Looking at the SEC title game, Falcons
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
It was 75 years ago today when the U.S. ratified the 21st Amendment, repealing Prohibition. It was made largely because it turned out closing down distilleries neither reduced crime, nor stopped drinking, nor cured “the social ills of husbands,” as hoped for by the Women’s Christian Temperance Union, as well as organizations that never got invited to parties.
It’s further believed Prohibition actually drove men crazy, including Roy Kramer, who was said to be 67, deranged and very thirsty when he first thought of the BCS in the early 1900s.
Alcohol-related dementia also could explain why invertebrate officials at Auburn would fire coach Tommy Tuberville, and then claim they were “shocked” when the coach resigned. (Shocked! Thank you, Captain Renault.) Last I checked, coaches don’t resign when a school president and athletics director ask them to stay. And they certainly don’t give a “resigned” coach $6 million to rent a U-haul.
Congratulations, Auburn. You have succeeded in making Alabama look like the state’s rational thinkers.
Where was I?
Oh yes. Drinking! Plan on it.
No matter how Saturday’s games turn out, the bowl season again will cry for a swan dive into the bathtub gin. The BCS and its mutant predecessors, the Bowl Coalition and Bowl Alliance, have been here since 1992.
This makes 17 seasons. That’s longer than prohibition.
Fortunately, we still have Alabama vs. Florida for the SEC title. The winner probably goes on to the BCS title game, although I assume nothing before the third martini.
‘Bama is ranked No. 1 by the BCS. Florida is ranked No. 4 and is a 9 1/2-point favorite. Perfect!
Since losing to Mississippi by one point, Florida has scored 38, 51, 63, 49, 42, 56, 70 and 45 points, winning eight straight by an average of 39.6 points. This would be like betting against the Death Star when it pointed that big laser thingy at Alderaan, a tiny peaceful planet that meant no harm.
‘Bama means harm. It just won’t matter. And Georgia fans: I suggest you drink heavily. Gators cover.
Value Menu
(Add fries and an Auburn knee-jerk for 99 cents)
ACC/Is-Anybody-Home Bowl? Jacksonville is feeling a lot better about things. Imagine if the ACC had finally got a title game anybody cared about the year the game moved to civilization (or at least Tampa)? Boston College vs. Virginia Tech: The first 10,000 fans get in half-price. The next 10,000 fans will be in your imagination. Eagles win a pick ‘em.
Big 12: Texas’ reward for finishing 11-1, losing one game by six points and beating Oklahoma and Missouri by a combined 35 points is not making it to the conference title game, which of course matches Oklahoma and Missouri. You know, if the Big 12 can tweak its tiebreaker system just a little bit, it might get Iowa State and Baylor next year. Sooners cover the 16 1/2.
NFL Six-Pack
(Drank one)
Bumetanide Bowl: New Orleans is missing three players who were suspended for taking a banned diuretic. The Falcons’ Grady Jackson also was suspended. But he’ll play, pending appeal, after a simple defense: He walked into Roger Goodell’s office with his favorite babes, Dolly Madison and Laura Scudders, and declared: “Dude, do I look like I use diuretics?” Birds are getting 3 Twinkies. Take ‘em. But they’ll win this straight up.
Cowboys at Steelers: Consecutive wins over the fading Redskins, and two Pacific floaters, Seattle and San Francisco, have Dallas fans thinking their team is good again. By the time this is over, they’ll be back to blaming Jessica Simpson for their softie at quarterback. Steelers cover 3.
Eagles at Giants: Philly’s dead in the NFL, but one more tie and they’ll pass the Sabres in the NHL’s Northeast. Giants cover 7 if they don’t shoot themselves. (I know. Cheap and easy. But that’s just me.)
Vikings at 0-12: Wouldn’t it have seemed a lot more fair if the Lions had made Matt Millen play in one of these games before firing him? Or at least a public stoning. Men of Thor cover. (Line on hold pending more appeals of StarCaps junkies.)
Bucs at Panthers: Georgia fans: Want to know what Monte Kiffin has planned for your quarterback next year? Watch what happens to Jake Delhomme. Take the 3 — and Tampa in a mild upset.
Financial ledger
(On a roll lately, particularly with Tech pick last week. Several of you are in arrears with my 10 percent fee/5 percent for W.P. Goldcard members. Please settle all accounts before Matthew Stafford finishes packing.)
Last week: 9-2 straight up; 7-4 against the line.
Season to date: 97-44 straight up; 72-67-2 against the line.

