Tech-Georgia rivalry is reborn

Athens — Time had elapsed, the sideline hedges were shrinking by the handfuls, and “To Hell With Georgia!” was still echoing in the craniums of numbed and stupefied Bulldogs fans when Dan Radakovich and Paul Johnson embraced on the field.

“We had them all the way,” said Johnson, smiling. And if that was meant even slightly as tongue-in-cheek, maybe it shouldn’t have been.

One game does not balance the scales in a rivalry. But Georgia Tech could not have made a louder or more impactful statement than it did Saturday about its program, both present day and future. Think of a giant footprint coming down and leaving a deep imprint smack on the “G” at Sanford Stadium.

Tech players jumped up and down at midfield following warm-ups, nearly inciting a pre-game brawl with Georgia players who were doing the same inches away. They jumped up and down after scoring 23 points in the first seven minutes of the second half, while Willie Martinez stared on like a wildebeest. They jumped up and down when it was over and the scoreboard read, 45-42, ending a seven-year streak of misery.

It was one win — much in the same way Mt. Vesuvius had that one eruption.

“This game is going to change everything,” Jackets running back Jonathan Dwyer said. “The way people look at us. The way people have to respect us now. The way we’re going to have a bigger winning record than we’ve had in a while. People can’t ignore us any more. This is how we play. This is who we are.”

When Radakovich hired Johnson last December, he wanted a coach who could create some excitement and energize a fan base that had become jaded under Chan Gailey. He wanted to raise the stature of a program that felt dwarfed and humbled by the relative Godzilla in Athens.

“I think we did that,” Radakovich said. He motioned to a Tech cheering section and the band playing at the other end of the stadium and added, “Look at all the folks up there. And there’s thousands of Tech alumni in their room right now just having a blast.”

Johnson did this with a lot of players he didn’t recruit. He did this with players meant to play in a different offense. He did this with a program that had gone 0-6 in this rivalry under Gailey — sometimes ugly (51-7), sometimes close (15-12), but never with a sense of belonging on the same field.

What was it Johnson said earlier in the week? “We’re not afraid. I’m not afraid. What’s the worst thing that can happen. We can lose? We’ve done that.”

Not often. The Jackets are now 9-3 and rising. They look hungry and passionate and well-coached. The other team on the field Saturday also is 9-3 — but they look shut out in those three areas.

Dwyer (144) and Roddy Jones (214) combined for 358 of Tech’s 409 rushing yards and four touchdowns. The Jackets trailed, 28-12, before scoring touchdowns on their first three possessions of the second half — two coming on one-play drives.

“You can’t do that with this offense — it’s three yards and a cloud of dust, right?” Johnson said, his words dripping with sarcasm.

Georgia and its maligned defensive coordinator, Martinez, had two weeks to prepare. But the triple-option offense made them look like 6-year-olds trying to find the magician’s disappearing rabbit.

This game was a defining moment — both for what Georgia has been this year and what Tech may be from now on. Players broke off pieces of hedges when it was over. Some waved the twigs to fans. Some walked with them in their teeth, as if attitude-dancing with long-stemmed roses.

Did Johnson grab any of the hedge?

“Naw — I figure I’ll be back,” he said. “I mean, act like you think you’re gonna win, right?”

If words were a gauntlet.

Virginia Tech won its game to clinch the ACC Coastal Division over the Jackets.

How often does losing a slot in a conference title game seem like an afterthought?

“That would’ve been the icing on the cake,” Jones said. “But without the icing, the cake’s still pretty good.”

A rivalry is reborn.

I complained about Mark Bradley’s column, wondering why he didn’t write something positive about Tech rather than negative about UGA. Now I understand. You guys check with each other before you write your columns. Like the triple option, if everyone does their job things work out well.

You got it. A rivalry is reborn. 7 straight by either team is probably a thing of the past, as long as CPJ and CMR roam the sidelines. For now, us Tech folks will just sit and enjoy this win.

Good column and kudos for picking Tech to win the game. Fun to watch to talented teams play….hope for many games like this in the future. CPJ showed the type of leadership this year that UGA coaches could not for whatever reason. For the record, UGA has not beaten any team that is TOP 25. Tech beat both SEC opponents this year including the mighty preseason #1 Bulldogs. Should dispel myths about how superior the SEC is, how tough UGA’s schedule is, and finally how much better they are than GT. THWG!!!!!!

NOW, because of this win, he’ll HAVE to wear a TECH hat for the month of dec.! Bet, for the first time in eight years, he’ll be smarter for it! This win will help bring back the rivalry! GO TECH!

Jeff, this was perfect. As a lifelong GT fan, I’m not naive enough to think that we’re going to do this every year, but for the first time since O’Leary left, I feel like we might have a chance every year.

Now, I can look forward to the Thanksgiving game again…

I remember when Paul Johnson was at Georgia Southern he was asked what his offensive game plan was before a game. “Were gonna run the ball, see if you can stop us,” he said. He should be coach of the year! Looks like that extra week of practice really helped the dogs.

I’ll bet all you dawg fans were starting your celebration parties at half time. Looks like the coaches on the Tech sideline are a little better at making adjustments than the overrated coaching staff in Athens. CPJ knows what he’s doing. 45 points on the pre-season #1 team in the nation (even the uga faithful can admit that was a joke). And CPJ doesn’t even have the right players to run the offense yet.

I have to give major credit to Tech’s banged up O-line and to the hobbled Josh Nesbit for the incredible performance they gave. Get used to it people because you’ll be seeing Dwyer and Jones running down the field next year at Bobby Dodd. The rivalry is back on, and Tech’s just started a streak of their own.

I am a new tech fan, call me a bandwagon fan or whatever. But I want to cheer for a team with good coaching and players with heart. Think about it, if the score was reversed at half time, would ugaG come back and win? NO, cause they are not well coached and have no desire nor discipline. This team and coaching staff is the joke of the NCAA, ugaG fans (not me anymore) talk trash, you just had your man card pulled. Go Jacket! That sounded good.

As rewarding as knocking off the cow-college is, it was a helluva game. Aside from cheering (praying/hoping) I did nothing to contribute to the outcome. However, I will wryfully smile (with an understated “aw, shucks …”) Monday morning at the office, bottom of the foodchain no longer. Lovin’ the Fuzzy Bees. Bring on the roundballers.

even a broken clock is right twice a day. occasionally a blind squirrel finds a nut.

UGA will be back and with a vengeance. this was a blip on the radar for us. enjoy it while you can because we won’t sleep until we’ve once again dominated you.

and if you want to talk schedules, then look at who we played and what they were ranked when we played them. look at the acc as a whole. no team with fewer than 3 losses. if you’re hanging your hat on your superior league, then the hat’s going to the ground.

It would mean more for Tech if Georgia had actually tried on defense. That was just a pathetic showing by the Bulldogs. If Willie Martinez is allowed to keep his job then UGA might be looking at a streak of losing to Tech. Martinez had no clue how to stop the option and has never had any idea how to coach a disciplined defense. The man is inept as they come. Maybe in the future Tech beats a Georgia team that actually shows up on both sides of the ball.

“Rivalry is reborn”

Enjoy your victory NATS.

