Dogs gonna get stung by Jackets

For as much the Japanese blew the United States away with plasma TV sets that slide on your ring finger and cars that get more than 7.4 miles per gallon (on the highway, downhill), they seem to be having issues with the basics.

I cite this week’s story out of northern Japan, where zookeepers were dumbfounded why two polar bears just wouldn’t mate. For six months.

At first, they figured it was the usual. She wanted to talk, he wanted a sandwich. She wanted to dance, he wanted a Barcalounger. She asked that one question that tends to end every relationship: “What do you think?”

But no, the problem turned out to be something far more significant. They were both females!

“Observing his behaviors, we got suspicious as to whether Tsuyoshi was really a male,” the zoo said in a statement. And you know, I really like it when I don’t even have to make this stuff up.

Zookeepers finally sedated “Tsuyoshi” and discovered his, well, polarhood. Following this moment of clarity, the zoo abandoned breeding plans. It’s believed the two female bears then got up at 4 o’clock that morning to save 37 cents on Play-Doh and dish towels.

Speaking of moments of clarity — aspiring journalists: this would be the transition — there have been a few about Georgia and Georgia Tech this season. The Bulldogs began the year No. 1 but turned out to be not that great. The Yellow Jackets began the year as a project but turned out to be not that bad.

The Dogs are the better team — when they care. But they struggled against Kentucky and Auburn, not long after Florida stole their polarhood.

The line has dropped to eight points. I’m not sure Tech has enough offense. But I’m pretty sure which team still has a pulse. Give me the eight points. In fact, give me an upset. And make me a sandwich.

Keggers

Auburn at Alabama: Both teams are coming off byes, which gave Tommy Tuberville a week to paint the trim in his house and get it ready for the market, and Nick Saban time to conquer Austria and Liechtenstein. Bama ends the six-year nightmare — but won’t cover 14.

Florida at FSU: Remember when Larry Holmes fought an old Muhammad Ali and felt so bad about pounding him in the corner that he turned to the ref and said, “Stop the fight”? Urban Meyer vs. Bobby Bowden. Gators cover 16-1/2.

Virginia at Virginia Tech: It’s such an important game that Frank Beamer declined to let the media speak to his players. Remember when the Hokies were so good that they could answer probing questions like, “How do you feel, Bobby?” without falling to pieces? Still, VaTech covers 8.

Kentucky at Tennessee: Three weeks after being fired, Phil Fulmer exits on “Phil Fulmer Appreciation Day.” Make sense? Is Johnny Majors going to give him back his knife during halftime ceremonies? Vols cover 4-1/2.

LSU at Arkansas: Bobby Petrino made it 13 games as the Falcons coach before turning into an invertebrate. The good news about going 1-7 in the SEC is the Piggies aren’t bowl eligible, so the year won’t be so taxing, big fella. Tigers cover 4-1/2.

NFL Value Menu

(Sleight-of-Hand Dept: Falcons announced that they feel your pain and will start payment options for immediate season ticket renewals, but backdoor the news that prices will skyrocket next season.)

Falcons at Chargers: LaDainian Tomlinson has run for 770 yards and five touchdowns. His former backup, Michael Turner, has run for 1,088 yards and 13 touchdowns. I figured this would go over better than recounting who made out better in the Michael Vick trade again. Take the gift 5, but Birds win this straight up.

Steelers at Patriots: Matt Cassel, who is making the NFL minimum, has thrown for 815 yards and six touchdowns in the last two games. But Pittsburgh’s defense: not good for a free agent’s resume. Steelers win (take the 1).

Broncos at Jets: I’m sure it made Mike Smith feel really good that Denver lost to Oakland the week after winning in the Georgia Dome. Waiter, another hemlock smoothie please. Jets win, but won’t cover the 7 1/2.

Dolphins at Rams: Marc Bulger has a concussion. With any luck, he has forgotten whom he plays for. Fish win.

Giants at Redskins: New York has scored 35, 36, 30 and 37 in the last four against pretty good teams (Dallas, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Arizona). Sorry for the research. Trying to fill my quota. The 3 1/2 is covered.

Financial ledger

(It was a good week. You may bow now.)

Last week: 9-2 straight up, 8-3 against the line.

Season to date: 88-42 straight up, 65-63-2 against the line.

Jeff…great comparison between the polar bears and the Dawgs. Great item on Phil Fulmer…I wish I could have been fired when I worked in the real world…like Fulmer. I could live very comfortable for what that whale shark got paid. What are you gonna do now that he’s gone?? Your comments on Phil Fulmer have been classic moments in sports journalism. And you’re right about him stabbing Johnny Majors in the back…also I will never forgive that hypocrite for turning in Alabama back in the 1990s…everyone knows he did it and yet the NCAA never, suspiciously, found anything wrong in Knoxville. Spare me…I could never figure out Fulmer got half of his teams even enrolled in school.

