Johnson happy at Tech, no matter who calls
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Sometimes, a coach doesn’t need to say he had options to go elsewhere, even when everybody knows he had options to go elsewhere.
Did Auburn call?
“I could tell you, but then I’d have to kill you,” Paul Johnson said, smiling.
So what you’re saying is, Auburn called?
“I try not to talk about that stuff. It doesn’t serve any purpose. Once you’ve answered that, you have to answer that all the time. So what if they called? What good does it do to tell everybody? It doesn’t help me. It doesn’t help them. So it’s best to leave it at that.”
But if Auburn didn’t call, wouldn’t you just say that?
“I’m happy at Georgia Tech. And that’s where I plan on being for a while.”
Georgia Tech has a football coach. A good football coach. A very good football coach who suddenly finds himself as the flavor of the month.
Would you have expected all three back in August?
The Jackets defeated Boston College, Clemson, Florida State, Miami and Georgia this season. At 9-3, a win over LSU in the Chick-fil-A Bowl would give them a double-digit win total for the first time since 1998, and only the third time in 52 seasons.
These kinds of results get a coach noticed. So it wasn’t surprising that: 1) Johnson’s name was dropped into coaching searches, most notably Auburn; 2) Dan Radakovich is moving quickly to significantly upgrade his contract, which averages about $1.6 million per year in guarantees, relatively modest for a coach who beats Boston College, Clemson, Florida State, Miami and Georgia in his first year.
“It’s being in this market,” Radakovich said. “It’s part of college football. You have to know that when he has the year that he had, and with his track record, at some point people will come knocking on the door, and he becomes a hotter commodity than he was a year ago.”
Johnson, chatting the other day before a bowl preview luncheon, didn’t have to confirm Auburn was interested. That’s kind of obvious. (Radakovich’s non-denial denial: “I don’t want to comment on somebody else’s coaching search.”)
But it’s just as obvious that Johnson wasn’t interested. He is happy here. He likes the school, the administration, the players. He likes being back in the South after six winters in Annapolis, Md., at the Naval Academy.
There’s also this: “I’ve been here one year. It wouldn’t send much of a message to anybody if you bolted on people after one year. I’d like to think I’ve got a little more about me than that.”
Georgia coach Mark Richt recalled that when he was an assistant coach at Florida State he was offered the Pittsburgh job. He asked his wife, Katharyn, whether she could see herself living in Pittsburgh the rest of her life. When she said no, he turned the job down, even though he wanted to be a head coach.
In that sense, Richt and Johnson are bookends. Neither seems consumed with the next destination. They are the anti-Petrinos.
“I’ve never been a job-jumper,” Johnson said. “An old coach told me once you don’t have to take every job that’s offered to you. That’s pretty sage advice. When you get into a good situation and you like the people you’re working with and you like where you live, then it takes something special to get you to leave.”
That old coach: Erk Russell.
Johnson has achieved a lot in a short amount of time at Tech. But his greatest accomplishment is changing the mind-set of the program. This is the campus where former athletics director Dave Braine used academic standards as a crutch for limited expectations.
Johnson came to Tech, not merely because he felt he had accomplished all he could at Navy, but because, he said: “I felt like we could win a championship here, and that’s something I wanted to accomplish.”
And he’s not answering the phone.

What can I say, we have a great coach. Why would any coach want to get involved in the mess that is auburn. There is too much control by one booster. The school has a weak AD and president. Bobby Lowder is gonna end up getting his school disaccredited due to his constant meddling.

I am by no means a GT fan but I am a Paul Johnson fan. I remember his days at Ga Southern. He obviously learned alot for Erk Russell. I knew his offense would work if the players believed in the system. This guy didnt win at Navy because people gave them the victories. He coached a team that believed in him and he in them. The same thing will happen at Tech. PJ is a proven winner.

Sounds good. Now he will start bringing in more and more of his style players — and he did pretty well with those who were recruited for a different offense. He’s a winner who is also a class act.