But be careful. Don’t get too far ahead of yourselves quite yet, Techies. Take it from UGA fans after last year’s win at Florida. One win does not necessarily equal a series turnaround.

Great win. Now we just need Paul Johnson to teach Paul Hewitt how to run an offense. Hewitt looks as clueless as Willie Martinez on the sideline watching his team try and and beat power houses like Mercer and Jacksonville. Hopefully DRad can make a change there and energize the fan base and make basketball fun again also.

Very nice win for Tech.

I’ll agree with some of the Georgia fans that their coaches may not be world beaters, but give some credit to the Tech players and coaches. Coach Paul Johnson is a really good coach who has a major chip on his shoulder. Dude IS tough and coaches his players to be tough.

Nesbitt, Dwyer, Jones, and D. Thomas are great athletes and they’d be great players in any system.

As for all the calls to fire the dogs D coordinator, he didn’t cost you the game. The pick 6 thrown by Stafford and the fumble on the kickoff were the deciding factors.

Win streaks always go in cycles, just like when Dooley was coaching. He won a bunch in a row, then it began to be shorter runs of 3 or 4 games. No matter how good one team is, eventually the other catches up. Now that the coaching is stable at both schools, I don’t expect neither school to have long streaks now.

To all you UGA fans who belittle GT fans and our empty seats at Bobby Dodd, what do you have to say for yourselves after your lowsy show of support today in Athens? I was there and I saw just as many empty seats as I’ve seen at Tech games, and ZERO EMOTION from the fans that were there. The only time you’re “SEC crowd” got into it was after the last UGA touchdown. Your home crowd was weak at best, even considering the countless honors and recognition handed out to Dooley, Munson, and 2 biomolecular geeks.(and you call us nerds) Seriously, I thought they were gonna break out Herschel or one of his personalities in the 2nd half. You beat the “in honor of” horse to death, and still came out with an L. So before you go pointing fingers about our “Joke by the Coke”, you need to assess your own situation first. Maybe you just expected to win since you all think you’re entitled to a National Championship. Today you were crowned National Chumps and the state championship now resides at Bobby Dodd. And oh yeah, there’s a new sheriff in town named Paul Johnson. He’s 1-0 against the Dawgs and that mighty SEC is 4-6 against the “inferior” ACC. Chew on that mutts!!

Yeah, the offense is effective. But that’s not the 1986 Bears defense they just shredded. 7-5 LSU did essentially the same thing with a more conventional scheme. This game was more about Georgia’s defense — which did against Tech exactly what it did against all the other good teams it played — than anything the Jackets did.

If you’d have said before the season that UGA would have a 3,000-yard passer and a 1,300-yard runner, I — and I suspect most other observers — would have predicted much better than 9-3. That defense is historically bad.

Dude, please tone down the hyperbole…”a defining moment” and “a rivalry reborn?”

Tech won by 3 points against a team that you, week after week, have written about as unmotivated, poorly-coached, over-rated, poor-performers, undisciplined, etc.

So tell me genius, how is a win against such a terrible Georgia team a defining moment for Tech?

Paul Johnson, for at least one offseason you’re going to be considered a genius.

Tech gave us a feel good story this year while the overrated Dawgs showed no heart. I love Mark Richt, but DC Willie has to lose his job. I don’t care if he’s your friend Mark, you have to do what’s best for the team and the school.

Great, great win for Georgia Tech! One of Paul Johnson’s biggest accomplishments is getting his players to play for 60 minutes every game. I do wish the incredibly biased AJC would focus more on what Tech did right than on what Georgia did wrong. I have lived all over this country and I have never seen a newspaper so much of a cheerleader for a team not even based in its city. Go, Jackets!

I’m just glad I was there to see it happen. I said a small prayer (one of the most sincere in my lifetime, and I spent a year in Iraq if that tells you anything) near the end of the FSU game and the good Lord answered with a fumble. I once again asked the Man for a gift today as my wife and I sat in the steady rain and once again, as he’s done my entire life… he answered. What does this prove? That I am selfish, and I probably need to pray more for stuff that matters, but that being said.. it proves that football is important and that God loves the yellow jackets! GO TECH!

I want to thank the players and coaches at the University of Georgia. They swallowed hard and let Tech beat them. That’s the only excuse I can see for this victory. We read on the AJC blogs all week long how Tech lost to a bad VaTech team, should have lost to FSU, and overpowered an overrated “the U” team. Of course, who can forget needing to block a field goal attempt by weak sista Gardner-Webb. Georgia Tech certainly did not belong on the same field as the 9-2 Georgia Bulldogs. However, I see now that Georgia knew it was ranked number 11, and on the bubble for some BCS stuff. It certainly would be embarassing for Georgia to lose to some really good team, like say a Utah, Texas Tech, Boise State, or Ohio State. It was better to plan a loss against Tech, allowing them to go to a lesser bowl, where they could beat someone up on the likes of a Northwestern or Pitt. They showed they had what it took to beat Tech, getting up by 16 by halftime. Then they took a dive. So gentlemanly of them. It is so nice to know the folks at UGA have some class after all.

Ok, I’m that very rare “homer” that loves all ga. teams, so i dont have a dog(no pun intended) in this fight. However, knew when Ga.Tech hired CPJ, things would forever be different. He is a true ball coach. Mark Richt had the best talent we’ve seen in years, yet continues to under perform….My friends, at best he is a very fine off. coor. he is not a head coach…. lack of discipline is always the first sign that the leader has no control over the product he provides…Need a better HC…

After every UGA loss, their fans prove over and over why it is so easy to despise their program. It’s not just Tech, it’s every other team they play and around the nation. Ask any body that is not a UGA fan why they don’t like them and it’s the same answers; “I can’t stand them because their fans make it easy to hate them”. UGA fans can not give credit when it’s due. When they win, every team they beat is a great team. When they loose, yea, we all know that answer! Others have already said Tech was just lucky. Some have said so what Tech, you didn’t beat a very good team. These are the same that would have been screaming we’re 10-2 and should be going to Atl. had they beat Tech! So transparent, so hilarious, so ridiculous! Fact is, there is a new coach and a new faith that we are in the football business again. 45-42! THWG!!!!!! Again, we all know Johnson’s offense is worthless “at this level”. Writers have writ it, and editors have confirmed it — with apologies to a Civil War soldier — so it must be so. 2) am I the only one astounded at how bad the Georgia coaches got in just one season? It must be so, because the Ga. bloggers say so. Is it just possible that Tech’s coaches, and players, simply had the better game? 3) am I the only Tech fan to wonder what adjustments Tech made at halftime to beat the bejabbers out of Georgia’s defense, one that had hammered them relentlessly for 30 minutes? You think maybe an AJC beat writer or columnists would ask and tell us? Or don’t they do that any more? It used to be called reporting. I’m just curious., and newspapers used to fill that function.

Regardless, come Jan. 20 I will again fly the American flag aftger 8 years in the closet, and match up on the other side of the house with a Georgia Tech flag. Pride is back, and life is good.