Jeff, I get your humor. The write uo on UGA as hard for it was to read; is accurate.UF stole their ” polarhood” That was a good one. I still see UGA winning, but to d—- close for me. I say Tech moves the ball between the 20s. As for ATL, hope you are right. I think this win will be huge. I also think this win will get ATL in the play offs.

The Dawgs definitely have the top players. I just hope that they take the Jackets lightly and that Tech brings in A game. If those things happen, we might be in for a surprise.

Glad to see Fulmer finally on his way out. Majors was a class act — and a hell of a player. But if UT brings in a decent coach they will be back at the top of the conference.

Creative. Accurate, to a point. Analogy? Not all that clear (mating female polar bears and discipline issues and underperformance and…whatever).

Georgia has more talent. We all seem to agree on that.

Tech’s had a great season, considering expectations. Universal agreement there, as well.

My theory (which is a s good as yours, only I have a day job)?

My theory is that Georgia’s defense is tired of hearing about how Tech’s gonna run right through them. And they’re tired of hearing about how they’re soft and unaggressive and commit boneheaded penalties. And they will NOT take the Jackets lightly, especially after the whippin’ they put on the Hurricanes. Moreover, the Dawgs have had they’ve had two weeks to prepare, which helps.

I think the Dawgs WILL care about this one. Stafford, Moreno, Green, Massaquoi and company will come out determined to give the defense some breathing room, the defense will play to their potential, and an early deficit will force the Jackets to abandon their usual game plan to catch up.

Barring a flurry of turnovers, I see the Dawgs winning this contest at home. Maybe not by 8 or 11 (the game is always close lately, with the exception being in 2002), but a W is a W.

So there you have it.

If a polar bear falls in the forest and nobody’s around, does anybody care?

If the pope falls out of a boat, does he hit a hindu?

Don’t count your Jackets before they hatch…

Jeff, why haven’t you ever written a book? It seems that the better sports columnists — like Mike Lupica, Mr. Bisher there in your own newsroom, Bill Plaschke, John Feinstein, etc. — get book deals. Where’s yours? Is it, maybe, because no publisher could stomach the idea of more than about 300 words of your drivel at a time?

Speculating about who will win the state championship game makes for a good discussion. After all, who has a clue as to what will happen? Your best bet this year is to go with whomever Lee Corso picks- he’s been on a pretty solid roll.

It’s 35-18. The classic Tech winning score. That was so fun for a whole year seeing UGA people and saying “So, how’s it going? What have you been up to? BTW, 35-18”.

Looking forward to many wins under Coach Johnson.

Wouldn’t it be great to be a aportswriter? A perfect pundit? An expert on everything? No Jeff, I imagine the Bulldogs were about what they were supposed to be (after 18 season-ending injuries). It was the pre-season hype that led to the Dogs not living up to your expectations as well as the rest of the sportswriters. The truth is - you called it wrong, but refuse to take responsibility for it. A team doesn’t live up to your expectations and they are always at fault - never you. Well, you called it wrong, buddy, it’s your fault that you missed - not Georgia’s - or anyone else that was highly ranked. By the way, Georgia will beat Tech in a hard-fought game, draw a high-second tier bowl, beat the worthless Big 10 (again) and finish a solid top-ten with an 11-2 overall record. Not bad in anybody’s book - even the perfect pundit’s world like yours.

For the life of me you would never have thought that UGA had just lost 2 games this season! Those 2 games were against 2 of the best teams in the country, one may become the NC. GT does not have the HORSES that UGA has! GT has NOT played the competition UGA has played. Can we win, possibly, but not very probable! If we can recruit then this game will become competitive. I give Coach Johnson 2 years to bring us back in to football respectability!

Big Bug I believe you are a closet georgia fan or just the worst fan I have seen in my life. Here is the key = Fumbles. I say if tech looses it twice it’s over. If Tech doesn’t then it could be a win. I don’t believe the talent is much different. I feel Moreno will be the best player on the field saturday and jonathan dwyer will be right behind him. Then it will be A.J. Green. I wouldn’t get to Stafford in a while because he wouldn’t be in my top 5 and barely my top 10. I think he is the most overrated quarterback in college football behind Graham Harrel. The next key is Stafford and if he can manage to put up an effort in a big game for the dawgs. If he has less touchdown throws thank Joe Cox at the end of the game like against Florida then obviously it won’t be much of a game. He needs to show in a big game. My x-factor is Morgan Burnett. Tech will need a lot of help from him to cover aj green. Burnett had a tough game last year and really wants to come out and make a difference. I look for him to be pumped to do something. He is 2nd in the nation in picks and Tech could use one of them saturday. I’m going to predict Tech to beat Georgia for the first time in a long time in a close game. Gimme Tech:27 Georgia:23 in a great ballgame.