Jeff…good column as usual…the observation about the Big 12 was so right on!! Go figure that idiotic league! It should have matched up Texas and Oklahoma in a rematch for another true semi-final match. I’m hoping Missouri can upset Oklahoma…but then again, it’d be like the BCS to have the USC Condoms jump Texas too and play the Fla.-Alabama winner.

If the other ACC teams were so good, why weren’t they there? You people amaze me with your stupidity. Why don’t all the teams sit down at the beginning of the season and decide which teams playing would get the best ratings? The teams not chosen can just go home and not bother playing.

I hate to be the one contrarian in the universe…OK, that’s not true, I love it…but IMHO, Bama’s going to be pi$$ed by the lack of respect…everybody’s already punched Florida’s ticket to the BCS Championship…and I say Bama beats the Gators in the best SEC Championship game yet. Yeah, Florida is fast and they have a sexy offense, and they score miles of points, but the Tide is going to hit them in the mouth over and over like they haven’t been hit this year. BTW, did you guys notice that G-Tech beat the Woofers this year? I bring it up in case you didn’t hear about it.

GT Fans, really, you are becoming worse whiners than BC fans. Mack Brown said yesterday on Colin Cowherd’s show when asked about the Big 12 situation. “I told the guys, we win our games, we play for the championship. We didn’t win all our games.” GT, you didn’t win all your games. Win your games, play for the championship. Oh, and the ACC Championship game will never be a full event until you move it where it SHOULD be, to Charlotte, the heart of the ACC! So sorry, ACC officials, that FSU and Miami aren’t the best in your conference. Get over it and leave the game in Charlotte after the 2 in Tampa.

Please don’t mention defense in front of a Georgia fan. They begin to foam at the mouth and sputter something about Willie Martinez. I watched their three losses and I never saw Willie on the field. But, I did see missed tackles and players out of position. I also saw interceptions and fumbles giving the ball away. Bye!

Some quick points:
1-Tech didn’t TCB when we should have, therefore we don’t go to Tampa. Period. No whining here. It doesn’t change the fact that we’re the highest-ranked team in the ACC and one of the hottest, which is why we’re going to the Peach Bowl.
2-To all you SEC folks ragging on the ACC (again), how about a nice hot cup of STHU? 6-4 including Bama and Florida (props to them-SECCG will be must-see TV, ACCCG not so much), 6-1 against the rest, 4-1 if you make it fair and drop BC and Tech. We’ve been through that before and that dog/dawg/bluetick/etc. won’t hunt. You can go back 10 years and the story’s the same.
3-ACCCG needs to move to Charlotte. Decent drive for anyone unless you’re FSU or Miami (wah) or BC (who won’t travel anyway).
4-Nerds? 45-42. Yeah, we’re nerds.

Being in Charlotte won’t cure the ACC CG. They need to play it in the stadium of one of the participants; rotating it between the coastal and atlantic divisions. That is if you want a sell out. Don’t know how much Tampa is paying for this game but it looks like it is gonna be a bust to me.

I did a little research on the SEC and GT:
“In 1932, Georgia Tech and Georgia were two of the original 13 charter members of the Southeastern Conference. Georgia Tech would continue its membership until 1964 after Tech Coach Bobby Dodd began a historic feud with Alabama Coach Bear Bryant. Georgia Tech left the SEC concerning the allocation of scholarships and student athlete treatment. Georgia Tech would later attempt re-entry but the re-entry was eventually voted down. The biggest opponent of Georgia Tech’s re-entry was Georgia.”
GT will never join the SEC again because (A) we don’t want to! And (B) UGA would vote NO, every time, and rightfully so.

If we are talking about expectations, UGA did in fact suck. Preseason #1, remember? They may have lost to three ranked teams (GT included), but they did not have any big wins. If we are not talking about expectations, then they had a good year. 9 wins in the SEC is always good.
Florida is just plain spanking people lately. But i dont think Bama’ is going to roll over. Should be a great game.

The stupidity of the ACC is mind boggling.
“Fans don’t want to drive to Jax cause it’s too far? Okay, let’s move it even further away from all but 1 of our member schools. Maybe that will help.”
It would take 3 DAYS to drive to Tampa from Boston College. That’s why the stadium will be empty. Most fans will fly to a bowl game, but not to a CCG, especially with a trip to the Orange Bowl possible 3 weeks later. Tampa would only work if it was FSU vs Miami.
As much as I hate it, Charlotte is the most logical location for the ACCCG.