I have been telling folks all year that Georgia and the SEC in particular was an over rated conference, sans Florida and Alabama. The win over the wimps from Hawaii last year was an abberation and the three losses that Georgia incurred this season were the “real” Georgia, not the preseason hype.

Also, give kudos to the much maligned ACC! This conference has been slammed as being weak, but look at the records, 3-1 yesterday versus the SEC and a overall winners in head to head matchups. These teams were so close in parity that they beat up on each other from week to week. This conference doesn’t look so sorry now does it!

well, one more possession and I would have hit my prediction right on the head. 49-45 an ARENA League game thanks to soft WM.

I predict that this year’s UGA team will end the year at 9-4 and be compared to 2003 Auburn. Preseason #1 ranking but not enough D to back it up.

If Stafford and Moreno stay, we will be back with a “sting” of our own. Richt has a tough decision coming regarding the DC. He is loyal to a fault and probably great to work for but results are results and a change needs to be made.

I have been watching this game since the 50’s and when Georgia gets beat they always go out and recruit better players and Tech is stuck with the same old problem of being selective on who they can get. If I were a UGA fan I would be very concerned because they can’t recruit much better than they have in the last 5 years. CPJ offense is a great neutralizer of the other teams talent. Tech has a bright future.

Congratulations to y’all Jacket fans and alumni. It was a hell of a game. As a Georgia fan, I am pretty p** at the performance the defense put up, but hey, what can you do, no one’s perfect. Tech came in and did what they did best, stayed disciplined and stuck to their game plan, like they have all year long. This will intensify the rivalry, and make things a heck of a lot better. By no means am I happy for the freaking loss, but maybe this will open some obnoxious Georgia fans eyes, and realize we can’t just slide by every team anymore, and that we don’t walk on water. Paul Johnson is a class act, a tough old school, hard nose coach, that will get it done. Maybe the coaches at Georgia will take this, and dig in as well. It’s gonna be a long year of trash talking, especially living with two Tech grads, but there’s always next year to bring the bite to Atlanta. See you in Atlanta next year Jacket fans.

How quickly they turn. The criticism of Coach Richt for being too nice posted on many of the UGA blog sites is very humorous to me. Perhaps this year there will be a decline in the number of local magazine covers featuring Richt and his strong ethics and Christian principles. In reality, people don’t care about those things, just win as many football games as you should. Don’t meet expectations and the truth comes out real quick. The reality is that UGA fans bought in to the pre-season hype about a championship and the praise showered on the incoming recruits by Scouts and Rivals. However, those things don’t mean one iota on the playing field. After the South Carolina game, a game UGA should have lost, UGA folks should have been smart enough to realize that the hype didn’t add up. UGA is an average team which is fortunate to have only three marks in the loss column. An “atta boy” goes to Tech for not accepting mediocrity and making the moves, as difficult as they may have been, to breathe some life back into this program.

To all of you TECH fans saying you won with Fresh and Sophomores….

What do you think GEORGIA is? Outside of MOMASS and ELLERBE (seniors) and Stafford (Jr) everybody on Georgia’s team is Fresh, RS Fresh, and Sophomores

Also, I have TECH friends (who are high school coaches) who believe that TECH will take a step back when they start getting “Johnson’s type players”

The reason for this is, the athletes he has running his system NOW will no longer come to TECH because of the system…so he will have to look for “SYSTEM” players from high school who are not the same caliber athletes he has now!

Paul Johnson wants to recruit the same type of players he had at NAVY to run his system…those will be the type of players he gets

Pure elation. Congratulations to the Tech players and the coaching staff.

Let’s not slam Chan Gailey anymore. He’s a good man, and let’s not forget that he recruited these players. I know he is happy to see these kids beat Georgia.

Paul Johnson, great job. I would love to shake your hand. I grew up in Georgia, and I more or less rooted for both UGA and Tech because I thought it was stupid to root against the other team. There are classy fans on both sides, but there are many more obnoxious UGA fans that are trashy, “root for the opposing team’s players to get hurt” type of fans.” I couldn’t stand it. After buying season tickets to Tech a few years back and seeing UGA beat Tech so many years straight I am elated after this win. Maybe this will shut the obnoxious UGA fans up for a day or so. Kudos also to Stafford, MoMass, Green and Moreno. Your offense is really something, and you can’t fault these guys for anything yesterday. Way to go Tech, this victory made this Thanksgiving extra special.

First off, Coach Smith, the truth about college football is that with the 85 scholarship limit there is enough talent to go around - look at Texas Tech. There will be plenty of big time talent that want to come play for Paul Johnson. And while UGA has plenty of underclassmen playing, you will be losing some pretty big talents (if Stafford and Moreno go). But UGA will still be pretty good.

I love reading and hearing from the UGA fans. There seems to be 3 kinds of you.

For jarrodmon, deanwallace and you other puppies who think this is the once in a decade blip, much to m’s delight Chan Gailey is no longer our coach. O”Leary won 3 of the last 4 he coached, then Chan came in to give you guys 6 in a row. I’m not saying we will win 6 in a row but as CPJ said, we aren’t scared. He expects to win every game we play and it’s going to be an even fight from now on.

Then there are you UGA fans that think you need to make coaching changes. Look, this was a great game from 2 pretty good teams, both finishing 9-3. UGA’s defense struggled this year with the loss of some linemen, but they are still very talented. But CPJ’s offense has a way of putting up some numbers against pretty good defenses. Puppies, you’ve won 9 or more games, what, 6 years in a row. You have a great coach and a solid program. It’s just that we now have a great coach as well.

And then there are the realistic UGA fans that know that their team was a little overrated, and that you lost a bunch of players to injury(especially linemen - just ask Clemson about losing a bunch of linemen). And you realize that Tech was a little underrated. You also realize that we now have a football coach at the Flats and indeed, the rivalry is now on again.

I look forward to both teams being ranked highly next year and another hard fought contest at then end of 2009.

The ACC bounced back nicely this year. While we clearly don’t have anybody (remotely) close to Florida or Alabama, I’d say the rest of our league matches up quite nicely with the SEC. How the mighty have fallen. And here’s hoping Tuberville leaves Auburn for Clemson. He was great at AU but he’s met his match in Saban.

Congrats to a very well-coached, well-disciplined Tech team. CPJ more than deserves Coach of the Year honors. You guys are lucky to have him.

As for the game, we definitely were not ready to play defensively, even with the two weeks preparation time. I know how wonderful it is to get the monkey off your back, as we have that similar thing with Florida. As much as it pains this alum to say, we were beaten by the better team. I don’t appreciate the ripping of the hedges, but I can understand the excitement. I apologize on behalf of whoever wished Josh Nesbitt a harmful injury. I wish that there were more respectful fans on both sides of the rivalry. I am an alum, who despises everything redneck, and after what happened at Wal-Mart on Friday, you can be rest assured that I will boycott that establishment for the rest of my life (I shop at Target anyway).

As to the future, who knows? I feel like we’ll be starting over from square one. Maybe a few years of rebuilding would be the best thing for us. Clean house and start all over again, fresh and brand new. I’ll still be rooting with my red and black, but I’m not going to believe anything in print before I see it on the field.

