Football Picks: Downgrading the SEC

In a development without nearly the global ramifications of the SEC’s drop in stature behind the Big 12 and, yes, even China, the Auburn Fire Department responded to an early morning blaze Wednesday at an apartment complex near campus.

The fire apparently began in a clothes dryer, where investigators found the charred remains of two pairs of jeans, three shirts and Willie Martinez, which is interesting because usually he spontaneously combusts only on Saturdays.

It has been a difficult season for Martinez. Georgia’s defense has allowed 125 points in the past three games. Opponents have scored 38 or more points four times this season and — I actually looked this up — only one other SEC school (Arkansas) has done that even three times. If the Bulldogs really want to do some serious fundraising, they should build a roller coaster and a water slide in the end zone. Two more games and they’ll have enough for another weight room.

Mark Richt spent most of the week defending Martinez and putting out fires, at one point even commenting: “I’m sure there are a hundred teams out there who would like to be where we’re at now.”

Just a thought: When trying to appease only occasionally rational SEC fans with high expectations, it’s probably not a good idea to compare yourself to Baylor, UTEP and the other 98.

The Dogs’ march toward ego salvation continues Saturday in Auburn. Unlike Georgia, the Tigers got an early start on dousing expectations when they beat Mississippi State 3-2. Maybe Martinez has met his match.

No defense vs. No offense. The line says Georgia by 8 1/2. Sparks: not likely. Georgia wins but doesn’t cover.

School Daze

Spurrier at Florida: Mixed emotions for Georgia fans: Weighing the potential of Steve Spurrier’s smug smile against Urban Meyer’s stare of despair should the Gamecocks wreck the Gators’ BCS hopes. OK, easy choice. But don’t count on it. South Carolina is better now. But Florida has outscored its past five opponents 243-57, give or take a major organ. Gators win. But take the points (21) for the scare.

Missy State at Alabama: Sylvester Croom owns Nick Saban in this series. I figure that’s my last chance to say that. Bama covers 20 1/2.

B.C. at Florida State: The Seminoles are having a “blackout” game. No word if the band will play, “Glory, Glory” or just go with a simple dirge. Despite the fashion faux pas: 6 1/2 is covered.

Vanderbilt at Kentucky: You know how sometimes defensive coaches will look to see what worked against an opponent the week before? Not going to happen here. But good news for Vanderbilt: Kentucky’s gotta be tired. Upset: Commodores (but take the 4).

North Carolina at Maryland: Some reiteration from Butch Davis: “I have absolutely no interest whatsoever in the University of Tennessee job.” He would, however, consider cleaning up radiation spills. Heels cover 3.

Pros and Cons

Broncos at Falcons: The Falcons have won four of five, are 4-0 at home and, capping the hat trick of startling developments, suddenly making Rich McKay’s draft picks look very good. The Broncos just signed Tatum Bell. He must’ve looked fast on tape from the Lions’ surveillance camera that showed him stealing Rudi Johnson’s bag out of the lobby after being cut. Birds cover 6.

Raiders Of The Lost Hope: Al Davis has stripped Greg Knapp of play-calling duties. Maybe he’s sane after all. Miami covers 10 1/2.

Cowboys and Indians: DeAngelo Hall is now in Washington earning the NFL minimum, which at least means people can’t scream that he’s an overpaid blowhard. I think. And what wonderful timing for D-minus-Hall: Dallas gets Tony Romo back. Cowboys cover 1 1/2 on the road.

Rams at 49ers: The Niners might not have been the smartest team in the final minute last week. But they played hard, and Mike Singletary kept his clothes on. Small steps. SanFran wins but take St. Losing and 6.

Titans at Jaguars: Tennessee is 9-0, but then it has been an NFL state for a while now. When does Knoxville asked to be annexed by Nashville? Titans cer the 3.

Portfolio

• Last week: 7-3 straight up, 6-4 against the line.

•Totals: 71-37 straight up, 52-54-2 against the line.

Jeff,

Watch Auburn’s offense get well vs WM’s D. I hope not, but what an indictment that would be.

Bama and UF are headed for the SECC which will be a better game than the NC game. Furthermore, the NC game will have either Bama or UF.

Jeff,

Gotta disagree with you on the dawgs and Auburn. I think UGA covers easy, the game is a potential blowout. UGA can score 40 against Auburn but will probably score in the 30s. But Auburn’s offense is so terrible that an average UGA defense will either shut em down completely or limit them to a token 10 pts or so. Psychology is firmly on the dawgs side too, Their defense is embarrassed from the criticism and is gonna give everything they got. I’m thinking Auburn is in a little turmoil and lacking confidence at this point in the season. This is the play of the day and could get ugly.

