Football picks that won’t get you fired, even at Auburn

In the fastest anybody at Auburn has moved since reports of grade-fixing two years ago led to the disappearance of files, computers, desks, cellphones, a half-eaten sandwich, secret whistles only linebackers could hear and adjunct professors who suddenly found themselves in Cabo San Lucas answering only to the name “Pablo,” Tommy Tuberville fired his offensive coordinator this week.

Auburn’s offense ranks 104th in the country, just behind Mississippi State and one spot ahead of the 1869 Rutgers team, who are all dead. So there is some explanation of the sky-is-falling panic.

Imagine if Tuberville coached in Knoxville. There wouldn’t be anybody left except for Phil Fulmer, who has 97 lives, largely because he eats all of his vegetables and maybe the table.

Fulmer hasn’t been fired yet. Tennessee is 2-3, but you can’t assume anything until after the Georgia game. The Vols won the past two years 51-33 and 35-14. Eighty-six points in two games? Methinks Fulmer needs to put Willie Martinez in his will.

No talk of jersey color in Athens this week, just limiting penalties to a few simple assaults. That’s a start.

The line is 12 1/2. Seems like a lot. For a bye week does wonders for the ego, and PumpkinHead is running out of good-luck charms. Dogs cover.

GameDaze

Lunch at Tech: Poor Jackets. They can’t crack the Top 25, and now they’re stuck playing Gardner-Webb because the scheduled opponent, Army, retreated. Maybe next time Tech should pre-schedule a tougher outfit. Like the Salvation Army. Or the Swiss Army. They can put up a good fight, and all they’ve got is a bottle opener and a plastic toothpick. Where was I? No official line. We’ll set it at 27 1/3 and call it a cover. G-W gets $300,000 for medical expenses.

LSU at Florida: Tim Tebow spent part of spring break last year in the Philippines, helping circumcise impoverished children. Is it just me, or is his coach, Urban Meyer, suddenly calling plays like a nervous Moyel? Gators have lost their bite — and they’re going down at home. Take the seven, but LSU pulls an upset.

Arkansas at Auburn: Know the biggest difference between Bobby Petrino now and every other year? He already wants another job; he’s just not getting offers anymore. (I’m sure there will come a day when Petrino jokes get old. On second thought, probably not.) Tigers by 19? Hey 19, we can dance together.

Oklahoma vs. Texas: A Longhorns upset and Alabama probably slides into the top ranking. My ears hurt just thinking about it. And so: Okie covers 6 1/2.

Pros and Ex-Cons
Bears at Falcons: The Falcons are 3-2, which means if they go 7-4 in the next 11 they’re in the playoffs, which means the next president should be able to balance the budget in his first 17 months, give or take a week, depending on how quickly Sarah Palin realizes a frozen mooseburger tailgate fundraiser on Dupont Circle probably isn’t going to cut into the deficit much, even if she is hotter than Arlen Specter. The Falcons are a nice story. But they’re not there yet. Michael Turner leads the league in rushing. Chicago leads the league in dismembered running backs. You can fantasize, but: Bears cover 2 1/2.

Cowboys at Cardinals: Adam “Pacman” Jones got into a fight with the security guard whom the Cowboys assigned to babysit him, and it just happened to be in the same hotel where Roger Goodell was staying. Think of: running over a policeman’s foot. Still: Boys cover 5.

Raiders of the Lost Mind: If everybody bought Al Davis shots on Bourbon Street this weekend and then ditched him in a transvestite strip club in the Quarter, do you think he’d make more sense the next day? Saints cover 7 1/2.

Packers at Seahawks: Before Seattle turns over the coaching reins to Jim Mora next season, they might want to notice that his secondary has only one interception in four games and the defense ranks 27th. Take the Cheese and two on the road.

You will bow
Last week: I was so pretty. (8-4 straight up; 7-4-1 against the line.)
Overall: Kinda treading water. (38-21 straight up; 28-29-2 against the line.)

Don’t kid yourself. The only reason that Tech is playing Gardner - Webb is because Agnes Scott was already booked.

That plus The Georgia Academy for the Blind does not field a team.

Techies claim Tech at 4-1 would be rated if they were in any other conference. If Tech were in any other conference they would be 1-4.

Just watched Clemson- boy are they dreadful. The ACC is awful this year, and both Bowdons need to find something else to do. Tech is decent, but has played no one, and may not play anyone until they lose in Athens.