I admire PJ for sayng “no thanks” to Auburn after just one year. But the truth is…it had alot more to do with 1)the athletic officials at AU not having their act together (Bobby Lowder is a back stabbing, power hungry, contol freak)and 2) they weren’t offering near-Saban money. If those two items had been in place, PJ would be long gone. Who wants to coach in a high school statdium when you can go to a big-time program in a man’s conference? Bobby Dodd stadium looks like Buford high School’s if you take away the press box. There is one difference though….Buford has multiple state championships in the last 2 years….the nerds have 1 in the last 8.

I don’t think Tech fans have much to worry about. Paul Johnson is not a coach that an elite BCS program would be interested in. His offense is suited for teams like Tech that cannot bring in top 10 level talent year after year. If you have that kind of talent you do not run the triple option offense. It is speculative whether Johnson would be succssful running a traditional offense. He does not have much experience with it. Tech is a great fit for Johnson and vice versa. I think he will be there for a very long time.

Tbone, I guess that buttocks is still a little sore from that A-spanking between the hedges. Now let us reflect a tad….How many folks you think will occupy all those seats at that so called big-time program when that great hire (not) stinks the joynt up? Last time I checked, the nerds (your term) spanked the big-timers from the man conference (also your bs)at the mega stadium and Buford HS stadium south (more of your crap). Wow………How soon we forget.

Hey Tbone, kinda hurts to be thumped by Tech, doesn’t it?
First, I see you learn to spell at UGA. The word is spelled “stadium”. And who wants to coach in Historic Grant Field, well that would be PJ.
Second, Tech has had an NCAA championship in the last 20 years, how about UGA? No?
Third, a man’s conference? Tech was 2-0 against that “man’s conference”, and will soon be 3-0.
Finally, you know that Tech will keep thumping UGA year after year as long as PJ is at Tech. Makes you kind of mad doesn’t it? TBone, time to go back and plow the back 40, or whatever else you need to do on the farm.

According to Sports Illustrated, Johnson INTERVIEWED for the Auburn job. To quote:
“Before hiring Chizik — who, it must be noted, was an outstanding defensive coordinator at Auburn from 2002-04 and at Texas from 2005-06 — Jacobs interviewed Buffalo coach Turner Gill, TCU coach Gary Patterson, Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson, Louisiana Tech coach Derek Dooley, Ball State coach Brady Hoke and others.”
http://www.fannation.com/siblogs/thesweep/posts/32221-chizik-hiring-no-upgrade-for-auburn?eref=fromSI
So the question to have asked is not whether Auburn called (as Schultz notes everyone knows they did), but rather did Johnson interview and/or show a serious interest in the job, and if so, why?
Schultz’s opinion notwithstanding, Johnson’s blandishments today about the virtues of staying put shouldn’t be allowed to fog the fact of his interest last week in the Auburn position.

Listen, CPJ said he wants to win championships. He is certainly set up to do that much more quickly at Tech than at Auburn or any other school that has an opening. We have a bunch of studs that are only going to be juniors next year. He could realistically run the table the next two years given the competition in the ACC and the talent he has at his disposal.
Not only is he in a position to win a conference championship more quickly by staying than he would by going to Auburn, he is in a better position to win a national championship. He would be crazy to leave.
With all that said, we need to step up an pay the man what he deserves.

Lowder is a cancer. Auburn people need to finally realize that and take steps to get rid of him before he ruins the program. Lowder’s example is all around us: the ego-crazed ceo who blindly and obsessively runs his company into the ground and destroys it. That is what Lowder is doing to Auburn and Auburn people will have to stop him or else get used to being non-competitive in the SEC. You may not like what Barkley is saying but there is more than just an element of truth to his opinion. He knows what and who the problem is at Auburn. Auburn: find a way to get rid of Lowder and get things back on track. It’s the only solution you have for Auburn football’s future.