I was at the game sitting next to the Tech band. A UGA fan, when seeing the band, raised both hands in the air and gave the band the finger with both hands. He kept doing it over and over. I waited for someone to stop him. All the red and black fans just sat there and watched him. I was sitting with my 12 year old daughter. She said, “did you see that?” I got up and went down to where he was sitting. I told him “I have a 12 year old daughter sitting up here. You will quit doing that or I will call security and have you removed from the game.” He saluted me sarcastically. I went back to my seat. My daughter said he did it again to my back, but he never did it again. I went to a gate manager and told him what happened. He asked me where the man was sitting. I said, I am not going to say unless he does it again. The manager said he would tell the man to stop and if he didn’t he would get security. There is a jackass at every game on every side, but the UGA fans, at least one mature one, should have told him to stop. I’m not condemning all UGA fans, but if you ever see that at Grant Field I hope you will at least go to the stand manager about it.

Just as I did exiting the stadium, I sit here and smile and the overflowing optimism coming from Tech fans. Good for you, you’re a big boy now. I guess I might celebrate too if I had just broke a 7 year losing streak. The reality is that this game was tailor made for Tech to win. While I wish the dawgs would have dug deep to win for the seniors, there was nothing on the line— no conference standing, no bowl upgrade, or even a bitter rivalry. Tech, as we know, made this out to be their super bowl. Winning football games has a lot to do with who is hungrier, which is largely why Tech now— that and the same old issues UGA has had all year. But I would recommend that Tech players, coaches, and fans not make such grand statements as “this game changes everything.” I seem to remember both Lou Holtz and Steve Spurrier saying that after rare wins over UGA. Remind me, how has that worked out for those legendary coaches?

Finally, this game was not surprising from and X and O standpoint. Everyone knew and predicted we would have a hard time stopping their run. We’ve struggled with everyone else’s running game as well. Ironically, what was most surprising was that UGA had such a HUGE offensive performance of their own against what we heard was a superior Tech defense. This was just a shootout. Last team with ball was going to win.

Congrats, Tech fans… but at the end of the day, the outcome of game didn’t mean that much, which is why I just smile and watch your over-the-top celebration. We’re so proud that you’ve now learned to walk. Maybe next you’ll be able to eat solid foods.

To the Jacket fans - woot!!!! It’s just going to keep getting better. This game alone should greatly help recruiting. The Ramblin Wreck is the YOUNGEST ACC team and is going to return most of its offense. While I am very worried about our secondary (even before this game), I have every bit of confidence in CPJ, my COY, and his tremendous staff. CCG was a good coach and a great man with limited expectations. He never truly thought he could beat UGA and thus did not. CPJ is a great coach and a great man with unlimited expectations. He expects to win every game he plays. And he is disciplined as is his team. CPJ happens to run the triple option. He could win running any style offense. Bottom line, winners win.

Thanks for the concern about the GT fan base’s development, however, in case you haven’t heard GT has a more storied history in college football than does UGA. I know 90% of the homers in this state “believe” UGA is an elite program year-in and year-out and who wouldn’t with all the unbiased coverage they get. But in reality, UGA has not won a NC in 28-years and before CMR led UGA to an SEC championship in 2002, UGA hadn’t won a SEC championship outright in 20-years.

So take it from me, I sit back every year and smile at the delusion that comes from the UGA fan base. You guys are suckers for the UGA marketing ploy and herded around like dumb sheep. Just follow the red-and-black sheep in front of you and you will be fine.

As a Navy fan, and new Tech fan when Johnson was hired, I came on this site when Johnson was hired at Tech and made comment after comment about what a difference Johnson would make based on the success he had at Navy. He took Div 1-AA and Div 2 talent and went to bowls and beat some bigtime programs. Now he’s at an ACC team that can attract legit Div 1 talent and he keeps rolling on.

I wasn’t disappointed when he left Navy because I understood why he left. Now he has the chance to win a national championship and show he knows what he’s doing. Just wait until he gets Tech full of players he recruited. The sky is the limit.

That explosion of points in the 3rd quarter was no fluke. The man can coach and make in game adjustments and I watched him do just that for 6 years in Annapolis. Now you folk down in Georgia understand. Enjoy

Did you really just play the history card? Please. UGA owns the head-to-head series 59-40 and has had much more success in the last decade on a conference and national level. Look, who really cares about so-called elite status, anyway. It’s all about what you do year end and year out, and there aren’t but a few teams who have matched UGA’s body of work over the last 8 years. I can promise you this— you would have a hard time finding anyone to agree that Tech’s overall program is on the same level as UGA— anyone other than a Tech fan, that is. One 3-pt win in 8 years does not elevate you as much as you think it dies. To earn respect, you have to have success on a consistent basis. Win a couple of conference championships and then you make a case. Until, Tech fans, quit guaranteeing future success and just wait and see what happens.

I think understanding the outcome of the UGA-GT football rivalry is simple- in my lifetime it has been a story of coaching matchups:

Dodd vs Butts Dooley vs many Ross vs Goff Goff vs Lewis O’Leary vs Donnan Richt vs Gailey Johnson vs Richt

I don’t need to tell any Tech or Dawg fan who was the winner in each of these matchups. This final pairing listed here could last a while, and hopefully develop a rivalry in the true sense one thinks of the word.

first off as a uga fan i would like to congratulate tech and their fans for the win. the better TEAM won the game and they deserved to win. they had every right to throw in the towel at halftime and chalk up another victory to the dawgs. however, they showed that they are a team with a lot of heart. i told most dawg fans before the game that tech wanted it more and played with more heart than we do. it’s was obvious that is the case and i give their players and coaches all the credit. uga hasn’t shown any intensity or heart all year and in the 3 games they played against good teams this year we all know the outcomes. so again i congratulate tech and i hope we can make some needed changes going forward.

I love the reference to that abstract definition of a “storied” program. There is no single formula of what that really is. I’ll take head to head any day. Plus, in one breath you talk about UGA living in the past, and the next you talk about wanting to commpare who has a more storied program. Looks like you have as much of a problem being consistent as Tech’s football program has had over the last 25 years. Again, show us some consistent top-10 football over the next 5 years, like UGA has, and you will get your props. Until then, just enjoy the win. My gosh, Tech fans, I have no problem admitting you won and living with it. I think it’s the fact that I (and so many other UGA fans) have gotten over it so fast that is bothering you the most. Your sting just doesn’t hurt that much. There just isn’t that much to rub in. Deal with it.

Georgia scored the points but couldn’t play defense.

Coach Richt, there’s no bad soldiers, just bad officers.

You gotta figure it out man.

What’s crazy is that 9-4 or 10-3 is not a bad season, but the teams UGA beat this year were a lower division or a lesser opponent and LSU and Auburn were worse than Georgia.

Georgia’s TOP of the BOTTOM and BOTTOM of the TOP which translates in meaning to AVERAGE.

I would like to shout out to a few people:

Jaybo Shaw- Way to come in for Josh and move the chains to set up our touchdown. You didn’t let those 90thousand + screaming fans get in your head

Josh Nesbitt- Way to come back in after getting hurt, and leading your team to a clutch touchdown!!!

GT Offensive Line- You’ve been banged up all year but still came out strong, even without key starters and played your asses off.