When are you ever wrong..? Don’t answer that, don’t have the time. You may fall out on this one but regarding UT-UGA, I think you’re onto something. ‘Course I’ll be pulling for the Vols but my head speaks over my heart…The guess here is CPF will be given the year to make amends. Season’s end will tell the tale…Just to keep us honest and on track to agree to disagree, UT 17-UGA 16…

El Jeffe’ - Thanks for attempting to remind the ignorant masses that the G-W game being on the schedule was NOT in the plan nor was it the fault of Tech. Nevermind that no one bothers to listen. Tech is benefitting from a third straight week off and getting the troops well for a stretch run. To be honest, I’m not sure Army would be that much stiffer competition at this point.

Funny that the puppies like to point fingers at Tech playing Jacksonville State and G-W, but fail to remember that their pitiful schedule so far has been padded with the likes of UGA@Statesboro and Central Michigan Community College.

Anyone that watched the ESPN game last night realizes that the Bowden’s need to go, Tommy first and Babblin’ Bobby next. Actually Bobby has all but gone already. Jimbo Fisher is running the team in Tallahatchee. Bobby just stands on the sidelines and mumbles to a student assistant that’s been assigned to empty his drool cup every 10 minutes.

It’ll be interesting to see the coaching carousel at the end of this season. Phat Phil, Tommy Tooberville, and Bowden all appear to be on the hot seat. Maybe one of those “Pablos” down in Cabo will return to coach an SEC team. Habla Espanol??

GD,

This battle cry is getting old and only serves to show the ignorance of anyone raising it as an issue.

Why lend your program’s credibility to another program when you have nothing to gain by it and everything to lose?

Tech would be stupid to play them and UGA is too dumb to realize that what they are doing by playing them.

If Tech plays UGA@Statesboro, the UGA@Statesboro recruiters use that fact when they go out and try and recruit in-state talent. See….you can come here, be a star and still get to play against the big boys.

God help you guys if you ever have a one-in-a-million bad day and lose to them.

By playing them, you are hurting your own program and you are playing with dynamite and are too ignorant to realize it.

If GSU wants to play against D1A competition, let them do what others (e.g., MTSU, UAB) have done, have the cajone’s to step up and become a D1A program. Otherwise, sit down in the onion patch, play Wofford and UTC and Shut the “F” up!

Like a child on a playground, you equate bravado with prudence. Refusing to engage a lesser opponent has nothing to do with “being affraid.” (Your spelling shows your own lack of intelligence, pup.) It has everything to do with not wasting time and effort on pursuits that offer you NO benefit.

Play Central Michigan Community College and UGA@Statesboro all you wish. It only serves to drag down your own program.

Did you not watch your own ranking go down at the beginning of the year due to the hit on your strength of schedule from playing these chumps????

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I’m personally against EVER Tech playing ANY D-1AA opponent (and I don’t care that they call it something else now, they are still D-1AA and always will be).

Call Michigan and see how they feel about playing Appalachian State again.

I’m not a Tech fan at all, but they don’t deserve any backlash for playing Gardner-Webb this weekend. They had Army on the schedule, and Army backed out last year. Not much they can do about it, same thing happened to UGA a few years ago when Tulane backed out to get a bigger payout from another team. You don’t have much of an option at this point other than to take a D1-AA team.

I’d just like to see Tech play Ga. Southern fairly often, since its Johnson’s old school and he used to call for the big state schools to play GSU when he was there. Time to put your money where your mouth is Paul.

Ranking are what you do when Saturday is over and you have nothing better than watching the leaves change colors, until the next Saturday. Real rankings are the actual record in conference play; and that means nothing until the season is over; and the only ranking of merit is “who won the conference.” Of course, if you are a Georgia fan, to keep your hands out of your overall pockets (or inside your overalls), you spend way too much time fantasizing about “golly gee, what if we’uns wuz number 1 in the whole dadgum nation?” Then, you start thinking a ranking is important; and for frustration relief (for never being number 1), you go sling mud on the house of the boy down the street, while his family is all at work and he is at school. The boy has a real brain, and goes to Georgia Tech. He doesn’t dream about rankings, because he has calculus and physics exams to think about. But, if you want a ranking, I make up the Jeff Schultz ranking of 495 (out of 502). That is where he ranks (in my mind) among all the best sports writers in the old Confederacy, before the beat writer for the Garder-Webb Gazette, but after the sports-blog-meister for the Auburn Farmer’s Almanach.