Tbone, like I told you before, PJ would have to be a fool to take the job that is the AU abortion. Richt had better dash for the U because we all know what happens to GA coaches who keep getting their butts thumped by Tech and it is going to happen. Who cares whether he was called or not? He was afterall negotiating a new contract after beating BC, Clemson, FSU, Miami, UGA, and impressively so. Hooray for PJ, an AWESOME year. He says he’ll be here a while and I take him at his word at that. GREAT!
He deserves everything he gets for wiping out a couple bad losing streaks (FSU, UGA) and stomping Miami (with a hobnail boot) to extend a nice win streak.
Such an enjoyable football season this year! One more jinx to go (LSU/Peach bowl), and then it will be truly an ASTOUNDING year.
Everyone is excited about GT football again after what seemed an eternity of frustration that was suddenly and miraculously wiped clean by PJ. Way to go coach! DRad needs a raise too for taking the chance on bringing coach here (naysayers said the triple option wouldn’t work.)

Showing a lot of class there, Paddy - unlike T-Bone (what kind of handle is “T-Bone,” anyway, lol). Smart UGA fans know that PJ is a good thing, not only for Tech, but, irony of ironies - for UGA. Why? Nothing promotes good sport like a rivalry. Tech wins a few more, which I hope it does in the coming years, and we have a rivalry “re-born.” That makes both teams better, leading to more national prominence for both teams - UGA, which has had plenty, and Tech, which has had virtually none. Now that’s what I like to think of as “Good, Clean Old Fashioned Hate.”

Man, after I wrote this, I thought, what a long rant. It was so intelligent though, I figured I’d still post the whole thing…
A few comments, first on Paul Johnson. For every one that is or ever was worried about PJ going to Auburn, you need to search the man’s soul. With that, I mean look at his comments, his track record and his history. At each step of the way, he accepted a job and started with a set of goals. The goals always involved building a program and winning consistently. Never did he move on until he accomplished that set of goals at that level. It was never about money. It was always about building a winning tradition and gaining respect wherever he was at that time. When we reached the pinnacle of where he was, only then did he accept a position that was both a challenge and better for his career. Did the same at that level, too (GSU to Navy). Until he reached the pinnacle there. He was never going to win an MNC at Navy, but he did raise that program to a prominent level. Next stop, a national program with the ability to reach the next set of goals. That is GT.
Is this the VERY last stop on PJ’s train? Depends. If he reaches his goals, which I believe are to 1)beat UGA consistently (i.e., more than once), 2) win the ACC (more than once) 3) compete for an MNC (at least once) will he move on? No one knows. I hope not. However, I truly believe that, if he were to move on, it would only be to an ELITE college coaching job. Which Auburn is not. You can debate the top 10, but for me that would include the likes of USC, Texas, OK, PSU, UF, ND, MI, etc. And even some of those don’t even look that great right now. For PJ, it is never about JUST the money. Auburn could have offered him $5 mill a year and he would have turned it down? Why? Because he measures himself on success and not how much he makes. I mean , to a man, he makes enough already. He makes almost $2 mill. What is an extra $3 mill on top? An even BIGGER house for him and his wife? Please. The man does not drive a Corvette. His balls are big enough and he doesn’t need the media hype to make himself feel better about himself. He would take the next job for a challenge and to prove a point, not because some bozo booster has deep pockets.
So, what about Auburn and the non-hiring of Turner Gill. So many thoughts on this. First, I am sick of all of the media saying that there are only a few minority coaches in college football and this needs to change because, otherwise, it is racially motivated. If I am not mistaken, about a month ago, we, as a nation, voted, as a majority, the first African American president into the White House. So, based on the numbers, no one can say that, as a nation, we are racist. That would be a false statement. However, one could argue very easily that there are racially motivated people out there. I would agree 100%. I would say no. Is it the reason for some? Absolutely. Is it racism? No. Is it discrimination? Yes. Why are there no women football coaches? Why are there no or few gay coaches? Why are there few or no Oriental coaches? I could list every faction available. Racist? No. Discriminatory? F@#% yes!!!! But those scenarios are never addressed because they are so far from reasonable(???) thought, that they are never even considered. That being said, based on the events that led up to the hiring of Chizik as head coach, I would also question the motivations of the Auburn community from racial standpoint. The decision might have been driven by a racially motivated faction with the Auburn community. We’ll never know. If I was Turner Gill and I felt like I wasn’t wanted somewhere, would I want to go there? But, let’s be honest. Turner Gill has nothing to prove to Auburn or the SEC. He would not be a ground breaker. Jackie Robinson broke ground. Rosa Parks broke ground. MLK broke ground. Hell, Sylvester Croom broke ground. He was the first African American coach in the SEC. Gill wouldn’t even be that. So what does he have to prove? Nothing. He would be a statistic. Under a microscope no less. Could he win in the SEC? Probably. So what. Why go work for a bunch of people that reluctantly hire you and hope you fail so they can prove themselves right? Not worth it. Turner Gill will get his due and in the right situation, no less. People in everyday jobs get hired all the time that are less qualified than others for various reasons. Is it right? Who knows, but at the end of the day I don’t want to work for someone that hired me because they “had to” to or “should have.” I want to work for someone that wants me and has a true desire for me to succeed. It all worked out in Gill’s favor, and I think he knows that, regardless of the media hype.