Mike, Now I am not a fan of JS either. In fact I had boycotted him for over a year. As a Tech fan, the title of the article drew me back for one more read.

To blame JS for uga not living up to expectations? Come on! You can’t say it was just JS’s expectations. Everybody from Bubba at the tow truck driver in Alma to the Cover of SI had crowned uga before the season ever started. It was a mail in as far as everyone was concerned.

Apparently Tebow never broke down in Alma and Saban didn’t renew his subscription to SI. They both showed up and showed out all over the dawgs.

Cry injuries all you want. Tech was not near as loaded as uga to begin with. And as nearly every uga blogger in this rag has pointed out, Tech had defectors as soon as CPJ was named. You had us down for 3 wins max.

Tech has been plagued by injuries all season. Our starting QB was out for three games and his back up was out for one of those. Tech won all three. Tech has also not started their five best on OL in one game this year either. They have won in spite of all the set backs.

uga has great players and a lot of them. Tech has a very good, bordering on great TEAM. The talent level very well may be too great his year. If Tech wins it will be because they believe and get coached up. The talent level will continue to even out as players choose to play for a coach.

Stop crying about it being someone else’s fault that uga didn’t live up to expectations. They were cocky and undisciplined as demonstrated by the off field actions in the off season and penalties on field.

By Jan Kemp

November 28, 2008 7:29 AM | Link to this

If we are going to go back to the talk about winning legally, I suppose uga needs to give back that NC and Lord only knows how many wins during the Prince Vince era. Let’s give that one a rest.

Both programs are cleean now…I guess. But then with all the trouble that the uga players have on an off the field with playing by the rules, it wouldn’t surprize me to hear they are being investigated in the near future.

No discipline. But a lot of love over their by St. Mark.

Funny stuff Jeff. But here is something even more fun.

Every year, the AJC says, Oh this year Tech will catch UGA looking and win in an upset.Seven years looking for an upset. And seven years the AJC has had to write “UGA wins”.Maybe Tech should score a touchdown and then dance on the field.

Tech will score some points, no doubt. But that tech defense will not stop moreno. Or Green, or Stafford. So for an 8th year you will be able to write…UGA wins.”

And then you can dream about your upset special for next year.

Prediction: Georgia gets tired of AJC writers Moore, Shultz and others and takes fustration of season out on Jackets and smacks the S%&t out of tech: 41-17.

Thump….Thump….Thump…The beat goes on and Dawgs win again. GT Fans, your hate for those things Dawg makes me laugh. You know you have somebodies’ number when they write some ofthe things that are on here. As for the high rankings and (in some opinions) not met expectations…”it is better to have loved and lost than to never had a remote chance at love” at all like the crew from Tech. See you on Saturday where there will be more Dawg fans that will not get in Sanford to cheer on the Dawgs that show up for a game at BD high school stadium. By the way, when you have empty seats at a nationally televised game like you did at the Miami whuppin’ (which I enjoyed by the way), you should be banned as fans from posting anything.

it’s good to see the bugs finally make some noise, since they have win only ten times in the last forty years against boys from the classic city.

of course, there numbers have dropped so much over the years that they still cannot fill-up grant’s tomb.

paul johnson is a very good coach ,but if he does not get any more support than he is getting now, the techies will lose ,yet another coach!

the game boils down to which the georgia defensive team shows up.

if tech can play ball control and dawgs offense sits on the bench, i could be a long day for the dawgs.

To the blogger that said he put $1000 down that Georgia would cover the 8 points on Tech, you are an idiot sir. Georgia has played down to the competition all year. They did not cover against UT, Vandy, UK or Auburn. These games should not have been close. The Dawgs will open up a huge lead on Saturday and Tech will eat away at it. Dawgs win but do not cover. You should put a $1000 on it.

For some funny reason I see Auburn beating Alabama. Alabama is not nearly as good as they were in Sept. and Oct. and Auburn is a little better. Alabama has all the pressure on them-lost 6 in a row, playing for National Championship etc…also some teams just have other teams number, for example you can look around and see some streaks in rivalry games even when the winning team wasen’t as good. Sounds funny but I see Auburn winning..

After watching both Tech and UGA play several games this year, here is what I believe might happen. The pups defense will be under alot of pressure to show up and do well. This may make them too aggressive, and play right into the hands of the triple option. Tech is motivated and coming into Athens with a mission. The first half will tell the tale. Tech will score early and with maybe a twist or two from CPJ put 21 points up before the half. The pups will play solid offense, against a solid YJ defense. Stalemate. Halftime score: GT-21 UGA-7.