Scoreboard. 6-4. That’s all that needs to be said. In head to head matchups the ACC is up 6-4. And of the 3 losses, 2 were to UF (which I hate), and 1 to Alabama.

King Bee,
Upon what georgia tech algorithm or advanced mathematics do you base the idea that bama is the most overrated #1 EVER? Surely you have some facts on your side. Considering that there have been numerous #1s over time that had at least 1 loss and sometimes 2 losses like LSU last year I find your comment that an undefeated 12-0 Alabama team is the most overrated #1 of all time to be laughable. Son, you just aint too bright.

I think any logical dawg fan can admit that the SEC was most definitely down this year- hence all the coaching changes. The numbers don’t lie- the ACC had the better year this year. Let’s just accept that. We had a rough year…dawgs included…but if our rough year means we go 9-3 I’m okay with that.

December 5, 2008 3:05 PM | Link to this
Na. georgia nole,
Stats can often be misleading and you can always twist stats to bolster your argument as you just did.
First of all the ACC did in fact win head to head 6-4. But the season isn’t done yet. We still have the bowls to go so the yearly head to head is not officially decided yet.
Secondly, the ACC won a series of close games against some of the traditional doormats of the sec:2 wins against Vandy, 1 over Miss. State, a terrible pass interference call that basically handed Wake a win over Ole Miss early in the season, and a close win over UGA.
Thirdly, of course when you played the big boys like Fla. and bama you got absolutely pounded in 3 blowouts. I would be willing to wager that the point differential in the sec’s 4 wins far exceeds the point differential in the ACC’s 6 wins. So if you really want to look a little more indepth look as to what really happened you’ll see that the SEC without a doubt dominated the games statistically. You just got lucky in a few close games.
Lastly, you are a collection of average and in some cases a little better than average teams. You don’t have superpower teams like Bama and Fla. which happen to be ranked NO. 1 and 2 in the AP. Do ya actually believe a program like Wake could win the SEC like they did the ACC 2 years ago? Come on.
Just look at the title games and that will tell you everything you need to know. Every single freaking year the ACC title game has craploads of empty seats and its been that way every since the inception. Meanwhile the SECCG is the hottest ticket Atlanta may have ever seen. The crappiest tickets in the nosebleeds are going for $400 a pop. But that leaves one great advantage of being an ACC fan. You have the privilege of walking up to the ticket window at your title game and buying a ticket or 2 or 12,000 as of this morning to see Boston College play Va Tech. I know that Bama has 12 ncs and Fla. has 2 but has BC or VA. Tech ever won a national title? Didn’t think so. No wonder nobody gives a dam# about your title game.

I am so over people screaming “Who has Alabama played???” Let’s see…Clemson was #10 in the country when we beat them. Georgia was #2. LSU may suck this year, but they were #15 when we beat them, not too shabby. Is it really Bama’s fault that Clemson, Georgia, LSU, Tennessee and Auburn had bad years? We have played many teams that Florida has played being in the same conference. Maybe not by as many points, but we sure got the W. Like it or not, we beat Ole Miss, a good team that beat the mighty Gators in The Swamp, no less. Florida has not played a defense like Bama’s this year. Call us underdogs, we are used to it this year and we are undefeated sitting pretty at #1 in the AP, Harris and BCS polls. Most are counting Bama out and I hope Florida goes in thinking they have this game won. They will be expecting a cake walk but they are gonna get a fist fight. And Nick Saban will have them ready. It will be a heck of a game but realistically speaking, no one thought Bama would be here. And win or lose, we are absolutely beside ourselves with pride in the boys on our team. They have outdone all expectations in them this year and we are proud to represent in the SECCG. Roll Tide!!

Jeff,
My feeling on the Falcons is that they will lose to the Saints with the game in New Orleans.
However, the Falcons should win the next three games. They will be playing Tampa at home after the Bucs’ physical Monday night game against Carolina, then the Vikings who likely will be w/o the Williams, then the Rams…putting the Falcons in the playoffs at 11-5.