Yes, I’ve accepted (finally) that you guys beat us (even though we spoon-fed you the win….just like FSU did). But here is the real deal, this hardly speaks of Tech now “competing” with the Dawgs….more like “even a blind bee stings an acorn every once in a while”. The nerds beating the dawgs is similar to Toledo beating Michigan in the big house….or like Gardner-Webb beating UK in roundball at Rupp. In other words….a once in a blue moon fluke. But hey, congratulations anyway. Just remember this….and remember ya daddy Tbone told ya…..PJ, as sharp as he is, WILL NOT CARD ANOTHER NERD VICTORY AGAINST CMR. Oh, he WILL be a winning coach, but be ready for him (PJ) to kick out a steady diet of 7-5 and 6-6 seasons over the next 5 or 6 years. The triple fumble offense will not win a championship….too many turnovers over the course of a season. Les Miles is licking his chops to line up against it. Bob, you’re right (and probably a moron). Since the blog is about Johnson, I’ll assum you were referring to him being a one hit wonder. What makes all GT fans (and I mean EVERY SINGLE ONE OF US) excited about CPJ, is that he has won his entire career. Who win’s at Navy? He won championships at Georgia Southern. And, you can feel free to say “championships in Div II ball don’t equal championships in Div I ball.” But, of course you’d be wrong. Tbone, I don’t know what to make of you—you’re much more complex than most Georgia fans. In one breath, you sound winsome and almost likable for a major rival. And then you go on and say stupid things such as predicting PJ to go 7-5, 6-6. Please be serious. Richt is a great man and a good coach, but honestly, do you think he’s as good a coach as the guy who in his first *year at our “high school”-like program won *nine games?
The thing about the Rednecks that always kills me is how they trash our program (weak conference, all nerds, etc.). Man, it must kill them to lose to such an “inferior” program. It is amazing what one win does to the average north avenue’s mind.
yes, tech has a very good coach and they will be competitive ,but the win was not a blow-out as some have suggested!
the big question is will tech keep pj long term and yes, this is where your overall commitment comes into play.
so far the tech fan commitment to paul johnson has not been overwhelming.
coach johnson did in fact interview for the auburn job that has to concern you guys.
you know that more interviews will come in the future,
i love the fact that you guys after one win are ready to declare the georgia game for next year has already been decided. wow, how stupid can you be; ole how the mighty will fall!!!