GT Defense- Very young, could’ve made some plays, but overall, you forced punts when we needed them, and 42 points sure is a lot…but last I checked it beats 45.

Great game to all Georgia Tech Football Players. and Great job Paul Johnson for making these boys tough and ready to come out and fight is a rough environment. Keep up your coaching, and georgia tech—keep up the heart!!!!!

Dude you really need to fully read a post – no skimming. I didn’t at all talk about UGA living in the past. I stated that on a yearly basis, UGA fans believe their team to be in the elite of college football teams and then I used a historic statement of facts as a reference of why they shouldn’t. I didn’t say the UGA fans live in the past. I said the past doesn’t support the typical yearly outlook of the lunatic fringe (LF) UGA fans. Quite the contrary, I think the LF believes too much in the hype of any upcoming season. I repeat the LF does this, not every UGA fan does this. Based on your post I don’t put in the LF category.

I am the type of fan that thinks the LF on the Tech side need to enter reality also. One game does give the annual bragging rights but it in no way provides the opportunity to begin talk about starting a string of their own against UGA. That does not happen often in the UGA-GT rivalry so I am not sure where they come up with that crap. UGA will be back next year with a more experienced O-line and probably a new defensive coordinator. The DC change probably won’t happen until after signing day so there is no loss of the commitments UGA has received from the defensive players they have recruited. I think the change will occur around Feb. 15,2009. Also, I think MS will return in an effort to improve his game for the next level, but I think KM is gone. I think he takes himself out of games because he is pre-occupied with being hurt and not making it to the next level. CK will fill in nicely for him.

Anyway, you are right UGA hands down has the upside on GT head-to-head. You have to admit though, that since the late 60’s, UGA has benefited from better athletes and coaching than has Tech. Maybe with Johnson, that will change, but it will be a few years before he can fully implement his system.

Lilburn Dawg

Thanks. Believe me, my UGA friends gave me plenty of UGA wear for her and my family is like a lot of Georgia families. Some root for Tech and others for UGA so I am sure she will get the sales pitch from every angle. Truthfully, it wouldn’t bother one-bit for her to attend UGA and be a loyal fan of the Bulldogs so long as she makes the grades for her chosen major.

Like I told smilingdawg, I think CMR will make a DC change after signing day in order to preserve his current commitments. Even though Texas made that Coach of the Future statement about Muschamp, I think it will be Muschamp who is the next DC. He is a UGA product and a Georgia boy and he could be UGA’s Coach of the Future when CMR head out.

Where does Coach Smith coach at? Surely you don’t believe that!! Calvin Johnson was the last 5 star recruit that GT has had….. Tech has a great coach now and UGA got beat by a team with less talent across the board. You have 4 and 5 star recruits at every position on the field and year in and year out its that way. Why dont all of you Ugay fans put a little thought into the bs you spit all of the time? For the talent that you have on the field you should have had three NCs in the last 15 years. Underachievers, plain and simple… TO HELL WITH GEORGIA!!!

Congrats to the Trade School, they certainly played a hell of a game. However, I would hardly call it a “series turnaround” kind of win.

Tech needed an absolutely perfect storm to win by THREE POINTS. Rainy day (perfect for the triple option), 75% full Sanford Stadium, two costly turnovers by UGA, and the worst day of defensive play UGA has had in years.

Enjoy your win, you certainly deserve it (and we all know they are few and far between). But don’t read into it more than you should by calling it a “series changing” THREE POINT victory. Order shall be restored next Thanksgiving.

Congrats Tech.

Where is ACC Sucks??? We have been looking for his post all weekend. I guess he jumped off a bridge after the ACC took out the greatest conference in history of any conference and any sport. I also would guess that he has not sobered yet so he cant spew his garbage over this blog.

Great offensive game Tech. we have a lot of work to do to become a great team. I am confident that CPJ will make our program into what we expect it to be.

After my four years playing on the Flats and never beating UGA I can only say Thank You 2008 Jackets. Please remember that this is only year one and it is time for the CPJ era start its own domination of not only UGA but the whole ACC (The #1) conference in the whole land!

No doubt, this feels great ! I had a good feeling when the rumor of C PJ’s hire began. The Jackets have that “finish the drill ” killer instinct that they have lacked. Interesting the the combined duties of HC & OC seem to be a flawless task. Time & again this season at halftime we have seen adjustments made . This year was the peak for UGA for many years. And yesterday’s game was UGA’s best performance of the season. They are a legitimate 15-20 team.

Also, this was GT’s re-building year, and they just started to show some improvement one week ago. Tech will be much improved in the near and distant future. I see bigger yardage for Tech in the future and I see Tech allowing much fewer passing yards, and touchdowns allowed.

Things look good for Tech.

Great job Tech. I flew 14 hours to watch UM and UGA. Good flight in retrospect! Here’s my response to all your posts:

Things I know:

Georgia Tech is better than UGA this year because they won! There are no “great teams” in the ACC. There are no “bad teams” in the ACC. The ACC was 3-1 against the SEC on Saturday. The ACC has 10 bowl eligible teams. The ACC had 10 teams ranked this year. One that wasn’t will be bowl eligible and beat a ranked team.

Jeff Schultz, these are some things I want to know:

Will GT’s success continue or even build? Is this like a year one for Saban/Meyer or like Willingham/Weiss for CPJ? Will GT have the better team on the field next year if UGA loses their 4 best skill players this year? When was the last time Tech played 5 straight ranked opponents? When was the last time Teach beat ranked opponents in consecutive weeks or 3 of 4?

Bottom line, life is going to get good but hard for Tech. The ACC is one of the best top to bottom conferences in the country. Our opponents will get stronger too.

I knew this would happen…Wah Wah Wah…We won..We are a better team.. We are 2-0 vs SEC this year and hopefully they match us up with another SEC opponent in the bowl game so we can kick the Sh*t out of them too. National Championship huh? All you Ugay fans bought right into that BS…but you can’t even beat a high school offense on your own field…

And i don’t even want to hear the crap about “once in a blue moon”..All that matters is this year beeotchs….YOU LOSE!!

By Pi$$OnYech

November 30, 2008 5:13 PM | Link to this

urinatesondawgs, your team had 42 points hung on them so you really didn’t “kick the SH*t” out of anyone. So you’re 2-0 vs SEC? Check out MSU’s record, clown. Try playing Florida or Alabama and then you can crow about something. Wow, I guess I never really stopped to think how much that must have hurt all of you nerds being DOMINATED for 7 years straight. Now you come from behind (with help from the ref’s and 2 fortunate turnovers) to win a close game against a very poorly coached SEC team and all of a sudden everything is right with the nerd nation. Enjoy it and crow all you want….for now!! I can promise you that UGA will not forget that one. If UGA can somehow jettison their ‘gifted’ DC, Willie Boy, they’ll take you to the woodshed again and start the streak all over. Meanwhile, try to develop some pass defense or you’ll lose your bowl game (again). Oh, and the SEC has two teams in the top 3 since you brought it up, clown. Gee, there are no ACC teams in the top 10 so I must have missed something, clown. Please let me know what you think about that. I know…..they’re cheaters, huh? CLOWN!!!!!