You’re right, Jeff. I can’t believe the poor, little ACC can even afford to have a CCG. Oh yeah, I forgot; the ACC athletic programs miraculously manage to bring in big dollars every year. In fact, North Carolina for sure, and possibly Virginia, brought in more money than any SEC program last year. Who would have thought there would be so much money in basketball? Well, GT, FSU, Miami, BC, and VT apparently did! SEC Fan - One last thing - Wake was a 500 team in the ACC. They beat Ole Miss, who beat Florida and gave Alabama all they wanted (talk about a questionable pass interference call!) Does that mean Wake would have won the SEC championship this year. Of course not. I just wanted to show how ridiculous your analysis of the conference match-ups is. The ACC has no team the same caliber as UF or Bama this year, but all you need to know is that there are 4 SEC teams ranked below the ACC’s lowest rated team (Duke) at season’s end. The SEC has two great teams and not much else. The ACC has a lot of good teams as the SEC found out this year.

Bill,
Let’s just see: Florida wins…
Hawaii (unranked) Miami (unranked) Tennessee (unranked by this time, preseason 18) LOST at home to Ole Miss (unranked) Arkansas (unranked) LSU (then ranked #4) Kentucky (unranked) Georgia (then ranked #6, preseason #1) Vanderbilt (unranked by this time) South Carolina (then ranked #25) The Citadel (yeah, right…) Florida State (then ranked #20)
…and this is Alabama:
Clemson (then ranked #9) Tulane (unranked) Western Kentucky (unranked) Arkansas (unranked) Georgia (then ranked #3) Kentucky (unranked but undefeated at this point) Ole Miss (unranked but got the W in Florida) Tennessee (way unranked by this time) Arkansas State (ok, cupcake game for HC but a team that hung 88 points on one of its own opponents) LSU (ranked $16 at this point) Mississippi (unranked) Auburn (unranked at this time but preseason top 10)
So that 401K might not be worth so much now but it ain’t looking too bad I don’t guess. Good luck to the Jackets, they are my team away from my team. THWG

UGA fans are just stupid, you guys just lost the Georgia State title and in a week you forgot how bad Tech whipped you.
Next season CPJ will have the players he selected to execute the Triple Option.
Richt is defining insanity, doing the same things with the same inept staff will NOT yield a different result.

To UGA, AUBURN, TENN, & Clemson and who do you think is a better caoch you can get? UGA fans call for the Coaches Head but who will be better? 7 home games and just win those and a road game here and there and be happy. 119 teams fighting for 1 national championship and that is a TALL ORDER. I want to enjoy the game with a win at home and hope to be treated well by the other teams fans when we are on the road.

Hey Pencil Jockey,
If Tubbs was ran out of Auburn, then why is he staying there for another year and why is all of his assistant’s still recruiting? What do you really know about the situation? NOTHING.
Just stick to your crackhead predictions and write for the people who you represent the best..the geeks from North Ave. (OH.. heard that Paul Johnson is a top candidate AU’s head coaching job)

Just saw a camera scan the fans at the ACC Championship game in TAMPA….the ACC fans don’t travel to Tampa to well do they? There might be 20,000 fans there at most. Roll Tide and as far as the UF clown asking “how long has it BEEN since UGA won a National Championship?’ I ask you, “how LONG did it take the Gaytors to win just an SEC Championship”? Again….Roll Tide!

Didn’t scroll through to see if this was already noted, but the Aints won’t be without any of those ‘suspended’ players. A federal judge in Minnesota placed an injunction barring the suspensions of the seven players that tested positive for a diuretic after taking StarCaps. Looks like we’ll have to beat’em straight up!

Falcons win. Too much depth. They hurt you everywhere on the field from the red zone to the dead zone, in spite of dropped passes or dropped calls.
Falcons will go the, the. the: the; the! the? the-playoffs.
Gentlemen, light your bong hats, and fill up that superbowl. (how much is this stuff a pound, man?)
Didn’t you hate that? Remember in the seventies whenever there was a impromptu pot party, and 15 people would sit in a co-ed circle, passing a bong around, and some idiot would always ask, “What kind of pot is this?”. The host would always say, “Columbian”. Then, the follow up question, after a very pregnant pause, (during which many co-eds got pawed and pregnant), would be, “How much is this stuff a pound, man”.
Like this idiot was all of a sudden a dealer, with cash to get the best price for his customers.
I hated the seventies, man.

To: Falcons Will Lose Against Saints,
I agree…it is a lock that the Falcons will lose today and it has nothing to do with the Hawks performance. Brees and Co are outstanding at home.
However, as I stated before, the Falcons will win the next three…11-5 and the playoffs!!! Who would have thought?