You have to trust a school to lay it on the line like CPJ has. Could you imagine telling Lowder down at Auburn you were going to stick around. He would have used that for all the juice it was worth. That is why Tech is making strides to a championship and Auburn is going backwards. The ACC as a whole is a far better place to coach and have a career if coaching is what you want to do. Because they are in major cities mostly the press is not beamed in on their every move. It took Tech fans a lot longer to realize they had a great coach largely because the press was so ho hum about it. When you go back and look at what this guy accomplished and the kind of man he is it was a no brainer yet the press was more excited about Lewis from East Carolina years ago than the funny offense CPJ was bringing in. I keep looking at guys like Gary Patterson the TCU coach that coaches in a rather academic atmosphere, recruit against Texas and Ok. and holds his own. Florida was very successful hiring from this pool with a Utah coach. Why isn’t anyone looking at the App. State guy that wins like Georgia Southern use to do. Maybe these guys won’t come to Auburn. Maybe Auburn needs to look deep and maybe even look at Tech as an example of a place coaches want to come to because Tech has their back.. Maybe the reason the press didn’t make a big deal out of CPJ was because Tech managed them better than most and kept the expectations down. One thing Auburn can depend on is the coach at Alabama will not stay there forever. You are dealing with an entirely different character, and that is who Auburn wants to be. That league is like the movie stars and all their divorces. Different stokes for different folks.

“Tech has had an NCAA championship in the last 20 years, how about UGA? No?”
That’s right, we forgot about Tech’s SPLITionship. Isn’t that the year they couldn’t beat an 0-10-1 North Carolnia team to make it undisputed? (Yes, they beat Georgia, but in 1990 that was not much of a big deal now, was it?)

Another jab from PJ to VanGoober who went to Georgia Southern and scrapped the triple-option while making disparaging remarks about the offense that PJ runs. The Goob then runs the Georgia Southern program into the ground before bolting after just one year there. “I’ve been here one year. It wouldn’t send much of a message to anybody if you bolted on people after one year. I’d like to think I’ve got a little more about me than that.”

The mounting support and energy behind CPJ result from his intensity, inspiration, and committed work ethic. These are 18-23 year old kids that respond to discipline and coaching. To make fun of his offense misses the point, he could coach any scheme because he is just that, a real coach, which is more than Xs and Os. CPJ demands the pursuit of excellence and a complete effort in that pursuit. Kids respond enthusiastically to that. A team sport always allows for the opportunity for discipline and teamwork to overcome better individual ability, whether you believe GT has less ability or not.

Alot of you dawg fans forget a couple of things. Our ENTIRE starting O is coming back next year-older, stronger, faster, and smarter! And most will be back the year after that! If that’s not enough, we are only losing basically three off our D line next year. Ya’ll put up a lot of points on us this year, but that was against a makeshift D we put out because of injuries. I’m not going to talk smack after one win, because of the previous seven games, but look for this “nonrivalry” game, that alot of you referred to earlier in the season, to rekindle like an inferno if we win another one or two! Bottom line, we are back!

When Johnson came here, he said he wanted it to be his last move. Look it up; it’s in his arrival speech. Now he says he wants to be here “for a while”. So Tech is doomed to lose all good coaches, right? Other places are better places? It’s depressing. We fans are fools to believe in any coach. All they want is the big schools and the big money.

Why? His high-school offense won’t work in a real conference like the SEC. He won’t be able to recruit all those NFL QBs that CBR and CGO’L and Chan did, that they expect in the SEC. Everybody knows that.

Diggity Dawg…you call 1990 a SPLITionship but I’m sure you have no idea what happened that season. GT was 11-0-1 to Colorado’s 11-1-1. What every one forgets is that Colorado’s game against Missouri that year was the notorious “Fifth Down Game” where they lost…but a mistake by the officals gave them an extra “5th” down on the last play of the game and they “maybe” ran it in for a TD. Colorado should have been 10-2-1. They also benefited from the phantom clipping call on a Rocket Ishmail kickoff TD in the Bowl Game while GT destroyed Nebraska 45-21.
Also if you get a chance pick up the “Sports Illustrated Celebrates 75 Years of SEC Football” issue. There is an article that does a great job of showing how laughably lucky uga(sic) was in 1980. Were you even born that long ago?