This year - the ACC is 6 and 4 against the SEC, and 5 and 1 outside of the first 2 weeks of the season. Average SEC record of these SEC teams: 5-3 Average ACC record of these ACC teams: 4-4 The decent from the ACC defeated the good from the SEC, on the whole. Pre-season # 1 GA has significantly fewer quality wins the Tech. Beyond all that, we beat UGA @ UGA in UGA’s year. I hope Moreno and Stafford join Massaquoi in leaving for the pro’s, because our freshmen and sophomore QBs and RBs will enjoy a career full of this.

By BullDawg79

Hey Getreal…the Techies are gloating because they proved that we were overrated by beating us. You can dismiss the Tide and Gator losses to vastly superior teams. How do you explain being ahead by 16 on our home field and then lose to a “high school offense”? Tech has fewer blue chip athletes and fewer on scholarship than we do. We should have won going away.

If Johnson uses this season as a springboard to better recruits, we are in trouble with what we have on staff, especially on defense. We used to be able to beat Tech with our superior talent. That is no longer the case

We saw what Tech did to Miami, and yet we could not stop them. We had two weeks to prepare. We had them down at half time and they came out with fire in their belly like we used to have. You can belittle them all you want, but they have arrived. As far as the what if’s, the same apply to the Dawgs. The refs were atrocious in our favor. I saw several non holding calls on our offensive line where they had the jersey in their grasp, pulling on the Tech defender in full view of the ref and no flag.

Tech should be talking trash now, because of our expectations with being pre-season no. 1 and the 7 game streak.

Bottom line: Tech should have beaten us more than they did. We were not prepared, and except for a few fortunate plays for us, the game would have been a blowout.

We need new personnel on defense. NOW!

I agree. All of you have written all year about how mediocre UGA is at best, poorly coached, horrible defense, etc. Why now do you act like this loss is such a big deal? According to you and to the Nerds, they should be playing for the national championship, so a three point win really isn’t that great, now is it?

Will PJ repair their porous pass defense before their bowl game? If not, bank on another 42 points being scored on them!!! Ha haaaaaaaa!!!! We almost won despite two crucial turnovers and having a retard for a DC. Enjoy it now, pvss.

I find it funny that UGA fans talk so much sh*t during the season, how they are THE best team in THE best conference in football. Then they lose, and all of a sudden the excuses start to fly. Face it you douche bags, YOU DID NOT BEAT A SINGLE TEAM IN THE TOP 25!!! Who did you beat? GSU, Central Michigan, South Carolina, Vandy, Kentucky, Auburn, LSU, Arizona State, and Tennessee. Wow, tough schedule! Like I have said to every dog fan I know, YOU WILL NEVER BE CONSIDERED A POWERHOUSE PROGRAM UNTIL YOU DO SOMETHING! Nothing since 1980, nothing at all. You dropped from #1 the first week of the season, and that was after you won. What does that tell you? Yeah, you dogs get all kinds of respect.

Now some of you come on here and say “congratulations Jackets”. What a joke! P** on you and your crappy team. Now go back under your trailers and shut up!!! I hate UGA, and I am going to enjoy this game for a long, long, long time.

GatorSam: nothing to do with spelling my crazed friend, it’s a typo.

I am not an ACC homer or any homer at all. All i am saying is, SEC fans don’t seem to realize this truth: They play great football, but so do the other division one conferences!! SEC fans think football is played nowhere else. They snicker when they hear someone say “Oregon State”, or “Baylor”, not realizing that “Arkansas” and “Mississippi State” sound just as laughable to the people who live in those areas. All the major conferences send players to the pros, not just the SEC. In fact, the ACC, which you so disparage, has sent more the last couple of years than the SEC. If Fla wins the NC this year, that will prove they are the best team, nothing more. When Texas won a few years back, did that make the big 12 the best conference? When SC won, did that make the pac-10 the best conference? No, of course not. Neither does it make the SEC the best if Fla wins. The SEC is like everybody else. 1 or 2 really good teams, and the rest average. Just curious, what is the SEC record against other BCS conferences this year?

By Pi$$OnYech

November 30, 2008 7:41 PM | Link to this

No, Insectinside. It does not hurt at all because I saw it coming. I am NOT a UGA fan and never have been. I am from Alabama and LOVE to see the mutts lose. We whipped those pups very well this year and it felt good. The mutts cannot stop the run and that’s why we beat them; that is why you ACC boys barely got by them. UGA has great players but a sorry bunch of coaches and you know it. UGA got out coached yesterday by a man who really understands the game. Nick Saban understands the game even better than your coach. It’s called take away the run from the opponent and establish your running game. That’s football in a nutshell. You guys did that against UGA and you came out on top but you almost lost because of very bad pass coverage. The only question that remains is what the ACC is going to do about not having any teams in the top ten. Why is that, Insectinside? Please explain why the SEC has two teams in the top 5 and the ACC has NONE in the top 10. Please explain that to me. Thanks.

By GatorSam

Voice of Reason, that really does not address the question at hand. The subject was the ACC versus the SEC as you might recall, my misspelling friend. I would just like to know WHY, WHY, WHY, WHY, WHY the SEC has TWO teams in the top 3 and the ACC has NONE in the top 10 if the ACC is so much better than the SEC (as several posters have suggested). That is the only question that I would like to have answered. Is that asking too much??? While you are sipping on your Diet Dr. Pepper, you might also want to provide an answer to another question. Okay…ready? The Alabama Crimson Tide is undefeated as you may know. Can you name an ACC team that is undefeated??? I rest my case.

GatorSam: Again, typos. i am not a secretary, and don’t care enough about these little missives to be concerened about correcting them. You rest your case on Alabama being undefeated? If anything, that undermines your case as to the ‘Greatness’ of the SEC. There is no debating an SEC fanatic. When SC is undefeated, or has one loss in the pac 10, it is because that conference sucks. So following that logic, why can’t someone else say the SEC sucks when they currently have the exact same situation?

I have never said the ACC is better than the SEC because i don’t think so. I am saying that an upper tier team in any major conference would be an upper tier team in yours. SEC fans seem to think that any of your teams would just waltz through the big 12 or ACC undefeated. I realize from year to year there are differences between conferences, but on average, any of the teams could beat each other.

You have already stated why the ACC has no teams in the top 10. They have no teams with less than 3 losses. Of course, if that were the case in the SEC, it would only prove how great they are, all the teams are tough, man, what a gauntlet, etc. But in the ACC, it proves they suck, right my logic-challenged friend?

Okay guys-

I have decided not to come on here and make fun of the bulldogs for there achievements this year (or lack there of). This is difficult with them peppering tech blogs with “high school offense” jabs and holier than though crap all through 2-a-days and into the season, BUT I am taking the high road.

I also feel a bit sorry for the bulldog nation because I do respect their passion for football and this year was so embarrassing for them. It has got to be depressing to see the beacon of your program (richt) exposed against saban, meyer and now paul johnson. They will bounce back from this debacle but it will take a few years and with kiffin going to UT they will have to fight for the scraps in the SEC east.