To bad they haven’t played the likes of Central Michigan or Georgia Southern. If they did, there is no way they could stay healthy and compete in the mighty SEC. Good golly, throw in ASU and holly cow, they are where they belong,..in last place.

They don’t want to talk about that one. They will talk about Alabama, Florida, LSU, etc., but its like the last one never even happened. Let me put it in terms you can understand … but I advise you to read S L O W.

My momma always told me, “Son, college football rankings are like a box of chocolates. Sometimes you bite into one and you like it. Sometimes you bite into one and puke.” But momma always also said, “Boo Boo, you can always afford a box of chocolates if you go to an ACC school (before they let the trash from Florida and those hillbillies from Virginie in), or Vanderbilt. If you can go there you can then also sell a rewrapped box of half-eaten chocolates for profit, to them poor people that go to SEC schools.” Momma always said, “Good thing you were born smart and wealthy Boo Boo.”

Jeff,

The reason given for Tech not being ranked in the top 25 is that they have not defeated a top 25 team.

I don’t believe that Georgia has done that either.

The only top 25 team Georgia has played beat them like a drum.

As for Tennessee, the power rankings peg them at a “lofty 48”.

So, stop kicking Tech until we learn how good they really are. So far, they have defeated an overall tougher group of teams than Georgia.

You know the deal with the reasons for playing GW. You are beginning to sound like one of the guys running for President.

And, just to make my point, I am quite sure Tech will show up ready to take care of business in Athens in late November.

As a guy who knows how it feels to defeat the dawgs between the hedges, I am really looking forward to CPJ’s young group of Jackets learning how it feels.

What do uga and GT have in common? They are both 4-1.

What else do they have in common? Neither has beaten a ranked team.

So why is it that uga is ranked so high, yet the reason why GT is unranked as of yet is because “they haven’t beaten a ranked team”?

It always makes me laugh when the idiotic uga fans (most of them never went to college, much less at uga) start talking about filling seats. There are about 1/4 as many students at Tech than uga (showing that there are fewer smart people in this world than stupid). The uga degree loses value each mile you travel away from Athens so their only opportunities are in Georgia. Since the Tech degree is noted as a true sign of intelligence across the country, we can choose anywhere to work and live. That means there are fewer of us in the Atlanta area to go to the games. Meanwhile, all the Ga Perimeter, Gwinnett Comm Coll grads and GED holders flock to Athens to discuss football and how things are going on the late shift at Ingles stocking cans.

Andrew, Grant Field [etc.], Dean George Griffin, GaDawg, 1eyed Jack, houston dawg fan, Hershel, Huh? and all other trash talking dawgs who are knocking Tech and the ACC, I’ll repeat an earlier post:

The following graphic and comments were noted on Raycom TV during the GT-BC game: “MORE PLAYERS WERE DRAFTED FROM THE ACC, 115, OVER THE PAST 3 YEARS THAN FROM ANY OTHER CONFERENCE! THIS INCLUDES THE #1, 2, AND 3 PICKS: MATT RYAN, BC; CALVIN JOHNSON, GT; AND MARIO WILLIAMS, NC STATE!”

Again, lots and lots of big mouth talk out of the Techies about a wide range of subjects, but there is always one glaring ommission: That last weekend in November. Who wants to talk about that? Who wants to talk about how they spent their weekends after the past 7 Thanksgivings? I’m up for it.

I don’t know why Georgia is ranked so high. I do know that they probably wouldn’t be ranked so high if their in state rival could beat them everyone once in a while. That would probably help Tech fans. You whine and cry about Georgia being overrated like Tech has no control over the situation. You are pathetic. Does Georgia finish in the Top 10 five out of the past six years if the Joke By Coke beats it? Of course not. Does Georgia finish #2 in the country last year if your piece of crap team beats it? Of course not. Does Georgia enter the 2008 season with loads of hype and expectations if that piece of crap football team on North Avenue grows some cajones and finally beats it? Of course not. So you see, you have some control over this situation. Quit playing the victim sissies. Tech has its chance to deal with Georgia’s supposedly overrated stature every single year. So what are you whining and crying about?

Georgia has not played well offensively vs. a stout defense(SC and Ala.). Granted UT offense is nothing to call home about . Specialty teams is vastly improved defense leads the SEC, the question mark is if the UT offense can play mistake free. Vols error free = victory!!!! Georgia was supposed to kill UT in 2004,2006, and 2007, and actually did in 2005.