I’m also shocked that you picked my Bammers to beat Missy State by 21 or more. I’m hoping you’re right but we are historically terrible against the line as a double digit home favorite.

As for North Carolina and Maryland is there anyone that really cares?

My guess is that the Dawgs D actually shows this week, but their offense flounders…such has been the season, just can’t get both sides of the ball to play lights out. Dawgs over Auburn 17-13.

FSU is not copying UGAY’s blackout…he he he…that would be asking for a whipping! Rather they are aiming to copy the much older tradition of Penn State’s “white out at the white house”. UGAY copied this without the wins and chose a different color. Still plagiarism! But what can you expect from a school of higher learning (See past basketball exam). Is not the Glory, Glory song not plagiarized as well from the Battle Hymn of the Republic or John’s Brown body…What else is UGAy good for? Certainly not originality.

Hey Bobby Dodd, You need to check your facts before you go attacking others. Most fight songs are “plagiarized” from either old pub songs or other songs found throughout the years. And are you really going to bring up the basketball exam? really, that would be like me digging back up 51-7 or the fact that how many of your football team were given grades that caused you to have to forfeit games from 98- 2000

Wilie played at Miami right? Has he completely forgotten how they played defense or did he suffer a head energy, because UGA doesn’t remotely resemble the teams they had a Miami. UGA is the worst tackling team in the SEC. Everytime they try to make a tackle their head goes down and their arm goes out. They don’t have a clue as how to make a shoulder tackle. They have counted every worm in Sanford stadium, TWICE!

WhopperDawg … If Auburn’s offense gets well against Georgia, Willie might not want to get on the bus for the ride home. …. DoubleG: I try not to go to the Chihuahua well two weeks in a row. …. FlaDawg: The reference was obviously to the BCS title game: Those hopes are dead if Spurrier engineers the upset (which I don’t think will happen). …. Bama12Titles: You might be right. But let’s face it — Georgia doesn’t blow out a lot of teams, and certainly not this season. …. I guess that’s what happens when reality finally sets in that your team is the most over ranked/hype team in the most over ranked/hyped conference in the history of college football.

Maybe he’s still bitter over the fleabags getting beat in the greatest choke of colligate sports by the Fresno State Bulldawgs in baseball team…One things for sure, he’s an angry little boy.

I think UGAG will need both of their QB’s who like to spoon to pull this one out in the end. UGAG wins 24-21. Matthew will get banged up.

I hope I’m wrong, but that doesn’t happen often.

I get the sense that Georgia’s D is ready for a big game. The players are embarrassed by their performance last week as illustrated by the players-only meeting. It’s easy for casual fans (or even the coaching “experts” that regularly blog here) to put the blame on Martinez, but the players know where the fault really lies, themselves. I wouldn’t be surprised if Bama12titles is right, Jeff. Maybe Georgia doesn’t blow out a lot of teams, but that doesn’t mean they can’t. Dawgs make a statement Saturday 45-3. By the way, I’ll be at the FSU blackout, Georgia has no monopoly on firing up players and fans, neither does Penn State or any other school.

By gtne80

November 14, 2008 10:23 AM | Link to this

Auburn wouldn’t score if UGA’s defense left the field for the whole second quarter. Stafford, Moreno, Greene, et. al. can surely put up at least 28 on the Auburn D by the end of the day. I figure UGA to cover.

UNC at MD is hard to figure. Maryland looked like crap against VT last week while UNC looked like world-beaters against a tired GT squad. Logic says UNC continues to get better and rolls on UMd. The ACC has been everything but logical this year. Take the Terps.

If this was Vegas, they’d take the FSU-BC game off the board until they figure out how many of the Free Shoes Criminoles will be suspended for fighting with the frat boys. Some things never change. Babblin’ Bobby will probably excuse his thugs for the day, especially if one of them is the guy that’s responsible for emptying his drool cup on the sidelines. FSU will roll.

By Jeff Schultz

November 14, 2008 10:36 AM | Link to this

Gary: You might be right. But the players had a chance to be fueled by “embarrassment” after giving up 31 points in the first half to Alabama, and the points allowed in the LSU and Florida game. There’s no question Georgia has speed on that side of the ball. But at this point, you just have to question how good they are. …. gtne80: If I was in a Las Vegas sportsbook, I wouldn’t bet an ACC game all season. One week means nothing for the next week. But I do like Carolina in that game. ….. By the way, any Tech fans out there see Miami last night? Your thoughts? Not going to be an easy game next Thursday.