Then the fun begins. Adjustment time. The pups will try to storm back and manage a couple of TD’s in the third, the stingers will pop at least a field goal, so going into the fourth it will be 24-21, bugs. Both defenses will have found their metal, the rain will be heavy, the field will be sloppy, and both teams may manage a score, with Tech pulling out a squeaker, 31 to 28. (It could just as easily be the pups that manage a come-back, especially if Tech develops fumbleitis.)

The rest of the picks:

Alabama-38 Auburn-21 Florida-56 FSU-24 Virginia-24 VaTech-21 Tennessee-28 Kentucky-27 LSU-28 Arkansas-7

Falcons-30 Chargers-21 Steelers-24 Patriots-21 Rams-21 Dolphins-17 Broncos-27 Jets-24 Giants-35 Redskins-21

Its so funny lisen to tech fans every time they change coaches They are ready to start a run of beaten UGA. The new name for Tech coaches is always ” COACH GIVE HIM TIME” and he will beat UGA in four years he becomes ” COACH GOT TO BEAT GEORGIA TO KEEP HES JOB’. Then this crazy stuff starts all over. Hey remember when REGGIE was a freshmen all we heard was what he was goning to do for the nexted 3 years God i miss him. Even the great Calvin JOHNSON was reduced to a below acerage player against UGA. So tomorrow is easy DAWGs roll 35-10, TECH has at least 3 fumbles. But look on the bright side tech fans you still have 2 more years before its COACH GOT TO BEAT UGA ‘is back

It is plain. It is simple. Every ACC team to be ranked in the Top 25 this year (following some big win the previous week), loses the following week, dropping out of the Top 25. Both Boston College and Georgia Tech are ranked in the Top 25 this week. Therefore, both of those ACC teams will lose this Saturday. It has nothing to do with who they play.

When both teams play the same weekend (including Thursday night games) the Atlanta Falcons have won every weekend Georgia Tech has won (this includes the last week of preseason for Atlanta, when the game against Baltimore coinsided with Tech opening game against Jackson State). When both teams have played the same weekend, the Atlanta Falcons have lost two of the three weekends Georgia Tech has lost. The lone exception was Georgia Tech at North Carolina (L), while the Atlanta Falcons won at home, versus the New Orleans Saints. Atlanta has lost both times Georgia Tech had a bye weekend. Georgia Tech won the one weekend the Atlanta Falcons had a bye. Since Georgia Tech will lose this weekend, the Atlanta Falcons will lose also. Point spreads and favorites have no bearing on this outcome.

In the alabama game,we georgia fans thought we were top dogs. The football team thought they were more than top dogs, putting more focus on all black uniforms. We were brought down to earth not realizing that you have to play every game like youre the underdog and anyone can beat you.Leading up to the florida game , well we ticked a great team off last year. You noticed I did not blame any of this on the injuries to offensive line or defensive injuries. #1 teams get through injuries and still win.Now if Georgia finally realizes this, they will win today. If not we will get stung and will need bee sting medicicine. Do I HAVE ANY COMMENTS ON THIS. By the way the shock of the day will be in the iron bowl.

Well, about now, the crappy stadium at smelly UGAy is filled with 90,000 rednecks and another 200,000 rednecks watching from their double wides. I love it! Your OVERATED team went from preseason # 1 to 13th. After you lose to the JACKETS today, you will drop below GT in the polls. What a nice way to end the season. UGAy at 9-3 and UNDERACHIEVED and GT at 9-3 and OVERACHIEVED. The triple option and the weopons of Nesbitt, Dwyer, and Thomas will prevail against your crappy D. Your O line is young and basically suck, so Michael Johnson should be sacking Stafford about 10 times. Also, if you throw to illeterate Green and Massaquai, or whatever his name is, it will be picked off by Burnett. You will not win on a last minute play like normal and you won’t be able to stop the run, which will open up the passing game if we even need it? JACKETS ROLL. “THWG” GO GT! I can’t wait to see 290,000 rednecks, especially the sorry seniors balling after the game. What a site that will be, as well as tearing up and shredding your smelly redneck hedges. Make sure you ice UGA VII nuts on ice, as he will need it after the azz kickin your rednceks are going to receive. GO JACKETS!!!!!

To UGA fans: Congrats on your seven-year run. It’s over; show some respect. Don’t talk about how your team’s poor play cost them the game. You only turned the ball over twice, and you scored 6 TDs. Your excellent passing game beat up our young secondary, but our D contained Moreno. You didn’t miss a ton of tackles, either. It was good blocking by all 11 of Tech’s players on offense that led to our big plays.

This game was not a fluke. Tech is for real.