I think the key here is that at Auburn the head coach is about 10 names down the list of who’s in charge of the program. At GT I think its pretty clear that Paul Johnson stands alone as the man in charge. Not that Paul Johnson’s main concern is being “in charge” but it sure is easier to build a winning program when you don’t have to clear decisions with Robert E. Lowder or whoever else is wielding power down in L.A. In fact the Jackets situation is a lot like the Falcons situation now. They have a idea guy (Dmitrov/Radakovich) who sets a vision and standard and went out to find a coach (Smith/Johnson) who is highly capable of accomplishing that vision and that idea guy gets out of the coach’s way and helps him get what he needs. All this talk about giving Johnson a new contract, shouldn’t we also be thanking Dan Radakovich for doing an excellent job as well. We wouldn’t want another school to poach him and leave us with someone like Dave Braine again who thinks 8 wins is all we should hope for.
And I don’t see anywhere that Johnson could go where he’d have a clear path to a national title shot. As prestigious as the SEC is and has been, with the way things are at Auburn currently, what are the chances that Auburn could move past Alabama, LSU, or even Ole Miss consistently enough to compete, and oh by the way even if you got past all those, you’d be dealing with Florida and UGA in the title game. The ACC has not had a high profile recently, but this last year proved that while there was not any “elite” teams, the conference was the toughest around. And in that conference GT, as young and green as they are, at the end of the season had proven they were the best team in the league. Now extrapolate that with more experience and more recruiting of players who fit the system, and you can see a clear roadmap to making GT a national contender. Especially if GT keeps doing well against their non-conference opponents (particularly SEC opponents, 2-0 now, maybe 3-0 after the bowl).
Imagine, what this team could be like with a senior laden roster. That’s what the 2010 season will be like. Nesbitt, Dwyer, Bey-Bey Thomas will all be seniors and Roddy Jones will be a Junior on offense with a sr/jr laden offensive line. On defense you’d have seniors Burnett, Derrick Morgan, Butler, Reese, Jefferson and juniors Reid, Taylor, Kyle Jackson. If they can add good dline recruits then the potential for a 2010 run at the national conversation doesn’t seem ridiculous. Win the ACC and Orange bowl next year to get, pardon the pun, some “buzz” generated and then win the ACC again and see what happens.
Oh yeah, we like Paul Johnson.

Man, I love tech football and I love Paul Johnson, but it kills me that in the world of non-professional sports you can look at 1.6 million a year and call it “underpaid”. Johnson is not the kind of coach that can be succesful long-term at a “football” school. On the field and off, he is willing to risk much to get much. The triple option requires the coach to allow the offense to make instant decisions that could change the game (good or bad)at any time. “Football” schools where the AD listens to the boosters more than the coach are risk averse. I could not believe that CPJ tried an onside kick in the first half of a close conference game, but so what, he’s the coach, I;m not! If he’d have lost that game at a place like Tennesee, they’d hang him in effigy and probably fire him. At Tech, Johnson can take risks and know that he will still have a job, even after seasons that may not be as succesful as this one. Are we and DRad smart enough to recognize the risks and live with the bad results some years as well as the good? Are we smart enough to stick with a good thing through any lean years that may come? I hope so.