For the sad person above (pi$$onyech) who pretends to be a bama fan instead of admitting he is bulldog because he is embarrased by their latest bedwetting, your ploy is sad and juvenille. Come out of the closet, Pi$$onYech…your family will still love you.

GatorSam, since you obviously are a Gator fan, I know that common sense and intelligence are not your strongest assets. So, I am going to make it real simple for you. In head-to-head match ups, the ACC has a WINNING record against your SEC. Pretty simple stuff there. You still with me on this?

OK, now this one is a little tougher, stick with me on this one. Tell me what ranked opponents did Florida and Alabama beat this year? I am going to help you a little on this one. Since both teams played in the SEC, and pretty much played the same schedule, the answer is simple. There were 3 schools from the SEC in the Top 25 in the BCS poll (Alabama, Florida, UGA). You have beat 1, that would be UGA. Alabama has also beat 1, which is also UGA. That is a wash. And don’t even THINK about saying LSU!

GT is 3-1 against ranked opponents this year, and the ACC has 4 teams in the Top 25 of the BCS. Why are they not ranked in the Top 10, ask the pollsters and the computer. The fact of the matter is that this year, the SEC is weak, and the ACC is a better conference. Just because you have the top 2 in the rankings does not mean you have the best conference. Remember 2006? Ohio State was #1 and Michigan was #2. The argument that year was the Big Ten doesn’t play anybody. I think the same argument can be said this year about the SEC.

Now, I rest my case.

Florida lost at home. USC lost on the road. Texas lost on the road. Oklahoma lost at a neutral site.

USC should get the nod over Florida (should Florida beat Bama) for a shot at the NC. It’s that simple.

To have a claim for the right to play for NC you should win all your home games.

Losing at home should be the discriminator when comparing records.

Perhaps the reason Bama and Florida have such lofty records this year is the SEC is so weak.

Did Eric Zier really say the 3-Option is a high school offense? If so, then GA had a middle school defense! Don’t matter, Zier won’t be back, hopefully.

High Road,

Ref: “there of” should be ‘thereof’, Planck.

Ref: “holier than though” should be ‘holier than thou’, Tesla.

Ref: “embarrased” - the word is correctly spelled ‘embarrassed’, Bohr.

Ref: “juvenille” should be ‘juvenile’, Newton.

I can see why you refer to yourself as High Road since you seem to be on a high from smoking a few pocket rockets while driving down the dirt road back to your mammy’s basement bedroom this evening. You should have gone into the local library to learn how to spell (comes from reading a lot) instead of playing several games of Stink Finger with your GT pals. Be gone, geek.

it must have hurt all of you nerd fans to lose so many, many games in a row, huh? that was what - 7 in a row? ouch!!! well, that was before my time and now I am here to stay at uga so I guess the streak has ended all because of me and how i teach my defensive players to cover and tackle. i sure hope cmr never gives me a pink slip; heck, why would he? we’re the best of friends and mark is such a nice, nice, nice guy. yeah, we hang out together and he’s my buddy so I guess i’ll be here for a while. You gt guys need to just throttle back a notch or two because i’d really like to keep this cushy job that I have. please take it easy on uga next year! if not, maybe i’ll be forced to coach at gsu or navy or some other low-life college. thanks!!!

Bowl Game committee selects UGA Despite a dismal loss in the rain to the Yellow Jackets, the season is not over for the Dawgs; as UGA has accepted a bid to play in the inaugural Tucks Medicated Hemorrhoidal Wipes Bowl. The game site has not been chosen, but two likely locations are Parkview High school and Bay Springs Middle school. The game will be shown on a post game basis on ESPN-9, after the Division III championship game; which will be shown live.

Pi$$OnYech: Will PJ repair their porous pass defense before their bowl game? If not, bank on another 42 points being scored on them!!! Ha haaaaaaaa!!!! We almost won despite two crucial turnovers and having a retard for a DC. Who is WE, Mr. I’m-from-Alabama-and-love-to-see-the-mutts-lose? What does who’s in the top 10 have to do with GT’s rivalry with UGA? Given the circumstances, I’m happy as hell to be ranked in the top 20 just because of beating Georgia. If you are a ‘Bama fan, you sure sounded like a leg-humper in your post. Everybody agrees that Bama and UF are good. Next year it may be someone else. The next ranked team from the god-all-powerful SEC is UGA at #17 followed by Ole Miss at 20.

I now have a year supply of medicine for my “small Penis” syndrom. Who care’s about the Championship game, the mean old Bulldogs in Athens actually have noticed us.

I believe the ACC had a winning record against the SEC this year 6 wins against 4 losses.

Also Tech is as high as 15 in one poll and VT is not ranked in any polls and BC is at least two spots behind Tech in all the others. That loss to UVA was a killer.

Tech needs to find help in the secondary and a kicker that can kick the ball into the endzone and make kicks at least 45yds.

Great win building block for the future and recruiting.

You Dawg fans are right. Strings don’t happen very often. And, this past Saturday, UGA lost it’s opportunity to match Tech’s 8 straight.

Tech nows has a Coach and an AD who understands that Tech is competitive and can play with the big boys.

Congrats to Tech on a great win!

But, ‘Rad’ made a brilliant quote, “…there’s thousands of Tech alumni in their room right now just having a blast…” Hmmm. And, dad gum it, yall gave up 42 points. Some coaches heads outa roll at Tech. Just no excuse for giving up that many points against such a sorry team. I don’t know who to blame, the HC or the DC; but one of em needs to fired.

But, I regress. Again, congrats to Tech on the long-awaited win.

You guys can say what you want about Tech giving up the passing yards, but Stafford, Massaquoi and Green are a special bunch. That is what worried me going into the game. To the Dog fans that aren’t throwing a tantrum right now, I feel fortunate that we won, but feel we earned the win for effort, desire and execution by coaches and players. Georgia is still a good team and has had an incredible run so far. They will continue to be good. Just happens that they were put on notice that Georgia Tech is to be reckoned with. During the streak of 7, reasonable observers will notice that the games have been, with one exception, mostly close and Tech was rarely given credit for being a worthy opponent in any of them even though a break or two could have changed the outcome. The pieces of the puzzel that eluded us for the last 7 years are falling into place with Paul Johnson and I look forward to hard-fought classic battles to come.

Oh, and to those of you who say it was ONLY 3 points…. it ONLY takes 1. For us lowly ACC teams, we gotta start somewhere. Like the worst of the Dog fans wouldn’t act like 3 points was a blowout, a domination, a summary execution, an ownership! And…be in our faces ad nauseum. If you catch some smack, suck it up guys, you earned it.

Amazing story… an interception, a fumbled punt, two or three missed tackles to allow the “three yards and a cloud of dust” offense to turn the corner and run, and a kicker who can’t kickoff. That was the game I saw. No question, congratulations for Tech and underachievement for Georgia; rivalry reborn, now there is a headline in look of a story. Could we give it a season or two and see if this is a turnover, missed tackle fluke or a real swing to Tech domination. Again, hearty congratulations to Tech. Told a Tech friend of mine the best team did win on Saturday. Not sure that makes them… words fail me so I guess that is why we have Mr. Schultz. Now GO DOGS, get you heads out of your butts, work harder and win.