D.Ellis, I have to change my prediction now, it’s not too late. They haven’t kicked the ball off yet.

Mutts lose, Barnhart and Schultz both pick you to win.

You have no chance now. Awbarn 17, Fleabags 13.

Did you see Miami last night? Good thing you don’t have to play them, considering what UF did to you.

Looks like its going to be on GT shoulders from now on to represent the state with the big boys down in Florida.

Watched only part of the UM-VT game. It didn’t appear to me that Miami is exactly an offensive juggernaut. From the final score, I see that they were only able to hang 16 on VT. On the other hand, they have always been very athletic and fast on defense. Could be a very low scoring affair next Thursday.

Yes, Miami has a good, speedy D. But so does FSU, and the Jackets moved the ball pretty well vs. the Noles (who came to town riding a wave of confidence).

Jeffie- You just gotta bring up Martinez, don’t you? Many of the UGA fans are saddened by the rush to judgement concerning Martinez and many of us know it has legs given by you and other media pundits(aka douche bags). Our coach and players spoke up this week and it should have removed the blot created by a few sincere fans but whipped into a bonfire by those that wish UGA and it’s football program harm. Our great frustration from losing to the Crier has been spent until next year. Why don’t you join the layoff and come up with an interesting subject…like football. Your attempt at writing meaningful subjects must be about dead by now. Why don’t some of you sit in a meeting with Furman Bisher and brag how you can manipulate serious fans into denigrating their coaches abilities..just for fun. I think enough of Mr. Bisher that I think he would start a blog of how his writers aren’t cutting it and we can join in the fray. How’s that for a blogging subject? You guys can’t write like you could last year and they ought to fire you all and start with a new slate. Many posters write better than you guys do anyhow.

So, how about it, Jeffie? We get to blog how you guys aren’t cuttin’ th’ mustard this year and we start a website calling for Furman Bisher to fire your butt! Now that’s a blog with Bulldog teeth in it.

Haven’t seen him make a tackle all year long, come to think of it I can’t remember the last time he intercepted a pass. By BE#3

November 14, 2008 8:25 PM | Link to this

Let me throw this concept out there in regards to CWM.

So you are a manager/director at a business. You have a pool of 22 people to fill 11 jobs. Of those 22, you mix and match to find the best 11 you can put together. You move people in and out depending on who gets the job done best. You can’t hire more than the 22 you have and can’t fire any of them either. So you’re stuck. You try to develop all 22 and help them improve. Some do, some don’t. Most people in leadership roles have the ability to hire and fire as needed to improve their organizations. CWM does not have that luxury.

Maybe these 4 and 5 star kids were a little overrated. Maybe not. Maybe it’s CWM’s fault for not coaching them up to their potential.

Maybe it’s not all CWM’s fault. Maybe he’s doing the best he can with what he has to work with. Players have stepped up this week and said they have not been making plays and that CWM is not to blame. Who knows?

Either way I think everyone in the Bulldawg Nation know that it is a concern. Players, Coaches and Fans are all concerned. How do the Dawgs handle it? Do they step up and dismantle a team that has not beat a D1 opponent since September? Let’s hope so.

GO DAWGS!!!!!!

Jeff,

UGA plays poorly at 12:30pm kickoff’s. Still, the media is talking UGA’s defense down and Auburn’s offense up. That bodes badly for Auburn.

  • UGA covers the -9.5
  • Gators covers the -22( Garcia will have a bad day against that Gator defense)
  • Bama wins but doesn’t cover( MSU is coming off a bye week and plays up to their competition. They beat Vandy, lost to Kentucky by 3 and LSU by 10).
  • FSU wins but doesn’t cover the -6 5.Vandy @ Kentucky: toss up and I’m staying off it. -4 is a terrible line.
  • Maryland beat North Carolina @ home( they are 5-0 at home this year).
  • NFL 1. Broncos beat Falcons 2.Miami over Oakland and cover spread 3. Washington over Dallas 4.Rams cover spread over the 49ers 5. Titans over the Jags

I’m going to take the Dawgs in a close one, say 17-13.

I see Florida laying a new record on Spurrier, with an EASY victory over SC.

I see Vandy getting a bowl bid after a win over Kentucky.

That Troy team is better than most 1-A school realize. I see them throwing a scare into the Tigers at LSU, but the home team will win. Take Troy and 10.

Alabama retains number one with a big victory over MSU.

Maryland squeeks by NC and holds serve at home.

Boston College will silence the Tomahawk Chop in Tallahassee, beating FSU.

And, the upset special is NC State over Wake Forest.

Tune in tomorrow for my pro picks.