I’m not sure what the big fuss is all about.
1) Paul Johnson has no control over who calls his agent.
2) Paul Johnson had several opportunities to leave Navy before he decided to even listen to GA Tech’s interest in bringing him on board as our Head Coach.
3) If Paul Johnson was only interested in money, he would have accepted positions offered to him other than the GA Tech job, including some open at the same time as ours.
I personally agree that Paul Johnson deserves a raise and every kudos he can get. Has has been a winner everywhere he has been, he has instilled a new sense of direction and pride in the program, and given GA Tech back the advantage that it seemed to have lost from the Dave Braine years.
At that time, it was assumed that GA Tech would have to settle for mediocrity due to its academics and size of the Institution. For Paul Johnson, it’s one of his selling points and something he uses to bring in players who focus on “team” approach that are true scholar athletes.
Paul Johnson takes players, puts them in the best position to win, makes them proud to be Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, and insures that at the end of the day, they will leave with one of the finest educations in the Country.
It’s obvious Coach Johnson loves his work and it’s more than money than motivates him. Sure, we all have egos, and I’m sure he wants to be recognized as one of the top Coaches in the Country, and appreciated accordingly, and it is dang well deserved, but at the end of the day, Paul Johnson is a COACH. He’s not a politician and he’s not a rock star; Paul Johnson’s a COACH, and GA Tech’s lucky to have him.
Now if we can all just stay out of his way, and enjoy his work, I bet he’ll be even happier…

Diggity Dawg,
Sorry to confuse you with facts, but the UNC team in 1990 was actually a decent team that finished 6-4-1 with a bowl win.
Also, the ACC was quite strong that year and did quite well in bowls that year, going 3-1-1 (this was before FSU was in the ACC) compared to 2-2 for the SEC (that’s right the ACC had 5 bowl teams to the mighty SECs 4).
I know that the dogs are into revisionist history, but things are not like they were in the 40’s, things are quite easy for everyone to check now.

RT: “Are we smart enough to stick with a good thing through any lean years that may come?”
Yes, we are.
There is no downside for Tech to having CPJ as coach.
Many of the big-name, big-ticket, big-stadium football factories also come with big-time expectations, and have very short time horizons for success - i.e. a lot of career risk for a coach.
The only coaches that have a chance to be successful in that environment have to have a proven track record, and have to be able to recruit NFL-caliber players consistently, and have to have a track record of having those players get drafted.
In that sense, I think that is why Chan Gailey (offering a pro-style offense) was able to recruit as well as he did.
I don’t think many 5-star linemen are going to sign up for 4 years of running CPJ’s option and cut-blocking at GaTech if they really think they are NFL material - at least that’s what I think Rodney Garner is telling recruits.
The other side of the coin is that college football tends to adapt to innovative offenses - witness the adoption of the “spread” offense. It could very well be the case that CPJ’s offense might propagate as rapidly as the Wishbone and the Veer offenses did 40 years ago.
In the pro game the defensive players are physically more gifted and quicker to react than even above-average college players. Since you really can’t speed up the offensive option decision-making process beyond a certain minimum elapsed time, this means the time that the window of opportunity is open on any given play decreases, and proportionally with it the potential for big plays. So, I do agree that this offense is, at some point, limited in its potential for adoption into the football factories and pro ranks.
All that having been said, there are plenty of 4-star recruits out there who want a solid education and would enjoy being part of an innovative, winning football program, so I’m not worried in any way about whether CPJ will be able to get the players he needs to run his system properly.
But the QB is the key… you have to have quality depth at QB; I imagine that in any year there are maybe 5 high-school QBs that might be suitable for this offense; and we will be fighting with a lot of schools running the spread offense for their services.
I can’t wait for next season …!

They used to say Bear Bryant could beat you with his players or take your players and still out coach you. That rule applies here - PJ could have beaten Tech with Georgia’s players this year. Richt is a great guy, well respected by all but he really is just a glorified cheerleader as proven by his show against Tech this year. PJ is the real DEAL AND COACH!

so the techies think that georgia had it’s best shot in 08, how so?
we had the worst year for injuries with our best o/lineman and d/lineman hit by major injuries, we will have another great top ten recruiting class, we will have more depth throughtout the team and yes, we are very young.
two of the top ten qb’s nationally will be coming in this year and probably our best athlete will be our qb this year, if stafford leaves).
it is truly amazing what one win does for you guys. where have you guys been for so long, i believe under the porch licking your wounds.
it is good to finally see you guys reappear after such a long absence, but next year will be a new year. the question is, will there be more dawg fans in grant’s tomb than tech mites?
enjoy paul johnson this year because it might be his last, as the irish will probably be looking for a new coach!