I watched the pups all year on tv and saw a lot of potential. When they played with some fire and intensity they were very good. But, it just seemed to me that the emotion was a very difficult thing to harness on a consistent basis. I think the best evidence of the problem being coaching was seen in two different pictures from the game this weekend.

  • Coach Paul Johnson was intense, in the face of the Tech players when they did not handle a play right, celebrating openly and with emotion when they did something good. His energy and fire was transmitted to the players and, he never let up the entire game.

  • Mark Richt just seemed to be too calm, especially for a game as big as the UGA-GT game is every year, and especially this year. The team meeting on the sidelines in the second half spoke volumes when shown on tv. Once again, no emotion. I mean, get real, this was your house, pups. And, you let us bugs sting you good in your own house. Moreno was the only dog that showed some fire after that last TD, and I would have thought that would have fired everybody up, but it didn’t. Emotion can’t overcome talent for sure. But when the talent is there, that want it more than anyone else attitude can take the day. It is the coaches job to get into the heads of the players and make sure that fire is there. Tech had it, the Pups did not. Both are talented, both have the ability, but Tech just seemed to keep the fire and drive alive for the entire game, which is what I witnessed of them all year, even in the games they lost. If I were a UGA fan, I would be very disappointed and upset with the coaching and lack of tapping all that potential in a year when so much was expected.

  • All the crap about SEC vs ACC and which is better means nothing in this series. I have been attending or watching Tech and Georgia play since going to my first game with my dad way back in 1959. Whose is ranked where and what conference each one is in means nothing when the pups and bugs meet on the field. It boils down to coaching, talent, and desire. Tech was at a severe disadvantage the past few years, but that has changed now. So, we will see if Georgia can find the fire to go with the talent next year. In the mean time, THWG!

First off, i want to congratulate the Tech players, coaches, staff for a great win. i must tip my cap to them. they outplayed us and beat us in our own house.

i know that the tech alumni and students are proud of their team and excited about what the future holds.

Second, i must give my vote to Paul Johnson for coach of the year - not just ACC but nationally. he has truly earned it. i have a lot of respect for him. although Saban has done an incredible job i think Johnson deserves it.

wish we could have gotten this one in athens because it is going to be that much tougher to get the next one in Bobby Dodd.

Congrats to Tech. The team that played the best won. My beloved Dogs committed two turnovers that led directly to 14 Tech points. Tech to their credit did not turn the ball over at all. Turnovers will kill you in football and with a 45-42 score, I think that was the difference.

I have been following the Dogs for 40+ years and never thought a Dog team that scored 42 points would lose a game. I don’t think either of our defenses were anything to get excited about. However with the exception of the final score, it was one of the most exciting UGA-Tech games in many years.

I hope some of you bloggers get your ugly hate under control. I would hate to see this rivalry game discontinued because a handful of fans on both sides cause it to spin out of control. It has happened with Alabama-Auburn and a lot of other natural geographic rivalries. Please don’t cause it here.

Enjoy your win and we will see you next year.

I have to agree with BillGTDenn…….

CMR is a great person. But he never, hardly ever shows any emotion on the sidelines. Football feeds off both talent and emotion and planning…………. 2 of which (emotion and planning) were obviously missing against Tech.

Maybe if he got Watergirl back in the stands where she belongs he would open up a little.

I’ve come to the conclusion that CMR lack of emotion and poor game management skills along with the same for his coaching staff is a real concern.

If CMR isn’t the type of personality it takes to troll the sidelines, maybe he should just go into preaching and teaching Sunday School full time or go to work selling Ford trucks!!!’

Thanks, Jeff! As always, you went straight to the point: the rivalry has a pulse.

If Bulldog fans can now pick up their bedraggled selves, they may realize that Stafford & company can still win a bowl game, and salvage a modicum of success.

On the other hand, if S & c DON’T win, then their team, which was supposed to go 14-0, will have tailspinned to 9-4!

    To UGA Fans,

Great game, but please do not criticize GT fans for talking trash after sat. UGA fans have been the most annoying and unrelenting trash talkers I have ever experienced in my life. I don’t even think Ohio State, USC, and (dare I say) Notre Damwe fans talk as much trash as some of the UGA faithful

I would love this rivalry to be one amongst gentlemen. UGA is a great institution of higher learning that just happens to have a d@mn good football program as well. I hope the Dawgs finish their season with a bowl victory over whoever they play.

I am huge GT fan but, like gentlemen, GT and its faithful must accept victory in an honorable fashion.

First of all I want to say congrats to the Jackets and their fans. Ya’ll beat us fair and square. We lined up across from each other and Roddy Jones & Jon Dwyer rand over, around and through our defense. Martinez can be blamed, the players can be blamed and tech’s players can be blamed for whipping our butts. But if Martinez isn’t fired he damn well better bring a better gameplan next year. But the point I want to make is a question to all the GT fans. You had a hell of a first season and you deserve everything you have gotten this year, that said how far do you think Paul Johnson’s triple option will take you. I mean yall have had a great year but we have to remember that this was the first time a lot of these defenses have faced the triple option. Do you really think that given a full year of film and time to get ready that this will work for a whole year again. I mean Paul Johnson has had sucess with this offense but come on now we’re not talking about the defense of Appalachain State and Army here. These coaches are going to figure out how to stop this one dimensional attack. I mean it’s just a question repond please but once again congrats and we’ll c you next year for the revived version of OLD-FASHIONED HATE.

A Real Dawg, Yeeah, when Paul Johnson’s opponents at Georgia Southern and Navy played his teams year after year, they really started stopping his offense. Oh that’s right, they really did not start stopping his offense, di they. And don’t say the defenses in the ACC and SEC will do better. It is all about level of competition. When he was at GSU, the level of competition was similar, just like it will be at Tech. I mean, when he was playing Appalachain State and Army, they had similar levels of talent.

It’s funny Tech’s No. 1 goal was to beat Georgia this year. Yeah … I think I would forget about winning the ACC or even making a bowl game. Tech never ceases to amaze me. In a long history of domination by the Bulldog Nation, I guess I can understand why Tech feels the need to set such high goals … Techies, not bad … one win in eight years is pretty good to the bumble bee nation, afterall, it was your goal this year. Well, congrats, you achieved your goal. So, I guess, Bulldog Nation, we can expect Tech to win again in 2016.

Give me cool precision over emotion. Dallas’s Tom Landry was one of football’s best, him and that hat.

I like the Colt’s coach too. He rarely shows emotion. He wins.

I think the hotheaded, throw a red flag on every close call, loose cannon, bulged eye’d, red-faced out-of-control coach on the sidelines is an embarrassment to not just football, but to all of humankind, (and primates too).

It’s a game. Get over it.

The dogs have one weakness on the football field: Richt. Tech had one advantage over the Bulldogs: Richt.

It’s Richt. It’s always been Richt. We would be number one if we had any other coach. Even Mora.

I think there’s an opening for a badmitton coach at Vassar.

I’m just simply stating when your arrogant coach tells Erin Andrews the night of the Miami game that this game is big, but next week is bigger … come on.
