proved that you suck!!!

Vick Supporter, every time I start thinking of you as a decent human being, you wind up going on a racist rant about caucasians and blue eyed quarterbacks. I pity you. You are no better than joebrave etal.

Biggy, that was not directed specifically towards you. Sorry to burst your bubble. But wow, I really opened up a can of worms on that education thing. Bitter much? When did I attack your grammar? Hell, when did I mention your name? I simply asked why can’t people understand that is was more than, how’d VS put it, “just dogs” and “throw in Peta”? It was a federal crime!Feds don’t f*ck around.

And if you guys want to talk reality thats great. But don’t be upset when someone happens to respond to something you think is directed to you. This is a public forum. You guys want private convos exchange numbers.

I’m having a hard time relating to many of these so-called blogs. Does anyone from the AJC bother to read them and filter out those that obviously involve hate mongering? It’s ok to be a fan or non-fan of 07 but no matter which side you take let’s try to keep things at least civil. Trying to find out how fans actually feel about these Falcons is what most people that read these blogs want to know. Perhaps I and others might actually learn something important that we weren’t aware of about this team. Will somebody from the AJC please so some screening and help stop this madness? Lets talk sports for a change.I lived in Atlanta for 25 years before moving to Augusta and been a Falcon fan since the beginning. If the AJC can’t, for some reason do some policing, please stop posting blogs period!!!

I love the Viking’s quarterback. They can win with him. Okay, I’ll tell them how: Call a quarterback draw on every other possession during the entire game. That will give your wideouts that step they need and it will open up the middle big time.

Yesterday, the middle was WIDE OPEN during critical pass plays, but the coach of the vikings couldn’t anticipate when or why.

Thankfully, he doesn’t get what’s implied when your quarterback has that kind of running attack.

But he’ll get it. Then watch out. Cause that viking D is nearly as good as ours.

Falcons: Superbowl rings for all.

Why do you keep mentioning Vicks eyes being brown and Matt Ryans blue. I have a question for you? Did Vicks brown eyes prevent Arthur Blank for making Vick the highest paid player in the NFL with the richest contract in NFL history of $250 million dollars? Vicks color had nothing to do with it. At the time Vick signed that historic, lucrative contract Vick was making more than Tom Brady and Peyton Manning, quarterbacks who have accomplished a lot more than Vick, yet Vick was given $250 million dollars. You see color has absolutely nothing do with success. If Vick hadnt messed up we probably wouldnt have drafted Matt Ryan and Vick would still be the quarterback. But Vick messed up big time and his MUST pay for his crimes and pay his debt to society before he can be given another chance. Why dont you vick supporters just be patient and wait for the judicial system to run its course instead of tormenting us with your offensive rhetoric. When Vick gets out, he will be signed by an Arena Football Team where you can watch his decline and demise for yourself.

MIKE VICK CONVICT SUPPORTERS can all go kiss MATT RYAN’s WHITE A$$ b/c he is going to lead the FALCONS to the playoffs in his Rookie year as a QB and the undesputed leader of the Offense!

FACE IT, IT KILLS YOU that a WHITE QB is leading the FALCONS to the PLAYOFFS while your failed HERO sits in the federal pen and isn’t going to be playing in the NFL anytime soon!

FRAKING RACISTS…all of you VICK jock sniffers and Matt Ryan haters!

GO FALCONS, they DON’T NEED any of you VICK FANS to support them…the REAL Fans support them, it’s ALL that counts!

Hey Jeff George you must have been hit too many times if you think you were the first QB to take Atlanta to the Super Bowl. The fact is that title belongs to Chris Chandler.

The success the Falcons have had this year can be attributed to getting rid of players like Michael Vick and DeAngelo Hall both who were ME players instead of TEAM players. Also having a coach along the lines of Leeman Bennet and Dan Reeves.

The Falcons drafted a Top-10 QB and people wanted a DT with 1 sack and 1 forced fumble.

People, you don’t build a Super Bowl-winning team out of a franchise DT. Yes, there have been many great ones on the Super Bowl teams. But when you talk about the Patriots and their success, who is more relevant to the conversation, Tom Brady or Richard Seymour?

You build a team form the QB out. Aside from Brady (a freak occurrence in a 6th-round pick), look at the recent Super Bowl-winning QBs: Peyton, Eli and Roethlisberger. All 1st round picks, and only Big Ben went to a good team. Ryan is lightyears ahead of where he should be, and that’s the reason the Falcons are as well.

As a Falcon Fan living here in the Northern Plains and reading through these posts, it is obvious that for some, the Civil War may never end in the South. How a discussion of race can even be in the vicinity of the feel-good story of the Falcons this year is unimaginable to an “outside” observer. Regardless of color, successful quarterbacks in the NFL are not revered for amazing highlights, but for being leaders off-the field and/or being field generals on the field. Go back and look at almost every Super Bowl winning quarterback and you will see that this is true. A true team fan appreciates the success of the team, not the consquences of a player who for whatever reason, could not be part of that success. Congratulations to the 2008 Atlanta Falcons organization on an amazing turn-around from a fan who appreciates your effort and resolve.

The ‘98 Falcons team that went to the Super Bowl was quarterbacked by Chris Chandler, not Jeff (I need another close-up shot) George; he was gone a couple of years by then and throwin’ a tantrum with the Raiders.

In all fairness to Vick, he did help guide the second and fifth best seasons (‘04 and ‘02) in franchise history, up to this point. But NFL defenses caught up with Vick; he couldn’t hit the red side of a barn with his throws and he was only a 12 yard ESPN highlight run a week. Matt Ryan is the man, he’s smarter and has a DESIRE to win.