Boo Boo, you can always afford a box of chocolates if you go to an ACC school (before they let the trash from Florida and those hillbillies from Virginie in), or Vanderbilt. If you can go there you can then also sell a rewrapped box of half-eaten chocolates for profit, to them poor people that go to SEC schools

You forgot to include Clemson and NC State, which are also ranked below UGA academically. But don’t let the facts stand in the way of another of your retarded rants.

There are about 1/4 as many students at Tech than uga

2007 Enrollment:

UGA: 33831 Tech:18742

Let me guess, you copied off Reggie Ball in math class? Enjoy the 3rd shift at Geek Squad.

Whoo, I’m glad Tech hasn’t had to play any more of those rough, tough, SEC teams this year. Mississippi State just about wore out all our running backs’ legs, piling up 500 yards of total offense and 38 points. What did Auburn and LSU score on them, combined? 37, you say?

Of course, if that bunch from Knoxville pulls off an upset Saturday, that will be just more evidence of SEC superiority, no?

Wow, reading these comments makes me long for the good old days when I as a Tech grad and my brother as a UGA grad used to go to the game together and have a good time, teasing about the better school and football team. Now days, people are so rude. You ranters should have your mouths washed out with soap and sent to bed without supper- you should be ashamed of yourselves. Go Jackets, Go Dogs, go away rude posters.

KJ,

I feel sorry for your curse of stupidity. I’ll pray for you, that you don’t get killed crossing the street.

You go tossing around “ranked” statements again. I told you twice now … ranking means nothing. If that meant anything, you might be ranked above the retards you think you are better than; but you are not. You are just a lowly retard that projects your retardation onto others, for a personal sense of wellbeing, amid the reality that is your miserable life.

You are just a hater. Admit it. Do you also post here as VICK SUPPORTER?

In my experience, most of the trash talking dawgs never went to UGA and many never finished high school.

The comment about Tech having only 1/4 of UGA grads probably refers to the # who actually stay in the state, hence, a smaller stadium.

Another point: many of the Tech students including those from other countries and out of state come there purely for the academics and have little interest in football.

It’s amazing that the 11 team “weak” ACC has more players drafted by the NFL the past 3 years including the Top 3 than the “mighty” 12 Team SEC!

Jacket Steve….come on man, do you really believe the stupidity that you are spewing???? Why can’t all of us just stop with the my school is better than your school stuff?? And do you actually believe that all Tech fans went to Tech? I think not. Both of our schools are very good. You don’t need to go to a school to be a fan. It’s your personal preference. I went to school at Southern Poly with a very good friend of mine, and he is a huge Tech fan. Now say what you want about entrance requirements….blah…blah..blah…his family just couldn’t afford it. If you went to Tech or UGA, then hats off to you. Just be a fan of whatever school you want…………but dam….don’t dog people because they didn’t graduate from there. Georgia people are faithful to their teams. Once you get outside of metro Atlanta, the true colors come out. Most people are either Tech or UGA down south. I doubt you’ll see too many OSU or Mighigan flags in Valdosta…..but I could be wrong. Atlanta is a plethora of people from all over the country. It’s only like that for about a 40 mile radius.

Guys, just enjoy the football season and let’s not try to compare dik size…..we’ve still got a lot of football to play.

KJ,

Ah, so the opinions of coaches, sportswriters and other professional jounalists across the country mean nothing

It could mean you would go down on any Bulldog ranked in the top ten, just so you could save your spit in a bottle and tell all your friends at the retardation center; but like I said, it really means nothing. You see, its the games that count and the conference standings at the end of the season. But if you can get some spunk out of ranking, go for it!

Now, if you were talking a sport like baseball or basketball, where conference winners get seeded to play teams believed to be strong second-third place teams, in a double-elimination tournament, with a set number teams allowed in, then the rankings can come into play. It comes into play so people like you can cry when a ‘ranked’ team gets overlooked.

A top ten ranking and $5 will get you a gallon of gas in Atlanta, if you can find a station with gas, not gouging the price.

Hey UGA FANS:

Quit whining about our schedule! UGA has played NOBODY worth a crap. Ga. Southern, sux, Central Michigan, Sux, SC, Sux, ASU, Sux and BAMA who you lost to! Now you play a TN team that is 2-3 and sux. Your schedule is no tougher than ours, but yet your ranked at 10th, which is a joke. You will be lucky to win 8 games this year, as LSU, FL, AUB and GT will all slap you around just like BAMA did. Quit whining and get ready to start losing and dropping in the polls like you should. Why don’t you have another Blackout? That worked well! GO JACKETS!!!