Jeff, please! You continue to give these desperate Techmites hope. PJ will bail as soon as the first really big offer comes along. He is driven to prove that his Mickey Mouse offense can compete on a big stage in a bigtime conference. GT can provide him neither venue. Get real.

There’s also this: “I’ve been here one year. It wouldn’t send much of a message to anybody if you bolted on people after one year. I’d like to think I’ve got a little more about me than that.”
The above statement is loaded mites. Read between the lines girls. After his first year at Tech there is no reason to leave. The job at Notre Dame isn’t open yet. He couldn’t very well go to Auburn after 1 year for a job full of pitfalls only to leave for Notre Dame or Florida when Charlie Weiss is fired now could he? We all know that PJ and the Urban Legend will be the top 2 candidates for that job. Notre Dame? Florida? It doesn’t matter. PJ is a short termer at Tech. He didn’t ride the short bus like most of you deluded bugs. In other words…he ain’t stupid. Tech is nothing more than a stepping stone or a graveyard for coaches.

GT’s “high school” offense exposed UGA’s “middle school” defense. Dwyer and Jones are still running! 45-42!

Even the blind squirrel finds a nut once every 8 years bearcasey. And what the hell does that have to do with PJ leaving Tech anyway. Even you nerds know that he’s on the first thing smokin out of town when one of the big boys offers. Tech is where coaches go to advance or kill their careers. One or the other. Win at a place as screwed up as Tech and advance. Get the typical result at Tech and your career dies. That’s your place in the football universe. Tech is the developmental studies department for coaching. Tech will never be a “destination” job.

PJ really needs to fire his agent and hire you people to find his next job. I’ve never seen a group so eager to get a guy out of town. Whats going on ? Is this all thats happening. PJ’s next job ? Please. I only hope that no one is interviewing CMR because I want to see him at UGA for the next 10 years. But we all know that if he loses to Tech 2 out of the next 3 years, he

Very cute To Sam. So what does that prove? That he’s successful everytime out? Beats the hell out of 1-7 or 13-32 since 1964 doesn’t it Einstien? You enjoy being abused don’t you? Or are you just plain stupid?

Another Georgia Southern voice needs to chime in. You techies separate your shoulders patting yourselves on the back about your “quality” and “intelligence”. Georgia Southern is Division 1, albeit FCS. The fine job PJ is doing for you comes from what he learned from Erk. Y’all remember him, don’t you? He was that master motivator who could take “lesser” players and win most of the time. GATA, anyone? You ought to put PJ up there with Dodd; maybe even above him, because Dodd never figured out how to beat Dooley and Russell. And yellow is still your color because you ve played every other SoCon team and many other 1-AA teams and you still won’t schedule us.

Hey Tbone — The Jackets have 4 National Championships..the most recent of which was in 1990. How many NC does your football program have in comparison? Also, don’t forget that GT won their latest one in 1990 and that school in Athens won their latest one almost 30 years ago. If I were in your shoes I don’t think I’d be barking too much — unless it was yelping from the whipping you got at home in Athens this year.

I think we have a great coach who is in the heart of college football country. He is hungry because he has something to prove. He wants to prove his offense can win. Until Tech wins and wins and he proves his ponit I believe he will remain at Tech. But if he wins a national championship quickly he most likly move on. Tech fans should make him feel like he would never be as happy anywhere else while he is persuing his dream.

I went to our 1st game this year against Jax St to see the new coach and his offense. So did many others. Those that were present that day knew right then he was going to be spectacular and that we were going to win many games this year. The rest of you were going back and forth all year. We are GT afterall - we are very bright. Had you all been there at the very first game - you would have known. There would not have been any mystery. He is THAT GOOD! Educated, bright people get GT and Johnson - uneducated (most bloggers from UGA) don’t get it.
